But..like... Kristen Applebees would be a terrible student body president? Just, at the base level of what the job entails, responsibility is literally what student government is about???And unless the function of student government is completely different at Aguefort, it's just a lot of organizing and planning and fundraising - you know, the boring stuff she's never once shown interest in. The shit she didn't want to do for cleric class.
I just want one (1) person to ask her if she knows what the actual job is and if she actually has any plans to do it.

Does Hed help Les with grooming his back?
This is a really old ask about this post. And the answer is yes, definitely!
Tumblr media
I ended up drawing them back in their room in Vibe City because I've been thinking a lot about them growing up there lately. This is a little before Les gets kicked out (big fight with dad) and they end up traveling around with Flea who is at uni at this point. (Flea isn't a local, he moved there because of uni a couple of years prior, and that's when Les and Hed met him. He is the only other mixed/non-fully funk troll they know at that point.)
In the drawing Hed is studying for a test. He's in the second year of high school when he drops out. This upsets and angers Les because he has good grades but Hed insists that they should form a band (like they used to talk about when younger) because he is secretly shit scared of letting Les live alone and fuck off to who knows where. - At this point in time Vibe City is pretty much grounded in the same location most of the time, and if Les doesn't have work, he likes to spend his time in the suburb/woods outside the city where he takes care of his beetle van, Scaab. And Hed is aware Les has been itching to leave the city for a while already...
This has been an unexpected mini lore dump, thank you for your time :P

even though I've never read the books, i love how you handle the women in this series.
The utter lack of interest in the internal lives of women characters in WC kills me. If you don't read the series it's hard to put it into words, but it really does not value women on the same level as their male counterparts
I think the best example I can use is Turtle Tail. All of her choices, from going to live with Bumble, choosing a "cruel man" as a mate, and even her grief when Bumble dies, all only happen as accessories to Gray Wing's arc.
Living with Bumble was because Gray Wing was obsessing over a woman who didn't love him, neglecting Turtle who does
Choosing Tom the Wifebeater was also because Gray Wing didn't appreciate her enough
She accepts that her friend's murder was just an unfortunate accident and her emotions carried her away in the moment, because Gray Wing needs to be right that his brother is a good boy
In this way, Turtle Tail's emotions and motivations aren't allowed to really be about her. They're about how her romantic interest influences her. And then she's crushed by a car for his man pain after they've explored every other way her life could make him sad.
This does not happen with men. Even characters like Stemleaf and Larksong, whose primary narrative purpose is dying for their wife's pain, have functions outside of that. Stemleaf gives his life opposing the tyranny of the impostor in a rebellion, and Larksong has input on The Kin, SkyClan, and even serves as a source of comfort and support to a son who he's never met in contrast to the unreasonable mother.
There's just so much more respect and reverence to the toms in this series. You have to be in the POV of a molly to get depth, and even then, they nearly always (exceptions being mothwing and mistystar) include a major conflict over romance and/or parenthood
(And they usually get punished for their choices a lot harder than male counterparts. Directly contrast Crookedstar and Sparkpelt, who both distance themselves from their children out of grief, but only one has to deal with the lasting consequences of being a "bad parent")
Anyway, enough wistful analysis. It is MY kitchen and I get to choose the conflicts. It is my personal mission to write lots and lots of women persuing a higher education in STEM. Sadism, Torture, Evisceration, and Murder <3

obviously the conventional cultural capital that facilitates fluency in literary discourse being that of the affluent classes is not news to anyone with half a brain, but i'm reading a teacher's reflection on having taught lolita, and at one point he talks about having taught it in a private school where the students were apparently very quick to get to grips with the novel's literary flair and thus "understand" what nabokov was trying to do at a stylistic level. he compares this to teaching it to more disadvantaged students, who came at the novel with a more 'realist' approach in part because they hadn't been imbued with the same kind of reverence for canonical literature and valorisation of the sorts of skills and methodologies that make that particular form of engagement possible. which i think is a good reminder that for all the shit-slinging about lolita and what discourse camp it putatively belongs to and who can and cannot understand it and why, the basic tools of conventional interpretive practice that open up writing like nabokov's are far more readily accessible to the privileged classes, and pontificating about "reading comprehension" does nothing if you aren't willing to participate in the kind of class warfare that can liberate pedagogy from capitalism.

love the idea that sherlock and liam get so caught up in each other's worlds when theyre bantering (flirting) sometimes they forget that they are also around equally educated people. sherlock quotes othello and moran mumbles for them to suffocate him while theyre at it. liam turns a forensic observation into a flirt and john quips how that is not scientifically possible. silly things :"))

conservative propaganda (and moderates’ propaganda) will argue that white progressives live in a privileged echo chamber and that’s why they support things like defunding the police and abortion on demand and immigration and other progressive policy. but the most liberal demographics in america have more education, less religion, and live in large and diverse communities. they’re largely white and middle class, so they have the privilege of movement and access to information. they grew up in communities where they had access to all kinds of information (both public libraries and the internet, primarily) and went to well-funded public schools.
in contrast, the most conservative demographics in america have less education, more religion, and live in remote and small, largely homogenous communities. despite the growth of the internet, rural communities still lag behind in access. one study found at least 18% of rural students do not have broadband or cellular data access. libraries in rural communities often struggle to stay open, and distance can affect the ability of community members to visit regularly. rural schools have been decimated by the school choice movement, which pull funding from public education. the result is that many working class white people, in particular, live in an information vacuum, and as a result, have been vulnerable to a right-wing echo chamber that has specifically increased racial resentment among this demographic.
privileged white demographics are farther to the left than democratic voters of color, too - the percentage of black voters that identify as liberal only increased to 27% from 19% in 1984, over that same time, it increased from 30% to 69% for white voters and from 18% to 41% for hispanics. like white working class voters, black people specifically are generally less educated and more religious and have less access to information. hispanics are among the least educated, but also less religious, but also have less access to information. while most black and hispanic people live in urban and suburban communities, a notable percentage still live in rural communities (7.8% and 8.6% respectively). it is also important to note that many low-income and immigrant asian american and pacific islander communities and many rural native american communities lack sufficient access to information as well.
higher education, public libraries, and public education are all currently under attack for a reason. the old adage that knowledge is power IS true. educational and information access has democratized over the past 70 years. conservatives want to take us back because they can see the writing on the wall. they want to deny the liberating (and liberalizing) power of information and education to the masses. it’s also why you see men increasingly argue online that a college degree is worthless. without education and access to information, the gap is filled by propagandists, charlatans, and religious traditionalism. we must fight back. period

Since the Hbomberguy video has dragged everyone back into talking about academia, I have a rant:
The take, "Academic papers and academia in general tend toward a writing style that is intentionally inaccessible to maintain standards of ableism and academic elitism" (woke) is not the same statement as, "Because I do not understand this thing about this topic I have never researched at this level before, the work is inaccessible and therefore in Bad Faith™️" (not only broke but fucking wild).
Working as an academic advisor in my senior year, my specialty was helping people with writing. That included reviewing essays and helping with research mostly, as both of my degrees are research and writing intensive. Even with the MANDATORY Introduction to College Writing class freshman were forced into - unless, of course, you either tested well in AP English Language or passed the writing assessment that allowed you to skip the course (which most people didn't) - I often found myself explaining that academic papers are written with the understanding that the reader already possesses some meaningful amount of context. Students would come to me with full confidence just to show a paper reliant on paraphrasing and regurgitating the source text, ended with whatever hand-wavey, unresearched thoughts they had while reading and call it /Analysis/. Thus would begin the long, arduous process of teaching them how to actually research and structure an academic essay from scratch, down to identifying reputable sources and deciding how many is too many quotes.
As such, while it saddens me to see people put off of academic writing (and research as a whole) for the reason of inaccessibility, I get it. Disregarding the prevalence of paywalls blocking credible published works from the public, I'd argue that most papers assigned to studentsr weren't actually written for students. The 25 page article in the well established medical journal is going to be laden with esoterica and intracultural references; it was written for peer review by other professionals in their field with a baseline of pre-requisite knowledge. Similarly, if you're doing independent research and just roll into a random a decades old article you found on Google Scholar, it's likely to be confusing if you have no backgound in the topic. The expectation that anyone can just dive into a research paper written by an expert and immediately grasp the information provided completely misses the fact that learning is an active practice requiring critical thinking and access to reliable resources.
Why does that matter? Because the core facet of research is taking that confusing, inaccessible academic journal or data and /making it make sense/. Taking the time to learn terms you don't recognize, to read ALL OF the provided context, to reword and recontextualize the information to be digestible to an audience without expertise on the topic, that's THE POINT. When an assigment asks for ten sources, it's not for the sake of making you work harder. The entire exercise is to have you compare and contrast things like word choice, historical context, and author bias so you can synthesize your own understanding of the topic. Entire categories of the research and essay writing community exist simply for this goal: to make complex academic literature accessible to general audiences. It's what Internet Historian and Illuminaughti (fuck if I spelled that right) were pretending to do!
There are a lot of valid points to be made in the discussion of academia being inherently inaccessible. Unfortunately the Internet, specifically social media, has a way of boiling actual conversations down to the bare bones of "Is hard and I don't like it, therefore is bad."
(Note: This does not apply to professors/educators assigning a bunch of text without doing any actual teaching. Expecting everyone to be able to read something and just get it isn't a "challenge in critical thinking", it's bad teaching and makes things harder for people who may already find a learning challenging or inaccessible. Do better. )
Is academia filled with conventions that make it widely inaccessible to people from all education levels? Yes.
Do some people write with as many big words or as much autofellating fluff as possible purely for the purpose of sounding smart? YES.
But, as an academic writer and reader myself, and as a person with a bevvy of peers I respect deeply in the field of research, a significant amount of these articles are written in good faith by people who are using the vocabulary they have. The use of "big" words, esoteric references, and hyper-specific language isn't based in the desire for exclusion, but rather clarity for a peer group who are comfortable with the language being used is it's intended context.
Sorry about all this. I just actually enjoy academia when it's about the love of learning rather than being a pissing contest/bitchfest. Ignore me 😭

GSKSVKSGKG MARLIN NOT UR RECENT TAGS IMPLYING AMERICA DOESNT HAVE COLLEGE
Agdjsh okay you didn't ask for a primer on England/the UK, but here's one anyway:
So because England is Old™ and we didn't use to educate anyone who wasn't a rich white boy (and it's totally better now, don't even look at Eton, pretend it doesn't exist), the education system here is a fucking mess has several different names, so for various reasons:
College= 16-18 year olds, some colleges teach adults pre-university or high-schools level classes
Sixth Form= same as above, but generally part of a high school
Secondary School= haha I lied to you, we don't call it high school here because we suck.*
*Some secondary schools only teach people aged 11-16, so you have to move school (or go to college) to finish your education [or you can do an apprenticeship, if you can find one [which you won't]].
Public School= Private School**
Private School= you pay money to go here
**Wait, what?!= because England Sucks™, there was a time when A King (idk which one) provided a fund of money for non-rich white boys to go to school (how progressive), so these were called Public Schools because they were open to the public. Over time, these Very Old schools became Very Prestigious, and started asking for money. Hence, "Public School" in England is entirely synonymous with Private School (which gets confusing when talking to Americans because America, being Terrible ™ but also a Baby Country ™ has ironically had less time to be corrupted by capitalism. But it'll come. It'll come.)
State School= This is the free one.***
***Unless, of course, you have a school uniform, which nearly every British school does. 🙃
College is free until the age of 18, so colleges often advertise to adult students to try and get some Sweet Sweet Money. And that, of course, brings us to:
University= "COLLEGE”, but if anyone here calls it that, don't trust them, they're lying to you.
A place where 18+ aged people do courses and stuff, for extortionate rates. British people don't call University "College" (we call it 'Uni' in an offen-nasally voice, it's impossible to say it without the nasally voice, you've just gotta do it); but (some?) Universities do contain "colleges", and some posh ones call their colleges "houses" or "halls".
Bonus facts:
Scottish students can start university aged 17
It used to confuse me when Americans say they're going to "school" and they mean "college", so we're even now.
Preschool is called Nursery here
Kindergarten is also called Nursery here, but also "Playgroup". Idk man. It's fun branding to make it sound fun because we (can) start school AGED THREE.
I have a scar on my face, guess why!
Elementary school is called Primary school (and Elementary Colours are called Primary Colours. This is probably the only thing which remains consistent, so enjoy it)
I hope this was as confusing for you read as it was for me to live through <3

I FINALLY QUALIFY FOR PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
My initial student loan was $54,935.92.
I paid over $30,887.83*
My loan is currently at $51,756.93.
I thought I had made all 120 qualifying payments last year. I had to submit and resubmit the PSLF application multiple times, because it kept getting sent back because of problems with how my employers signed the form. It turned out some of the payments didn't qualify, so I had to stick with helljob for at least another year.
I definitely had made 120 qualifying payments this year, so I sent the application in December 2023.
Just got notified now that I have made all qualifying payments. I've made three extra payments, even.
"After we receive the approval, it may take up to 90 business days to process this information."
Three more months of helljob, because I still don't trust this is going to go through and I don't want to quit until I know my loans are gone. I do not have anything lined up after helljob, and I'm terrified of losing my helljob health insurance because I got medical complications. But I hate helljob. I hate helljob so much and my first emotion waking every workday is despair.
At least the loan payments have been paused until the reimbursement is processed. Theoretically I should get reimbursed for the extra payments, too.
* This was only my qualifying payments. The total amount I paid was higher. The website isn't showing me the non-qualifying payments and I have to submit a formal request to get my full payment history. I submitted the request, but it will take a few days to be sent to me.

Still considering becoming a lawyer someday. Any of y'all been to law school? What is it like? Are there scholarships (and what is required to get said scholarships?)?
How about practicing law? Do any of you have time for other career and hobby work? How long does it take to get to where you want to be after graduating law school?
If anyone in the field of law in the U.S. can tell me what to expect from law school and/or actually being a practicing lawyer please talk to me about it!
I think I'd be good at it if I put in the work but I want to know if that path is worth it for me and the lifestyle I want. Thank you

Here to tell you, you should drop out of college and try and publish some books.. lol okay okay, maybe don’t do anything super drastic just yet, BUT, I would definitely look into publishing books. Because I think it would work out for you. I could say something dumb like “just don’t be scared and do it”. Lol but that would be annoying. So how bout…. Don’t take it off the table. Don’t write it off as a pipe dream. You’re talented, you’re smart. And I think you can definitely pull it off. Might take a sometime but it’s worth a shot.
Tumblr media
i appreciate this so much. i’m definitely trying to not do anything drastic but it’s just been a lot of questioning “what do i want to do in life that DOESNT make me want to stop existing” and the realization that everything that does make me feel happy and passionate just… doesn’t align with my major. like, i have spent years sitting in classrooms telling myself ‘this is good for you it’ll be a stable career, it’ll make others proud’.
i shouldn’t have to talk myself down from a ledge every day i wake up or head into class. and i certainly shouldn’t only go into a career because of how it makes other people feel.
so yeah. lots of feels. thank you, nonnie. 🖤
