We as a society need an autism health and fitness guide. I have really strong ARFID and disabilities that are more common when you are also autistic. Having better advice and tips that aren't just "meal prep the fuck outta your life" or "starve" would be nice.

I wish more people knew about ARFID and how much it can affect you. As someone who has it, it’s so discouraging seeing people every now and then online (or irl) make fun of people for being “picky eaters” who see it as a sign of immaturity. It doesn’t matter how old and mature I get, that doesn’t make my sensory issues and lack of hunger cues from bad interoception somehow disappear.

Okay hang on...
Are there any characters in any media with ARFID?
There are more and more autistic characters but I have not seen a single one with ARFID.
I would like to see a character with ARFID please. I think it would make me feel better about having it.

Casual warning that if you rant about people who are picky eaters but then get mad at anyone who brings up ARFID I'm pissing on your toothbrush
"But I'm not talking about you guys!!!" You're literally ranting about picky eaters. ARFID is the picky eater disorder. Yes you are.
And sidenote, almost nobody gives a fuck about people with ARFID because as far as they know we don't even exist. I've told my family numerous fucking times about why I eat the way I do and how it's almost certainly linked to the autism diagnosis I got in middle school and they still don't get it. I've been buying my own meals since I was 14. I can't go to gatherings including meals without fully expecting to get ridiculed and mocked by at least one person, whether that's because I didn't take enough food or I didn't clear my plate. It's exhausting.

Eating nothing but a McDonald’s nugget happy meal for the 3rd day in a row because it’s the only thing you can eat without literally wanting to rip out your own stomach and set it on fire 🙃

Hi! My name is Lucas and I have Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, or ARFID. ARFID is a disorder where people greatly restrict the food they eat and avoid many others, due to sensory issues such as texture or smell or due to a fear of negative consequences such as getting sick. Mine is due to sensory issues. I wanted to make a series sharing foods I eat, tips on how to try foods, and more! Welcome to Lucas's Safe Foods!
Create-Your-Own Restaurants
Create your own meal restaurants are a life saver for ARFID. You are allowed to be as picky as you want, you easily get to choose exactly what comes on your food, and usually you also watch as it's made which can help ease anxiety.
Another good thing about the style of fast food, is that you are able to add or try new things on top of a food you already like one at a time, at whatever rate you please.
Below is a small list of fast food chains in the US that are create your own. Most pizza places also have build your own pizzas, where you get to choose everything on the pizza.
Subway - sandwiches
Which wich - sandwiches
Chipotle - mexican
Moe's - tex mex
MOD pizza - pizza
Five Guys - burgers

“My arfid has become more aggressive” hopeless, not fierce, not serving, fatalistic, unengaged, detached, frustrated undertones.
“My arfid is in super silly mode” whimsical, fierce, direct, very engaged, communicative.
(No but fr i have no safe foods because my safe foods randomly flipped and i dont know whats ok now besides a cake mix i ran out of and that has like little to no nutritional value.)

I feel so ashamed that I’m nearly 25 and I’m having to be referred to a dietitian because of how limited my diet is
My health is declining because my intake is not good enough but sensory issues and OCD make food feel so difficult
How am I almost 25 and not able to feed myself adequately?

Hi everyone,
I couldn’t find much information today about Autism and ADHD, but I did find some information about ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). This excerpt will be a bit long, so I apologize in advance:
ARFID in children and teens
ARFID is most common in childhood and early adolescence. While the true prevalence of ARFID remains to be studied, preliminary research indicates that boys may have a higher risk than girls and that as many as 5% of children are affected. Children who show symptoms of ARFID might avoid certain foods out of fear of texture, smell or appearance. They also might develop a fear that a certain food would cause them to feel sick or choke. In addition to the fear of food, children who experience ARFID may also display some fasting behaviors.
ARFID in adults
Adults with ARFID often have inflexible eating patterns, which can leave them labeled as extremely “picky” with regard to food selection.
There is a clear distinction between food preferences, which everyone has, and inflexible eating behaviors found in people diagnosed with ARFID. These inflexible behaviors include the following:
Refusal to try different foods or new types of food
Requiring extremely specific preparation of food choices
Sensitivity to the sensory perception of a food, whether physical or emotional
Another common symptom of ARFID in adults is fear-based food restriction. Individuals who experience distress about certain foods can have an emotional or physical reaction due to thoughts of an allergic reaction, choking or vomiting. Because of this fear, they may avoid certain foods and/or textures, depleting the individual of nutritional value. Fear-based food restriction can also result in low body weight and increased anxiety around food.
The full article will be linked below if you’d like to read through it. The link takes a bit to load though.

My specific blend of sensory issues, eating disorder (ARFID) and teeth trauma means I just. Don’t like food, overall.
This makes so many things difficult because god people love to socialize with food. It’s a whole love language. Thank you, but I’d like to forget it exists until my wretched little body forces me to remember. I’d gladly opt out of food eating if that was a choice... I have so many better things to do! And you’re telling me it’s a crucial part of health? Auughghhh.
Food is beautiful though, I love pies and fancy cakes and fruit dishes... I don’t wanna eat them or usually even smell them (fruit is ok, spices fuck me up) though.
Big fan of the concept of eating food, hate the execution. 4/10
This also makes my mushroom hyperfixation very funny: normal human’s first assumption ‘oh yeah mushrooms are tasty and good for you’ (or they jump to Lol Drugs) and I have to be like uh, I don’t eat any of them. No, I just. Really enjoy them, conceptually. No I don’t want to try any. I just wanna look. Thanks.

After being at college with friends and roommates who understand both autism and me, I’ve realized how much it like….actually affects me? I guess I always was just like “yeah I have low support needs level one high functioning yada yada yada” and now I’m realizing that I’m maybe a little less normal than I actually thought. Which is fine and all. But I just had to kick my girlfriend out of the room because she was eating a sandwich with onions. And recently I’ve been screaming whenever anyone opens the fridge because it smells bad. And I just sent my mom a text telling her how I was eating a salad today and she was so proud of me. So yeah I actually really am autistic.
