Y’know, I’ve never once been harassed for wearing a mask in public. And I don’t live in some liberal utopia where most people are still masking - I live in a purple-leaning-red suburb in a red-leaning state where I’m often the only person wearing a mask in whatever building I’m in. But nobody even looks at me funny. I certainly believe people who have been harassed, but I wonder how widespread it actually is. So here is a poll:

A judge has found Calgary pastor Artur Pawlowski guilty of mischief for his role in protests against COVID-19 public health measures.

The protests at Coutts, Alta., blocked the province's main border crossing into the United States for more than two weeks in early 2022.

"I am satisfied Mr. Pawlowski intended to incite the audience to continue the blockade intended to incite protesters to commit mischief," Justice Gordon Krinke said as he delivered his verdict Tuesday.

Tuesday a woman came into the store and was upset that customers and employees were wearing masks. While stocking cat cans I overheard her say, "What is with the masks? I've got to stop shopping here."

Unfortunately, I happened to be at the front when she was ready to check out and she said again, "What's with the mask?"

I said I don't like getting sick, and she said, "Oh my GOD, masks don't WORK, there are studies for DECADES proving they don't work!"

Obviously I had no response, so I asked if she was a member with us and continued to ring her up.

"I can see you breathing, that mask is doing nothing, your mask is even worse than HERS!" and she gestured to my coworker. (My coworker was restocking the Pet Deli, which is full of greasy treats, and she was wearing gloves. "Gloves just spread germs! You're just getting germs everywhere else when you wear gloves!" My coworker said she was wearing gloves because of the greasiness of the treats. "Well, you better not touch anything else!")

I finished ringing up the woman's items, not really responding to her comments, and asked if she wanted her receipt.

"You'll be wearing a mask for the rest of your life, good luck with THAT, honey!"

"The rest of my life will be a lot longer than yours if I wear a mask and you don't," I didn't say, because I have to act professional and respectful even if she doesn't.

I wish I had responded like the Harvard Business School recommends and said, "Are you okay? You seem really upset about something that doesn't affect you."

I don't understand conservatives. I just don't.

I see and hear people coughing like they're dying and I don't say, "Geez, wear a mask!" I don't tell people in MAGA hats that they're stupid.

And I certainly wouldn't rant at a cashier who's just doing their job, even if they're exhibiting some kind of behavior or apparel that makes it clear we don't agree politically.

The people who are against wearing masks knowing that they are sick and say it’s your body your choice how do you feel about people not wearing condoms when they know they have STIs. Like if AIDS was an airborne illness would y’all still wear masks.

Oh boy do I actually have a story for this account that I nearly completely forgot until I thought more about the subject of anti-maskers.

So this was maybe two years ago, during a really bad COVID spike in my city. But it was towards the ‘end’ of the pandemic (well. It hasn’t ended but it was towards when people started calling it the ‘end’) so people were starting to be… worse… about wearing masks. Anyway, I was at the grocery store. It was reaaaally crowded, and despite most people there wearing masks, there were still a good portion not wearing them, so I was a little impatient to leave.

So I’m in the super long line. Luckily the people around me are wearing masks. Except… the person in front of my has their nose out of their mask.

So I’m thinking. Do I say something. Because come on, we’ve been doing this for years, it’s not hard. But also I don’t want to like Get Into a Confrontation. But I look at this person, they have dyed hair and cool earrings and generally look queer. I kinda sigh with relief and think, oh, this person is probably not, like, super conservative, luckily I can probably say something.

So I say, “excuse me?” and they turn around to look at me. “Sorry, would you mind pulling your mask over your nose?”

Now I’m not gonna lie I don’t remember word for word what happened next because I ended up dissociating hardcore. But I do remember that they got, like, mad. Like they started yelling at me and shit. Something along the lines of, “oh yeah? You want me to pull it up? What, are you scared? Are you scared?” Surprised, I made the mistake of. Responding. I said something like, “well, yeah, it’s not that big a deal?” And that SET THEM OFF!! They pulled their mask on and started trying to get super close to me.

Now keep in MIND that I am disabled and while I don’t know for sure if I’m immunocompromised or anything, I do have weird nebulous lung issues, and have had periods where I’ve been sick for like. A year. So I did NOT want to get COVID (for good reason, when I got it a few months ago it left me with long COVID…).

So I have this person trying to get all up in my space and I’m guiltily moving really close to the people in front of me. I try to keep a lot of space between us. But even though I literally do not open my mouth from then on, they keep. Harassing me. Yelling at me, and if I so much as GLANCE in their general direction they start trying to get in my personal space. Like it got so bad that a woman with her son next to me pulled him closer to her because of the ire of this person.

I am autistic and I started to get very overwhelmed. Mostly typical dissociation stuff, but I must have been visibly, like, upset or something because a worker at the grocery store CAME UP AND MOVED ME TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE.

This did NOT make the person happy. And the one time I tried to subtly glance back to see what they were doing as I was checking out, I found them staring daggers at me. Ofc they immediately noticed me even though I tried as hard as possible to be subtle, and they started yelling at me from ACROSS THE STORE.

Anyway so I got out of there ASAP.

Moral of the story is that people are weird and anti-maskers like that are truly the scum of the earth and make life way more difficult and dangerous for every single disabled person out there.

Like I literally was in disbelief the whole time, thinking, I wouldn’t even believe this if I read it online. I can’t believe things like this actually happen. So yeah anyone who doesn’t believe this. I totally understand lmao. But also be careful out there… pls learn from my mistakes 🙇

bc ive had at least two instances of people nearly having aneurysms over me just. existing while wearing a mask within the past couple of months, and ive no idea what drives these people to act so deranged over a fucking mask lol

you know I’m just gonna come out and say it, i don’t feel safe in this world due to the overwhelming pandemic denial. it used to be just the conservatives and republicans who were anti mask anti social distancing but when it quickly depoliticized (by that i mean democratic representatives and the biden administration declaring an end to the pandemic), a LOT of people showed their true colors. now, basically anyone who doesn’t give a damn about disability or about disabled people are bare faced and while i’m glad their apathy is exposed, i am NOT glad their faces, ALL THOSE BASICALLY EVERYONE MAJORITY PEOPLE’s faces are exposed. you can’t be safe anymore. my idea of who my close friends are have significantly reduced because i know all those without masks wouldn’t really be there for me if i needed them (as a disabled person myself).

One of Canada’s top “anti-mask” organizers was quietly paid thousands of dollars by the Conservative leadership campaign of Roman Baber to act as a recruiter and sell party memberships.

Baber, a former Ontario Progressive Conservative MPP who placed fourth in the leadership race that saw Pierre Poilievre crowned leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, is currently seeking the party’s nomination in the federal riding of York-Centre.

According to leadership campaign expenses filed with Elections Canada, Baber’s campaign paid $5,000 to Vladislav Sobolev for expenses coded as “salaries, wages and consulting fees.”

Sobolev is the founder of the anti-mask group “Hugs Over Masks” and describes himself as the “one of the original Freedom Warriors from April 2020.” Sobolev was often found at the centre of controversy during the pandemic, repeatedly cited in news stories as a key anti-mask influencer and spreader of COVID-19 misinformation.

Bathusa Baskararajah, spokesperson for Baber’s Conservative nomination campaign, confirmed to PressProgress that Baber’s leadership campaign hired Sobolev, describing the anti-mask activist as a “memberships seller.” [...]
