my favorite thing about the atla characters in tlok is toph saying "you don't see katara getting involved in the civil war" because she can't use zuko as an example. he's older than katara & toph and is still fighting like his honor depends on it [see: zuko fighting zaheer & gang at the south(?) pole]

Zuko x reader - forever and always
Tumblr media
Hey there I just read your LOK story about Zuko and I was wondering if you can do another where Zuko dies old age and they reunite in the spirit world like they run to each other fall to the ground and are just happy to be with each other again? Thank you 🫶🫶 - Anon 💜
Sitting on the tree stump, you smiled to yourself as you looked at all of the spirits wondering to and from, doing their own little thing.
“It’s peaceful here, isn’t it?”
You turned to the other spirit and nodded your head.
“It really is Iroh, it really is. What brings you this far out?”
He smiled softly and held his hand out to you.
“You’ve got a visitor.” He smiled.
Titling your head a little, you nodded and let him pull you up and lead you down the path.
You were curious, he didn’t often leave the sanctuary of his own little corner of the spirit world, while you enjoyed wondering about and seeing everything it had to offer.
“Who is it? Is it Korra?” You asked.
“Not quite.”
He stopped at the end of the path, to the entrance to the spirit world, and you stared at it as you watched a figure walk through.
He looked different when he walked through, but you could still easily recognise him, of course you could.
And when he fully walked through, his appearance had changed, but to his younger self. To the version of himself you knew when you were still alive.
Your hands flew to your mouth as you turned to Iroh.
“Go…” he whispered.
Nodding, you spun around and started to run.
He started to run towards you as well, and when you were close enough you jumped into his arms and he spun you around, burying his face into the crook of your neck.
“Zuko…” you whispered.
Zuko set you down and he pulled away, taking your face between his hands as he carefully looked at you.
He looked at you and he slowly sank to his knees, and you dropped down in front of him.
“I can’t believe it’s really you…” he whispered.
You gently touched his cheek, and he smiled, closing his eyes as he leant into your touch.
“Oh Zuko… my sweet Zuko I’ve missed you so much…”
You pressed your forehead to his, and he took your face between his hands again, brushing his nose against yours as he gently kissed you.
And you had happily kissed him back.
For years all you wanted was to hold him, kiss him again.
When you pulled away from the kiss, you smiled softly as you looked at him.
You admired how the light here made his eyes sparkle, the little glow it added to them.
Reaching up, you trailed you finger along the edge of his scar and he closed his eyes.
He had almost forgotten what you had looked like.
Almost.
He pictured you every day, dreamt of you every night.
You were his whole world, and it broke him when he lost you.
But you were so beautiful, just as beautiful as the day you had left him and now he could hold you in his arms forever.
Zuko never had to let you go again, and he didn’t want to.
Now he had the whole eternity to spend with you, just like you both did when you got married. Together forever and always, just like you promised

hey there!
this might be like a weird ask, but i've seen you post a lot about the legend of korra, so.
do you think it's worth watching the show? i've been avoiding it for a while now simply because i'm afraid it's gonna disappoint. i know it is a separate narrative with entirely new characters, but from the few scenes i've seen it just looks sooooo different from the gaang's story that i'm just afraid they've butchered the original universe. plus, my favorite character from atla is aang, and i do not know if any character from korra will have that same kind of charm.
on the other hand, i know it attracts a lot of fans. what do you think?:)
(btw, amazzzzzzing job on both your zukaang fanfic and the artwork for it !!)
Hi anon! :) This isn't a weird ask at all, I'd be happy to help!
So the short answer is: yes, I think it's worth watching! I know exactly how you feel - Aang is also my favorite AtLA character, so I was also very apprehensive when LoK was first announced way back in like 2011. But my apprehension didn't stop me from looking forward to and eventually enjoying it, mainly because AtLA was/still is my strongest and longest running hyperfixation to date, and I (especially at that time) was willing to consume any scrap of media related to it lol. We were very starved for content in the olden days :')
I'll go ahead and give you a spoiler-free breakdown of the four LoK seasons - this might help you decide:
Book 1: Air is definitely is quite a bit different from AtLA (which was done on purpose by the creators to differentiate it so it wouldn't just feel like the exact same show). Book 1 is still my least favorite of the LoK seasons for this reason (as well as for questionable writing decisions), but there are still some great moments. You may notice that Book 1 ends very "neatly" - this is because LoK was originally supposed to be a miniseries before Nickelodeon picked it up for 3 more seasons (which I think was a large part of why the writing suffers a lot in the first half of the show as a whole).
Book 2: Spirits also starts out pretty rough (with more questionable writing decisions), but it picks up about halfway through. Some people say this is their least favorite season, but I've always enjoyed it overall a ton more than Book 1. While some of the additions to the lore of the Avatar and the Spirit World are polarizing amongst the fandom (and there are some things I wish they'd done differently), I still ate that shit up when it first aired lol.
Book 3: Change is where, in my and many others' opinions, the show suddenly rises to the same level of quality as AtLA. There's a lot of traveling, we get to see some familiar faces and several classic AtLA locations from Book 2: Earth, the villains are the best villains in any Avatar media, and the plot and emotional core of the season are just so, so good. I can't say any more because I don't want to spoil even a little bit of it. I personally think LoK is worth watching just for this season alone.
Book 4: Balance is not as good as Book 3, but I enjoyed it a lot more than Book 1 and Book 2. It does a really good job of exploring trauma/PTSD and the relevance of the role of the Avatar in a modernizing world, and is a decent followup to Book 3. What happens at the end of Book 4 is also SO culturally impactful (not sure if you know why, but I won't say anything specific), especially for queer AtLA fans such as myself.
While LoK definitely isn't perfect, I still accept it as canon for the world of Avatar, and it's still a show I've rewatched several times (though I tend to skip a lot of Book 1 and the first half of Book 2 when I do lmao). If you decide to watch it, go in with an open mind knowing that it is not going to be exactly like AtLA. Even in the not-as-good seasons, there's still some gems to behold. And what's also nice about LoK is that each season is about 12ish episodes, so you'll get to the really good stuff (Book 3) pretty quickly if you binge lol.
Feel free to send me another ask if you have any more specific questions about LoK! :)

i was going to leave it at just the shipping discussion at first, but i decided this bothered me too much, and i need to vent it out. i've had this on my mind for quite some time but i don't know many people into atla who are radfem or adjacent, and i absolutely do not trust anyone outside of radfem circles to not have the most status quo, heteronormative, male-centric, "things are exactly as i first imagined" / "i cannot imagine right or wrong or natural outside of the literal text given to me by the original writers" views on this topic (based on my own experiences with trying to talk about atla with others).
the show would have been far better if zuko were a (gnc) girl and azula were a boy. i know you may be resistant to this because i know you had at least some level of a formative crush on azula, but i'm begging you to hear me out on this one.
aside from the fact it would give a hero role to a fully gnc girl (as opposed to partial, like suki or toph), it just makes sense. zuko not being able to get approval from ozai no matter what, while azula is favored at every stop turns into a matter of familial misogyny, rather than "azula is just naturally better at being evil" (which takes a vaguely eugenicist angle when considering the comics, which say that zuko is probably not ozai's kid, but azula is). it doesn't matter that zuko is older, it wouldn't matter if she were more cutthroat, it wouldn't matter if she were better at bending, it wouldn't even matter if she caught the avatar. a patriarchal dictator like ozai would always favor a son over a daughter.
second, it would make all of the fire nation characters' situations more realistic and more poignant, in general. aside from the aforementioned favoritism towards a son over a daughter, it would make azula's characterization as a violent narcissist who believes (s)he deserves ownership and control over the world make more sense, it would change the context of mai and ty lee standing against azula for the sake of zuko (and each other) into a vaguely anti-feminist situation to a wholly feminist one (i don't ship mai and zuko at all, so the context of being a romantic couple here doesn't really matter to me; it could be motivated by romantic love or platonic love and solidarity imo), it would make zuko and katara's relationship and growth stronger (both of them would have a history of facing near-constant misogyny that served as barricades in the way of the direction they want to take in life), and it would almost completely erase the uneasiness of the fact that zuko was entirely redeemed and azula wasn't redeemed at all (even in the comics), because the real life context of violence and perpetuation of harmful cycles committed by women vs men supports that women can very frequently recover and be redeemed, and men recovering and being redeemable is much less common (because they don't want to).
this is just one aspect of the series i could talk on and on about, by the way, but this post is already too long. as a bonus, though: i believe this minor change would give so much more potential for better lesbian ships than whatever was happening in lok (which i hate for a number of reasons; mainly that it completely destroyed previous worldbuilding and i felt that the plot was just outright stupid in comparison to the original series, and the shipping stuff in that show was sooo...ugh. as i said, a completely different topic i could go on and on about).
OKAY WAIT ANON BECAUSE - AUGH YES WAIT!
It is true that I had a crush on Azula, but I'm almost CERTAIN I would've come out much earlier if Zuko had been the female GNC sibling LMAO.
I think the decision to make Azula the evil one and all that was based on making a good, long term female villain. I think the creators were trying to break a few barriers (which, in many respects, they absolutely did!). But what you're saying would have played so much deeper and allowed so much more insight (canon or otherwise) into this world. I imagine having a GNC daughter would also foster some resentment from Ozai compared to Iroh who has shown in canon time and time again that he's not going to get pressed about a bender's sex (I avoided the rhyme on purpose).
I haven't read the comics so correct me. But to me, Ozai always appeared to be a traditionalist where it benefited him. The topic of gender bias in the series isn't nearly as touched on as they could've gone. And in a way, I understand because it is technically a kid's show and as far as I'm aware, they were constantly on thin ice with Nickelodeon. But goddamn would this have made the whole show just that extra layer of *chef's kiss*.
My basis for Zuko and Katara were the usual points made. But what you said just AUGH ANON YES 😭😭 it would've been amazing! 😭
Talk as much as you want! Leave a whole essay for me to read idc when you're this based. 🫶🏾

sometimes I think about how much Toph's daughters must've meant to the rest of gaang when they were born, and then I think about how much more they must've meant to Toph herself And Legend of korra is telling me that Toph Beifong neglected her actual children like sorry but I'm not buying it and they seriously missed out on a great story with a badass single mom raising her two daughters with the best of her ability, and all of them sharing a connection as strong as stone.
Hi Anon, thank you for the ask, and your patience! Better late than never with my responses, amirite? LOL.
And I 100% agree with you. I think the Beifong ladies have a special place in the Gaang's hearts, and Toph will go fighting to the Spirit World and back for her girls.
I find it very difficult to watch the Legend of Korra for this reason lol. I know that part of it was to make Lin's backstory more nuanced and stuff, and while I love Lin's characterization, I hate that it comes at the expense of ruining Toph's.
I've never really accepted this idea that Toph was a bad mother because it was too difficult or outside her comfort zone. I think she'd lean on her friends a lot, especially if she had to do it alone, and even when the Gaang wasn't around to help with a particular situation, she's the type of person to face the issue head on, to tackle the obstacle and find a way for her to make her kids feel better.
Part of the issue is that Lin and Suyin's childhood is talked about in like, three episodes, and it's from the perspective of Lin and Su. There's definitely more to the story, and the fact that we don't have it is frustrating.
Also, I just have always believed that Toph would be a great mother. She'd be terrified at the prospect of taking care of a baby, but she knew that neglecting them or hiding them away from the world was not what she wanted to do. But she'd love her kids to death and would protect them as best she could and give them the life that they deserved. It would be tough for her to balance taking care of the girls and managing a busy work schedule, but she's Toph Beifong! She can do anything she puts her mind to.
And like you said, it would've been such a great story to hear about Toph raising her two girls by herself and them being extremely close through good times and bad. They would love visiting their aunts and uncles and traveling when they can, they'd have late night takeout dinners where they get to eat in bed together, and whenever they had nightmares, they'd all huddle up and "protect" each other from the monsters in the closet.
I get that not every story can be a happy one, but I still believe that Toph and her girls should've. And I will stand proudly on this hill LOL.
Anyway, I won't ramble anymore lol. I certainly have a lot of thoughts about the Beifong family, so if you ever want to chat some more, feel free to stop by! But I'll get off my soapbox for tonight lmao.
Thanks again for the ask, Anon! Always love chatting about the beloved Beifongs, and like I said before, feel free to ask more questions if you'd like! Hope you have a great day!
......
Send me asks about ATLA, LOK, or anything, really! :D

Any thoughts on the upcoming atla movie featuring the gaang in their adult years? I’m clinging to the idea that if I don’t like it, I can pretend it never happened and find solace in fanfiction, just as some people do regarding the comics and even LoK. But it’s not doing much to comfort me. I just wish they’d leave this characters and this universe alone and move on new things. But if you’re optimistic about it, please don’t let my skepticism ruin your excitement. It might be a good movie.
Oh, anon... me, optimistic about canon? There's a handful of franchises where I do trust the canon direction and where I do believe the authors/writers/showrunners/creators have a proper purpose in the content they're making. As active a fic writer as I may be, Avatar, I'm afraid, is not one of them.
This doesn't mean I believe the upcoming movie is guaranteed to suck... but it does mean that I'm hardly the most optimistic person when it comes to any post-ATLA content. To this day, I can't say I've been happy with anything they've created after the first show ended. I have a lot of gripes with ATLA's canon as it is, but as I find it so engaging and I think its potential is immense, I still can cherish the original show while acknowledging quite often that it's not perfect. Meanwhile... I can't really enjoy the comics. I enjoyed LOK Book 1 when I first watched it... the rest of the show soured the entire concept of the sequel series for me later. I haven't touched the novels because I'm afraid I won't like what's in there either, and I feel like me and the fandom will be better off if I don't read them because, if I find stuff there that sits ill with me, I'll probably criticize it for a long time and everyone who loved it will be upset at my criticism, while I'll just be upset at having things to criticize, and everyone will just be miserable...
Anyway. This movie, and Avatar Studios as a whole, have to achieve one thing in order for me to have even a smidge of hope for its future:
I need to know they have purpose and direction.
This is fundamentally what I've found lacking in everything that has followed the completion of ATLA. I really don't know what the purpose and direction of most post-canon content was, it felt like most of it didn't have any (and when they did have purpose, they didn't necessarily fulfill that purpose in a satisfactory way, either). If there's no purpose and direction? Then slice-of-life shenanigans would be perfect! Give me glimpses at how people live their lives after the war ended, simple plotlines that are character-centric and that allow those characters to have agency, to evolve as individuals and to make the most of a world where the war is finally over!
Without purpose and direction, there's no point to attempting to tell epic tales because they'll fall flat, especially when they're following up something that DID have purpose and direction, as in, the entirety of ATLA. Sometimes, stories feel complete because they are. When they're extended further just for the sake of making a bigger profit, the risk of breaking open that sense of completion means that what may have worked at first might stop working in the future. If you add too many pieces of machinery that just weren't part of the original design of a device, the once-smoothly-working device will get cluttered and eventually stop working: that's how it feels for me when I see stuff that gets extended without purpose and direction, be it in this fandom or any others.
I can't have blind hope for these movies. I won't have any real expectations from them until I actually understand what their purpose and direction will be. If that purpose and direction happens to be something like witnessing how our ATLA heroes built Republic City in the era of peace they've brought forward, and how they protect that peace from realistic and reasonable threats against it? (... as in, no spirit shenanigans, no exaggerated benders that retcon things that were established in canon, among other things that appear to be the bread and butter of post-ATLA storytelling) I'll be good with that. But if that purpose and direction is actually "let's make up a sudden, new, BIGGER threat than the Hundred Year War, a threat that was never referenced in LOK and that had no impact on the ATLA characters' story because there's no actual consequences to it in any of our other post-canon content, all be it so we can prioritize big, flashy and epic bending battles over story quality!" then... I don't need that in my life, simple as that.
In short, if I don't sense that there's purpose and direction, I'll just not watch the movies or anything Avatar Studios releases. Again, it will be for the best for the fandom and for myself if that's the case... because I think we all have more fun when I'm having fun too rather than just raging about canon's choices :'D feels like that should be the point of fandom after all...
So, I'm basically on the same boat as you. I don't really think they HAVE to stop producing content for the franchise, but I don't think I can genuinely enjoy what they do unless they actually commit to telling stories worth telling again. Evidently, I have no power over whatever they may do, neither do you, so they'll just do whatever they feel like doing... but if canon goes nowhere with these movies, I'll just wish them well and stick to what I love. It's what I'm participating in fandom for, to begin with.

Hi Anon! Thank you for your request! I hope you like your matchups!
In Stranger Things, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Your artistic whimsical nature matches Jonathan's creative side well!
Photography dates are a must! You'll both take your cameras (or photography device of choice) and set out on a walk around the town.
When you get back, you'll either look over the photos or get to work on a related project. There's not usually much talking during this part of the date but the company more than makes up for it.
Jonathan would probably be a bit concerned about your sense of humour but as an artist himself, he can certainly appreciate it. You don't get into the arts without a bit of a morbid sense of humour.
Thinks your cartoon is the most amazing thing he's ever seen. He can't even begin to imagine how much work has already gone into it and how dedicated you are to the project. If there's anything he can do to help you with it, just ask; he's ready and willing to help in any way he can.
Jonathan also loves watching you dance. He might join in if he knows the song but for the most part, he just likes watching you. He will take pictures (assuming you're okay with that) and make a portfolio dedicated to your performances.
In Chronicles of Narnia, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Lucy loves that she has someone else in her life who enjoys the more fantastical and whimsical side of things!
Long walks through Narnia exploring every path that looks interesting. When you return to Cair Paravel, there'll be questions regarding where you both were for the last few hours but you both enjoy those walks too much to give them up.
Lucy doesn't really get your sense of humour, but she's used to it since Edmund has the same style. You and Edmund are unstoppable when you get joking together.
Loves reading fantasy books with you. She'd especially like it if you take turns reading a chapter out loud while the other works on a creative project.
I see Lucy as someone who enjoys embroidery as well so she'd love making things for you. Whether it's as simple as a flower on a handkerchief or as complex as a portrait, she likes giving you projects that have her love and affection quite literally woven into them.
Listening to music is a must. Whether you're playing or someone else is, Lucy loves spending time with you while music's playing. If you're not the one playing, she'd pull you up to dance with you.
In Legend of Korra, I match you with...
Tumblr media
Opal comes from a fairly creative family so she's used to being around people who see the potential art in everything. Her brother also has a fairly dark sense of humour so she'd used to that as well.
Opal's a very free person so life will never feel stagnant with her around. Not to mention, she's friends with the Avatar, so there's always something happening.
Loves listening to you play music. I see her as someone who knows how to play an instrument or two so if you're up for playing with someone else, she'd love to join in.
Admires your optimism. It's a trait that she tries her best to uphold as well. Having a positive attitude, even when things aren't going well, is sometimes the best thing.
Opal would love reading your poetry! She thinks you're very good at it and always has good feedback to give you. If you write a poem about her, she would keep it somewhere she can read it everyday.

To the anon complaining about Bryke milking the franchise, you do realize that there still a lot of stories to tell in that world right?
Everyone that loves ATLA and LOK have been wanting more from this franchise. For so many years we’ve wanted to see the gaang as young adults and we’re finally getting it with a theatrical movie.
We could be getting a Avatar Kyoshi series too along with stories centered around other Avatars. Don’t act like there isn’t any potential for great stories to come out of Avatar studios.

I would respect the decision to give Bumi bending if the show runners didn’t undercut a bunch of major things their characters do. A few examples being Korra fighting so hard to access her past lives only for them to be ripped out of her forever (how to progress the ATLA universe after that??? The next guy only had Korra??). Lin sacrificing everything only for the air fam to get captured Off Camera. Toph being a cop and a dirty one at that. I don’t know who had creative reins on the show but they didn’t seem like they were putting much thought into things. Just throwing ideas at a dart board sometimes.
So that to me feels like they did it just to do it. Not to progress his character or the storyline. They threw spaghetti and we got Air Bending Bumi.
I will be honest anon I kind of don't care about other characters at all. Like I'm sorry that happened to them. Or congratulations I guess.
Everything has to be about Bumi or I will literally die.
Fun fact the only character I actively draw outside of otp is Mako..... The others are drawn on requests for friends or for gifts. So yeah.
LoK is a mess of a show but I got Bumi out of it so I'm glad for that.
Also about the last part, that's how I approach the Bumi to not go insane at how whitewashed his character is. Like. The spirits and the world threw spaghetti and him and now we get airbending Bumi, and he has to cope with it.
I just enjoy him in situations.

everything changed when the air nomads attacked
@the-badger-mole: hello from the air nomad attack au anon (alliteration is always appealing)! This is as much of the idea as i have right now, and is more than i ever intended of writing it. Anyone seeing this is welcome to make use of this idea however they can, because i'm certainly not likely to.
100 years ago, the Air Nomad leadership had been feeling troubled for quite some time with the state of the world. So much violence, so little meditation, so much focus on material possessions, so little connection with the spiritual. They saw themselves as the cure. When Roku died and the next Avatar was born into their number, they saw it as their opportunity to reshape the world into a “better” place. Sozin did something they disapproved of -- something perhaps morally questionable, but way less objectively bad than, say, colonizing the Earth Kingdom or attempting genocide -- and they executed him, and placed a puppet on the throne. They told their people the leaders of the world were like wayward children, leading the world into an era of war and cruelty, and they, the enlightened Air Nomads, needed to take them in hand and lead them to a brighter, fairer future.
100 years later:
* Aang rules the Air Nomads as a “benevolent” father figure. He’s effectively an absolute dictator, with everyone following his commands.
* The Air Nomads are smothering the entire world, metaphorically speaking. Most leaders are puppets, enforcing Air Nomad beliefs on their populations because they know they'll be imprisoned or worse if the Air Nomads decide they're "leading people astray". Bending is strictly controlled: only Air Nomads can teach it, regardless of the type, and their methods of teaching are based on airbending, ignoring the strengths and styles of each element. People caught bending in an "unauthorized" fashion can be imprisoned or have their bending taken away.
* The NWT is the most compliant: the Air Nomads manipulated their strict traditions and strong sense of community to browbeat them into following along. The SWT is dissolved, with various (very small) communities hiding out in the Earth Kingdom or some parts of the South Pole. When they’re found out, it tends to be bad, as the Air Nomads considers their attachment to their families, use of furs, and dependence on hunting to require extra special conditioning to “correct”.
* The Earth Kingdom is very divided. No one is interested in listening to what the Air Nomads have to say, so when a monarch or leader is replaced with a puppet or intimidated into backing the Air Nomads, suddenly a bunch of their subjects leave, swearing allegiance to other leaders and moving to other areas.
* The Fire Nation is suppressed the hardest, both in an effort to combat fire's determination to act, and because the Air Nomads believe the Fire Nation wanted to wipe them out one hundred years ago. Firebending is very heavily restricted, if not outright illegal. People in the Fire Nation fall mainly into two categories: those smothered by the Air Nomads, who follow along and don't cause trouble (the majority); and those for whom the Air Nomads only fuel the fire, and have overbalanced into fighting for fighting's sake (led by Ozai supported by Zhao and Azula).
* Over the past few decades there have been fewer and fewer airbenders born, as a result of the imbalance in the world. Aang uses energybending to give airbending to those he trusts, and though he publicly assures everyone that the diminishing number of born airbenders is a good or at least neutral or temporary thing, behind the scenes he’s trying desperately to change it.
* The plot centers around two things: one, some kind of reconnection with the central spirits behind earth, fire, and waterbending, and two, ending the Avatar cycle permanently.
* Aang's working toward something, i'm just not sure what. Possibly some version of the Harmonic Convergence whatever from LoK, where he'll be able to grant airbending to the ones he likes and take bending away from those he doesn't. Or maybe he's trying to make himself immortal, somehow.
* The main characters are Toph, Sokka, Katara, Zuko, and Tenzin -- Tenzin (alternatively named Gyatso) in this case being Aang's great-grandson. Suki would be there too, i just have no idea where to put her.
* The story starts at Tenzin's airbending mastery ceremony. It's a big celebration: not only is he the Avatar's great-grandson, but he's the youngest master in a long time (not sure how old he is exactly, probably not twelve but still just a teen), which encourages the Air Nomads worried about the dwindling number of airbenders.
* Around that same time, bad weather forces Toph and her mother to stay at the temple, and a series of events leads to Toph saving Tenzin's life with earthbending. But her earthbending is the Bad kind, so Aang determines she needs to have her bending taken away. Toph escapes before this can happen -- possibly with the help of Tenzin, though he's quickly persuaded he made the wrong choice when the Nomads discover what he did.
* Tenzin is the antagonist-turned-hero of this story, though in a different kind of storyline than Zuko's. A natural free spirit, Tenzin recognizes instinctively that the Air Nomads are in the wrong, especially as he's confronted more and more with evidence of their and Aang's wrongdoings, but he's also afraid of confrontation and overawed by his great-grandfather. His story arc has to do with confronting the unhealthy Air Nomad philosophy, internally as well as externally, replacing it with a healthier understanding of freedom and humility, and learning to stop running away and stand up for what matters.
* Not precisely sure what Sokka and Katara's family situation would be like in this AU, but they're more or less on their own when the story starts. They're traveling through the Earth Kingdom, insisting they're just wanderers or refugees or traveling merchants, and definitely don't have anything to do with the mysterious healings that seem to follow them. Toph runs into them, figures out what's going on, and they team up.
* Zuko lives with his uncle, having disowned his father (!) after ... something. As noted earlier, Ozai is the leader of the hyper-violent Fire Nation resistance, so it probably had something to do with that. Outwardly he's one of the passive, suppressed Fire Nation citizens, but there's rumors about this Blue Spirit character running around at night ...
* Not quite sure about Iroh. He's still a good guy, very supportive of his nephew, but he might be more passive this time, seeing as Zuko isn't in as desperate need of guidance. Perhaps he's been crushed by the loss of his son, and fears losing Zuko too, or maybe he's still part of the White Lotus, and serves as the last nudge Zuko needs to join up with Toph, Katara, and Sokka.
* Ozai is still a bad person, but not quite as terrible as in canon. He’s a narcissist who considers violence the best, if not only option; but instead of growing up as a prince of the most powerful nation fed on a diet of ethnocentric, imperialistic propaganda, he’s from the most oppressed country in the world, the victim of the ethnocentric, imperialistic propaganda, and his family hasn’t held real power for a hundred years, so his megalomania hasn't quite reached the level of canon. Plus the condition of the Fire Nation does stoke some very low-level sympathy for his people. He’s not exactly any better as a father, but he’s not as explicitly abusive, either, as he’s too busy with his causes to set his children against each other, and he doesn’t receive near enough fear or deference from those around him to be able to hurt them with impunity.
* No other thoughts, except that i'd definitely have Zuko and Katara end up together, because they are the best and i love them.

if sokka & asami existed in the same timeline (aka about the same age range), they'd be an excellent duo in innovation. they'd sit together and just bounce ideas on what to invent next. hiroshi (as a good guy) would have also loved sokka. he would've helped invent things to end the war.

I love thorki too! I've been on a fic binge recently. Got any thorki fic recommendations? Do you have any preferences for that pairing like you do with wincest and J2?
This is some great timing because I myself have also been going on a thorki fic binge! And this time I’ve actually remembered to save some of them so I do have some recs; I also do have preferences for them, I am all about the bottom!Loki.

A Season in Valhalla by welcomestars
“Thor, son of Frigga, son of Odin,” the Guard of Valhalla said in a rough monotone more reminiscent of a rockslide than a voice. They did not look down at him, but rather continued to stare straight forward. “It is not yet your time.”
Thor cleared his throat. “I know. I am here on a quest,” he explained. “I intend to find my brother and bring him home.”

Loki rolled his eyes. “Goodbye, brother.”
With that, Loki reached out and opened the door to his chambers.

i couldn't get behind the lesbian ending of lok because it felt like an ass-pull for representation after they both went for the same guy earlier, especially with the cattiness between the women before then. i also couldn't get behind kuvira because she was a cop, and because her character existing implied toph slept with a man (and was also a cop), especially when kuvira also went for men, romantically.
more than that, i'm bothered by the shitty plot, especially the way they threw out basically everything important to the world of atla. atla very strongly supported things like harmony with nature and portrayed much of industrialization as a bad thing for the world (due to both the harm it does to humans AND the harm it does to the environment), but the "better world" of lok is steampunk? only about 100 years or so have passed iirc, and the world has become a completely industrialized, westernized, capitalistic place. it's depressing. the destruction of the avatar cycle combining with that really grossed me out.
plot wise, it just felt infinitely less cohesive and controlled than atla. atla felt like it had things to say (many of them based around social justice and environmental justice), and built a strong story around those things without faltering for even a moment. lok felt like a sloppy anime that clumsily tried to forcibly inject social justice talking points into the plot. it's unfortunate because there are a few impressive character designs and concepts, and i would have loved an atla sequel following a female incarnation of the avatar (and actual, solid gay representation would be nice too), but it just failed to be anything actually impressive, imo.
on the downlow, i kind of feel it paved the way for the steven universe era of cartoons, where children's cartoons are heavily marketed to adults (who they rely on for an audience more than the actual kids the show is meant for) using nostalgic references and weirdly inserted social talking points and instances of representation that feel more like the creators are saying "LOOK HOW STUNNING AND BRAVE AND SUBVERSIVE AND PROGRESSIVE WE ARE" rather than actually trying to tell stories, convey messages they feel strongly about, or represent people authentically. i know a lot of right-wing people use that sort of argument in bad faith, but a lot of these pieces of media with gay representation or therapy talk make me feel like i'm a brand or a market audience rather than a normal type of person.

LISTEN ANON LISTEN AUGHHH
Okay! One, you're right! the lebsian ending meant a lot to my coming out development, but i was literally trying to tell people, like, "didn't this shit feel a little rushed?" like, yes they did write to each other and all that and oh, asami said she liked korra's hair (you know, like girls do).
Two, I think you've got Kuvira and Lin mixed up, but your point is no less valid since I completely understand what you're saying. i think the move to turn toph into a cop was supposed to be a funny little "isn't that crazy that the most rebellious member of the group became a cop?" but it's like, yeah, it is crazy. Two point five? If you want to tell me that Toph isn't a lesbian, I might lose some support but I can kind of understand that. To me, Toph is just a tomboy who doesn't like to be restrained. But at the same time, I also don't think that woman is one to just have sex with a cop, have fucking kids, and ugh. Like, I understand they wanted the fun of writing the offspring of a fan favorite, but honestly? Maybe Lin and Suyin should have just been adopted under some strange circumstances because I have never been able to buy that Toph slept with a man. I think that woman cares about herself and helping out when need be.
Three! Kuvira and Lin being straight is another example that another anon said about the writers not being able to fully commit. You know damn well those women aren't straight and you damn sure didn't draw them for the osa gaze. THAT WAS FOR US.

I NEVER THOUGHT OF THIS
I'll be honest, I wondered how they would go about portraying the future of this world since something that really drew me to it was the necessity of bending. To be a bender was a true boon in the original series. So much so that an entire city functioned off of it. I thought it was so cool the way the fire nation stole the concept of the hot air balloon and were able to create something arguably better around their bending. Bringing more tech advancements into the mix always felt like it would sort of ruin a little of that magic, and to me, it did. Seeing them driving and stuff, I was kind of flat faced. Like nah, what happened to the cool ass animals they ride on and stuff? It definitely took a little bit of the magic away. There had to have been a better way to push the plot into the future (if you really felt so inclined) without completely turning it over on its head.
plot wise, it just felt infinitely less cohesive and controlled than atla. atla felt like it had things to say (many of them based around social justice and environmental justice), and built a strong story around those things without faltering for even a moment. lok felt like a sloppy anime that clumsily tried to forcibly inject social justice talking points into the plot. it's unfortunate because there are a few impressive character designs and concepts, and i would have loved an atla sequel following a female incarnation of the avatar (and actual, solid gay representation would be nice too), but it just failed to be anything actually impressive, imo.
I stand by the fact that I liked the series, but people often think that means you can't talk crap about it at all, and that's simply not true. But this is. I think what I enjoyed about this continuation was the inclusion of more fight scenes. I liked seeing the different ways people used their bending. I've always loved that. I'm an action gal lmao. Plot wise, tho? I understand your point completely.

Damn, that's true. The only thing I'll say is that I don't even really think it did that either. I can't tell you any lesson I learned or was told through LoK except "gay ok" and I already knew that.
You've got some really dope perspective, anon. <3

do you have any taang headcannons
Hi Anon, thank you for the ask, and your patience! I've been neglecting my asks, but not today! lol
I do have some Taang headcanons! Believe it or not, they were my OTP back in the day, and they still have a special place in my heart :) But enough chatting. Let's talk about headcanons!
I like to think of Toph and Aang as the people in the Gaang that get together last, but they somehow end up married first (that is, in a Zutara/Sukka/Taang universe lol). They deny their feelings for quite a while because they're best friends, but then they can't ignore it anymore and they start to date! And then a month or so later, they end up married (kind of a What Happens in Vegas vibe haha!) But Toph and Aang are rather chill about this, and they just move on as a married couple LOL.
They settle in Republic City, mostly because they like the area and because they are prominent figures in getting the city up on its feet.
I like to HC that they have four oops kiddos haha! All were happy accidents, and the dunebaby names are Lin, Gyatso, Suyin, and Kenji. The girls are earthbenders, and the boys are airbenders. The babies are pretty spread out, but I like to think that Lin and Su are still born in 120 AG and 126 AG respectively. Helps me keep track of the timelines haha!
The Beifongs have a very busy and hectic life, but Toph and Aang always find the time to be with their family and to travel around the world. As the kids get older, they take them on Avatar business trips more often than not. But when they were little, Toph and Aang typically left them with their grandparents. They liked having their work trips and family trips separate as much as possible in the beginning.
Aang and Toph aren't big on PDA, but I like to think Toph's love language is touch, so she'll often stand close to Aang so their arms touch, or she'll pat his hand or lean her head on his chest for a second. Aang definitely likes to prolong these moments lol.
Aang is an early riser, and Toph isn't. But she's a light sleeper, so even though Twinkletoes gets out of bed quietly, she knows that he's awake and she finds it hard to fall back asleep without Aang there. So she's usually up with him, albeit a lil grumpy lmao.
Aang and Toph are the fun uncle and aunt. They like to wreak a bit of havoc and convince the steambabies or bladebabies that breaking the rules is okay LOL. The other members of the Gaang get a bit of a headache whenever Auntie Toph and Uncle Twinkletoes visit, but they are grateful for a bit of parenting reprieve.
They don't argue with each other much. Well, they do, but it's typically about things that aren't that important. They did argue a bit early on with some of Aang's responsibilities and him splitting his time at home and out working, and it's typically a battle for Aang to have Toph open up to him, but over the years they've been able to figure out a pretty good way to communicate with one another and talk through these issues.
Aang loves to cook, and Toph loves to eat! But whenever she has a hankering for meat, they agree to go out to eat. Sometimes, Aang will cook the main dish and Toph orders a side of meat from some nearby restaurant lmao. That, or Sokka's in town and he cooks the meat while Aang cooks the veggies haha!
Okay! I think those are the main ones I have right now! If you have specific questions about Taang or the dunebabies, feel free to ask another question and I'm happy to elaborate :)
Thanks again for the ask, Anon, and I hope you have a great day!
......
Send me asks about ATLA, LOK, or anything, really! :D

Do you like tlok
Hi anon! My answer is a very complicated one. Yes and no.
I like The Legend of Korra for giving me canon kataang, cloudbabies, and more of the characters I know and love from AtLA. I like some of the concepts they tried to tackle, and a lot of the new characters. I liked Avatar Wan, and seeing Iroh in the Spirit World of course, and I LOVE the airbabies. I am one of those people who gets SO into a world that I immediately need more of it when I finish the original piece of media, so it was lucky for me that my family and I watched AtLA for the first time during the pandemic so that we could *immediately* watch LoK after. We then bought and read all the comics (which I also have mixed feelings about, I admit). So for that reason, I am very glad that LoK exists so I could be fed.
HOWEVER (and I'm going to continue under a cut because this got long):
I don't like the way they made the cloudbabies (and other mixed-race characters like Mako and Bolin) all "pick a side." I could write a whole essay on this, and am slowly working on a fic about it but, as a mixed-race person myself, that didn't sit right with me. That's not how families or racial identity work. They would have grown up learning about and celebrating BOTH sides of their (nearly extinct!!!) heritage. They would have eaten foods from both nations, worn clothes with BOTH colors, etc etc. As the head of the modern Air Nation I can understand Tenzin's appearance, though I wish he had worn some small nod to his Water Tribe heritage as well (even just a bracelet or a blue sash/belt or something). Kya and Bumi's outfits bothered me though.
I'm not a big fan of the way LoK treated Aang, either. For what it's worth, I LOVE that every single one of the characters in AtLA were complex, multi-faceted, and nuanced. I love that no character was perfect, and that they all had (somewhat glaring!) flaws. However, given the gaps in age between the cloudbabies (and especially between Bumi and Tenzin), there is absolutely NO way that Aang didn't take the others on a family vacation *ever.* Aang would have had YEARS to bond with Bumi before any of his siblings were born, much less Tenzin, and Bumi would have been out of the house only a few years after Tenzin came into the picture. I have a much younger sister, and I know how that goes. I got lots of attention from my parents/grandparents for a while, and then I left for college and my sister got more. It's not favoritism it's just how families work sometimes. Obviously Aang would have had to spend an extensive amount of time with Tenzin to work on his airbending, on top of his Avatar duties, but that's different from just not taking family trips (and need I remind anyone that Aang is a NOMAD. I HC that he and Katara were still fairly nomadic when Bumi was born even and didn't settle down on Air Temple Island for a little while yet).
ALSO we were robbed of Aang mentoring Korra the way Roku mentors Aang throughout LoK (and the comics). Honestly I was wary of watching LoK because I knew it meant Aang had passed away and I was going to be sad, but I was looking forward to seeing him in that role, and then... it never really happened (other than that very brief "When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change" line.
I'm also not the biggest fan of how they changed the Spirits/Spirit World and the lore, but those things bothered me less than the character-centric issues. I know Nickelodeon messed with things, too, so I won't even get into the plotlines. Overall I'm glad LoK exists. I like it enough that I've seen it multiple times (at the request of my kids but still). It gave me canon confirmation that Aang and Katara got married and had babies, and that's all I really needed. I can (and do) fill in the rest with fic. Thanks for the ask, anon! Sorry it got long.

Hallo, ALTA Au where Techno is a discarded and uncared for water/blood bender who meets hesitant air bender/avatar Phil
Anon don't get me started on the atla/lok universe, I would not be able to stop talking lmao.
Techno is an orphaned waterbender and accidentally discovers he's a bloodbender when he bloodbends a person (who was probably trying to harm him). His bending is probably exploited by a powerful group, so he eventually hides it away, and pretends to be a nonbender so no one will find out. He trains himself to fight without bending and becomes one of the best and most feared warriors, everyone unaware of the true power hiding within him.
Phil, would not want the responsibility of being the avatar at all. He probably wouldn't even want to be an air nomad (well, he likes the nomad part and traveling around, but other than that he dislikes all the rules and traditions). He runs away before he even finds out he's the avatar and perhaps meets little orphan Techno (before he found out he was a bloodbender), befriends him and maybe becomes the first person to ever show him kindness? But soon enough the monks find Phil and drag him back to the air temples, tell him the truth that he's the avatar and that he can't run away, he has responsibilities he needs to attend to. So Phil stays put (because he's being guarded all the time now) and trains for years to master the elements. And once he becomes a full master, on the day of the ceremony to celebrate him becoming a fully fledged avatar, he leaves. He does leave a note this time, saying he's going to travel the world and help people out wherever he can, but he's not going be on the beck and call of anyone.
And maybe, he ends up meeting Techno again, but because it's been years and Techno is no longer the little orphan, but now a massive scarred and heavily muscled warrior, Phil does not recognize him. Techno, on the other hand, recognizes Phil (his first friend and first love) but pretends he doesn't, not wanting to see the disappoint in Phil's eyes once he sees what Techno has become.
Techno tries to stay away from Phil and ignore him, but unfortunately for him, that just makes Phil all the more intrigued in Techno. Because he's the avatar! People love him, flock to him! So what's this warrior's deal?
They end up traveling together (aka Phil bats his eyelashes at Techno and convinces him to travel with him), Techno keeping his secret close to him and Phil just happy to have someone around who cares about him and not "the avatar".
