I'd like to take a moment to say hi to the fandom ghosts.
You guys out there who read fics, look at the pretty arts, watch the fanvids. Don't comment, don't like, don't kudos. Just enjoy.
I for one am glad you're here. I'm glad that you chose to spend your spare time reading the stories I've put out there. It's okay that you don't kudos, or leave a comment. I put my fics out there for anyone who cares to read, and that includes you guys.
I hope you continue to find things that spark joy. Even if we never know about it.

wait a second: communion is meant to have personal meaning? I'm Lutheran and it might just be because growing up my second pastor only gave 1 to 1.5 hour sermons (the second service usually ran late since the first was usually 2 to 2.5 hours) but communion always felt like just words. my first pastor (who was actually the first pastor at the church itself and his longest sermons were 30 minutes) was the main influence on my faith now but it didn't really feel like there was an emphasis on communion.
this pastor unfortunately had a heart attack around the middle of service just before his sermon one day. I think it would have made sense if my church later placed less of an emphasis on communion because of how much we all loved pastor and so many of us saw him collapse but that didn't happen.
the blood we had then was apparently awful (my mother was raised Catholic and once poured her church's supply down the drain since it tasted so bad and remarked that she wished she had done it once or twice to my church's as well) and conceptually I understand the meaning behind communion but it's not normal to think of it as just a part of service like closing all the doors to block out the road or grabbing the book of hymns from the pews?
it is indeed meant to have personal meaning! there's the verses in 1 Corinthians 11, verses 23-32:
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord.  Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For any one who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself. That is why many of you are weak and ill, and some have died. But if we judged ourselves truly, we should not be judged. But when we are judged by the Lord, we are chastened so that we may not be condemned along with the world.
at least, that's how I'd interpret that - 'let a man examine himself' &c. we're meant to try and 'judge ourselves truly' and that.
I'm so sorry to hear about your pastor also.
it's not normal to think of it as just a part of service like closing all the doors to block out the road or grabbing the book of hymns from the pews?
no, I don't believe that's how it's intended. I feel like there are other verses I could pull up to discuss this matter further but I can't remember rn. feel free to ask further questions on anon or not, and anyone feel free to chip in and add smth!

Blessed Imelda Lambertini 1322 - 1333 Feast Day: May 13 Patronage: First Communicants
Blessed Imelda Lambertini had a burning desire to receive the Holy Eucharist from a very young age. She joined a Dominican convent at age 9 and would sometimes say “Tell me, can anyone receive Jesus into their heart and not die?” One day after Mass she was seen with the Sacred Host miraculously hovering above her. The priest was called and gave her First Holy Communion. She died in ecstasy immediately after and is believed to be incorrupt. She was only 11.

For the purposes of fiction I'd like your input on XenoCatholicism.
So say intelligent aliens come to earth and want to convert. Did the crucifixation of Jesus apply to all intelligent life or just humanity?
On the level of practice, how would we baptise a being that dissolves in water? I imagine holy water could be an issue as well.
For beings that could not ingest the body of christ, is the ritual of being around communion enough or would there have to be a different material to transubstantiate upon?
Thank you.
The major consensus is that only human beings may participate in the sacraments of the Church, but sentient life may convert to Catholicism.
The assumption is that if the alien life form has a soul and is in need of salvation, they would have their own Savior. That being would have their own version of the Eucharist.
Pope Francis has stated if aliens came down he would offer them communion. I do want to point out many people are in disagreement. Before the forum was shut down, Catholic Answers was constantly bombarded by fights when the topic inevitably came up.
In the event that aliens did come down to earth and received communion by the Pope, it would not be a problem for them to receive an alternative Host to consume. For example, people who have a gluten sensitivity are given gluten free hosts at Mass if requested in advance. There is also the option of spiritual communion. This was very common during the worst of the Covid lockdowns.
When we get to the baptism I can see how issues may arise. If this alien being was so hydrophobic to the point of death, I could see more arguments arising that aliens shouldn’t participate in these sacraments and should have their own specific to their biology and culture. Water is so connected to life for human beings.
Until aliens announce themselves on earth and make intentions to convert, I will try not to worry too much about it.

Just went to my first Lutheran service, and it was just so beautiful. I wish Protestants kept more of the ceremonial aspect from the Catholics in our own services. Just in that one service, I realized how much stronger the sense of the being in the presence of God was than in the services I'm used to.

All Theology
Luke: [age 18] "One of my classes got into a discussion about the sacraments." Beth: [age 15] "The sacraments?" Luke: "Yeah, like communion, or baptism." Mom: "Or marriage." Luke: "Oh, I guess that's a big one." Mom: [to Beth] "A sacrament is a specific action or event that the church says has special spiritual value. Like taking communion to symbolize the sacrifice of Jesus. But different churches have different sacraments or think about them in different ways. The Catholics have a lot more sacraments than others." Beth: "OK. I know what those things are, I just didn't remember the word 'sacraments'." Me: "I still don't understand how Catholics think communion bread turns into the flesh of Jesus when you swallow it." Beth: "That's called something... trans something...." Me: "Transubstantiation." Beth: "I remember hearing about transubstantiation around the same time I first heard about genetic engineering. Somehow I got the picture in my head that God just manufactured more of Jesus." Luke: "That's one thing we talked about: If you added up all the flesh of Jesus that all the Catholics have eaten, how many bodies of Jesus is that?" Me: "Seems like a lot. According to Beth's theory, there are vats of genetically-grown Jesus somewhere. A big Jesus factory." Mom: "Years ago I had a conversation with a Catholic friend who believed in transubstantiation. They said it was different from my belief that the bread just symbolic, that it actually turns into the body of Jesus." Me: "Exactly at what point in the esophagus does it transform?" Mom: "Well, right. I asked when it changed, and they said it didn't. I said, so it's still bread when you digest it? No, they said, it's the body of Jesus. But it's still bread? Well, yes, physically it resembles bread but spiritually it's the body of Jesus. So how is that different from me believing it's symbolic? It just is, they said." Me: "So it's not literally flesh at any point?" Luke: "If it were, could vegetarian Catholics take communion?" Me: "It just feels like playing with words." Luke: "All theology feels like playing with words."
