44. "I... I think I need a hug." Pairing: Ruth Bihari x Ava du Mortain Words: 634 referencing a certain headcanon by @ava-du-mortain 👀

"...Ava?"

Ruth wrings her hands warily as Ava stares down blankly at the footage Nell had gotten at the Rogue hideout. The guise of meeting with them to discuss grievances had gone over smoothly enough, but there was someone there that Ruth hadn't been anticipating.

"Cecilia du Mortain," says the woman on the screen, smirking as she shakes Ruth's hand. "Call me Lia."

Cecilia — Lia, she'd said — looked almost nothing like Ava at first glance. Ruth hadn't thought anything of the vampire that had come to meet them, other than perhaps that she was very attractive. Tall and broad-shouldered, the woman they'd met had been wearing dark makeup and dark clothing, covered in tattoos and piercings, hair cropped short and dyed a deep shade of black that reflected almost purple in the harsh, dingy lighting of the single, swinging bulb that had hung above them in the abandoned warehouse.

Once she'd introduced herself, though, Ruth had seen the similarities. The height, the beautiful, prominent nose. Her eyes were a darker shade of green than Ava's, but when she'd smiled she'd had the same dimples Ava did.

Ava still hasn't moved since she'd first played the clip some fifteen minutes ago now.

"Ava," Ruth tries again, moving closer and sliding her hand gently up her spine. "You're scaring me. Please say something."

Ava finally inhales a deep, sharp, shaky breath, squeezing her eyes shut as if fighting off a migraine.

"I..."

Nothing. Her voice breaks and she shakes her head, gripping the tablet so hard that the screen begins to crack a little. Ruth reaches out, smoothing her hand over Ava's wrist and squeezing.

"I don't know..." she tries again, voice barely more than a quiet rasp. Her eyes open again and her lower lip trembles as she looks down at the screen. Ava shakes her head again. "I don't know."

Ruth nods, squeezing her wrist as her other hand comes up to brush a loose piece of blonde hair behind Ava's ear. Ava sighs, leaning into the touch, trembling faintly. Encouraged, Ruth presses closer still, until she's pressed right up against Ava's side, running her hand up and down Ava's back.

"What can I do, dove? What do you need?"

The pet name seems to break something in her. Ava almost flinches, tears finally dripping down her cheeks as she bends a little, curling in on herself with a ragged gasp. Ava laughs miserably as Ruth curls around her, one arm around her shoulders and the other hand brushing her hair back from her face.

"I... I think I need a hug?"

It's half a laugh, the words coming out stilted and unsure, but Ruth doesn't need anything else as she steps in front of Ava, wrapping both arms around her neck so that Ava's face ends up buried in her shoulder. She squeezes her tight as Ava's arms wrap immediately around her waist and tighten before they both go still. Ruth tries to focus on her breathing — tries to keep it steady and slow as Ava's body heaves with a silent sob. Her shoulders begin to shake, though no sound leaves her chest (the worst kind of crying, she thinks distantly — the quieter the weeping, the more painful it is) and Ruth just holds her tighter, trying to hold all the pieces of Ava's shattered heart together until they can start to stitch themselves back into place.

She's not sure how long they stay like that. It could be minutes, it could have been an hour. Eventually, Ava will be able to take a slower, deeper breath. Eventually, she'll pull away with a stoic expression fixed into place once more, ready to try and face this new development head-on.

But, until then — Ruth will keep holding her until she can hold herself once more.

Adventures in Babysitting

Pairing: Florist!Bucky Barnes x Female Reader Summary: You learn something sweet about Bucky when you have to babysit at the last minute. You consider yourself to be a smart and capable woman. You handled most issues with grace and a level head when they came your way. Ruth leaned on you more than once when problems came up during her wedding planning. It meant a lot that she and others could count on you.

Which is likely why your neighbor, Ava, came to you for help.

"I'm so sorry to bother you. I know you don't know me very well."

The poor woman tried to compose herself as she rocked her five month old baby, Harper, in her arms. They hadn't lived in the area for very long, but Ava was polite when you saw her. You always stopped to chat with her for a minute and made silly faces at the baby. It was sweet.

Seeing her in your doorway in tears almost made you tear up.

"Are you okay? Is Harper okay?" you asked, rushing to get her a tissue. Just because they looked fine physically didn't mean they weren't hurt. "And you aren't bothering me."

"We're fine, but it's a family emergency," she told you as fresh tears fell, wiping her eyes as she balanced Harper with one arm. "I'm sorry to ask, but would you be able to watch her? Hopefully no more than a couple of hours? I've tried calling everyone else and I can pay-"

"I can watch her," you said, holding out your arms. You didn't have anything else going on and you wanted to help her. "You just take care of what you need to do."

"Oh, thank you. Thank you," Ava said, smiling through her tears. She handed you the diaper bag before you carefully took Harper. "I owe you one."

"No, you don't. Just take your time and be safe," you urged, smiling down at the baby. You were glad she was at least somewhat familiar with you. "Does she need a bottle?"

Ava quickly explained that you would need to feed Harper within the next twenty minutes. She left instructions in the bag with how much to feed her, along with diapers, wipes, burp cloth, extra onesies, a blanket, and her teething ring. She also had your number to keep you updated if she would be longer than a couple of hours.

"Thank you again," Ava said, giving her baby a kiss on the top of her head. "Mama loves you. I'll be back as soon as I can."

You gently shut the door with your foot once Ava left, smiling wider when the baby cooed. "We're going to have a lot of fun, aren't we?"

Harper wouldn't stop crying.

"Do you want me to put you down?" you asked, carefully placed her on her back. You winced when she let out a louder cry. "Okay, okay. Bad idea. Sorry," you said, picking her back up.

You gave her the bottle exactly as instructed. You burped her afterward. She had a fresh diaper. She wanted nothing to do with her teething ring. Soft music didn't calm her down and she wouldn't sleep.

What am I doing wrong?

"You miss your mama, don't you?" you asked as you tried to rock her.

More tears rolled down her cheeks as she cried louder, making you wince again as the sound echoed in your ears. You began to walk around the room, doing your best to soothe her. Admittedly, it had been years since you babysat, but you were usually able to keep most babies happy. Why couldn't you do the same with Harper?

"What can I do?" you asked yourself, taking a deep breath when your phone rang. "Shh, shh, it's okay," you said softly, keeping Harper against your chest as you answered.

You didn't even bother to see who called when you put it on speaker.

"Hey, Petal," Bucky's voice happily rang out. "I'm leaving the shop and I was-"

Harper wailed before he could finish his statement.

"Is that a baby?" he asked after a beat, clearly confused. You didn't blame him. You hadn't had a chance to message him that you were babysitting. "Is everything okay?"

"It's my neighbor Ava's baby. She had a family emergency and she asked if I could watch Harper. Bucky, I can't get her to stop crying," you explained, almost in tears yourself. "I-I don't know what to do."

Something had to be wrong with you if you couldn't calm a normally happy baby.

"I'm on my way, okay? You got this," he promised, his tone gentle, but not condescending.

"Okay. I'll see you soon," you smiled for his sake before you hung up. "I got this."

Harper sobbed as you began to walk again.

I don't got this.

Bucky took the crying baby from your arms the moment he walked through the door. There was no fear in his eyes when he looked her over, only concern. He gave you a once-over, too. You probably looked terrible.

Can't call me perfect anymore.

"I fed her, burped her, changed her, tried to put her down for a nap, walked around with her," you told him, watching as he slowly put his hand on Harper's tummy. "Maybe she just doesn't like me?"

"I don't think it has anything to do with you," he said, cooing as he walked over to the couch. "You love Petal, don't you?"

You knew deep down there could be many reasons why Harper was upset, but you wished you knew how to help.

Bucky took a seat and furrowed his brows when he felt her tummy again. "How long ago did you feed her? Did she drink her whole bottle?"

You checked the time. "Over thirty minutes ago. And she drank the entire bottle pretty fast."

"Should be plenty of time to put you on your tummy, right? Poor baby. You're probably still a little gassy, aren't you?" he asked, smiling tenderly as placed her across his legs on her stomach.

You watched in fascination as Bucky began to slowly rub her back. Harper's cries began to decrease after a minute and you finally felt the tension leave your shoulders. Seeing your beefy florist calm an upset baby was a sight to behold. The ease at which he handled her made your fall in love with him a bit more. Especially since you knew how far he had come with his metal arm.

I think my ovaries clenched. How is that possible? No, focus.

You swallowed the lump in your throat as Bucky began to hum. The sound seemed to soothe Harper even more. The cries stopped completely when she let out a loud burp.

"There. That's better, isn't it? No wonder you were upset. That was a big burp," Bucky said in a quiet voice, still making small circles on her back. "Let's see if there's anymore, okay?"

You sat down in the chair, wringing your fingers in your lap as Harper burped again. You should have known to try that. Why didn't you?

"Um, thanks."

You tried to smile at Bucky, but it fell flat.

He shook his head when he caught your frown. "Hey. Don't beat yourself up. You did everything right, okay? I don't know how gassy she normally is, but it could've been because she drank her bottle so fast."

Of course, he knew I'd mentally chastise myself.

You did smile this time. "How do you know so much about this?"

"Um," he shifted so he could readjust Harper and lay her against his chest. She looked so small in his arms, but perfectly content. "Becca was a colicky baby?"

"Was that a question?" you teased.

He blushed as he held Harper a bit closer when she yawned. "I'm kind of embarrassed because we haven't really talked about it," he began as you raised an eyebrow. "I've, uh, read a couple of parenting books and done research on babies because. Well, I might want to be a dad one day."

"You want to be a dad?" you asked, moving from the chair so you could sit beside him. You were careful not to jolt him or disturb Harper. She needed her rest. "And you took it upon yourself to research this kind of stuff?"

"Yeah, I did," he said, avoiding your gaze momentarily. Did he think this topic scared you or that you'd judge him? "I know some things about parenting can't come from books, but a bit of knowledge wouldn't hurt. I just want to be a hands-on dad if it ever happens, you know?"

The blush almost spread to his neck as he kissed the top of Harper's head. Somehow your boyfriend continued to find ways to surprise you and melt your heart. He deserved a family and all the happiness in the world.

"I think that's sweet."

"You do?" he asked, uncertainty in his blue eyes as he looked at you.

That look doesn't belong there.

"Yeah. You're always good with the kids in the shop and I don't know many guys who would take that kind of initiative. You really are one of a kind," you said, smiling when his gaze returned to normal.

He leaned his head over to brush his lips against yours. There was relief in his kiss and you returned it with your own. He saved the day and you were thankful he could be honest with you.

"I didn't want to freak you out," he said

You glanced at Harper, who had her eyes closed. She must have fallen asleep moments ago, either exhausted from her cries or soothed by the florist's warm presence. It could have been both.

She feels safe with you, Bucky. As any lucky baby would.

"I don't think you could ever freak me out, but we can discuss it more over dinner if you want," you said as you put your head on his shoulder.

"I'd like that," he whispered.

The soft tone had your heart skipping a beat. "Besides, you have the paternal instinct down pact. Bet that's why your hair is pulled back."

"It's from work, but I'll take the compliment. And you have a maternal instinct," he told you, making you snort in disagreement. "Hey, none of that. Ava trusted you enough to leave Harper with you and that says a lot."

"But I couldn't soothe her," you whispered.

"Was she happy before she was gassy?"

You thought about it. Harper was fine in the beginning and snuggled against you. She must have felt safe and happy enough in your home.

"She was," you said truthfully.

And I'd be upset if I was gassy, too.

"So you're fine," he smiled. "And you know what else is a good motherly instinct? Asking for help when you need it, like you did today."

He soothed both of us, Harper.

"But we don't need to talk about that now," he added. "I think you deserve a break."

You knew he was giving you an out in case the topic made you uncomfortable.

"We can discuss it over dinner," you offered, seeing the corner of his lip tug in a smile. "Thank you for taking care of her and being my hero," you said, closing your eyes and resting your hand on his chest beside Harper's head.

You pictured Bucky in his shop with a baby in his arms, wearing a blue shirt to match the onesie as he showed him or her all of the beautiful flowers with a loving smile. He even had his hair down in your daydream so your baby could play with it. He'd be so caring and proud. Everything you wanted and more.

"You'll make the best daddy one day."

After a moment, Harper's little hand wrapped around your pinky finger.

"And you'll be the best mommy, Petal," Bucky whispered.

If he was sure of it, so were you.

Soulmates: Chapter Twenty-Seven – Goodbye, Supernatural! (Part 2) – Finale

Summary: On November 19th, 2020, Supernatural aired its last episode. Ava takes to social media to publicly say goodbye and thank the cast, crew, and fans who changed her and her husband’s lives.

avaackles This is the first ever photo of Jensen and me. It was taken during my week on the Supernatural set in June 2005. That 24-year-old girl had no idea the 27-year-old boy standing beside her would become her whole world.

Over the next year, these young, clueless kids became best friends or, more accurately: partners in crime. The summer and fall of 2006 saw a shift in their relationship, and they became more. So much more. Lovers, partners, soulmates. If someone had told me the day this photo was taken where we’d be in 15 years, I’d have died laughing.

When I left SPN in 2010, it was as 29-year-old Ava Broussard. When I filmed my last ever scene as Hannah Singer on September 10th, 2020 (see @jensenackles post to see the last photo taken of the two of us on set), it was as Ava Ackles, wife of ten years, mother to four wonderful children who was exactly one week away from turning forty… How the fuck did that happen??

This entire ride has been totally and utterly life-changing. It’s been humbling and elating. It’s also been overwhelming and terrifying at times. But none of that compares to how blessed and honoured I am to have been a small part of this phenomenal journey. To still hold a place in the hearts of you, the fans, after a DECADE away from Supernatural (minus a few pop-ups here and there!) completely blows my mind. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the love and support you have given me, my family and, of course, my husband.

So many families have been born from this modest show. Including those of the two leading men! But the friendships? They are something special and will stand the test of time. The crew are one of the best in the business, and I’m a lucky woman to call so many of you a friend. None of the past 15 years could’ve been possible without your dedication. I remember when I first met you, we had a very long and heartfelt conversation that had us spilling our hearts out to each other. Misha. Misha, Misha, Misha! We have a saying, us Bostonians, you know the one I’m talking about - you know you’re one of the good guys when we use an insult instead of your name. But the name I gave you when we met in 2008 is not repeatable on social media or anywhere! But know that it’s still true, and that’s still your name on my phone! Thank you, Misha. For everything. But especially for keeping your promise to take care of my boys upon my departure as Hannah. You did good! You are a great friend and a beautiful human being. When you said you wanted to be open-hearted, kind, and true like Castiel - you don’t need to fret, Mish. You already are.

Alright, I thought I was lost for words with Jared! Well, I’m even more lost when it comes to his better half - Genevieve. We formed our never-ending, always strengthening bond over pitchers of margaritas and extra greasy burgers in a sports bar during a Pats game. Despite the extremely unladylike horror I subjected you to, you still wanted to be my friend. Thank you for that - I know it wasn’t pretty. You are my guardian angel. Before we left the show together, we talked for hours about how we would stop each other from falling apart while we tried to figure out what happened next. We talked about every scenario we could come up with, but boy - we were so wrong and unprepared for it! We knew what being a part of this show was like. We lived it as actors and then later as wives. Still, it didn’t make it any easier to make a home and have a family when our husbands worked away for nine months of the year, so I thank you for being there for my kids and me. Always. No questions asked, no matter the circumstances, the reason or the distance between us. I will always be there to do the same for you. I adore you and your beautiful family.

I’ve saved the best for last - Jensen. Love of my life. My light in the darkness. My one and only. My person. My North Star. My home. The better part of me. I can sit here and say that I was ready to watch the series finale tonight. But I wasn’t. It’s over, and I’m still not ready. This show, these characters, and the fans have been a massive part of my life and my family for 15 YEARS! It’s a long damn time, and although the end has been in the making for 18 months, I just can’t find it in me to say goodbye. That word is too final, and I don’t think anyone in the SPN world is ready for that; yet. So, I sign off with arrivederci and leave it at “until we meet again”.

Family don’t end with blood. It never has. And to all the people I’ve mentioned in this long-ass note (sorry!), I’ve shown that. And trust me, there are so many more people in my family that I’ve privately thanked. I love you all ❤️

It isn't that Kendis wouldn't fight for them -- but Kendis is more of a smack talker for "honor" fights. If Kendis is fighting fighting that fight for honor is usually someone's life is in danger. Andy is similar -- though he'd step up if Mason was like betrayed or tricked. Felix would try to fight for Pierre's honor, but Pierre would stop him.

22) What reminds each of their partner?

Pierre x Felix: This is cheesy but light, Pierre associates Felix with light -- specifically light peaking through a shadow makes him think of Felix. Not ALWAYS but when his made wanders? And he catches that? Yeah. Also rainbows. Especially those cute rainbows drawn on concrete. For Felix it is old books and museums are no longer Nat, lmao. Stray cats. And he will find himself thinking of a joke he knows will make Pierre that slight smile and soft chuckle [he will be right].

Valdam: Val says broken pottery. But Val, I don't think looks at something and is like oh, that is Adam. But more it is moments like: Adam would get what I mean here. I wouldn't have to waste time on crap with Adam. For Adam, it is leather jackets qweer4re s lmao. Imagine Adam getting war flashbacks over the word 'greaser'. Also certain scents have become SO Val.

Keva: Ava associates post-its with Kendis. Kendis has introduced highlighters and colorful post-its to her life, Ms. Paper Can't Be Hacked. For Kendis, cargo pants -- mostly because Ava has allowed them to make use of the pockets. I think it is that 'Ava is so dependable', but it is easier t say the pockets.

Andy x Mason: IDK. Is it a cop out to say quiet? I need to ponder. I also think each other's 'vices'. Mason sees alcohol on the rocks and thats Andy

Kat: Everything. IDK, my dude. Kai and Nat balance each other so well, it arguably be like 'oh, if they were here tehy would handle this taht way' ... though I feel Nat would think it more. I think Nat is slowly starting to look at tech with less disdain, tho, bc of Kai. And Kai is more likely to consider trinkets and such, bc he knows Nat would like it ---he's not a big sentimentality dude [outside getting his fave coffee and pastry,lol].

Kate: Kendis has introduced post its into Nate's life too. I think music and the kitchen have become Kendis. Kendis definitely introduced Nate to more modern music, also she hums when she bakes. And Nate loves watching Kendis cook or bake. LOOOOVES it. The leather of Nate's jacket pings for Kendis --- and steadiness.

Convincer: Kendis [though it is barely, lmao; as Kendis is probably up and ready to go --Ava is trying to convince her to get more sleep]. Nate. Val. Nat. Felix. Mason.

Trying to leave: Ava. Kendis. Adam. Kai [though I fee he has surprising moments]. Pierre. Andy [tho, I feel twc!Andy has ... moments].

24) Who's more likely to give the other a massage?

I feel Kat and Pierre x Felix would be the only ones down for this, mutually. Nat for Kai and Pierre for Felix.

Kendis is very particular about touching -- I wouldn't say she is touch adverse [at least not in twc verse, at least not strictly speaking] and certain touches makes them feel closed in and/or clausterphobic. I feel Nate would cue in and would never ask. Ava would never ask either, but I feel it started out as a teasing thing about Ava's tenseness and then became a thing Kendis did sometimes for her.

Val is too awkward for this for this shit -- Val is intimacy adverse, lmao. No ... but it would make them jump out their skin if Adam tried and if they tried it on Adam and it went wrong, they'd just skitter up the wall like a frightened spider.

Andy would fucking never -- though I feel for twc!Andy the thought might occur, so he might do something ... like if Mason got a charlie horse maybe. And IDK if Mason would? Actually maybe ...

Rating: G Pairing: Ruth Bihari x Ava du Mortain Words: 1300 Happy Birthday to the love of my life, Ava du Mortain!

Ava has not celebrated a birthday in… it must be decades, at this point. It’s just not something she’s interested in keeping track of anymore, and it hasn’t been for some time.

The only vague awareness she needs is the knowledge that she is coming up on her first millennium and that is terrifying in a way that makes her feel like she’s standing at the edge of a skyscraper, looking down at the ground with the innate knowledge that she won’t survive the fall. Thinking about the centuries under her belt makes her feel two inches to the left of her body — the body she’s inherited for nine centuries — and, if she allows herself to linger on the feeling, she feels as if somehow everyone around her will be able to take one look at her and know that she is not human.

Farah had tried to throw her a birthday party the first year after she joined the unit. Tried being the key word, as Nate had been quick to shut it down, ever the faithful friend (as he ought to be, after three centuries together).

All of these conflicting emotions are why she often spends her birthday away from everyone, throwing herself into work or something that will occupy her mind to avoid the darkness lurking just beneath the surface.

Since they’ve been in Wayhaven permanently, and since she finally got to take her baby out of storage, she decides to spend this day working on her car. Maybe even go for a drive.

That is all to say, when Ruth finds her out in the garage with a mischievous grin on her face, Ava is immediately suspicious.

“Hi.”

Ava blinks up at her, lying on her back from where she’d been working on something under the car. Ruth’s grin doesn’t waver as she rocks back and forth on her heels, hands behind her back as she obviously has something hiding back there. Frowning, Ava sits up on her elbows, cocking an eyebrow at the Detective.

“...hello.”

Ruth laughs at the tone Ava has, looking up at the car as she smiles brightly. “Are you taking her out, today?”

“I… I might,” Ava says, still unsure about what it is, exactly, that Ruth wants. She sits up more, bracing her forearms on her knees. “It’s nice out today, at least, and we all have the day off, so it seems like a good time.”

Ruth nods. “It’s beautiful out, today. The park might be a little busy, but I know a place where the road leads up to a cliff overlooking the sea if you want.”

“That sounds… nice.”

Ruth laughs at the hesitation Ava has when she speaks, grinning down at her in such a way that Ava’s breath catches in her throat. For a moment, she swears that the sunlight streaming in from the open garage door gets a little brighter to match the joy and contentment sparkling in Ruth’s eyes.

And then Ruth shakes her head a little and offers Ava what she had behind her back.

It’s an oblong, velvet jewelry box with a little blue ribbon on it.

Ava winces before she can stop herself, and Ruth laughs again, bright and joyful enough that Ava’s lips twitch reluctantly with the urge to join in the laughter. Ava takes the box as Ruth lowers herself to sit on the ground across from her.

“I know you don’t like celebrating the b-word,” Ruth starts, shrugging lightly. “Nate warned me about that. But, I saw this online the other day and it was too fitting to pass up. You’re welcome to be mad at me about it, but…” she trails off with another shrug.

Ava snorts softly, returning her gaze to the box. Delicately, she sighs and tugs at one end of the ribbon, the satin sliding away and falling to the pavement below. Bracing herself for — whatever might be inside this thing, she carefully opens the box…

…and her shoulders slump a little as she takes in the delicate silver pendant on a chain lying in the velvet.

At first glance, the pendant seems to be in the shape of a shield. However, upon closer inspection, there is a sword in the middle, surrounded by two dragons coiled on either side, all forming the shape of a shield. In the center of the pendant lies a stone almost the exact shade of Ava’s eyes.

“Oh…”

It’s barely a breath as she exhales softly, reaching out to touch the pendant delicately with her fingers.

Ruth’s foot shakes in her periphery as she waits for Ava’s response, nerves clearly getting to her. Ava looks back up at her to find a hopeful look on her face, teeth gnawing at her lower lip. When she meets her eyes, Ruth smiles a little.

“...well?”

Ava considers her for a moment, eyes trailing over her pretty face — and the she snorts again, smiling softly down at the necklace.

“It’s lovely,” Ava says, pulling the chain from the velvet. As the chain pulls free, she realizes that it isn’t long enough to be pulled over the head.

“Do you want to wear it?”

“I do.”

The answer falls from her lips faster than she’d expected, but any embarrassment Ava might have felt fades quickly when she looks up at Ruth and catches the excitement in her eyes. Ruth shifts onto her knees, holding her hands out and wiggling her fingers as she says, “I’ll help.”

Ava isn’t entirely sure about this, but she doesn’t want to not wear it, so she willingly hands it over, careful not to brush Ruth’s skin as the pendant drops into her waiting palm. Turning around, Ava bends her neck, leaning forward a little so that Ruth can access the nape of her neck easily. Ruth brushes at some of the hair that had fallen loose from Ava’s bun as she worked on her car — ignores the way a full-body shiver washes over Ava’s skin, making her visibly shake for a moment — and then she drapes the necklace around Ava’s neck, fixing the clasp quickly and easily.

The pendant falls perfectly against her sternum, hitting near the top of her cleavage. Not in the way and able to be visible if Ava were to decide to wear a tanktop or something lower cut than the crew-cut tees she favors.

Touching it gently, she turns to look at Ruth again.

Something in her stomach flutters at how close Ruth is.

“Thank you,” she says faintly, caught on the way the sun catches on one of the hubcaps reflects the sunlight into Ruth’s eyes, lighting them up like a bottle of cognac in the sun.

Ruth smiles. “I’m glad you like it.”

I love it. I love you.

Ava coughs, looking away as her ears begin to burn and rubbing at the back of her neck. Clearing her throat, she looks back at her car and asks, “Do you want… do you want to go for a drive with me?”

A stupid question, Ava realizes, because Ruth immediately lights up, sitting upright so quickly that her curly hair bounces softly with the motion. “I’d love to!”

Ava smiles even as longing closes a cold fist around her heart, squeezing as she takes in just how beautiful Ruth is.

She still doesn’t like celebrating her birthday. She doesn’t care to actually count how old she is or force herself to choke down a piece of cake.

This isn’t so bad, though. When she pulls out onto the main road, with late spring air combing sticky fingers through their hair, feeling the quiet hum of her car beneath her hands as she drives them up the coast, her heart in the seat beside her…

Well, she thinks maybe this birthday, at least, is a good one.
