“mother, / when you grew me into garden / you watered colors too inviting. / shades of earth proved the palette of prey. may / I paint myself with poison, / mother?” … “perhaps then / your laws will rule me / too deadly to touch” — from “Aposematic” by Anna Maria

Bees saying 'back off or get stung'!
Bumblebees sometimes raise a leg, or two, when they feel threatened. I first came across this phenomenon myself when following a cuckoo bumblebee with a camera, trying to get a good close-up shot (below). Field cuckoo bumblebee (Bombus campestris) male, Spain, with raised midleg. Photo by Raymond JC Cannon Macro photographers like myself are usually very respectful of our targets, but sometimes…

Animals having bright colours in order to ward off predators is called an ‘Aposematic Mechanism’.
It can also be shortened to just aposematic.

Seven Red Suns biomechanical dragon concept, very rough sketch, design will likely be changed and refined.
Depicted in normal colouration (top) and threat display/darksun colouration (bottom). Artificial chromatophores permit colour changing at will or under preprogrammed circumstances.
Credits @medi-bee for making me think of dragon iterators in the first place, and @ressioo for inspiring the threat display colour scheme.

Raf latched on to the cheap dollar store star-framed sunglasses because he half-consciously felt that the 10 foot radius AoE tackiness they emitted would serve as an adequate deterrent against the kind of folks who'd to chum up to him for the optics.
Unfortunately, and wholly unbeknownst to him, those clunky plastic frames have been assimilated into his natural charm, providing a +2 charisma modifier, instead.

Aposematism is when a poisonous or otherwise gross/ dangerous/ unprofitable species uses pretty, bright colours (or some other noticeable signal) to warn predators “Do Not Eat!”
Unfortunately, many predators are not born knowing this, so they generally have to learn through trying something new and having a very unpleasant experience!
AKA: aposematism (usually) relies on predator learning!

the calculus does change a little bit if it's the first snake species i ever encountered up close back to see me again (coral snake, antivenom only recently started to be produced again) but even then, stick wins. they're very polite. bats aren't very polite.

What's the story behind the hazard sign on the feedbacker? Did V1 just feel stylish or is it your take on the feedbackers look?
i really just decided to add it to give the feedbacker a significantly different look than v1's standard arm, but i like to think it is something that v1 created in order to have a much larger surface to parry from. i think of the springplate as being less accurate than the feedbacker's knuckles, but it's a safer bet if it can't bank on being precise in the moment. v1 chose the hazard stripes for it because i just think it loves bold, contrasting patterns and overly bright colors lol

#2106 - Copidita sp.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Probably C. sloanei. The aposematic colouration is honest despite the common name - Oedemerids contain canthardin, a rather nasty blistering agent.
Copidita is a genus of False Blister Beetle found in the SW and East of Australia, the West coast of North America, and a few places in Central and South America, which is certainly not a distribution I've seen before. The genus has been around since at least the Eocene, as there's a fossil one known from Colorado. There's some evidence from other fossils in amber that the Oedemerids originally fed on cycad pollen before switching to angiosperms.
The Oedemerids in general are pollen-feeders, with over 1500 known species, mostly Oriental and Neotropical. The larvae feed on rotting wood. One species, Nacerda melanura, is native to Europe but has become a problem in other parts of the world where the larvae destroy salt-water soaked wood at piers. They're also apparently partial to urine-soaked telegraph poles.
