firstly: thank u!! ;_;<3 i feel as if my current stuff up on ao3 doesn't 1000% reflect how i Would write him now or maybe i just hate my old writing who knows 😭 but regardless it's for the most part up to par w/ how i feel abt heem....

so what i think his deal is is that he's an unintentionally sorta selfish kid riddled with severe self-loathing and mental illness and a desire to be wanted for Something despite the fact that He doesn't believe there is Something there for him to be Wanted for. and the selfish part mainly being in how he is so In His Own Head and kinda chooses to accept that he's a failure and that no one likes him and he has nothing no one alone when that isn't / doesn't have to be the case. like.... thinking he's the main character but in the inverse/wrong way if that makes sense some sort of inferiority complex 😔 i also believe he intrinsically can be kind but i don't think he's Nice, just overtly polite and therefore sorta Appearing as nice

when i was a teenager and just starting to write fic for the first time i would write evan kinda like... purposely a bit meaner than one might fkjgsndf at the time out of spite because it annoyed me so much seeing a lot of people in the majority of fanon spaces depict him as an uwu smol anxiety boy... however, looking back on it i Do think i was onto something for Different reasons 😭 mostly being that 1. i tend to lean a bit towards the arena stage characterization of him, which was objectively a bit more harsh and a bit more rude and 2. in most of the contexts i had written him in, it was w jared specifically in which case i do think he would more or less abandon most of his Need to Be Nice / Polite / Unoffensive because depending on the context 1. he's accepted the fact that 'jared doesn't like him' and therefore doesn't try as hard to give off a good image or pretend to be something he isn't because he doesn't really see a point and thinks jared is just Always gonna be a dick to him / think of him as a 'family friend' (which i'd like to believe he knows is bullshit regardless) or 2. he Does recognize jared as a friend and for the same reasons feels comfortable enough to not put up a front. maybe a mixture of both ! again it sorta depends on the context

his adamance (i'm not sure if that's a word) to the idea that he's such a loser who can't get better no matter what i think makes it much harder for both himself and others to like Be Close to him but yet he wants it so bad and simply doesn't realize he is inadvertently part of the problem. there isnt specifically any One Way he wants to be, he just doesnt want to Be Him... because to him it's clearly wrong and not right and why nobody sees him and why he feels alone etc etc etc

but all that to say -- that's how i personally try to write him when i do jsdkfnsdf obviously that's not The Right Way[tm] or how i expect everyone to see his characterization (and it probably doesn't encompass like even all of My thoughts either i'm just rambling a bit as i procrastinate further on a paper) but! hopefully that answers ur question

I'm going to rant about how misunderstood Dear Evan Hansen is because I swear to God no one understands complex characters. Before you guys ask, I do have diagnosed GAD and I don't exhibit symptoms the same way Evan does, but I know people who do.

The second, the SECOND there's a character with anxiety that you can't turn into your UwU child who can do no wrong, you immediately make him out as a disgrace. The show by no means excuses Evan's actions. Just because he wasn't physically punished doesn't mean that he's let off scot free. Did you forget that he lost the closest thing he's ever had to friends? Did you miss the part where he tried to say that he wasn't Connor's friend but then got tangled in a web of lies?

I'm not excusing his actions, he's not a perfect person, what he did was awful, but he's a three dimensional character. Calling Evan a sociopath is not only inaccurate, but it's also completely not okay. I'm sorry people with anxiety aren't perfect. Yes, saying that Evan was the hero is absolutely missing the point, but so is saying Evan was the villain.

Not only that but you'll then go and romanticize Jared and Connor and Alana (Two of whom also canonly have mental illness, and Jared implied to have something) and it really shows that there's never an in between. We either could do no wrong or are the worst people on Earth. I like Jared and Connor and Alana but they aren't perfect and neither is Evan, and they have good qualities as well.

Y'all love asking for morally grey characters but the second you actually get some, you criticize it.

As you can probably guess, Dear Evan Hansen means so much to me and it means so much to other people who dealt with mental illness. There's a reason why Waving Through A Window is such a popular song; because it's incredibly relatable. The score is good! It's just not in a musical theatre style, but it's still good! You Will Be Found is a good song! Even to break in a glove is way too overhated. Good For You and Requiem are some of my favorite songs just in a musical in general.

My intention here isn't to say that you have to like Dear Evan Hansen (It isn't without its flaws) but my intention is to say that it's entirely misunderstood. As someone with anxiety, thank you Dear Evan Hansen.

(Side Note: The movie wasn't as good as the musical but the movie wasn't that bad and I think that people overhate that movie as well.)

thinking about deh again… like i think one of the things that makes deh age weirdly is that the latter portion of it is incredibly uncomfortable to sit through. and it doesn’t quite give you the full catharsis you expect (i.e full closure with all characters). so it gives you an exceptionally like. emotionally tense feeling. it’s so heavy. when i finished watching it the first time it took me like all night to process it and finally relax and sleep. i liked the discomfort a lot though, it’s rare that a story makes you sit through it and sit with it and doesn’t feed you the perfect happy ending.

the entire Moment of evan revealing everything to the murphys is like. not quite second hand embarrassment, it’s like. second hand “totally fucked” (spring awakening style) and second hand “i want to kms” (how can you not empathize with/have compassion for evan during words fail) and second hand pure desperation of wanting to be anyone else but yourself but also wishing you could want to be yourself.

but in the end the murphys DON’T totally fuck evan à la melchior gabor…like….because they got attached to him and still feel that attachment, because he helped them get closure, because they realize he was very troubled and the truth coming out could make him go out the same way as connor and they wouldn’t be able to stand the guilt and knowing they could have prevented it…again…that is SO compelling. it’s not even about redemption or forgiveness. his lies helped them, and if you’re really extraordinarily cynical, the lie (platitude) that you will be found (the original lie that evan was found by connor), that there’s always going to be someone who’ll come running also helps people…and it’s not really a lie if the musical itself found people, right….the layers of #ywbf in universe and out of it are insane and I honestly think a lot of them are unintentional considering. but i would argue those layers were originally intentional (since the original idea pasek/paul/levenson came up with was a cynical satire on parasocial grief) but layers later pushed away in favor of fully celebrating joyfully and optimistically their song and story and theme and audience at the time, removing the nuance, leading to the direction of the movie.

could deh the musical have said what it wanted to say with more sensitivity and grace? sure. but what it *does* say is worth accepting its messy conclusions for, because expecting things to be neat and tidy and perfectly moral is just another lie we force ourselves to present to the world that prevents us from ever finding each other.

Every now and then he would ask, “Uh… do you want cold water?” “How about a cold juice?”, “ice cream is good, I brought your favorite flavor.” He’ll make sure to follow the instructions given by the dentist, to ease your pain.

Even in pain and swollen face, he thinks you're absolutely adorable.

You want his cool metal palm on you? It is all yours.

Oh, you are hungry? Even though he can’t cook, he will try his best, to make a soup for you. Bucky will go to the kitchen, a bit panicked and not sure what to do. He had never taken care of someone before, so this was all new to him. But you are not just someone, you are his doll.

He’ll do anything for you.

Nick Fowler-

Let’s say before the procedure even begin, Nick had warned the dentist, to go easy on you, to make it as painless as possible.

The dentist had told you; you did feel “little” pain. Nick was okay with that; you can deal with “little” pain. So why the hell are there tears in your eyes, because of the pain? Yup the dentist can kiss goodbye to their life job for lying.

Nick will not let you leave the bed. You will just relax and chill in the air-conditioned room. Everything will be at your service. From cold water to cold juices and ice creams.

There’s a min freezer in the room, full of cold- compression just for you.

You have a project to complete? Nope, not happening. You are just going to rest. The project can wait. Or the person who want’s the project done, can wait or say good bye to life it.

Lee Bodecker-

Lee just can’t stand, to see you in pain. He may not be good in taking care, but that does not mean, he won’t try.

He won’t eat sweets. If you can’t have them, he won’t have them either. You can only have soup? He’ll have soup too.

Before going out to work, he will remind you, to rest and take the pain killers, if absolute necessary.

But let’s face it. Looking after the town and the upcoming elections, he is tired. He has needs. The stress is making him crave something sweet.

So, he’ll come up with the best solution. He’ll go down on you. It’s a win-win situation for you two. He gets his dose of sweet, from eating you and you get the best distraction from the pain.

Chris Evans.

Steve Rogers-

Steve will instantly become the mother hen. Concern face on. Every fifteen minutes, he’ll ask “Hey, how are you feeling?”

He will gently examine your face, his fingers probing the swollen areas with a tender touch. “You're going to be okay, I'm here for you.” he says reassuringly.

He proceeds to pamper you with ice cream, painkillers, and a constant supply of cold compresses, even singing a soft rendition of ‘Star-Spangled Man with a Plan’ to distract you, from the discomfort. Even though he hates it. But for you, he’ll do anything. (Even take a break from avenging.)

Lloyd Hansen-

Let’s just say the dentist was bit hesitant, to treat you. Lloyd was sitting in the room, with pilers, just to make sure, you are having a painless treatment.

Back at the fortress of solitude, he has given everyone a strict order, to be quiet. No noise. Noise is ban. His sugar had a painful treatment and he’ll make sure you get to rest, without any disturbance.

He will lie down on the bed, next to you, letting you rest your head on his firm chest. Making you feel comfortable and safe. He gently caresses your hair, proud of himself, to see you are sleeping peacefully.

But someone makes a noise, waking you up. You whimper, because of the pain. He quickly gives you painkillers, kissing your forehead. He will find out who made the noise.

Lloyd removes that person’s tooth and makes the person wear headphones. Heavy metal playing in them. Let’s see how that person likes, getting disturb.

Lloyd, has filled the bedroom with magazines and books you like. Netflix ready to play. He has called in the best chefs, to make different types of delicious soups and ice-cream for you.

He will even let you play with his moustache.

Andy Barber-

As a district attorney, Andy is used to dealing with tough cases, but seeing you in pain, brings out his protective instincts. He proceeds to pamper you with ice cream, painkillers, cold compresses, music and even offering to make you a warm bath to relax.

As you two spend the day together, Andy tells you, stories of his courtroom victories and the latest town gossip, making you laugh despite your discomfort. He's determined to take your mind off the pain and make you feel loved and cared for.

Andy will keep on whispering, “You're doing great, love. Just remember, no strenuous activities for a while, okay?”

In the process of distracting you, he’ll end up distracting himself and you won’t even realize, when he started to do…..ahem

he lies to a grieving family about having been their dead son’s best friend. he does a bunch of patently awful things to either keep up this lie or benefit from it. he is portrayed as the good guy oh poor little guy he just has anxiety THE ENTIRE TIME

Lies about having been friends with a suicide victim so he can get in the pants of said victim's sister. The narrative excuses it and gives Evan no consequences for his actions because he's uwu anxious sadboi. What more is there to say? Other than the fact Ben Platt looked far too old to play a teenage boy so the film version is downright disturbing.
