you never liked the freshman student who entered the same high school as you.

the one who made all the boys become green with envy over-

the one who made all the girls practically fall to their knees for him-

sung jinwoo.

despite how all the girls went crazy over his dashing good looks and charming smile, you sadly never saw his appeal. for you personally, he looked just like any other guy. nothing about him stood out to you-

especially not his perfectly styled ebony locks of hair,

or the grey eyes that you swore sometimes glowed purple in some instances,

or the full lips that remained in a permanent smile whenever he met your gaze-

yeah, there was absolutely nothing appealing about him!

you suppose you should count yourself lucky on how you didn’t share the same class with him, being in a different homeroom as you simply saw him in passing within the hallways and heard stories about him from the gossiping girls who wished to date him.

as you trail your eyes away from your open textbook, the sounds of a certain commotion was heard as one of your classmates runs back into class. her friends were comforting her as angry tears fell down her face.

“what gives?! just what is up with that sung jinwoo guy! doesn’t he realize that i’m practically the most beautiful girl in school here!”

ah, ji-yeon was throwing another tantrum again, running her hands across her luscious, brown locks of hair with her blue eyes fuming after what you assumed was sung jinwoo’s rejection.

filled with amusement from witnessing the spectacle, you trail your eyes over to ji-yeon and her lackeys, ara and cho. “he kept telling me that he couldn’t possibly give me a chance; that he was already in love with someone else, yet refused to relinquish her identity to me!”

“ah, he probably didn’t want you to bully her, ji-yeon.”

“and come on, you shouldn’t feel so upset! you can do so much better than him!”

“but i don’t want anyone else…! i want him!”

you had to bite back your laughter the moment ji-yeon stomps her feet against the ground, “and that’s what pisses me off the most! who even is she, managing to steal jinwoo away from me like that?!”

you could no longer hold back your laughter, making a snort escape from your parted lips in response to ji-yeon’s anger. she hears you and turns to face you, tossing back her hair in response. “what’s this?”

she lets out a hiss of your name, “how dare a wallflower like you eavesdrop on my conversation.” the girl gains up on you with her two friends in tow.

“i didn’t eavesdrop. you were the one who kept airing out your business in class.”

she clicks her tongue in response to your words, “it’s lunch time, are you really that much of a loser, eating all alone in class like this?”

“no, i simply didn’t want to eat in the cafeteria and be bothered by idiots like you. but i guess even with my best efforts, i couldn’t escape you at all.”

your gaze was unflinching even as ji-yeon raised up her perfectly manicured nails to strike you, ready to take the hit when the sight of someone tall stops ji-yeon’s hand from making contact with your cheek.

your eyes go wide, seeing sung jinwoo himself hold ji-yeon’s hand in a vice grip. his eyes were glaring down at her, making you see that same familiar glow.

his voice was filled with authority when he lightly shoves ji-yeon away from you. “that’s enough.”

“sung, what are you doing here?” ji-yeon’s voice comes out as strained as ara and cho took a stance behind her, ready to support her even when they felt intimidated by jinwoo’s glare.

“i heard you throwing a tantrum and decided to intervene before you did something stupid.”

ji-yeon’s face became a vibrant shade of red, its scarlet hue depicting her embarrassment and shame at being scolded by the man she had a crush on. with a huff and a final flip of her hair, she walks away from him, hearing her high heeled shoes tap against the linoleum flooring of the school.

“hmph, i suppose you’re right, sung. that bitch isn’t worth getting expelled for.”

ara and cho follow from close behind her, yet you were the one that stopped jinwoo from following after them.

“it’s okay, just hearing her complaints was more than enough for me.” even if you didn’t like him (and no! you were not in denial!) you didn’t want him to do anything that would further jeopardize his education.

he was already under suspicion due to his shady past, disappearing for two years before returning unexpectedly-

despite how odd he was, you truly didn’t hate him enough to want to see him fail.

in the end, he relaxes his stance and looks down at you, eyes still glowing with that strange, purple hue. you swallow thickly, but did not look away from him, maintaining eye contact with jinwoo as you waited for his next words.

instead, he ends up shocking you when he places a hand against your cheek, caressing it softly while asking you, “are you alright?”

you give him a nod in response, all while trying to hide the heat from your cheeks. “yes, i’m fine.”

you shiver when he lets out a rich chuckle in response. “that’s good.”

looking away from him in hopes of calming down your rapidly beating heart, you ask him, “why did you come to my rescue?”

he remains silent for a few moments before gently giving your head a few pats.

“because i would hate to see a bruise blossoming on that pretty face of yours.”

his admission was enough to make you do a double take, looking up at him with wide eyes while catching his smile.

“do you have any club activities later today?”

your mouth was still dry, and because of this fact, you were afraid to speak. this was what prompted you to shake your head in response to his question, earning yet another smile from him.

“good. how about you keep me company and watch me do track on the bleachers?”

his question leaves you gaping in response, and jinwoo didn’t even bother waiting for your answer when the 5-minute bell rang, alerting you to the end of lunch as your classmates slowly filled the classroom once more. you wanted to call out to jinwoo and tell him how you had much better things to do than watch him running around in circles-

but his smile when he looks back at you while giving you a wave manages to make your heart flutter in response.

dammit to hell-

this boy had you wrapped around his fingers after all.

the sun was slowly setting as you found yourself on the bleachers, watching jinwoo and his track team practice their endurance and speed for the next competition.

as you sipped at the bottle of water jinwoo had given you, you couldn’t deny that he was a beautiful runner.

he was graceful, while maintaining a good speed. he never once appeared to be out of breath, even when he was working up a sweat.

during his run, you notice the way the upperclassmen kept gesturing at you while talking to jinwoo. he gives the senior a smirk before telling him a few words, making them all smile at you in response.

you had a sneaking suspicion that they were talking about you, and the thought alone was enough to make you bristle in response. you were on edge when the track team finally finished their practice, with their coach commending them on their good work as he allowed them all to return home.

jinwoo makes his way back to you while extending his hand out to you. “water, please.”

you look down at your half empty bottle of water. “what- but… i already drank from this?”

“so?” jinwoo gives you a smirk before taking the bottle of water from your hand, uncapping it as he worked on drinking the rest of it. you were captivated by the movements of his lips, emptying the bottle with greedy gulps as you watch the droplets of water slide down his chin and onto his throat…

you immediately snap out of your reveries when jinwoo meets your gaze. as if sensing your thoughts, he tosses the empty water bottle into the bin with his smirk growing wider in response, “what are you looking at?”

“n-nothing!”

you ignore the heat felt against your cheeks and step out of the bleachers, feeling jinwoo place a steady hand against your waist and shoulder as he helped you back on the ground. he flashes you a wide grin before picking up his duffel bag.

“come on, i’ll take you home.”

he interlocks his fingertips together with yours, pulling you closer to him as he walked out of the school with you. by now, your heart was pounding within your chest, feeling deeply affected by his close proximity.

“jinwoo.”

you say his first name out loud, making jinwoo stiffen in response. feeling proud at being able to make him lose his cool, you proceed to ask him.

“what did you tell our seniors during practice? they kept looking at me, laughing while giving me winks each time they ran past me.”

you look up at jinwoo, seeing him scratch the tip of his nose as a light blush was settled against his cheeks. he remains silent for a few extra beats, as if carefully considering his words before confessing to you,

“i told them that you were my girlfriend.”

your brain seemed to short circuit in response to his answer, unable to fully comprehend what was going on as you sorted through your emotions.

you felt…

annoyed,

confused,

but perhaps above all else-

you felt happy.

“y-you, are you joking, sung jinwoo?”

your pout was evident when jinwoo looks back down at you, eyes glowing a faint purple once more before he leans down closer to your height.

“if you don’t believe me, how about i show you just how serious i am…?”

somehow understanding what he meant, you close your eyes in response, allowing jinwoo’s lips to perfectly slot against yours in a sweet kiss-

but little did you know, you were once jinwoo’s lover in another timeline; a timeline that he now spent years correcting as he made an oath to himself to bring you back to him, no matter what the cost may be.

{ watch me fall above like a vicious dove | they don’t see me come, who can blame them? | never stopped to see me try, so i never had to lie }

you should have stayed home after all...

but how were you supposed to know that a group of rogue hunters were targeting you for the sole purpose of hurting your lover of 3 years-

sung jinwoo.

your day started out normal enough; you had gone into the city with plans to buy some groceries for the week. with your eyes solely focused on your phone as you wrote out your list from within your notes app. with jinwoo's shadow soldiers kept well hidden from inside your own shadow, you saw no reason to have fear or sense even an inkling of danger.

yet that all changes when you felt a particularly hard and blunt object smash into the back of your skull, sending waves of pain to course through your very veins as you lost consciousness. your face nearly lands against the harsh concrete of the sidewalk when your captors decides to capture you in their arms before bringing you back to their base of operations...

a group of rowdy men were seen within the abandoned warehouse, taking a drag of their cigarettes the moment their lackeys brought back your unconscious body.

with a grunt, the men toss your body against the concrete floors of the warehouse, your hair making a veil across your features as they remained hidden from the other hunters' view.

it was a scrawny hunter named seo-jun who decides to step forward while pushing up his glasses, looking down at your unconscious body. "do-yun, who is she? and why were you so set on capturing her?"

the leader, do-yun, flashes a smirk against the timid man, placing a hand on his shoulder, "why don't you admire her for a bit, then we'll have some fun with her..."

seo-jun gulps before making his way closer to you, curious as to who you were as the other men take a step back. his breathing was labored when he gingerly brushes back your hair. he sees the blood pouring from your head from how your body was suddenly dropped against the cold concrete floors of the warehouse, yet he couldn't deny how beautiful you still looked.

seo-jun knew that he recognized you, and when he finally realized your identity, he sharply inhales, feeling his blood turn cold at the mere sight of you.

"are you insane?! you captured the tenth s-ranker's lover! you just put a target on our heads-"

seo-jun feels his eyes widen when he sees your shadow lengthening, using his senses as he falls backwards, narrowly avoid the dagger that shoots out from the shadow.

he may have avoided the dagger, but the same couldn't be said for the men that had captured you. immediately, his eyes go wide when the blade lands within the base of his throat, the blood loss making him land with an audible 'thump!' against the ground.

seo-jun could already tell that the man was dead as his partner began to run out of the warehouse, fearing for his life. he couldn't move, feeling a sudden coldness surround him as the s-rank hunter appears from the depths of your shadows.

no words were spoken as sung jinwoo takes a protective stance in front of you, brandishing his two daggers in response as the ends of his trench coat sways in tune with his movements. do-yun and the rest of his crew didn't get a chance to even react when jinwoo moved so swiftly that it looked like he simply disappeared from seo-jun's eyes.

a wave of nausea hits him as the rest of his crew was left with a deep wound against their chests, a cut forming a large X over their chest as the deep red blood stains their cold, lifeless bodies. seo-jun nearly puked at the intense, coppery scent that fills the area.

"you." sung jinwoo's voice was filled with malice, wisps of shadows surrounding the entirety of his large frame the moment he takes great strides to reach the meek man.

"y-y-yes?"

"if you want to live, then heal her."

seo-jun nearly wet his pants in response to his demands, but eagerly nods his head, crawling closer to you as he placed a hand over your injured head. he allows the golden glow to surround you, with the wound disappearing as your breathing became less labored with pain.

he continues healing you until jinwoo's hand against the back of his shirt was felt lifting his lanky body away from you, tossing seo-jun's form aside as he lands against the harsh, cold floors with a grunt.

the impact causes his glasses to go askew as he sits up with a wince, watching jinwoo as he carefully lifts up your body within his embrace. his glowing eyes were filled with a love and devotion to you, and it was clear that he would do anything to keep you safe.

as seo-jun slowly gets back up to his feet, he hears jinwoo calling out your name before letting out a chuckle when you stir within his embrace.

"i'm in a good mood right now... i thought about killing you off, too, but ultimately decided against it because you healed her."

seo-jun didn't know what prompted him to speak with the hunter known as the shadow monarch when he continues to ask, "and, w-what would have happened if i wasn't a healer?"

jinwoo looks back at him with his eyes glowing a deeper purple. "then you would be left bleeding out with the rest of your crew."

the murderous intent was enough to bring seo-jun to his knees, filled with terror as he bowed down to him.

"i-i-i apologize for what we have done to your lover. please... continue to have mercy on me...!"

but his pleas fall on deaf ears the moment jinwoo ignores him, going towards the fallen hunters who planned to do unspeakable things to you. seo-jun glances behind him to see jinwoo tightening his hold on your body before speaking to those corpses.

"arise."

a sense of dread fills seo-jun's soul as jinwoo's dark voice echoes throughout the area, bringing forth 3 shadow soldiers who appeared like living skeletons as they floated away from their once living vessel. a smug expression was seen against the shadow monarch's features as he gives new commands to his newly formed soldiers.

"you all shall spend the rest of your life protecting my queen as punishment. this is only a small part of your retribution, do you have any objections?"

as if drawn to jinwoo, the shadows bow down to him without question, losing all form of autonomy as a new purpose filled them:

to serve sung jinwoo alone.

"no, my king. we shall serve you and your queen diligently. we are deeply sorry for our actions. please, forgive us."

with those last words, all three of jinwoo's newly made soldiers disappear within your shadow, making seo-jun shiver in response. he continues to remain on his knees, not daring to look up even when jinwoo passes him.

that man was no longer human, seo jun thought to himself as he kept his nose pressed against the ground.

for he knew that sung jinwoo was nothing short of a god now.

you let out a soft moan the moment you woke up, feeling like you had just fallen asleep.

your eyes were blurry when you look up to see jinwoo carrying you in his arms.

"hm? jinwoo...? what happened?"

he lets out a hum before looking down at you, lifting you up as he pressed a chaste kiss against your lips.

"hm, nothing much, you just got tired and fell asleep in a café."

you frown and tilt your head at him. "did i really? the last thing i remember was shopping for groceries-"

jinwoo immediately kisses you deeply just then, making you lose your train of thought as you moaned against his lips, kissing him back. almost instinctively, you delve your fingers into his soft, ebony locks of hair, basking in the sweetness of his kiss, not minding that he was purposely distracting you.

when the need for air proves to be too much, jinwoo pulls away from the kiss with a sigh, placing his lips against your forehead as he reassures you, "don't worry about it... now that you're awake, how about we go out to eat?"

"really?! we can go to..." you tell him the name of your favorite restaurant, earning a nod from him.

"yes, absolutely."

as jinwoo basks in your giggles while carrying you, you remain blissfully unaware of the three new shadow soldiers' eyes blinking up at you, now fiercely loyal to you-

you truly hadn't the slightest clue just how far the shadow monarch would go to keep you safe.

Laios in my mind would be an obsessive yandere (for monster!reader) mainly which would, ironically enough, make it harder to notice even when he is publicly weird, like asking you to spit to observe it? Typical laios behavior, wants to taste your blood or scabs when you hurt yourself in the dungeons? Weird but on brand, he is constantly around you scribbling in his notebook? You are one of the first sentient monsters he can talk with

I also love the idea of a monster that thinks this is just silly cute and normal behavior for nonmonsters. Like his party must look so confused or weirded out because this is normal human behavior, but not normal in dwarf/elven/halfling culture. But Laios is so funny!

Like I feel like your average sentient monster would have no grasp on moral or ethical behavior, so the idea of something being wrong or creepy wouldn't pop into their head. Sirens sing to drown their victims and eat them, so the idea of murder being wrong doesn't register to them if you called the way they hunted "murder". Similarly I don't think a monster Darling would view Laios as being creepy or obsessive, he's just doing a silly human thing. I mean it makes sense to learn about your prey and predators, so he's being very smart (for a human) in wanting to learn about them.

Or fuck, imagine Monster Darling assuming every non-monster is like Laios because he met them and then brought them back to the party. So to say "hello", Darling offers them their hair, scales, nails, spit, etc. Laios was so happy to receive them, so why are his companions so confused or disgusted???

Sun and Cat definitely got it the worst when it comes to the city toon’s personality core programming ☠️ Moon has his beast tamed, since he’s getting money, he’s making hella bank, Comet isn’t isolated anymore, and he’s getting to serve those that please him. (They’re not perfect though, Moon struggles with feeling empathy and Comet struggles with social anxiety)

On the other hand, Sun’s fury mixed in with the whole hitman job led him to crave endless violence, and Cat’s leadership (and being a control freak) makes him never satisfied with what power he has.

The tragedy of their existence is that they were bound to be flawed. The manufacturer’s failure at attempting to program cartoon personalities is one of the reasons why they were even thrown out in the first place. The city toons can upgrade vessels, replace limbs, add enhancements, but can’t their core programming whatsoever.
