Guru Purnima 2023: Celebrating the Sacred Bond Between Guru and Disciple

Guru Purnima is a holy festival that is observed in India and several other countries like Nepal, Bhutan to pay respect and show appreciation for spiritual guides, mentors, and gurus. The word “Guru Purnima” comes from the Sanskrit language, where “guru” stands for “teacher” or “guide,” and “purnima” is used to describe the full moon day.

Guru Purnima has a long history and is very significant in terms of both history and culture. The custom of paying respect to gurus and spiritual teachers has centuries-old roots in many different civilizations.

This day is advantageous to meditate and practice yoga sadhana as it is believed to strengthen one’s spiritual practise and establish a connection with higher consciousness. The spiritual importance of the day magnifies the advantages of these techniques, encouraging inner change and bringing one’s existence into alignment.

When is Guru Purnima?

Guru Purnima is celebrated on a full moon day during the Ashadha month (June–July) in accordance with the Hindu lunar calendar. The celebration this year will take place on July 3, 2023.

Why is Guru Purnima Celebrated?

Guru Purnima festival holds significance beyond the realms of spiritual teachings. Along with the traditional practises, greetings, messages, and presents between gurus and followers have become customary during the modern era.

Also known as Vyasa Purnima, Veda Vyasa the author of the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, was born on this day. Shri Mahadev Acharya, Shri Ramanuja Acharya, are considered the greatest gurus in Hinduism. Because it is believed that on this day, Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, the Buddhist also honour him by celebrating Guru Purnima.

A day of great spiritual significance, it emphasises the value of the guru-disciple bond. It serves as a reminder to respect the advice and lessons learned from our mentors and to foster a mindset of continuous learning and improvement.

There are various reasons why Guru Purnima is observed, and each one emphasises the importance and significance of this auspicious day.

The Guru – Disciple Relationship :

The guru-disciple relationship has been cherished for ages and it is not limited only to that. It includes all the teachers and mentors who have made a significant contribution to moulding our lives. It’s the time to acknowledge them who have provided direction, and inspiration in various facets of life. By honouring them, we recognize the invaluable contributions they have made and the impact they have had on our personal growth.

Expressing Gratitude and Reverence :

The Guru Purnima celebration provides a beautiful platform for disciples to express their deep gratitude and reverence towards their gurus. On this blessed day, the disciples rise early and perform rituals in tribute to their teachers. Flowers, incense, and other sacred items are offered during puja, a traditional worship practise, as a sign of the disciple’s devotion and appreciation. By expressing gratitude, the student not only deepens their relationship with their guru but also develops humility and appreciation in themselves.

Self-reflection and Renewal :

During this day, disciples reflect on the teachings of the gurus and renew their commitment to the path of learning and growth. We all carry a spark of brilliance, that has the power to set the world on fire. Everyone is born with unique gifts, an irreplaceable potential. Something tangible and unquestionable, that makes others feel inspired.

Words and facts may be conduits of wisdom, but they're empty without the meaning of personal resonance and energetic imprint behind them. A guru has to have something real inside him, where the light springs forth upon his disciples.

It's necessary for anyone to find the guru inside them to accomplish anything worthwhile. For your actions to have meaning, you need to have them supported with personal integrity and unconditional belief in what you're saying. You won't get anywhere doing or saying things you're not really feeling inside you.

This world is already full of people, that live by putting up a front to cover up their resounding internal emptiness. They come and go, forgotten by history. Those, who are remembered for centuries are those, who genuinely aligned with the highest expression of their souls and solidified it through authentic achievement.

We live in times that sadly promote the negative agenda to produce anything quickly at any cost. The pressure of this energy is very painful, and I've fought hard to avoid it myself.

When the world tells you to hurry, resist. Don't rush. Make sure you only create from a place of total alignment. If you're not ready, keep learning until you find the teacher inside you.

JUPITER AND RAHU CONJUNCTION ALSO KNOWN AS GURUCHANDAL YOG

Jupiter and Rahu conjunction also known as Guru Chandal yoga or dosha is another popular dosha seen in many of the charts. It is a very simple dosha and need to be understood. Guru means Jupiter and Chandal means an outcast person, who is seen mainly in the graveyards. In astrology, the chandal status is given to Rahu, the demon of the zodiac. So when Jupiter is in conjunction with Rahu, then Guru Chandal dosha is formed.

Jupiter being teacher of the Devas is Guru Brihaspathi. Jupiter is considered as the most beneficial planet among the 9 planets and is known as the ultimate form of spirituality and Godliness. Since it means purity, it doesn’t like to get associated with Rahu, who is a demon. Rahu is called as a Chandal here, chandal resides among corpses. So these are two opposite forces.

Jupiter is the lord of Pisces and Sagittarius. In the natural zodiac wheel, it owns the 9th house and the 12th house. Both the houses are dealing with spirituality, moksha, and relationship with God.

When Jupiter and Rahu are together, then the person may find it difficult to abide by the divine laws of obedience, reverence, and submission. He will naturally be a rebel and his rebellious nature will make him get setbacks.

His rebellious nature will be his identity wherever he goes. He may like to question others, and it will be difficult for him to mingle with others easily. He may feel difficulty in respecting others. In simple words, his expression are of different types compared to regular and major expressions of humans.

Rahu is known as the demon in astrology and it means rebellion and aggression. When one see Jupiter and Rahu together in one’s chart, then they need to check the degrees and how much close they are? It’s generally assumed that, more closer, will be more rebellion in nature.

Guru Chandal dosha was considered as very inauspicious in the earlier days, but we should count all doshas in the present day context. This is the time for the rebels. When we look at the world, in general, we can see traditionalists are lagging behind and the world truly belongs to the rebels. Rebels are getting acknowledged. Rebels are noticed for their ideas and findings. The world is asking for change.

This dosha will have a different impact, according to the house which it occurs. You have to check in which house your Guru Chandal Yoga exists. Then you see whether you are challenging the traditional practices regarding that house? For example, the 7th house is the house of marriage.

When Guru Chandal yoga occurs in the 7th house, then the person may like to break the traditional kind of marriage. He may even go for living relationship or marriage against the family traditions. At the same time, the other features of the 7th house like business and professional relationships will not be a heavy task. The 7th house is the house of open enemies, so this person will take a new strange way to conquer his enemies, which will be a heavy blow to them.

So, to conclude Guru Chandal yoga means that you have that natural rebel in you. This rebellious may have the power to cause disruptions in your relationships. Especially with the Guru figures in your life.
