Okay but all of the Hex Squad’s complex feelings towards the human realm?
Hunter, who heard all these stories from his uncle that he was fascinated by, who is a clone of a human (a statue of whom is literally in the town), who loves learning new things and has probably been talking to Gus. Bus instead he just saw his uncle get killed by a kid in front of him (which on its own is a lot to deal with), and then ran to the human realm, where it pretty much all started. Where he will find out how intertwined his history is with the town’s. Where he will have a near constant reminder of the town seal, the Golden Guard sigil, and the weight of that legacy. Plus the fact that Belos is probably in the human realm too, and will go after him if possible.
Gus, who spent years learning all he could about the human realm, who has a collection of human items in his room. Gus who wanted to be an ambassador to the human realm and so wanted to experience the rain. And he did, after losing everything and everyone but the hex squad. Gus who in what should have been an amazing moment playing in the rain, fell to the ground sobbing. And, he saw Belos’ memories of him killing his brother, which is traumatizing on his own, especially since he looks exactly like Hunter, which Gus is more than smart enough to figure out. And he may not know who he can talk to about it. And seeing that statue every time they go into town won’t help. Gus who every time they turn on the news, gets a reminder of his dad, who he has no idea whether he is okay or not, or when he can see him again.
Willow, who heard all about the human realm from Gus. Who probably got a bit excited about it. Who’s best friend is a human. And her entire world got turned upside down, with no idea what happened to her dads or everyone else on the isles. It was her idea to go to the human realm, and now they are stuck for who knows how long.
Amity, who’s girlfriend is a human, who gets to meet her girlfriend’s mom, and is probably nervous about it and wants to make a good impression and seem perfectly okay. Even though within two days her family fell apart, she had to leave her dying dad behind, she tried to stop the literal emperor, failed, and had to run for her life to the human realm, with no knowledge of what happened to her family or if the twins were okay since they were left behind with Odalia?. Who has no idea when she her family again, or what it will be like when she does.
And Luz. Luz who is a human, but never fit in. She was probably bullied and has no friends in the realm besides the ones she brought with her. Liz who ran away from the human realm to escape her life there. Luz who tried to stay behind with her family, but King pushed into the portal, which immediately closed behind her. Luz who promised to never go back to the only place she’s ever been happy, and thought she had much more time before she had to go back. Luz who now that she promised to stay may never see her found family again, and while she loves Camila so much and is glad to see her mom again, she misses her mom on the boiling isles, who supported her in a way Camila couldn’t. Luz who has no idea what is happening on the BI but thinks it is her fault.
I really hope they have the time in season 3 to go into this because there is so much there to unpack.

im thinking of random toh headcanons ive got floating around in my head:
1. i feel like this is pretty much fanon all across the board for the most part, but luz “weak nerd arms” noceda grew more physically active post-boiling isles but the difference isn’t really noticed until she’s in the human realm again and oh hey! that nerd from gym class? luz has got endurance in spades; she’s a regular at free running now. and she’s gotten an offer from the cheer squad to join once she returns but she turns them down. she and hunter go running in the park on the weekends bc luz is now a flexible speed demon and hunter’s kind of glad she can keep up with him.
2. hunter definitely gets into gaming. not just board games but mmorpgs and turn based games and all sorts. does he get into CoD? yes and no, bc on one hand, battling it out with a team with no lethalness involved helps burn out a lot of his anxiety that springs him into fight mode, but he can’t do mics bc his team mates are annoying and rude and will not take the match seriously like he does. he likes leisurely decision based games, like nitw and oxenfree, bc one, exploration and two, lore. the boy loves mysteries so he gets super into video game lore, im talking YouTube essays talking about themes and Easter eggs and pop culture.
3. willow tends to keep her insecurities close to her chest. she likes being the voice of reason and dependable for her friends bc she’s no longer considered useless “half-a-witch” willow, but she’ll avoid talking about her own emotions if she can. she’d rather put her energy towards something more constructive like her gardening and working out, and while her friends do their best to make sure she’s included in any and all bonding activities, willow will internalize. she will speak with Gus about it on occasion, and she feels only a little bit distant from Luz now since she and Amity are dating and she’s understanding, so inevitably she reveals bits and pieces with hunter. as a result, they spar whenever she has to deal with bouts of frustration. it’s shameless how they flirt.
4. since the day of unity and upon their inevitable return to the boiling isles, Gus wants to use his illusion talents in a more self-defensive manner? generally it’s used more for distraction and evasion, but when he starts working out with willow and hunter, combined with input from amity whose magic is mainly combat based, he becomes more flexible with how he uses his illusions.
5. on top of combat, Gus spends his time building his knowledge of the human realm, which goes without saying, but he partners with Eda on selling her human realm products now that they know what things actually are and what they’re used for. human realm technology becomes pretty popular in the demon realm bc of Gus.
6. amity and her father finally get closer. it’s really slow-going, but with her mother out of the picture they’ve gotten a chance to experiment with abominations with honest-to-titan creativity, and not just creating abominations for combat. as a result, they start trying to use abomination clay for more practical every day applications like construction and travel, but also abominations to explore areas of the isles that are too dangerous for normal witches to access.
7. Gus and Matt still help protect the looking glass ruins, and they’ve grown closer in their friendship. Gus is still leagues beyond Matt in terms of illusion magic, but Matt inspires creativity in mischief, so they become a prank trickster duo that rivals the Blight twins. and since Gus loves to express himself creatively, they end up reinvigorating Hexside’s long dead theater program. they are the most beloved theater kids in the entire school.
8. hunter and willow dance around each other for a good year and a half after the day of unity. their friends have a betting pool going on. Hunter fell first, but Willow spent a good while trying to figure out exactly why she’s so attached to this boy. when it finally hits her she adamantly refuses to talk about it, and they are the friends everyone thinks is already dating. Luz is in agony. Amity is amused. Gus is amused. all parties involved in the bet are just eating popcorn.
9. and I only just realized this like a week ago when I was rewatching the first season with my friend, and it’s not really a headcanon but more of an interpretation I guess BUT. but of course, magic is a gift from the isles, which is the Titan. and who was with Luz when she first discovered the light glyph? King. Luz was chosen not because she was destined; she was chosen bc she wanted to love and protect her friends and family. King chose her, didn’t even realize it, because of who she is as a person. because she loves him and he loves her and this realization MAKES ME SO EMOTIONAL TO THINK ABOUT. THE POWER OF CHOSEN/FOUND FAMILY IDC IF THIS DOESNT MAKE PERFECT SENSE IT DOES IN MY HEART.

Kinktober 2023 Day 12- Costumes
The Owl House-Lumity
On the eve of Halloween, Luz and Amity get really involved in playing their characters, and it leads them to new discoveries
written by @kinktober2023
requested by anon on tumblr
Warning the following story contains fictional minors in sexual situations. If this makes you uncomfortable or are under 18 please do not read. This story is rated E for explicit and is for adults only. This story is a complete work of fiction.
It was the night before Halloween, and Luz was putting the finishing touches on her Halloween costume. Amity had suggested an Aurza and Hecate theme custom and damn it was such a good idea, even with her down attitude that Luz said yes.
She was seeing how the hat would work with the green wig. She turned her head and neither the hat or wig fell off. The 14-year-old was standing in her (now) shared bedroom; looking over her costume in front of a full body mirror.
Willow’s head popped in. “She’s decent.” It was difficult to share a single room between four teens without everyone seeing a bit of T&A. It wasn’t such a big deal save for the couple, who tried to preserve their privacy with each other. Sure enough after Willow’s head went back in, Amity shuffled in. Luz’s throat went dry. Man, Amity looked beautiful dressed as Hecate. She seemed to have other opinions.
“This is a disaster!”
“Amity, what's wrong? Your costume looks amazing! And so book accurate.”
“Book accurate? Book accurate?! Luz I only have one face! Hecate has two. It’s her thing! I look like a poser.”
“Well maybe we could make something-”
“Already tried. I used a paper plate but I couldn’t keep it on my face.”
“Maybe Gus could…”
“That requires too much concentration and I don’t want him to miss a new human holiday.”
“Hmm, that is quite a pickle. Does it matter? Amity, your costume is incredible; second face or no.” Amity could only sigh. Luz racked her brain. “Hecate. How dare you say something so awful about my true love.” Remembering how the scene went in the book, she took Amity’s hand. “Your eyes sparkle like the greatest stars in the night sky. Your voice is merrier than the most musical of bells. And your lips are sweeter than the rippest of fruit.” Her face was inches from Amity’s.
“So we’re doing that scene?”
Luz blushed and pulled away embarrassed. The scene she was quoting was rather infamous in the Azura fandom. It’s from book five, where Azura says this to Hecate and they kiss… and the book jumps to the next chapter, where it is morning and the two characters are in bed together. It is about as risque as a 6-11 year old targeted series could get. It had become quite the meme.
“No, this isn’t wasn’t I-”
Amity took Luz’s hand. “Azura, you are the bravest, cleverest, and the most beautiful witch to walk this land. My heart is yours.” Their lips melted together in a burst of passion. Amity’s hands groped Luz’s chest while Luz’s hands explored Amity’s backside. The kiss broke. “Are we doing this?” Amity asked.
“I’m game if you are Blight.”
The teens resumed kissing. Carefully, they removed each other's clothes as they didn’t want to damage each other's Halloween costumes. It was the most care any 14-year-olds ever had when undressing each other. This was the first time Luz and Amity really had a chance to see each other’s bodies. While staying in the Noceda’s home, they had been some awkward moments of walking into the bedroom while changing but Luz and Amity did their best that those remain accidental and quick peeks. Never before had they drunk in each other's forms.
Luz’s brown skin was complemented by black nipples, both of which were hard against her small breasts. Luz was never much for grooming, and her bush was rather noticeable nude. Amity's pink nipples was similarly hard on her tiny boobs. But back on the Boiling Isles, Amity kept herself downstairs completely hair free. But human realm razors scared her. While she used them for her pits and legs (those were visible depending on the outfit.), she was not willing to put one of those things near her privates. So she had a small patch of fuzz the same color as her roots. Amity felt so embarrassed, her body hair exposed to her girlfriend.
But Luz didn't care. Fiercely, more passionately than they ever did before; it set their whole bodies a flame. Luz moved toward Amity’s neck while her rough tomboy fingers carcassed Amity’s tiny bush. They soon moved lower down to her sex. Her vagina was already wet and hot. "Amity, can I touch it?"
"Gahmm, yes. Please."
The witch gasped as Luz’s fingers penetrated her. Luz was nervous, never really done anything like this before. She recalled what she liked to do to herself while masturbating, and tried to mimic that. It seemed to have worked as Amity writhed under Luz’s touch. The human repeatedly kissed her as she was fingered.
"Luz, Luz, Luuuz!" Amity’s whole body shook as she came, her pussy squirting furiously.
As Luz sat back down and started wiping her hands with some kleenex, Amity made her way toward her girlfriend. Luz giggled as she felt a series of kisses up and down her thighs. Amity’s own fingers made their way to Luz’s own snatch. Her pink walls, wet with slick, shone against her brown skin. Luz’s head rolled as she took in the pleasure of getting finger banged.
Amity was determined to make Luz feel as good as Luz made her feel. Luz’s walls quivered around the witch's fingers.
"Oh Amity. Oh Amity!"
Luz came, squirting slightly less than Amity did, but the lavender haired witch's face was much closer, so much if it ended on her face.
"Oh Amity! I'm sorry. Here." As Luz wiped her slick if her girlfriend's face, Amity kissed her.
"I see why they skipped this scene in the chapter."
"I don't know. This was the best scene in the series."

Why Amity fell for Luz: A Theory
Watching all the episodes of The Owl House and reviewing them brought back a lot of thoughts and feelings that I maybe forgot about. We all ship things and sometimes we do it for fun; sometimes for deeper reasons. I just started lumity because it reminded me of Diana & Akko from Little Witch Academia. I loved that show so much that I wanted more, and I thought it would be cool if Luz & Amity did something similar. I had no idea that it was going to go beyond that, so DAMN. To quote a talking science wolf, “For years we ask how, but we should ask why.” I mean, we saw how. But why? Well I can take a guess.
Tumblr media
If we’re are going to start anywhere it’s going to be with the girl in question, Amity Blight.
Tumblr media
As far as I know as of this typing, Amity Blight is a witchling from The Boiling Isles. She lives in Bonesboro at The Blight Manor estate with her parents and her siblings. She attends Hexside School of Magic and Demonics. Good for her.
Amity has an ambitious and competitive personality. She’s always striving to be better and be at the top of whatever she is doing. When she’s introduced in I Was a Teenage Abomination, she’s showing having great pride in being the top student in her abomination class. In Adventures in the Elements, she goes to The Knee in hopes of training to beat her siblings’ high score on the placement exam.
Tumblr media
Amity also has a bit of a temper and gets annoyed easily. In I Was a Teenage Abomination, she sics her abominations on Willow and Luz just because she wasn’t named top student that day. In Enchanting Grom Fright, Amity snapped at the person she bumped into before realizing it was Luz. And later in the same episode, Amity beat up Hooty when he decided to get too close.
But she does have a soft sensitive side. She keeps a diary in her secret room in the library and even reads to kids in her free time. Amity also has a strong sense of integrity. She despises cheating (and cheaters) and feels guilt when she’s forced to break ties with Willow.
So why did someone like this fall for Luz of all people? (see above image)
Enter what I call my Shipping Theory of Compliments
The Shipping Theory of Compliments is that two characters would be shipped and sometimes canonically enter a romantic relationship based on their personalities complimenting each other and fulfilling elements they don’t have alone necessary to developing the character.
People like to use the image of a missing puzzle piece, but I don’t like that comparison because I think it’s a little inaccurate and I don’t like puzzles. Think of it more like the two pieces of the yin and yang coming together and then growing the circles of the opposite colors in them.
Tumblr media
Something like that.
And it’s compliments, not opposites. When you think compliments, think more Star and Marco from Star vs the Forces of Evil. Star wants to go on a magical adventure. Marco also wants to go on a magic adventure. The difference is that Star goes in recklessly while Marco wants to plan it out a bit. They still have their adventure as oppose to Star’s opposite who wouldn’t want to go on a magical adventure. That sort of thing.
So how do Luz and Amity compliment each other?
Let’s start with that they have in common. Obvious stuff aside, they’re both training to become the best witches they can be. The difference comes that Luz is a human who has to learn magic via glyphs that she finds and Amity learns magic the “proper” way on The Boiling Isles.
Luz and Amity are also both fans of The Good Witch Azura book series. Difference is that Luz is more open about her fandom while Amity tries to keep it a secret. Also petty thing but they’re both fan artists too, but I think Luz might be a better than Amity. But hey, her crosshatching is improving.
Luz and Amity are also (at the start of the series) both lonely people. Luz’s mom says that she doesn’t have any friends, and Amity doesn’t like her “friends.” The difference is that Luz reaches outward to ease her loneliness (being social and friendly, trying new things, etc.) while Amity reaches inward (keeping a diary, staying busy, having a secret spot, etc.). They both also use escapist fiction to ease their loneliness.
That’s all well and good, but now we get into the real speculative parts.
...complimenting each other and fulfilling elements they don’t have alone necessary to developing the character.
When I was taking acting classes I was taught that the way you see people act is a persona based on their experiences on what it takes to survive and avoid physical, emotional and social death. So now we have to speculate based on what we were given on what emotional/social needs and wants has Amity not been getting before that she has with Luz.
First let me point you to another show called F is for Family. F is for Family is an adult animated sitcom on Netflix that follows a very dysfunctional family in the 1970s. These are legitimately bad characters, not in terms of being poorly written. What I’m saying is that these guys are assholes. But here’s where it gets interesting.
One of the characters is Kevin Murphy, the teenage son of the family. He’s a dim-witted wannabe rockstar who is always yelled at and put down by his parents throughout the entire series. However in season four Kevin meets Alice. Alice teaches Kevin that his favorite band is a big reference to Tolkien and gives him a copy of The Hobbit. They bond over their love of Lord of the Rings and get along really well. Alice calls him smart for being able to read all of Lord of the Rings over a few days and never puts him down. Even in the one time they did fight she never yelled at him or raised her voice which he found weird because he’s so used to being yelled at. Alice gave Kevin the emotional support he always wanted but never got from his family.
Using that as a backdrop, let’s go back to Amity.
Tumblr media
Amity grew up with her parents making her do things she didn’t want to do, making choices for her. Amity wanted to be one way. Her parents wanted something else. Amity’s mother even dyes Amity’s hair green so it matches her siblings. Amity wanted to be friends with Willow. Amity’s parents wanted her to be friends with the mean kids. While Amity does work hard to be the best at what she’s doing, her parents also put pressure on her to make sure that she is at that level.
Tumblr media
Her siblings are another bag of awful. They constantly refer to her by an annoying nickname that I’m guessing has an embarrassing moment attached to it. They seem to live by a double standard that Amity despises. She has to work hard and follow the rules just to be accepted while they are naturally talented and break the rules with everyone still thinking that they’re perfect.
Family is supposed to provide unconditional love except it looks like the love of the Blights is based on conditions. Nobody just likes Amity for who she is. She doesn’t have a friend.
Enter: the friendliest person she’s ever met
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amity has to struggle and work for the simplest things, even affection. Except when it comes to Luz. Luz is naturally friendly and positive. Amity doesn’t have to earn her kindness. Even when she’s bullied Luz before, Luz is always coming back with a smile. I suppose when you live life surrounded by jerks, you’ll want to hang out with the one person who’s always nice to you. Sort of.
Yes, Amity did think Luz was a bully for constantly getting her into trouble. But even at Covention and Lost in Language, Luz kept reaching out to her. This combined with Amity’s awareness of her own behavior is what convinced her to try to reach out in kind to Luz by the end of Lost in Language. “She’s trying to be nice to me, so I should try too,” I’m guessing is the mindset especially in Adventures in the Elements. And then...Luz continued to be nice to her which is kind of a big deal for Amity.
Let’s tally up what we have so far:
Luz and Amity have similar interests (The Good Witch Azura series, art, fiction, learning magic)
Luz and Amity have similar values (work ethic, disdain for cheating, protecting those closest to you, etc.)
Luz gives Amity the positivity and affection that Amity doesn’t normally get anywhere else
They still have differing personalities with Amity being more competitive and Luz having more of a live-and-let-live attitude.
Even with all these things in mind, why was Amity so scared to ask Luz to Grom?
Speculating again but my theory is that Amity wasn’t sure if Luz actually liked her or if Luz is just friendly because that’s how Luz is. Amity was scared of being rejected because she felt that maybe she was just reading the situation wrong. Luz is this ray of sunshine in her gray skies (if you’ll forgive the cliché). People like Amity always think of all the worst possibilities (I know because I do this too). Amity was probably thinking a bunch of what ifs. “What if Luz doesn’t actually like me? What if she’s just being friendly because she feels sorry for me? What if she has feelings for someone else? What if she never actually liked me? What if she’s straight?”
Luz is Amity’s first crush and it is scary as all hell to put yourself out there like that for the first time. She wasn’t expecting to get married at Grom night. She just wanted to dance with the girl she liked.
The dance at Grom was like confirmation for her that it could happen. Amity didn’t have to ask out Luz because Luz asked her. Being with Luz isn’t a pipedream. It’s a definite possibility. And we all know how she reacted to that idea.
Tumblr media
Uh...she’ll be in her bunk.
While Luz and Amity aren’t together as of this typing, I believe it’s bound to happen. Until then, after The Lumity Trilogy, Amity knows that Luz is the girl she likes.
tl;dr version
Amity fell for Luz because they have similar interests and values, their personalities differ in a compatible way and Luz provides Amity emotional needs and wants that she doesn’t get anywhere else.
Also, round eared girl pretty.
.
Thanks everyone for reading.

Analyzing Alador Blight (Sorry no pictures...)
Warning: This theory may be clunky and contain spoilers for The Owl House. I also do not have a psychology degree so whatever I analyze is mostly off of limited research, analysis, and personal experience. If something is inaccurate or offensive, I apologize deeply- that is not my intention. If you have any words of criticism or agreement, please kindly share them.
When Alador Blight first appeared onscreen, people were weary and suspicious of him. When he made his official appearance, most people instantly fell in love with his goofy personality and completely opposite nature to his wife Karen Odalia. However, people are still weary of him and not very happy that he helps enforce his wife’s insane treatment towards their daughter Amity. And many people are confused on why he seems so different from his first debut or why he doesn’t divorce Odalia and take the kids with him. But- I think I have the answers to tie up all these loose ends.
Let’s start of with the basic suspicion most people have... Alador Blight is very likely on a neurodivergent spectrum. He has special interests that take most of his attention away from the world around him such making abomitrons and chasing butterflies. While he tends to remain mostly silent and seemingly in his own little world, he does speak to Luz directly when she asks what it is Blight Industries does.
For the sake of this theory, I’m going to go ahead and say that Mr. Blight might be on the Autism Spectrum. It is possible given his attention span that he may have ADHD, but my knowledge on that is limited so I’m going to go off with what I know. Some variation of autism also might be the more likely candidate given that not only does Alador have special interests and deep focus on those interests, he also doesn’t quite react (and I apologize if I offend anyone with this statement) to emotional situations in ways more neurotypical people might. This in Autism can often be interpreted as a lack of empathy.
Alador does have empathy as we’ve seen him looked shocked and sad when a butterfly he chased was crushed by the hand of his wife. He has also shown somewhat a bit of empathy towards Luz at the demonstration where he warns her that Blight Industries focuses mostly on weaponry and that she “might want to duck” from an incoming projectile. And when Luz asked for the demonstration to stop, he was the first one to pipe up and say, “She has a point, Odalia.” That of course did nothing to stop Odalia or the abomitron which raises the question again of why does he put up with Odalia.
In my own personal experience (contributing to the Autistic theory), I was always told people on the Autism Spectrum tend to be “rule oriented”. For the sake of this analysis, let’s assume that statement is somewhat true and apply it to Alador Blight. Why? Because this key to his character...
The times Alador does act serious seemingly without his wife’s manipulation, he always mentions the Blight family as a whole. For example, in Understanding Willow, he says, “Blights only associate with the strongest of witchlings.” When he confronts his wife with her own “A Blight always upholds their end of the deal” he mentions the family name again. This to me suggests these were things his parents or other Blight relatives told him (assuming that Odalia married into the name Blight while Alador always was a Blight). He’s enforcing the rules of his family. If that’s the case, it might also explain why he follows Odalia’s crazy regime of tiger mom Karen. Perhaps he’s used to being told what to do and/or her attitude to how her daughter should behave is similar to the Blight standards he grew up with. In his mind, the standards of being a Blight must not be broken.
Whether or not that “Blight Rule” following is a sign of his own abuse from family or simply being a rule follower shall remain ambiguous for now and whether or not he is on the Autism spectrum and if it contributes to his enforcement will be left up to you or remain obscure until further is revealed. (sorry for that run on sentence) But this “Blight Rule” probably explains why he wasn’t too troubled on getting Gus, Willow, and Luz expelled from Hexside via his wife’s request. Blights only associating with a ”select few” as Amity puts it while clearly Odalia being a female dog and controlling/ manipulating her daughter, he probably thinks he’s contributing to helping his daughter succeed by only associating with the best.
As far as we can tell though, Alador does still exercise his own form of control over his wife’s craziness. During the Blight sale, he did see his daughter stand up to Odalia and his unstoppable creation and seemed quite fond about how strong she has become (which he mentions when confronting Odalia) (he probably also knows about Lumity too and supports it- but that’s for another time). He isn’t afraid to confront Odalia on her own contradicting lies and even somewhat even perhaps has his own way of manipulating his wife as he puts the notion in her head that Amity might become a coven head someday. Given that it appears that the Blights seem to only like being “the best” (or in Amity and possibly Alador’s case feel pressured to be the best) (not sure about Edric and Emira- they seem to like to just have fun), Alador could be speaking the truth. However, given that his eyes were on another flying creature while talking to her and immediately he goes chasing after it, he may have been trying to ham her up so that she kept up her end of the deal and perhaps realize Amity is stronger before going after things that matter to him.
I’m sure Amity does matter to him and is probably one of the main reasons why he goes along with Odalia too. But he does also seem to really like tiny creatures that move too (Edric might be the same way given the bat situation at the Knee). Speaking of Alador and Amity, Amity seems to have picked up the habit of enforcing the “Blight Rule” too often saying “We Blights” when describing her behavior like who she associates with and what she does.
Is Alador a completely evil parent for letting his wife use Amity the way she does? Is Amity a reflection of his own upbringing and values? Does he associate with Odalia because of these values? Will we see him change? Well we’ll have to await for more information in further episodes but hopefully, we will have our answers soon. If you have any questions or theories, please share them or tag me in them. I’d love to hear and discuss. And I apologize again if I got any neurodivergent facts wrong or offended anyone by my observation. Hope I helped you understand Alador and thank you for reading my theory.

The Song Of The Titan
Chapter Thirty-One,
Everyone went to prepare for the upcoming fight. Amity left with her twin brother and sister to warn their parents about Belo's plan and figure out a way to deal with the abomatons. Willow and Guz left to gather any more support to help, starting with the students at Hexside, who weren't in a coven yet. Luz, Eda, and Azura were helping the witch apprentice with her palisman that she had finally decided on to make. Del and Gwendolyn, along with King and Oberon and Raine, were talking with Lilith on how to get to Belos while also dealing with some of the coven scouts and any of his supporters.
Hunter was sitting down with a set of tools near him that he asked Eda if he could borrow, who brought it up from the basement. In his hands was Azara's necklace. He was trying to fix and repair it, if they were to have any chances against his uncle. The gears and screws were scattered on the floor as he tried to place each one back into place. Lil Rascal and Jewel chirped often to help him, while handing Hunter some of the tools that he needed.
"Need some more help?" Hunter jumped, startled by John's voice. He was so focused on fixing Azara's necklace that he didn't notice or even hear her little brother, who was sitting next to him.
"Uh, sure." Hunter replied, softly, then went back to working on the necklace.
"So, you live in a castle right? Does that mean that you're a prince?" John asked him as he handed Hunter a wrench that he needed. Hunter paused for a moment then answered him.
"Yeah, why do you ask?" He questioned her brother. Hunter heard him giggle.
"I can't believe that my sister fell in love with an actual prince. That only usually happens in fairy tales." John said. "Although, mostly they usually turn out grim at the end." Hunter's eyes widened a little disturbed.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"Well, there's several made by The Grimm Brothers. Like, the little mermaid, where Ariel trades her voice for human legs to a sea witch so she can be with her true love, the prince. But, she only had a few days to get him to fall in love with her or she will be turned into sea foam. Only to find out the prince was marrying another girl who he thought saved him from drowning. The mermaid's sisters each traded their hair to the sea witch so that they can save their sister, giving her a dagger. The only way that she can be saved was to kill the prince. But, she loved him so much that she sacrificed herself."
Hunter cringed after hearing what Azara's little brother told him. His story was not too different. Caleb and Philip would definitely fit with the Grimm brothers, whoever they were. "Okay, I get your point. But, I'm not going to let anything happen to Azara. I love her."
"I know and she loves you too. I'm glad that she has someone like you." John smiled.
"And she's glad to have a brother who cares about her." Hunter said to him.
"I wouldn't mind having a brother like you." John told him. Hunter's eyes widened before he made a small smile. Then the two paused when they heard a small tune coming from the music box in the necklace. Their eyes widened as they heard the music playing more clearer now and out of tune. It was fixed!
"Yes!" Hunter cheered.
"You did it!" John exclaimed.
"What you talking about? WE did it." Hunter corrected. Lil Rascal and and Jewel chirped happily as they flew in celebration.
"Did what?" The two heard Eda's voice ask. They turned around to see the owl lady, Azara and Luz, as the three walked into the room. John ran over to them.
"It's fixed! Mom's necklace is fixed!" He shouted, happily. Hunter walked over to them and held out the necklace to Azara. Her eyes widened in surprise. It looked completely new, like it was never broken. She smiled and took it from Hunter then quickly pounced Hunter with a hug, wrapping her arms around him.
"Thank you!" she cried. Hunter cheeks turned red as did his ears, blushing.
"Well, we're going to need this if we're going to have any chance of winning against Belos." He replied. Azura pulled away from him.
"Can you help put it on for me?" she asked him. She turned around and lifted her hair up and Hunter placed the necklace around her neck, tying it. Azura looked down, holding the necklace in her hand, smiling. Hunter smiled as well, glad to see her more happier again. Suddenly, the two saw everyone in the room staring at them with smug looks. Hunter and Azara both blushed at the unwanted attention that they were getting.
"S-So, what did you decide on making?" Hunter quickly asked Luz, turning to her. Everyone heard a bird chirping and saw a blue jay fly through the door behind Eda and Luz, landing on the apprentice's shoulder.
"What are you going to call it?" John asked her.
"Crystal." Luz replied.
Hooty slammed opened the door. "Hey, there's a whole lot of people out here to see you guys!"
Everyone stepped out to see Amity, along with the blight twins, with Alador and his wife Odalia. Willow and Guz had recruited all of the students at Hexside and Principle Bump. Finally an army to stand a chance. Hooty made himself portable and attached himself to a back pack, strapping himself onto Lilith. Del, Gwendolyn, Lilith, King and Oberon were telling everyone about the plan, explaining it to them. John came up with an idea to combine potions with different glpyhs, creating the first alchemy.
Hunter noticed that Azara looked more tense and nervous than before.
"Are you okay?" he asked her.
"No, I'm worried about what's going to happen. There's so much that could go wrong." She said, worried. "I don't want anyone else to die."
Hunter stared at Azara, worried as well. He knew that she was right. It could go either way. He took her hand, holding it in his.
"We can do this. As long as were together." He told her. Azura smiled and pulled Hunter closer to her, kissing him.
"Whatever happens, know that I love you." she told him. Hunter sighed melting in her touch, fearing that it may the last time.
"I love you, too." Hunter told her.

Moonlit Masquerade: Under the Lights
“So, do you know what your plans for this weekend are?” Willow asked her Monday as they sat eating lunch and waiting on Luz, who’d hadn’t shown up from class yet.
Amity looked up from her sandwich, still chewing the bite in her mouth. She quickly swallowed it.
“I don’t have any that I know of yet, why?“
“What about your anniversary?” Gus asked as he looked up from his own food.
“My anniversary?” Amity repeated, looking just as confused as she sounded. “What anniversary?” She turned to the illusion track student.
Willow seemed to realize something as her eyes went wide and she shook her hands.
“Nothing, nevermind…,” she started to say, but Gus, heedless of the fact that Amity was clueless and Willow was trying to back track, went on.
“Luz said this Saturday was your one month anniversary and she was thinking of doing something for you,” he said, not noticing the look Willow was now giving him.
Amity blinked at him before horror slowly began to dawn upon her face.
Gus and Willow watched, fascinated as she dropped her sandwich and slapped both hands to her cheeks.
“Titan, I didn’t even think about it!” she yelped. “I’m such a bad girlfriend,” she groaned.
Willow shot Gus another look and the younger witch looked back and forth between the two before coming to his own realization.
“Ooh… sorry,” he mumbled, hunkering down behind his food. Willow sighed, before turning back to Amity.
“You’re not a bad girlfriend, Amity. You’re just not the type to do that coupley thing where you feel like you have to celebrate every month, a lot of people aren’t.” Willow shrugged, spearing some of her salad on her fork.
Amity couldn’t deny that that was true, she had seen plenty of couples, like Skara and her boyfriend, do that nauseating thing where they celebrated being a couple every two weeks or some other absurdly short amount of time and she’d always thought it was silly.
Now that she and Luz were dating she found herself whistling a different tune.
Not that she was going to start making a big deal out of every other week like some people.
After spending almost a month and a half pining after Luz only for them to now be dating, and for a month? That was worth something to her.
“But I should know that Luz would be that kind of person, and of course she’s already thinking about it,” she groaned, burying her face in her hands. Gus and Willow shared a sympathetic look.
“Well, based on what she said this morning, I don’t think she has any kind of plan yet,” Willow tried to assure her. “She really only mentioned it and that she might want to do something.”
Amity shot up ramrod straight at that, smacking both her fists on the table.
“I still have time then, I can beat her to it.” Amity seemed to be talking more to herself from the two of them.
“I could be wrong, but I don’t think it’s a competition, Amity.” Willow looked at her, mildly concerned.
“No, of course it isn’t, it’s just…” She searched for the right words. “After everything Luz did last month, the gifts and notes… the dance… I want to be able to do something big for her back. We hang out all the time after school and on the weekends and we call them dates but I want to do something more…,” she trailed off, thinking.
“Romantic?” Willow finished with a knowing grin as she took a bite of her lunch.
Amity’s face pinked, but she nodded, clenching her fists.
“Well…,” Willow hummed thoughtfully. “Grand gestures are kind of Luz’s thing, it’s how she shows she cares, so if you did some big romantic gesture I’m sure it would blow her away.” She smiled.
“Yeah!” Gus slapped his palms on the table. “Something big and flashy, with some pizazz!” Her twirled a finger and confetti burst into the air, dissolving into sparks of blue magic as it hit the table.
“Well, maybe not quite like that,” Willow giggled. “But something,” she agreed.
“Flashy isn’t really my thing…” Amity frowned, drumming her fingers on the table as she rested her chin in her other hand, brows furrowed in thought.
“I’m sure whatever you do, Luz will love it.” Willow smiled softly at her childhood friend.
Speaking of…
Luz chose that moment to come dashing into the cafeteria and headed straight for them.
“Hey, all my favorite people!” She hopped over the bench to plop into the spot next to Amity as she reached across the table to high five Gus and shoot Willow a finger gun before turning to Amity with a bright grin. “And my favorite girlfriend,” she said quietly with a wink.
Amity found herself grinning back, cheeks only turning a little pink now when the other girl casually flirted with her.
“I had better be your only girlfriend, Noceda,” she teased, only just holding back her laughter as Luz clutched dramatically at her chest and gasped in mock affront.
“As if there could ever be anyone else, Cariño.” She couldn’t hold the facade for long and broke into a wide grin, reaching under the table to give Amity’s knee a brief squeeze. They did their best to refrain from any physical displays or words of affection at school, though Luz occasionally, sneakily, did something like that; it was just who she was.
Willow rolled her eyes at the couple and Gus made a gagging motion.
“Sorry it took so long, some chimera’s got loose in beast keeping near the end of class…,” Luz launched into a story.
The rest of lunch went by quickly and soon the bell’s screaming echoed over the din of the lunch room.
“Oh, I better get to potions!” Luz jumped up.
“Wait, Luz.” Amity’s hand on her forearm made her still. “Do you have plans for Saturday?” she asked, already knowing the answer, but she couldn’t let her know that.
“Nope, why?”
“There’s something I wanted to do Saturday, with you.”
“Sure, what?” Luz cocked her head curiously.
“It’s a surprise.” Amity smiled at the way Luz’s dark eyes lit up with the word.
“Ooh, I see.” she grinned. “Well, I’m all yours Saturday then.”
“Perfect” she smiled at the words ‘all yours’ and felt the familiar warm and tingly sensation that filled her whole body whenever Luz said or did something that struck that certain chord in her heart.
“See you guys later.” She waved at Gus and Willow, who waved back before turning to Amity. “After school?” she asked with a meaningful look that made Amity smile sadly.
She’d been thinking about it all through lunch and she had an idea, but if she wanted it to become a reality she’d need to start right after school.
“I can’t today…” She hated the way Luz’s shoulders fell at the words but Saturday would make her disappointment now worth it.
“Alright,” she pouted. “I’ll see you in class tomorrow?” she asked, making Amity roll her eyes.
“Of course, you dork,” she huffed but Luz only grinned.
“Adiós, Cariño!” Luz waved as she jogged out of the cafeteria toward the potions hall.
Once she was gone Amity turned back to the others at the table.
“What does ‘Cariño’ mean?” she asked. They just shrugged. Luz had started calling her that last week and she always forgot to ask about it.
“You have a plan for Saturday?” Willow cocked a brow questioningly at the familiar look on Amity’s face.
“I have an idea…,” she said. “But I need to start first thing after school… and I may need a little help…” she looked at them.
The two shared a glance before turning back to her with matching smiles.
“What do you need?”
~ ~
Amity’s plan was slowly forming in her head as she hurried to the Bonesburough market as soon as the last bell screamed.
She knew exactly what she wanted to do and where, but she needed some extra information first if it was gonna be perfect.
She needed to talk to Eda, and she knew from Luz that Eda had started selling things again in the market just last week, figuring some of the pressure around her had died down.
She turned the corner and spotted the rickety stand being manned by the Owl Lady herself, though she was wearing a wrap around her head and some sunglasses.
Amity wasn’t sure who that disguise was supposed to fool since Eda was the most wanted criminal in the Isles, but that was Eda’s business.
She walked up to the stand and waited for the customer finishing their purchase to leave before approaching.
Eda noticed her quickly.
“Hey, kid. Need some human paraphernalia for your human?” she asked with a grin and a wink, making Amity flush.
“No, I don’t need anything for Luz… but I do need something from you,” she said.
“Oh?” Eda leaned over the counter and peered at her over the tops of her sunglasses.
“I'm… doing something to surprise Luz and I was wondering if you could tell me what some of her favorite foods are, she’s told me you cook for her.“
“Well, I cook, yeah, but other than pancakes, the kid’s not big on most of my meals… not that I blame her.” She shrugged.
Amity frowned at that, Eda was really her only hope for this information. Gus and Willow hadn’t known much about it and while she and Luz talked all the time about all kinds of things, it was natural that some things just hadn’t come up yet.
“There is some food I’ve heard her talk about that she loves, something her mom made for her… what was it?” Eda tapped her chin thoughtfully.
“I believe she called it ‘tostones’.” Another voice called and they both turned to see Lilith, as she came out of the back of the stand holding a box of human junk.
“That’s right!” Eda snapped her fingers.
Amity frowned at the sight of the former coven leader.
She and Luz had talked about Lilith only once. Luz didn’t like that she was still holding a grudge over the things that had happened with the elder Clawtorne sister, but she respected Amity’s right to her feelings and didn’t bring it up, only mentioning her former mentor in passing.
Luz was just too forgiving sometimes, in Amity’s opinion. Though she guessed if she wasn’t they wouldn’t be where they were today, so she would be cordial at the owl house when she was there, for Luz; but that didn’t mean she had to like Lilith.
Lilith noticed the less than friendly look she was getting from the teen and averted her eyes. She was lucky Luz was so quick to let things go, but she knew the same could not be said for most people, and really, she deserved it. Eda smirked at her sister’s demeanor in front of her former protégé.
“What are ‘tostones’?” The foreign word felt strange on her tongue as she looked back to Eda who shrugged.
“Some kind of fried fruit?” She turned to her sister who nodded.
“She said it was a fruit in the human world. A ‘plantain’. You slice them into disks, fry them, smash them flat, then fry them again and sprinkle them with salt."
"Oh yeah… kid was practically drooling.” Eda smirked, rolling her eyes
“We probably don’t have that fruit here…” Amity frowned.
“No, but I’ve given her Gorgon fruit before and she said it was really similar, you could probably make it with those,” Eda suggested.
“Gorgon fruit, huh?” she hummed.
Amity was familiar with them. While you could eat them, most people didn’t because of their bland flavor and starchy texture. But she was damned if she wasn’t going to try.
“I can get Gorgon fruit…,” she trailed off thoughtfully.
“Amity!?"
Amity jumped, looking up in time to see her girlfriend come barreling toward her at full speed from across the market.
She pounced on her, wrapping her arms around the witch’s neck and grinning.
"Hi, Luz.” Amity smiled, wrapping her arms around Luz if no other reason then to keep from being barreled over as she was tackled at full speed.
The sisters smirked, glancing at each other as they watched the two teenagers.
“What are you doing here, I thought you had something to do after school?” she asked after stepping back to look at her.
“Oh, yes, I…,” she trailed off. She hadn’t thought Luz would be at the market today and had not prepared an excuse in case she ran into her. Her eyes flickered across Luz’s patiently waiting face, mind racing for something to say.
“She came to speak to me."
They both turned to Lilith in surprise.
"You did?” Luz blinked, turning her gaze back on Amity, who quickly schooled her features so as not to look as surprised as Luz.
“Yessss…,” she said slowly, trying not to sound equally bewildered.
Then a bright smile broke out on Luz’s face and she nudged her gently.
“I’m proud of you,” she said quietly.
Amity hummed, frowning. She felt a little guilty at Luz’s praise, because she certainly was not here to talk to Lilith.
“Come along then, Amity,” Lilith called as she walked out from behind the stand.
“Bye, Luz” she quickly pressed a kiss to her cheek before hurrying away to follow Lilith.
“See you tomorrow, Cariño~,“ she sang, waving. Eda rolled her eyes at the entire affair, but was grinning.
Amity followed Lilith silently until they were out of sight of Eda’s stand.
"I’m still mad at you…,” Amity grumbled.
“I know, and you have every right to be. Few people are as forgiving as Luz…” The former coven leader frowned.
They walked along quietly till they stopped in front of a stand selling fruits and vegetables.
Lilith eyed their wares before spotting a large bunch of Gorgon fruit, their pale violet skin sticking out among the other fruits. She dug through one of her pockets and handed over the appropriate amount of snails before picking them up and handing them to Amity, who blinked down at the fruit in her hands before looking back up at Lilith.
“I… hope someday, to actually earn Eda and Luz’s forgiveness for what I’ve done to them, and yours for what I did to you,” she said solemnly before turning and walking back to Eda’s stand without another word.
Amity watched as the elder Clawthorne sister disappeared in the crowded market.
She looked at the fruit in hand before turning and hurrying home.
~ ~
That night she stood in the kitchen a little frazzled. She had no idea if she was doing this right since she didn’t know what it was supposed to look or taste like.
She carefully moved the popping and sizzling disks around in the oil as they cooked. While the skin of the fruit was a pale violet the flesh itself was white and turned golden brown as it cooked, filling the house with a delightful smell.
Luckily for her both her parents were gone for the entire week, leaving the Blight children to their own devices, so she didn’t have to worry about any questions about what she was making or where she would be after school or Saturday evening.
On the other hand she still had to worry about…
“Whatcha’ cookin, Mittens?"
"Smells good."
The twins popped up over her shoulders, making her jump.
She scowled, glancing at them over her shoulder.
It was easier to just answer their questions and they often went on their merry way after they had their fill of harassing her.
“It’s called ‘tostones’ it’s one of Luz’s favorite foods from the human realm, I’m trying to recreate it for her.” She moved some of the disks out of the oil to a paper towl sitting on the counter and she quickly sprinkled them with salt.
“Aw, that’s sweet…” Emira cooed, pinching one of Amity’s cheeks only to have her hand swatted away with the spatula and a growl.
“Oh, let us try!” Edric grabbed one of the disks, Amity didn’t try to stop him as he popped it into his mouth.
“Hot, Hot!” He smacked his mouth trying to bounce searing hot food off his tongue but didn’t take it out of his mouth. The sisters watched and shared a glance, the same deadpan expression on both their faces.
“So hot…,” Ed whimpered, fanning his tongue with his hands while still chewing.
“Ed…” Emira shook her head with a sigh and Amity rolled her eyes. What she was planning wasn’t till Saturday, this was just a test batch and she would have offered her siblings some; after they had cooled.
“So good, but so hot…” Ed stuck out his now burnt tongue with a whine.
“Are they?” Amity turned to her first completed batch and picked one up, carefully blowing on it before popping it in her mouth.
The salt and fat melted on her tongue and the pleasant crunch followed by the soft mashed fruit inside made her hum; they were good.
Em followed her example, carefully cooling it before taking a bite.
“Oh, these are good, Mittens!” the older girl praised before popping the rest in her mouth.
“I hope it’s close enough to what her mom makes.” She chewed her lip worriedly. Even if they were good, the point was to try and give Luz one of her favorite foods, something that she’d lost with the portal’s destruction.
Edric and Emira shared a knowing look.
“I’m sure she’s gonna love it, sis.” Edric set a hand on her shoulder.
“Yeah, even if it’s not the exact same, Luz will appreciate the effort.” Emira squeezed her other shoulder.
“Thanks…” Amity smiled, then caught sight of her brother reaching for another steaming hot tostone and slapped his hand.
“Ed!” Emira huffed.
“What? They’re good!” he whined.
“Just wait for them to cool off!” Amity scolded.
~ ~ ~
By Friday Amity had decided she had perfected her Boiling Isles version of tostones as much as she was able, having never seen or tasted them herself. As well as having gathered together a few other foods and things needed for what she had planned for Saturday.
She could tell that Luz was curious about what she was planning as they sat in what had become ‘their’ secret room, Luz leaning her head on Amity’s shoulder and peering up at her with large puppy eyes while she flipped through one of her text books.
“Just a hint?” she asked, making Amity roll her eyes fondly.
“No,” she said for the third time that afternoon, flipping a page in her book.
“I hate surprises…,” Luz mumbled, crossing her arms but not removing her head from Amity’s shoulder.
“You love surprises, you just hate waiting for them.” Amity looked at her fondly, but exasperated.
“Well, can’t argue with that…,” Luz hummed. “Should I bring or wear anything special?” she asked.
“Just yourself, however you want to come.” She smiled. “Don’t eat dinner,” she tacked on. It would ruin all her work for Luz to eat beforehand.
“Even if I want to wear the otter costume?” Luz snickered, peeking up as Amity’s smile fell.
“If… you want…,” she said slowly. “But please don’t…,” she muttered under her breath, making Luz burst in giggles.
“I won’t, Cariño.” she promised, nudging Amity’s cheek with the top of her head and closing her eyes.
Amity paused, thinking.
“Luz?”
“Hmm?”
“What does ‘Cariño’ mean?” she finally asked.
“Hm? Oh it means…” she paused, a sly look sliding into her face. “Tell me about Saturday and I’ll tell you what Cariño means,” she said and Amity pursed her lips, glaring down at Luz, who was looking up at her, grinning like the griffin that ate the pixie.
“I don’t wanna know then,” she huffed, turning her head.
“Aw, c'mon Amity!” Luz just laughed at her girlfriend’s puffed up cheeks.
They continued to poke and prod each other till Amity had to leave, with the promise of picking Luz up tomorrow night.
~ ~
Amity made her way toward the owl house with nervous excitement, the sun having just dipped below the horizon and the last rays of bright orange light were vanishing from the sky leaving the last bits of pale blue to soon give away to the deep blues and blacks of night.
Willow had just sent her a message on her scroll that she and Gus had finished their parts and were headed home.
She quickly typed back a reply, thanking them both for their help as she walked down the darkening path towards Luz’s house.
She’d spent far too long digging through her closet when she had told Luz to just wear whatever she wanted. Her sister had come in at one point to help her sort through her wardrobe. She’d settled on a dark green plaid skirt and a long sleeved black shirt, her brooch pinned to it.
She smiled as she adjusted it. She’d wear it everyday if she could.
The owl house came into view and Amity picked up the pace, hurrying to the front door.
“Hi, Amity! Hoot hoot!”
Before she had to interact with the bird-tube the door flung open cutting off anything else Hooty might have said and Luz appeared, smiling brightly.
She had obviously been waiting for her.
“Hey, Amity.” she stepped out of the doorway. “You look really nice.”
Heat bloomed across Amity’s face. She was never going to get used to Luz’s complements.
“Thanks, so do you.” she glanced over her girlfriend, who grinned, and she did, in what she’d heard Luz call ‘jeans’ and a short sleeve blue and white striped shirt.
“I really wanted to wear the otter suit…,” she drawled, looking smug. “…but I figured since we’re doing something different I’d try to spice it up a little for you.”
Amity rolled her eyes but smiled.
“I like it.” It was Luz’s turn to blush. “Are you ready to go?”
“Yup! See you later, Eda!” She shouted back into the house with Eda shouting back at them to be safe and then Luz stepped all the way out, closing the door behind her and reaching out to grab Amity’s hand, lacing their fingers together.
“Hoot, bye, Luz!” Hooty called.
“So are you finally going to tell me where we’re going?” Luz asked after a few minutes of walking through the slowly darkening woods.
“No, I’m going to show you.” She smiled, glancing at the human out of the corner of her eye.
“Mysterious…” Luz smiled back.
When they were nearly there Amity dug her free hand into her pocket and came back with a bandana. “Put this on?” she asked.
Luz blinked at the bandana for a second before letting go of Amity’s hand just long enough to tie the bandana around her eyes. She groped around for Amity’s hand again, making the witch smile as she took it and led her the rest of the way.
“Are we there yet?” Luz asked when they stopped and Amity steeled herself, nodding but Luz couldn’t see it of course.
“Yes”
Luz wasted no time whipping off her bandana and the moment her eyes blinked open she gasped.
They were standing on the cliffside, in front of a large pink, leafed tree.
Their grom tree.
The air around the tree was filled with floating balls of light that lit the area and slowly shifted from one color to the next. Their light reflected off the tree’s leaves, casting everything in a shadow of pale pink as the last vestiges of light disappeared behind the ocean on the horizon.
Sitting at the base of the tree was a checkered blanket laid out over the grass and what Luz could only guess to be the Boiling Isles version of a picnic basket.
Amity dug the toe of her shoe into the dirt, waiting anxiously for Luz to speak, but she couldn’t stay silent any longer.
“W-what do you think?” she asked, jerking Luz out of her stupor. She turned to Amity and blinked, mouth opening but no words coming out as so many rushed to the tip of her tongue at once.  She swallowed, trying to force a clam over herself long enough to speak but the hot feeling in her chest was overwhelming as she looked at her girlfriend in the low glowing lights as they floated around their heads.
“It’s amazing,” she finally managed to get out past dry lips.
“Really?” Amity asked and Luz was reminded of the last time they had been here and she had asked her that, with the same hopeful lilt, after Luz had said she would go to Grom with her. She laughed at herself, if she had known then what she knew now…
“Yeah, everything is beautiful,” she spoke quietly, as though raising her voice would shatter the moment. Luz grabbed both Amity’s hands and held them firmly in her own. Amity’s face was hot, but she was getting used to that just being how it was going to be when they were together.
“Gus and Willow helped…and I haven’t even shown you everything yet…” She tugged Luz over to the blanket and sat carefully while Luz plopped down beside her. “I wanted to try to make something you liked, but we don’t have the exact thing here on the Isles but I tried to make it as close as possible based on description,” she trailed off nervously. Luz looked at her with unabashed curiosity.
Luckily with a little magic they were still quite hot when she pulled the food out of the basket and held it up for Luz to inspect.
Brown eyes shot open wide as she looked at her girlfriend’s offering.
“Are those…,” she trailed off, hardly believing her eyes. It couldn’t be.
“We don’t have ‘plantains’ but I hope this version of tostones is close.” Amity held a hand out at the plate, motioning for Luz to try one.
With trembling fingers she picked one up and it was warm between her fingertips. She took a bite and immediately wanted to cry.
It was so, so good.
The flavor and texture was barely indistinguishable from her mom’s.
She looked back up at Amity, who had her hands fisted into her skirt, waiting on bated breath.
“It’s so good…” her voice trembled as she shoved the rest of it into her mouth, savoring every bite.
Amity’s tense shoulders pulled away from her ears and she smiled at Luz’s palpable joy, even though her eyes were a little glassy like she might cry at any moment.
“I’m glad,” she said, drawing Luz’s attention back to her.
That small, pleased smile lit up her whole face as the floating lights made her gold eyes shimmer.
“You…” Luz started, throwing out her hands and gesturing to everything. “Your…” she just couldn’t manage to get out the right words, she wasn’t even sure what the right words were. Everything was so beautiful and perfect and Luz didn’t think there were any words that could express that; she was overwhelmed.
Where her mouth often failed her, her actions wouldn’t.
Luz shot forward, wrapping Amity in a tight hug and burying her face in her neck, making Amity squeak with surprise as Luz squeezed her, trying to convey everything she felt.
Amity hugged her back, smiling so hard it hurt but she couldn’t stop it even if she wanted to.
After a long minute Amity finally pulled away.
“They’re going to get cold.” She grinned, and Luz needed no further prompting before shoveling some more into her mouth while she pulled the sandwiches she made out of the box and started to eat one, happy to let Luz have all of the tostones.
When all the food was gone Luz laid flat on her back on the blanket, more content then she could ever remember being.
Her stomach wasn’t the only thing that felt full though. She turned her head to gaze up at Amity as she sipped apple blood out of a small juice box, her heart felt fit to burst.
Why had it taken her so long to see how amazing the girl in front of her was?
Amity glanced at her and saw her staring and her cheeks turned that lovely shade of pink they always did when she caught her off guard; making her grin.
If she had only been less dense at Grom…
The sudden thought made Luz sit up.
“I have an idea!” She grinned, jumping up and dug her phone out of her pocket. She quickly scrolled through her playlist before hitting play on a song, and the soft sounds of a tinkling piano filled the air around them. She sat it on the roots and turned to Amity, holding out a hand.
“I know we technically danced at Grom, but maybe we could have a do over? Without the giant terror demon, and not as friends?” she asked.
Amity blinked at the outstretched hand a moment before a soft smile broke out on her face and she slid her hand into Luz’s.
“I’d like that.”
Luz pulled her up and wrapped an arm around her waist, threading her fingers between Amity’s as the witch’s spare hand wrapped around her, her head laying on her shoulder.
They swayed in slow rhythm with the music, eyes closed, simply enjoying the moment.
Luz idly wondered if witches had a higher body temperature than humans, because Amity was always warm to the touch.
After several more songs had come and gone, she spoke.
"This was amazing… you shouldn’t have gone through so much trouble though…it’s just a month anniversary…”
“I wanted to. I wanted to do something for you…,“ Amity hummed, turning her head to bury her face in Luz’s neck. She always smelled like the forest in summer, warm and pleasantly earthy.
“I feel bad I didn’t do anything for you,” she mumbled into mint hair. She still wasn’t sure if it was perfume or shampoo that gave Amity her sweet, flowery scent, but it never failed to put Luz at ease.
“Don’t, I’m just happy to be here with you.” Was the quiet reply and again Luz felt her chest surge to the brim with emotion desperately looking for an escape, and it finally found it.
“I love you."
The words came out of her mouth before she even realized she was saying them.
They both froze, Amity jerking back to look at her and both their faces were nearly glowing red as they looked at each other equally surprised, and immediately Luz began to stammer.
"I didn’t mean that! I- I mean, I did, but I didn’t mean to say it out loud!” She fumbled over her words as Amity continued to stare at her in absolute shock.
“What?” The witch managed to squeak, barely a whisper, and if possible, Luz turned even redder, her palms suddenly sweaty and surely Amity noticed that!
‘I… I didn't… I mean, it’s probably way too soon to be saying that, right!?“ Her voice pitched, much louder than necessary since they were still standing pressed against each other, faces only a few inches apart. She decided it was best for once to just shut up.
It felt like an eternity as gold eyes searched her bright red face.
Slowly, Amity began to shake her head.
"Maybe…,” she finally said, voice low and eyes never leaving Luz’s. “But, I love you too."
Luz’s grip on her hand tightened as she stared back.
"Yeah?”
“Yeah"
Luz swallowed thickly, suddenly quite aware of the fact that she hadn’t kissed Amity, really kissed her, since the masquerade.
She gently pulled her fingers free from Amity’s to cup one of the witch’s red cheeks.
Amity leaned into the touch, heart suddenly thundering in her chest and then Luz's lips were slotted across hers with a gentle pressure Amity was quick to return.
Neither pulled away till their lungs burned with a need for air, releasing each other with a quiet ‘pop’ and panting and before either had recovered Luz was kissing her again and Amity’s fingers were digging into her shirt, a small noise rising unbidden in her throat making Luz kiss her that much harder, the arm still wrapped around her waist tightened, pulling her in as close as physics would allow.
This kiss was so much more than the tentative ones they had shared in Amity’s room after the dance. It was charged and it made Amity’s knees weak.
She wouldn’t be able to stand, surely, if not for Luz holding her so tightly.
When they finally pulled apart neither said anything for a long time, staring at each other and trying to get their breathing back under control.
"Sweetie” Luz finally said, and before Amity could even think to ask what she meant, Luz went on. “Cariño, it means ‘sweetie’,” she explained.
“Oh,” Amity mumbled, face still flushed as she panted.
Luz resisted the urge to kiss her again. Amity looked ready to pass out and she herself felt boneless.
“But maybe… I should be calling you ‘mi amor’ instead…,” she mumbled, watching the lights reflecting in the golden depths of Amity’s eyes.
“What does that mean?” Amity whispered, her already white-knuckled grip on Luz tightening.
“My love."

A Fate Like This
It hadn’t taken long for the demon to be attracted to her emotions. Strong and dark, a true feast. In the early morning hours, they had slipped into her room, taken Luz’s form, with pointy witch ears, but it had been enough to fool Amity. It wasn’t like she had protested much, though. --- When their relationship hits an abrupt stop, Amity gives in to the dark side. It's just too unfair how tempting it can be.
Yeah, I literally just wanted to write a little Creepy!Luz and Villain!Amity. Kinda inspired by the "Say My Name" animatic on YouTube, by HiroyukiAnimation YT, I just really liked Amity's dynamic with turning evil and imagined Luz getting desperate about her girlfriend to pair them. So, I just decided to chuck out this Oneshot xD Enjoy!
Ao3 / FF.net
---
A sense of confidence immediately filled her.
Amity brushed through her hair and loosened her ponytail before the hairband fell to the floor. Her messy bangs fell into her face.
Maybe she shouldn’t have made a deal with the demon. After all, her parents had warned her about people wanting to profit off her position and wealth.
But their arguments had just been too alluring. They had promised her the confidence to stand up to them, to her bully friends, and to protect Luz. They had said she would finally step out of herself. Reach the potential she was meant to have.
The twins had always belittled her about their skills. How they had excelled at everything before her, better and faster and more impressive than her.
Her parents had always called her the black sheep of the family, behind her back, but she had heard the staff whisper. That she had been an accident, that the twins had been born lucky while she had been lucky that she was born.
She knew all the talk. That she had to study a lot just to be good at school. Her private tutoring to excel. That she was dumb and not worthy to be called a Blight.
It had all just gotten worse when Luz had arrived. Well at first, she had only embarrassed her, but then she had fallen in love with the human, the degenerate wannabe witch and somehow, the elite circles around her had found out.
The twins had looked cool for flirting with Luz, all the while keeping out of reach, but when Amity had started flailing around the human, and blushing, and spending time with her, she had only been downgraded more like a witch, as a person and as one of the Blight heirs.
Fallen in love with a human, such a klutz, too.
She heard that it had to be expected that she wouldn’t keep her head leveled, that she would fall in love like a fool and not keep her emotions at bay. That it served her right to be called a disappointment to her esteemed family.
It had started projecting onto Luz as well. She had been followed, threatened, and even beaten up, without ever being told a reason. Amity knew it was to put a dent into her facade. She was bad news and had tried telling Luz that, but the girl had ignored that and continued to be with Amity.
Even when she had patched Luz up in a dark classroom, softly dabbed the blood from her upper lip, and cried at how badly a beating Luz had taken. Luz wouldn’t back down and Amity knew immediately, that she would be too weak to be with her as well, just like with Willow.
That she would push her away to have her stop hurting. That she would give in to the bullies and the bad voice in her head. That she would give up on Luz just like she did on Willow.
Luz hadn’t let her.
That stupid, stupid human had just kissed her out of nowhere, in that dark classroom while outside, it had been pouring and thundering. Disregarded all the bruises she had received from the bullies and the cuts she had gotten from running away from them. She had just kissed her.
Amity had tried pushing her away but Luz hadn’t let her, instead chased her lips again and at that moment, she had been too weak to resist.
Too weak again.
Tears had flown down her cheeks and Luz had flinched back, asked if it had been her fault when she had felt the salty taste on her lips. Titan, she was so sweet and naïve.
Amity had pulled her back in and desperately pressed their lips together as if Luz had been her oxygen. Outside, it had been thundering, storming, the boiling rain hitting the protective shield around the school, and they had been alone in the classroom while Amity had gotten above Luz, pushed her to sit on her lap and hold onto her, hold so tightly because she had thought she’d lose her again.
For a while, it had gone well.
They had managed to keep their relationship a secret, only getting intimate when they were sure they could not be caught. It had caused them to long for each other, to go deeper each time, to crash their lips together whenever they got the chance.
Amity hadn’t ever anticipated such a fire burning inside Luz, especially with the secrecy surrounding them, but she had explained to her that she never would’ve expected a romantic relationship for herself and had longed for one ever since she had hit puberty.
Even when Luz got beaten up again, they stayed together. Amity patching her up, them assuring each other that they wouldn’t stop, just because some guys had it out for Luz. But Amity knew the truth. They were after her. Hurting her. Showing her that what she was doing was wrong.
Luz hadn’t wanted to hear a word. Every time Amity had tried explaining, Luz had just shut her up and let her hands wander under Amity’s shirt, successfully rendering her a mess. After a few times, the Latina had quickly perfected her technique, learning to be able to take Amity out of commission within a few seconds.
She didn’t exactly know how Luz did it, nor did she care. All she cared about was that Luz was strong enough to be with her.
Until their enemies had gotten stronger.
A picture of them kissing had leaked. The whole school had known within minutes. The whole of Bonesborough within an hour. Her parents had been at school almost immediately, to pick her up. The media had plucked the story apart and the picture had been posted all over social media by the evening.
Not that Amity would’ve gotten the chance to explain herself. Her parents had just locked her into her room, for further notice. And once again, Amity had gotten weak.
To play along, not to fall out of line, to go back into the shadow of her siblings, and to continue to attempt lying to herself, that she was the top student, the most skilled witch and worthy.
When Luz’s light glyph had hovered up to her window, she had been too weak to open it. Even when her twins had knocked on her door and begged her to go to Luz, to be strong enough to rebel, she hadn’t managed to. She was too weak, too caught up in herself, too scared.
Luz had been chased off the property again, and Amity’s heart had broken at her begging, screaming for her.
She had been too weak.
The Luz-shaped demon had brushed up to her, voice thick and sweet like honey. They had sympathized with Amity, had whined how unfair it was for her to be born into such a cruel family, such a hopeless situation, and had offered her a deal. Amity had tried to block the demon, locking them out, but her emotions had been too delicious for the demon to ignore.
They had promised things to her.
The necessary confidence to stand up to her parents.
The amazing skills she had trained so hard for but only been able to use a speck of what she had dreamed of.
The power she had sought to have.
The power to herself from ill talking, from her status and her family.
The demon had changed their face, Luz’s face, added bruises and blood. Had tempted her, talked sweet, had promised her that she would never have to see Luz like this again.
She had been weak again.
Too weak to withstand the pressure.
Had shook hands with the demon.
Her back cracked when Amity straightened up, then she grinned. Her eyes changed color, got dyed darker. Until they were redder, darker, less like gold, and more like fire.
Suddenly, she stood taller. Her shoulders weren’t pulled up in self-doubt or hanging like she didn’t care. She kept them squared, asserting her newly established confidence. A grin played around her lips when the demon slipped into her mind and pushed away any doubts. All her emotions were gone in an instant. The demon had sucked them up like a festive meal and only left their control. Amity felt as confident as she had never before.
The smirk that had played around her lips before now turned into a smug grin.
She would no longer let her parents tell her what to do. She was of age and they would not force her to do their bidding anymore.
Her siblings could suck it. She felt the powerful magic surging through her body, enhanced by the demon who feasted on her emotions, and felt that she could do things they would not ever have dreamed of.
And she would teach everyone at school a lesson for beating Luz up.
As for Luz herself, she was better than that. She was a Blight. She only associated with a selected few, and she would not let herself be slowed down.
Rolling up her sleeves, Amity brushed through her hair and mustered herself in the mirror. Suddenly, she showed a whole other self of her and she began to like it. A more confident self, who wouldn’t let others walk around on her anymore. This was going to be fun.
 ---
It began with Amity walking out of her room despite being grounded. She had blasted the door out of its hinges and continued down the hall as if nothing had happened.
She wouldn’t care if her parents would tell her to go back into her room. The world was hers now. She wouldn’t let them torment her any further.
The twins busted out of their own doors, attracted by the explosion, ready to fight, but merely stopped at their little sister sauntering past them, leaving a smoking door behind her. They looked at each other and ran to the railing of the manor’s big staircase, watching Amity descend and march towards the door. Their parents closed the entrance off by standing in front of it and told her to go back upstairs, her ban hadn’t been lifted yet.
But the witch didn’t care. She grinned at them and snapped her fingers to encircle them in fire, so hot and high that their hair started getting singed.
“You can’t tell me what to do. Get out of my way or I burn you alive.”
The twins ran down the stairs, already readying water spells, but Amity merely snapped her fingers again, making the stairs tremble beneath their feet and finally collapse, to trap their feet and then wrap them into the carpet that had formerly covered the stairs.
Horrified at their daughter’s sudden change of behavior, Odalia and Alador Blight stepped away through the little way Amity had granted them in their ring of fire, followed by the flames when their daughter walked past them.
With a slam, the big entrance door opened and Amity walked through, releasing the spells with a wave of her hand. Coughing and spluttering, the twins fell to the stairs and heaved, and the Blight parents just stared at each other when the fire was distinguished.
Amity, on the other hand, never felt better. She wore the smirk on her lips confidently when she sauntered through Bonesborough while heads turned after her. Whispers emerged.
But she wouldn’t pay them any mind. They were not worthy to get a place within her head.
Soon, the people of Bonesborough changed their chatter to something more sinister, talking about her affair with the human, especially some colleagues of her parents, and she made short process of them. One who raised his voice too loud she simply engulfed in flames. It was just for a moment, enough to burn his skin and let everyone see, all the while never even stopping to walk.
From that second, the crowds parted for her and she didn’t even spare them a second glance. They were right to treat her like a queen and she wouldn’t accept anything less.
Arriving in school was no less amusing.
Word hadn’t spread yet that she had set a person on fire, but she was sure they’d see it soon enough. Smirking to herself, she held her chin high and walked past all of them. They gossiped and whispered among themselves, that she had been pulled from school the day before, for what had happened.
But Amity didn’t care. She would prove them today. She would never let them think less of her anymore. She was powerful and she was scary. They would learn to fear her.
Grinning and ignoring all of them, she sauntered past, her appearance entirely changed not by her outfit, but by her posture, by her aura.
Rounding a corner, she finally found the goal of her search. Luz was standing with Willow and Gus, holding her books close. Apparently, she had taken the day before quite hard, if the bags under her eyes were any indication for that. But Amity didn’t care. She’d show her what she really meant to her.
Luz noticed her first of the group and immediately dropped her books to approach her, not sensing the danger cursing through the hallway the closer Amity got.
“Amity, I was so worried, I thought-”, she began, but the witch merely lowered her head while lifting her shoulders and walking faster, never letting her eyes leave the human. As if she was getting ready to pounce on her prey, her fingers parting like claws.
Willow noticed first that something was going on with her, but her warning cry didn’t reach Luz in time.
In a second’s notice, Amity had roughly grabbed Luz’s jaw and pulled her into turning, before pushing her legs out from under her body and letting go, having Luz crash into the ground. Amity stood tall while eyeing Willow, enjoying her face changing to a shocked one.
Then she looked down to her former lover, chuckling while a ring of students gathered around them. Conjuring up an abomination hand from the ground, she lifted the human up to her, but never let her hover higher than Amity’s eyes. She stood over her. The hand wrapped around Luz’s body and she heard a satisfying crack. She hadn’t broken anything, but the grip was so tight, Luz was struggling to breathe.
“Come close to me one more time and I’ll make sure you don’t stand up again, got it, cutie?”, she sang but Luz’s face showed nothing but confusion. That disappointed Amity a little, after all, she wanted her to cower in fear. But Luz had never been the fearful kind.
“A-Amity-… What happened to you?”, she asked, pleading, and Amity brushed through her hair, chuckling at the stupid question.
“I grew a spine. Quit being stupid or I’ll break yours with ease.”, the grip around Luz tightened threateningly and she gulped.
“Amity…”
The witch leaned down to her with an insane grin, then she buried a hand in her hair and clenched a fist, making Luz yelp, before roughly pressing her lips on hers, before straightening up again and pushing her head back.
“What, don’t like it anymore? That’s just a shame.”, with a wave, the abominations hand dropped and Luz coughed, trying to get up, before Amity stepped closer and already lifted her hand, conjuring up a fireball, before Willow stepped in and stopped her with a vine, catching her wrist.
“What the hell happened to you, Amity?!”, she yelled, before kneeling to help Luz. The human accepted the helping hand and got back up to her feet while Amity easily let the vine disintegrate, before mustering her fingernails. “I woke up from a deep slumber. A deep slumber that lasted all my life.”, she explained and Willow squinted her eyes at her, before suddenly, a hesitation went through the students around them, before they stumbled back, staring at their phones. Smirking, Amity supposed they had found her fiery morning action.
One broke from the line.
“Yo, she’s crazy!”, he shouted and ran down the hall. Amity let him. That’d be fun.
By then, word had spread and voices got louder, while Luz kept staring at her. She was so confused and admittedly, a little scared. What had happened to Amity in the twelve hours that she hadn’t seen her?
Even Boscha seemed to hesitate at the power radiating from Amity, Luz noticed, her keeping away from her friend by a few meters, but Amity had finally spotted her.
“Ah, there you are.”, she growled and Boscha sank into herself, stepping back.
“W-What?!”, she tried but Amity just snapped her fingers and caused Boscha’s legs to be frozen to the floor while she approached her.
“You’re one of the many reasons I finally snapped. I wanna thank you!”, unsure, Boscha looked back to Willow and Luz somehow hoping they would help but they were just as clueless as her.
“What are you talking about?! You’re crazy.”, Boscha exclaimed while Amity grinned at her, before cupping her cheek. She did not like where this was going.
“Maybe I am crazy.”, Amity sang in an alluring voice, then she smiled at Boscha, “Hm… I will catch you later. But never forget that you were the one to lick my boots before turning on me, hm?”
She patted her cheek, then she turned and waved her hands, freeing Boscha’s boots before waving again. Suddenly, an abomination grabbed Boscha and threw her against the lockers, leaving her crumpled body on the floor and sinking back into the ground where it came from.
Shocked silence filled the hallway while Amity sauntered away, cackling to herself.
 ---
For the rest of the day, nobody dared to speak to Amity again. They didn’t exactly know why she was that way, but Willow had figured he had finally snapped under the pressure of her parents.
Over the day, the bruises she had given Luz started appearing in blue and purple colors on her jaw, just from gripping her.
Luz didn’t know how Amity had gotten that strong, but when she had looked into her eyes, she had immediately known something was wrong.
This wasn’t Amity.
Something must’ve happened, over the night, something else than her snapping.
Luz softly rubbed her shoulder, where she felt another bruise forming. Something had massively gone wrong. Something that had given Amity unimaginable power and confidence.
Luz doubted that had come from the witch herself, because as much as she loved her, Amity was unsure and always let her own head block her potential.
Cowering behind a corner, she saw Amity confronting some guys who had beaten Luz up a few days back. She caught them in vines and pulled their face close to her, before caving it in with an abomination fist. The students around her flinched back while the second bully tried freeing himself from ice pillars, but Amity was faster. She kicked his middle, then she conjured another abomination and beat him unconscious, before leaving.
Luz held a hand over her lips while Amity came her way and thankfully walked past her, seemingly not noticing her hiding behind a doorway.
She hadn’t once used a circle to do magic. Her magic came from somewhere else. Amity had done the movement, sure, but there had been no conjuring up with a circle. Luz had seen it.
Suddenly, the witch stopped and her ears twitched. Biting her tongue, Luz pressed herself tighter into the doorframe, but it was of no use. Amity stood next to her faster than she could scream. Pushing the human into the door, Luz recognized the classroom they had first kissed in.
“Amity, wh-whatever you wanna do-”, she began, but the witch merely drew her fist back, engulfed it with abomination goo, and punched. The rock-hard, enlarged fist connected with her chest and robbed her of all air. Luz felt her body flying through the air before hitting the blackboard at the front of the room, then she dazedly fell to the floor.
“You’re the human.”, Amity snarled, and Luz immediately felt reassured that Amity wasn’t herself at the moment, “You’re the degenerate who tricked me into thinking she was more than she was worth.”
Luz softly shook her head, then she conjured some vines to dodge Amity’s fist, breaking the abomination. Amity summoned a fireball and Luz finally got to her feet enough to roll out of the way before bringing an ice pillar between her and the witch, feeling the heat of the fire blasting around her shield and melting the ice.
“A-Amity, please-…”
But the witch wouldn’t listen.
Instead, she let an abomination rise up in front of Luz and throw a punch at her, but the human rolled out of the way just in time. Her ice pillar exploded in a thousand pieces when the abomination sunk into itself, only to resurface behind Luz and grab her.
Amity let it throw Luz across the room and a satisfied grin grew on her face when she crashed into some tables, breaking them. The human slapped a plant glyph on the ground and let some vines wrap around Amity’s feet, but she was faster.
With ease, the witchling burned the vines, before conjuring up a fireball to throw after Luz who jumped out of the way and hid beneath a table. A light glyph emerged from there, so big that Amity had to turn away, then he felt some hands grabbing her but she was too strong for Luz. The human was thrown past her when she turned, her hands losing the grip on Amity’s clothes, and crashed against the blackboard. Immediately, Amity followed suit and tried throwing a punch at her, but Luz ducked and the blackboard broke at the force of her fist connecting with it.
Groaning, mity held her hand, then she turned after the human who conjured some ice spikes to keep her on distance, but Amity merely drew another circle and et an abomination rise between them. The creature turned off its head and threw it after Luz who ducked again, the tables and chairs behind her getting crushed in the force.
“Amity, please! Stop!”
The witchling just grinned, another fireball appearing in her hand. “Not interested.”, she hissed, then she threw it after Luz and hit her back when she tried running, making her scream in pain. The human fall to the floor and could only just so roll out of the way when the headless abomination tried stepping on her head.
With quite some effort, Luz got back up again, creating a fireball herself to hit the abomination and make it disappear, before using another plant glyph to try and trap Amity, grabbing her wrists with the branches of a small but sturdy tree, but Amity merely broke free with demonic strength, taking a quick step and grabbing Luz’s hair to throw her to the ground and land a punch in her face. Screaming, Luz broke free and kicked Amity away, conjuring up an ice pillar to stand on so the witchling couldn’t get to her, before searching for another fire glyph. A kick from Amity let her ice pillar crack and she quickly jumped before Amity kicked it again, successfully letting it fall into itself while Luz rolled off the ground and came back up to her feet.
Growling, the girl turned back to her.
“Amity, you have to stop, please!”, Luz cried, but Amity just growled louder, screaming as she drew a big circle and conjured up spikes to trap Luz. She could just so escape them by protecting herself with a wall of vines, then she jumped out on top before Amity could reach her, letting another fireball appear in her hand to stop Amity’s steps as she threw it in front of the witchling, running to the other side. She grabbed after her and caught her uniform, pulling her close and making her stumble, then Luz just so dodged another fireball and freed her shirt from Amity’s grip, kicking against her legs to make her fall.
An abomination suddenly grabbed her from behind and Luz screamed again, feeling herself getting thrown. Thinking fast, she threw a glyph to make an ice slide, coming to her feet somewhat unscathed, before Amity lunged at her and punched her stomach, making the human sink to her knees, completely exhausted and glyph-less. Most of the room was trashed by now and she had nothing else to give She could only hope Amity would get close enough for one last resort.
She groaned when Amity lifted her up with an abomination hand, before using some vines to grab her face, thorns digging into Luz’s skin.
“You’re the dirt beneath my feet.”, Amity hissed and slapped her, before turning away, leaving Luz helpless in her prison.
“Amity, please, just listen to me for a second, please.”, she begged but the witch just cackled, “What happened to you?!”
“What happened to me?”, she asked and turned with a manic grin, “I got some welcome help. I got more powerful than my parents ever planned for me, more powerful than the twins could imagine. I’m the Blight I was meant to be now.”
Luz grimaced at the pain before Amity snapped and left the vines and abomination to disappear, allowing Luz to breathe again.
“It’s not you.”, Luz then stated, just getting to her knees again, brushing some blood off her lips with the back of her hand, growling. At that, Amity flinched, “This isn’t the Amity I know.”
The witch looked back to her and smirked, kneeling as well to grab Luz’s jaw once more.
“The Amity you knew was weak, Luz. I’ve replaced her now.”, she brushed over the corner of her mouth with her thumb, wiping away some blood, “And now, everything will be perfect for me.”
Luz wouldn’t accept this. Something bad had happened and she had to snap Amity out of it.
“If you won’t tell me what went down last night, I’ll be forced to do this.”
Furrowing her eyebrows, Amity finally let go of her jaw again and gave her an arrogant snort.
“What do you seriously want to do to me? You’re pathetic.”
Luz surged forward and caught Amity’s lips, grabbed her head tightly with one hand while her other flew to Amity’s waist, her fingers finding a way to her bare skin before cupping her waist with her palm and slipping upwards softly.
This had usually rendered Amity a blabbering mess in the past, so it should hopefully be enough to snap her out of this. The witch fought back, but not with the power she had possessed before. Luz pressed closer, pulled Amity’s middle to her, and kept her neck in a tight grip, nuzzling closer to her and kissing her lips desperately.
Amity’s fighting died down before something cold wiped over Luz’s face. The witch in her arms collapsed against her, her face falling against Luz’s shoulder. Her body went slack and Luz had to bring up all her strength to catch Amity, roll her off slowly and bring her to a halt on the floor.
The witch was out cold, not necessarily something Luz had planned for, but it was a good sign Amity hadn’t been able to withstand her.
Instead, Luz was facing herself.
The pointy ears and the smug grin on her face were the only things differing from Luz’s appearance, the bruises as well but Luz didn’t count them. Furrowing her eyebrows, she remembered King’s lesson about demons.
There were emotion-sucking beasts, out there to make deadly deals with desperate people. Amity must’ve fallen for a demon like that, and made a deal to exchange her emotions for power. Luz felt a chill running down her spine when the demon laughed.
“Are you surprised?”, they asked smugly while sauntering around Luz and the unconscious Amity, circling them.
“Not that much…”, Luz replied, keeping close to Amity, “But you lost. Now scram.”
The demon merely cackled and gestured to its former vessel on the floor, smirking.
“I haven’t had my payment yet.”
Luz growled, cupping Amity’s cheek.
“You won’t get her back. You better leave or I’ll kick your ass, you understand?”, she tried lashing out but the demon merely let her hand wipe through their appearance and laughed.
“I don’t want her back.”, they cackled, then they focused back on Luz, kneeling and cupping Amity’s other cheek. Luz clenched her teeth at that, “I just want a vessel, not necessarily hers.”
She knew what the demon was playing at. Exchange her for Amity.
Normally, she would’ve taken this deal immediately, out of sheer panic for Amity’s wellbeing. Hell, she would’ve taken it now, if there wasn’t some little problem with that.
“I said leave.”, Luz gritted her teeth, clenching her fist when she glared at the demon, “You used Amity to bring so much pain. I won’t let you do that again, not with her, not with me, not with anybody.”
The demon was almost impressed at that but didn’t back down.
“I could make you powerful, Luz… I could give you native magic. I could make you create a portal to the human realm, see your mother again.”
Luz gulped but merely lowered her gaze.
“I don’t want your empty promises.”, she growled, then she slowly reached for the emergency light glyph she always kept on her person. It wasn’t that useful in a fight, but to scare off a demon, it might just work.
“But Luz, my promises aren’t empty.”, changing forms, the demon now took Amity’s face and stood up, “You could be with Amity. I could help you stand up to her parents and your bullies. I could make you so powerful to mess with them all.”
But she wouldn’t back down.
Luz huffed, then she got up.
“I said LEAVE!!”, she screamed, before pulling the light glyph and conjuring it in the demon’s face to blind them, before getting up in their face, “Or I’ll annihilate you because the Owl Lady is my mentor and she taught me to kick demon ass.”
She was just bluffing, after all, Eda hadn’t exactly taught her how to defeat possessive demons, but they apparently understood. They squinted their eyes at first, but when Luz didn’t back down, they huffed.
“You’re too much effort.”, they growled before leaving in a puff of smoke. Contently, Luz leaned back and smiled to herself. These demons feed off of self-doubt and if Luz didn’t give an opening, they’d give up soon enough. After all, there were weaker targets to go after.
Behind her, Amity groaned and Luz turned, seeing her girlfriend sitting up in the trashed classroom before looking around, her eyes widening.
“… Luz?”
The human kneeled down and softly brushed over Amity’s cheek, smiling.
“Hey, are you okay? Sorry for using that on you.”
Looking around, Amity took in the mess, her eyes asking if they had really done that, but another few things burned on her heart first before she could ask.
“… I-I-… I’m so, so sorry, Luz… I didn’t mean to hurt you, or anyone for that matter! I didn’t know what came over me, suddenly there was so much power and-”
Luz sat down and pulled her closer, sighing against her shoulder.
“It’s okay. We understand. Please don’t feel guilty, you were taken advantage of.”
Amity slowly began sobbing, before full-on wailing into Luz’s shoulder, while the human held her close. She would always be right there to catch Amity, and she would never judge her for something like this. The demon had found her in her weakest moment and hit a sore spot. It hadn’t been her fault.
“I-I hurt s-s-o many pe-eople-”, she cried but Luz shook her head and rubbed over her back.
“We’ll fix this. It’s okay, Amity, we’ll make sure they understand.”, the witch leaned against her and continued crying until there were no more tears left. Luz parted softly and brushed over her cheek, “I’m just glad you’re okay… I really wouldn’t have liked to lose you to a possessive demon.”
Amity groaned, then she tried hiding her face, but instead, Luz nudged her nose and softly kissed her.
“I’m so sorry…”, Amity whispered and Luz smiled.
“I know. That’s a start, okay?”
She nodded before falling back against Luz and keeping her close, sighing into Luz’s shoulder and wrapping her arms around her girlfriend.
“Th-Thank you for staying… A few hours more and the demon would’ve devoured me.”
Luz nodded and weaved her fingers through Amity’s hair, holding her close, making her feel as protected as she could.
“I wouldn’t ever leave you to a fate like this, Amity.”

Let me know if you liked it! It's kinda short, I know, but I won't write more for it, it was just to relieve my headcanon x)

Her Real Family -- Owl House One-Shot FanFic.
Author's Note: I wrote this story yesterday (Sunday), but as I was editing it, the power went out for the rest of the night. So, as I was putting the last touches on it today (Monday), the promo for the Season Finale came out. To those who are reading my Owl House x DC Universe Crossover, I'm still working on it; this was just something I wanted to get out before the promo was released — which didn't end up being the case. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy this one-shot.
.
.
.
Luz had broken into the Conformatorium successfully. Now all that was left to do was find Eda and bring her back. Back to the Owl House... and to herself. She had her glyphs, the Witch's Wool cloak Eda made for her, and her backpack — which contained what she hoped would be the cure. But one problem stood in her way.
"What are you doing here?" Lilith demanded. "I thought I told you to go back to the Human Realm."
"I'm not going anywhere while Eda needs me!" Luz shouted.
"I should've known her little pet would've been as stubborn as her." Lilith summoned her staff. "But I didn't think you'd be foolish enough to come alone."
"I didn't."
King let out a squeak of rage as he jumped on and bit down on Lilith's arm. "Ahhhhhhhh!" The Emperor's Witch cried in pain, trying to shake King off. "Get off of me!"
"Go 'ind E'a! Go 'ind E'a!" King repeated as he kept his jaws clamped on her arm, swinging around.
Luz nodded and shot straight for the stairs.
Lilith continued shaking her arm. "Get off me, you insolent little…"
"Ne'er!" King continued to rebel.
"That does it!" Lilith drew a circle and generated electricity in her hand. She grabbed the little demon with it.
"Ahhhhhhhh!" King screamed and was forced to let go, dropping to the ground.
"I will not let a Human undo everything I've worked for!" Lilith picked King up by the back of his neck before following Luz.
Speaking of which, Luz kept running up the flights of stairs and looking into the different rooms for any sign of Eda. A giant owl monster won't be that hard to miss.
"Stop, right there!" A deep and familiar voice said as Luz turned around. It was Warden Wrath. "I know you. You're the Human that thwarted my plans with the Owl Lady." He approached Luz with his massive hands holding something.
Luz took out her notepad and prepared some Fire spells. "I'm freeing Eda. And I'm not going to let you stop me."
"Stop you?" The Warden seemed confused. "I'm not going to stop you. I'm going to help you."
Now Luz was the confused one. "Tú eres qué?" Warden Wrath opened his hands to reveal, "Owlbert!" The Palisman flew over to Luz and rubbed against her cheek. "I missed you, too."
"I got to him before Emperor Belos could crack him open." Owlbert attested the claim with a hoot.
"Why are you helping me?"
"I saw the creature they dragged in and was shocked to learn it was the Witch who's heart I am after. But I also heard what they had to do to get her. I may have done cruel things, but I would never do what was done. I know where Eda is and can take you to her."
Luz looked down at Owlbert, who affirmed what Wrath said with a hoot. "Alright, but I only trust you because Owlbert trusts you."
"Follow me." Wrath began leading the way but stopped. "By the way, if we make it out of this alive, could you put in a good word for me for Eda?"
"If we make it out of this alive, I'll consider it."
"Works for me."
Luz followed Wrath further up the stairs until they came across a large cage where the Owl Beast slammed against the bars to free itself. "Eda!" Luz called out. Her mentor's cursed form just shrieked at her, and Owlbert hid behind her in fear. "Why is she still like this? I thought the Emperor could cure her?"
"From what I've heard, this curse is beyond the Emperor's power."
"Don't worry, Eda. We're going to get you out of here."
"I'll need to sedate her before opening the cage." Wrath said as he walked over to a box on the wall with the Healing Coven's symbol. But before he could reach for it, a Fireball struck him from behind, and he collapsed to the ground.
Luz turned around and spotted Lilith with a struggling King in hand. "You're not going anywhere."
"Let me go! I'll pulverize you!" The squirming demon threatened.
"Let King go!" Luz demanded.
"I knew I should've finished you off when I had the chance. I won't make the same mistake again."
"My friends, Willow and Gus, they know what kind of person you are. And Amity, too. We told her. If I fail, they'll find a way to free Eda."
"Then I'll deal with them like how I'll deal with you."
Luz was stunned at what she just heard. "You… You would kill your apprentice."
Lilith narrowed her eyes. "If I must."
Luz realized that there was no negotiating with her, and she was not going to let her hurt her friends. She pasted two Light glyphs onto her hands and charged at Lilith, who held King out like a shield — just like she did with her to capture Eda. Luz leaped into the air and clapped the glyphs together. The radiance was so bright that it forced Lilith to shield her eyes and drop King in the process. The little demon scampered away, and Luz stepped back while Lilith was disoriented.
Eda continued to shriek and slam herself against the bars. "King." Luz ran over to her friend and handed him the backpack. "I need you to help make Eda remember who she is."
"Do you think this will work?" He asked.
"I h…" Luz paused. "I know it'll work."
"You little brat." Lilith spat as her vision returned.
"I'll keep her busy." Luz took out three Plant glyphs and sent a trio of large vines after Lilith.
Enraged at her defiance, Lilith spun her staff and sent a stream of blue fire at the girl, burning the vines to ash. Luz took the Witch's Wool to shield herself as the blast sent her flying into the next room. The magical cloak prevented her from being burned, but it did not dampen the impact. Before she could react, Lilith teleported into the room and smacked Luz across the face with her staff, sending her farther back.
"You're out of your league, child." Lilith taunted. "Your powers are just cheap parlor tricks compared to mine."
"Probably," Luz responded as she stood up, she touched her runny nose and saw blood on her fingers. "But I'm still going to beat you."
Lilith chuckled. "You beat me? You're just an insignificant Human who wound up here just by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. There's nothing special about you. There never was. But if this is how you wish to die…"
"Maybe you're right, but what you think of me doesn't matter. I know who I am. And I'm not going home without Eda. Bailemos, Bruja!"
Lilith scowled at the girl and dashed towards her with blue flames trailing behind. Luz managed to roll out of the way and slammed an Ice glyph onto the ground. The pillar shot up and hit Lilith in the stomach. She stumbled back before, but quickly regained her balance and countered with a Fireball. Luz protected herself with the cloak, but the impact still knocked out the wind from her lungs, and a second one did so again.
She looked up as Lilith was about to bring her staff down on her. Luz tumbled out of the way and used a Fire glyph to burn Lilith's feet. Lilith yelped in pain and smacked Luz upside the head with her staff. Luz sent another vine to hit Lilith in the face with, but she sliced it apart with a blade of fire then tossed it at the girl. Luz managed to duck from the blade but wasn't fast enough to avoid another hit to the face.
"I don't know why I was expecting a challenge." Lilith continued to taunt. "No one is a match for me. I'm the leader of the Emperor's Coven for a reason."
"Alguna vez se calla?" Luz cursed to herself. All she's ever said is how great she is; on and on about how great she is, and… Luz came to realize something. She figured out Lilith's weakness. A weakness that she should've seen upon learning it was her who cursed Eda. "So that's what all of this has been about."
Luz took out three Plant glyphs and Fire glyphs and slammed them on the ground at the same time. More vines came at Lilith, who smirked as she cut them apart with another fire blade, which triggered the Fire spell and made them explode like a bomb. The impact slammed Lilith into a wall, while Luz used her cloak to keep her skin safe.
"What was that?" Lilith questioned.
"It's called being creative; something Eda taught me," Luz responded with renewed confidence.
The anger in Lilith's expression became more pronounced. "Magic isn't supposed to be used like that! It's dangerous!"
"Eda, and I prefer clever." Luz slammed her Fire and Ice glyphs together and filled the room up with steam. This distracted Lilith enough for Luz to sneak away, but Lilith saw where she was going and pursued.
Meanwhile, King opened the backpack. Inside was a collection of items; reminders of the various hijinks the trio had gotten into the last couple of months. They believe that the Eda they know is somewhere inside the Owl Beast, and they just need to bring her out.
"Eda, do you remember this?" King asked as he showed her the tiny crown Luz gave him after they broke into the Conformatorium the first time around. The Owl Beast just shrieked. "Or this?" King held the fake map that Luz was duped into that one time. But the Owl Beast continued to shriek. "Maybe this will work." King took out the sparkly pen and turned it on. Owl Eda was immediately entranced by it like she was before. "Do you remember?" The batteries then died, and Eda shrieked again. "Eda, I know you're in there. Luz needs you."
The backpack tipped over, and a picture fell out. It was a recent one; featuring Eda, King, Hooty, Willow, Gus, Amity, and, "L… Lu…"
King gasped. "What did you say?"
"L… Lu…" The Owl Beast was trying to make words.
"Yes, that's Luz. Your apprentice. The Human who came into our lives and made it better. She's here, and she's fighting your sister to save you. She's fighting your sister because she loves you; because we all love you. You need to remember. You need to come back to us."
"L… Lu… L… Lu… Luz…" The beast's black eyes began dissolving back to their original color slowly… and something more.
As that was happening, Lilith followed Luz into a new room. It was completely dark, save for the light of her staff, and there were many columns where the girl could hide behind. "Where are you? Come out, come out, wherever you are." Lilith crooned. She saw something move to her left. "Found you!" She launched a Fireball and destroyed the column. The destroyed support glowed with the symbol of an Ice glyph, which shot out and slammed into her frame. Lilith's frustration continued growing. "Show yourself, you coward!"
"I'm the coward?" Luz's voice echoed throughout the room. "That's rich coming from you."
Lilith thought she spotted Luz again and cast another spell, only to trigger a Plant glyph that smacked her across the face. "You don't belong here! Edalyn is with her real family!"
"Her real family? The real family that cursed her?" Lilith cast another spell upon seeing a shadow move, only to trigger another trap, with a Fire glyph this time. "I think I finally understand you now."
"And what, pray tell, do you understand?"
"The way Eda talked about you, I always assumed you joined the Emperor's Coven out of some crazy belief you have about him. But now I realize what it's always been about. Your ego." Lilith cast another spell and triggered another Plant glyph. "You were jealous of what Eda could do. That she was a more powerful Witch than you were. Heck, I bet if she joined the Coven, she would be The Emperor's favorite instead of you."
"You know nothing! All Edalyn did was squander her potential! She didn't deserve the power she had!" Lilith's anger continued to grow, and her spells became sloppier with each cast. She didn't care if she triggered more traps and inflicted more pain to herself; she wanted to shut Luz up.
"So, you had to curse your sister as a child to prove a point. But all it proves is that you were pitiful then as you are now."
"I'm not listening to this!" Lilith continued to cast more spells and trigger more traps. Her once pristine dress was damaged, her face bruised and scarred, and her straight hair was a frantic mess.
"I can't believe I was afraid of you. Lilith of the Emperor's Coven isn't a real Witch at all. Lilith of the Emperor's Coven is just a complete joke." Luz began to laugh. "And not even the good kind."
"Stop it! Stop it! Stop laughing!"
"You couldn't even beat Eda without giving her a handicap or without a hostage to hide behind."
"I command you to stop laughing!"
"And you know what I can't tell is funnier. That Eda's more of a true Witch than you'll ever be! Or that I'm more of a true Witch than you'll ever be!"
Lilith's rage reached its peak. "YOU ARE NOT A WITCH!" She cast the most powerful spell she could muster in her current state as blue flames enveloped everything. The fire spread across the room and broke apart the columns and burnt away the glyphs before they could activate. The entire room trembled as the roof above began to collapse all around.
If it weren't for the Witch's Wool, it would've been the end of Luz. Even though she wasn't burned, the blast caused her cloak to be undone and be blown away. The girl tried making it into the next room while avoiding everything collapsing around her. But she tripped, and rubble fell onto her. "Ahhhhhhhh!" She cried from the pain and soon realized she couldn't feel her legs. She tried pushing the rocks off, but they wouldn't budge.
"There you are." Lilith walked over to her in an unhinged manner. Luz looked for her glyphs and saw they were gathered in a pile next to her. She tried reaching for them, but they were set ablaze. Lilith threw her staff aside, got on top of the pinned girl, and enveloped her fingers around her throat. Luz struggled to breathe as she tried to force Lilith off, or free her throat, but couldn't do anything. "You're not a real Witch! So, you don't deserve to die like one!" She had a deranged smile on her face and a look of satisfaction in seeing Luz's life slip away. The girl thought that this was the end of the line... She was going to die here...
"Get your hands off my apprentice!" Before Lilith could process it, the mother of all Fireballs struck her in the back and sent her toppling off Luz and slamming right into a wall.
Luz took in several deep breaths and looked up to see a blazing shape of magical energy enveloping the shadowy silhouette of, "Eda!" Luz's eyes were filled with tears.
"Sorry for being late, kid." The Owl lady said as she floated over to her.
King ran up from behind Eda, with Owlbert perched on his head, huffing and puffing. "You… are… really… fast…"
"How?" Lilith said as she forced herself up. "How are you back to normal? Answer me!"
"If you'll excuse me for one second, Luz." Eda glared at Lilith. "I have some unfinished business I need to take care of."
Lilith called for her staff, but Eda cast a spell to burn every part of it, except for the Palisman. Lilith cast spell after spell, each attack fueled by hatred, but Eda managed to deflect or avoid them. Lilith screamed as she unleashed her most potent spells, only for Eda to do so in turn. But the Owl Lady's spells overpowered Lilith's and sent her through the wall and kept on going until she landed into the middle of an empty cell. Before she could even stand, Eda appeared right in front of Lilith and pinned her against the wall.
"How is this…" Lilith tried mustering the words.
"No more words from you!" Eda snapped. "Now you're going to listen to me, sister. I will never join any Coven, especially the Emperor's Coven. I will never forgive you for what you did to me, to Luz, and to everyone I care about. And if you ever come near any of us again, I will end you."
Lilith looked over Eda's shoulder and saw King and Owlbert putting all the effort they could into freeing Luz. "You would choose them over your real family?"
"They are my real family." With that said, Eda left Lilith where she was and flew back to the people who put their lives on the line to save her. The energy surrounding Eda finally dissipated, revealing…
"Eda, your hair," Luz said. Her teacher's hair was no longer the elderly grey it once was, but bright orange. The features of her face changed, too; she still looked old but had a bit more youthfulness. "Does that mean the curse…"
"It's gone. I don't know how, but it's gone."
"Maybe it was the power of our love that broke it. Just like I thought it would."
"Kid, please, that sounds like a bunch of mushy stuff from your books."
Luz sighed. "Yeah, you're probably right."
Eda roller her eyes. "But I won't rule out the possibility. Can you walk?"
"I can stand, but I'll need some help."
"I got you." Eda pulled Luz up and let her lean against her.
Owlbert flew by and dropped the Witch's Wool cloak on the girl's head. "Thanks, Owlbert."
Lilith stepped out of the cell; her eyes still full of madness and envy. "No! I won't accept this!" She shouted as she eyed Luz and cast a spell intended to strike her.
But Eda sensed the oncoming attack and deflected it right back at her sister, striking her gemstone and sending falling back. "It's over, Lily," Eda told her. "Stay down."
Lilith pointed at Eda. "It'll never be over while you're still free. Emperor Belos won't stop until…" Suddenly, plumage emerged from her arm. "No. No!"
Eda and Luz gasped as they saw what was happening. "She cursed herself."
Lilith's body began contorting, snapping and bending in unnatural ways as more feathers began to sprout. "Edalyn! Help me! Sister, please!"
Eda was about to step forward to help but stopped and — with a frigid glare — told Lilith, "You're the smart one. So, help yourself."
"Edalyn! Edalyn!" Lilith continued crying and changed until all that stood was a beast twice her size and had the appearance of a raven. What goes around, comes around. The transformed Lilith shrieked and charged at the prey in front of her. But the cell door suddenly closed shut, and the Raven Beast slammed into them, still screeching.
Luz, Eda, and King turned around and saw that Warden Wrath pulled a lever down. "That won't hold her for long. She'll need a new cell. You should all leave while you have the chance."
"Thank you, Warden," Luz said.
"So, are you going to hold up your end of the deal?"
"Of course."
"Yes, score for Warden Wrath."
"Great, now can we go home?" King asked. "I need to bake Luz a new cake for me to pop out of."
"And what deal is he talking about?" Eda asked her apprentice.
"I'll tell you when we get home," Luz replied.
The outlaws of the Boiling Isles took their leave, as they will have a long way down to go. Eda looked back for a moment and saw the transformed Lilith continuing to slam against the cell and shriek. The Owl Lady did hold some regret about what has happened to her sister. But if she's being honest with herself, she and Lilith haven't been sisters since they were kids.

FULL REVIEWS: “Lost In Language”
Lost in language and I don't know much. Was I thinking aloud and fell out of touch? But I'm back on my feet and eager to be what you wanted.
Seriously? Nothing? You guys have never heard Air Supply? I mean, they’re old AF but still. It’s a funny pun. Whatever.
Back in the day (like it was so long ago) I didn’t know what to expect from this episode. The only thing I caught from the description was library, but hoo boy, we got so much more!
Tumblr media
I love the cold opens to this show. It always reminds me that Luz is a silly ass hyper fangirl who still wants life to play out like it does on TV.
Tumblr media
“Learning about love and life through the eyes of a child.”
Spoken like a true person who have never done any actual babysitting. The Bat Queen gets her own soft intro for another episode, which I’m noticing more and more re-watching this show. She pays Eda to watch her baby in exchange for a butt-ton of money. Eda, in classic Eda fashion, would rather not split the cash with Luz and gives her an errand to run so she doesn’t have to do it.
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you guys, but liked going to the library when I was a kid. It was the only way I could play computer games or go on the internet. Getting online is the easiest thing in the world today, but when I was a kid, it was a luxury my parents couldn’t afford. And dumb-dumb kid me didn’t know that you can borrow movies and comic for free at the library too. That’s how I saw Jaws for the first time.
The library at The Boiling Isles is almost exactly what I expected. Kinda like the Hogwarts library, but with a lot more teeth and eyes everywhere. Luz has a bunch of fun just messing around, until she stumbles upon the cutest goddamn thing ever!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amity reading to kids at the public library in her free time. My god.
Tumblr media
I’m with Luz here. Holy hell, I did not see that coming. I thought Amity was the rival character, the Draco Malfoy of the show, the reluctant ally, the jerk with the heart of gold DEEP in there somewhere. Instead she’s at the Kid’s Corner reading her favorite childhood classic to toddlers. I didn’t know there were angels in the demon realm.
Tumblr media
Stop. Stop! You’re already cute.
Seriously this moment made me go “aw” and laugh at the same time. It was weird. Also how does this library have a manga section? Do they import these books from JAPAN in the HUMAN REALM? Is there a publishing company that acts as the middleman? Or are these just the books that the trash slugs ended up barfing on the beach somewhere? I’m thinking too hard about a throwaway joke in the background. Big brain hurt.
Tumblr media
AND back to reality...
Luz tries to extend the hand of friendship to Amity and Amity rejects it. I have...thoughts.
First, they this up with another parallel to Azura in the beginning of the episode. I get it. It’s a theme that they are doing, but I would have rather have Luz try to befriend Amity because she wants to, not because Azura did it. It’s not the only reason she does it, but it does kinda bug me a bit. It kinda goes back to Luz wanting life to play out like a story.
Also, a part of me thinks that this is something Amity likes to do alone. Her way of getting away from everyone else and just do something that she enjoys and makes her feel good. We have no proof that it gives her extra credit, so she could just use that as a way to save face. She seemed so happy to do it too.
Finally, you know what this else this reminds me of? The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. There’s a popular fan theory that has been around since the eighties that if you look at The Karate Kid from the rival’s perspective, the protagonist is the bully. I’m more than sure that’s what going on here. From Amity’s perspective, Luz just gets her into trouble. We’ll get more into that later.
Luz walks off dejected and we get the second big surprise to punch me in the face.
Tumblr media
Holy hell, why the fuck are you two so goddamn fucking pretty? I mean, holy shit, look at these two. My god. And ERICA LINDBECK as Emira? Jesus Christ, I’m going to be feeling things I shouldn’t be feeling in places I can’t say!
Joking aside, we get one of our first full introductions that didn’t come with a soft intro from a previous episode. Enter Emira and Emira, Amity’s older siblings who in true sibling fashion like to give Amity a hard time.
Tumblr media
“Hey, mittens!”
Tumblr media
This seems normal at first. Siblings always rib each other. No big deal.
Amity storms off. The twins introduce themselves proper to Luz (and the audience) and they mess around for a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, they have so much fun messing around with Luz that they decide to invite her back afterhours to check out The Wailing Star. Luz thinks that this is a great way to get on Amity’s good side by befriending her siblings. Why she would think this I have no idea.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile the B-plot continues its adventures in babysitting. I don’t like using the word filler (so I won’t) but this B-plot is really just for two things: setting up Escape of the Palisman and jokes. It does both. No harm, no foul.
Also the twins said for Luz to meet back at midnight and Luz was at The Owl House for like a hot second. There’s like a huge gap of time there. What did she do until midnight? Whatever. If it was important it would have been animated.
Also also, I love all of Luz’s little saying in this episode. She does it a lot but they cranked it up in this episode. Featuring great hits like:
“This sour lemon drop has a hidden sweet center.”
and
“I thought we were as cool as cucumbers but we’re as sour as pickles.”
and my favorite
“Call me a library book because they were checking me out.”
I hope they keep doing that.
Tumblr media
Back at the literal Wailing Star (I laughed so hard), The twins and Luz discover that The Wailing Star brings the content of the books to life. Does that work for all books in The Boiling Isles or just the library? Enough. No more big brain. The three proceed to...mess around some more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The twins discover offscreen (Really? Really.) that if you edit the contents of the book, you change what comes to life. Then the twins reveal their true objectives. Apparently, Amity has been tattling on the twins whenever they cut class or do whatever it is that they want. They’ve decided to look for her secret little hideaway (that they somehow know is in the library), find her diary and post all the pages all over school to teach her a lesson.
Um, fucking no.
Tumblr media
And here we enter the true lesson of this episode and probably the reason why Hecate is draw with two faces. People being more than just what they appear to be at face value.
Amity appears to be the bully character of the show, and while she did bully Willow, Luz and King, there’s more to her than that. Amity is lonely. As a fellow person who grew up lonely, trust me. I can tell from a mile away. She puts pressure on herself to be the best at whatever she’s doing and to be the best. She hates that she follows the rules but people like her siblings seem to get rewarded for breaking the rules and doing whatever they want free of consequence. She sees the double standard that they live by and it angers her. But at the same time, everyone seems to give the twins a free pass so she can’t do anything about it.
Even worse, there’s no one for her to confide in. It wouldn’t make it better but it would make it easier for her to just vent and get the bullshit out of her brain. She doesn’t like her friends and the one friend she did like...that’s for another episode. Hence, the diary. Amity is a big ball of frustration and loneliness. I know because I grew up in a very similar way.
When you’re forced to keep your anger inside you, you lash out at any little thing that bothers you just to ease your frustrations. It doesn’t make it okay but it’s the only way to cope sometimes just to get by.
The twins on the other hand seem like everything you’d want in a friend. They’re fun; they like you; they’re attractive; they’re attentive. But in reality, they live in a world where they believe consequences and accountability don’t apply to them. And they’ll do anything to keep it that way. Even humiliate their sister.
Luz seems like a happy-go-lucky, friends to all things kinda person, but she can also be innocently insensitive. She just does things hoping they turn out the way they would for Azura without considering how the people around her would feel about it.
It doesn’t make any of these characters two-faced. We just are different things to different people.
Tumblr media
Amity discovers what’s going down and Luz (being the empathic person that she is) decide to try to go talk to her.
Then I’m reminded that this is a horror-comedy.
Tumblr media
My god, you’re ugly.
Tumblr media
One climax later (don’t laugh), and Luz and Amity try to make amends with each other. They both have to think about how they’ve been treating the other, earning the title of bully or not. They’re not friends yet but this is...better.
FINAL SCORE: 5 - Loved it.
Damn, The Owl House is one a roll. That’s what? Three 5 scored episodes already? Hot damn. This episode was fun but it really hit hard with the character work on Amity. She quickly became one of the most interesting characters and a fan favorite. And the third act provided a good amount of horror to call this a horror comedy. The B-plot is fine but probably one of the weakest only saved by several funny jokes. This is one of those episodes I kept coming back to and a favorite to watch.
Tumblr media
Could you two please not? I’m gonna get in trouble.
