I hope those with ARFID are gifted a safefood as a treat by your closest loved ones this year. Wishing you a very "being treated to a non-food expression of love" on this day. And of course there's nothing wrong with showing love to yourself by treating yourself. A spa day, some flowers, a walk in a scenic location can all be excellent non-food treats.
And to those of you who managed to try a new treat outside of your list of safefoods today, I hope you know how brave and strong you were to try that! It's okay to enjoy it, and it's also okay not to. Allowing yourself freedom of feelings around your food is one of the best little gifts you can give to yourself.

PSA ARFID is not…
Just being a ‘picky eater’
Only experienced by children
An excuse kids use to be fussy
Any less serious than other EDs
A phase

Heya! Just trying this account out:) it’s not technically art just a brain dump but there will be art, poetry, art journaling, junk journaling, scrapbooking, mental health stuff and whatever else comes to mind. Everything I post is mine unless stated otherwise.

hi, do you have anything for arfid? i dont struggle with my self image but i do struggle with eating enough or even eating on harder days and its so disheartening when i have no energy and feel bad and exhausted and i know i just have to eat to feel better but i CANT
Hello dear one! I can absolutely offer some resources for ARFID. Compared to how we understand many other eating and feeding disorders, ARFID is often left out do discussions because it isn’t body image centered. This can make finding support really difficult! I am so proud of you for working towards a happier and healthier self and finding ways to eat, especially with such strong mental barriers trying to stop you.
Understanding whether you’re dealing with ARFID oriented more around avoidance, aversion, restriction, or a combination may be a good place to start. This can help you define what actually happens in your mind, and what you feel prevents you from eating. Did this disorder stem from a specific experience, genetics, social factors, or a mix? Answering these questions will likely be a big factor in what treatment your pursue.
As I recommend for every eating disorder, a multidisciplinary approach of therapy, nutritional support, and medical assessment is very important for recovering. This isn’t something you are making up, nor is it something you can magically stop. It’s okay to need more help, and because it’s a mental health issue you may need someone to help you work through a professional level plan.
I know many people struggling with ARFID receive support in eating and trying new foods as a form of exposure therapy. This is a very scary and mentally intense task, so it should be planned. Planning to work with a professional or loved one on a specific schedule and slowly work up to trying and eating new and more foods is a good way to press your limits. You will struggle, it will suck a lot sometimes! But you will also make progress. Don’t push yourself into a panic, it’s okay to work up to a single crumb over a period. Whatever works works. Also prepare to rest and recover from the experience. If you work up to taking a bite of a food you previously couldn’t, you are allowed to feel exhausted and need to practice self care after. This isn’t meant to be a punishing experience.
I’ve attached two articles below that offer information that could be helpful for seeking treatment. I also recommend support groups and recovery groups, which may help be a healthy motivator and reassurance that you are not alone in this.
You’ve got this!
-Evan

When you realize that being high doesn't necessarily make you eat everything in the fridge because you still can't figure out what the hell you want, but it absolutely does make most foods you eat taste fucking delicious so you finish the meal, pay attention to your body signals, and hydrate instinctively.
Pot is weird.

so i’m in a treatment program for an ed and i have to use a meal log app so that my team can see what i’m eating. at the end of the meal log the last question is “what is the next thing you can do to take care of yourself?” and at first i was leaving it blank but recently i started writing the most unhinged shit just to see if they’re actually reading my responses. so far i have written tax fraud and bank robbery and nobody has said a word to me about it lmfao i’m gonna write arson next

My therapist suggested last week that I try to recover from ARFID again and I really really want to. I'm just so scared. I'm tired of being scared of food all the time and latching only onto one or two meals and eating exclusively that for months and months. I hate cheese pizza right now but it's all I've been able to muster this whole semester. But it's all I know how to do and food legitimately scares and overwhelms me. I know avoiding recovery is just going to make the problem and anxiety worse but I just want to metaphorically hide in a dark cave until the danger passes. Tomorrow I am going to try and come up with reasons why it's worth it, and remember that I don't need to make big changes right away. Maybe a Pinterest board will help? Idk I'm just so conflicted and tired.

the thing about arfid is that your “pickiness” isn’t a choice. it’s like, if you were stuck on a deserted island with none of your safe foods (which most likely won’t be there) you will just starve. you most likely cannot bring yourself to eat a food you don’t deem safe, even in a situation where it’s necessary. even when you’re starving.
this is why so many of us either get something quick to eat before we go to a family gathering where we know we won’t like the food, or starve throughout the whole thing and eat immediately after. it sucks and none of us want to be “picky.” we WANT to like the healthy foods. we want to EAT them. trust us, we do.

What they don't tell you about being underweight your entire life is that when you start gaining weight, even if you should hypothetically be done getting taller, you can grow a few inches. I have been gaining weight for about 4 months now and I've grown 1.5 inches, only from 105-115 lbs. I used to be 5'1, now I'm almost 5'3. Maybe I'll be Patrick height by the time I am healthy.

Some tips for practicing increased food intake specifically related to the lack of interest type of Arfid are:
- Set timers on cell phone 3x a day and make sure to eat something. A big theme for people who identify with the lack of interest in eating or food is suppressed hunger cues. This means that a persons body won’t alert them when they should be hungry. Setting reminders to try and eat something are helpful to not ‘forget’ to eat, when it would otherwise be easy to.
- Ice packs. A big issue that one could face when increasing intake is feeling full/ bloated. This can be an uncomfortable sensation but it will pass with consistency. To help distract from the uncomfy feelings of being too full, you can try to use ice packs on your abdomen, back of neck, or arms.
-Radical acceptance. This is a DBT skill and in short it is the practice of accepting what is. You don’t have to like or condone it, you can just accept it at face value. This is really helpful when you have lack of interest in food because you can fact check by knowing that you need to eat to nourish your body. You don’t have to like it, but by radically accepting that more food intake is needed you can cope with it better.

Today I challenged myself to eat all the grapes on my plate, not just the ones that felt hard enough. And I did it!! It was a little difficult at points, and a few were kinda squishy and weird, but I ate them anyway!!

a trick that i’ve found effective for making a well rounded meal:
make a meal you would feed a kindergartener on a daily basis. put it on a cute plate, maybe sectioned. add a little treat as initiative. become the kindergartener. inner child healing AND physically healthy habits woohoo
(my guilt complex means i will eat it all despite sensory issues bc i can NOT waste food)
