when you talked about the Vadelairn in your stories. not only did you say that the desert where they were was further from where Faerie borders our world than the distance between earth and the large magellanic cloud, but you said that the creatures can get too big to live on land and swim through space. How big is your version of faerie? And how does space work?
Ah yes, so you noticed my little secret there. For those who might wonder, the Large Magellanic Cloud is 158, 200 Light Years away from our humble planet. This means that light, which can travel the distance of 91.601 million miles from our sun to us in 8.3 minutes, takes 158,200 years to travel to that truly enormous distance. If we attempted to convert our distance from Light Years to Miles it would be something along the lines of nine hundred twenty-nine quadrillion nine hundred ninety-eight trillion five hundred thirty-four billion thirty-seven million six hundred forty-nine thousand nine hundred eighty miles (929,998,534,037,649,980mi).
To travel that distance at even a brisk 70 miles per hour on a straight highway would take you thirteen quadrillion two hundred eighty-five trillion seven hundred billion years (13,285,700,000,000,000yr). Helpfully, the Large Magellanic Cloud is among the closest of the galaxies near to our Milky Way. There are plenty more that are much further out. Now that's a very large distance, impossibly, unimaginably large. Far too large, as anyone who knows even a little bit about astrophysics, for a planet of the kind we are familiar with. Most notably, any solid type planet would have long since collapsed to become a gas giant, then a star, and finally a black hole long before it ever reached the size of what we're suggesting here. If that is the case, then we might try to imagine a different sort of realm. A flat plane that begins at the border between our worlds and reaches infinitely in three other directions. Such an existing spatial structure is, as far as we are aware, impossible in our universe. The logical conclusion must then be that the world of Faerie, as they call it, is not only another world... but another Universe entirely. Such a strange thought. Another Universe, different from our own. Of course that immediately brings up issues with the very word "Universe", which is defined to mean everything that exists. So instead we might call it another reality, another bubble of existence that is separated from our own and seems to operate by very different natural laws. For simplicity's sake let's simply refer to them as our world and Faerie. It would be difficult to determine exactly what Faerie is like. This is because it's very unlikely that any human who wanders into such a place is seeing it as it truly is. For all we know it could be a multi-dimensional construct that exists upon a multitude of levels of reality and across vast distances of space. That's not even considering that the Fae might be able to treat Time as a physical dimension and live here and there among that as well. Thus I think we might try to imagine Faerie as a flat world that goes on forever in three directions with an unknowably vast amount of space above it. But having it be like that would cause so many basic physical problems that pretty much everything would stop working if I want the world to even attempt consistency. However, there is a much simpler and more elegant solution. One that I actually introduced through some of the poetry and backstory of Faerie in my tale. The stories about their ancient King when he visited other worlds. "Across the sea he came alone o’er glass-like waters deep. While far below at depths unknown strange creatures lay in sleep." And then later when it mentioned his flight from the dying world. "The Faerie King, or so it's told, he fled back to the shore, where once he’d come from worlds so old to search for something more."
You see, it isn't so much that he's crossing an ordinary ocean to different continents. No, he's traveling outward to different realities, different universes if you will. The implication is that the Faerie are powerful, and collectively they're much more powerful than anything humanity can achieve. We don't know if their king collapsed only a single world or the whole universe he stole light from, but whatever he did it required immense power and knowledge that we do not possess. They came to the world we call Faerie, as the poem mentions at one point. It already existed. So I have a brand new reality whose laws of physics are entirely up to my direction, and a race of beings of incredible power. My solution was that they simply warped reality itself, rewove it. If planets like we know them existed, they were woven together, remade. And in the process the people themselves became inextricably woven together with the world they were making. So while the world itself is made up of many once separated parts, it is essentially endless, just as the night sky above them is equally infinite. Glamours and illusions of immense world-bending power allow for some continuity such as a sun rising and setting, while also allowing for journeys across the world to places with different suns and moons, or places without any day at all. One of the more interesting ideas that surfaces when we talk of creating things, whether writing or art or anything of that nature, is the idea that sometimes when the conditions are right... the creation itself seems to take up a life of its own, it grows bigger than its own creator's ability to truly understand or control. The same effect can be amplified by a thousand times in a creation involving multiple creators. So thus I imagined that in their remaking of this universe, they made something that became more than they intended, something beyond their ability to control or know fully. In their hubris they sought total control, and it seems as if all reality told them no and ripped it from their grasp.
If belief is all that it takes to bend a whole universe and reweave it into something that shouldn't work but does because you believe it to be, then that belief would be self limiting. Belief in fear and confusion, in forgetting and in weakness... those things become real with that belief. But there are also always those who wish to explore, to create, to wonder and dream. You cannot do those things without a horizon of the unknown, without something to be explored. So too does their belief in these things affect their reality. For all their power, they cannot simply exercise it at any given time, they are limited in every way by the very act of creation. They aren't really cognizant of all this in a way that matters. Many younger fae, born in the eons since the reweaving, don't understand at all, and thus have a very different idea of the power their own people once held and the nature of their own world. To be entirely honest, while some of this is and will be relevant to the story of Ardri and his friends, it's really not necessary to know the over-complicated metaphysical philosophy that I regularly ponder while worldbuilding. We look at contemporary fantasy these days and find that people have a desire to create big complicated systems of magic and power, to outline all aspects of this constructed reality. While that's fine, not all kinds of fantasy really need that, and some suffer from it. Some of the power that fairy and folktales have in their telling is sometimes that the magic ISN'T explained. That it lies beyond the understanding of the protagonist (usually a human), and seems to follow a set of rules that they don't know. Part of things is that they must learn something of those rules, must gain some ground, enough to move the story forward, but that there's always much more that simply remains unexplained, a mystery. This same rule of the unknown holds true for many styles of fantasy writing, even well into the world of novelization. But it can be a difficult art to balance the things the reader MUST know in order to make sense of the story, and what things the writer will need to know and decide but NEVER actually tell us in so many words. There is so much advice on how much to worldbuild and how much of that to reveal, but the truth is that the answer is necessarily ever-changing and it simply takes a lifetime of practice to become somewhat decent at getting it right when you tell a story. I myself find a great deal of comfort in excessive worldbuilding, and I will be glad to answer whatever questions about it that you ask, but all my story really needs you to know is that the world they live in is now is vast, wondrous, and strange, and that faeries once traveled between worlds and allowed their hubris to cause irreparable damage to some of those worlds.

@sparkga tagged me to answer some questions (sorry I'm super late to this lmao). ONE thing that traumatized you as a child: - Geese. Definitely geese. When I was five my Mammaw liked to take me to a park by the Arkansas River to feed the geese but one day I got too brave and walked right up to a group of three of them. The geese seeing that I had a full loaf of deliciousness (yes it was bread we weren't aware of the effects then) decided that they were going to get the bread no matter what and so they charged at me and backed me in between two cars in the parking lot and started biting and clawing at me leaving me bloody and such. What was my Mammaw doing you might ask? Sitting on a park bench staring at the water ignoring my yelling, the geese honking...and the car alarms that I was setting off by flailing and hitting them lmao. TWO random facts about anything: - Certain jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii and Turritopsis nutricula, are being closely studied for their supposed ability to "cure" cancerous cells by using transdifferentiation to turn one specialized tissue cell to another one effectively making them "immortal". - There is a "shrine" in Final Fantasy XIV dedicated to the players of the original Final Fantasy MMORPG. The shrine depicts a deceased Goobue that is overgrown with flora with an NPC that speaks of those that protected the city of Ul'Dah with a wall of Goobues. Essentially there were a lot of players that lined up in front of Ul'Dah on their goobue mounts before the FFXI servers shut down. The developers were moved by it and so represented those dedicated enough in the now FFXIV.
THREE books you're currently working on: - I'm rereading The Graveyard Book - Neil Gaiman - A collection of Lovecraft legends/mythos - Trying to finish A Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier FOUR songs you love at the moment: XIII - Mr. Kitty https://open.spotify.com/track/6dPmWrkCwm4qHoS8Re5RqA?si=a8328c7908974b0b See Through - Heart of Gold https://open.spotify.com/track/774fJMM3iGq7xMmVyCvom5?si=818290b995b74eb9 Something about your love - SG Lewis https://open.spotify.com/track/7cujJQPxdHeDz5mKLmv0bu?si=7cd3f694159346a4 New Life - Brothertiger https://open.spotify.com/track/4cPITUEkIFd93IK2J8tHpt?si=7462f6ce2a4b4f8f FIVE games you're looking forward to: - Pokemon Scarlet/Violet - Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Bayonetta 3 - Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me SIX perfect foods: - Blueberries - Peanut butter - sweet potato - Paglia E. The surface of the planet was silent, the redish desert sand crunching like glass beneath his boots. The ruins shield him from the sun, casting him in an odd coldness, the ruins themselves seem to whisper dark tales of war and destruction and as he brushes his fingers across the runes in the stone that coldness settles into his bones. As glowing yellow eyes scan the surroundings, the silence is only truly broken by his astromech bumping into his leg as she reminds him yet again what a terrible idea this is. "Relax R3."
A strange rumble, sending a tremble through the Force, makes Slip pause. It felt big, maybe a ship? He cautiously puts on his helmet, booting back up the HUD. "You didn't tell the others where we were going right, Ardrie?" He asks. "Negative." She grumbles.
Just as his focus is drawn to something not too far off moving the sand, whatever it is bursts out and it's big. Some kind of worm-snake type of creature with a lot of legs and sharp teeth. It's hunger radiates through the Force as it let's out an echoing screech and starts very clearly coming towards them. "I'm not fighting that right now, Ardrie-" his Astromech was already way ahead of him, much further down what was once likely an alleyway. "Fair enough." He starts running after her, even if he WANTED to face an unknown creature unprepared R3 had his lightsaber. Call him a bad Mandalorian for avoiding a fight but he's highly motivated to stay alive for his kid's sake (the kid's age is irrelevant his point stands).
It's not long before he starts scaling between walls, using the force to make R3 move faster ahead of him. A large cloud of dust and stone follows very closely behind them as walls slowly change to pillars and it becomes slowly more impossible to stay ahead and not risk this thing completely tearing apart the ancient site. So much for NOT fighting the creature, but he actually wants ruins left to investigate weather he has to be a ghost to do it … R3 can at least apologize for him if it comes down to that. "Ardrie, my lightsaber! Now!"
Somehow the Droid does hear him over the commotion and DOES toss it back at him, although forcing him to leap and grab it mid-air. This is a bad idea, not that it's an idea at all but if it was, it would be a bad one.
Just as the blue blade ignites, before his feet even touches the ground, the creature dives towards him, tendrils reaching out to drag it's prey to it's hungry maw. The moment he makes the first move to attack a surge of familiar excitement pumps through his blood.
________
Slip was sitting in an office chair he found, staring at the wall of large broken glass tubes.
The lights had finally ceased flickering, bathing the white and grey room in bright lights. He lifts his hand to find he's holding a glass shard, its edges pressing in his now ungloved palm. He traces it for a moment before turning in the chair and placing it onto the table.
Part of him wonders if he had vode. Not the ones he got after his buir brought him home, before that. Did he have batchmates like the clone troopers did? For a moment the wall flickers, being replaced by tubes that were whole, humanoid shapes floating in an oddly colored liquid within them. Only to flicker back to the previous broken and empty state. Slip sighs, leaning back to listen to the sound of thunder and waves crashing against the walls from the outside. Eyes locked onto one tube in particular.
Sometimes he wishes he could just… crawl back in and pretend he never existed to begin with… but not today. What would Vulpine think if he knew his buir's state of mind? … he hopes the kid never sees this part of his mind. Or finds out what he's doing for that matter.
____________
His conscious mind returns with him sitting with his back against a wall in a much darker and more inclosed space, his only light source being R3's light that's she's shining onto him while giving him a good scolding. He was holding his helmet in his hands and it was, much like the rest of his armor, covered in dirt and green… he thinks it's blood. R3's words are long lost on him since he didn't catch most of it to begin with and anything else is diminished by one fact "Ni su’cuy." He breathes. The memory slowly fades back into his mind and he cackles at the realization that not only is he alive but he WON!
The sound echoes through the dark empty beyond. He pushes himself to his feet, lighting his lightsaber to use the blue glow as another light source. Soon they find more runes and artwork, but it's the statues that makes him realize: they FOUND it, the temple he was looking for.
R3's protests and the sound of his footsteps bounce off the walls. The force pulls him forward, one step after the other, he breaks out in a sprint.
They run into much smaller versions of the creature from before but they were dealt with quickly, barely registering as a thought in his mind as he ascends some stairs. He can't even hear R3 calling out to him as he passes several more rooms and passing through others. He finally slows down, finding himself in a faintly lit room. Enough that he can put away his lightsaber and walk with ease. The force pulses excitedly, encouraging him.
The room appears to have once been a library, an old archives room, having similarities to the library at the Jedi temple. But it was empty. Abandoned like the rest of the temple. Part of him wants to joke and say this is a look at Sparker's (the Head Librarian's) worst nightmare.
That cold is back now. Then he sees it. Laying on the ground, forgotten, left behind, discarded. He knows it's a holocron, the patterns on it's surface is familiar as he bends down to trace them. But it's not like the cubes he's familiar with, no, this holocron is pyramid shaped. He picks it up. That cold settles deep inside him, wrapping around his bones. "Is this what I'm here for?" He whispers, the holocron starts to give off a faint red glow. The force sings in confirmation, though… a much… darker tone… than he was used to.
He should ask Sparker about this.
.
R3 was already waiting for him at the ship. He reminds her again to not tell Vulpine or the rest of their crew about this little trip to… what did the Force call this place? Korriban. Most importantly Luke and his council didn't need to know either.

What is your favorite word(s) and/or phrases in your Evashen conlang do far? What do they mean? (I swear I'll stop mixing up the v and the sh any day now) - @duskforged
One of the city names is Vesshelen, which literally translates to 'place of star fall', but it's in reference to it being close to a portal to other shards, so strange things and people would come through and before they fully understood the shards, they thought they were coming from other stars.
Najhen means "storm child" and is basically the same thing as "wild child" but is a common and often fond nickname.
Damen's name means lightning (without the n which marks it as a name)
Ardris means birth and ardrisil means death

"If you had been given a chance to go back to your best memory what would it be?"
Xalendyra hopped down the stairs, making sure to land both feet on each step for optimum thunkage. Her brother huffed impatiently behind her, trying to make his way down the stairs. “You’re going to make us late, little jumping bean,” he said, trying to adopt an admonishing tone but failing. He reached under her armpits and swung her up over his head as she giggled and screamed, kicking her feet.
“What’s all that racket? Did you manage to find the little urchin that’s sleeping under the stairs and stealing scraps from the table?” Her father’s voice rumbled from the kitchen.
“I did, father!” Dyra’s brother Ardris slung her over his shoulder and carried her down the rest of the way. “I think I’ll take this munchkin to the academy today so we can practice polymorph on her.”
“Noooo!” Dyra shrieked, kicking her legs halfheartedly. She laughed and reached out her hands to her father as she was brought into the kitchen. He rescued her, pulling her off Ardris’ shoulder and setting her on her feet.
“Your first day learning magic, huh, sweetpea?” Her father asked, kneeling down to her level. “Are you excited?”
“Ayup!” Dyra nodded, shaking her head so vigorously that some strands of her hair tumbled out of her braid.
“Good. I think you’ll enjoy yourself, and you might even recognize some of the other students there.”
Dyra’s little mouth twisted with insecurity, and she nodded lightly. “Maybe.”
Her father knelt down and took Dyra’s hands, turning them palms up. “Let me show you a trick so that you make friends on your first day. Look at Papa’s hands and do what I do.” Her father made a hand gesture, and waved his arm slowly through the air in a faintly triangular pattern, like a musician conducting an orchestra. His wrist was loose and seemed to bounce along to a silent rhythm. With a bluish purple spark, an illusory butterfly appeared and hovered in the air before fluttering around Dyra’s head. She laughed and poked at the bird. It scattered into an intangible cloud of glittery sparkles, then reformed as it flitted around her head.
“I can’t do that!” She protested. Over the course of a few minutes, her papa guided her hand, teaching her the gestures for the illusion spell with gentle, murmured words of encouragement. After her fifth or sixth attempt, she finally managed to conjure a butterfly.
Dyra lay on the couch in her home, lazily swirling her hand in the air in those same familiar movements, watching butterflies flutter around her living room with a nostalgic smile on her face.
(Thanks, anon! Sorry it's so late.)

Hey there, I’ve gone through and updated  Ardri’s Tale with all of the most recent sections so that people don’t have to scroll back to find them. You should expect some new stuff coming soon. Ardri’s tale is the second and more focused part of the Faerie Narrative i’m telling. The first part can be found in  Ages of Faerie . A bit more like scattered fragments of Faerie’s history and cultures it is a carefully arranged collection of prose and poetry that sets the stage for Ardri’s Tale. *** Oh, by the way. If you want to support me and my writing, my Ko-Fi can be found HERE. You are not obligated to leave a donation, but every little bit helps and is much appreciated. I also do Writing Commissions. For those who are interested, my pricing page for that can be found HERE. Commissions not only help my finances, but allow me to challenge myself and improve my writing.

18: Are you scared of spiders?
34: Who/what was your last dream about?
62: What makes you happy?
70: Is there anyone you would die for?
18 - Okay, here's the thing. Spiders? Love those little bitches. They eat mosquitoes and gnats, which I don't like. I think I like spiders more than pretty much any bugs because they're often fuzzy and have more character than the typical ant or fly. The novel Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky is also one of my top books and it deals with a world where spiders are the most developed species.
Butterflies tho? Those fuckers freak me out.
34 - I bought bananas but didn't use them so they all turned brown in my cabinet. Some lady made a note on a clipboard.
62 - it's currently about 80° F (27 C) out with a nice breeze and some nice cloud cover. There's lots of birds chirping and calling out for each other. People are walking dogs. So I guess all that
70 - yeah, the abstract concept of future generations
