thank you SO MUCH for this ask you have no idea-

this is one of the best collaborations ive ever heard.

a lot of it is because they both have very distinctive styles, but they know how to work together. each artist not only has their place in the song, moments where it really highlights their signature artistry, but they also have a super strong blending of styles in other parts.

im going to try to explain why i picked this song in a little more detail under the cut (im not an expert by any means, this is just my attempt to verbalize what makes this collaboration special to me)

Nine Inch Nails is a pillar of the industrial and alt rock scene(s), as we know, and it gained a lot of its notoriety in the nineties with songs like Closer and Mr Self Destruct.

A lot of their music's grittier feel, from the quality of Reznor's voice to how the instruments sound, comes from noise distortion (essentially the altering of the original audio). That, and they often layer it with other electronic and industrial noises to accompany the vocals (you'll notice this almost right away).

Trent Reznor is known as the man who made industrial rock as a genre popular, and is recognized as something of a magician by blending electronic, alt, acoustic and classic rock sounds into cohesive music. It takes that kind of harsh noise you get from industrial and marries it with those other genres.

Another reoccurring element I've noticed in a lot of NIN music is a fairly stagnant baseline, one or 2 deep notes kind of suspended in the background, while vocals or other noise plays on top of it (you'll notice this especially in the first chorus).

To return to the topic of vocals, the droning melody of the lyrics is very reminiscent of Add Violence, with slower tracks like The Lovers that contrasted with a lot of their quicker-paced, more aggressive, earlier albums, and their music in general (in my opinion, it just really stands out as an album).

HEALTH made their debut in the noise rock scene in 2005, so while perhaps less iconic as NIN (because that's a high bar for any industrial band post-90s...), they've still anchored themselves as one of the more popular bands of that sub-genre in the 2000s.

Their earlier releases, like the song Triceratops, features a lot of seemingly discordant, fast sounds that create a kind of angry and anxious environment with minimal (or no) lyrics.

In more recent years, they've experimented more with electronic rock and incorporating electronic elements into their usual sound (such as digital beats and more noticeable audio distortion, as well as the incorporation of synth).

For the most part, in their albums from 2007-2009, the vocals are largely overwhelmed by the sound and instruments, and are there namely for atmosphere. What makes the vocals unique is their contrast with this more jarring musicality, they are slow and unusually metered, as well as much more harmonic than the rest of the pieces (which reminds me a lot of newer Radiohead like Supercollider/The Butcher).

What I've found defines HEALTH from a lot of other noise/indusrial/experimental rock groups are those ethereal, almost haunting vocals. They're almost intimidating, as due to their calm tempo and overall consistence of tone, they're really juxtaposed with the strong beat and (at times) aggressive instrumentation. Listen to LOSS DELUXE to feel a bit of that effect.

What I feel makes this collaboration so strong is just how well they've utilized their respective styles to highlight what the other brings. The song's intro is profoundly NIN (so much so that I didn't even realize this was a collab until the chorus). HEALTH slowly bleeds into their sound, and from 1:46-2:11, its a perfect blend, both their styles harmonize during this section.

From 2:13-2:38, we hear HEALTH's sound entirely, melodic and almost tender, which contrasts with the previous section's more rough energy brought by the other band. NIN bleeds back into the song around 2:39, bring back that harsh bass line and Reznor's droning vocals. The song's aggressive feel progresses from here, with the augmented intensity of the instruments and Reznor's vocals turning into more of a scream until both bands are infused into one another's styles once more.

As the song ends, it returns to HEALTH's brand, but not without a brief moment of Reznor's vocals towards the very end, no longer distinctive, but almost agglomerated into the other band's energy.

To summarize, what's so spectacular about this collaboration is their capacity for blending and for leaving space for each band's originality.

If you've never heard HEALTH or Nine Inch Nails, this would be a perfect song to introduce you to both.

he doesn't like how rude he is. like he has kinda sorta no filter when he talks so whatever pops into his head he'll say. he doesn't like how snarky and rude he can be, even though it's a result of trauma and is somewhat justified and doesn't usually result in anything. he's like. the people he's talking to are all very nice!! and they mean well!! he's not trying to be rude but he really just cannot help it!!!

he doesn't like that he gets in the way all the time (he doesn't, he just thinks he does)

he hates that he isn't helpful (even though he's incredibly helpful)

he hates that he isn't good at anything (he's good at lots of things)

he likes that he's. hrm. that he breathes? i guess? he's here. he's alive. he likes being alive. he likes rain. he likes his scales. he likes his not-a-brother. he likes it when the crew smiles at him, when they include him in things. he likes being the little brother.

Howdy, big fan. I literally open my phone every morning and check your blog like it's the news. Anyhoo - on your response to someone's asks bout Bucky being insecure/jealous, you mentioned "what do we think Buck's insecurities are in their relationship? My first thought is him feeling unsure if he can satisfy Bucky's sexual needs. Another could be him thinking he’s boring." This might sound a bit weird but one of the reasons I love Buck so much is because I actually see parts of myself in him. He's so quiet and contemplative and intentional with his words, and the true sign of how comfortably him and Bucky fit together is how much we see Buck be silent next to John. There's such a beautiful companionship in their silences. They feel warm and private and calm. But I do think Buck sometimes has a deep down fear that John would find him boring - perhaps it was earlier when they first met, and the assurance has sunk in over time that actually Bucky loves him exactly how he is. Buck adores Bucky's antics, but Buck doesn't have to be singing badly at the microphone to get John's attention. He doesn't have to try to be louder or expressive. It's one of the reasons I adore Austin's acting of Buck too: it's all in the eyes, it's so subtle, and he wasn't very overtly expressive yet I could still read such depth and vastness of emotion that's going on inside. I like to think Bucky sees and reads him so clearly from the start, and that's why they fit together. Because Buck also sees past the bravado to the John inside, despite his efforts to deflect and avoid and distract when he's in pain and hurting (getting Curt to punch him to feel something, or drinking his sorrows, etc). It's why the scene in the train stopping at Nuremberg for me is so special: in that moment, which to me really is the climax of their friendship, it's the "ok well this might be our deaths moment so let's reflect on what we have", there's a beautiful role reversal. Buck is the talkative one, and Bucky is silent. And there's nothing more to be said, but they both know exactly what the other means. Anyways sorry for my rambling 😂

Anon, this is so well-said that I don’t know what to add ❤️ This is really beautiful and I agree. I love this deep understanding between them, how they can look beyond the surface and truly see each other. The train scene is so special and meaningful. I love Austin's acting too. Not every character needs to wail or wax poetic for the viewer to understand their feelings. I'm glad they went this route with him.

You mentioned you don't read Tomarry in another post. Because I'm super curious (but no pressure or judgment over here), may I ask why not? Why do you read Harrymort only? Why makes you prefer Harrymort so much that you'd ignore Tomarry altogether?

Also, what makes a fic Tomarry vs Harrymort for you? Because I can think of a lot of fics that I consider Harrymort where they switch the name from Voldemort to Tom and even switch his appearance sometimes. (Like anything Maeglin_Yedi writes or Of Your Making by purplewitch156)

I personally love both with all their various tropes, I read both, and I write both. However, in my case, my energy and focus is devoted to my long Tomarry time travel fic rather than my much shorter Harrymort arranged marriage fic.

This is all just genuine curiosity from me with no judgment attached. I wonder what keeps you away from Tomarry, yet what draws you to Harrymort. I find it fascinating. So curious! hiiiii ahh thank you for this ask!! it's so nice that you're actually curious about this. ❤ this may be a bit rambly, so bear with me, yeah?

one of the reasons why i don't read tomarry is because personally, i think that they are just not compatible. no matter what. tom riddle is an ambitious young man with a horrifically cruel streak. he is not afraid to take advantage and manipulate the people around him. he treasures loyalty above almost anything else, and likes when those around him fear him. harry has.. none of those.

i know that the point of enemies to lovers is to somehow make this compatible and to somehow make them fall in love with each other, but i can't see tom being attracted to... any of harry's character enough to get together with him. why would he do that when there are people willing to listen to him already? it's illogical in my opinion. and i know the whole dynamic is 'oh, harry's defiant towards me, what a brave, intriguing guy, i need to see what he's up to.' but the truth of the matter is, i think tom would just plainly dislike that. i know people think tom would like a challenge, and i agree, he does, but i just don't think that would expand towards trying to win people's feelings. he wouldn't care.

the context of tomarry is usually always time travelling and i stand by the fact that i think tom wouldn't think too much of harry. probably because if harry tried anything, tom would easily get harry expelled/killed. he would win easily. back in the 1940's harry wouldn't have enough plot armour to survive through everything. if tom can frame hagrid, he can frame harry, too, and dumbledore might be the only who cares enough to try and override an expulsion but obviously, dippet wouldn't have it. and then if harry's expelled, (which he most likely will be) tom wouldn't spare him a second thought. and i know that in canon, tom does, in fact, spare harry a second thought, but i think that's because he's already voldemort and he's paranoid. if he's young, and he comes across the prophecy, he would just kill harry, it's really not that deep, i promise you. if tom spared a second thought to plan a murder, 100% he would succeed and dumbledore can't say anything because he stayed silent when myrtle died too. it's not drarry where they're trying to hurt each other. this is tomarry where tom will kill harry if need be, and succeed because suddenly harry has no plot armour. it's not the same.

tom riddle isn't as incompetant as voldemort.

ALSO, just wanted to add that in COS, that is not the real tom riddle. that is a corrupted horcrux. obviously, it's going to sound deranged and obsessive after having been stuck in a diary for 50 years. i don't like it when tom is portrayed overly obsessive because people mistake him for the diary horcrux. i do think he was obsessive to a degree, but only towards something that benefits him, not people.

i just don't think harry is special enough to stand out to tom riddle. harry's duelling skills are mediocre, his studies are mediocre and his looks are average. i know in many tomarry fics, harry tries to get tom's attention and succeeds, but i don't think that's realistic because many other people are also always trying to get tom's attention 😭.

and i know many tomarry fics use the fact that harry seems to be the only one who dislikes tom and because of that, he takes notice of harry, but i strongly disagree with that. tom is assumed to be muggleborn/half-blood. back in 1940's, blood supremacy ran rampant. of course there will be purebloods who will never like tom! (prpbably walburga and orion) and tom knows this. he's not going to pay attention to every single person who dislikes him, he's not abraxas malfoy.

the only way i can see harry getting tom's attention is through speaking pareseltongue. and then, after tom hears him speak parseltongue, he spirals. he desperately searches through every single geneology book and when he realises that harry isn't related to him, tom would kill him, because he's supposed to be the heir of slytherin, no one else, and now he is paranoid, because if not his relative, then who is harry? 🙁 so harry is fed to the basilisk. no fawkes and sword of gryffindor to save him now, since he's in slytherin, right?

i genuinely don't think tom would be interested in harry romantically. not when he already has a simpering crowd which worships him. as much as you want to say tom would think them beneath him, that is literally not true, he valued the lestranges for their loyalty. he gifted his notebook to the malfoys for safekeeping. he trusted bella enough to place a piece of his soul in her vault. he obviously appreciated them. what he doesn't appreciate, is being disrespected by someone he sees as wayyyy below his league.

but this is not to say that i have never given a tomarry fic a chance. i have read about 6 to 7 long fics and i figured that i did not like the dynamic at all. obviously the authors can write whatever makes them happy, this is not a them problem at all, this is a me problem. so i just stopped reading tomarry all together.

also, i feel like people characterize tom riddle softer than he actually is, and this makes tom and harry's dynamic more... levelled and i don't like that. even if tom riddle hasn't turned in voldemort yet, i need them to have some kind of imbalance with the scales tipped on tom's side. overall, the usual tomarry is kind of a nothingburger ship to me and it just ends up being murderous drarry.

the point of the hp series is that voldemort is the main, whimsical, mysterious main villian and i don't like that tomarry obliterates this dynamic.

also, i'm not a huge fan of timetravel because the ages mashing up is something i dislike. like, if harry travels back in time, then usually only ron and hermione come with him. it's fun, but i like it when everything is in its canonical place, you know?

you probably know my stance on same age aus at this point 😆.

now, moving onto why i like harrymort muchh more. as you could probably already tell, i love the doomed, dead-dovey aspect of this ship. the psychological horror aspect is really good, too. i adore the age difference and the grave power imbalance. i love that for this ship to happen, harry's morals have to be completely obliterated. i loooove post-war era, i love the potential for forced proximity. everything is just soooo good. the prophecy? epic. the power imbalance? count me in. with harrymort, there is usually a rigid structure i like, like there is no way harry can overpower voldemort in any way whatsoever. (personally, i don't think harry can overpower even tom riddle.) (i know most people don't like this, so now i avoid harrymort fics as well 😭) but yeah.

i really really dislike it when harry calls voldemort 'tom.' if voldemort hates it when even mighty dumbledore who knows almost everything about him calls him tom, how can he like it when someone who 'killed' him, and someone who is practically a stranger calls him that? no way. just.. no. if harry wants to get together with him, he better respect that.

as for voldemort's appearance, i like it when he looks like an older tom riddle. (snake-face is a joke to me 😭😭) it's more poignant when voldemort looks like tom riddle, there are more themes to explore through that, instead of evil = ugly. good = handsome. snake-faced voldemort is horrendously shallow to me.

oh, and i love love love the trope where after the war, harry becomes terribly depressed and he dreams about tom/voldemort, like, ohhh i love that trope so much. there are just so many interesting things to explore in harrymort that tomarry just doesn't have room for. in other words, tomarry is lowkey tame.

what makes a fic tomarry is when voldemort is younger, he's still inexperienced. (borgin's and burkes era, hogwarts era, wool's era) and harrymort is during the first war/second war/time during his travels era.

i hope my answer makes sense, i know you're writing a tomarry timetravel fic and i hope that i have not offended you 😭😭 i'm sure whatever you churn out will be absolutely amazing. people can and are allowed to have different interpretation of tomarry from me, and i completely respect that. people can and should write whatever they enjoy :)) i hope you enjoy writing your fic, i really admire how dedicated you are to writing!!

What do I think? It's OBVIOUS-- the woman is either trolling or is mentally ill. Of course, Extreme Shippers are going to run with it and make something out of nothing. But, I'm surprised anyone in the SANE part of the fandom gave it a second thought. I certainly didn't. What is there to think about? REALITY CHECK: Sam Heughan is NOT married to anyone, including Caitriona Balfe. And he has no children. Caitriona Balfe is married to Tony McGill and they have one son. So, anyone, fan or not, saying otherwise is either an Extreme Shipper, a troll, or mentally ill...sometimes all three. IOW nothing to see here.

Hi Chaos! I love the idea of J being bad at math 😆 Me personally I think he’d be good with numbers and stuff (even though he has to double check himself with basic addition lol, there’s too much going on in his brain for him to focus). But I do think he’d struggle to read a little bit. He’s not illiterate obviously, but sometimes the words don’t come to him immediately. Like he’d have to sound it out a few times, especially complicated words. It’s really noticeable when he tries to read out loud. He doesn’t read fluently and he pauses a lot. I’m imagining y/n asking him to read her a bedtime story and he gets all embarrassed because he can’t read that well. (Kinda like in Beauty and the Beast 😭)

Joker can read, duh, but like me, our diction is trash. It’s because our brain is reading the text faster than our vocal cords can produce. That’s the problem.

Enter Y/n, with copious amounts of patience. You’re a walking thesaurus for J!

You read to Joker every night and teach him how to adopt a manageable reading flow so he can follow along verbally. And you help him how to say different words correctly.

You help him practice reading aloud (because you secretly love listening to his voice) and you reward him with kisses when he reads a chapter without stuttering.

He’s doing better with his pronunciation and pacing yet he prefers when you read to him.

Anna Milton

I'm watching the Anna episode, and I've got so many thoughts for this one. My first watch through, I struggled to like Anna after she remembered she was an angel. In part because she becomes a lot more stoic - she became who she used to be, and the human version of her seemed to just be...gone. I think Anna would have been way more interesting as a mix of human with a lifetime of angelic memory. And she gets a little more like that while she's talking to Dean on that car trunk in the Yard. But there's still too little of that human she used to be left in her personality for me. It made that whole sex scene between her and Dean feel...empty? Anna had so little personality once she became an angel, and approached Dean with the same lack of personality, so it didn't feel...erm...passionate. Let's call it that. As someone who identifies as ACE and also thinks there is way too much sex-for-sex's-sake in our media/entertainment, it bothered me on my first watch through. It bothered me less with time, but it always seemed out of place. (OMG, also, can we PLEASE talk about how she puts her hand over Cas's handprint? Like?!!? SHE WOULD KNOW WHAT THAT WAS. That made the whole thing seem very...hmm...like a pointed message to her former suboridnate 🤣) ((As does the kiss she gives Dean, which the show very purposefully cut to Cas's reaction for. Like. You don't cut to another guy's face mid-kiss for no reason.)) (((Personally, I think it was a way to start showing Castiel's...weakness for humanity. Not necessarily romantically, but for sure in curiosity. It fits too when later everyone shuts their eyes when Anna gets her grace back expect Cas. He's staring at her with such open curiosity and awe. I'm pretty sure it took way fewer episodes for me to fall in love with Cas, but this one cemented it))) Anyhoo, back to Anna! I struggled with her more and more every episode she was in because she just went more and more stoic-angel. And what a bummer! She had soooo much potential to be a cool, involved character. I never understood why they didn't use her more. Second thought - Part of me wants to have gone further into why Anna chose to fell, especially with the possible rising tension in the upper ranks of Heaven with the Apocalypse coming. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to lay groundwork for Heaven being the bad guy. Anna either found out more than she wanted to know or just got a sense Heaven wasn't what it was supposed to be. They show could have sprinkled a bit of that in and made Anna more of a key player in being on the humans' side when the time came. Third part! Oh My God. Why was Dean sooo damn interested in her after he found out she was an angel. He was a bit flirty when she was human, but guys, it like...tripples once she reveals she's an angel. He does the whole half-smirk, green-doe-eyed smile around her allllll the time. Guys. Dean is so hot for angels, and the second one came along with them female looks, he was ON THAT 👀 Aaaaaangel kiiiiiiiiiiink. That's our boy!

Lastly, can we talk about Alistair knowing how to exorcise Cas? I don't fully know why that hit me in the good-storytelling bits, but oh boy did it. And I love that Dean saves him from it. You could argue it's kinda just nature for Dean in a fight, but that was Alistair he was taking on. The whole point of that battle was to let the angels and demons fight each other (and get out of the way), and he couldn't let Alistair "kill" Cas. I love how early on that friendship was being written. They could have had it be Sam or Dean or Anna who got Alistair off Cas, but nope! They picked Dean 😁 Anyhoo, that's my ramble for tonight! I'm supposed to be writing (I haven't written anything in two weeks 😭) but since I'm stuck on the damn Morton House (seriously - have I ever told you guys I don't like writing Sam when he's away from Dean? THEY are supposed to be the co-dependent ones, dammit 🙄) I thought hey, I'll post here! At least I'm keeping those writing/Supernatural/fangirl vibes flowing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ So! Help me get some planning gears in motion. What do you all want to see out of Anna in TRSF? I have one idea at the moment, but I don't know if I'll go that way, as it conveniently takes Anna out of the story. And I juuust ranted about how much I did not like the show for doing that🤦‍♀️ She'd get to live happily as a human at least! But the more I think about it, the more I know she has potential as a character. I also know that the Muse and I have a habit of shying away from the women on the show Dean gets busy with. A small part of me thinks "NO, he's for Cas, back off ladies!", but that's me fangirling and I know that. A bigger part of me doesn't want to write him getting intimate with other characters (although for some reason, Cassie and Lisa don't trigger this at all - just Bela and Anna). The largest part yet is actually just angry and holding a grudge against the show writers for the amount of queer-baiting we got followed by under-developed and sometimes forced-on-us relationships, particularly with Dean.

Hmm, that's probably why Cassie and Lisa don't trigger this issue. Those relationships well developed and had purpose/fullfillment in them. Plus, the characters were well written and had depth! But Anna's relationship with Dean felt especially forced. And so my default planning definitely went towards avoiding her. Heeey, look at me writing out my thought process until I reached an understanding! Now I know why I want to avoid Anna, which means it's time to get the Muse working on the exact opposite 🤣 And that ramble got away from me. Go back to telling me what you all want to see from an Anna story arc in TRSF! Please and Thank you in Advance for all ideas and inspiration! 😁
