justice league dark apokolips war
major spoilers
i've been watching a lot of DC shit lately. lost of john constantine. and man does this thing have a great opening for me. seemingly a focus on john and raven? hell yea, really missed raven content after watching teen titans years back.
damn, gory. i mean right up my interest (yes i'm twisted). someone escaping missing a leg, losing 1 arm? yea, for some daft reason that interests me too much. what are the results? how does it feel? how does one react and recover?
oh, batman supposedly is evil now. oh, and disarmed wonderwoman (i think) still functions. or it's lois, that might make more sense.
raven don't give no fucks, my favourite. something tells me we'll see apocalypse/darkside fight trigon in this.
oh, very dead starfire. and a fucked up but alive nightning. oh, always fun to see more Harley quin. oh, his ex was not harley, it was shark king... neat. always more queer then i expect.
drain the planets core. yea that would kill the planet, but why? there are far easier ways to do something like that.
mmm, some where not as dead as i thought, but i don't think there's a lot of them left.
"oh, you hurt me, now we're having fun". such a fun trope.
the flashes fate is both tragic and fucking hilarious.
"techno magic. feels like taking a test you haven't studied for. luckily i cheat" and this is why i love john.
you might have a deal with john, but he has a trick up his sleave. because he always has a trick. and like most of his tricks, they work... mostly... ish. though i wonder if the mostly is for real. seems a bit shark jumpy.
yea, called it twice. also the post death scene is most fitting. of course batman had a plan B that works.
why does raven get eagle sounds? because corvids don't sound nice enough? they sound fucking epic.
no one else would be this angry at being alive.
called the same thing... again?
those are some good lasts words.
not a fan of this ending. sure, i may not like a not great ending, but make it matter. this way you just undo all the progress. nothing they achieved actually mattered. don't retcon the ending at the ending of your movie.

Tumblr media
i'm not really sure what the main thrust of this post is, but this yj98 arc has been haunting me literally since I read it months ago, so I've put together a brief(ish) overview of the salient points and the questions it's left me with
aka
that time young justice was sent to a literal intergalactic war front
aka
young justice has even more complex ptsd than you probably thought!!
yj98 #35
Tumblr media
the premise is that there's a global war against imperiex, spearheaded by president (blech) luthor. as minors, they can't be drafted into it
(i hunted around and apparently Our Worlds at War, with Imperiex as the big bad, is the broader context, which i didn't feel like reading for this)
Tumblr media
instead, they're going to be attached to a "sort of super medical unit" called the "paradocs"
Tumblr media
the way they're persuaded to accept their role (instead of?? fighting on the front lines?? jeez kon) is to conceive of themselves as saving active-combat superheroes for their children they're leaving at home (creating an implicit distinction between those children and themselves, which i find sad)
Tumblr media
yj is specifically a "search and rescue team"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
with a civilian cissie king-jones as their qualified emergency medical technician (so her public persona is an olympic champion, actress, and volunteer veteran of an intergalactic war???)
is cissie the only one performing medical services then? do any of the others pick anything up from her, if these missions last long enough? (do tim and cissie bond as the only non-powered people they know going into a space war?)
yj98 #36
Tumblr media
they've run "a couple" successful missions behind enemy lines: what does this mean for the duration of this role?
(i'm not sure if reading Our Worlds at War would help determine how long this all lasted, but if someone who has read it has answers, i'd love to know)
also, were they in space the whole time or going back in between? (i also really really want to know what batman thinks of his protégé being part of a space war. related, did cassie tell her mom??)
---
Superboy Vol 4 #91: War Letters gives some context to this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(kon putting on a brave face!!)
but also:
even as paramedics they were participating in active combat, fighting off scavengers
the lack of specifics, the mention of the fact that he's met "a lot of interesting cats in the field," and of "things" he's seen—there's a sense that he's seen a lot but not enough yet for it to no longer be shocking. or, that what they're seeing is so savage that it never ceases to be shocking.
this also implies that they've met and rescued a slew of people from across the universe. does yj have intergalactic connections? do random alien soldiers remember this small group of earth children that saved them?
this panel also shows kon (and likely the rest of them) amidst recovering jl members. what does the broader jl think of this group of kids in an acknowledged war zone, seeing them beaten down like this? (it's unclear whether kon actually went and rescued kyle rayner here or is just helping him around the medical area, but there must be some sort of lasting impression from this)
they get diverged from their rescue mission and end up on apokolips
Tumblr media
bart experiences death when one of his "scouts" is killed—this has a lasting impression on him (addressed later) and kon blames himself, since it was his decision to chase after steel that landed them here. do the two of them ever talk about this? (they don't in yj at least)
---
yj98 #36 contd.
Tumblr media
kon's accusation shows that this arc happened right after the drama between batman and the jla during tower of babel (the secret contingency plan drama)
Tumblr media
and after batman's betrayal of tim's identity to spoiler (rip tim being betrayed on multiple fronts)
Tumblr media
(tim putting on a strong front :'))
Tumblr media
i find it interesting that tim considers his state "a world of grays" in contrast to kon's "black and white" attitude. balancing a multitude of considerations is a "world of grays?" anyway, tim staring death in the face and admitting he's scared :')
Tumblr media
and then tim gets to watch lil lobo die (he does technically come back but!) and says explicitly that another part of innocence he didn't know he had died with lobo. this can't be his first time witnessing a death given gotham's everything, so is it because this is the first time he's watched a comrade die (and so brutally too)?
yj98 #37
Tumblr media
and then! we get extended(?) mental torture on apokolips, enough to drive to tim to attempted homicide (both in the dream world and out of it)
Tumblr media
(he was made to watch kon and cassie get murdered brutally in front of him jsyk)
and once he's out:
Tumblr media
(does this ever haunt tim? that he almost broke batman's one rule? also parallels with dick beating the joker to death later on tim's behalf)
yj98 #38
the fallout:
Tumblr media
we see that after experiencing his scout's death on apokolips, bart's been left with a fear of death strong enough to get him to leave yj (i don't actually know how this gets resolved?? it must happen in his solo bc he just sort of reappears a few mini arcs later...)
("i quit for a bunch of reasons ... but not a single one of them had to do with being afraid i'd get killed," cissie you're sooooo well-adjusted. she doesn't think bart's valid rip)
Tumblr media
this is the moment where tim quits yj because he can't deal with their lack of trust (oof) and because“i don’t need the grief of young justice,” referring to everything else going on in tim's life (batman betraying his identity to spoiler)
(he'll lose them later on anyway—does it haunt him that he came back?)
Tumblr media
(it's sweet that kon has someone he feels he can talk to and ask advice from)
i'm not sure if tim ever gets that apology
tldr: i kind of want one or more of yj to end up as a paramedic

I know nothing about Darkseif except what you've explained, but didn't you mention he has a son? I submit: Enemies-to-Lovers redemption arc between that guy and Danny.
Bonus, Danny is penpals with someone in the Teen Titans and they've been giving him advice without actually knowing Danny's true power or who the other party is.
HE DOES HAVE A SON!!
Ok so I myself don’t know tOO much about him but the entire thing with his son is a whole fuckin tHing.
In short summary: The rulers of Apokolips and New Genesis were gonna swap sons as a means of a truce (spoiler alert: Darkseid didn’t keep the truce.)
Darkseid took All Father’s son and tortured the fucker and trapped him in so many various torture devices that he eventually became a master at escape. He became Mister Miracle, otherwise known as Scott Free. I know a LOT about mister miracle but he isn’t the person in question here.
The person in question’s name is Orion the War God. It truly depends on what story you read. Either he is able to quell his rage and goes on adventures with a bunch of New Gods and helps with issues that normally center around earth, or he cannot quell his anger and rage and embraces his heritage. He overthrows Darkseid as the Ruler of Apokolips and goes to harness the Anti-Life equation to destroy Earth.
I really haven’t read much that focuses on Orion besides a few New Gods comics by Jack Kirby. They are truly a work of art.
Tumblr media
(Orions helmet is sometimes steel, sometimes purple, sometimes blue. Gotta love color inconsistency. Oh and for those who have only watched the Young Justice tv show, that red fucker is what Forager’s original design looks like.)
I love love love the interpretation of Orion in the Young Justice cartoon. His primary debut is in Rocket’s character Arc in the 4th season. The dude is autistic and is used as a vessel to help Rocket grow as a person and help her stop her neurotypical biases. In the show he tries his best to be a good person even though his entire bloodline and race fully goes against that morality. It’s really hard but he grows as a person as well and learns to accept himself as he is and use his rage to help others. (Oh also he’s literally one of the best autistic characters I’ve ever seen in animated media. Like genuinely it made me really happy to see that they went above and beyond and let this man kick some ass and show he’s powerful as hell.)
I love YJ Orion with my heart and soul. That version of Danny I could absolutely see have an enemies to lovers arc with Danny. The comic version is really a pure villain and even worse than Darkseid.
Also everyone say thank you to Jack Kirby for his wild ass designs because look at this fuckers outfit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He looks so funky. Imagine a man with that outfit meeting Danny. First thing Danny would comment on would be his wild ass clothing choices.
———
Oh I love the idea that Danny is a pen pal with a titan. Big question is who? It would be neat for Beast Boy or Raven to be his penpal and slowly get some clues that something is off with this kid. Not off enough to say “wow this kid is a superhero.” But in the sense that they might think something is off in his living situation. They’re both glad that they have a friend they can talk to about just mundane stuff and not have to worry about superheroism for the few minutes a day they read and respond to each others letters/emails.

Hi, I'm pretty new to the fourth world so I haven't read everything (including everything by Kirby himself) but I have been wondering about something: a lot of DC writers, especially post Kirby, present the new gods as inherently good/having a tendency towards free will (highfather) or evil/having a tendency towards cruelty and oppression (darkseid), as if this is part of their nature as gods (the same way that say, it's in the nature of Ares to be the god of war for example. He literally exists to wedge war). But at the same time we see instances in the lore of gods switching "sides" like barda leaving apokolips, or even darkseid falling in love with suli and having agreed to change his ways before she died (I was also curious about your take on her and their relationship btw). Orion himself is such a case, but at the same time he seems to be fighting his violent tendencies at times. So are the gods of new genesis "good" and of apokolips "evil" because they are deities and it's part of their nature, or is it a mater of choice?
Sorry if this is a dumb question! From what I've read from Kirby I always felt like it was the later, but you seem much more knowledgeable than me on the subject so I was wondering what's your take on this?
(also sorry if the grammar is weird or if there are any typos, english isn't my first language)
Okay fantastic question, and I think you've read more than you're giving yourself credit for. And I will also admit I haven't read all of Kirby's Fourth World stuff. I've really stuck to New Gods which in all honesty is not that many issues. So I talk big, but I'm also not an expert. I know the stuff I know, but I there's plenty I don't know too.
So my take on it is that as far as original Jack Kirby Fourth World goes, free will is what is good. It's what the Anti-Life Equation seeks to eradicate and why Darkseid believes it will give him ultimate power. Already on Apokolips there's tons and tons of oppression, and Darkseid's rule is more than law. It's the way of life there. Children are raised to live for him, fight for him, die for him. We see that with Scott in Granny Goodness' Orphanage up until the point he meets Himon and escapes. And (spoiler alert) even at the precipice of his freedom, Darkseid very interestingly give Scott a choice to stay and become something greater on Apokolips, or continue running away. There's more to it than this, but I always feel like that's an unexpected twist there at the end.
As for Barda, she grew up on Apokolips and became the head of an elite force under Darkseid. She believed in him, like for a very long time. I'm not up on my Mister Miracle reading, so someone else will have to say for sure, but I gather she may have one of the most complex feelings about what it is to serve Darkseid.
And then we've got an interesting case from New Genesis in the young boy Esak. He was one of the shining youths that Highfather saw as the future. Much later at the end of the story (after Kirby had been truly hurt by DC and probably amongst other life events changed him, as all people change over time), Esak winds up on Apokolips looking to serve Darkseid. He had a tragic accident and bitterness entered his heart to the point where he reveled in the destruction he could cause. And what set him on a course of evil wasn't even Darkseid's doing. It was just a thing that happened.
So all this is to say that I don't think the majority of these characters start good or bad just because of the place they were born to. Many may have tendencies one way or another by blood, but most either fall into whatever society or culture they were brought up in, and a few standouts looked around and decided they wanted something different.

Spoilers for DC: Mech #1!
In this AU, people in the DCU developed mechs after a deadly attack by a Parademon at the end of World War II.  But it seems that even the Rogues make use of them in the present day to commit crimes and do shenanigans!  Though Len's comment to the Flash about "a steel coffin" is a little worrying -- did the Rogues do that to him, or did a previous Flash simply happen to fall in the line of duty?  Either way, it's interesting that the two sides apparently have/had a deal about allowing the Rogues to operate outside Central City, and curious that the Flash breaks it without explanation.
I can't figure out if the green and yellow mech is Mark's or Roscoe's, as it looks like it could be either (is that a drill head or meant to look like a sorceror's cap?) and whoever's piloting it looks pretty weird in the scene of the Rogues tied up.  Wish that was a bit clearer.
And then towards the end Apokolips begins an invasion of Earth, planning to use humanity to power their Anti-Life engine.  Kal-El shows up to help people in a mech of his own, though Batman is intensely suspicious of aliens and holds him at bay.  But it seems likely that the Earth will need all the help it can get, so they'll probably have to join forces to fight against Apokolips...it'd be fun if the Rogues get involved in the battle too.

The Multiverse List!
So, I said a while back that I'd post a list of universes within the Kryptonverse Multiverse, and the day for that is now! I've had this list for a couple of years by now (Google Docs says February 2020), and I've been picking at it every now and then, starting by going through the list on the Marvel wiki (a very, very long list) and then the DC ones (a much, much shorter but more confusing list, thanks to all the Crisis events). Of course, that would leave out quite a few universes in the series, considering they'd rarely have an existing crossover reality number with either Marvel or DC, in which case I came up with my own. Some were easy, like the Ben 10 world (Earth-10000, for Ben 10K), others I went the boring route and just used the numbering convention (taking the date it launched or the birthday of the main creative on the project), and some I just plain don't remember how I came up with (the ML one is a good example).
Anyway, this is not the full list, as some of the universes revealed would be a spoiler. The premise here is that these are dimensions Victor and Reed have catalogued (not necessarily visited), but I'm obviously not presenting this list in their voices. This is strictly out of context and just my own notes. If and when the Avengers discover the information the pair have gathered in their universe-hopping plan, I may have some notes from Victor and Reed's POV. Probably just for the more unique ones, though.
Without further ado (and under a read more in case you don't wanna get a bit spoiled), here you go!
Earth-1:
The main DC Comics continuity, as it currently exists (whatever form that takes).
Impossible for most interdimensional travelers to visit or interact with, but typically the source of many Multiverse-altering events.
Earth-12:
The world of the DC Animated Universe, from Batman: the Animated Series till Justice League Unlimited, plus the feature films and specials explicitly stated to happen in the same continuity.
Earth-16 (Ravenverse):
The world of Young Justice, in conjunction with the Teen Titans animated series. The original home of Earth-199999’s Kara Zor-El.
As seen in “Of Darkness and the Light”
Earth-25:
A cartoonish world full of animal people. Spider-Ham’s home.
Earth-31:
The world of the current continuity of DC films, from Man of Steel onwards.
Earth-38:
The Arrowverse combined, with all its various shows and spin-offs. Called Earth-Prime or Earth-1 in the shows, but to avoid any confusion with the main DC comics universe, I gave it CW Supergirl’s reality number.
Earth-52:
The world of the films spanning from Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox to Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (in this house, we don’t talk about Apokolips War).
Earth-65:
Spider-Gwen/Ghost-Spider’s home dimension.
Earth-89:
The Burtonverse, as seen in the Batman 1989 film and its sequels.
Earth-249:
The world of Miraculous Ladybug, rich with superheroes – most important among them the wielders of the magical jewels known as Miraculouses
Earth-616:
The mainline Marvel Comics continuity, whatever form that currently takes.
Earth-1048:
The combined realities of Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and Marvel’s Avengers game. Kind of a messy, unstable one on account of all the time travel and cosmic energy events.
Earth-1154 (Netherrealm):
A fusion of two previously separate, very broken universes: the Injustice universe, where Superman became a despotic tyrant after the Joker caused the death of his wife and unborn child; and the Mortal Kombat universe, home to such icons as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden. Each shattered by straying so far from their respective frameworks that they became almost unrecognizable, they were knit together to avoid cosmic destruction. Combined post-canon of Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat 11.
“Mistaken Identity” takes place here.
Earth-1218:
Actual, real life Earth. Hidden to all but the highest of cosmic entities in the Multiverse, this reality cannot be visited or interacted with, as any possible change or damage inflicted upon it could irrevocably alter the Multiverse or even destroy it altogether.
Earth-1610:
Home to Miles Morales’ version of Spider-Man, and the centerpiece to the Spiderverse event that would bring several Spider-powered heroes together.
Earth-8096:
The reality of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Wolverine and the X-Men
Earth-10000:
Home to the original/prime version of Ben Tennyson, wielder of the Omnitrix, and nexus world to the subsection of the Multiverse known as the Omniverse.
Earth-12041:
The reality of Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble
Earth-14512:
Home of Peni Parker, her telepathic, radioactive spider, and her SP//dr mech suit
Earth-90214:
The Noir Universe, where the Marvel heroes surfaced in the 1920s and 1930s, and fought organized crime in those times. Home of Spider-Man Noir.
Earth-96283:
The combined realities of the Raimi Spider-Man films, the pre-Days of Future Past X-Men series, and the Fantastic Four films.
Earth-120703:
The combined realities of the Webb Amazing Spider-Man films, Venom 1 and 2, and the Deadpool films, for maximum bi/pan chaos
Earth-199999 (Kryptonverse):
Once the Marvel Cinematic Universe as seen in its various films and TV shows, this universe has been heavily modified into a melting pot of elements and characters from dozens of alternate realities, forcibly made to mesh together by Celestials in a delicate balance.
The entire Kryptonverse series takes place here, of course.
Earth-1222003 (Invincible):
The world of Invincible (inspired by the TV show, not the comics)
As seen in “Just One Dimension Over”
(I had to nix a handful because character limits apparently? Anyway, I'll update with more later!)

The funniest thing ever is when a series gets one (1) F Bomb and the writers have to decide who gets it, especially when the cast is primarily 18 or younger. This can be in live action or cartoons. Cause it’s impossible not to acknowledge that the writers actually had to think and debate who deserves to say “Fuck”more.
It’s why one of my favourite scenes in Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is when (spoilers) Raven gets the Fbomb. Like yes girl, your life sucks. You do indeed deserve to say fuck.

Apokolips War: Damian Style
Despite all odds, Dick got better. It was a slow recovery from the madness of the Lazarus Pit, but he had made progress. For now, instead of the snarling monster, the true Dick Grayson seemed to have won out.
He was still unpredictable to anyone who was not Damian. That, with the enhanced strength of the Pit, left grayson truly dangerous. The straitjacket stayed, but Dick was never violent with Damian. Dick's natural inclination to be a wholesome suburban mother to his little brother was returning, allowing Damian to spend more time with him.
“Good morning Grayson,” Damian murmured, as Dick looked up to see the person entering his room. Dick didn't reply - he never did - but he smiled.
“I have brought breakfast and the repulsive grapefruit juice that you like,” Damain continued. Dick giggled as Damian continued to bemoan the existence of the grapefruit. “A truly odious thing, it is. On the scale of unnaturalness, I would put it just below Todd's inhuman amounts of body hair.”
Dick laughed, happily and freely. Damian smiled as well, before making sure that no one else was around to see him. Todd and Drake's childhood teasings of him resembling a frog still rankled.
Damian settled down and freed Dick's restraints. “Here Grayson, I have prepared a “Todd Sandwich” - peanut butter and potato chips, the boor. I have prepared a mayonnaise sandwich for myself, à la Drake. Nothing but pure mayonnaise.”
They munched in silence, until Damian cleared his throat. “Don't tell anyone,” he started, and Dick looked unamusedly at him. Damian chuckled. “Sorry. But I resurrected Todd and Drake too.”
Dick looked shocked. “J- jay...bird? Tim-my?”
Damian looked stunned. “Yes. I accessed their tissue samples that father kept stored away. Todd is...violent, but I am confident that he will recover his wits. He has been through this before. Drake is-”
Dick looked panicked. “Timmy?”
Damian snorted. “Drake is sleeping. As in actively snoring, the fool. For some reason, the Pit has little effect on his brain. I believe it is because his brain has already acclimatized to the copious amounts of coffee that he drank.”
Dick laughed happily and hugged Damian. Raven decided to peek in and peered distrustfully at Dick. “Need a hand, Damian?”
“No, this is simply Grayson being Grayson,” Damian muttered.
Dick picked up Damian's sandwich and prodded his lips with it. “Eat, eat,” he insisted.
“See?” Damian said. “Just Grayson.”
Raven rolled her eyes before leaving. Damian relaxed and lolled over Grayson's lap. “Oh my god, Grayson,” Damian suddenly said, “I just found out the most disturbing thing. Did you know that Constantine is getting back together with King Shark?”
Dick stopped combing through Damian's hair to laugh. Damian joined in, trying not to imagine Constantine's plight. Perhaps, he thought as they laughed together, there might be hope after all.

Damian saying l wanted you to rule with me because l had feelings for you was so soft. Raven crying and saying l love you was painfully soft. Him forgetting about Superman in an instant when she fainted was so soft. Her almost killing Luthor for throwing Damian was so soft. The last scene was bittersweet but still soft. I just have a lot of feelings okay... Still crying and hoping that my babies stay together in the next universe also.

Okay, can we just talk about how Justice League Dark: Apokolipse War Raven had absolutely no chill? I mean, the stray 'Fuck this' and 'Great pep-talk' lines were one thing (that I absolutely loved), but when Lex shocks her boyfriend once, she gets all hulk-smash, let's crush this bitch, and she doesnt say Fuck you, or Die, or I hate you, nope, she goes straight for
'No one will Mourn you'
How fucking metal was that?!?? Raven was so done in this movie
