Carlos Sainz x reader
Word count: 2.5k
Warnings: Smut, feeling guilty about sexual thoughts, age gap, I think that's it?
Notes: Heyyy, Carlos??? Hope I read this request right! Probably changed it a bit. This is more from Carlos perspective than anything else
Request Don't know if you are taking any requests or not, but how's best friend brother's with Carlos Sainz when suddenly having ons with the reader and Carlos been wondering how having her in his bed
Pt 2 here
Tumblr media
Carlos breathed in the familiar hot air as he stepped out of his car and onto the gravel of his family home. He had finally touched down on home ground and planned to spend the majority of his summer break here.
He smiled to himself as he watched the big house and the green grass. He loved this house, he loved their summers and he was excited to spend some down time with his family.
Ana and y/n should be there already, Blanca maybe but she could also arrive later. His parents weren't home, he knew that already but they would come in an hour or so.
Someone was home at least judging by the open porch door and small talk coming from the other side of the deck.
Carlos walked over the grass, trying to see who was there but he opted to take in his bags first. He had just stepped into the big hallway when he saw a figure from the big window. Ana was there and.. who was that? All he could see was a beautiful woman, hair moving in the wind and a beautiful figure on the deck. Carlos swallowed before moving away, it was rude to stare.
Who was that? Was that.. no it couldn't be Y/n, could it? But who else would be here to stay for the summer. It was always Y/n.
Carlos' mind ran on high speed as he tried to process who else it could be because this was certainly not the Y/n he remembered. No, last summer you had been this, very cute sure, but nerdy little girl who had barely graduated school and was now working at the downtown café whilst studying in university.
You had always been sweet and cute but he had never ever seen you as attractive. No this, this was surely someone else. Maybe one of Blankas work-friends. It could not be you.
Carlos forced the thoughts away as he marveled into the house, his house. It was hot, summer and he was settling for some downtime before the next part of the season began, that was the focus he reminded himself of.
He opted to start on food, eyes flickering back to the garden to try and get a look at whoever it was out there but they had disappeared from the kitchen view. Maybe that was for the better actually.
"Carlos!"Carlos flinched at the sound of his name, too deep in thoughts to realize someone had entered the open kitchen from the patio-doors in the living room.
He turned around with a wide smile as he recognized your voice opening his arms to hug you which you welcomed with a giggle.
His face fell however when he looked at you after you had stepped away. What the fuck had happened over winter?
The before young, teenage-looking girl had really grown into a young looking sure, but gorgeous woman. Face more mature-looking, smile as captivating as always and your body. Carlos had to force himself to look at your face as you were dressed down in only a small skirt and a bikini-top from having been sunbathing and swimming all morning.
Fuck it was you, how?
He quickly averted his eyes from your body to look at your face
"Hola Y/n" he smiled warmly as you hugged him in greeting. "We thought you came but we didn't see you" you smiled as you watched the counter top that was filled with ingredients. "Sorry, I planned on going out but..."
That Ana came out was perfect timing because Carlos had no idea how to finish that sentence. "Carlos! Why didn't you come out to greet us?!" she scolded as she wrapped her brother into a warm hug, Carlos stuttered, what he wanted to say, or the reason for it was not something he wanted to say at all so instead he shrugged. "I was about too" he said instead , ignoring the look Ana gave him and the food on the counter.
Ana dropped it quickly, the excitement of seeing her brother taking over the weird behavior and she soon proceeded to ask him a million questions but it was all like usual with the Sainz siblings.
You were happy, content in stretching out on the sofa and listening to their chat during the evening and when the night came you gladly welcomed the soft bed in the Sainz's guest room.
-
Carlos wanted to hit the person of his family that had suggested a boat day. He loved being on the boat and he loved being with his family and the boat was a tradition in your summers. You used to take the boat out to a small little island only an hour away and spend the day swimming, laughing and grilling before going back home in the evening when the light had already gone away and the city lights illuminated in the water.
However the only thing he could concentrate on all day was you in your tiny little bikini that barely left anything to the imagination. If he was realistic it was a normal bikini, but it was still tiny and he could barely keep his eyes off of you.
When you had been exiting from the water with your hair drenched and dripping with a huge smile on your face he had stared so long that Blanca had hit him in the back of the head with a scolding look and Carlos had coughed, looking away feeling guilty.
It was a nice day, the sun grilling your skin and everyone was happy that summer had finally arrived. Carlos' parents grilled over the open fireplace as everyone settled down, chatting lowly and laughing.
He enjoyed it, laughing and joking with you and his sisters, chatting with his parents. Swimming in the hot sun. It was a great day but when the time came and you decked the boat and walked up to the villa Carlos felt like he would snap off the tension in his body.
-
He still couldn't really grasp it, couldn't grasp how attracted he suddenly was to you.
He groaned as he collapsed down on his bed, his head in an awkward position against the headboard. He let out an annoyed groan and flopped down in an ungraceful movement.
He felt annoyed, tight like a string as he tried to sit more comfortably. He was hard in his sweatpants and that annoyed him more than anything else. He felt ridiculous, like a teenage boy watching a pornmagazine for the first time. All this for only a little bikini, it was ridiculous but he couldn't help it, couldn't make it go away.
He closed his eyes, groaning when the only thing he saw in his head was just in that stupid little bikini. He couldn't help it when his hand crept down his body, his mind telling him it was wrong but the satisfaction he felt when he finally wrapped his hand around his cock pushed away all those thoughts until the only thing he could think about was dirty dreams.
At first the pictures were more okay, if there were something like this in picturing his sister's younger friend while jerking off.
It was you, in that bikini you had stropped around in all day, your smile and your elegant figure. Then it was your lips, then it morphed into your lips wrapped around his cock and from there on he was screwed.
He pictured how you would look as you sucked him off, he could picture the look in your eyes as you would’ve licked over his tip, he could almost hear the sounds you would make as he pushed your head that slight bit further.
He pictured laying you down on his crisp white sheets, pictured how he would pull your legs apart, could hear your moans in his head.
He could almost taste her on his tongue, see her face contorted in pleasure. His mind wandered further and further away from reality as his hand moved up and down his shaft. He would feel guilty, he would feel so guilty afterwards but right now, at this moment he only felt pleasure and his thoughts only added to his arousal.
It was wrong, he knew it, but he didn't feel it. It felt fucking amazing, the pictures, the imaginition he had made him harder than he'd been in a long time.
He pictured your face as he would fuck you, imagining how hot you would feel around him, how tight you would be. He pictured the sounds you would make as he made you orgasm, the picture stuck in his head as he finally released with a long groan, head falling back as the relief finally washed over him.
Only then did the realization hit and he felt disgusted over himself. The cum on his skin added to the sick feeling in his chest. It was not normal. It was disgusting. Jerking off to Ana's best friend who was many years younger than himself just because he'd find out she'd been growing curves. He felt a tight feeling in his stomach, like he would need to throw up. He hurried into the bathroom and jumped into the shower like he was on fire.
His skin was red where he had roughly scrubbed the cum of his skin and he felt slightly better when he dressed in clean clothes and shook the water off his hair. Maybe it was okay.
The guilt however came back full force once he saw you on the sofa with Blanca, gossiping and laughing. He had to look away to swallow the lump in his throat that had formed.
-
You were sprawled out in one of the outdoor chairs next to Blanca in the hot sun. You had just been taking a dip in the ocean and was now drying up on the big deck of the Sainz's house.
"Do you think Carlos has anything against me?" you asked Blanca randomly, noticing the way she jerked up in her chair to give you a wild look.
"Que?! Carlos loves you silly" she waved you off. Summer at Sainz, anything with the Sainz's had been always consisting in your life. You and Ana had met in kindergarten. She was two years older than you but somehow you had stuck together throughout school and then throughout adulthood. You had spent every summer since then here, in the amazing villa with her family. You had traveled with them, watched Carlos's races, you had been a part of them forever so maybe you understood her wild look but still. It had felt like something was bothering him these first couple of days. He had been acting slightly... stiff around you.
"I know... I don't know why but it's just.. he has been so awkward with me, barely spoken to me alone" you shrugged and Blanca hummed. "I think Carlos is having a bit of a crisis" Blanca grinned as she leant back in the soft chair
This time you sat up to give her a look. "What do you mean? Is something wrong with his racing?"
Blanca laughed and shook her head with a huge grin on her face. "No, not about racing" she calmed
"I think little Carlos is having a crisis about how gorgeous you have become" she smiled before adding "You have always been gorgeous, but over the winter..." she made a face expression as if to express the change and you giggled, it was true. You had matured in your body a lot over the winter, felt more comfortable, more secure.
"I don't think that's it though" you hummed, waving it off. Carlos was a formula one driver, he could basically chat up and model he wanted, and have the most gorgeous girls. He had many options, he would never choose you, his sister's friend.
"I think it is, I've catched him staring a bit too long and often. And every time I catch him with a slap on his head he looks extremely guilty"
You giggled at that, leaning back into the seat "I'm pretty happy with that reason to be honest" you smirked at Blanca who shook her head with a grin on her face "Watch it"
-
The next few days were fine, he still got a semi everytime you walked around in your mini bikinis and those shorts that showed all of your ass but he tried to control himself, felt he succeeded okay.
It was on the fourth day he snapped again. You had been taking a walk from the restaurant you had eaten at and stopped to buy ice cream and take a dip in the ocean.
You were yet again wearing only your bikini top and those tiny shorts that felt unnecessary to even have on because they didn't hide anything in Carlos's mind. Your hair was once again wet, dripping down your back and then it was the ice cream.
He knew it was just in his head, but it felt like you were provoking him, licking the tip of it in such a way he almost wanted to moan.
When he came back home he immediately walked up to his room and into the shower. He couldn't stop the images of going wild. Once again you were on the floor looking up at him with those big innocent eyes and licking the tip of his dick just as you had been the ice cream.
He could feel the tip of your tongue, could hear the small sound you surely would make at the taste of his precum that was pearling at his tip, he slid his thumb over it, imagining it was your tongue and he moaned loudly. He gripped his cock harder, slowly moving it down, imaging it was your mouth sinking down on him. The picture was so hot he jerked in his hold.
He sped up eventually, eyes closing to savor the filthy imaginations that were playing in his mind, like a slideshow. He could feel your touch, hear your voice and see you. It was all too much and he soon came over his hand, for the second time thinking about you.
He sighed as he let the water run down his body, cleaning him up and he let his head fall back against the tile. Maybe it was what it was. He would move on eventually, not get hard at the mere sight of you. It would be fine.
Carlos didn't fight it anymore, there was nothing he could do about his body's reaction. He sighed deeply and shrugged to himself. He lost the battle and he was really fucking attracted to you. Maybe that was just how it was now.

Dear Mr. Gaiman,
Regarding whether Aziraphale or Crowley could resurrect a person, you responded that they couldn't. However, the miracle they performed to hide Gabriel had a power equivalent to 25 Lazarii, meaning the strength to resurrect 25 people. From this, I deduce that they have enough power to resurrect someone, and here comes my question: why didn't they resurrect the scottish girl?
Best wishes,
Blanca
They didn't have the power. They could bring fish or birds back from the dead, but not people.

Can you write about her and the grid couple and her family dynamics like in details with each couple and family member?
Hi love! Sorry it took me so long. I hope this is what you were searching for! @zahwoka My request are always open. Feedback is welcome. -XoXo
Baby!Sainz Relationships
Carlos Sainz Sr. and Reyes Vázquez de Castro -I think there's not much to say here -the two of them were more than joyed to have another baby -she definitely has her Papá wrapped around her finger -so that means that her Mamá has to be the bad cop -they are quite protective of her -i mean, no parent wants to let their youngest daughter fly to Colombia alone and stay there for nearly one year (for Narcos) -they were always very supportive of her career -all in all they are the best parents she could ask for
Ana and Blanca Sainz -YAY -another sister -when i tell you, those two acted like she was a doll -Amira always goes to them when she has boy problems -they are definitely the type of sisters to color each others nails,do their Make-Up together,… -when they were kids, they always forced Carlos to play Barbie with them -ALWAYS -they always criticize each other -but if someone else dares to: you're never seen again -when they are older, they will live pretty close -they also never know who has whose clothes -they also encourage Amira to embrace her beauty and attention she receives -which only gives Carlos more gray hair (Senior ans Junior) -they are Amiras safe space -all in all they are like to Spanish Power-Puff-Girls
Carlos Sainz -Carlitos -poor little Carlitos -during his younger years he is so busy chasing away the boys -now it's the same thing, just that the boys became men -is a really protective brother -he was NOT happy when Amira went to Colombia -will buy her anything -"do you like the new Dior dress, hermanita? Let me get it for" -visits her quite often unexpected -he aged at least 20 years when his sister decided to wear crop tops -hates to leave her alone -it feels like he is dying -was very happy when she decided to attend his races -but he forgot about the drivers (and their girlfriends) -look it's not his fault that non of them are good enough for his darling sister -Carlos is her protector and always will be -a big spider in the room? Bring me tissue hermanita -a scary thunderstorm? He will hug her the whole time -he will always be there for her
Baby!Sainz isn't in a relationship the any of them, even though it may seem like that (But we all now she isn't the brightest out there)
Max Verstappen and Kelly Piquet -for some reason they give me Older couple x younger babygirl vibes -I mean there are not THAT old, but they kind of act like it -Max and Kelly are more mature than others (I mean, they do have Penelope) -so they would kind of treat her like an innocent babygirl -and they love it -"Don't worry Schatje, me and Kelly will do everything. You just sit here and look pretty" -Max is protective of her, but me thinks Kelly is a bit more -she doesn't like when guys are near her -she would sometimes pick clothes for her to wear -protective waist holding -they surely took her and P to a lot of ski trips -and Penelope? she adores Amira -I think if they would ever manage to get together with her, she would get babied a lot
Charles Leclerc and Alexandra Saint Mleux -Cottage Core Vibes -they are the definition of privat but not secret -i think they tease the internet the whole time with quite strange pictures -for example: Charles post a picture of Leo with clearly two women there -or Alex posting a mirror picture with Baby!Sainz in the background, In their bedroom -they are unsurprisingly very affectionately -words of assurance are a daily thing -always calling her jolie fille, petite fleur or dove -Alex and her would be all matchy-matchy when it comes to nails, shoes, clothes… -if Alex is wearing a white dress and Baby!Sainz a black one, be sure do expect Charles to wear a black jeans with a white shirt -they would spend the summer-break with her on the yacht -would treat her like a princess -Charles would write a song for her, of course -the prince of Monaco and his two princesses
Pierre Gasly and Francisca Gomes -Ok it might only be me that thinks like that but hear me out -I feel like Pierre and Kika a very possessive of her -no doubt they already manipulated her to spend more time with them -of course she wouldn't find out -if they are sitting somewhere, Pierre will have a hand on her thigh and Kika would play with her hair -and Amira would only be like: Oh physical touch is their love language -would tease her with their touches -when Kika buys her a necklace and puts it on her in front of a mirror while babygirl holds her hair up, she will definitely kiss her from the shoulder to her neck -or when Pierre helps her take of her heels, be sure to expect his hand to lightly touch her neck -we all know how much PDA those two like -they will not hesitate to do the same with her -in the club, when they are dancing, she will be in the middle -the hands will roam each other and….. -well babygirl surly isn't the smartest one out there -the will be possessive till the end of the world
Daniel Ricciardo and Heidi Berger -the fun couple -they call her Roo, because she is their very own Kangaroo -if Baby!Sainz ever seeks an adventure, she knows where she has to go -they would take her on late night drives -she wants McDonalds at 3am? No problem, let us grab our shoes -during the Australia GP she is certainly staying with them -they teach her how to surf and take her to the Australian Zoo -Of course, Babygirl has to sleep in their rooms -what if a big bad spider comes? -or a snake that wants to bite her? -only Heidi and Daniel can protect her -when they have a bond fire, Heidi will brush her hair and Daniel will take a hundred of pictures -and if she falls asleep in her lap while Daniel plays the guitar, that's no-ones business but their own
George Russell and Carmen Mundt -Old money vibes -they are without a doubt the couple that always celebrates each others accomplishments -George likes to show the two of them of -I mean, who wouldn't like to have those two by his side -they will take her anywhere -a family feats? Ohh honey, you have to meet my grandma -a Tommy Hilfiger shoot? Honey the always need more models -a vacation in Spain? Honey, you know George will get a sunburn without us -what really makes her heart race is when she is talking and they give her 1005 of their attention -she is actually always happy when George is shirtless -for example: the Watermelon picture (fr that was freaking hot) -their will always leave space in the middle for her -I think, they are quite protective
Oscar Piastri and Lily Zneimer -they give me the quite kind of love -shared glances -fleeting touches -i feel like they were quite shy with each other the first time they met -over time, they opened up more to each-other -now they will have a monthly movie night -her head on Lily's lap -her feet on Oscar's lap -they have insider jokes with each other -if Baby!Sainz ever needs quite time, they are the perfect couple for that -I imagine long walks on the beach during the sunset -sharing the same blanket and watching the sky
Alex Albon and Lily Muni He -like Pierre and Kika I think the are quite possessiv as well -They would certainly be the funny couple as well -but I think that they sometimes get quite jealous as well -they will post her often on Instagram -include her in all the fun activity's -however, if they think she spends to much time with someone unimportant, they always have a reason the get her away -"Oh my god, love! I have to show you this new bag i got you. It's blue and small and-oh hi George- and has a little glitter on it and…." -as I said -possessive -they would be the couple to cuddle her when she's sick -play with her fingers during a conversation -make her look at them with a hand under her chin
Extra: Rebecca Donaldson -she is like a third sister to Amira -always goes shopping with her -which doesn't make Carlos happy -they are the types to read the Vogue together and watch the Met Gala with each-other -Mira and Becca are a dream team -me thinks they have the quite kind of friendship -the giving advice to each-other and be complete honest -Carlos is happy that they get along amazingly, but what do you mean his sister is here to visit Rebecca and not him??????
Lewis Hamilton -let's be honest -we all have an older man crush -and hers is 100% Sir Hamilton -I mean, look at those hands -look at his tattoos -is the type to buy dresses for her -when she wants to go out, "here baby, use my credit card" -he can make her blush and giggle like a school girl -he would definitely be the soft but dominate partner -with him, she truly is babygirl -would buy the world for her -(Am I listening to Older by Isabel LaRosa? Yes!)
Lando Norris -oh boy -on one hand Lando would feel very guilty -it is his best freinds littles sister -but the heart wants what it wants -and his wants Amira Sainz -at first Lando would be kind of like a dork -trying to make her laugh all the time -taking her to go karting together -meeting his friends -but over time Lando would become more bolder -the hugs would linger -he would stare more -and the nicknames would include a my -"What did you do today, MY pretty girl?" -"MY darling, aren't you a sight fore sore eyes" -if she ever starts doubting herself, he will be the first one to stop her -would have one of her necklaces around his neck all the time -he would use stupid excuses to spend time with her -"my girl, can you help me with my curls again?" -he might have been Lando Norizz a long time ago -but now hes full of Rizz (?)

“So who’ve you got your eye on then, hmm?” Amelia questioned you as you sat across from her a chicken shop in London.
“Wha- I don’t have an eye on any-“ you started to laugh, feeling the camera pan in on you.
“Don’t lie, you’ve got to! You’re the breakout star of the year with your new film, and have caught the eyes of everyone, let’s be real!” She said smiling.
“Harry Styles?”
“He’s a sweetheart, but no.”
“C’mon, Drake?”
“No!” You laughed loudly. “He’s my older brother. Nothing going on there.”
“How about Jack Harlow?” She pressed you in a loving fashion.
“Yeah, Jack Harlow.” You tried to keep your composure, playing it off as a joke even though you did think he was cute.
“I’ve got an in with him you know? He took me out on a date once, different chicken shop though. Nothing further though, my eyes are more focused on Idris Elba.” She jokes.
The interview finishes filming after while later after some more banter and questions; and Amelia approaches you after.
“You know I can set you two up if you want? I have his number.” She offered, whipping out her phone and giving you an encouraged look.
“No, no that’s really okay.” You motioned at her, heat slightly running to your cheeks. “I’d rather get at him myself; or him at me. Not anyone in between.” You told her.
“Oh he’ll absolutely slide into your DM’s after seeing that. He won’t be able to resist you.” She laughed, giving you a wink before going to talk to her producers.
Nah, he’ll ignore it. It’s whatever! You thought to yourself, trying to release the nerves of Jack possibly reaching out.
The episode aired a few weeks later, and as you were getting ready for bed, you got a certain notification.
jackharlow wants to message you.
“Oh shit.” You said, eyes widening and sitting up in your bed. Immediately you called your best friend.
“Hey boo-boo, what’s up?” She answered the FaceTime snacking on a cookie.
“Yeah, so fuckin’ Jack Harlow just DMed me?”
“Bitch!-” She lept up out of her seat, pushing her face closer to the camera/ “What did he say?!” She yelled excitedly.
“I don’t know! I haven’t opened it yet.” You stared at your DMs, fidgeting with your nails.
“Bitch I swear if you don’t open it right the fuck now-“ she urged you.
“Wait, lemme just wait a few minutes, I don’t want him to see me see his message yet-“ you compromised with her as she rolled her eyes, but let you be. You finally decided to open it and see what he said.
He had sent the instagram post from Chicken Shop Date with a message.
jackharlow: 🙇‍♂️ it’s an honor to be crushed on by thee Y/N. But I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t been crushin’ on you for awhileee now tho.
“Oh god.” You mumbled in shock.
“What? What did he say?” Your best friend pressed you excitedly. You repeated his message out as she let out a squeal.
“AHHH I told you he’s into you too!! I see you girl, shiiiit lemme start with them manifestations you’re always doin’, I’m tryna get me some dick too.” She smirked at you.
You chewed at your lip before deciding on how to respond.
y/ninstagram: Oh really? 🤔 Amelia should’ve mentioned that when she tried to give me your number.
jackharlow: did you take it? 👀
y/ninstagram: nah, I like when people ask me out themselves.
jackharlow: good thing I asked her for your number. Can I call you right now?
You swallowed, hard.
“He wants to call me right now.” You told your friend.
“SHUT UP! Oh my god, okay BYE! Go make babies with that fine ass white man- call me after, love you boo.” She squealed before hanging up.
You looked as his message, and grinned to yourself as you hearted his message.
Soon enough, your phone rang, and your heart was beating out of your throat at this point. You took a small breath and exhaled before answering his FaceTime.
He was laid against some pillows, probably in his hotel room, wearing a blue zip up sweatsuit. His curls framed his face perfectly, and his teeth basically sparkled as he smiled at you.
“Hi Y/N, I’m Jack.” He said.
You rolled your eyes and laughed a little.
“I know. Hi Jack, how are you?” You asked.
“I’m good, better now.” He confidently responded. “And you?” He asked.
“I’m good.. a little tired from work, but good nonetheless. This was also a nice surprise.” You flirted back at him.
He smiled widely, and softly laughed. “Well I’m not gonna hold you up too long, beautiful. I just noticed you’re in London, and was wondering if you would like to come see my show on Friday? We could hang out after and have dinner if you’d like?” He asked in a charming tone.
“Yeah okay, that’d be really nice.” You agreed, biting your lip to hold back your excitement.
“Great. I’ll see you soon then mamas, sleep well.” He said before you said your goodbyes and hung up.
“Oh god.. what’d I just get myself into?” You shook your head, smiling to yourself in disbelief.
It was now Friday, and Jack was almost done with his show. You had FaceTimed him all week before today, and as well as the two of you had hit it off; the sexual tension was almost unbearable. He had met you at the entrance and introduced you to everyone before the two of you hung out in the green room for a bit. The two of you bonded and flirted; playful comments and touches thrown here and there before it was time for Jack to perform. Something felt different about him; like the way he made you laugh, like genuinely laugh - not the fake laugh you used in interviews and when meeting upper business executives. Jack was caring and respectful, it was like you could see how soft his heart truly was, with every smile and witty comment with a glint in his eye - it was like you could see his heart glowing. He brought you backstage where you got to hang out with his friend Urban and a few others while Jack performed. You danced and sang along with everyone, and every once in a while, Jack would look over and smile brightly as he saw you having a good time.
“I can see why he likes you.” Urban said as he stood next to you, cheering his best friend on from the sidelines.
You turned to face him, a smile still on your face as you watched Jack perform from the corner of your eye.
“Yeah? Hope it stays that way, ‘cause I kinda like him too.” You admitted to the blonde.
“Oh no doubt. I haven’t heard him talk this much about a girl before; I can’t get him to shut up.” He laughed. “But I see why, now.” He turned to look at you, smiling. You blushed and lightly bit at your lips, looking over at Jack again.
“Don’t gas me up too much now Urban, I may end up with an ego like your friend.” You joked, laughing with him as he put a friendly arm around you, continuing to sing and rap along with you as Jack put on an energetic show.
He finally finished with First Class, and the crowd was roaring. He thanked the crowd and made his way to the side of the stage where you stood.
“Sooo... what’d ya think? Not too bad I hope, I know I forgot some of the lyrics, but I think it was salvageable, no?” He said coming up to you; his dazzling smile and the dimples that accompanied it making you swoon.
“You were incredible, they loved you! Pretty sure they didn’t wanna let you go so soon.” You told him, eyes still wide at his work ethic and charisma he brought with him on stage.
“Mmm, so kinda how I feel about you then?” He smoothly commented, blue eyes never leaving yours.
“You still got me, we have dinner remember?” You countered, giving him a wink.
“Of course, I could never forget. It’s all I’ve been thinking about this week.” He flashed another smile. “Let me just shower real quick, and then we can get going, yeah?” He said, and you nodded.
“I’ll be quick, I promise!” He yelled to you as he sprinted to his green room like his life depended on it, making you giggle.
When he was ready, Jack told his team he wanted to take a car alone with you, and he guided you outside with him, holding your hand as the two of you talked about any and everything. He opened the door and helped you into the car before jogging over to the driver’s seat.
“So I realized I never asked you what you wanted to eat- M’sorry about that, but there’s Italian, Chinese, or maybe you want something authentic since we’re in England-” Jack started to nervously babble as he pulled out of the parking lot before he felt you kiss his cheek.
“No need to apologize Jack, I think it’s very cute that you wanna plan all of this out. But you must be tired no? D’ya wanna just go back to your hotel and order room service?”
“I’m not that tired, plus I’m tryna treat this amazing girl with what she deserves; the very best.” He said. “Unless you wanna do that? I’m down for whatever you want, really.” He answered honestly.
You gently kissed his hand that was intertwined with yours.
“You’re too sweet. But I’ve always been a low-key, take out at home kinda girl. You can save the fancy dates for later on.” You smiled at him.
“Room service it is then. Whatever my girl wants.” He grinned at you, changing course to his hotel.
Jack basically ordered the entire menu, just so the two of you would have options, even though you told him it wasn’t necessary, he insisted.
The two of you ate and talked, sharing laughs and playful touches as some Netflix show played in the background; neither of you paying attention to it anymore. You were now sitting next to him, his arm slung around the back of the couch, yearning to feel his touch, but you could tell he was ever the gentleman, not wanting to push any boundaries, but at this point, you were desperate to feel him.
You turned you head and looked at him, and he did the same, meeting your eyes. You admired the golden, wispy, wiry tufts of facial hair that sculpted his face perfectly, his soft ringlet curls that made you want to lightly pull on them to see them spring back into place, his blue eyes - which were anything but cold, the slope of his nose, the freckled that adorned his cheeks; and finally, his pink lips that looked so soft and supple, you couldn’t hold back anymore.
You leant in and kissed him, with Jack kissing you back passionately.
“Fuck, I’ve wanted to that all night, all week really.” He breathed out after you pulled away.
“Me too, Harlow.” You giggled at him before he pulled you back in for another kiss.
What started out as innocent and mellow, the kiss diverged into a heated make-out session. You turned to straddle Jack as he helped you into his lap, his hands roaming your body, before he started to kiss your neck and down to your chest.
“Fuck, Jack-” you moaned out, his every touch electrifying you.
“S’it feel good, sweetheart?” He asked, like he wasn’t about to combust with you on his lap.
“So good.. really good,” you whimpered softly, starting to rut your hips into his, the friction from his jeans hitting against your clothed clit deliciously.
You tugged at his curls, earning a low groan from him, as you pulled his head up from your neck, devouring him in another heated kiss. Jack moaned into your mouth, his tongue finding yours as you continued to rock against him.
“Bed, Jack- bed, please baby.” You whispered to the curly haired boy.
“You sure? D-Don’t wanna make you feel like you gotta do anything-” He stuttered.
“Such a gentleman, Jack Harlow.” You smiled at him before lowering your lips to his, pressing a soft kiss to him.
“But, I want this, and by the strain I can feel through your pants, I’m pretty sure you want the same thing.” You whispered in his ear, making him shiver and groan.
“You’re gonna be the death of me Y/N, I swear.” Jack said before picking you up in his arms, making you squeal and giggle as he brought the two of you to his bed. He gently tossed you onto the white sheets, and kissed you, slowly grinding against you as he held your head in his hands intimately. After a few more minutes of soft gasps and groans, and groping eachother, you couldn’t take it anymore.
“Please Jack, fuck me.” You told him. He stopped momentarily, and let out a sigh of defeat. You froze. Maybe he didn’t want this? Had you misconstrued his signals? Was he not into it anymore?
“Get out of that pretty little head of yours. I want to, believe me I want to - god I can’t even believe I’m saying no to you right now-” He started, eyes boring into yours with a genuine warmth. “But I like you too much, I really don’t wanna fuck this up with you by going too fast, too soon.” He explained.
Your heart melted at his words, how the hell did this sweetheart of a man fall into your lap?
“Yeah, I get it.” You said. “We have plenty of time to get to that later on.” You agreed, despite your pussy scolding you for denying her what you could only imagine as ‘life changing dick’.
Jack smiled at you, relived you understood where he was coming from. He kissed you again, savoring the taste of you, the feeling of you on him.
“Buuut...” he started, leaving warm hot kisses along your neck. “That doesn’t mean we cant have a lil’ fun.” Jack said as his hands began to run down your sides.
“Oh yeah?” You feigned obliviousness. “What’d you have in mind?” You asked.
“Just wanna make you feel good, s’that okay baby?” He asked, continuing to kiss you.
“Yes, more than okay.” You breathed out, his touch making your head spin.
“Just tell me to stop and I’ll stop, no questions asked.” He told you, squeezing your hand in reassurance.
Jack kissed down your neck, kissing between the valley of your clothed breasts, down to where the skin of your tummy peeked out - kissing right above your navel, and all over your pooch. His hands slid up the skirt you were wearing and you momentarily thanked god in your head that you decided against pants today. His fingertips reached the lace of your panties, and he pressed his thumb against your clit through your panties.
“Fuck- just like that, yeah.” You whined.
“So wet, shit-, this all for me?” He inquired
“Yes-, all for you Jack, just you.” You cried out as he continued to rub you through the thin material.
“Fuck Y/N, you have no idea what you do to me..” he groaned out, as he rutted his hips against the mattress, desperate for a little relief.
His fingers tucked into the waistband of your panties, and he looked at you to see if you had a change of heart. You smiled at him.
“Please Jack, make me feel good.” You bit your lip, pleading for him to make a move.”
“Your wish is my command, princess.”
Jack pulled your panties from your pussy, a string of arousal connecting between the two before it broke as he threw the black thong to the side.
Without warning, Jack dipped his head between your legs and began to eat you out.
“Fuck! Oh my god- yesyesyes-“ you cried out as he demolished your sweet pussy. His nose pressed on your clit with the perfect amount of pressure, rubbing against you as he pulled at your hips to nuzzle his face closer against your cunt.
“God you taste phenomenal, of course you fuckin’ do.” He laughed before taking your hands in his intertwining your fingers as he dove back into your pussy, face first.
Jack alternated between licking and tongue fucking you, and sucking and kissing your clit, driving you crazy at how fucking good he was at this.
You felt your core tighten, your release close. “G-gonna cum Jack, fuck don’t stop-“ you moaned, your hands squeezing his as you rutted your hips against his face. Jack let go of your hands and settled them on your hips with a firm grip. He groaned and the vibration from his throat sent you over the edge.
“Oh, shitshitshit, ah!” You cried out, your hands in his hair now, pulling on his curls as you rode your orgasm out. Jack kept sucking on your clit, overstimulating you until you pushed at his head.
You laid back in the sheets, sweat gleaming on your skin as a few strands of hair stuck to your forehead; and Jack was mesmerized at the sight. He couldn’t picture anything else more beautiful than your blissed out face- eyes screwed shut, lips puffy from your precious make-out sesh, and your skin gleaming so beautifully from the orgasm he just caused you to have.
He crawled up next to you as you recovered from your intense orgasm, kissing your lips a few times before planting a kiss on your forehead and bringing you into his arms.
“Fuck, you’re really good at that.” You finally broke the silence. Jack let out a hearty laugh as he pulled you closer to him.
“Thanks. I’ve been meaning to practice some more though be a little more selfless, ya know?” He joked.
“Well, anytime you’re in the spirit of giving again, don’t be afraid to hit my line.” You laughed into his neck.
“Trust me baby, you’ll be the first and only person I call.” He chuckled, bringing you into another sweet kiss.

how about readers friends judging her for liking baby jack and wanting to date the “wannabe rapper”
"Y/N, out of all the boys in this school you like Jackman?" Victoria asked while looking over at you. She didn't exactly turn up her nose about it, but you could tell that she didn't approve 100%.
You were currently staring off into space thinking about how the two of you were going to study later and then go get ice cream. It was Friday and the two of you would usually stay up talking all night in your backyard as you taught him all about space. You didn't know if he was into it like you were, but he always took his time to listen to you and make it known that your interests were important to him.
"Yes. What about it?" You asked as her, Blanca, and Jess shared a look.
"But why do you like him? I just…" Jess started to say, but you cut her off.
"I just love being around him. He was the first person I met when I came here and now he's truly one of my best friends. The blue eyes and curly hair are a plus. What's the big deal?"
"Not you crushing on the wannabe rapper." Blanca said and all you did was roll your eyes.
"He's really good. I actually think he'll get signed one day."
"A white boy from Kentucky? You can't be serious."
"People already believe that people in Kentucky can't read so what makes you think that they are going to take a rapper and a WHITE boy at that seriously in the industry?"
"We are only fifteen and he's only going to get better. And I help him write songs too. I know he’s going to catch the eye of someone in the industry and get signed."
"Y/N, as amazing as that sounds, I just don't think so."
"You three are supposed to be my friends and be encouraging and positive towards me."
"We are your friends! We might not know him as well as you do but…"
"Exactly. You don't know him as well as I do. I wish you three would take some time to get to know him and be able to see what I see. I really do like him and I like him a lot. He's the person that I spend most of my time with."
"We're just trying to get you to be realistic. And the friends he hangs around? They're a little questionable too."
"They treat me like I'm one of them."
"Exactly. So since Jack only probably sees you as one of the boys, do you think he likes you like you like him?"
"I think so. At least Urban told me he does and he tells him everything."
"We just… don't want you to get hurt."
"We want to look out for you."
"I'll be just fine." You answered while looking away from them so they wouldn't see you upset.
Just then Jack came up behind you and covered your eyes and all you did was laugh.
"Guess who?"
"Hmm, my husband Justin Bieber?" You answered and all you heard was Jack suck his teeth.
"Seriously?!"
"Are you going to sing my favorite song for me?"
"Now what makes you think I know any of his songs? Even though your favorite is One Less Lonely Girl… or so I've heard." Jack asked as he finally uncovered your eyes to sit next to you.
"Ladies." He said while greeting Jess, Blanca, and Victoria who told him hello in response.
"Because when I was sick, you kept me company as I kept playing it over and over again. When you get signed you better meet him and put in a good word for me so we can get married."
"Not if I marry you first." Jack quietly said and the only person who caught what he said was Jessica who got a small smile on her face.
"I didn't hear you, what did you say?" You asked him and all he did was smile and shake his head.
"Oh, nothing. Now, where did you want to go to get ice cream later?"

Jack Harlow x Reader : BABY MAMA DRAMA
A/N : A whole other universe from my other AUS. Read this first 🎭 appearances by @hoodharlow 🫶🏻
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You knew Jack since you were little kids running around the block. He was there when you scraped up your knee and needed stitches. He was there when you needed braces, he was there when your goldfish died.
He was your best friend.
Best friend who shared with you all of his dreams. Dreams that you encouraged and made sure he kept going and make those dreams come true.
Then best friends turned into lovers. It was a beautiful and wonderful thing. Everything was perfect. He had gotten signed to a record label and he was being recognized all over the world.
You were there besides him through it all, day in and day out. He made promises, promises that he sometimes failed to see through, but you still stood besides him, because you loved him.
Once his album ``Come Home The Kids Miss You'' was released, everything went downhill. You ended up pregnant and alone. He would be busy with work or simply not showing up.
You would confront him but all he would do is kiss you and tell you he’d make it up to you. Which you were an idiot and believed every word he said.
The first time he got caught was when he said he would be in the studio but his location would say otherwise. You never bothered to check his whereabouts, but being pregnant and hormonal, it made you do things you never thought you’d do.
The second time, he told you he had an appearance at a club in Atlanta. Imagine your surprise when you go on social media and see him partying with influencers in Los Ángeles.
He continued to make promises and you stayed, stayed because he was your comfort, but the nail in the coffin was when he didn’t even show up to the birth of your child.
Once you laid eyes on your perfect little boy, you knew you weren’t about to let Jack do whatever he pleases with you. You weren’t about to fall for his beautiful blue eyes and beautiful smile.
So when he came home three days after you gave birth and was released from the hospital, you told him it was over. He being the cocky and confident man he is, he thought you were joking.
So what you did next was pack your things and move out of your shared home. He didn’t even come searching for you or your son.
His family? His family were there alongside you through it all. His mom would apologize for his son's actions, but you assured her it wasn’t her fault.
Now three years later you’re finally in a good place physically and mentally. Growing and learning and you weren’t about to let anyone ruin that.
*********
“Tell me this bitch is joking.” Your cousin Blanca says as she enters your living room.
“Que pasó?”
“Your dumb ass baby daddy is what happened.”
“Girl, can you stop trying to fight the man? Let it go, I did.” You tell her chuckling.
“No, he hurt you and he wasn’t even around. He wants to act like the perfect father online when he’s barely even getting to know his kid.”
“I mean-“
“Go to his Instagram and you’ll see why I’m even more pissed. Pendejo que es.”
You grab your cellphone, “Blanca I’m sure it’s nothing ba- ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?”
“So are we driving to his moms house and beating the fuck out of the bitch?”
“NO, you’re crazy Blanca.”
“You know they’re doing that shit to get you to react?” Your best friend says, scrolling through the comments on Jack’s Instagram post.
“Well it worked, I’m pissed. How dare he?”
“What are you going to do?.”
You shrug, “I don’t know but I have to pick up my son from Maggie’s house later tonight. I just hope they’re not there because I’ll probably do something I’ll regret.”
“Did you tell Maggie it was fine for Jack to be around?”
“In my opinion, he shouldn’t even be able to know anything about my nephew. He wasn’t around for any doctor appointments, he wasn’t around when you gave birth.” Blanca tells you, getting frustrated.
You understand your prima completely, she and your best friends did everything Jack was supposed to do. They even moved to be near you and your son, so their feelings towards Jack are totally valid and you respect that.
You nod, “I know B, but I didn’t want my son to grow up without a dad like me. It’s a messed up situation between Jack and me, I don’t want my son to witness that.”
“I know but that shit he pulled is uncalled for.”
“Oh yeah completely and he’ll be hearing about it when I pick up Adrian.” You say.
“You do know we’re coming with you right?” Your best friend tells you.
“Yup, most definitely. What if his girl is there?.” Blanca adds.
You chuckle “Están locas ustedes, but yes I know.”
“So are we going for sexy milf or comfort clothes tonight.”
You shake your head but head towards your bedroom in search of an outfit. Your cousin and bestie are following right behind you.
***********
You were now outside of Maggie’s house to pick up Adrian and you noticed Jack’s jeep was in the driveway.
“Don’t slash his tires Blanca.” You say getting out of your car.
“Bitch I wasn’t. But good thinking.”
“I can’t with your crazy ass.”
You’re now by the front door of the house and ring the doorbell. You can hear little footsteps running towards the door.
“Mama.” Your son yells once the door is opened and runs to you.
“Hola mi amor, ¿cómo estás?” You carry him and kiss all over his face.
“Missed you mama.” He tells you and kisses you on your cheek.
“I missed you too, did you have fun with your grandma? And tio Clay.?”
He nods then looks behind you “Tia Blanca hi.”
“Hi squirt, come on let’s take you with tia Drea.” Blanca looks at you. “I’ll be back.”
You nod and finally notice that the one who opened the door was Jack and not Maggie.
He’s standing there with his hands inside the pocket of his hoodie. “He missed you.”
I nod, “Yeah, he told me.”
“I know you’re probably pissed about some stuff that happened over the weekend and on social media.”
“You had no right to do that without speaking to me first. But this is not the place or time to talk about that. I have enough respect for your mom, I’m not going to cause a scene in her front door.”
“Then can we meet up tomorrow? I know I don’t deserve to even be speaking to you or being in my son's life but I want to be better, I want to do better for you and him.”
“I can’t tomorrow I’m busy.”
“With what?”
“That’s no concern to you at all.” Blanca says walking back towards you. “But she has a date.” She says smirking.
You turn and glare at her.
“A date? With who?” Jack asks.
You shake your head, “No, nope, not doing this with you. Is your mom home? I’d like to say bye to her and thank her for looking out for Adrian.”
“She’s taking a call.”
You nod, “Well I’ll be heading out.”
“Control your bitch next time. Don’t be having her under my nephews pictures. It’s messed up what you did. She feels some type of way, I’ll knock some sense into her if she comes near Adrian again.” Blanca tells him.
You hold back a laugh. “B come on let’s go.”
“Y/N, just text me the details of when we can meet.”
“I don’t have your number, I’ll reach out to Clay.” You say and head towards your car.
You don’t wait to see if he said anything else, you just wanted to leave. You didn’t even notice your cousin didn’t even follow after you.
You’re inside your car with your son and best friend.
“She’s probably laying it on him.” Drea says.
“Yup.”
*******
“Y/N is too nice but she has me, I’m not letting you hurt her or Adrian. If you’re not planning on being in his life one hundred, then don’t give that little boy hope.” Blanca tells Jack, staring him down.
“All due respect, that's none of your business, that’s between Y/N and me.”
Blanca chuckles, “You have no rights, Y/N is the one who decides who comes around Adrian, you should’ve known introducing your little girlfriend without asking Y/N first, was a mistake.”
“I didn’t mean to push any buttons. But I do have a life and if he’s going to be in mine, he needs to meet everyone from my circle, including my girl.” He says getting annoyed.
Blanca laughs, “Would you be okay if she introduced Adrian to her date tomorrow? Not that she will. But I can bet money that you’d feel some type of way.”
“Again, none of your business what we do with our son.”
“Este pendejo.” She’s glaring at Jack. “Do whatever you want man. But keep your bitch away from my nephew. I have no problem knocking her and Neelam out.” She says and walks away but not without flipping him off.
Jack is standing outside of his parents' doorstep and watches as you drive off with your son.
As soon as your car is out of the neighborhood. Jack is texting his best friend Urban.
Jack: Meet me tomorrow.
Urb: For?
Jack: Baby mama has a date.
Urb: ????
Jack: I want to see who it is.
Urb: NO!!!
Jack: Bro come on!!!!
Urb: Fine 🙄 🤦🏼‍♂️
Jack smiles and heads inside the house and starts planning what he’s going to do once he sees you on your little date.
He might have a girlfriend at home. But he has a son and he can admit he misses you and will try hard to get his family back. No one will stop him and his plans, not even Blanca.

a/n: this is my dream. carlos please pick me up so i can be besties with piñon and maybe your lover too ok goodbye i love this sm anon
⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅∙∘☽༓☾∘∙•⋅⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅
“Wait a minute!” You yelled out, running down the stairs of your apartment and fixing your hair in the mirror one last time before opening the door with a big smile on your face, “Love!”
“Hola, cariño,” Carlos smiled as he wrapped an arm around your waist, kissing your temple, “You ready to meet Piñon?”
“More than ever,” You nodded as you pulled away from his grasp, grabbing a paper bag by the table and shaking it, “I got him a few goodies!”
“Hm? What are those?” He laughed, heart growing more fond of you from how excited you were to meet his best friend, “Bribery?”
Frowning as you punched his arm playfully, you grabbed your coat and purse before walking back to him, “Shut up. I got him some treats and a new toy with a tiny little hat for Christmas season!”
“You’re too cute, amor,” Carlos grinned as he gently pinched your cheek and locking your apartment door for you, “Means a lot to me, you know?”
“Genuinely, I really am excited to meet Piñon,” You replied as you hugged him from behind for a short moment, “I need his seal of approval from him so I can date you properly.”
Carlos laughed as he opened the car door for you, letting you in before climbing in his side of the car, “Mamá’s excited to see you too, you know?”
“I feel like I haven’t seen your family in so long,” You frowned as you buckled up your seatbelt, “I promised I’d let her teach me some of your favorite dishes.”
“Such wife material already,” Carlos grinned as he drove back to his family house, a hand resting on your thigh, “Ana and Blanca are annoying me to letting you have a girls day with them.”
“I want to have one!” You nodded eagerly, head turning to the side as you faced him, “I need some blackmail material from them.”
“Chica traviesa,” He mumbled as he slightly patted your leg, laughing in the process, “They’re going to interrogate you about…me. Whether or not I’ve been good.” Naughty girl.
“Hm, have you been good?” You playfully teased him, a finger resting on your chin, pretending to think, “Maybe…”
“Ay, Y/N,” Carlos laughed as he softly pinched your side, “I’ve been good!”
“Says the person who keeps hogging the comforters when he comes over!” You laughed as you slapped his hand away, “Minus points for you, love.”
“Maybe it’s just my way so you can cuddle up to me more,” He grins as he pulls up to his family house, parking the car next to the others, “Ready?”
“Of course I am,” You smiled as you grabbed your purse and bag, “Crossing my fingers he likes me.”
“Trust me, mi amor,” Carlos smiled as he got out of the car, opening your door for you and wrapping an arm around your waist while you walked inside the house together, “Wait here, okay?”
Nodding in response, you took a seat out in the patio, taking in the breath of fresh air. You set your bag down next to you as you hummed, waiting for Carlos to come back.
“Ay, Piñon! Cálmate! Siéntate, siéntate,” Carlos chuckled as he held onto Piñon’s leash, “Es hora de que conozcas a tu futura mamá, hm?” Ay, Piñon! Calm down! Sit, sit. Time for you to meet your future mom, hm?
Turning around from your seat, you smiled brightly as you saw Carlos walking up towards you, Piñon jumping beside him.
Covering your mouth, you giggled as you found the sight before you to be the most adorable thing ever. Carlos smiled as he waved you over, “C’mon, mi amor. I told him to be nice.”
Leaving your bag on the chair, you held onto the bag that contained his gifts, you cautiously walked over to the two of them. You smiled as you crouched down to his height, holding your hand out for him to sniff.
“Hola, Piñon,” You whispered as the dog sniffed your hand, coming closer to you, “Mi nombre es Y/N. Tengo algo para ti.” Hi, Piñon. My name is Y/N. I have something for you.
Piñon barked as his tail wagged happily, nuzzling his head on your hand. You laughed as you sat down on the grass, pulling the bag out from behind you.
“Pollo o carne?” You grinned as you pulled out two bags of treats, Piñon barking and nudging the bag with the chicken flavored ones, “Okay, buddy. Here.” Chicken or beef?
You took out a few treats from the bag, placing it on your hand as Piñon happily ate it, “Te gusta, eh? Es delicioso?” You like it, huh? It’s delicious?
Piñon barked happily as he stayed closer near you, you smiled as you rubbed his head and scratched his chin, “You’re such a good boy, hm?”
Carlos smiled as he crossed his arms, watching the two of you get along so well, “Told you he’s nice.”
“Certainly nicer than you when we first met,” You teased as you stroked Piñon’s back, hugging the dog, “I wanna keep him.”
“Ay, I was nice to you,” Carlos clicked his tongue as he walked over to the two of you, crouching down to kiss the top of your head and scratching Piñon’s chin, “He’s such a Sainz, hm? Getting your heart so quickly?”
“Shut up,” You rolled your eyes playfully as you continued to rub Piñon’s back, “Piñon has my heart now.”
“What about me?”
“No,” You grinned as you looked up at him, “If we get a dog, then we’ll talk.”
Carlos clicked his tongue as he pinched your cheek, “Ay, fine. Next week.”
bonus scene!
Carlos went out for a day of karting with his friends, he decided that you could spend the day with his mother and sisters back at home.
As he entered the house, he took off his shoes and threw his keys on the table, “Cariño! I’m back!”
Blanca immediately ran up to him from the kitchen, bringing a finger up to her mouth, panic written all over her face, “Shush! Cállate, idiota! La vas a despertar!” Be quiet, idiot! You’re going to wake her up!
“Ay, lo siento,” Carlos smiled sheepishly as he whispered back, following his sister to the living room, “Tuviste un buen día con ella?” Ay, I’m sorry. Did you have a good day with her?
“Sí,” Blanca nodded as she smiled, leaning against the archway, “Parece que Piñón la ama más ahora.” Yes. It looks like Piñon loves her more now.
Carlos looked up to see the sweetest thing right before his eyes – Piñon curled up in your arms as the two of you peacefully slept on the couch.
“Yo también lo creo,” He chuckled softly as he smiled, falling for you even more than he realized, “Tuve mucha suerte esta vez, supongo.” I think so too. I got lucky this time around, I guess.
Blanca smiled as she patted her brother’s arm gently, “Cuídala, de acuerdo? Ella es una chica dulce.” Take care of her, okay? She’s a sweet girl.
Carlos nodded with a smile, “Por su puesto que lo hare. Piñón cerró el trato, ella es mi futuro.” Of course, I will. Piñon sealed the deal, she’s my future.
You didn’t hear the words that came out of Carlos’ mouth that moment, maybe you didn’t need to. All that matters was that Carlos knew for sure that you’re his present, and he will do what he can to make you his future.

____________________
Carlos hadn’t seen the message until the next morning.
A message from a number he thought forgot about him. For a moment, he wondered if it could be true. If it was real.
“Hey! I’m sorry this is so out of the blue, I know it’s been a while. I hope you’re doing good, I watch your races so just know I’m always rooting for you. I miss being at the races with you, it was always so fun. I’m sorry it’s been so long. But I wanted to invite you to my weddign, which will be next month. I’ve sent an invitation to your family, I hope that’s alright. I wanted to invite you myself because I could not imagine that day without you. Let me know if you can make it, I know how busy you are. Love you.”
Then, right under it, is a smaller bubble that reads:
“Text me back if you can. I miss you.”
Carlos thinks he might be sick. He rereads the message, pulling his phone closer to his face. He can’t stop himself from whispering her name. It’s been years. This girl, his girl. His entire life, she’s been there, since he was little. They were fast friends, but, of course, to Carlos, it was more than that.
To him, it was everything.
__________
“Someone has a crush on Carlito!”
Her brothers were running around them, stomping across the grass. She groaned at them, they had moved twice - each time prompted by them coming around to pick at their sister. Carlos liked to giggle at it, he and Blanca weren’t as rambunctious.
Carlos knew that they liked to pick on her, but would always stop the moment she began to cry. She was their baby sister after all.
“Shut up! I do not!”
Her face was a violent red, the blush spreading up to her ears. She huffed, crossing her arms over her chest, and puffing her cheeks. Her brothers come to pull at her hair, pinching at her sides. She whines for them to leave her alone and Carlos can only giggle.
He thinks about what they’ve said. A crush? On him? The thought alone makes his face go hot. That kind of thing, with moms and dads and kissing. He hadn’t given it much thought.
Would it be so bad? Carlos didn’t think so. He thought that if he did have to marry anyone, he’d like it to be her. She liked racing and played golf with him.
“Maybe Carlito has a crush on you!”
“Stop!”
Carlos looked down at his lap. Did he? He pulls at the skin of his fingertips, his head full of thoughts. He shakes his head, trying to laugh it away, “No way!” He says.
It’s easier like that.
When he looks over at her, she’s staring straight at him, a smile on her face.
“We’re best friends!” She declares, glaring over at her brothers, “Right?”
“Right!” Friends. If she wanted to be friends, Carlos thought that was perfect. “Best friends.”
Because even friends could marry each other, right?
__________
He spent the morning staring at his phone.
Carlos thought that perhaps it would go away, fade into nothingness, but it was still there, a blue bubble glaring right at him. He had spent hours rereading it, so much so that he was sure he could recite it from memory.
‘I miss you.’
He squeezed his eyes shut. The memories of her were something that he kept away. Secret treasures that he held so close to his heart. Even after all these years, at just the simplest phrase, Carlos could feel his heart begin to pound.
It was only her.
It would only ever be her.
Evidently, he recalls bitterly, he wasn’t it for her. Carlos has to stop himself from throwing the phone. Even in the darkness of his mind, he can see those words. He can hear her voice, reading them aloud. It makes him sick.
He knew that they would meet again - he prayed for it - but never like this. It wasn’t fair. Almost cruel, he thinks, that he would be subject to loving her for the rest of his life. But, how beautiful it is to love her.
He thinks of her smile. The smallest quirk of her lips, something so shy and tiny. It was only full with him, or at least, it was. His mind wanders to who she might be now. There’s a part of him that knows he could find out, the quickest search of her name would tell him everything.
But there’s a reason he hasn’t, he was afraid of seeing her happy without him.
He couldn’t.
Carlos sighed.
His chest was heavy with emotion. There was a sea of them - anger, sadness, happiness, longing. He might just explode. Fall apart on his couch and just a mess of a man.
They were so young then. Just kids. Carlos thinks of the irony, they used to sit and laugh at the thought of people getting married so young. Thinking that you could devote yourself to someone you hardly knew, he remembers how they thought it was so stupid.
It isn’t as funny anymore.
__________
When Carlos got the call from Red Bull he cried.
His father had been pacing the room with him, talking about his chances and pondering on the season. But as soon as that phone rang, he was right at Carlos’ side, already pulling him into a hug as soon as he confirmed a date for contract negotiations.
It was his time.
His start was here and now.
When he managed to calm himself down, he called her.
She picked up and screeched in his ear when he broke the news.
“OH MY GOD! CARLOS! YOU DID IT!”
He started to cry all over again, “...I know…”
“I’m coming over,” She said hurriedly, he could hear her bustling around the room.
“Wait! You don’t have to -” She’d already hung up on him.
He was waiting outside for her, fidgeting with the dirt around the steps of his house. The excitement was buzzing in his veins, he could still hardly believe it. She rode up only a few moments later, dropped her bike onto the lawn, and ran up to him. He caught her in a hug.
Carlos couldn’t help the few tears that escaped him. His dream was finally happening. He would finally get the chance to be known as more than just the son of Carlos Sainz, he was going to make a name for himself.
He couldn’t wait.
When she pulled away, she was quick to seize his shoulders, “You did it!”
He could only smile, there was so much joy, he was bursting with it.
“I’m so proud of you, Carlos,” She said, smiling up at him.
He felt his face go red. She would never understand how much those words would mean. Everyone could hate him, everyone could be against him, but so long as she wasn’t, he could do anything. Since the very beginning, she had always been his biggest supporter. Every race she could go to, she was at. It got harder as he climbed the ranks, races were farther and farther. But it always seemed like she just knew.
When he would come back she would insist on a very detailed account, getting angry with him when he left anything out. She claimed it made her feel like she was there. Carlos always just rolled his eyes, but he could never deny how much he loved it. To know that she wanted him to do well.
It made every victory sweeter and every loss harder.
Above all, he hated losing in front of her. To know that she was watching, to know that she could see him fail. He hated it. But she always said that even champions have bad seasons, it wasn’t untrue, but Carlos hated it nonetheless.
They had moved to the steps of his house. Sitting beside one another, their knees touching, she bumped him with her shoulder.
“So, you’re going to remember me when you’re rich and famous?”
He rolled his eyes, “I don’t know. I’ll probably be super busy being too cool.”
“You are not cool.”
“Whatever,” He shrugged, “Don’t come crying to me when I’m champion.”
“As if,” She shoved him, he caught himself on the step and turned to her.
He began to laugh before hooking his arm around her neck, “Of course, I’ll remember you.”
‘I love you.’
“You’re my best friend.”
She looks up at him. Carlos thinks that there’s something that passes across her face, but then, it’s gone. She smiles a true smile. Wide and beautiful.
“Good.”
_________
His mother calls him on the way to a meeting.
As much as he wishes he could just let the phone ring, he knows he can’t.
As soon as he answers, she’s gushing in his ear, “Carlito, I can’t believe she’s getting married! How wonderful! She will be the most beautiful bride! The invitation is just gorgeous.”
He lets her speak, leaning back in his seat. It hurts to know that his mother is so excited. He always thought that she wanted him to marry her, that’s what she always said when he was a kid. Maybe everyone let it go but him.
“Did you know about this?”
“No, Mama,” He lies. It’s awful, lying to her. He can’t try to explain his feelings now, there’s still a part of him that wishes they’d go away. Hoping to drown himself in whatever work Ferrari will give him. The pain burns and he just wants to breathe again.
“We should send her something,” She adds, he can hear her moving around the house. He wonders if she has the invitation in his hand.
He hums, trying to keep the anger from his voice. This wasn’t her problem and he wasn’t going to make it hers. She doesn’t need to know - even if she did, what would she do?
His mother seems to think for a moment, humming a mindless tune before saying, “You should send her something!”
Carlos nearly chokes.
“What?”
“Yes!” Her voice is so bright, “You two were so close, why not send her something? A ‘congratulations’ of sorts. Yes, that would be nice.”
“Mama…” He begins, unsure of how to tell her, “I - I don’t know -”
“Carlos,” She warns.
With a sigh, he just hums again, “I’ll look into it.”
“Good,” He can hear the excitement ramp up in her voice again, “Isn’t this just so beautiful?”
Carlos can’t respond.
It isn’t. It makes him sick. The very thought of it makes him want to cry and scream. Anger burns within him, stomach twisting. He hates this. He hates it because he loves her. He loves her more than anything.
“It is.”
__________
It was quiet, the summer sun dancing on their skin. A breeze pulling through the air, tall grass blades dancing. The smell of the garden roses drifting around them.
Carlos’ heart was pounding, thudding against his ribs, nearly jumping into his throat. He tried to swallow the anxiety that nearly lept from him, but the nerves in his stomach made it impossible. He felt like he was choking. Just sitting beside her, so close, but so far.
He could feel the heat of her hand, he yearned to touch her, to intertwine their fingers. It wouldn’t be wrong, they held hands a lot back then, but he wasn’t sure he could do it, afraid his heart would’ve exploded.
“What is it?” She looked over at him, her eyes trying to pry the information out of him.
He tore his face away, fists clenching at his side. He was always so afraid to tell her. Just a boy terribly in love with a girl, but he could never bring himself to say it. When he tried the words would abandon him and he would just end up brushing it off.
But there, in the silence of the garden, he knew there was no hiding it. Not when she was boring a hole into the side of his head. She stared right through him. He took his lip between his teeth, horrified at the thought of it all slipping out.
She would hate him. If he ever dared to say something like that she would kill him, he was so sure. It’s funny to look at it now, but he just focused on the blades of grass beside him. The green was bright and strong, small weeds blooming within the folds of dirt. He reached over to pluck at a dancing flower, but his hand was caught.
She grabbed him, fingers around his wrist. Her hold was hardly there, he could break free from it if he wanted. But he didn’t want to. He wanted to stay there with her.
He was sure that she could feel his racing heart, but she said nothing. Just bringing her hand up to rest in his palm. His stomach flipped, and he shut his eyes.
This wasn’t like him. Carlos had never been a coward, but for her - and only her - he was reduced to nothing. He loved her, his feelings brimming inside him.
Any more and he was sure that he would come apart at the seams.
“Carlos,” Her voice whispered.
He cracked his eyes open, and she was there, leaning over to peer down at him. Her hair fell from her shoulders, so close that he could smell her shampoo. It was the same one she’d used since they were 6 - one her mother made. The scent was her and her alone.
Carlos swallowed.
She lowered herself closer. Carlos was sure his heart was so loud that she could hear it, surely she could. She smiled down at him, cocking her head to the side.
“What are you thinking?”
He just shook his head, afraid to trust his voice.
“Then?”
“‘Then’ what?”
“Why won’t you look at me?” A pout made its way on her face, jutting her lower lip out dramatically.
He chuckled, trying to rein in his heart. But it was so difficult, her beautiful eyes looking down at him, the lines of her lips and nose and cheeks. He had memorized it all. He would know her no matter what, from the way she laughed, to the way she spoke, to the way she just breathed.
Carlos loved her so much it hurt.
‘I can’t,’ He didn’t say, ‘I love you too much.’
She didn’t say anything. Just smiling down at him. Carlos thought that just for a moment if even for a moment, something shifted in her eyes. A foreign look floats in them, dancing in the color and making them shine.
It was odd.
He wanted to know what that was, the smallest change. Silence pulled over them.
The sun shined through the parts in her hair, falling onto his skin, a gentle stroke of warmth. The breeze carried the scent of the roses, and the grass below them swayed. Around them, the world seemed to slow. It was like the only person he could see was her.
The only person that she could see was him.
Lost somewhere in time, just two hearts dancing away in the summer. Nothing else would matter, just them, just at this moment.
Carlos lost himself.
He leaned up, closing the space between them, and kissed her.
The softest thing, a barely there press of their lips.
He hadn’t even realized he’d done it, pulling himself away as soon as he did.
Neither of them said a thing. Just staring at the other with wide eyes. A pink blush dusted her cheeks, and that look in her eyes changed again. She drew in a sharp breath, and Carlos was sure he’d ruined everything.
It was destroyed because of him.
But he couldn’t even mutter out an apology. There was nothing to say, nothing to do. She moved away, rolling back to sit on the grass. Carlos felt like crying, bringing a forearm to cover his face.
What an idiot.
He felt the regret sit against his chest, so heavy he could hardly breathe. Why did he have to lose control of himself? They were supposed to be friends, but all he was doing was making it complicated. He was in love with her, she loved him - it was supposed to be enough.
Carlos let out a deep sigh. He could hear the grass shifting beside him, he spared a look over and she was still there. She sat with her knees pulled up to her chest, tucking her chin on them, arms wrapped around her legs.
When he opened his mouth to speak, she beat him to it, “I - I guess…I mean, I guess it would be lame if you went to Red Bull without having your first kiss, huh?
He shot up, “That’s - that’s not what this was! I - I’m sorry!”
She turned to face him, her face still bright red, but with a shy smile, “It’s ok.”
He hadn’t realized that he reached for her hand, and she squeezed, “I didn’t mind. If I’m going to have my first kiss, at least it’s you.”
Carlos could only stare at her, mouth hanging open.
This wasn’t what he thought.
“Are you sure?”
She leaned against her knees, “Yeah. Isn’t that what friends are for?”
The word struck him deeper than it had any right to. But he couldn’t help the relief that flooded through him, “Yeah…yeah…of course.”
“It would be lame if I was the only F4 driver without a kiss.”
“Super lame.”
“Hey!”
She burst into laughter. Her laugh filled the garden and he was soon to join, throwing his head back. This was easy. Being like this with her was easy.
“That means you would’ve been lame too.”
“Not as lame as you.”
“I’m super cool.”
“No, Carlos, you’re not.”
They never spoke of it again.
__________
Carlos nearly has a heart attack when his phone buzzes in his pocket. But, upon further inspection, it’s only Blanca.
‘I talked to Mom,’ Her text says, ‘She told me what happened.’
He just stares at it. Pocketing his phone, he’ll answer it later. Too many texts have been sent to him today. Carlos contemplates running over his phone. Maybe that’ll shut everyone up.
His pocket buzzes again. And again. And again.
With a groan he pulls it back out, scrolling through the messages.
‘Answer me.’
‘CARLOS.’
‘Ok,’ Is all he sends back, ready to tuck it away once more, but there’s another text that pops up.
‘Are you ok?’
For a moment, Carlos thinks about telling her. Though he never said a word about his feelings Blanca had this way of knowing. She called it a ‘sister thing’. Carlos just thought she was nosey.
‘Yes,’ he sends, following it with, ‘Why wouldn’t I be?’
The text bubbles appear and disappear, it’s not very fair. He knows. But there’s too much happening and he can’t - he just can’t. Tomorrow he will apologize, but today, he just needs a break.
In one of her ‘sister thing’ moments, she only ends up sending.
‘OK, I’m here if you need anything. I love you.’
Carlos can feel the lump in his throat and struggles to swallow it.
‘I love you too.’
__________
She called him sobbing.
It was nearly midnight, Carlos had just gotten back from a race. He’d fallen onto his bed, sighing into the night air, when the rang. He thought about letting it go, the rings growing louder in the silence of his room.
Against himself, he reached over and answered.
As soon as he did, he could hear her heaving breaths, the sound of her hiccuping cries. He shot up and pulled the phone closer.
“What happened? What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
There was no answer, just another broken sob. The slick sound of her sniffling, wet breath.
“Please,” He whispered, already standing, “Please tell me what’s wrong. Carino, please.”
“W-Will you come o-over?” She managed.
He did. Shoved his feet into his shoes, pulled a shirt over his head, and stormed right out the door. It never crossed his mind to take a car - he just ran. Pushing his way through the gate and rounding the corner into the street. He could hardly see a thing, the moon clouded and fuzzy.
But he ran to her.
He was there faster than ever, crawling over the small fence to get to her backyard. The garden stood tall, and the roses nicked his ankle. But all he could think about was the light coming from the upstairs bedroom, a shadowy figure pacing across the curtains.
He had half a mind to scream for her, but she peered through the curtains and he could see the relief spread across her face. The sight of her made his stomach drop, he nearly tripped over himself to climb the ledge. It was a path he’d taken countless times, jumping to grip the railing and hoisting himself up. As a kid, he used to need her help, but they weren’t kids anymore.
And Carlos is sure he would’ve found a way. Nothing could’ve stopped him from reaching her.
Dropping himself onto the wooden floor, he breathed her name, but she was already pushing herself into his arms. He felt her trembling against him, wet facing pressed into his shirt. He couldn’t have cared less. Wrapping his arms around her, he brought her closer. Claros dropped his head to whisper into her ear.
“I’m here…shh…I’m right here.”
Where her arms were locked around him, she fisted at his shirt, the fabric bunched between her fingers. Her grip was so tight he worried it might rip, but how could he ever worry about that? She pulled away from him, just enough to look him in the eye. Her face was blotchy, cheeks wet with tears, eyes red-rimmed.
But Carlos still thought she was beautiful.
The heartbreak on her face made something crack within him.
“W- What’s wrong? Please, tell-”
“My dad,” She gasped, sucking in a large fit of air, “It - it’s my dad…he’s dying, Carlos…”
The world seemed to go still. Her words hadn’t seemed real, and Carlos half expected her brothers to jump from the dark hallway and laugh. It wasn’t possible. Things like this weren’t supposed to happen to them. Things like this - losing people, losing friends, and family - happened to everyone else.
But not them.
It seemed that the world had finally come caving in on their little bubble. It was shattering around him and all Carlos wanted to do was stop it. Carlos felt so cold, that he hadn’t even realized that he began to cry too. Silent tears rolled down his face before he could stop them.
The pain was unbearable.
But they held each other. There, on her porch, they stood crying. Falling apart and having the other to lean on. Carlos clung to her, afraid that the world would try to take her too. That it would get greedy.
‘I’m sorry,’ He wanted to say, but he couldn’t. The words lost to him, stuck in his throat.
He prayed that she would know. That she would know his feelings, the way he needed her. The way he loved her.
“Stay,” She whispered to him, her words almost swallowed by her cries, “Please.”
‘I need you.’ Went unsaid, but Carlos heard it anyway.
 “Always.”
‘I love you.’
__________
“Everything alright, mate?” Charles’ voice pulled him back to himself
Carlos shakes his head, blinking a few times, eyes stinging, “Yeah..fine. Sorry.”
He looks up, Silvia glaring down at him. The P.R. briefing was never anything he truly listened to, but perhaps his disinterest had gotten far too obvious.
“As I was saying,” She rolled her eyes, flipping the papers in her hand.
Her words fell past him again, something about interviews and language. He could feel Charles’ eyes still on him. He was far too kind for his own good, sometimes that meant trying to understand things that he had no business knowing.
The meeting rolled on, and when they were dismissed, Carlos tried to slip away, but he was stopped by a hand on his shoulder.
“Hey!” Charles hooked his arm around Carlos, “Everything alright?”
“Of course,” He tried to sell it with a smile.
Charles didn’t believe him, green eyes boring into his own. When Carlos looked away, Charles was quick to bid those around them goodbye and steer them to an empty conference room.
Damn, empath.
“What is it?” Charles said, shutting the door behind him.
Secrets had never been Carlos’ strong suit. He threw himself onto a chair, bringing his hands up to his face. He hadn’t spoken to anyone about the message and was unsure how to start. He was lost in the sea of his emotions, torn between his sadness and anger.
He felt like an idiot.
“Carlos?”
Charles sits across from him, concern written across his face. Carlos takes a deep breath, he steadies himself on his knees, resting his elbows on his legs.
“There was this girl - we were friends when we were little,” Charles nods along, letting Carlos speak, “And earlier today, she texted me to tell me that she was getting married.”
“OK?”
Carlos looks over at Charles. He’s unsure of the face that he makes, but it seems to be enough for him to understand. His face falls and he puts his hands over his heart.
“Mate, I - I’m so sorry.”
Carlos waves him away. This isn’t his fault, and yet, it’s just like Charles to act as if it is, “I will be fine.”
Charles is silent for a while, looking down at his hands. He’s fiddling with the rings on his fingers, eyes darting around the room. Carlos has known him for far too long, he could practically see the cogs turning.
“What?”
Charles doesn’t answer right away, but when he does, there’s a look in his eye, “Do you still love her?”
Carlos takes a deep breath. There is only one answer, there has only ever been one answer.
“Yes.”
__________
Her father died 4 months later.
And she was gone two months later.
Her mother couldn't take the pain of being alone in the house her husband built, so she left. All things packed, the house empty, they were gone.
Carlos couldn’t even say bye. His negotiations with Red Bull ran longer than they were supposed to, when he threatened to walk out his father nearly smacked him.
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime!”
“She’s my best friend - I love her!”
“There will be other girls, she is not the only -”
“Yes,” He nearly screeched, “She is! She is the only one!”
His father just stared at him, sharp eyes squinting. He would never understand and Carlos didn’t have the strength to make him. He called her instead.
She picked up on the second ring. Neither one of them said a thing, but Carlos could feel her disappointment. It was his own.
Eventually, he can bring himself to utter her name, trying to find the apology, but she beats him to it.
“I’m going to miss you,” She says.
Carlos nearly cries. They’ve been apart, his racing often keeping them away from one another for months on end, but she has always been at him, waiting for him.
“I wish you could stay.”
He was being selfish - he knows - but the fear of her leaving, going far away. Carlos thought he was dying. His chest was tight, breathing shallow. His mind was racing, trying to think of something to make her stay - anything.
“I do too,” He could hear the faintest hint of a smile in her voice, “But I can’t.”
“I could…” He began.
But there was nothing. There was nothing that he could’ve done. The decision was one that was far beyond both of them. Spain held so much sadness for her, and it would be wrong for Carlos to ever want to have kept her there. It wouldn’t have been right.
Silence ballooned between them once more. They were just there, breathing with one another. There was so much Carlos wanted to say, so much he needed to say. His love felt like it was bursting from his chest, trying to force its way out. Carlos choked it back.
This wasn’t the time. It wasn’t the right moment to -
“I love you, Carlos.”
The words hit him and he nearly collapsed. He could imagine her face, hand curled tight around her phone, beautiful face red. His heart was pounding, blood rushing.
All these years, all this time. He loved her in silence, but to know that she loved him. It made him feel like he was floating.
“I -”
“Carlos!”
His father was standing right before him, eyebrows drawn tight together, “They are waiting!”
“I’m going, I just have to-”
“You should go, Carlos,” He heard, her voice thin. She was crying, he knew she was, “They’re waiting for you.”
“NO!” He demanded. This wasn’t how he’d say goodbye, he wanted to tell her.
“Please, I just need to say something.”
Again, his father just stared at him. But there was something different, his eyes were softer. Carlos thought if even for a moment, he saw understanding. With a click of his tongue, his father turned away, “Five minutes.”
He breathed a sigh of relief.
He took a deep breath, “I - I need you to know-”
“I already do know,” There was a slight laugh to her words, just the smallest thing. Before Carlos could say anything else, she kept going, “Go show them who you are, Carlos.”
“But I need to tell you that I -”
“I love you too,” Was all he heard before the dial tone.
She was gone. Just like that.
__________
Though Charles offers to take him out to treat his sorrows, Carlos declines. He watches as Charles’ smile falters, but he still pats Carlos on the shoulder.
“Of course,” He says, turning to fish his keys from his pocket, “But if you change your mind, let me know. Okay?”
Carlos nods. He waves Charles away. When he’s alone in his hotel room, he collapses onto his bed. He slips his phone from his pocket. It opens and he’s face-to-face with her message.
Carlos wanted to be angry.
After years, this was the first thing she said.
He could say something, call her. It wouldn’t be right, he can’t be the reason that she breaks someone’s heart. He can't be the reason that someone else has to live without her. What a terrible existence that is.
It just makes no sense, to think that after all these years, she invites him to her wedding. Carlos always thought that once they made their way back to each other, they would marry. In all his dreams, she was his wife. To love her forever would make the distance worth it.
She told him that day. She said that she loved him, Carlos couldn’t help but think that maybe she was just being nice, just telling him what he wanted to hear on the most important day of his life. Thinking that maybe he had taken it wrong.
“Love you.”
But she would never love him the way he loved her. Completely. From the first day he met her, bumping heads in class, to the day he lost her. He has always loved her. He can see her still, smiling and bright - like the stars. He can feel the summer breeze, the smell of their childhood. He can see the rosebuds right before they bloom, waiting with her as the rain comes and they get sick. He remembers going to all her Flamenco performances - acting like he really cared about dances and not just seeing her face light up when she saw him.
There is no part of his life that he can look back on and not see her. She is everywhere. And Carlos knows that she always will be.
‘Text me back if you can.’
He couldn't bring himself to say no but knew he’d die if he had to see her marry someone else. It would break her heart, he’s sure of it. He can almost picture the disappointment on her face. Carlos wishes he could be stronger, to just put on a brave front, but he can’t. He’s only human.
He’s just a man hopelessly in love with a woman he can’t have.
What a pitiful thing to be.
Carlos looks down at his phone.
The words are searing. If he saw her, what would he even say? Would he be able to hold himself back? Keep himself from spilling his feelings?
The answer is simple.
He won’t.
There is something small inside of Carlos’ mind that feels giddy, she still thinks of him. He was still important to her, she wanted him. She cared about him. She missed him. Maybe she still loved him. Maybe he could -
He shakes the thoughts from his head. No. That was a lifetime ago, those feelings were alive when they were 16. Not now.
There’s only one question he thinks back to.
Why?
After all these years of silence, why now? Why this?
They were kids back then, but Carlos likes to think that even what they felt then wasn’t nothing. That’s the very problem. Nothing was the same. They weren’t the same, the world around them wasn’t the same - even if Carlos so desperately wished it was.
The screen begins to fade, but he taps it. It lights up once more, illuminating in the darkness of the hotel room.
She’s getting married and she wants him to come.
She’s happy and in love. She’s moved on. Carlos thinks of her smile again. A crushing sense of finality passes over him. He hopes that whoever it is makes her smile, and makes her laugh. He hopes that they hold her when she cries, and catch her when she falls.
He hopes that one day he’ll be able to look back on her without so much pain.
Why?
That question refuses to die, still floating around in his mind even as he tries to shake it away.
He’ll never know why, but maybe it’s better that way. To keep her as who she is in his memory, to keep them as they were. Young and beautiful. That’s all.
Her message will sit unanswered. He can’t. He won’t.
Carlos whispers an apology, he hopes that it might reach her. That she’ll catch the drift of his words in the wind, maybe even forgive him. He lets himself think of her, wondering what she’ll wear, what her hair will look like.
Beautiful.
He’s sure.
He just won’t be there to see it.

LGBTQ Manga Review - Sirius: Twin Stars
A Bright Star of Yuri with Meaningful Symbolism and Incredible, Dramatic Characters
Tumblr media
Sirius: Twin Stars is the second manga from Spanish Yuri artist Ana C. Sánchez. As with Alter Ego, her previous work, Tokyopop publishes it in English under its LOVE x LOVE and International Women of Manga line. Similarly to Alter Ego, this oneshot tells a dramatic, if somewhat contrived, romance between two young women with surprising depth and artistic merit. And yet, as long as we are compare the two, I find I enjoy Sirius far more than its predecessor. The manga improves on Alter Ego in almost every way, from the characters and their connection to its pacing and artwork. And considering that Alter Ego is not by any means a low-quality manga, I awarded it a six out of ten, after all, the comparison further cements Sirius’ quality.
Sirius begins as Dani, a teenage or very young adult tennis prodigy and daughter of a former champion, is relocated to her family’s villa by the sea to recover after an as-of-yet unspecified tragedy. As they drive along the shore, Dani catches sight of a beautiful and bright woman carrying a telescope, Blanca.
Tumblr media
These opening panels are some of the best in the manga, establishing Dani’s early determination and drive to become a tennis legend like her mother, the collapse of that “unattainable childhood ideal,” and the surly cynicism that has overtaken the once exuberant girl. Her gaze, narrowed and turned downward, is contrasted wonderfully by Blanca’s joyful and open observance of the beach and beautiful blue sky. Although they have yet to meet, the dynamic between the two main characters and the inevitable struggle between their optimistic and shattered worldview is immediately apparent, setting the stage for their relationship.
A few pages of this introduction depict a surreal and imaginative scene drenched in symbolism, its meaning becoming clearer throughout the story. As a figure of Dani walks a narrow, crocked yet direct path towards her goal, a distant conflux of light that dominates her focus, the road behind her starts to crumble, signifying both the degrading relationship she and her mother and coach had throughout her career and Dani’s loss of innocence and passion that occurred before events of the story. As the figure looks back and realizes the path behind her is crumbling, the way forward similarly decays, leaving her isolated, suspended over a pit of “monsters.” The figure stands there with no way forward toward her lost dream, no route of return to the idyllic days before she lost her luster and her relationship with her mother, and no escape from the lonely solitude, a lone trapped figure.
Tumblr media
The full story of what happened with Dani is revealed slowly throughout the manga. Through visuals, dialogue, and narration Sánchez allude to the full story of Dani’s fall from grace in the tennis world and the falling out she had with her mother before the manga’s start. Early moments like Dani’s panic attack at seeing her old tennis racket plant pieces of the larger story, hinting at the truth.
These seeds help readers develop a picture and narrative of these events, which gradually expand thanks to later sequences like a nightmare from Dani and more grounded and reliable flashbacks. By the time Dani reveals her entire, unedited backstory, many aspects of which I have danced around, as readers really should experience it for themselves, it feels like a satisfying confirmation, verifying the chronology we have primarily constructed ourselves and slotting it into its greater context in the story and Dani’s psyche. It is a wonderfully paced and enthralling story that makes excellent use of the relatively oneshot’s limited page counts and actively involves readers in Dani’s journey and recovery. While the romance plot is as evident as any Yuri story, the personal, character-driven plot forges a strong connection with its subject, creating a hunger for answers and resolution that quickly engages readers.
Tumblr media
The other subject of Sirius, Blanca, is a foil to Dani. Her natural charm and brightness make her the perfect subject to counteract Dani’s sullen and traumatized demeanor. She is an enthusiastic stargazer, and her unrelenting devotion to it mirrors Dani’s former tennis goals. As the story progresses and the two girls develop an unlikely relationship and romance,
Blanca’s fiery fascination with astronomy affects Dani deeply. The broken young woman becomes enchanted by her friend’s motivation. She slowly starts to open up to these feelings of excitement again and starts having romantic feelings for Blanca, the star who can save her and repair the broken pieces of her dream.
Tumblr media
However, Blanca starts to experience doubt and guilt caused by her confused feelings for Dani. Upon discovering the truth of Dani’s past, Blanca believes herself culpable for the former’s pain, regretting sharing her aspiration so enthusiastically with the girl who had lost hers. It leads to her withdrawing from Dani and lashing out against her sister.
Although the latter developments feel somewhat less earned, as Blanca’s fight with her sister feels sudden, forced into the story only to poorly reflect Dani and her mother, her guilt is much more understandable. The rift it creates between her and Dani effectively moves the story along and is one of the first of many parts of Dani that begin to heal, as it leads to a confrontation between the two of them in which Blanca can refute Dani’s view of herself and promises to accompany her as she recovers the “light” she lost.
Tumblr media
The relationship between Blanca and Dani is incredibly impactful. Sánchez does a stunning job displaying and justifying both girls’ personalities, and it sells their eventual romance and Dani’s journey of growth and healing. These two aspects of the manga are so intertwined that it feels impossible to separate them. Neither the Yuri nor character aspects work without the other.
Tumblr media
Although Sirius is forthright with its characters and stories, it allows for plenty of analysis and contemplation thanks to its reliance on symbolism. Several motifs appear throughout, such as Dani’s phone, symbolizing the potential for mending her psychological wounds, and the sky, which stands for the characters’ passion.
Chief among these symbols is the titular Sirius, two stars linked together by gravity. The manga frequently and blatantly references the binary star in relation to the manga’s main characters. Sirius is easily the least subtle of the symbols, as the girls openly reference each other’s “light” and refer to each other as stars pulled together. However, the presence and prominence of the stars and other symbols help lend further gravity (pardon the pun) to the story's events. The allusion to fated lovers as shining light help legitimize the heightened emotions depicted that would otherwise come off as melodramatic and lend it a more complex, artistic status. It is this very factor that spurred my analysis in the form of this review.
Sirius’s artwork furthers the many excellent aspects of its story. As with the earlier described scene from the introduction, several moments of more stylized and imaginative imagery exist throughout the manga. While none rise to the level of those initial pages, they assist in communicating the character’s dramatic and overwhelming emotions in crucial segments.
Tumblr media
Sánchez also employs incredible utilization of contrast in everything from the individual stages to the character designs. Dani has black hair that reflects her inner darkness and is often drawn in shadow, while Blanca is the opposite, incorporating brighter tones and often a sparkling, shining aurora of brightness around her, which helps to illuminate and spread to Dani as she is captivated by Blanca.
Some of the manga’s best scenes incorporate this use of brightness, such as a pivotal discussion between the girls during which they move from shadowed darkness into blinding light that washes out the girls and the scenery around them. It is also effectively employed in Sánchez’s illustrations of the sky, both in the day’s rippling circlets of sunshine and the night’s illustrious blanket of stars.
Tumblr media
On the note of character designs, I criticized Alter Ego for making its characters, who are in their early-to-mid twenties, look like teenagers. However, Sánchez’s style is more suited to its teenage subjects in Sirius. And the illustrations depicting adults, including a time skip epilogue at the manga’s conclusion, are much more appropriately proportioned and constructed than in her previous work.
Lastly, I have to praise the manga’s colored illustrations. Sánchez got her start in the traditionally full-color webcomic space, and her proficiency shows. Although Sirius is, like most manga, illustrated mainly in black and white, and as previously mentioned, masterfully employs tone and contrasting shades, the colorful introduction and cover art are astounding. I wish this entire story was rendered similarly; it is just that good.
Despite my love for Sirius' story, characters, and presentation, a few faults stuck out to me. First, a few events feel forced or confounded, particularly in the early story. For example, when Dani first meets Blanca face-to-face, she appears drunk and aggressive. While their fight here, which ends with Dani collapsing and Blanca revealing her authentic tender and concerned nature, progresses naturally to later developments between the two, it feels unnecessary. It results in our first impression of Blanca being wholly negative.
Tumblr media
I am inclined to believe the story acknowledges this fault, as it has to scramble to justify and undo this initial encounter, later revealing that Blanca’s “friends” spiked her drink. But, this does little to contribute to Blanca’s character and ensures that the short oneshot has to waste time undoing these actions.
Furthermore, although the romance and Dani’s growth evolve naturally and profoundly, there is little change in Blanca’s character. Although her battle with guilt over Dani is well written, it does not change her character in the long term, and the sudden argument with her sister feels like a last-ditch effort to add stakes to her character via strained logic and events.
If the author had leaned into some aspects of Blanca’s character a little more, her story would feel complete. She establishes that she and her sister are darting between different towns each week of their Summer. This fact provides excellent ground to have her express a reluctance to attachment, a preference for keeping her head among the stars rather than forging lasting bounds to others on Earth, until she meets Dani, of course. The scene with Blanca and her “friends” could even have been twisted to support this, as she barely knows them, and if one of them had injured Dani instead of her, the guilt and shock she feels could lend credence to her caution of others.
Furthermore, a side fling between Blanca’s sister and Dani’s cousin and guardian, Alex, adds exceptionally little to the story. Their presence is little more than an unnecessary distraction. Apart from one of the scattered interactions between Dani and Alex, in which he gives her some love advice, neither character contributes much to the manga.
Lastly, although the lettering is overall fantastic, especially for sound effects, there were several occasions where “multi-bubbles” employed for speech and narrations were separated and vertically misaligned in such a way that it interrupted the flow of reading. I often had to consider what I should read first, thrusting me out of the story.
Tumblr media
irius is a beautiful and complex romance. Despite an often obvious storyline and a few too many coincidences, it shines as a bright and dramatic account of love and healing. The more I reread and contemplated the shining manga, the more there was to enjoy and analyze. While I could easily keep this review going for twice its already excessive length as I lovingly examine its many details and gush over its excellent artwork, I want to ensure that readers have something left to discover for themselves when they go read this book, which I highly encourage them to do. So please do yourself a favor and let gravity pull you towards this bright star of Yuri.

Suddenly, Letters from Watson dumps us in the middle of the Great American Desert (part 1 of "On the Great Alkali Plain," 2/7/24). This is not anywhere I expected to be transported from London, and the contrast makes the Mountain West feel exotic for a minute.
The Great American Desert -- stretching from about Grand Island, Nebraska to the Sierras and pretty much the entire north-south length of the U.S. -- had become a thing of legend since explorers' accounts in the 1820s. When Dad and I drove across it in 2022, we talked about how incredibly daunting it must have been for emigrants seeking their land of milk and honey on the Pacific coast.
The way we went, out I-80, Nebraska shifts from green to gray as it rises toward the Rockies. After a while, the wind picks up as you go uphill into Wyoming. There's a lot of Wyoming, and after Cheyenne and Laramie (both of which would be small towns in most states), it's very, very empty. When we finally started the descent toward Salt Lake City, and the little valleys beside the road turned green with running water, it was truly like entering paradise.
Of course, in 1847, Salt Lake City was just barely being settled, as Brigham Young led his Latter Day Saints west from Council Bluffs, and its location wasn't part of the U.S. yet.
The Mexican-American war had started the prior year, 1846, and was still going. Spring-summer of 1846 saw the Bear Flag Revolt in California, followed by the U.S. just annexing the state. Gold wouldn't be discovered at Sutter's Mill until 1849, so while emigration to California happened -- the Donner Party made their ill-fated trip in 1846-47 -- it wasn't anything like the scope of movement along the Oregon Trail.
As far as I can tell, "Sierra Blanco" is not a real place. There's a Sierra Blanca in New Mexico -- which would fit with all the specific landscape, plus White Sands National Park in New Mexico specifically has alkali flats. Last time I drove through New Mexico on I-40, in late 2018, it was delightfully desolate, so I can buy that in 1847, it seemed completely empty, with even the native peoples avoiding some stretches.
Why anyone would be crossing New Mexico is a mystery, since neither Arizona nor southern California were much settled by Americans. There was some sort of wagon route across New Mexico used by U.S. soldiers during the Mexican-American War, so if I'd expect anyone to be about, it'd be the U.S. Army.
Utah, now, is downright famous for its salt flat, but that's west of the site of Salt Lake City.
Regardless, parties screwing up their trip to the west by taking an imprudent shortcut or mistaking the route was definitely both a thing that happened and, thanks to the Donner Party, a trope. Our haggard and starving traveler sounds about right.
Then he reveals a Plucky Innocent Victorian Child.
That "pretty little girl of about five years of age" is the absolute ideal of Victorian childhood, being perfectly behaved, utterly imperturbable, determined to see the best in all things, sweet, trusting, and looking forward to being reunited with her mother in heaven.
This kind of child is why Louisa May Alcott was seen as innovative for writing Little Woman about girls who worked on their character flaws. (This is also the ideal the March girls were being aimed at. Polly in An Old-Fashioned Girl comes closer, but even Polly would have been upset about being hopelessly lost in the desert with no water.) Contrast this with the street urchins that Holmes employs in his investigation, who are good enough sorts but scrappy, resourceful, and street smart.
Ordinarily, a Victorian child who was utterly sweet and pious would be a cinnamon roll, literally too good, too pure for this world, and thus would die beautifully but tragically before long. Being lost in the desert seems ideal for this, but --
She turns to prayer, and since someone must survive in order for this scene to be relevant,
Yes, darn it, I am on the edge of my seat to know what happens. I'm also grateful that crossing the Great American Desert in 2022 was a quicker process. I've been reading Carey Williams' old-but-interesting California: The Great Exception, which has a lot to say about how 19th century isolation shaped California's economy and power structure, not always for good. But that's neither here nor there -- I don't think we're headed to California.

DRIVE TO SURVIVE S.5 EP. 10
END OF THE ROAD
“So, What are your plans after Abu Dhabi?”
“I have a few things in mind, I’m officially unemployed. What are you gonna do without me?”
“Not much, for now we hired Charlotte as class clown, she’s is pretty funny. The other day she talked a lot about you”
“What did she say? Hope she didn’t reveal any secrets” Daniel showed a smile
“She looked sad, you know why?”
“Yeah. She’s the type of talent you saw on the track and your mind already click on what’s coming next, like, the next big thing. I told her that the events that happened on McLaren aren’t gonna affect our friendship”
“So, you’re good with the decision?”
“This is a sport that If they’re not happy with you, you’re out, you just have to remember the good days, enjoy the butterflies. I told her that she’s so powerfull, to surround to people who cares about her and then continue with their feet on the ground and let go the idea that you have to be the best or do the most to be worth something”
“You’re a good friend and we’re gonna miss you. What’s the next thing for you?”
“I don’t know. I guess we have to wait ‘till next season”
Tumblr media
“Hello Charlotte”
“Hello Netflix, what’s up?”
“Good, how’s the media treating you?” I moved my head as saying no
“Like always, I haven’t been near my phone the past week, so Lando has to knock everyday at 5 am to wake me up”
“That’s a hard job” I laugh
“It’s discipline, I force him to go to the gym with me. Just to start the day with energy”
“Ready for the last race? This has been a incredible season, better that Hamilton’s”
“I don’t like to compare but yeah, the expectations has been high, for everybody, I also have a lot of responsability with me, Alex too. The team has helped us in a way that we feel in another level, even If we’re not longer be together, I’m gratefull and I hope to race aginst them next year. I mean, there was always a 50/50 situation and a lot of rumours and criticism but I just focused on what I wanted rather that follow people bad advices”
“Who gave you a bad advice?
“Daniel, he just told me to tell them F.E.A.”
“What’s that?”
“Fuck them all”
“Inspiring” I laugh “And who gave you a good advice?”
I started thinking “Probably Carlos, he’s been helping me a lot, he just said don’t crash, pretty good advice”
Tumblr media
“Hey, just wanted to wish you good luck”
“You too” I kissed Lando on the cheek
“I don’t like it there” I laugh and hug him
“Carlos is looking in our direction and his mom just took a photo”
He laughs “Family dinners are going to be fun with me in there”
“Funny, go get ready, love you”
“Love you too, my world champ”
“Let’s see” I looked around and the Sainz and my dad we’re smiling “Weirdos”
My get closer to my dad and hug “You’re mom is so proud of you, I know you’re going to be world champion, zero doubts, mind focus and have fun. Even if this is your job, remember those days when everybody just said that a girl, my little baby, can’t do it and now you’re proving them wrong, you always do that. We’re so proud”
“I love you dad. Mom’s still here” I said with tear on my eyes
“She is” I gasp “Carlos, let’s go. See you after the race”
“Good luck, my favourite sister” I formed an “O”
“Ana and Blanca are gonna get so jealous, haha. See you on the podium or at the party”
“A little party sounds good” He laugh and I walked to my garage. All of the members looked happy, I took my balaclava and helmet and walked to the circuit to get in the car.
God, if this is my moment, please make it a good one.
Tumblr media
“Radio check”
“Copy, ugh, I’m going to miss your voice”
“I already have the file of your radio in your inbox”
“You’re definitely the best race engineer in the world”
“Doing my best for you. Six minutes to formation lap”
“Copy, I remember that you’re going to McLaren with me, ups”
“Haha, nothing like a chaotic driver ‘till you decide to retire”
“Welcome to the last race of the season, here in Abu Dhabi. The story is repeating itself. Max Verstappen is going to be fighting for this year title with Charlotte Robyn-Jone, today as a Williams race driver and tomorrow she’ll be officially part of McLaren. There’s a lot going on in both garages. Red Bull has set up everything to a back to back and Williams has done the same for the girl. She’ll be the greatest, first woman to get through all the categories and win, hope that she do the same today and mark history”
Everybody is ready in their positions after the formation lap.
Five seconds to breath
Four seconds to be gratefull
Three seconds to blink
Two seconds to feel a champion
One second to be one
Tumblr media
“And it all comes down to the last lap and no, Verstappen has braked and Charlotte has passed the Dutchman with ease and what a girl, she is three more corners away from being the first, mark history AND SHE HAS DONE IT, SHE DID IT. We have the first woman world champion in formula one. Remember her name, Charlotte Robyn-Jones is a world champion. Oh my God, I’m so happy”
“YEAAAAAAAAH, WE DID IT”
“YOU DID IT. What a race. We are so proud, Your mom is happy for you. This has been your year, champ” Everybody can hear the screaming coming from the Williams garage
“Thank you to all the members of Williams, I’m so happy. I hope we have a party tonight ‘cause everybody is invited. Call Kimi, Adam”
“I don’t have his phone number and...”
“But I do, look for my phone. Oh my God, freacking champion. YEAAAAH”
Charlotte parked in front of  the P1, Max on P2 and Lando on P3. Due her excitement, she took off her helmet and balaclava faster than ever and run to Lando
“You did it. I’m so proud”
“So proud to deserve a kiss”
“As many as my girl want” And that kissed marked one of the most shared photos of the new crowned champion.
Little thing nobody knows. Happiness never last long.

What other ideas did you also have for the Hollow Knight Modern AU?
I have… a lot. (For context: I originally posted about my Hollow Knight Modern AU here). I tried to type some things out and then tumblr erased it, so instead you get my unorganized ramblings that I have on my notes app. (Under the cut so not everyone has to read them). Essentially, Pale Royal (the Pale King) is the mayor of the oddball town of Hallownest and the somewhat negligent father of five chaotic children.
Character names:
Pale Royal (= The Pale King)
Blanca Royal (White Lady)
Hollis Royal (The Hollow Knight/Pure Vessel)
Kinsey Royal (Broken Vessel/Lost Kin)
Hornet Weaver (Hornet- her mom insisted she should have the Weaver name)
Herrah Weaver (Herrah the Beast)
Greene Royal (Greenpath vessel)
Knight "Ghost" Royal (The Knight/Ghost/player character)
Grimm Nightmare Sr. (Troupe Master/Nightmare King Grimm)
Grimm Nightmare Jr. (Grimmchild)
Dr. Sophia Monomon (Monomon the Teacher, I chose the name Sophia because it means wisdom or knowledge)
Quirrel Monomon (Quirrel, Monomon's adopted son)
Morningstar Claw (Mantis Lord)
Lance Claw (Mantis Lord)
Arrow Claw (Mantis Lord)
Mace Claw (Traitor Lord)
Bretta Scriber (Bretta)
Tiso Shieldsmith (Tiso)
Sybil Erebis (Seer)
Pale and Blanca have an open relationship - Blanca and Herrah get along fine and Pale having a child with Herrah wasn’t a problem for Blanca. Blanca is also bisexual and in a relationship with Dryya, the Hallownest Chief of Police.
Tween Hornet: What are you talking about I have no interest in girly things I like ninjas and swords! *hides princess book under the bed*
Ghost: second grade Force of Chaos
Grimmchild/Grimm Jr.: Second grade arsonist and Ghost's best friend/accomplice
Pale King and White Lady: parenting is easy! Just let the kids figure it out for themselves!
Teenage/Young adult Hollow Knight: the only responsible person in the household. Is slowly going insane taking care of four younger siblings.
Troupe Master Grimm/Grimm Sr.: Similar parenting philosophy to PK and WL. Is *fabulous* Actively encourages his son to be a ball of chaos.
Herrah: Like a crazy cat lady but with spiders. Her home is not a place for the faint of heart.
Teenage Mantis Lords: Sisters Morningstar, Lance, and Arrow. Leaders of the student-run Fencing Club which is really just a veneer for a bunch of kids who want to be TOUGH WARRIORS! Members include Hornet and Cloth.
Traitor Lord: Mantis sisters’ older brother Mace. A deadbeat high school dropout who makes a living as a drug dealer. The family doesn't talk about him.
Lance: "Yes I'm a girl and anyone else who'd like to comment gets STABBED!"
People know better than to mess with these kids.
When Grimm gets a call from the school: "Oh? My son set a fire in the boys' bathroom, you say? Did he tell you why? Because toilet paper is very flammable, he said? Oh well, kids will be kids, it sounds very much like something I would have done at his age... Suspended? Surely that's a little harsh? With all due respect, I think this behavior is teaching him important life skills! Surely that should be more acceptable in a school?"
I'm imagining Grimm Jr. asking Ghost to run away and join the circus with him 😆😆😆
"You'd be a great act, Ghost! I'm sure my dad wouldn't mind having another kid! You could be an acrobat or a clown or a mime... (at this point Ghost gives him a look).... okay, maybe not a mime."
The town of Hallownest is technically their "hometown," but the Nightmares travel. Grimm Sr. just drops his kid off at the local public school whenever he's too busy to take care of him, never mind whether or not he's actually enrolled. Cue a lot of teachers trying to figure out where the hell this kid came from. How much the kid is actually learning, missing school so often and being dropped in random classes is... questionable, but everything is fine! The Hallownest school system has already given up. Grimm Jr. really only goes to school because Dad is too busy to deal with him full time 😆
He's doing his best to just push his kid off on a stranger like in-game 😆
Ghost also often begs for Grimm to come sleep over, which of course causes more chaos than usual in the Royal household. Poor Hollis, trying to maintain some semblance of order.
Bretta is already writing fanfic. Ghost once saves her from a bully by dropping onto him from a tree, at which point Bretta decides she’s in love. Then Bretta mentions this to Greene. Bretta: “Oh, is he your brother? He’s so hot! 😍😍” Greene: “… sibling. And they’re seven.” Bretta: “Oh… so that’s why he’s… they’re… so short….” *is mortified*
Bretta later develops a crush on Hollis and writes fan fiction about them.
Grimm just drops off his kid at the Royal house with no notice and no indication of how long he'll be gone 😆
The whole Royal family is autistic in some fashion, because look at them. Pale is an inventor in his spare time and is always thinking about how to optimize infrastructure in the town of Hallownest. He also works late and forgets to eat or sleep when he's hyperfocused. Blanca (White Lady) spends more time with her garden and her large variety of houseplants than with her children, and everything has to be clean and Just So or she'll make a fuss. She always adjusts her children's and stepdaughter's clothing before they leave the house, much to Ghost's and Hornet's chagrin.
Hollis couldn't break a rule to save their life and comes off as stiff and robotic when trying to interact with people. Their parents are proud of the former and entirely oblivious to the latter.
Kinsey is sensory-sensitive and awkward. Loud noises, bright lights, and busy rooms drive them crazy. This does not stop them from being kind of an extrovert or from getting into trouble with Hornet.
Hornet, for her part, has some sensory issues with clothing (and hates the fancy things her stepmother tries to shove her into with a passion) and speaks in a very blunt but also overly archaic/wordy manner (if you've seen her dialogue in game you'll know what I'm talking about). She has little interest in socializing with people unless a) they're her mom or siblings, b) she's causing trouble, and/ or c) it's something violence-related.
Greene takes after their mom with their love of plants. They also love animals and are better with animals than people. They're super shy and awkward lol
Ghost is well, Ghost. They often struggle to speak/experience speech loss and have a raging case of ADHD in addition to the autism, making them constantly chasing after new and interesting things, unwilling and unable to pay attention unless they're interested, and entirely oblivious to social norms. In other words, they're hell to deal with 😆
Quirrel is Miss Monomon's adopted son and a giant nerd. He's 14 and a sophomore in high school because he skipped a grade as a kid. He has an I ❤️ isopods (group including pill bugs) pin on his backpack and is really into "bugs" and other invertebrates.
Hollis, nicknamed "Holly" by their siblings, is Very Tall (like 6 foot 5 or something), rather gangly and skinny, and AMAB (in part to make their height more plausible lol). At first they look kinda intimidating but they wouldn't hurt a fly, and are just about the quietest, shyest person ever, with one exception: if you hurt their siblings, you incur their wrath. Other than that they will take anything that's thrown at them - bullying, name-calling, way too many home responsibilities for a teenager, etc. - with a stoic front. They have just about no self-esteem and have a bad case of "awkward tall person syndrome," always hunching over and trying not to stand out despite the fact that they are literally head and shoulders above their classmates. Like all their siblings they have white hair (which they keep long), pale skin and very dark eyes.
Blanca (the White Lady) is an albino, thus the white skin, white hair, and very light blue eyes. She's also something of a Karen and acts like being an albino makes her an oppressed minority or something.
She also never leaves the house without makeup.
Tiso Shieldsmith is Hollis's classmate and maybe-friend who moved to Hallownest last year. He's kind of an idiot teenage boy and he calls Hollis "Stick Bug" thanks to their stick-bug-esque physique. He's, obviously, in the martial arts and fencing club, and he's kind of trying to be a tough jock but not always succeeding. I love the way he interacts with Hollis:
"Yo, Stick Bug, my man!  I mean, my non-binary guy... I mean, uh...whatever. How are you doing, pal?"
*Hollis stares at him in an expressionless way as Tiso rambles.*
Hollis always refers to their parents as Mother and Father instead of just saying "Mom" or "Dad." It's out of respect mainly, and also because Blanca tends to like everything fancy. The outfit I drew Hollis in is what they normally wear to school, at their mother's request XD
Radiance is a local celebrity with a cult-like fan base. Miss Sybil (Seer) is the school's history teacher and the students are shocked when they discover she's an intense Radiance fan. “Radiance” is a stage name and she's Grimm's cousin (a relationship neither of them particularly care to mention most of the time). Pale hates her for reasons unknown, to the point where Pale has tried to pass all kinds of town restrictions on shows and circuses specifically because of Grimm and Radiance. Grimm either ignores the anti-circus ordinances or finds loopholes, and protesters stormed the town hall at the restrictions affecting the Radiance, enough that Pale had to undo them.
Grimm has some level of ability to break the law in Hallownest in part because the police in Hallownest don't want to deal with him either (lol) and in part because Blanca has used her influence and her relationship with the Chief of Police, Dryya, to discourage the Hallownest Police Department from prosecuting him. “Oh, Mr. Nightmare can’t be in jail, his son is my youngest’s best friend, and the poor man is a single father. I can’t imagine what that would do to poor Grimm Junior. Not to mention I’ve heard that Radiance is actually a relative of his… do you want her fans storming the police department?” (This is, of course, behind her husband’s back.)
Grimm is also very good at finding loopholes, twisting people's words, and generally being a pain in the arse to anyone who has issues with him.
Herrah has dark skin and a fat but very muscular figure. Usually around Hornet and the Royal kids she's all motherly and sweet, but when dealing with people she doesn't like she's intimidating AF.
Obviously the Royal family is white af because... a) they're entitled jerks, at least to a degree and b) look at them.
Hornet has brown/light brown skin but still has the white-blond hair and almost-black irises that run in Dad's side of the family. She gets strangers trying not to stare occasionally, but at least she isn't so pale she could be mistaken for a corpse XD
In fact I imagine that several of the characters often get strangers trying not to stare- Hollis and Grimm Jr. come to mind.
Grimm has dressed his son in red and black since he was a baby; it’s not every day you see an 8-year old dressed in a fancy black and red suit with a cape and makeup that looks like a cross between "vampire," "emo," and "circus."
Tiso: Yo, Stick Bug! What's with the dress? You look like you're going to prom or something!
[Hollis is wearing a white frilly dress that's too long to be anything other than one their mom ordered specially made, along with a fancy necklace and earrings]
Hollis: Mother has tea with her gardeners' club this afternoon and would like to show me off to all her gardening friends (said in a completely calm tone, even with a slight smile)
Tiso: "Show you off?!?” You say it like you're her favorite doll instead of her kid! Are you expected to do anything at her event? That sure doesn't look like gardening clothes. Your mom is definitely being weird, you sure you're okay with this?
Hollis: Of course. It means Mother is proud of me.
Hollis has issues.
They're shy and desperate for approval and their parents are (somewhat unintentionally) walking all over them. They need love and support that's not tying their value to being "perfect." Luckily, their siblings don't want Perfect Obedient Hollis, they want the real, happy them.

Woof. Okay. This has been a mostly disappointing viewing experience.
Critical difference between this year's countdown and the past two is that now that I have stable employment, there is far less time to be watching horror films. I normally begin the countdown in September but we started in July of this year and still barely managed to crack 40, with my original goal being a full 100 this year. Timing. As such a lot of my plans and possible viewings were cut short and compared to last year specifically we fell back on a lot of "seen it already" at least for the top of the list.
This year's batch of viewings were largely blah, but a step up from the shitshow I put myself through last year (watching nearly every Texas Chainsaw sequel does things to a person). As such it'll be difficult to conjure up words for a decent chunk of these mostly because yes, these movies exist, I watched them, I would not recommend that you yourself watch them. That is all. If I write briefly on a given film that's not necessarily an indictment of its quality as there a decent number of these that I saw and enjoyed it's just their impact might be a bit fleeting. You will know which ones I actively disliked. I mostly just want to write about the top five or so but I will play fair.
Our grand loser this year is Swamp Thing, the DC Comics adaptation by Wes Craven. I watched this pretty much entirely because I finally got the Alan Moore Swamp Thing run in paperback this year after quite some time of having it on my to-buy list. Longtime Rachael/Ray/Ratchet fans may recall me reading it in early 2019 alongside [REDACTED]. Still one of the best Moore comics, and a second volume of Swamp Thing wouldn't have been possible without the success of this film. For context I did read the early Swampies by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and my general reaction to those was a'ight but there was definitely material for a serviceable film adaptation there. This is not that serviceable film adaptation. I'm not hung up on details like how Abigail has no connection to Arcane now despite being his niece in the comics, but this film is just kind of painful in how relatively unambitious it is which is saying something for Swamp Thing sword fighting another human mutation at the end of this. It's just silly and stupid and not scary or awe inspiring or anything, the Swamp Thing suit sucks, the action sucks, any sense of pathos is not there or gone, it stretches for 30 minutes too long like it's a padded TV pilot, the only highlight is being able to see Adrienne Barbeau's breasts. Fuck this it's a miserable experience to sit through. My mistake for watching a Wes Craven film that doesn't have "Scream" in the title.
Our next shitter is the two-for-one abomination that is Teenagers Battle The Thing (1958) and Curse of Bigfoot (1975); these are the same movie except Curse of Bigfoot has a 25 minute opening scene framing device that is bizarre given that "The Thing" of the original film is a Native American mummy of some sort unearthed by a group of white high school students. It's the rare personal pet project movie made for fun by some locals but the only highlights are the occasional kill scene, Curse of Bigfoot ranks lower just for making me sit through it longer. Blah.
Speedrunning through a bunch of these because theyre all varying degrees of bad and I don't want to spend any longer writing about these than you probably do reading about them: The Haunting is awful and I don't even super care for the original film so adding shitty CGI monsters and a moral lesson of "it's about family!" doesn't help. Orca is a shitty Jaws cash-in that's like a reverse Moby Dick where the sea animal hunts down the human, nice finale where the orca and shitty poacher guy are fighting it out in the Arctic but otherwise avoid. Don't Go in The House is a mysoginistic torture porn movie that really doesn't sell the "seemingly normal guy is a closet nutcase" thing even though movies made before and after have done it well (see Maniac several paragraphs below). The Beast is advertised as this really scandalous porno film but most of it is French aristocrats sitting around in stuffy rooms arguing about real estate. I think I only watched Countess Dracula for its inclusion in the "if this is her vibe I would fucking cum" meme and it's barely worth bringing up at all. Hillbillys in a Haunted House has an absolutely lovely Tennessee country soundtrack that I wish I could listen to without having to watch the actual movie which is devoid of both scares and laughs. Beware! The Blob gives off the feeling of sitting at a funeral for a family member that was just distant enough for you to be aware of them but not actually be upset but it's still a funeral so it's not like you're smiling, stick with the 1988 Blob film. Alien Space Avenger has some decent gore effects but that's all I can recall from it. Shriek of The Mutilated has one of the best titles for an otherwise uninspired yeti movie that has a needless third act twist about it being a cover for a cult and blah blah blah fuck you. Baby Blood has an alien mutant whatever crawl up a woman's vagina into her womb and she has to eat people to feed it and yeah I'm actually struggling to remember what happens here. The Mutations has a scene where a guy cuts into a tree and it bleeds, I think he's played by Donald Pleasance. Yeah, it's like Freaks except it plays to the freak show straight so you get to laugh at all the outcasts of society, no thank you.
Some odds and ends that I'd say are decent-to-pretty-good: Phase IV has some footage of ants and synth music. All you need is some footage of ants and synth music. Curse of The Faceless Man employs a rarely seen archetype of the living statue monster, it's cute. The Sadist is another starring vehicle for Arch Hall Jr., who was also the star of last Halloween's Eegah! (1962), though this film is a bold trendsetter for the 1960's with Hall being a unhinged killer holding people for ransom until they can fix his car and he can make a getaway. The film lives and dies by Hall's performance and it's mostly the latter until we get to an absolutely superb final act with him hunting down his remaining victims, it makes the whole film worth seeing. Jennifer is an oddball that plays out mostly like a character drama ("It wasn't my fault Daddy it was that stupid hillbilly bitch Jennifer") that suddenly remembers that it's supposed to be a cash-in of Carrie (1976) in the last 20 minutes and cue our titular character being able to summon and control snakes to send after her tormentors. Girls Nite Out is a plodding meandering slasher that's oddly hypnotizing considering so much of it takes place in pitch-black night and the killer is wearing a bear mascot costume with serrated knives hidden under the glove, not sure what fully to make of it. The Monster of Piedras Blancas is made up of leftover parts from the Gillman, Mole People, and Metaluna Mutant, but still manages to star in a decent enough film that gives a sense of what a series of monster attacks would do to a small seaside community. The Cat and The Canary is "cute" for lack of a better term being a horror comedy before the former genre had fully crystalized. Reefer Madness is horror adjacent more than anything but a hilariously good time about how the use of "marihuana" will drive today's youth into becoming crazed fiends and get involved in organized crime.
We can do this.
The Company of Wolves has an excellent story book like setting an atmosphere that you can't get in films nowadays and it's a shame that it's mostly remembered for its transformation sequences. it's Alive is the best Larry Cohen film by default of not sucking but it's still not "great", genius however for playing the concept of mutant newborn killer baby completely seriously without any sense of humor to the proceedings. The Girl Who Knew Too Much is almost a parody of giallo films which is interesting given those hadn't fully sprang up in 1963; absolute highlight is the main character being interviewed in bed by doctors and reporters and the like that yes she did see a murder and no she doesn't drink. I've always been fascinated and haunted by I Am Legend and while The Omega Man doesn't really capture the novel to a superb degree it's so beautifully shot that it lands high in the rankings for that alone. Night Caller From Outer Space is hilarious to me because of how it shifts halfway through from a Hammer-esque mystery about a meteorite with radioactive properties to a film about an alien that lures women in through a modeling advertisement. Blind Woman's Curse I've mentally confused with Irezumi for a while now (haha all 1960's Japanese genre films where woman have large animal tattoos on their backs are the saaame), and it's one I mostly watched for being directed by Teruo Ishii, but there's enough bloody yakuza fights and cats licking up blood for me to stick around; not the strongest Meiko Kaiji vehicle compared to Female Prisoner Scorpion or Lady Snowblood. Maniac I find mostly interesting as a precursor to American Psycho (2000) but also it's probably the only serious film to successfully pull off it's ending trope (which I will not spoil here). The Child is an absolutely lovely 1970's only-a-dozen-people-made-this-and-not-much-more-watched-it horror that oozes atmosphere, I could watch stuff like this all day. Aaand Zombie 3 is far and away the best film that Lucio Fulci has been involved with that I've ever seen. I love random scenes and set pieces of ghouls just massacring people that are shit out out of luck.
Okay, now for the ones I actually want to write about.
The Wasp Woman is one that sticks in my head way more than any other random monster movie that Roger Corman directed in the latw 1950's. I've said on here and Letterboxd that it could have served as a standard pop-feminist piece about how the cosmetology industry is built on misogyny and invariably a monster is accidentally created because of that, but this most recent viewing has made me sort of "get it" because that might be what the film is going for considering Susan Cabot's performance leads me to believe that she is aware that she is becoming a homicidal wasp monster but views it as a tragic means to an end where she still has the ability to have a new advertising campaign with her as the star. Tragic. This is why you don't wear make up.
Tumblr media
Both Noroi: The Curse and The Wolf House are ones I didn't care for whatsoever but I put them in places on the ranking that I thought were fair given that people should probably watch them regardless of my personal thoughts. Noroi's format didn't really lend itself to the escalation of tension and reveal of information that the plot demanded and I found myself thinking it meanders quite a bit. The Wolf House was an odd one where everything that was happening onscreen bounced off of me mostly because I felt intimately aware that I was watching a movie, that someone had made something and that I was now being shown it. Blah. People like these so don't let me stop you.
Our animated offerings this year...
Michael Jackson's Halloween more than anything feels like an unlicensed creation that later had an English fan dub commissioned, not something that actually aired on CBS twice. Any laughs that I found in this thing were the unintentional type as we open up with Bubbles talking and being Jackson's chauffeur; you know exactly what you're getting into. Very little of the plot is explained but I'm assuming Jackson (who has no lines given this was made posthumously) orchestrates a dark fantasy adventure to hook two...teenagers? People in their late 20's? And convince them to follow their dreams of performing instead of working a deadend dayjob. I'm not sure who the actual audience for this was given it feels like so much of it was made for children but I will say anything that has this much of Michael Jackson's music in it can't be all bad, though I'm not sure why they didn't largely stick with tracks from the album Thriller (in the contention for best album ever, I don't care).
Tumblr media
Gamera: Rebirth is one I feel like I'm on the outside on compared to most other tokusatsu fans because I didn't really *love* to a serious degree even though, yes, Gamera is finally back. The first three episodes are mostly just kind of a slog for me with the backhalf not doing enough to retroactively make me think highly of it, though giving off End of Evangelion vibes may make me consider that a second viewing must be in order down the line. Rebirth's strongest attribute is that it feels like it takes into consideration and influence from every prior era of Gamera, no stone is left unturned, and it's a marked contrast from how every recent Godzilla property only captures a single facet of their respective character. But that also creates unique issues like how a lot of criticism of ongoing US military presence in Japan is undercut so there can be a white kid in the main cast (because white children were always present in half of the Showa series) or having the ancient civilization that genetically engineered the kaiju now being malicious and actively sacrificing children as a means of reshaping the world gives me vaguely anti-semitic tones, I don't know, Gamera is still here, I guess.

"I was just a little twerp who liked Scooby-Doo and Smurfs, now I was viewing Cthulhu mutants ruin the Earth."
Everyday that we have Inhumanoids is a gift. Inhumanoids is another Hasbro/Sunbow production like G. I. Joe, Transformers, or Jem and The Holograms, and it is truly tragic that it never got anywhere near that level of attention compared to its siblings. The fact that a 1980's action figure tie-in cartoon is named for its antagonists is only the start; the series follows a small paramilitary outfit of scientists named Earth Core that are tasked with more or less saving the world alongside the Mutores, elemental beings, when the Inhumanoids, eldritch abominations, are unleashed. The degree of world-building beyond your typical "good guys vs. bad guys" affair is astounding with villainous humans and virtuous monsters abounding, but Inhumanoids is mostly magical and remembered for saying fuck all to any type of broadcast standards. Seeing giant monsters destroy cities, undead armies, and spelunking deep into the Earth (where nightmares begin...) are just standard fair here, as are witnessing the actual Inhumanoids such as Metlar (basically the devil) or D'Compose (giant undead entity that can zombify people by touching them and uses his ribcage like a jail cell) in action. The first five episodes here are the pilot movie of sorts for the series which only lasted thirteen overall, and they get more grissly from here on out, but maybe it's best that Inhumanoids is the short lived cartoon and no the cartoon that went soft as early as its second season. I will never not love this show, to this day it's one of my favorite animated series from any decade, much less the 1980's.
Back to our regularly scheduled live-action programming...
Student Bodies is a fascinating film for a myriad of reasons the first of which is that there were somehow enough slasher films by 1981 for there to be a comedy poking fun at all the already established genre-cliches. It's essentially Scary Movie (2000) a full 20 years ahead of the curve only actually funny in spite of the subject matter frequently being as juvenile and prejudiced; but it also reminds me quite a bit of Scream (1996) with stuff like two killers working together. All I know is I was in for a decent time when the film opens with three identical shots of a house just with different framing text: "HALLOWEEN," "FRIDAY THE 13TH," "JAMIE LEE CURTIS' BIRTHDAY" and then the killer, The Breather, calls the opening kill girl doing nothing but breathing heavily, she hangs up, he calls back with "I SAID [heavy breathing]."
Tumblr media
Return of The Living Dead is one of those films that should have destroyed the any artifically-imposed boundaries between "high" and "low" art. Every aspect of this film is brilliantly made, it just so happens to be made for stuff like Scooby-Doo music overlaid on top of thunderstorms over graveyards where one female character is stripping to the concept of dying. Media involving ghouls is incredibly oversaturated, and this was still the case in the 1980's where a film like this had to redefine the rules to make it so killing ghouls was basically a non-option. It only recently struck me on this viewing that that's the whole purpose of removing virtually all weaknesses they have, to keep the characters as the nail instead of the hammer. Compared to the Romero films, there's never a point where anyone is in control of the situation, it just escalates further and further until there is literally no way out. Taking that into consideration, there's no way this film couldn't have been a comedy that frames people getting swarmed and eaten by ghouls as hilarious.
The soundtrack and the faux-punk sensibilities lend this a daft feeling of "you shouldn't be watching this" in spite of it not being one of the MOST gory horror films of the 1980's. I still don't get how this never broke into the mainstream. I mean somehow people know that ghouls (in this film) speak and only eat brains but I can't go down to Target and get a Tarman action figure like I can one of Michael Myers. As such Return of The Living Dead remains a criminally overlooked film regardless of its subject matter. It's made me laugh and cringe and feel disgusted and revolt at the concept at dying but mostly it's made me feel a delicious sense of joy at seeing corpses rise out of the ground to the tune of "Do you wanna party? IT'S PARTY TIIIME!" Some of you need to sit in the corner and think about your life choices for making stupid shit like Re-Animator (1985) or fucking Shaun of The Dead (2004) more popular than this, fuck you.
Tumblr media
The act of watching Spider Baby is like discovering the missing link. For as much as 1960 gave us an explosion of horror (Eyes Without a Face, The Ship of Monsters, Psycho, Jigoku, Black Sunday, etc.) and Night of The Living Dead (1968) reins as the perennial transition point of the genre, Spider Baby is the road by which we go from The Cat and The Canary and The Old Dark House to the likes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Eraserhead, it's magical finding an essential piece of a genre you love so much. Both the former and latter points of comparison are apt as a family of now only children [and their butler] suffering from Poe-esque hereditary illness have their condemned house set upon by distant relatives and everything slowly unravels.
Lon Chaney Jr. is an actor who for the longest time I felt never got a proper chance to shine wherein the last 25 years or so of his career was spent playing as side character actor in independent films. Spider Baby is his crowning achievement. Seeing him smile through almost tears on several occasions as he has to play bridge between worlds of sanity and madness and lie to everyone that he has some sense of control over the situation is brilliant in ways I always knew he was capable of but had never seen before this point. Bravo.
Tumblr media
I will never not love Basket Case with everything I've got. This is the epitome of 1980's horror and my clear pick for best of the decade. It has everything from being a grungy putrid grindhouse spectacle to being an intimate character drama to everything presented through a wry ironic lense where you can't tell if any "bad" performances are all done on purpose. Between this, Brain Damage (1988), and Frankenhooker (1990), there is literally absolutely no reason why Frank Henenlotter shouldn't be more popular than Stuart Gordon, Brian Yuzna, and Lloyd Kaufman *combined*. It's tragic that the world of cinema being enclosed and captured by studios again in the late 1980's prevented us from getting more from him, but realistically could we ask anymore than what we already got from Basket Case? I could watch this every day and never grow tired of it. I will never stop making more and more people watch this.

If Basket Case is the apex of 1980's horror, then Messiah of Evil is the same for 1970's horror. This is one of the most efficient horror films ever made in how not a single frame is wasted, the opening scene is literally a guy running from unseen force, seeking refuge, getting his throat slit, cue title card with synth music that then leads us to a sunburnt hallway as our narrator descends into acceptance of complete lack of control of the situation. Every night shot in this film must be 50 - 75% completely black with whatever headlight or store front there is just making the scenery look like a dollhouse that our characters are trapped inside. There's so many shots of people running away or walking down streets that make them look tiny as the camera is so far.
Every scene is an exercise in building up dread. There's no point where the film relents, something awful is not only coming, it's already here and there's nothing anyone can do. What I love particularly is that the mystery being laid out doesn't offer any answers because there's another mystery on top of what our characters find out only too late. Layers upon layers of dread that even the titular Messiah of Evil isn't the center of. The world is a cruel fucking place where this film languishes in obscurity whilst shit like The Exorcist enjoys mainstream attention. A lot of my taste amounts to "why isn't this thing I like more popular" and cases like Messiah of Evil vindicate me.

"Godzilla is the son of the atomic bomb. He is a nightmare created out of the darkness of the human soul. He is the sacred beast of the apocalypse." - Tomoyuki Tanaka
Generally a yearly trend is that a #1 pick for Halloween is self-evident to me and this year it was Basket Case for all of 30 seconds until I picked Godzilla back up.
There's something to be said how Godzilla isn't quite a horror monster? Terrifying but not necessarily creepy, but what power do things that go bump in the night have against the destruction of everything you know? Everytime I watch Godzilla is like the very first time, when flashing lights out at sea destroy fishing ships I have no idea what happened, or at least any much of a clue as anyone in film does when we're told that the entire ocean exploded.
Godzilla is a reptile, but lacks scales and its entire body is coated in keloid scars. In 1954 Godzilla must have been the largest monster every committed to film, trains are derailed from running against its ankle and bell and radio towers are throttled for being a sensory inconvenience. Godzilla's first on-screen appearance on Odo Island is obscured by a hurricane but the impression is clear; you can't fight Godzilla in the same way you can't fight a natural disaster. When Tokyo is reduced to complete ruin amidst a sea of flames, it's an onslaught of destruction never before seen in a film of this genre. Survivors being afflicted with radiation poisoning shows that Godzilla will claim victims long after being driven back to sea.
There's a sheer apocalyptic dread to all of this sensed by all the characters. Love tries to exist on the edge of annihilation. There's nothing that can be done but persevere and maybe hope tomorrow will be better. A scene that always strikes me is when Serizawa is adamant about not using the Oxygen Destroyer until forcibly confronted with the results of one night of Godzilla making landfall in Japan. The absolute pain felt by everyone in the finale starts here, things couldn't play out any differently as the "scientist of the century" can't join in and celebrate his victory.

Godzilla is a rare perfect film. I will never tire of it.
