stephanie palmer stepped out of the door of the gray, two-story house on kansas street and sniffed the air. it was warm and fresh with a bit of coolness and spice to it. to the pre-teen girl, it felt like it had a special significance: it marked, in her own mind, the official start of summer. if it hadn’t been for the fact that the school year wasn’t over just yet, she would have honestly thought that the summer season was really here. but, unfortunately for her, it wouldn’t end for another seven hours and forty-five minutes. at least the last day of school was today, even if it seemed so far away.
nevertheless, steph thought about how she felt her summer break might go. she felt that same mixture of eagerness, excitement, and slight dread that most teenagers that lived in derry, maine felt about the season.
she was a very pretty girl of twelve years (although she would be turning thirteen the next month), slim and angular with messy, blonde hair falling without fanfare right to her shoulders. there were a lot of crazy hairstyles in the 80s, but steph just thought it was a trend; she had tried herself but it was a fucking pain in the ass for her to keep up with. she wasn’t like those colorful girls at derry middle school, and she wasn’t the most beautiful young lady — at least, in her mind — so she honestly never understood the mess. in her opinion, there were more interesting things to do in life, like reading, than spending all that time washing, blow-drying, teasing, or just doing whatever to your hair that would just ruin it.
steph’s life as a pre-teen was more simple and boring than all that stuff and that was just fine with her.
she was dressed in simple school attire, although she was wearing clothing that was slightly warm for the hot weather on the horizon: a print skirt, leggings underneath that, tennis shoes, and boy’s shirt under a jean jacket. loaded down with a heavy backpack, she appeared to be round-shouldered and flat-chested, but that didn’t worry her at all. today was a school day and there was no way you could look glamorous when you went. so you do the best you can and if your friends tease you about how you dress, you grin and deal with it.
she was slightly surprised to see several children around her age already rushing out their doors and riding their bikes to school. even though she was a very proud loser, she sometimes couldn’t help but feel as if she didn’t belong in this shitty town, but she always ignored that feeling. she was quite happy with her friends.
and she always would be.
her unusually dark blue eyes crossed over two young girls with their mother as the woman put them in the car. they had bright smiles on their faces, and steph knew that they were happy that summer would be arriving by the end of the day. she herself knew that neither of the girls was amber o’connor, one of the children she often babysat from time to time; that young girl lived down the street, not right across from her.
ah, babysitting: the number one boring job in derry. to every single teenager, with the exception of steph herself, babysitting was a fucking chore to get through! but the pre-teen really didn’t mind watching over her two hosts that she would be in charge of every now and then, from once a week to every two weeks: justin and amber o’connor. and that was exactly what she was going to be doing tonight, just like she always did. but she at least never got bored of it, unlike the other teenagers that had the same job as her.
teenagers always used babysitting as an excuse to get money, and sure, steph needed some money for whenever she needed to get groceries for her and her mother, but she never begged for it like the others did. she genuinely cared about justin and amber; in fact, she could even call the children her friends. and, because of this, she would happily be spending another evening supervising justin’s strange addiction to horror movies (although she was the same way), reading amber 𝘴𝘭𝘦𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘺 for the millionth time before putting her to sleep, and satisfying their craving (and hers) for popcorn and soda.
“stephanie, stephanie,” she said under her breath, shaking her head as she chuckled, “at this rate, you’ll end up being like laurie strode. oh, how far you’ve fallen!”
“what’re you daydreaming about, sweetie?” came a voice from behind her and steph whipped her head around. she grinned when she saw who it was.
jamie palmer, a woman of forty-three and who was steph’s mother, was standing on the front porch with the door open a little. she was a beautiful middle-aged woman who had wavy and messy brown hair that complemented her sea green eyes perfectly. while steph’s eyes were often compared to an arctic glacier, jamie’s were like a clear lake in a dark forest; if you looked closer at that lake you could see a round shallow crevice filled with completely transparent water. they were the prettiest part of her kind face that looked a lot like her daughter’s.
“oh, you know,” steph replied merrily, “the usual: going to parties and acting stupid with my friends.” she knew that her mother wouldn’t take her seriously.
and she didn’t.
“oh, thank goodness!” jamie exclaimed, sighing with fake relief. “i thought you were thinking about getting a good education and actually studying in school. phew!” she pretended to wipe perspiration off of her forehead and the two both laughed.
“oh, don’t worry about me,” she retorted playfully. “my mother raised me to be a good girl. just like the awesome person she is!”
the two stood on the porch for a moment, just appreciating how dazzling the still rising sun was. its rays filled the sky with shades of pink, amber, and orange; the sunrise signaled a brand new day, another opportunity to live (possibly the billionth chance). The light shone upon their faces so impeccably that they didn’t even notice that it was glittering in the orbs of their eyes.
“well, i don’t want you to be late for school,” said jamie, patting her only child on the back. “don’t forget, you have to be home a little earlier today so you can be at the o’connor’s by 4:00.”
“i know,” replied steph, tugging her backpack straps closer to her.
“okay, you have a good day at school, sweetie.”
steph nodded with a smile, leaning forward to give her mother a goodbye kiss on the cheek and a warm hug. it was so simple and she did this every day, but it was always the best part about leaving her home when she showed her mother affection; it was more important to the young girl than jamie thought, especially considering what the woman was going through currently.
steph set out down kansas street after grabbing her light blue bicycle, pulling it along with her since she couldn’t ride it. on her back, her bag was slung over it, weighing down her body like it was the planet earth itself. she suddenly found herself thinking about the fact that this was her last day of middle school; after today, she would never have to step foot into that horrid place ever again. she hated it there, so she was glad that it was ending for her and she would go on to high school. rumors had it that derry high was a much more pleasant place, and she couldn’t wait to be a freshman.
but she also thought of the nice teachers that she would be leaving behind — for example, mrs. douglass — and it kind of made her sulk a little. those people helped her get by when times were tough at school with the bowers gang running around and all. despite this, her tiny sliver of sadness at the thought couldn’t overpower her excitement to sprint out of the school as fast as possible when the bell rang, to catch up with her friends (the losers club) in the hallway and talk to them about summer plans.
and that was when a slight feeling of misery crept into her emotions, and she inwardly winced.
it had been eight months since georgie denbrough had vanished into thin air, and she was still deeply saddened by the news, but not as much as she had been when she had learned it on that fateful october day. she had sat in her room for days on end, not saying a word, just thinking about the fun times she and the little boy had since she was best friends with his older brother, bill denbrough.
she began to think about bill, and a wave of sympathy washed through her soul at the thought of the boy. she had been trying her best to help him through the tragedy, trying to make him smile and laugh like he used to; it mostly worked, but she understood how he felt when it didn’t. she couldn’t even imagine losing a friend or a family member like that, even if georgie was ‘missing.’
yeah, steph honestly thought that the boy had long since died after his disappearance. she didn’t dare say this to bill’s face, not wanting to break the boy’s heart even more, knowing that it would break hers as well. she thought about the look on his face if she ever told him that and it was horrifying to her, which made her shake her head, breaking herself away from the thought. it was unspeakable, unthinkable!
𝘫𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘴, 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘩… 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘱 𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧, she thought in her mind.
“hey, steph!”
rarely had she been so relieved to be pulled out of a fantasy. she sighed with genuine relief, unlike her mother earlier, and she turned to her right, a happier grin forming on her face as she saw a small boy jogging towards her. a part of her was confused as to why he hadn’t waited for her to get him so she could walk him to school. 𝘰𝘩, 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, she thought. it was just last-day-of-school shenanigans.
the boy that ran up to her was justin o’connor, the boy that she often babysat along with his little sister, amber. he was a bright-looking nine year old with tousled brown hair and bright blue eyes, and he had two or three books in his left arm, which made steph giggle a bit. this boy was just like her sometimes; it usually amused her, but she would be curious at other given times. she was feeling the former today as he reached her.
“hi, justin,” she replied brightly, ruffling his hair; this was something she always did, and it used to annoy the boy greatly. he was used to it now, although he faked irritation.
as they walked side by side for several paces, he looked up at her. “you’re coming over tonight, right?” he inquired. steph nodded instantly.
“like i always do,” she answered modestly, slowing down her walking pace a little so he could keep up with her. justin o’connor was not a very fast walker, she learned very quickly, since he had a lazy step to him. this never bothered the both of them, especially steph (she was normally a very patient person unless you made her mad).
justin smiled even more, satisfied with this answer. “are we gonna do the things we always do?” he asked. steph sighed inwardly; this was the exact same question he asked every time she came over to watch over him and amber for a few hours. nevertheless, she nodded, the grin never leaving her face. she then, once again, reached out her right hand to mess up his hair, and he chuckled.
amber o’connor was being taken to school by her father, since her parents didn’t trust her enough to start walking the few miles to school yet. steph had definitely understood this when justin had mentioned it to her a year before, but she couldn’t wait until the little girl could start walking with them to school as well.
steph and justin continued walking, joking around and laughing like they did every day. the pre-teen, if she were honest, loved the young boy and considered a friend, not just a boy that she looked after on a weekly basis. she hoped that he never lost his innocence, although she knew that it would eventually happen, which made her sulk slightly on the inside. if he didn’t lose his innocence, he would forever be a good person that was kind and would help others. but if he did, he could use that to a good advantage and still be a nice person, but he wouldn’t be an angel like he was right now.
she ignored that thought, scolding herself for even thinking such a thing. she wanted to smack herself in the face, but she restrained herself from doing so, not wanting to do something stupid. steph decided to be wise and keep the happy look planted on her face, and justin wasn’t able to see through it, much to her relief.
after twenty minutes, the two kids finally arrived at derry elementary school, which was justin’s stop for today. steph was a little bummed that she wouldn’t be able to talk to him more, but she knew he had to deal with the last day of the school year. and she had to do the same.
“well, this is where you stop,” she announced jokingly. “try not to let those idiots put you down.” as she said this, she softly punched his shoulder, making him laugh.
“you don’t have to worry about that,” justin responded with a proud smirk. “i can take care of myself.”
steph nodded. “you’re a smart boy, justin. because of that, i believe you. now, go on and enjoy your last day.” she gave him a friendly hug, like she did every time they arrived here.
“okay. you too. i’ll see you tonight,” justin said, breaking away and running towards the school’s open doors.
“see you.”
after she had continued walking, steph paused on the corner, feeling odd, as if someone’s eyes were boring into the back of her skull. she turned and gazed back at the school and her eyebrows knit in confusion. was she crazy or was there a shape standing behind a tree, staring at her?
she rubbed her eyes and looked again; there was nobody there. good. her imagination was just working overtime again. so, ignoring her increasingly worrying thoughts, she turned back around and continued her stride to school, pulling her bike alongside her like she did every single day.
god, she was looking forward to a good day.

2:27 p.m.
“i hope you all have a wonderful summer,” mrs. douglass said in a rather chipper voice as she stood in front of the classroom. there was a true grin on her face while she went over to the blackboard. “now, there are a few things i would like to remind you all before the bell rings.” as she said this, she took the side of a piece of chalk and began writing on the blackboard in large bold letters. she started making a list for all of the children so they would know what to do over the summer. there were only four bullets, so it really didn’t look like much to the young teenagers.
steph had not been paying much attention for most of the class, although she acted like she was; and, if you ever examined the blonde-haired girl from time to time, you would’ve thought she was a great actress. and she was. if she was zoned-out, she pretended that she was actually focused on whatever you were saying, although she never truly understood the words. for the time being, she was just sitting at her desk in the back of the classroom, glancing between the clock and her notebook sitting in front of her.
there were now two and a half minutes left of class and, in turn, the school year as a whole. and, although she was beyond happy to see it end for good, she was a little too focused on what she was doodling in her notebook: her own sketch of the poster for the movie, 𝘢 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘦𝘭𝘮 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵. it was her favorite horror film, despite the fact that she never let the kids watch it whenever she babysat them. steph was afraid that it would spook them a little too much, and who could blame her? nobody that young should watch something like that.
the young girl eventually realized that she had been doodling for too long and that she was doing it so absently, and this made her finally sit up attentively when she noticed the bulleted list that mrs. douglass had made:
- 𝗴𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲.
- 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸.
- 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀.
- 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗯𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟳:𝟬𝟬 𝗽.𝗺. 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗲𝘄!
steph sighed to herself as she read that last one; in her mind, the curfew never seemed to stop all of those children from going missing. they were still dropping like flies and there was nothing that the police could do about it, much to her dismay. it caused her to look away from the blackboard and back down to her notebook, quietly drawing her breath in sharply. she finished her final touches on the sketch until she was satisfied enough. after this, she began writing something in giant letters.
𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬. 𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬. 𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬.
steph glanced back up at the clock.
one minute left.
good.
she turned back to her notebook.
she ignored the stares she was getting from some of her classmates that loved to pick on her; she was used to it by now and she didn’t give a flying fuck about them. she was just sucked into her own little world and she was just waiting for that loud bell of freedom to blare through the room. for god’s sake, she was even glancing out of the window because of how bored she was, and she smiled at the several kids who had already gotten out of class and who were dumping their school supplies into the garbage bins that sat beside the bike rack.
𝘪 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, steph thought to herself. 𝘪 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥… 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭, 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘪 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘴.
she turned her head ever so slightly.
“stephanie?”
the pronunciation of her name came like a thunderclap, and she jumped as if a bolt had struck her seat. “yes, ma’am?” she replied in a shaky voice, hearing the snickering of several students.
“what are you doing for summer vacation?” asked mrs. douglass as she stared at the blonde girl expectantly.
steph was aware of the eyes drilling holes into her. 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘮𝘺 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦, she silently thought. but, instead, a small but fake smile formed on her face. “i don’t know as of yet, mrs. douglass,” she replied smoothly.
her teacher nodded and turned to the rest of the class. “now, i just want you all to be safe and i hope you have a great four years at derry high…”
steph zoned out once again, turning back to her notebook to finish writing the words she had intended to print. after she was done, she started tapping her pencil against the desk, although she did so very silently. her midnight blue eyes were set on the classroom’s old clock that was hanging on the wall. time mocked her as it went by super slowly, 𝘸𝘢𝘺 too slow for her liking. she tried to be patient, but this was one of the rare occurrences where she couldn’t be when she wasn’t mad. she wasn’t even angry, but she was growing a little impatient to get out of this hellhole as fast as possible.
the summer was calling her name, and she wanted to follow that voice so badly.
steph glanced back down and read the giant words that she had written in her notebook:
𝘐’𝘔 𝘚𝘖 𝘉𝘖𝘙𝘌𝘋… 𝘓𝘌𝘛 𝘛𝘏𝘐𝘚 𝘚𝘊𝘏𝘖𝘖𝘓 𝘠𝘌𝘈𝘙 𝘌𝘕𝘋 𝘙𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘛 𝘕𝘖𝘞…
and, the bell finally rang, blaring throughout the building with shrill finality, and many students bounded out of the classroom with joy and relief. steph was one of those kids, although she wasn’t as hyper as the rest. somehow, she was able to get her mixtape in her walkman and she put the headphones over her ears as she kept walking down the hallway, trying to get to her locker. she pressed Play on the walkman, and heard the blissful lyrics of alice cooper’s 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘖𝘶𝘵 fill her ears.
𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘴𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘺𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦𝘴
steph rounded the corner of the hallway and froze instantly as she still heard the voices of her peers booming in her ears, bouncing off of the lockers in a rough manner. a tiny bit of fear flooded her for a second, but she managed not to show it, proving how great she was at hiding her true emotions. she locked eyes with henry bowers, and chills ran down her spine when her gaze caught his. the silent exchange only lasted for three seconds before she spun around and decided to take the long way to her locker.
luckily for her, it seemed as though bowers had decided to not go after her, and she sighed to herself, feeling immense relief. she couldn’t get the way he had smirked at her out of her mind and it made her sick to her stomach when she pictured it. she had used to be terrified of him and his gang, but after some advice from jamie, she learned to ignore those assholes and only stand up for herself and others when absolutely necessary.
jamie palmer was a very smart woman. she had learned a lot of things that she eventually taught steph. i guess that’s what happens when you’ve been a widow for thirteen years.
𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘴, 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴
𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘳𝘵𝘺 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴
𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳
𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭
steph stopped at her locker after the little encounter with the bowers gang; her excitement overpowered the slight worry she had felt for those few seconds as she barreled through the chattering students to get to her locker. she conquered her combination in next to no time, grabbing her backpack and slamming the locker door shut. she would never see it again after this, and she didn’t care. all she cared about was getting to her destination: the girls’ bathroom.
she just wanted a small break from the loud-mouthed students for just a few minutes before she left the school and caught up with her friends outside. surely, they must have been joking around or discussing summer plans without her, and she was perfectly fine with that.
𝘸𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘳
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘧𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳
𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭’𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺
after what seemed like forever, steph finally entered the girls’ bathroom, putting a hand to her chest; she was so happy to be rid of the swarm of students that were annoying her like a fly normally would when it buzzed around your head. she leaned the back of her head against the cool brick wall for just a second before pushing herself off of it as if it were a stool. she then made a beeline for the second stall in the room, the smell of cigarette smoke filling her nose; she resisted the urge to cough, since she hated the smell. she gently shut the door behind her and sat on the toilet, turning to the metallic wall beside her as she did.
she gently raised her hand and rapped on the wall three times. “bev?” she called out. “it’s me.”
“how’s it going, little loser?” came a musical voice in response. steph giggled slightly, trying to stifle her laughter as best as she could. beverly marsh 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 made her laugh, whether it was her very nonchalant manner, or how she liked to crack jokes every once in a while. the blonde-haired girl loved her best friend and hung out with her more than she did with her other friends.
“oh, you know, just glad this damn school year’s over,” she replied jokingly, and both girls laughed at this remark. “you okay in there?” she added, her amusement switching to slight concern. she couldn’t see if beverly nodded her head or not, but she heard a reply seconds later just as she heard new voices enter the bathroom.
“yeah,” replied beverly. “just excused myself to smoke for a minute.”
𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, steph thought humorously.
out of nowhere, the girl heard a loud groan of anger before someone’s door furiously made contact with the door of the stall next to her. steph jumped so suddenly that her head smacked against the wall out of shock; she held a hand against her forehead, begging for the pain to go away just as quickly as it had arrived.
“are you in there by yourself, 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳-𝘭𝘺?!” shouted a female voice that contained a lot of sass in it. “or do you have half the guys in the school with you, huh, slut?!”
steph’s blood boiled, but she didn’t dare move, knowing she would regret it if she did. she winced despite this, wishing she could comfort her friend, even if beverly marsh was beyond used to the bullying at this point; the girl had to deal with it every day, just like steph had to. even if the girls felt like it was everyday life now, that still didn’t take away from the fact that they hated it with a burning passion. and that was something that would always resonate with them.
“i know you’re in there, you little shit, i smell you,” the girl continued. “no wonder you don’t have any friends.”
𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘢 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘪𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘵, 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘢, steph thought angrily.
it was that curly-haired 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩, greta keene; she was the mean girl of the school that always took the chance to bully anyone that came across her path. sure, she wasn’t as bad as henry bowers or patrick hockstetter, but she was bad enough for the girls to deal with. every time she saw them, she wouldn’t hesitate to call them horrible names that they themselves never had the courage to say, and that always infuriated steph, although she barely said a word to her.
as she heard the taunting go on and on, steph began to hear one of the sinks running water, and she tilted her head in curiosity. but, at the same time, she was hoping that nothing bad would take place, even if she had the slight feeling that it would. she stayed still, frozen to where she sat, not moving a muscle; she began to panic slightly when she heard beverly speak up.
“which is it, greta?” she sighed, tired of hearing the insults over and over again. “am i a 𝘴𝘭𝘶𝘵 or a 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘵? make up your mind.”
now, greta wasn’t the only person in the school that was spreading rumors about the infamous beverly marsh. pretty much 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 in the school, with the exception of steph and her friends, thought that the girl had slept with nearly every boy around their age. this was not true in the slightest since, according to the girl herself, she had only been kissed by one boy, even if it was on the cheek. so the rumors were complete and utter bullshit.
“you’re trash,” greta replied, now genuinely angry with the girl. “we just wanted to remind you.”
just as steph stood up, ready to open the stall door to defend her best friend once again, it suddenly swung open, much to her surprise. she saw sally mueller, a girl just a little older than her with dirty blonde hair, holding a garbage bag that seemed to be filled with lots of trash. her eyes widened to the size of saucers, especially when sally met her gaze.
“what are 𝘺𝘰𝘶 doing in here, you loser?!” shouted sally, briefly letting go of the trash bag to grab steph. she jerked the blonde out of the stall and the poor girl ran into the wall, grunting when she made contact with it.
“oh… well, well, well,” came greta’s voice from behind her. “if it isn’t the little brace-faced 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩.”
steph bravely turned around and glared at greta with such intensity that she wouldn’t be surprised if it scared the female bully. “get the fuck out of here and leave bev alone,” she growled, gritting her teeth in anger. “she doesn’t deserve that.” the girl in front of her didn’t back down; instead, it seemed as if she had gotten even more furious.
“what are 𝘺𝘰𝘶 gonna do about it, palmer?” sneered greta. “you standing up for your trashy friend here? why 𝘢𝘳𝘦 you her friend anyway? you deserve far better than that filth!” as she said this, she pointed to the stall door that beverly was residing behind.
the blonde girl sighed, her face twisting into an expression of emotional agony. “just please leave her alone,” she pleaded.
“such a loser,” sally taunted as she lifted up the garbage bag while standing on the toilet of the second stall. she tilted it over and steph saw disgusting trash raining down into beverly’s stall, and she gasped quietly to herself in appallment. she turned to greta and shoved her harshly.
“get the fuck out of here!” she screamed at the top of her lungs, jutting her finger to the hallway. greta chuckled, ignoring how angry steph was as she tilted her head, motioning for the other girls to leave.
“let’s go, girls,” she told them before sending a kick to the back of steph’s right leg when the blonde turned around. “have a nice summer, 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳-𝘭𝘺. same goes to you, 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦-𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦.”
“just because i have braces doesn’t give you the right to tease me about it!” steph shouted after her. she didn’t even care if greta replied to her retort as she turned to the bathroom stall. she tentatively placed her hand on it, knowing it was locked. “you okay in there, bev?” she asked in a softer voice.
the door opened almost immediately after she had spoken, and her best friend came into view from behind it.
beverly marsh, in steph’s honest opinion, was one of the prettiest girls she had ever seen. she was pretty tall for an average teenage girl, and she had a slim form that went well with her long, fiery red hair that reached her waist as well as her blue-green eyes. she had a body that even made the most beautiful of girls jealous, although the redhead didn’t know this. sure, steph’s closest friend may have been poor with barely any money to get by, but she didn’t judge her at all; she saw her for who she was as a person, and it made beverly grateful.
“it’s nothing new,” she replied with a small smile. “don’t worry about me.” at that moment, steph realized that only beverly’s fingers were slightly covered with filth. nothing else was, besides her backpack, which was drenched in sink water and had several pieces of trash on it. it made the blonde grimace slightly, but she barely showed it.
“well… she shouldn’t do that to you, anyway,” said steph with a huff. “i gotta go and get home early. babysitting and all.”
beverly nodded. “of course,” she responded, giving steph a one-armed hug. “see you tomorrow, little loser.”
steph chuckled. “you too, bev.”
after they parted ways, steph walked back into the hallway. her flower-designed skirt fluttered against her slightly bony legs, her hair blew behind her and thudded against her neck, and her blue eyes were focused on the front doors of the school as she took each step forward. and, as she opened them, a feeling of happiness and relief settled in her mind; knowing that she was leaving school for at least three months was relaxing to her. she took a deep breath and smiled, walking down the steps of derry middle school.
a few seconds later, she spotted her friends and jogged over to them, a novel clutched in her right arm. as she approached them, she ignored the conversation the other kids were currently having about whatever. she didn’t really pay attention to them as she finally approached the four boys.
“hey, guys!” she greeted cheerfully. “wait… what’s wrong? you seem like you just went through trouble.” a mildly concerned look formed on her face as she said the last sentence.
her four best friends were standing in front of her: bill denbrough, eddie kaspbrak, richie tozier, and stanley uris. and they all either looked pissed off or overwhelmed. this worried her even more, since she was now wondering if something bad had happened to them.
“bowers and his asshole gang,” richie answered her quite easily as he adjusted his glasses and steph rolled her eyes.
“of course,” she sighed heavily, rubbing her temple in annoyance. “you guys okay?”
all of the boys nodded and she smiled in relief. “now, who’s excited that the summer is finally upon us on this glorious day?” she said more dramatically, making all of the boys laugh, especially bill. after she was done, she giggled a little as well, finding her terrible acting kind of hilarious.
“all i want is to just go play 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘍𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳 and not have to deal with you losers this summer,” richie said sarcastically, still chuckling slightly.
“beep beep, scumbag!” steph yelled at him playfully in a warning manner.
“sorry, m’lady!”
“seriously, richie! shut up!” eddie said, a little irritated by the bespectacled boy’s behavior. and richie fell quiet, much to their relief.
“d-d-duh-did you have a g-g-good day, steph?” bill asked. the blonde girl grinned at him because of the polite question.
bill denbrough was a tall and kind boy of thirteen, and he had a lanky build that nobody judged him for. he also had cropped brown hair and sky blue-green eyes that always brightened whenever steph was around, although she didn’t know this. he looked like your regular teenage boy in everyday society. if it hadn’t been for his stutter, that would have been considered so.
“yeah, i did,” she replied genuinely. “thanks, bill.”
“nuh-no problem,” he said.
after this, all five of them grabbed their bikes and rode away from the school. steph looked around them to make sure that they were not being followed by the bowers gang and, much to her elation, they didn’t seem to be anywhere in sight. ever since the day she befriended the boys, she grew a motherly and protective nature over them, but it wasn’t overbearing. instead, she truly did care for her boys and didn’t want them hurt, even if it was by any bullies.
she ignored the thought for now, just appreciating the bliss she was feeling as she and her best friends rode towards home on their bikes, grins planted on their faces.

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE
Tumblr media
This is an IT au based on the Lara Jean books by Jenny Han!
Marsh!Reader x [Mystery Boy]
[Prologue]
I like to save things. Nothing too big, nothing life changing. No, I like to save stupid things. The kind of things most kids stop giving a crap about after sixth grade, like their collection of porcelain animals, or report cards from the early days of elementary school. Out of everything I save, out of everything I own, really, I guess you could say that my love letters are my most prized possessions.
I keep my letters in a rosy pink, round, hatbox my mother bought from some vintage store a million years ago. They’re not letters that anyone else wrote to me. No, I’ve never gotten any of those, if you must ask. I wrote these letters myself. There’s one for every boy I’ve ever loved- so, five in all.
When I write, I let everything out. Everything I’ve ever felt about that boy is laid out in black and white, on a paper no one else will see. I pour my heart out to that paper, then I sign it, seal it, and stick it in the box. It will never see the light of day again.
They’re not love letters, in the cheesy romance movie kind of way. I write them when I want to be done with love, when I want to stop loving the boy of my infatuation. At some point, I can’t handle that all-consuming, thinking-about-him-every-hour-of-the-day kind of love anymore. When it gets to that point, I write his letter, and suddenly I’m okay again.
My letters set me free. Or at least they’re supposed to.

“Pick them up at five? You know my boss will murder me.” He tries to convince her, clearly stressed. Stanley huffs, looking at the clock. His lunch break is ending soon.
“He will not, baby! He loves you and can excuse this one time, alright?” She responds and he sighs. There's no response from Stan for a while. She takes that as a no. “Fine! I'll pick them up.” She gives in and can hear Stanley laughing into the phone. “But there's one thing you have to do for me, then. You know which one.” She teases.
“Oh, no. Please, pick something else.” He begs her, but now she laughs. “I'll—I'll paint your nails! Anything but watching that movie.”
“How dare you speak like that about my favorite thing in the whole world!” She exclaims in a theatrical voice.
“Please. Don't the painted nails sound nice?” Stan presses. She groans, but says nothing for a little while.
“Alright, fine. That's only because your friends are coming.” Y/N clarifies and Stanley chuckles.
“My one free pass! Yes!” He cheers. “I'll see you at six, then.”
“Yes, my love. See you at six.” She responds with a loving smile that turns her voice full of love, too. “I love you.”
“And I love you more.” He states it as a fact before ending the call. “Oh, goodness, am I ready for this?” Stanley asks himself.
He got a call last night from one of his best friends, Ben Hanscom. They had quite the open conversation, Stanley putting Ben on speaker as both their wives listened. Ben threw the idea of all the Losers meeting up and Y/N said they could do it at their house, the Uris household. The rest were ecstatic about the idea and Ben said he'll call up the rest of their friends to notify about this spontanious plan. They settled for half past seven, which is in only five and a half hours.
Y/N has never met Stanley's childhood friends. She heard the whole story about them when one of them, Mike Hanlon, called up Stanley while he was on vacation with Y/N and the kids. Said there was an emergency and that he needed to come home. But he couldn't. He'd finally found something good in his life, he finally had someone (now more than one) worth living for and they were together on a well-deserved vacation. Stanley couldn't leave, and Mike understood.
He's nervous about whether she'll like them, whether they'll like her. How the kids will react to his friends. Would they be scared at first? No, they'll be fine. A four year old and an eight year old aren't that afraid anymore. But what happens when Richie starts joking around? Oh, no. He's always been the joker kind, but what really loosens him up is alcohol, and with that in his system, Richie Tozier is unstoppable.
Stan decides to hope for the best and not let his nerves eat him up. He's going to see his friends! After all this time. And he was the second one after Mike who remembers everything best. He's missed them so much. At times, he could feel a physical ache in his chest just because of how much he misses his friends. Now he's about to see them in a little less than six hours. He can't wait.
Seven-fifteen. The food is ready, the table is set, the kids... are not dressed.
“Nathaniel! Come back here to Daddy.” Stan calls out, exhasparated. He holds his son's jeans in his hands, sitting down on his bed, head in hands, as well. He's been trying to get his son to calm down for at least half an hour now. He just won't. “You can't sit at a dinner with no pants, buddy.” He tries to make a point.
But Nathaniel only giggles and gets up in his in-door swing and starts swinging. Stanley sighs, clearly on the verge of giving up, but upon looking really into what his son is doing, gets an idea.
“You wanna swing? Alright, let's swing.” He says and stands up, walking over to his on and his swing. Nathaniel giggles. Stanley gently pushes the swing so Nathaniel would swing higher and watches with a mischievous smile as he does. When Nathaniel's gone quite high on the swings and has been swinging for a few minutes, at least, Stanley grabs his son and, using the swing's advantage, slips the jeans up the little boy's legs.
He squeals and laughs, pretending that it tickles him. They both are laughing, and Y/N can't tell who's laughing harder as she watches the whole ordeal from the other end of the hallway. She's even filming it on her phone, Stanley notices.
“Oh, come on! A way to torture your poor husband even more!” He calls out, but means no harm. All three of them are laughing. Stanley takes Nathaniel out of the swings, the little boy squealing more, and puts him down on the ground. “You naughty little thing!” He says to his son and pinches his nose gently. It only makes him laugh more, and he runs back to his bed. “Now put on your socks, you little maniac.” Stanley tells his son, pointing a finger at him. Nathaniel points one right back, which makes Stan smile.
He sighs as he stands up and pushes past the swings. Y/N goes back into the kitchen to finish the starters she began to make before hearing the mess of a situation in the hallway.
Stanley knocks on his daughter's door, which is partly closed, and recieves a quiet “come in” in response. “How's my little princess?” He asks, opening the door wider and walking into her room. Little Louise is sitting in front of her vanity, her fingers working on tearing up her braids. Stanley smiles wide, pushes his glasses further up his nose. Partly making sure he's not dreaming of such a beautiful daughter. “Why are you taking those out?” He asks.
Stanley walks over to where his daughter is sitting and kneels in front of her. She looks at him. “I wanted curly hair just like yours, Daddy.” She tells him and Stan smiles even wider. She pulls on one of the curls that hang over his forehead. “But my hair is just like Mommy's.” Louise then says with a frown.
“Aw, don't fret, princess. When you'll grow older, it will be just like mine.” Stanley tells her. “I promise.” He adds and winks at his daughter. She smiles. “Are you excited?”
“I think you're excited, Daddy.” She says when she's turned back to look at her reflection in the mirror.
“What makes you think that?”
“Well, I think that when I'm going to be old and meet the friends I have now, I'd be excited, too.” She tells him. Her statement makes Stanley double over with laughter. Louise doesn't really understand what her father's laughing at, but she smiles.
“So I'm old?” He finally asks. “Baby, 40 years old does not mean I'm old.”
“Yeah, but you're old-er.” She points out. She's finished with her braids and shakes her head a little so that all the hair would go back in place. Stanley watches with the most loving eyes he's ever layed upon someone. Louise stands up from the bench and Stanley finally gets to see how she's dressed.
“You look so pretty, my little princess.” He tells her. Louise reaches out to take her father's hands and he lets her, gladly. “When did mommy buy you this dress? I don't think I've seen one so beautiful before.”
“Today, while we were walking home.” Louise tells him. “That's why we were a bit late.” Stanley chuckles. “You look nice, too, Daddy.”
Stanley can admit that he's blushing. “Thanks, angel.”
The doorbell rings for the first time that evening. Stanley jumps a little because it was so sudden. Out of instinct, he looks behind him and then back at Louise.
“Wanna go meet my friends?” He asks her and she nods with a smile. Stanley stands up and lets go of only one of Louise's hands, holding the other tight in his own.
They walk into the hallway and Nathaniel joins them from his room, having heard the doorbell, too. He takes Stanley's other hand, though he is shorter than Louise and has to reach higher than his sister does.
Y/N has already opened the front door of their house when the rest of the Uris family stand in the living room. “Hi!” She greets whoever is at the door. Stan would have liked to have a surprise about who's at the door first, but hearing the cheery voice of Beverly Marsh and the, apparently, deep rumble of Ben Hanscom gave the surprise away. Another voice joins in on the greetings. Is that the Richie Tozier?
Stanley fights the emotional tears that prick his eyes. He really hadn't prepared for this moment. The moment he meets his friends. His children would be much confused if they saw their dad crying and having no explanation for it. So he only grasps their little hands tighter and braces himself to see the first two friends of the evening.
“You must be Y/N.” Beverly says and the two women embrace. “So glad to meet Stan's wife.”
“I would say we've heard a lot about you, but we've actually heard nothing.” Richie says and the four people laugh. “I'm Richie.”
“I could tell.” Y/N says, nodding. “And you're Beverly and Ben. So good to have you guys over. You're the first ones.” She says. “Come in, come in. He's already waiting for you.”
“Too anxious to meet us first, I bet.” Ben says and the voice grow louder as they near the kitchen and living room. “Left you to the task.” Y/N only laughs at Ben's statement.
Beverly and Y/N exchange small banter about what the three have brought with them, flowers, gifts, dessert, wine. But Stan doesn't hear anything when he sees Ben and Richie entering the living room. The world stops.
“Stanley!” Richie's the first to speak and he wants to run up to his long-lost best friend. But he stops once he sees two little children at each of his side. “Kids!” Is all he can get out in surprise. Ben laughs. Stanley smiles.
Stanley lets go of his kids' hands and runs up to his best friends, doing what they all want to do. “Ben.” He greets the man first. He cannot believe what he looks like now. And is that really Ben or someone else who's pretending to be him?
“Stan the man.” Ben responds. Their embrace is tight and means everything to both of them. Stanley closes his eyes, savouring the moment. “So good to see you, buddy.”
“You, too, Ben.” Stanley responds. “But is this really you? You've changed so much...” He says after the two have pulled apart. “You look like Captain America or something.”
The men laugh. “I couldn't believe it, either, at first.” Richie says. Stan looks at him and immediately hugs him, almost making them both fall over.
“Richie!” Stanley cries. His best friend. His best, best, best. His first friend, who at first he couldn't believe he could stand enough to befriend. Stanley lets himself cry with no shame, tears pouring down his cheeks and onto Richie's back.
“It's so good to see you, Stan.” Richie admits and sniffs, as well. Ben pats both their backs, wanting to join in on the hug. But he decides to make aquintance with Stanley's kids.
“Hi there.” Ben says after squatting down to their level. “I'm Ben. One of your dad's friends.” He reaches out his hand for them to shake. The little girl does it first, then her brother. Nathaniel has grown shy all of a sudden. “What are your names?”
“I'm Louise. My brother's name is Nathaniel.” The daughter speaks first, as well. Ben smiles. “It's nice to meet you, Ben.”
“Rich, where's Eddie? Is he not coming? Has something happened?” Stanley questions, eyes showing worry. Eddie was always where Richie was and it's so strange to see one without the other.
“No, no, everything's fine with him now. He'll be a bit late because of a doctor's appointment.” Richie explains. “We've got a lot to tell you, pal.” He refers to what Stanley 'missed out on', the result of Mike Hanlon's call. Stanley frowns at Richie's words. Are they mad at him for not coming when Mike called?
“Stanley, honey.” Beverly says before Uris can ask anymore questions. She embraces him and then pulls away, taking his face between her hands and looking at Stanley closely. “I'm so glad you're safe and... here.” She says, and it confuses Stan. “Your eyes have gotten darker, Stanley.” She points out. “They used to be in the color of acorns.” Stanley smiles.
“Gosh, it's so great to see you guys.” He admits and wipes his fallen tears. “After all these years.” Another doorbell ring. “I'll get that.” Stanley volunteers and walks through the kitchen, passing his wife. He looks at her and wants to say something, but she reads his mind before he can.
“Go get your friends.” She says, telling him with her eyes that she'll stay with the children and his already arrived friends. Stan nods and before he can get the door, Y/N kisses him sweetly as a confirmation of what she just told him.
Stanley opens the door and is greeted by the rest of the Losers. Looks like Kaspbrak won't be so late, after all.
“Stanley!” The three men cry out of happiness in unison. Although Bill, as always, stutters his name. They all embrace together in a group hug, patting backs and vocalising their gladness of seeing each other. They don't ever want to let go of each other.
“So glad to see you, man. I can't believe we're all here, in one piece.”
“A seventh-piece, Eddie. You're still the same, Uris. Haven't changed a bit.”
“We're s-so glad you're he-here, Stan.”
“What do you mean? You're the ones that came over.” Stanley laughs, but it's followed by a silence. “Come on, come inside. What are we waiting for?” Stanley opens the door wide enough for his three friends to come through. They've each got a bag with them.
Stanley watches his friends. How they've changed, how they've aged. How different they look. But at the same time, nothing's different about them. At the very same moment, they're the same kids he remembers 27 years ago in the meadow by the river.
“Put the bags on the counter for now.” Stanley suggests, sensing his friends' question already in the air. “Dinner's already on the table.” He announces and leads Eddie, Bill and Mike into the living room from the ktichen.
“Hey!” The rest of the losers cheer upon seeing their three friends arrived. Everyone cheers. The Losers club embrace and laugh and smile. Everyone's smiling and happy and content and excited. Stanley thinks, I've never felt happier in my life. Only if you count out the birth of his two children and his wedding, that is. But this moment is so much like the mentioned ones.
Stanley's broken out of his trance of happiness and watching his friends converse when little Louise runs up to him. He looks down at her with the happiest face she's ever seen on her Daddy. She stretches out her arms towards him, a sign for him to take her up, and he does.
He picks her up and situates Louise on his hip, her arms going around his neck to hold onto. “Are you happy, Daddy?” She asks and Stanley sobs, tears once again streaming in rivers down his face.
“Yes, princess, I'm very happy.” He answers and rests his own head against Louise's. She touches his cheeks with her small hands and wipes the fallen tears from her father's cheeks. Stanley looks at her as she does so, very happy and so emotional in the exact moment.
“Stan, you old lady, the food's growing cold!” Richie calls out to his friend, and everyone chuckles while there's a quiet “Beep-beep, Richie” from one of the Losers. Stan then looks into the living room and sees all his friends and his wife have sat down at the table.
Richie sits next to Eddie, but the comedian is already making banter with young Nathaniel to his right. Beverly across Tozier, next to Ben who's talking with his old pal Bill. The empty seat next to Beverly is meant for Louise, and she hurries to claim it, climbing down from her father's embrace. Mike sits across Bill and Y/N has sat at the end of the table where her children sit. Stanley walks over to the table and sits down at his rightful place at the other end of the table, his wife straight ahead of him.
His best friends are looking at him with cheerful and bright faces. Hopeful, excited, glad, loving... Happy. Stanley gives them a smile, the best and prettiest he can. They're all here, together in his family's house, sitting at his table. All united. Friends again.
“A toast?” Y/N proposes, raising an eyebrow and smiling at her husband. Stanley nods and sniffs. The Losers and the Urises all raise a glass, the kids' glasses filled with black currant juice so that they wouldn't be left out, and hold them in the air as Stanley starts to speak.
“I... I didn't prepare anything.” He admits and his friends understand. How could he be prepared for this wonderful, breathtaking event ever in his life? “I honestly never thought I'd see you guys again. I never thought I'd see something like this in my whole life.” Stanley says. “Never thought this day would come. But I so hoped. And I missed all of you so much.” His wife offers Stanley a comforting smile, an encouraging one, as well. She sees how happy and thankful he is to be once again with his childhood friends. Maybe she doesn't know it, but Y/N sees how much they mean to him, how much they have always meant to him.
“I presumed, realistically, that something must have happened to each of us. That maybe we'd truly never see each other again. Never be the Losers Club again. Never see each of us grow up and do what we always wanted to, make our childhood dreams come true. Maybe I was just... afraid that something might happen to us, and I believed it.
“But I realised with time that you cannot believe in fear. It's fictional and, quite frankly, a disease. If you live your life in fear, you don't get to have the things we all have now. At least the things I do have.” He adds and his friends all laugh. “So, I propose a toast to us all. Grown-up Losers. A toast to see each other as often as possible and keep the bond stronger than ever.” Stanley finishes and needs to wipe his nose again. “To the Losers Club! And the big family we grow to be!”
“To The Losers Club and the big family we grow to be!” Everyone repeats and clinks their glasses together. Together is what they were made to be.

The Losers Club + Singing
Warnings: Swearing (shocker), very brief mentions of Bev’s asshole father being an asshole, light homophobia and racism
Requested: Not implicitly
Author’s Note: This got real long so I’m just going to put it under the cut (like usual) but I really enjoyed writing this! I’m working on part 4 of YWISC, I promise, but until then, take these peace offering headcanons. *shoves this post towards you and runs*
Tumblr media
((i’m so excited for this one!!))
🎶 ben 🎶
ben only sings if he’s 100% certain he’s alone
he won’t even sing in front of his mother, that’s how embarrassed he is
one time, bev caught him singing new kids on the block and he was red for a solid 20 minutes
she subtly drops hints around the other losers for a while just to see how red ben could get
his voice is decent, but there are songs he can totally nail if he tries and it sounds amazing
when he was little he was in his church’s children’s choir
he secretly wants to be able to serenade bev like in all the musicals his aunt is so fond of
he was dared once to sing karaoke at the restaurant the losers went to
he absolutely refused to go onto the stage alone
so mike went with him and didn’t take it seriously
ben thought it was hilarious so he went along with it and just sang
when he gets his own car at the end of sophomore year, he turns up the music he listens to as loud as it can go while he sings
only if he’s alone, of course
when he’s with his friends, he lets them pick so he doesn’t have to hear the comments about his music tastes
he likes to sing in different languages because it presents a challenge and he wants to be fluent in a ton of different language
like honestly, he gets super into k-pop when it becomes popular
but his favorite languages to sing in are italian and french because they sound pretty (romance languages ya know)
when he gets into a new band, he gets into a new band and learns literally every word to every song even if it’s not his favorite
🎶 bev 🎶
bev can’t sing for shit but that doesn’t stop her
the boys: please stop, i beg of you
bev: la la la i can’t fucking hear you
however ~however~ she can rap like nobody’s business
when hamilton comes out, she knows that shit better than lin-manuel miranda himself
she can do the entirety of guns and ships in her sleep
when her and richie go smoking, they open all the doors of richie’s car and turn up their music full blast
they scream all the lyrics and dissolve into fits of giggles
bev is actually a little self-conscious about her voice
her father always made her sing with him when she was little
and he would say shit like “mmm could be better” or “wow that was awful”
it actually hurts a little when the boys make fun of her but they always reassure her they’re joking
when she goes to concerts, she all but screams the words to the songs and the people around her are doing the same thing so she feels right at home
beverly fucking marsh, ladies and gents, gets up on stage during the high school talent show with one of the choirs every single year and raps while they sing
everyone looks forward to it
freshman year, she did the rap parts of Magic
sophomore year, she did the rap parts of Stereo Hearts
junior year, she did the whole song from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
senior year, she did the rap parts of Alexander Hamilton
when she graduates from college with her education degree, the first teaching job she gets, she helps her kids learn the material through rap
all the kids love her because she makes learning fun and easy to remember
when she and ben go to homecoming together their junior year, she sings softly under her breath to one of the slow songs
and she’s actually trying
like she practiced
and ben is beyond impressed
“wow, bev, that’s beautiful”
and she blushes but won’t say anything
at the graduation party, she and the losers have, she gets a little tipsy after the adults leave and sings the highest, loudest song she can
it sounds phenomenal
the guys are flabbergasted
richie: we should get you drunk more often, bevvie. you could win tv show contests with that voice.
bev: shut the fuck up, trashmouth.
when she has her first kid, she takes three vocal lessons so she can sing lullabies to them
because she wants them to her voice
she gets super sappy when the baby smiles after she sings
she may or may not have cried
🎶 bill  🎶
how does one describe the singing voice william “big bill” denbrough
the answer is: you can’t, you tried, you failed
when he sings, he shouts
like there is very little musicality when he tries to sing
he gives bev a run for her money when they go to concerts
he’s the type of person who, because he is a writer, writes his own songs
and they’re really good, but he can’t sing them correctly
when georgie was little, he would always want bill to sing him to sleep at night and his parents don’t get it because bill’s voice isn’t soothing or sleep-inducing in any way
at church, his parents have to quiet him down because the picky old ladies look scandalized he’s singing so loudly during mass
georgie just grabs his hand and sings loudly with him bc big brother idolization, ya know?
(he may or may not stick his tongue out at the old women when his parents aren’t looking to stick up for his brother)
he never stutters when he sings and richie thinks this helps him learn to speak without stuttering
stan starts picking up on it and will quietly sing with bill when he feels overwhelmed and can’t get his words out
bill is amazing at lip-syncing
the losers will all be listening to music and suddenly they look at bill who’s like in the zone and mouthing every word
then a cyndi lauper song comes on and if you didn’t know any better, it would seem like her voice was coming out of his mouth
it freaks mike out
bill auditions for a musical (the first and last) in college and the people listening to him are like “why is he screaming at us?” and defer him to stage crew where he finds out he can wield a nail gun like nobody’s business
he wants to privately serenade stan on one of their dates and has richie help him prep for it
richie teaches him simple chords on his guitar and lets bill borrow it for the evening, coaching him to sing softly
bill sings “i’m yours” and stan is smiling so widely his cheeks hurt but he can’t stop
“did you like it?” bill asks when he’s done, not looking up
“like it? i love it!” stan just snuggles up next to him for the rest of their date (and bill thanks richie a million times later)
when he works out, he always listens to music and can be heard trying to sing along under his breath (and failing) by all the employees and other patrons
when he leaves whistling whatever he had just been listening to, the poor woman next to him sighs in relief
🎶 eddie 🎶
eddie’s voice is unnaturally high for a boy but he loves it anyway (think mitch from pentatonix)
he joined as many school choirs as he could during middle and high school and totally was captain of the tenor 1s in his senior year
unironically calls the other tenor 1s his children
dude has the range of a opera singer
it’s more comfortable to sing in the higher end of his range but he can do the equivalent of a singing death drop and slide all the way from a b5 to a g3
always gets the solos when competing because he has such an impressive range
starts an a cappella group his freshman year of high school and convinces stan to join (we’ll talk more about that later)
they get so good, they start to do travel competitions
it’s probably the most diverse group at derry high because literally everyone that has a good voice is welcome to audition
a kid named taylor helps eddie arrange music and choreography even though they’re in a wheelchair
sings duets with his mom in the car because it’s the only time that they seem to get along without arguing
their go-to song is “halo” by beyonce
eddie’s mom is so highkey proud of her son and his abilities that most of the time she’ll just sit back and listen while one of them is driving until eddie says “ it’s supposed to be a duet, mom”
loves to vibrato it up because he’s super dramatic when he sings literally anything
he gets teased because singing and dancing in organized choirs is “gay” according to the bowers gang
ok one time, bowers made fun of him and the rest of the tenors and eddie just straight up decked him before calmly getting on the bus to go wherever they were competing
the tenors (and the bases) were like “shit dude you okay?”
and eddie says “no one makes fun of my kids” while shaking out his hand
and the tenors kind of crowd around him for a hug because they love their mom captain
he sings the national anthem a lot at high school games but one time, he was invited to sing it at a red sox game in boston and he freaked out
richie: you’ve sung this shit like a million times. all that’s changed is the number of people listening to your beautiful voice. now go out there and make hot baseball players fall in love with you.
eddie: *blushing* shut the fuck up.
sings lullabies to literally everyone and it soothes them so much
richie is falling asleep on his lap? lullaby
stan is having an anxiety attack? lullaby
bill is freaking about his stutter? lullaby
mike is overwhelmed by the amount of work on his plate? lullaby
ben has a nightmare? lullaby
bev is crying about her father? lullaby
needless to say it works wonders
🎶 mike 🎶
has such a low voice and it drives everyone nuts
he has all the girls (and some guys- mostly richie) salivating after him when he sings once at a high school talent show
can harmonize with anything like a song will just be on the radio and he’ll drop in a perfect lower harmony that just works
cantors at mass on sundays sometimes and usually sings with the choir
he has a real knack for the baptist religious music and his voice is just perfect for it
his college did a production of “the drowsy chaperone” (A/N: great show) and when he tried out in a spur of the moment decision, he got the part of george
he killed it
also, he learned a tap number with the actor who played robert and the losers were thoroughly impressed
ben: i didn’t know he could move like that
bev: *shouting* that’s my son!
stan: *mortified* shh!
when mike becomes the derry librarian, he starts a story time for the little kids and when there’s music in the books, he’ll sing
a little girl only comes on days when he sings and that amuses him to no end
he plays classical music through the loudspeakers when he closes up the library because it gets lonely, you know, and tries to sing all the instrumental parts with his voice
he does the best with cello parts
one time, someone came in late and he didn’t even realize it and they started to clap
he now locks the door before he starts to clean up
LOVES karaoke and always drags his friends to bars and forces them to sing with him
tries out once for a really prestigious travel choir who do lots of shows in europe because they were looking for a bass
the snooty old man in charge of auditioning says “we don’t take your kind here”
and stan is livid when mike tells him about it
stan: hypothetically, if you told me their names and i went to their houses, what would happen if i killed them?
richie: jesus, stanny, remind me not to get on your bad side.
sings with eddie at ben and bev’s wedding and makes them cry tears of joy while they’re doing their first dance
mike’s twin daughters maisie and charlotte clearly have the same vocal skills as their dad and they sing together while they get ready for school
mike’s wife, louisa, has plenty of videos on her phone of them trying to sing around their toothbrushes
🎶 richie 🎶
richie tozier, my friends, is a wonder when it comes to singing
typically, he doesn’t try too hard and goofs off with silly songs
sings shit like “never gonna give you up” and “barbie girl” unironically
stan is neverendingly exhausted by it
stan: anything but blue again, please
when he applies himself, he drives people wild with his raspy, amazing voice
and by people, i mean eddie
he taught himself to play guitar when he was 12 and then when nobody would sing with him, he did it himself
in a stroke of bad decision making on the school faculty’s part, they allowed him to be the announcer at a football game and he sings all the announcements- all of them
richie: *singing* number 27 (bill) looking feisty tonight
richie: *still singing* when will the quarterback (mike) love me?
principal: that is quite enough
richie: *singing some more* you can’t do that (whole stadium claps)
every once in a while (quite often) when richie stayed over at the denbroughs, georgie would ask him to sing with his brother so that his lullaby could be a duet
for just a year and one year only, richie is in eddie’s a cappella group
he gets lovingly kicked out because he distracts not only eddie but a lot of the others in the group because he’s a really great singer when he tries
but he helped make a killer arrangement of feel again that they still use to compete even after eddie graduates
is actually very knowledgeable about music theory because it was always part of the youtube videos he watched when he was learning guitar
richie: you know, i think this would sound better with a major third chord instead of this minor seventh
mike: what
richie: what
mike: i have no damn idea what you just said
joins a band as lead singer and guitarist when he gets to college and gets really popular locally because of his “just got out of someone else’s bed” voice
you know those songs bill writes? yeah half of them are with help from richie
they start a youtube channel anonymously and sing them as duets with richie’s soft guitar music (think jem and the holograms)
they have a really niche cult following, some of whom try to figure out who they are, but mostly just to enjoy the music
georgie claims it’s his influence from lullaby time when he was younger (and the boys humor him)
🎶 stan 🎶
woo boy, where to even begin with stan?
he never sings in public and the times that he does sing are so few and far between it’s like a cryptid sighting
bev: i once heard stan singing in the shower after we all went swimming in the quarry
the rest of the losers: bullSHIT
but ~buuuuuUUuUUUtttt~ this boy has the voice of a god and he uses it like a weapon
stan: *doesn’t want to do something*
stan: *singing* billy, you know how much i love you right?
bill: *totally taken aback* not fair
he once sang in the talent show because it was his senior year (and he lost a bet to richie)
he decided to sing a sappy love song that was popular and the whole auditorium was so stunned it took them a full thirty seconds to give him a standing ovation once he finished
this boy is the only person in the losers club who can do any p!atd song, like any of them, and do an accurate impression of brenden urie
it’s a little scary how close their voices sound
his mother teaches him the hebrew prayers they sing during shabbat and sometimes the losers will catch him singing them when he’s not paying attention
he got tipsy once while he was out with bev and eddie and sang a super raunchy song on stage during a karaoke night and totally crushed the hell out of it
nobody believes that this happened
not even stan supposedly
bev and eddie: i swear on my life
mike: over my dead body did this happen
ben: yeah no way
stan: *winks at bev and eddie*
when he and bill move in together, stan will sing to bill when he thinks bill is asleep
stan will run his fingers through bill’s hair and sing something like blackbird and bill is just... goosebumps everywhere
stan sometimes knows bill is awake by the way his breathing hitches and keeps going because bill is the only person he trusts to be totally unafraid in front of
he can hit high notes like nobody’s business but only if he’s taken a shot of hard liquor recently
at the graduation party, he and eddie got into a high-note-off
a video exists somewhere on ben’s phone of the two just going at it
richie can be heard in the background just losing his fucking mind
stan never accepts solos when he’s part of eddie’s a cappella group and nobody understand why (again voice of a god)
there was a competition when eddie was getting over laryngitis and the only person who knew his solos were (drum roll, please) stan!
needless to say, they blew the judges away and won first place
~ ~ ~
There you are! I hope you enjoyed this little treat while I work on part 4 of you were in screaming color (which I have recently edited chapter 1 of and put it on ao3 here). Got a request? Submit one here. See my masterlist here.

It Chapter Two: ** out of 5
Tumblr media
Two years after Pennywise the Dancing Clown scared the shit out of audiences and the children of 2017’s It, he returns to terrorize the town of Derry, Maine in the follow-up, simply titled It Chapter Two. In 1990, ABC released a two-part TV miniseries based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel with Tim Curry as Pennywise. As that series was split into two parts, so too is the film adaptation, with the second half following the adult versions of the kids from the original.
Not known for being succinct, King has written a novel almost every year for nearly a half-century, many of which make good substitutes for a blunt weapon. With the novel It being more than 1100 pages, the use of two parts to tell the story is understandable. Yet, as opposed to Chapter One, a chilling, poignant and well-paced addition to the horror renaissance of the 2010s, Chapter Two, clocking in at a whopping 169 minutes, is a grueling and redundant scarefest that adds little to the overall work.
With its epic scale, grandiose score and CGI-laden action sequences, this movie from director Andy Muschietti and writer Gary Dauberman feels more like a superhero flick, hinted at in the original—especially the climactic clown battle—but on full display here.
As you may recall, the first entry followed a group of losers, appropriately named ‘The Losers’ Club’, who were terrorized by bullies, parents and an entity referred to as ‘It’ which took the form of their greatest fears but mostly Pennywise the Clown (Bill Skarsgård, still epitomizing creepy and evil). This entity awakens every 27 years to feed on the children of Derry before returning to ‘hibernation’. When last we saw the kids, they had just mustered enough courage to defeat Pennywise. Before parting ways, they made one of the worst pacts in the history of pacts and promised to return to Derry if It ever returned. Good idea.
Tumblr media
Horrible idea. It’s now 27 years later and It has definitely returned, as shown in a rather off-putting prelude involving a gay couple and a group of @$%&heads that goes from bad to tragic to horrific. It’s Mike Hanlon (Isaiah Mustafa), the only Loser who hasn’t left Derry, who warns the others and calls them back to their hometown. We’re then given a stereotypical sequence with each character receiving ‘the call’ from Mike as if Professor Xavier was recruiting a new team of X-Men.
Speaking of Xavier, James McAvoy plays Bill Denbrough, the de facto leader of the group, still suffering from a stutter; Jessica Chastain plays the tomboy Beverly Marsh, formerly abused by her father, currently abused by her husband; and the dynamic Bill Hader plays the foul-mouthed Richie Tozier. Joining them are Jay Ryan as Ben Hanscom, a loser in more than one way, having gone from a pudgy kid to a fit adult; James Ransone as Eddie Kaspbrak, the fidgety hypochondriac; and Andy Bean as Stanley Uris, the one who’s hard to describe save for his Judaism.
If you noticed a stark imbalance between the first few actors and the last few, you’re not alone. It’s rather jarring to see three super stars play alongside relative unknowns. That’s not to say you must be famous to be a good actor or be cast in certain roles, but each character here has a roughly equal part. The visual is distracting and might help explain the lack of chemistry.
Tumblr media
Even so, this cast is unquestionably more talented than that of the typical horror film (although, that’s changing as of late). Chastain is in the top tier of Hollywood actresses right now and Hader has become one of the most versatile performers around in both comedy and drama, yet most of the actors seem uncomfortable in their roles. It’s as if they’re struggling to determine just how much their characters have matured but either don’t quite succeed or try to mimic their adolescent selves too much (especially Ransone), making them seem like kids in adult bodies rather than former children grown up.
With an almost three hour run time, the plot is stretched as thin as can be. At one point, each of our heroes must find a personal item from their past for a ritual meant to defeat It for good, which Mike learned from the Shokopiwah Native American tribe…as one does. This leads to an exhausting and repetitive second act in which the characters separate and face their unique fears alone. We’re treated to some neat visuals, for sure, but each sequence follows the exact same pattern culminatinug in a series of jump scares. It’s wash, rinse, repeat before moving on to the next character. Yes, it is scary, and you will jump, but that thrilling rush becomes an unrelenting nightmare.
On the other hand, the film makers often sabotage the horror in scenes with their liberal use of CGI. Too often something pops up for a big scare only to reveal its digital artifice, a tool that makes the movements unnatural and the facial expressions goofy, removing you from the film’s eerie reality. There’s a perfectly staged scene, brimming with suspense, in which Beverley visits her old home, currently occupied by an elderly woman. The tension builds at a slow, delightfully nerve-wracking pace that leads to the creepiest shots of the film. And then, like the air from a popped balloon, all that tension is dispersed instantaneously in a flurry of computer effects.
Tumblr media
The most compelling part of the film is actually its last 15 minutes or so, following the climactic ‘super villain battle’. The warmth and comradery among the protagonists remind us of what made Chapter One so intriguing. Here, they get lost in one extravagant set piece after another, but, in the end, we’re given one final chance to care about them again. After surviving a seemingly never-ending gauntlet of insanity, at least we’re afforded the satisfaction of knowing it wasn’t all for nothing. But, for the most part, It Chapter Two is a discordant mixture of manic horror with ill-timed humour that drags in the middle like Pennywise’s bottom lip, right before he bears his razor-sharp teeth for yet another jump scare. There’s no shortage of jump scares.

Summary:
Eddie and Richie embark on the most terrifying experience of all—parenthood. Or, the author desperately needed a domestic, family fix-it for Richie and Eddie and it turned into a much longer, angstier exploration than I expected.
Chapter X: Richie and Eddie are taught a valuable lesson by their eldest daughter.
Tumblr media
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
Eddie was silent for a long moment and Richie worried he was about to call the whole thing off when he suddenly nodded once. Richie exhaled a shaking breath.
“Okay,” he said and dialed the number on his phone. It rang several times, both men holding their breath, until a generic voicemail message began speaking. “Shit.”
Richie hung up.
“That’s definitely the right number?” Eddie asked.
“Yeah. Should we try again later?”
Eddie shrugged.
“You could leave a message, I guess,” he muttered. “I still feel weird about this. Maybe we should do a background check on this guy.”
“We’re not inviting him to our house, Eds.”
“Yeah, but people can find things pretty easily nowadays.” Eddie sighed. “Has Tess mentioned anything to you about this...shine thing lately?”
Richie shook his head.
“She’s been pretty normal,” he said. “She did cry the other day when you left for work but I think that’s because she didn’t sleep well the night before.”
Eddie ran a hand through his hair.
“And why’s it called a shine?” he muttered to himself. “What the hell does that mean?”
Richie shrugged.
“Sounds cooler than just saying, I have weirdass powers I can’t explain,” he offered.
Eddie sighed and shook his head.
“Let’s wait a while and then we’ll try calling him again,” he said. He made as if to leave the room when he paused suddenly. He turned back to his husband. “The other day, when you had her show me her...shine...she said she didn’t want to because she didn’t want to hurt my feelings. Do you know why she said that?”
Richie frowned and shook his head.
“I figured it was just because you’re her favorite,” he admitted.
“Shut up, she doesn’t have a favorite,” Eddie replied tiredly. “You gotta get that shit out of your head.”
“I know, I know, I’m just kidding,” Richie said, sounding like he was definitely not kidding.
Eddie leaned down and kissed him gently.
“You’re too old to let your self-confidence be dictated by a four-year-old,” he murmured.
“Hey, I accept the fact that I’m second-choice, Eds.”
“Well, you’re first choice for me, dipshit.”
Richie wanted to crack a joke about technically being his second what with Myra being there first but he was smart enough to keep his mouth shut and enjoyed Eddie’s kisses.
Laundry was one of the few chores that Richie actually enjoyed. Aside from the occasional pukefest (he had learned early into parenthood that kids apparently can only puke in the messiest, Regan-in-The-Exorcist-style manner), it wasn’t that gross, and it was therapeutic to see a full hamper emptied and neatly folded clothes on the bed, ready to be put away. Plus, the smell of freshly done laundry was one of the best smells in the world and he could always convince one of the girls to help him with folding—so long as he put the TV on as they did so.
He was carrying a bag of freshly done laundry down the hall, wondering if Tess would let him choose what to watch as they folded when he heard hushed voices from her room. He paused. Now, little kids did tend to speak aloud to themselves, especially when playing, but this sounded...different.
He gently placed the bag of laundry on the floor and took a tentative step closer to Tess’s door, which was slightly ajar. Concentrating, he could just make out Tess’s young voice, speaking excitedly to no one. Holding his breath, Richie took another quiet step closer and listened carefully.
“I know,” Tess said happily, “I saw. And I’m getting better at it.”
Richie frowned. No one was responding and unless someone had managed to break in and not set off their house alarms, he and his daughter were alone in the house. And Tess, like Lydia, always provided multiple voices when playing alone with their dolls. Now, she fell silent, as if listening to a response only she could hear.
“I know,” she repeated, “thank you. I’m doing so good.” She suddenly laughed. “That’s silly, Abra!”
Breathless and with his heart pounding, Richie rushed towards the door and abruptly pushed it open. Tess jumped, startled.
“Tess?” he asked, breathlessly.
She suddenly looked around her room and pouted.
“Papa, you made Abracadabra go away!” she exclaimed sadly.
“I did?” Richie said, gazing around himself. Her room looked the same as always. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” she shrugged. She lifted her coloring book and showed him the page she was working on. “Like it?”
“Yeah, great job,” he offered gently. He sat beside her on her bed and tried to decide how best to ask. “So...you were just talking to Abracadabra?”
“Uh-huh,” Tess replied, stretching out on her bed and flipping to a fresh page to color.
“What did...what did you guys talk about?” he asked casually.
She shrugged.
“Stuff.”
“What kinda stuff?”
“Ummm,” she said, “school and my shine and stuff.”
Richie nodded. Tess reached up to him with a crayon. He smiled, warmed by her natural kindness, and took it, leaning over to color with her. They were both silent for a while, content to merely color the page. Richie swallowed before continuing, “So, um, what does Abracadabra look like?”
“Like a girl,” Tess replied, selecting another crayon.
“A girl like you? Your age, I mean?”
She shook her head.
“No, bigger,” she said.
“Like Lydia?”
“No, bigger, I think.”
“A grown-up?”
Tess furrowed her little face before shaking her head again.
“Okay,” Richie said. “And she’s nice to you?”
“Oh yeah,” Tess replied, smiling, “she’s my friend.”
“Good, that’s good,” Richie replied. He fell silent and watched his daughter color happily. “You know you can tell me anything, right?”
She nodded.
“Yep.”
“Hey,” he said gently and, with his free hand, tenderly lifted her chin so her eyes met his, “I mean it. You never have to be afraid to tell me or you Dad anything. We love you no matter what.”
“I know,” Tess replied, a mildly confused look on her face.
Richie gazed at her for a long moment before nodding.
“Alright, good,” he said. “You wanna help me fold the laundry?”
“Can we watch Wizard of Oz, too?”
Richie huffed a laugh.
“Yeah, kiddo, come on.”
Richie placed the last folded washcloth on the towering pile of laundry and leaned back. He reached down and reclined in his seat, once again grateful that he had convinced Eddie to spring for the reclining couch last year (though Eddie had insisted they were for old people). Once he was comfortable, he lifted his arm and Tess snuggled up against him, her arm thrown around his middle.
She sighed happily.
“You good, kid?” Richie asked.
“Uh-huh,” she said. She squeezed her arm around him. “I like this.”
“I like this, too,” Richie replied, his heart overflowing with love. She’s finally warming up to me, he thought.
“Yeah,” Tess said. “This is comfy. You’re soft.”
That startled a laugh out of Richie.
“I’m soft?” he repeated, glancing down at his daughter.
“Yeah,” she said. “I like it. Makes you comfy.”
Richie grinned.
“So I shouldn’t try to lose weight and get muscles?” he asked playfully.
Tess looked up at him, frowning.
“No way,” she said quickly.
Richie laughed and leaned down to kiss his daughter on the top of her curls.
“I love you, kiddo,” he said gently.
“Love you, too,” she replied, then brought her finger to her lips. “Shh.”
“Oh, yeah, sorry, you’re right,” Richie said and turned back to the TV, where Glinda was singing. Richie wondered how many times he had watched this movie since adopting Tess but figured it was a lost cause. Well, at least it was better than most of the crap they call family films today.
Dorothy and the Scarecrow had only just met the Tin Man when the front door opened.
“We’re home,” Eddie called.
“In here,” Richie replied. Tess cuddled in closer against him.
Both Eddie and Lydia entered the living room, Lydia rushing ahead and breathless.
“Papa, I—ugh, this movie again?” she groaned.
“Tess helped me with the laundry so she got to pick what to watch,” Richie explained.
Lydia rolled her eyes. “We watch this movie all the time,” she pointed out.
“Lyds, I thought you were going to tell everyone what you got today at gymnastics,” Eddie said, trying to get her back on track.
“What’d you get?” Richie asked.
“Shh!” Tess hushed.
Lydia pouted as she glared at her sister. Richie sighed and picked up the remote, pausing the movie.
“Hey!” Tess exclaimed.
“Your sister has something to tell us,” Eddie said, raising an eyebrow at Tess, which only resulted in her pouting, too. “Go on, Lyds.”
Lydia, still a slight frown on her face, opened her rainbow tote bag and pulled out a colorful piece of paper. She held it out for her father and sister to see.
“What’s this?” Richie asked, leaning over as he read it.
“Says I’m the best listener,” Lydia mumbled, no longer excited.
“And most improved,” Eddie said.
“Hey, that’s great, kiddo,” Richie said happily. “You’re gonna be the next Simone Biles. Or even better than her. Not that it’s a competition or anything but...you know.”
Lydia smiled shyly and shrugged.
“Can we put the movie back on now?” Tess asked.
“How about you say congrats to your sister first?” Eddie offered.
She turned towards her sister.
“Congrats, movie now please,” she said quickly.
Lydia’s smiled disappeared. She turned towards Eddie.
“I told you she wouldn’t care,” she exclaimed. “No one cares!”
“Hang on, sweetheart, we all care,” Eddie said, reaching out towards her.
“Yeah, that’s awesome,” Richie insisted. “Tess is just being fussy.”
“Am not,” Tess shot back, annoyed at the insinuation.
“No, she’s being a brat,” Lydia declared.
“Lydia,” Eddie said firmly, “that was unnecessary. Your sister isn’t a brat. Apologize.”
“No,” she replied, suddenly sounding very near tears. “It’s not fair. She is so a brat because you guys love her more than you love me!”
Both men blinked at her in shock and Lydia clearly took their silence as confirmation because she continued, “You only care about Tess and her stupid shine thing. It’s just not fair! I’m special, too!”
“Of course, you are—”
“And she is so a brat, a big one!”
“Am not!” Tess insisted, now thoroughly riled up.
“Are so,” Lydia replied. She pointed at her sister, curled up against Richie. “You’re a big brat and Daddy only loves you because of your shine. That’s it!”
Tess instantly burst into tears, hiding her face against her father’s shirt and wailing. Lydia blinked and, before either of her fathers even had the chance to catch up to what just happened, ran out of the room, down the hall, and slammed the door of her bedroom closed.
Richie and Eddie stared at one another.
Over Tess’s head, Richie mouthed the words, “What the fuck?”
“Okay, so how do we handle this?” Eddie asked, his hands flying as he paced around the living room.
“How am I supposed to know?” Richie asked.
“You have sisters,” Eddie pointed out. “Wait, call your sister. See how she deals with shit like this with her kids.”
Richie sighed and glanced down at their youngest daughter, asleep on the couch. After a thoroughly intense crying session, only calmed down by both her fathers assuring her she was not a brat and they loved her equally and deeply, Tess had done the helpful thing and passed out. Frankly, Richie thought that most of the world’s problems could be solved by naps but they still had a pissed off Lydia to deal with and she was not one for naps.
“I think we need to talk to her together,” he offered.
“And say what to her?”
“I don’t know, that we love her?”
Eddie paused and ran a hand through his hair.
“I think we need to punish her for flying off the handle like that,” he said.
“Well, Tess kinda was being a brat,” Richie observed, wincing when Eddie shot him a disdainful look. “But yeah, okay, name-calling is a punishable offense.”
Eddie sighed, his shoulders slumped.
“Maybe if we can just get them to apologize to one another,” he murmured.
“Perfect, no punishments necessary,” Richie said, standing from the couch, careful to not disturb his sleeping daughter. “Come on, we’re in this together.”
“What, right now?” Eddie asked, wide-eyed.
“No, let’s keep our daughter in her room for a week, see how it goes,” Richie replied. “Yes, right now. Don’t be a baby.”
“Hey, no name-calling,” Eddie shot back. “She clearly learned that behavior from you.”
“Yeah, like you’ve never called me names,” Richie said, rolling his eyes. “You barely call me Richie.”
Eddie looked as if he was about to reply but thought better of it. He merely scowled as he followed his husband down the hall. After a moment’s hesitation, Richie knocked on Lydia’s bedroom door.
“Lyds, we’re gonna come in, okay?” he said gently. “We gotta talk.”
“I don’t wanna,” came the muffled reply.
“Well, that’s too bad,” Richie sighed. “We’re coming in.”
“But it’s my room!”
Richie couldn’t help it. He smiled.
“I tried that line with my parents many times,” he said as he twisted the doorknob. “It didn’t work in the 80s and it won’t work now.”
He opened the door and he and Eddie gazed at their daughter, sitting on her bed with a tear-stained face. Her arms crossed over her chest and her bag and its contents spilled across the floor. Richie felt oddly small in front of her angry, disappointed stare. Luckily, Eddie—already familiar with staring angrily and disappointedly—stepped up to the plate.
“Lydia,” he said gently, slowly walking towards her, “I know you were hurt but you can’t call your sister a brat.”
Lydia huffed and looked away.
“Look, she was wrong, too, and once she wakes up, we’re going to talk to her,” he said quickly, “but she’s still just a little kid. She doesn’t always know better.”
“That’s not fair,” Lydia muttered.
“I know,” Richie replied, rubbing his neck as he remembered his own tear-filled arguments with his sisters growing up. “I have a big and a little sister. Growing up, nothing seemed fair.”
Lydia glanced at him but quickly looked away, tightening her arms across her chest. Richie stepped towards her and sat beside her on the bed.
“Look, kid, it’s not easy being the older sister, I get that,” he offered. “And I know this family has been a bit...focused on Tess for the last few months but that’s just because we need to make sure you’re both safe and healthy. Not because we love one of you more.”
Lydia wiped at her eyes and sniffed.
“But sometimes,” she whimpered, “sometimes it’s like you guys don’t even know I’m here.”
Richie had had his heart broken several times in his life and each time he had thought it was the worst feeling in the world. Now, as he gazed at his daughter wiping away her tears, he knew all those other times had been bullshit. He fell silent, unable to put his troubled thoughts into words.
“Lydia, you’re our first born,” Eddie said, crouching down in front of her. “You think we’d ever overlook or forget you? Do you know how important you are to us? To this family?” Lydia hesitated before shrugging. “Your dad, sister, and I would be lost without you,” Eddie stated firmly, taking her hand.
Richie stared at the two of them, awed. Maybe it wasn’t Bill who had the way with words.
Lydia sniffed again and smiled softly.
“So we’re sorry if we ever made you feel that way,” Eddie continued. “But you need to say you’re sorry to your sister, too. And we’ll make sure she apologizes to you, too.”
“Okay,” Lydia sighed. “‘M sorry.”
Eddie stood and leaned down to kiss her on her forehead.
“Clean up your bag and come into the kitchen for lunch,” he said. “Rich, wanna help me?”
Richie blinked, stood, and followed his husband out to the kitchen.
“You handled that like a fucking champ today.”
Eddie glanced up as he tapped at his tablet.
“What?” he murmured.
“With Tess and Lydia,” Richie clarified, putting away their laundry in their drawers. “You knew just want to say to Lyds. I fucking froze.”
“You didn’t freeze,” Eddie replied. “You were good with her, too.”
Richie shrugged.
“I looked at her and just couldn’t...couldn’t find the words,” he sighed. “It was like looking at myself as a kid and I couldn’t even say anything.”
“Richie,” Eddie said, lowering his tablet and gazing at his husband, “you did good. You’re too hard on yourself.”
“I don’t know,” Riche mumbled. He looked over at Eddie and smiled gently. “Remember how nervous you were back when we first started looking into adoption? Look at you now. Fucking father of the year.”
Eddie rolled his eyes and smiled.
“You’re overreacting,” he said, shaking his head. After a few moments’ silence, he glanced up at Richie. “What are you staring at?”
“You, dipshit,” Richie replied, grinning.
“I thought we said no name-calling,” Eddie shot back, a smirk on his face.
“For the girls, yes,” Richie answered, walking over towards Eddie. He took his husband’s face in his hands and kissed him deeply. Eddie moaned softly against his lips and Richie was just about to move his hands to his waist when something started buzzing. “Fuck, is that your phone or mine?”
“Yours,” Eddie sighed. “Over on the bureau.”
“Ugh.”
Richie got up and hurried across the room.
“Whoever it is, tell them it’s after 9pm and we don’t take calls now,” Eddie said.
Richie grasped the phone and lifted it, his stomach clenching when he saw the unsaved New Hampshire number on the screen. He stared at it as it buzzed in his hand.
“Who is it?” Eddie asked.
Richie looked up at his husband, his hair disheveled and his face so sweet and inviting.
“No one,” Richie replied and placed the phone back down before returning to Eddie.

IT Chapter Two: Every Returning Character From The First Movie
Tumblr media
Which IT Chapter One characters are returning for IT Chapter Two? Both films from New Line Cinema are based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT - though the book has been split into two installments - and directed by filmmaker Andy Muschietti.
Released in September 2017, IT Chapter One follows the experiences of several kids in Derry, Maine. The storyline begins in 1988, as the self-proclaimed Losers' Club cope with personal issues while investigating a mysterious being they label as It. The kids ultimately discover that It returns every 27 years to feed on the fears of Derry locals. Incidentally, IT Chapter Two picks up the storyline in 2016, as the Losers' Club reunites and decides to face their childhood trauma one last time.

IT Chapter Two features many returning characters for two separate timelines - both the children from the first movie and their new adult counterparts are starring in the film. Here’s a complete list of every major IT Chapter One character returning for IT Chapter Two.
It Aka Pennywise The Dancing Clown
Tumblr media
Portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, this character is the central villain of the IT story. Pennywise embodies all the fear that children grapple with during their formative years, which means that It can take on various forms, depending on the situation. Pennywise speaks like a normal clown at times but transforms his appearance to shock and terrify his victims. IT Chapter One begins with Pennywise luring and killing a young Derry resident, Georgie Denbrough.
Skarsgård has previously appeared in feature films like Atomic Blonde, Assassination Nation, and Deadpool 2. He also portrayed Henry Deaver aka The Kid in Hulu’s Castle Rock season 1.
Bill Denbrough
Tumblr media
Jaeden Martell reprises his role as Bill Denbrough from IT Chapter One. James McAvoy will portray the 2016 version in IT Chapter Two. In the ‘80s narrative, Bill stutters and struggles with his brother Georgie’s disappearance. Like other Losers' Club members, Bill clashes with his father, and vows to keep the gang together. As an adult, he’s become a successful mystery novelist.
Martell previously starred in the Showtime series Masters of Sex. On the big screen, he landed his first big role in the 2014 dramedy St. Vincent starring Bill Murray. McAvoy, an acclaimed Scottish actor, is best known for his performances in Atonement, Split, and the X-Men franchise as Charles Xavier aka Professor X.
Beverly Marsh
Tumblr media
Jessica Chastain joins the IT Chapter Two cast as the 2016 version of the Losers' Club lone female member, Beverly Marsh. Sophia Lillis reprises her role from the original film as the young Beverly. During the ‘80s story, Beverly is the focus of both Derry rumors and her own father’s sexual advances. In Pennywise, she sees the physical embodiment of her emotional turmoil. The Losers' Club treats Beverly with respect and helps her confront her worst fears. In IT Chapter Two, Beverly is a Chicago fashion designer with a turbulent personal life.
Since appearing in IT Chapter One, Lillis portrayed a younger version of Amy Adams’ Camille Preaker in the HBO limited series Sharp Objects. She also starred as the title character in the feature film Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, and will headline the 2020 film Gretel and Hansel. Chastain is a two-time Academy Award nominee for her performances in The Help and Zero Dark Thirty. She recently starred in Dark Phoenix, and reunited with director Simon Kinberg for the upcoming spy film 355.
Ben Hanscom
Tumblr media
In IT Chapter Two, Ben Hancsom develops a crush on Beverly and stands up to his school bullies. In the '80s, Ben helps the Losers' Club come to terms with and understand the historical context for Pennywise’s return to Derry. As a kid, Ben is known to be a New Kids on the Block fan and a generally shy person - that is, until he joins the Losers' Club. Ben is portrayed by Jeremy Ray Taylor (Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween) in IT Chapter One, and Jay Ryan (Top of the Lake) in IT Chapter Two.
Richie Tozier
Tumblr media
Once again being played by Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, Richie Tozier is the most out-spoken member of the Losers' Club. For IT Chapter Two, Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader stars as Richie in the 2016 timeline. The character provides comic relief in the original film and was extremely reluctant to face Pennywise, though he ultimately sides with his friends for the final fight. IT Chapter Two, meanwhile, reveals that Richie grew up to be a DJ in Los Angeles.
Wolfhard is primarily known for his role as Mike on Stranger Things, though he's also nabbed roles in The Goldfinch and Ghostbusters 2020. Hader is the creator and star of the HBO series Barry and has been both a prominent actor and voice actor on the big and small screens, appearing in productions from Knocked Up to The Venture Bros to Toy Story 4.
Mike Hanlon
Tumblr media
Chosen Jacobs reprises his role as Mike Hanlon from IT Chapter One in IT Chapter Two, with Isaiah Mustafa playing the older version in the sequel film. Mike views himself as an outsider, but he’s welcomed into the Losers' Club by Richie early on. Like his peers, Mike has a difficult relationship with his father. In the 2016 narrative, Mike works as a Derry librarian and warns the Losers' Club members about It’s return.
Jacobs has a recurring role as Will Grover on the CBS series Hawaii Five-0. Mustafa, on the other hand, is best known for starring in a series of Old Spice commercials, and he also starred in the Freeform series Shadowhunters.
Eddie Kaspbrak
Tumblr media
In both films, Jack Dylan Grazer stars as the Losers' Club member Eddie Kaspbrak. Like Bill, he sees visions of Georgie, and struggles with his over-protective mother. James Ransone joins the IT Chapter Two cast as the 2016 version of Kaspbrak, a married New York City entrepreneur.
Grazer portrayed a younger version of Timothée Chalamet’s character in the 2018 movie Beautiful Boy and starred in the DC blockbuster Shazam!. Ransone previously starred in HBO's The Wire, and portrays The Deputy in the Sinister movie franchise, so it's clear he has some horror experience.
Stanley Uris
Tumblr media
Portrayed by Wyatt Oleff in IT Chapter One, Stanley Uris refuses to believe that Pennywise is real. He’s arguably the most nervous member of the Losers' Club, and tries to maintain control over situations. For IT Chapter Two, Andy Bean stars as the older version of Stanley, an Atlanta accounting professional.
Oleff plays young Peter Quill in both Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Bean starred as Greg Knox in the Starz series Power, and also portrayed Alec Holland in the short-lived DC Universe series Swamp Thing.
Henry Bowers
Tumblr media
Nicholas Hamilton returns as the malicious town bully, Henry Bowers, with Teach Grant portraying the older version in IT Chapter Two. Henry actively challenges the Losers' Club members, only to be referred to as a “paper man” by his father, whom he ultimately murders in the first film. During the sequel, Henry escapes from an asylum and chases after the Losers' Club.
Hamilton previously had roles in Captain Fantastic and The Dark Tower, another Stephen King adaptation. Grant has appeared in the series Altered Carbon and Van Helsing.
The Leper
Tumblr media
In both films, this homeless character is a warped version of Pennywise. Javier Botet reprises his role as the Leper for IT Chapter Two. The Spanish actor previously starred as Tristana Medeiros in the found-footage movie franchise REC, and recently portrayed The Toe Monster in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
Georgie Denbrough
Tumblr media
Jackson Robert Scott reprises his role as Bill’s brother, Georgie, who is killed at the beginning of IT Chapter One, and haunts the Losers' Club throughout the rest of the film, namely his brother. Scott's other big role, besides Georgie, is Bode Locke in the series Locke & Key.
Alvin Marsh
Tumblr media
Beverly’s abusive father, Alvin Marsh, is portrayed by Stephen Bogaert in both IT Chapter One and IT Chapter Two. In the sequel, Beverly’s emotional issues as an adult are connected to her experiences with Alvin. Bogaert is known for roles in American Psycho and X-Men: Apocalypse, and he's been the narrator on the TV documentary Air Emergency for several years.
