me thinking about the moment in the movie where leo is fighting krangified raph and he is feeling so much pressure and so much stress and guilt and he is so so scared for his family and for raph especially because he just wants to get raph out safely, he just wants his brother with him and their family unharmed and in one piece, but he can’t get through why won’t raph HEAR him why isn’t raph LISTENING he just wants to SAVE HIM why is he making things SO HARD--

and that is the moment where it finally fully clicks for leo, after all this, where raph was coming from at the start of the movie. that it wasn’t about being stubborn or wanting to call all the shots and be the boss, it wasn’t pettiness or raph being hard on them for no reason. it was always just raph wanting them to be safe, and getting scared and frustrated when doing that was difficult. or when, perhaps, certain stinker lil brothers seemed to be going out of their way to make it difficult.

Leo

- Always loses you when you guys go out together - You often wander to "Find a New Adventure" and sometimes end up in situations you can't get yourself out of - But if the situation is not some-one, they're not sure if they should be more afraid of Leo or you - (Mostly because of your RBF but we don't mention that) - He trusts your judgment and instinct, however, when people try to mess with you - There are very few people whose bad side he would want to be on. - Splinter. April. You. - Like Raph, he understands overthinking - However, as the oldest/leader, he understands the most out of the four brothers - He likes making art with you since he too has developed an interest in drawing - Sometimes, though, he just likes to meditate in the same room as you while you're drawing/making music/crafting - He knows both Japanese and Spanish and has offered to help you in studying them - He also offers to help teach you Italian once you're fluent in Spanish - He knows you don't always like being picked up, but still teases you for being short - (All in good fun, of course. oh my god i never told you guys abt my disaster twins competitive pkmn players concept. one sec ill put it under a cut for you bc this might get long lmao

so basically. gen 9 came out, and the boys, in their recent-switch glory, were like omg hell yes. game time. donnie and leo both get violet and mikey and raph both get scarlet (theyve got their own games bc they would tear each other apart if they had to share physical copies trust me) and generally trade around exclusives and chill etc etc. also while im on this leo picks quaxly, mikey is a toss up between fuecoco and quaxly, raph picks fuecoco obvs, and donnie picks sprigatito, as does april when she gets her own copy of violet later (which she honestly only chose for the loyalty points lmao she likes karaidon better)

anyways i was saying. donnie is one of those nerds who like perfectly iv trains his normal ass in-game team and builds perfect compositions around typings and looks up the gyms types n stuff and he was SO excited when he learned abt tera types and how they impacted team comps

leo on the other hand has the messiest type crossover and team comp EVER but still manages to thrash his opponents bc he uses really good movesets and strategies

the twins get into watching competitive videos while they play violet in silence together (hashtag parallel play) until donnie eventually starts commenting on weird stat spreads and leo eventually bursts out about shitty move choices and weird sets, or leo starts showing donnie videos abt odd pkmn getting high in latters, and then they start watching showdown battles...

and they lightbulb.

donnie loves building teams more than anything else, loves making them efficient as humanly possible.

leo loves showing the potential of odd pokemon and would kill for a good strategic challenge after all this time (hes been protecting against nemona and using electroweb against gym leaders, poor guy).

and, well, its not like you need anything special to get on the ladder in violet...

they start out simple, donnie building a basic team and leo reviewing it before going at the basic gen 9 ladders.

they kind of wreck house.

they just start going at the ladders with that team in their free time, then a different one when they get bored, then one with a few oddballs when donnie decides to ask leo what pokemon he wants to use, then they get kind of bored of just paldean pokemon so donnie gets to work understanding showdown...

but while its fun, they dont have anyone to brag to, because their brothers have no fucking clue what theyre talking about.

donnie has experience with youtube, right?

so they set up a little joint thing; a channel called disasterx2, no webcam, just videos about ladder battles. they end up specializing both in unique teams and movesets and in just vids about breaking down walls in ladders with a normal team. what makes both nifty is that donnie explains the whole team comp in a separate video to the battles, and the aesthetic quality is improved by donnies sensibilities and mikeys input (he was absolutely excited when they asked him to help with it. leo was no help. so much offense, actually, i have a feeling his fashion sense is good but the moment you try to make him make something look good visually on its own hes screwed.), and leos strategies are batshit, and ofc the boys are the boys, they go on tangents sometimes when they do real-time audio during battles and sometimes they just. dont cut them out. raph and mikey make guest appearances sometimes, april cheers them on on occasion, her and raph are very relieved bc its finally something non destructive they can spend their time on, its all great.

leo very often picks pokemon and movesets out and then donnie provides the pokemon (through breeding and stat spread tweaking, because god knows hed love that nerd shit). donnie likes it because 1. how leo uses those outlier pokemon is very interesting and 2. it gives him an opportunity to think about how to apply the right stats, natures, etc to apply to the pokemon and moves leo chose.

one of my favorite ever headcanons is that leo gets quiet when he focuses. like, dead quiet, and terrifyingly quiet. hes well known in their fandom for being very chatty over voiceover and then pretty quiet whenever hes playing challenging battles. donnie doesnt understand the strategies all that well so when leo gets too focused he just talks a lot abt the stat spreads and they add extra text to the video lmao. sometimes they utilize their clueless family members to have them ask questions they wouldnt have considered due to their knowledge in videos, sometimes donnie snags mikey while leos too quiet when theyre doing real-time audio, etc the fam knows theyre just glad theyre having fun

Rise of the tmnt has some of the best characterization that I've ever seen. I have some plot related criticism (which becomes unimportant given the target audience of the show, you know children don't notice plot holes lmao) but I can analyze the characters much more than any big shot Marvel or Disney movie I've seen.

So here we go (remember this is my own free interpretation and analysis, I am well aware that I might get things wrong):

Each of them are smart in some ways but dumb in others:

Donnie: academically smart, technology genius, very hard working, determined, passionate but has a hard time understanding emotions (which doesn't necessarily prevent him from being considerate though)

Raph: common sense smart, responsible, experienced ("Do not eat THE POISON!"), but he's bad at strategizing (his plans are kinda bad lmao) and he can't keep his cool under pressure sometimes

Mikey: emotions and feelings smart (heck, even Dr. Delicate Touch gets the job done when he wants to take care of a situation) but completely lacks common sense (this may be due to him being younger than the others though)

Leo: he's plain smart. He's really good at strategizing, tricking people, he knows the right thing to say to people at the right time, he can keep his cool under pressure, BUT he's lazy and inconsiderate at times. Also very academically dumb (like come on who doesn't know what "nigh" means lol)

I could make an allignmennt chart out of this. And a circle:

Leo can do what Raph can't (strategy), Raph can do what Mikey can't (common sense), Mikey can do what Donnie can't (empathy) and Donnie can do what Leo can't (working hard).

[One note about Leo and Donnie: it's so on point that Leo is lazy because achieving things come very easy and natural for him, thanks to his social skills and quick thinking, while Donnie has to work hard by making machines (I mean for him it's actually easy and fun but it's still a lot of work) and using creativity to invent new things that can help him through everyday life. Both of these ways of living are effective though very different. In their case, one can't do the other. Now it's not like Leo and the others never work hard, but Donnie is on an exceptional level so that's more of his thing, just like everyone else is on an exceptional level on their own thing.]

And that's why they're 1) the perfect team because they complete each other 2) the perfect cast of characters because every viewer (mostly teens of course) can relate to at least one of them (if not all of them)

There's also some parallels and things in common with all the characters too (they are brothers after all) even if it's for completely different reasons:

Donnie and Leo both have high self esteem (most of the time), which sometimes develops into arrogance and self centered behavior, but mostly because they're actually hiding insecurity

Mikey and Raph are both very considerate of others and are always concerned about everyone (even though Raph is like that because of his morals, he feels like it's his "duty", while Mikey is just a spread love kinda guy lmao) and naive

Both Raph and Donnie are well aware of their responsibilities (Raph saved Leo and Donnie shielded Mikey in the film)

Mikey and Leo are both good at socializing

Leo and Raph are both leaders (Raph more as a caretaker while Leo more as a guide) who occasionally don't trust their fellow team members and take burdens all on their own (just look at the entire plot of the movie lol)

Mikey and Donnie are very different, I can't remember anything they have in common at the moment but maybe that's just me

Lastly, it's so great and well written how everyone changes across the show:

Raph learns to trust his brothers more and to not take burdens all on his own (the season two finale was all about that)

Leo learns to be more trustworthy, less arrogant, and more responsible as he does things prepared to face the consequences in the end (mainly in the movie, in the show he doesn't have a lot of character development)

Donnie learns to accept and be open minded about others even if he can't fully understand them (he realizes that he can't "fix" his siblings, but he actually needs them for who they are) and he also learns that others do the same for him (that time April told him something like "we don't like you because of your tech, we like you because of you" had me sobbing)

Mikey becomes generally more competent, mainly in fighting? Cause he can throw entire cruise ships and buildings? I can't really think of more deeper character development, he's the nicest loving ray of sunshine ever even though he can be harsh if necessary, he's a pretty balanced guy that's all. But maybe I missed something I dunno

okokok, what if leo looses his arm from the capitol torture

Listen you all know I am more then willing to hack a limb off, but I want this to be more personal.

Yes losing a limb is painful and comes with its own set of difficulties. But I want something that is targeted. They used him as a strategist, they know he can fight but it’s his brain that they want to stop.

Cutting out his tongue means he can’t communicate plans. I doubt many people in that world know that sign langue’s exists much less understand it. (Again I haven’t read mockingjay yet so correct me if I’m wrong) but like Leo’s the face man. He talks and tells jokes to lighten the mood. He has a silver tongue. He can talk to anyone and get them on his side. He was amazing at getting sponsors once he knew what he was doing. He was a fan favorite because he was so charming. His voice is the way he gains peoples trust.

Rise Leo specifically is better as a support then a front fighter. He’s portal ability allows him to set other members of his team up for the best hits, add that to a strategic mind and he has the makings of a great leader. Similar in this au Leo would be great at communication either gaining support for his cause (keeping his brother alive, the rebellion once he’s in it) to take that away from him will hurt.

Same this with taking his hearing. He can speak but he can’t get any information or ideas. He can’t even hear himself and his volume. He can tell people his ideas but he had no clue what has already been stated. This plays into Leo’s insecurities well. To him the plan is obvious so someone else, someone better, had to have already suggested it. He’s the fool that’s been tortured by the capital, everyone else here is so much stronger then him. (Remember 13 has a belief that death is better then betrayal seeing the rescued victors as the greatest cowards and traitors, they are going to feed into this mind set)

Red ear sliders are already heard of hearing so it could play well into that

To take his sight means he can’t plan. Not with out a topography map. He will need someone to verbally explain the field to him instead of being able to see it himself. While he can communicate fine he’s not at a significant disadvantage. With training I’m sure he could learn to fight again, but would he be allowed to? Would anyone listen to the plans of a blind man?

It provides a very unique opportunity for his loved ones to support him. He doesn’t know the layout of 13 at all, someone going to have to help him find his way. In meetings I could see Usagi whispering the map layout to him. If Leo does suggest a plan no one’s going to take him seriously without backing from Raph or Usagi. (Again this will play into insecurities and build tension between him and his loved ones as he gets frustrated with being led everywhere and having people think he’s incompetent now that he can’t see)

They are all super interesting ideas that I would love to play with I just need to pick one.

Mona

No matter how it goes down I think everyone rushes in to see their newly returned prisoners. Casey runs to Cassandra so happy to see his mom/sister (still deciding) she is not well.

Usagi’s and the brothers are looking around desperately, but it’s Usagi who hears Leo first. He and Leo get a desperate hug in before his brother catch up.

Leo doesn’t want to leave Usagi. Usagi kept his promise. When it came down to it he got Raph out alive. Leo trust him completely (this is important because I feel like he was just surrounded by 13 medical staff that remind him way to much of his torturers in the capital, but also Usagi has felt like a failure because Leo didn’t get out. He felt like he betrayed him by leaving him behind, even though Usagi could do nothing to save Leo at the time)

Raph leaves the group to go see Mona and she viciously attacks him.

Leo hears or sees the commotion and has Usagi help him over there. (He’s defiantly weak from the torture and starvation)

When they get the Mona calms at the sight of Leo. Before panicking and trying to get to him. He’s surrounded by bad people and he’s been her one form of comfort for a while now.

No bodies happy with it but Leo’s able to calm her down (maybe one of them gets hit by a guard who is trying to control Mona?)

Mona also realizes that Leo can’t speak/hear/see and loses it again thinking that district 13 and specifically Raph did this to him (“how could you let this happen to your little brother?!? You’re more of a monster then I thought!”)

Mona doesn’t want Leo to leave and he stays with her while the other try and figure out what is wrong with Mona

But yes while I’m always down for taking a limb I think for Leo it’s better to be one of those three. (It’s also a play on see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil)

Oh my gosh your right! 😲 I literally didn't think about that whenever I watched the movie! As much as he gets on raph for staying hidden, Leo strait up reveals himself to a human, if the Nightwatcher were one. Leo you hypocrite! 😂 you'd think he'd be harder on Mikey for having a job that literally is around humans all day. And the only thing protecting Mikey’s identity is his party mask. And that looks kinda easy to take off, plus he's around kids who are rough. And why was Leo so against the Nightwatcher anyway? I mean, yeah, he was fighting crime illegally. But he was catching more criminals and saving people than the cops were. Also on that note, why did splinter make their whole team pause on fighting crime while Leo was away? Sure Leo was the leader, but that could have given Raphael a chance to see how well he would do as a replacement. Like a test to see how he would do if anything happened to lwo or splinter, and maybe he would have gotten his anger under control sooner.

Right? Very hypocritical.

I feel like Leo can't be hard on Mikey, he's protective but I think Leo treats him softly, having that eldest/youngest 'must baby them' effect. So he might say something like "Hey Mikey, be careful with your job. Or get a new job" But he'd probably leave it at that and not talk to harshly about it with him.

Moving to Mikey's job. Yep he only wears a mask, and it looks easy to take or fall off. And he doesn't even wear a body suit. I feel like if you were really up close, you could probably tell it wasn't a suit....Although maybe I wouldn't. Would it be one of those things, where if you think it's a suit, your mind makes you believe they are wearing a suit? Kids might not notice, too busy beating him with sticks. But what about the parents when he goes to take payment. Maybe they just think it's a skin tight suit? Or does he just not get close enough, or stay long enough for them to notice? I feel like if you were really close to him you would probably get a feeling something wasn't quite right.

I'm going to link this to point out a human does find him suspicious. But he's able to play it off. Would this guy go home thinking, man I was stupid to think that was a real giant turtle. Or would he think, I SWEAR THAT WAS A GIANT TURTLE!

Anyway, I'm ranting. Moving on.

Nightwatcher may be a vigilante, stopping crime illegally. But technically aren't the turtles also doing that? They aren't cops, and they stop bad guys. Maybe Leo feels jealous the Nightwatcher is doing such good work, or feels envious. Maybe he feels bad because he left and it meant someone else had to swoop in and save the city. Maybe he feels guilty for leaving, so he's taking that guilt out on the Nightwatcher. Maybe he feels protective of the city and doesn't want someone else doing his job and wants the Nightwatcher to stop so he can get back into stopping the bad guys.

Also yes. Why did Splinter make them stop? Was it because he feels like they are stronger together, and wants them to all fight together? In that case, shouldn't he have sent all of them away? Why separate them?

Perhaps he didn't like his children fighting crime. Maybe he felt they were in danger when the fought bad guys, so he made them stop to try and keep them safe. But then if he wanted his kids safe, why would he send Leo out all alone?

I absolutely agree that they should have given Raph a chance. Yes it's great having a leader. But you can always use a second in command, someone that can learn to do leader stuff just in case they have to step up. Maybe if Splinter told Raph to take the leader role, Raph never would have made up the Nightwatcher. He might have stayed home and trained with his brothers to prove himself.

Splinter definitely should have given Raph a chance. But I also think Leo should have never left, or they should have all gone together. But then things would have been completely different and we would have a different movie.

I've spent the last week or so re-learning how much I love Of Monsters and Men, and I keep replaying King and Lionheart - and because you keep telling us to not leave you alone with music, I'm going to Of Course ask your opinion on this song as like a Leo and Leon thing or even a Leon and Raph thing (mostly cuz Leon means lion and I'm a sucker for symbolism, lol)

1) Curse you the plot bunnies are multiplying

2) I have a new favourite song that I will use a lot for plot ideas.

3) This does fit Leo/Leon very well. To me, this gives off a vibe of mirrors. As in, two people who share the same admiration for their older brothers, but in different context. Both Leo and Leon admire their Raph a lot.

Leo and Raph fits better than Leo and Leon.

As each verse passes, it gives me the feeling that both sliders look up to their Raph as the "king" while they're the "lion heart". It plays into their roles. Raph is the leader. The "king". He is grand and great. Admirable, amazing, noble, kind, and everything a great king is.

Meanwhile Leon/Leo are "lion heart". The lion, in the same, is referring to their fighting spirit. The warrior in them. The heart is self explanatory. I'm a sucker Leon/Leo being the "hope" of the group.

The story I'm getting is a sort of "reflection" thing. As both sliders admire their Raph.

Leon looks up to Raph as his big brother. The leader. The one who protects them when they do their shenanigans. Their big brother. Like a kind king who looks after his people in times of peace.

Leo looks up to Raph the same way, only this time it is in a world ravaged by war. His Raph had to step up to lead, not only his brothers, but more people to win a fight they might not win. Like a king leading an army in a war.

So that's my take on the song. Hopefully this is what you wanted to hear!

Reconnecting (Epilogue)

Every color has several meanings depending on who you ask. Generally, red is associated with things such as anger or danger. Orange can be associated with optimism and energy, blue with intuition and inspiration, yellow with happiness and hope, and so on. However, when one thinks of loneliness and independence, they normally wouldn’t think purple, would they? Colors are generally a matter of expressing personality, and these four brothers are a great example of this. These brothers, however, aren’t your average brothers. They’re ninjas. Man-sized turtle ninjas. They got their names from Renaissance artists, as decided by their sensei.

Leonardo sports a blue mask and wields dual katana. He is the family’s battle strategist. Raphael wears red and uses sais; he may have a temper, but he helps his family out of their issues. Michelangelo is the family’s medic. Regardless of whether or not he’s studied medicine, he knows what should and shouldn’t be seen with injuries. He wears an orange mask and uses nunchucks. Finally, the leader of the pack, Donatello. He is highly intelligent, as he works with technology. He dons a purple mask and wields the traditional bo staff. He has distanced himself from his family for years, and it only seems to be getting truer with the passing of time.

Of course, all ninjas have their sensei or master. This is also true with the turtle boys. Their leader is named Splinter. He was once a human, but ended up being mutated into a rat. He’s a master of ninjutsu and, when they were young, taught his sons to train in the arts as well. While their training is rough and tedious, they always have time to develop their interests. The turtles also became friends with two human beings; high school students named Casey Jones and April O'Neil.

April becomes the turtles’ first friend after a bit of hesitation from Master Splinter. She, in her spare time, studies botany. She can be very enthusiastic when she hears anyone talking about her interests. She has orange hair and is usually seen wearing pretty much any yellow shirt one could think of. April spent many years with her found family in the turtles and learned how to defend herself during that time. Master Splinter trained her in the ninja arts for her to become a kunoichi, a female ninja, so that she doesn’t have to depend on anyone else to protect her.

Casey is somewhat of a loner at school. He doesn’t really have many friends outside of his hockey teammates. He’s very intelligent, but he prefers not to show it. He’s got street smarts and book smarts. Casey’s style is closer to a skater boy aesthetic, and as mentioned before, he plays hockey for the school. He tends to get distracted by street fights in the middle of hockey games and takes off to stop them. He uses his hockey mask as his disguise and his hockey stick as his weapon of choice. 

The day was July 8th, and it was Michelangelo’s fifth birthday. Like his brothers, he would be receiving his weapon from his father at the end of the day. While he slept, his brothers gathered in the main living area of the lair to set up the surprise party for their younger brother.

“I can’t believe the day is finally here, guys!”

“Well, do not forget that today is Mikey’s day, Raph,” Donnie tells his elder brother.

“C’mon, Donnie, have a little more fun. You know how Mikey is, all he wants is to have a little fun on his birthday!” Leo said.

“You know how Donnie is, Leo… everything has to be set up ‘perfect’ or ‘nothing will go right’,” Raph sighs. Donnie, frustrated, goes quiet, knowing that Raphael was right. He knows he tries to make every little thing stick to a schedule or protocol. He has every minute of every family event planned out and doesn’t just “go with the flow” of things. Leo, Raph and Mikey make the most of every moment of their lives and enjoy themselves, like kids should. Donnie, however, does not. 

He was given the responsibility of leading his brothers through life at a young age. Splinter realized that Donatello was gifted with extreme intelligence and he was able to pick up learned abilities much quicker than his brothers. He gave the responsibility of leadership to his second youngest son. While leadership may be a huge title for someone at such a young age, Splinter knows that Donnie can handle it thanks to his ability to make the right decisions.

Donatello walks into his room and begins packing up a small robot he had made for Michelangelo. He proceeds to look over at his work table and pick up a small device he had been working on.

“They think I’m no fun? I can be fun…” he thought. He places the device on the inside of his shell and turns it on as he walks out his room with Mikey’s present.

Donnie goes back into the main area with his elder brothers. He places his gift for Michelangelo next to the table. As he does, Splinter comes out of his room with his extravagantly decorated gift for his youngest. He places his gift next to his chair and sits down.

“I’m gonna go wake Mikey up!” Leonardo shakes his arms happily.

“Leo, wait! Shouldn’t we wait for April?” Raphael questions. “But pancakes, Raph. With sprinkles. And whipped cream,” Leo bounces as his eyes shine brighter with each ingredient he mentions. Raph pauses for a second, looks at his younger brother and grins.

“Let’s go get Mikey!” he shouts as he runs off with Leo. Donnie also smiles and runs off to the kitchen to get his baby brother’s birthday breakfast.

“Wait for me guys!” he exclaims, following Leo and Raph as they exchange glances as if to say “he changed quick.” The three eldest run to Michelangelo’s room, breakfast in tow, to wake him up for his birthday surprise. Raph turns the light on as Leo and Donnie jump on the bed next to their kid brother.

“Happy Birthday, Mike!” they shout, as he wakes up. Leo places a birthday hat on his head, Donnie hands him his breakfast, and Raph hugs him. The young turtle, after he’s fully woken up, smiles and hugs his brothers.

“Thanks, you guys! You’re the best!” he giggles as Donnie checks his glucose patch.

“Of course! Also, you’re free to eat your breakfast. Your sugar level is fine, and we used low sugar ingredients for yours!” Mikey gasps after his purple clad brother tells him this and proceeds to eat his breakfast.

“We’ll meet you in the living room, Mikey! Just come join us when you’re ready!” Raph smiles and leaves his room, Leo and Donnie following. Mikey looks at his pictures from his other birthdays and smiles as he eats his breakfast. After he finishes, he goes into the living room with the rest. He gets comfy on his bean bag chair as the family hears some footsteps climbing down into the lair. They turn their heads to see a small human girl climbing down. The boys cheer upon their friend joining them. “Welcome, Miss O’Neil. Happy you could join us,” Splinter smiles at her.

“Hi, sensei! Glad you invited me!” April grins. “Happy birthday, Miguelito!” She smiles as she hugs Mikey as he thanks her. She places her gift bag next to the rest of them as she sits with the other boys. “Hi guys!” “Hey April!” Leo smiles.

“What’s up?!” Raph grins.

“Greetings, friend,” Donnie spoke. “Shall we begin the gift giving?”

“I want dad’s first!” Mikey spoke excitedly. “I want my weapon now, I wanna know what it is!” Splinter chuckles at his excitement.

“You must be patient, Michelangelo. You know your weapon is the final gift you receive, just like your brothers before you,” he spoke quietly, receiving an awe in disappointment from Mikey. Raphael hands his baby brother his present, being a new set of watercolor cakes and watercolor paper. Michelangelo giggles with excitement. Watercolors are his favorite painting medium because, as he says, “I don’t have to mix colors to get different shades, I just have to change how much water to mix with the paint.” Next, Leonardo hands Mikey his present. When he opens it, he finds a bunch of vintage action figures.

“I found those just kinda… laying around where they were dropped down here. Cleaned ‘em up for you and thought you might like them the most out of all of us!” he smiles. He receives a hug from Mikey as well as many thanks. Donatello’s present for Michelangelo was a cooking set, including a mini oven he built himself. The excitement on Michelangelo’s face brought a smile to Donnie’s face, knowing his brother can now make his own recipes for desserts that won’t mess with his diabetes.

“Miguel! Here!” April said excitedly. “I got you something too!” She hands Mikey his present and he opens it. “I got you some knee pads and shoulder pads because you’re a goofy lil guy and you’re kinda clumsy and I don't want you to hurt yourself because I love you guys so much and-” she just squeals. Splinter just chuckles, “Thank you, April. You're a very kind, young lady.”

“Your present papa!” Mikey says with the most adorable sparkling eyes. “I’m ready for my weapon!” The ninja master smiles at his youngest son and stands up, using his cane for leverage.

“Of course, Michelangelo,” he picked up the box and carried it to the small turtle. He sits next to him and hands him the box. Mikey proceeded to open the box and his eyes lit up in excitement.

“Nunchucks?! Awesome!” He picks one up and swings it around, nearly hitting himself in the head, only for Splinter to block it in time.

“Careful, my son. Those nunchaku are a challenge to learn, but I fully believe you can do it. They take a lot of focus to control properly.”

“So, sensei, why exactly do we have the weapons that we do?” Donnie asks the rat.

“The weapons I assigned to you boys are opposite to your personalities to keep balance. Raphael, you are the most… chaotic, in the best way. Your sai are weapons of defense instead of giving you power to be destructive. Leonardo, you are possibly the most level headed, and the one I trust most to not harm innocents with the powerful katana. Donatello, your powerful and highly intelligent brain is wonderful for creating your own weapons, but a simple weapon can take just as much brain power to use. Michelangelo, you seem to be the least focused, but that does not affect your intelligence. Nunchaku, as I said already, requires a lot of focus to use. Your childlike nature requires something to help your ability to focus.” The boys look at their weapons in thought of what Splinter said.

“Will I get a weapon someday, sensei?” April asked Splinter.

“That decision is not mine to make, my dear. It is your parents' choice on whether you are trained as a kunoichi and trained to use a powerful weapon.” The young girl seemed disappointed, knowing her parents wouldn’t allow her to learn to fight. Raphael hugs her and picks her up, laughing.

“That doesn’t mean we can’t still play!” he says as April starts giggling. All of the kids get up and go to play while Master Splinter supervises them. Of course, being mostly boys, the kids begin roughhousing a bit, Mikey especially as he’s trying out his new weapons. Donnie somewhat trains his younger brother as he learns his weapon. Raph, April and Leo are running around playing tag, or as they call it, “ninja tag.” 

During the mini training session with Michelangelo and Donatello, Donatello miscalculated Michelangelo’s swing, causing Mikey to hit the miniscule machine on his elder brother’s shell. The machine short circuits, shocking Donnie in the process. He yelps a bit, causing his family to look at him and prompting Mikey to apologize profusely.

“Donnie, I-I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to, I promise! I-I’m still learni-” Michelangelo gets cut off by his brother.

“Stop it, Mikey! I-I should have left the teaching to Dad, I shouldn’t have taken this on myself!” Donnie raised his voice, “No one listens to anything I say, anyways! I’m always the bad guy, the party pooper, the stick in the mud, whatever! Why should I try to lead you guys if you don’t pay attention?!” Donnie storms off to his lab, Mikey tearing up. His birthday party had been ruined, and he felt as if it was his fault.

“Oh Donnie messed up making Mikey cry! I’ll show him!” April begins walking to the laboratory as Leo and Raph comfort Mikey, but Splinter stops her.

“I understand the frustration, April, but we should not escalate the situation any further. Yelling at Donatello will only cause this to get worse. Give him some time to calm himself.”

“But he yelled at Mikey! And on his birthday! I don’t know what got into Donnie all of a sudden, sensei, but I don’t like it.” Splinter sighs in response, “I am also unsure. I can only hope he learns to properly filter his anger sooner rather than later. I hope he learns to be a kid and enjoy himself. I cannot force him to stop taking everything as seriously as if it were the end of the world, but I wish he learns this ability soon. And to not take his brothers for granted…”

Tmnt 2k3 character study: Raph

Raph is more than his temper.

I’m tired of his whole personality being reduced to “angry” and "rebellious". (Seriously those 2014 live actions making him want to leave his family behind make me so angry)

Besides Mikey, Raph is the most emotive turtle. He wears his heart on his sleeve! He is like never not showing people exactly how he’s feeling. (Mikey says it, he shows it) Raph is all about action, words are not his thing, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have anything valuable to say. (Heck even Raph can and has given great words of advise, so its just that he prefers action to words)

His default mode is defensive and protective. When they start to get overwhelmed in a fight, and Leo orders a retreat, he is always the last one to make a move. He stands his ground as a shield, his burning drive to keep his family safe always his first action. 

He is quick to recognize and sympathize with others with tempers (Casey and Leatherhead) and as the show goes on, he gets better handle on his temper, learns to slow down before acting, and is quick to apologize. He knows when's he’s wrong and owns it. 

In the early seasons, he is much quicker to anger but as the events they live through progress, he actually matures not gets worse. (Leo took care of that little arc lol). Seeing how he behaved during the "Good Genes" episodes, is just proof enough. 

They are hard to miss, but the subtle things he does throughout the show shows are caring and thoughtful person he is. He’s quick to have his brothers backs, however can get tunnel vision during fights to protect them. 

He has this whole “macho” mindset so he doesn't cry often but he doesn't try to play it off either. He knows when to be gentle, even if that gentleness can still come off kinda gruff.

Take "Lone Raph and Cub". He helps this kid out because again, he can sympathize and recognize himself in this kid. He's talking softer, treats the kid with respect while still treating him his age, and even forms a team with him to get his mom back. Dudes great with kids.

His dynamic with Mikey is also so special. They feed off each other during fights and missions and get along so well. Their love language is insults and teasing, yet they always put that to the back burner when its time to be serious and they are a strong duo. So no, he doesn't hate Mikey, they are actually best friends.

Heck even with Leo, there are very few times when he doesn't listen to him. He recognizes Leo's role and wisdom, often deferring to him.

It's when he gets to emotional and needs to act that they butt heads. It isn't that Leo isn't one to take action, he just does it differently than Raph likes to do it. Quick and passionately.

Again, his driving force is to protect his family, and the more time lost is not getting them back safe is stressful to Raph. (Again you see his growth in "Good Genes" in listening to Leo and remaining pretty calm)

He knows his stenghts and weaknesses, and especially knows when to ask for help. These boys have only ever had each other. They know at the end of the day, its them against the world. Yeah they have Splinter, April and Casey, but the bond they have is so drastically different and special.

He also constantly turns to Donnie for help, relying on and trusting his brothers expertise. He also constantly shows his appreciation for Donnies work. Their relationship is much calmer than with Mikey and Leo.

Point is Raph can be a hothead but his character is so much deeper than that. He's the turtle that shows his love for his family with protective action.

Leo may be the leader, Donnie the brains and Mikey the calming force of the family, but Raph is the heart.

He keeps them together, keeps them whole and most importantly keeps them safe. Raph is an empathy and you can't change my mind.

Nobody necessarily asked for these but it’s been a meh few days and I figured I’d write some shit to keep busy (a little stuck on request but a bih is managing)

So I give you, some random headcanons for the guys

Michelangelo

I like to think that this orange lad while the fun type of bf that has you in stitches nearly every minute, has his serious moments

Similar to Don he’s painfully aware that he isn’t normal and while he can be somewhat vain that boy has got some self conscious thoughts running through him all day. Especially with his s/o

That gives way to some depressive episodes 🥺 (hug him pls)

He’s the second best cook of the four (Raph being 1st place) but he’s the best baker though.

Loves being competitive in games with Raph but enjoys playing co-op more with Donnie

The only time you can catch him really concentrating is when he draws. Boy really gets lost in it. Goes without mentioning, yes he draws his s/o and has gifted them some pretty dope ass pieces

Heaviest sleeper, a bomb can go off. You’ve often almost violently shake him which leads to Grumpy Groggy Mikey™️ and he complains cause on the random days he manages to be up before you boy wakes you up super soft and sweetly

Besides Donnie he’s got seniority when it comes to picking the playlist they use for doing chores.

As I’ve stated and will die on that hill: Touch is his love language. He still likes to snuggle up to his bros or give them hugs. He’s basically attached to the hip with his s/o.

Fancies himself a bit of a style icon

He remembers perfectly the firsts: first kiss, first time, first fight, first makeup, first everything

Him and Raph are the dynamic duo but Mikey loves being coddled by Leo because big brother and littlest brother™️

But he feels most comfortable talking about unusual or somewhat embarrasing things with Donnie cause he always hits him with the “yes it’s perfectly normal because *long winded biology esplanation*”

Doesn’t like to cry in front of his brother but breaks apart with Splinter

He Loves™️ the sound of his name when it comes out of his s/o’s mouth. In every sense of the word, angry, happy, surprised, lustful etc

Donatello

Being a genius has its perks but man can it have its downsides.

He’s just ridiculously aware and that leads to many thoughts and those thoughts can turn very negative

He gets depressed pretty easily but he’s got that Keep on Keep Going attitude towards it. His s/o can catch on pretty quickly and there’s a struggle to reach him when his head is too clouded.

He is the Fix It type in all sense of the words. So he’s the bf that will listen to your problems and he’ll try and find a way around it to help you or at least give out a better point of view.

Which means he’s a great listener, like seriously he loves talking and he rambles but he loves when you do too

Loves to be caressed honestly. If his s/o runs a hand down his arms or thigh, if they caress his cheek or run a thumb across his lips.

He reads all manner of things tbh, from repair manuals to romance novels

Goes without saying, gamer boi. He loves doing mods, always wants to play on expert mode, smart sarcastic burns when he’s playing online and somebody is being an insensitive prick

He’s actually a really good sexter. He’s nervous physically cause self image issues but with reassurance etc he gets lowkey cocky

No necessarily the best cook but he’s not bad either. He does like to make you breakfast in bed.

Serotonin hiiiiigh when they bring him coffee

He loves late night drives, usually takes a Raph with him but once he gets his s/o it’s the two of you driving around New York. One some ocassions Raph tags along too

While they get along pretty good, him and Leo can butt heads a lot. It’s not a dick measuring contest like Leo and Raph. They just argue and Donnie gets a smart mouth and Leo well he can be a dick.

Regardless they make up pretty fast.

Leonardo

He’s got a smidge of OCD. He’s very particular of keeping things in a particular order that he knows and nobody really understands but it makes him happy.

Expert folder of clothing so everyone rejoices when it’s his turn to do laundry cause that mofo does some orgami like shit to everyone’s boxers

He reminds everyone to eat fruit and veggies, can’t be pizza every night

Yes he can be a hardass but he’s honestly an absolute softie with those he loves. He’s very attentive with everyone’s needs, especially Splinter

Rooftop star gazing, he likes to decompress and sometimes that means going somewhere by himself. When coupled up he loves doing this with his s/o and it’s a nice way to get some time to themselves

Listen Leo is boyfriend material, he’s husband material. It’s stupid how perfect he is when it comes to being someone’s partner. He remembers the little things like really dumb things that always guts his s/o.

He’s thought about if anything were to happen to him he’d want Raph to step up. Even if they argue and bicker and fight he knows Raph would set the world on fire if it meant protecting his loved ones.

Is learning Japanese and he so wants to see it someday. Has gotten pretty good at speaking it but reading it is still a little hard.

Has snuck into a flower shop after hours to get you a bouquet, it’s cool he leaves the money on the counter

When Casey and April had their first Big Fight™️ and she showed up and started bawling, everyone thought Raph was gonna end Casey but in reality it was Leo, that boy was seething if Donnie hadn’t played mediator it was gonna be ugly

Leo hates to see somebody he loves cry cause somebody was just being an ass

He loves game night and movie night

While he takes his leader duties seriously this boy will sleep away a day away. He’s tired af get him a blanket pls.

Raphael

Grumpy boi lives to exercise and lift weights but he does have other things he enjoys. He loves sneaking out an making his away around the city from rooftop to rooftop

As stated, best cook in the fam. This man takes pride in that. So as his s/o trust me you’re gonna be well fed

Although he will never admit he can’t fall a sleep without you like once y’all start dating and sleeping over he needs you there.

Mikey gets on his last nerve but Christ if anyone messes with him. Raph is ripping their necks. That’s his boy, he’ll always protect him, which is why whenever Leo starts going on Dad Mode he always sides with his little bro.

Sure he’s got his anger issues but honestly he’s probably one of the most sentimental of his brothers. So yeah cry angry but he’s just a ball of emotions and he doesn’t know how to manage them sometimes but he’s trying

He’s protective of Mikey but lord is he protective of April. Like honestly he gave Casey the big brother ‘if you break her heart I’m breaking ya neck’ speech and he fucking means it

Also, he’s really close with April. Those two are always talking and goofing about. He sees her as that little sister (or more so big sister) and he likes having a sister.

He’s super close with Donnie, they’ve often felt like outcast in their own ways. Raph likes helping out, he’s pretty handy.

If Rise of the TMNT wasn’t cancelled...

Had the series not been cancelled after season 2, which itself was trimmed down, how or what would have liked to see develop further in the series. Reblog with your own wants and here are mine.

-the development of leo as the new leader and the adjustment to all the turtles, especially raph, that it causes. Also maybe they could delve more into learning about the hamato clan and learn more from its ways, strengthening their battle discipline.

-as for the main villain, I think the shredder period has wrapped up nicely and passed. Continued threats from big mama, baxter stockboy and other’s would be good but based on the upcoming Netflix movie, the rising threat of krang would likely be possible. To me though, I think the best recurring baddies should continue to be the now directionless foot Lieutenant and foot brute who, in my eyes, have been perfectly set up to become the new versions of bebop and rocksteady. now mutants, they could reform and command what remains of the foot and just be out for general chaos or revenge on the turtles

-growth for april; not just as a fighter but as  more of an adult, maybe finally landing a steady job and it would be fun to see some of her home life. Maybe we see that her joining with karai’s spirit has left an impact on her. I would also like to hold off on any friendship, or to others possible romance, between her and casey for a while. I much prefer the idea of them maintaining their rivalry/animosity from S2 and it being a slow build to trust.

-on that note, I would like to see casey as a true flawed vigilante like the character usually starts as. She may not be evil anymore but is still intense, overzealous, excitable and reckless. I mean her in a hockey mask screaming like she does would be terrifying. I’d like to see her as a very violent and over-enthusiastic rogue that the turtles have to at times keep in line or curb her violent tendencies. Like other series, it would also be fun to see maybe her and raph bond and maybe go on one or two of their own spotlight adventures.

-splinter went through great development in S2, so as long as he maintains that he’s good. Would be interesting though to see him develop his spiritual side, possibly communicating with karai or even his mother.

-ditch Baron Draxum; he was a compelling bad guy with a fun history with the turtles/splinters past, but after S1 he just wasn’t interesting anymore. He lost any enjoyment, to me at least, after he became a hobo and reluctant good guy. Just have him go back to the yokai to answer for his crimes and don’t bring him back.

-as for episodes, I’d like to see the turtles take on a few less extraordinary threats, like crime bosses or terrorists, or the purple dragon becoming an actual gang, just to mix it up a bit. Some more eps to spotlight some of my fav background characters like DIGG, Sunita, frankenfoot, Gentry, Piebald. Maybe an ep where mona lisa is introduced, giving us a story where the turtles all vie for her romantic interest. Also, like both the 03 and 2012 series have done, I’d like an ep where one character gets thrown into a dark twisted possible future as well. i do want the shredder to remain a presence in some compacity so the creation of the cyber shredder like in the 03 series would be interesting. And of course there always should be a confrontation with dark, twisted evil versions of the turtles.

-seeing some unmade S2 eps done would be good, like I would love to see the planned flashback ep where we see when and how april and the turtles met. It would also be very interesting to see the planned ep that addresses the idea of a fifth turtle; whether that’s slash or venus or jennika, who knows(but i prefer venus). Another maybe could be the eps where april’s friend dale was gonna turn into a werewolf or more lore that was gonna be revealed about mayhem and the hidden city.

-would also like to see some of my fav characters not in the series introduced, primarily leatherhead, alopex and triceratons(at least zom, zog or traximus).

Meet the Main Cast of TMNT: New World Mutants!

I received these very kind asks about my version of TMNT, and i’m finally getting around to answering them! @sirwolficus-art​ @dianounais​

So! Mutations and meetings first!

When Splinter met the boys, they were human kids living on the streets of NYC as a group, scavenging for food and making trouble. He had an instant soft spot for them but knew he couldn’t properly house them. Instead, he kept an sharp eye on them and bought them fresh food whenever he could.

One day, Splinter came across the boys in the middle of a street fight with a group of older kids. They weren’t faring particularly well, so Splinter stepped in and scared off the bullies, ushering them into a nearby pet shop to talk to them. While there, they took interest in the baby turtles and played with them for a while. Mikey explained to Splinter that they were fighting over food. Splinter offered to take them out for a proper meal when the chaos calmed down outside, something they happily took him up on.  

Unfortunately, on their way to a diner, they were approached by a threatening stranger carrying a couple canisters of glowing green chemical. They attacked, and though Splinter did his best to defend the boys (ultimately hurting the stranger enough to scare them off), at the last moment they managed to throw the ooze onto them. Boom, mutation!

Donatello!

Donatello is the eccentric of his brothers. He’s the embodiment of pure chaotic neutral and will blow up a Chili’s just to see what happens. (Think Rise Donnie without the ego) He’s an outspoken, highly opinionated drama queen, but has a quiet confidence about his actual intellect. More often he’ll show his family something he’s made with excitement rather than arrogance. His skills lie mainly in hacking, but he’s also a gifted engineer. He’s an absolute genius but a total dumb ass about everything else.

He LOVES science fiction and is 100% convinced aliens are real, and the thing that mutated them. None of his brothers belive him, but they tolerate his rambling conspiracy theories to various degrees.

Despite being the oldest of his brothers at 17, he is by far the least mature. He often focuses too much on his projects and doesn’t take anything else nearly as seriously. He swears like a sailor and the hardest for Splinter to get to train. He is a red eared slider.

Leonardo!

Like his father, Leonardo came up in a heavily traditional Japanese culture. He grew up learning ninjutsu from his birth parents (more on that in later posts ;)), and though he is now separated from them, he still values the culture. He takes his training very seriously, and though he can sometimes come off a stoic or emotionless, he is very much capable of being just as silly and fun loving as his brothers. He just has his own way of showing it. If you pay attention, he laughs the most at his brothers antics; it’s just quiet.

In fact, he is selectively mute thanks to his severe voice dysphoria. He is a trans boy and it’s the thing he struggles with the most; so he often just doesn’t speak. Instead, he signs to his family and used common mannerisms and gestures to communicate. He will only speak when he feels it totally necessary.

Despite being the youngest at 15, he’s always been the natural leader of his brothers; even before meeting splinter and becoming mutated. He just naturally falls into the role, and his brothers don’t object. He is a red eared slider.

Raphael!

Raph, along with Mikey (his bio twin) is 16. He loves to scrap and fight and be strong, and often underestimates his physical strength in training. But it’s never mal intended, he just shows affection with his actions rather than words and the language he speaks best is physical. He aims to be strong enough to give the BEST hugs.

He has his fair share of hissy fits, though, due to some unresolved sensitivity that can turn into anger if left unchecked. He doesn’t get angry often, but when he does he REALLY gets angry. Sometimes to the point of intentional malicious harm towards his brothers until he’s able to calm down. His biggest fear is seriously or permanently hurting his family, so he does his best to quell his anger.

He loves to cook, especially pizza (he takes a lot of pride in his homemade pizza dough, something he’s perfected for many years) and his favorite thing is to make food for his family. He is a box turtle.

Michelangelo!

Mikey is also 16, but despite his young age he is the most emotionally mature of his brothers. He’s very chill, down for whatever. He’s great at reading others and will find a way to make friends with anyone. He jokes around a lot, but he know the exact way to listen to, console and then cheer up every member of his family.

He’s highly sociable and loves to go out in the daylight and explore NYC whenever he can. He’ll often drag one or all of his bros with him. He is a literal ray of sunshine, and is immediately friends with everyone he meets. Unless he gets Bad Vibes™ from someone. If Mikey doesn’t like someone, it’s a definite sign they’re bad news bears.

He loves to yoyo, and spends almost as much time on the hobby as he does on his art. He is a box turtle.

Master Splinter!

Splinter is a patient, soft and caring father. He loves his sons to the ends of the earth and would do anything to protect them. Perhaps a tad over protective at times, but a loving father above all else. That is, except for in the dojo. He takes his teaching very seriously, and while he is still patient with the boys, he is very tough love when it comes to ninjutsu. He places a very high value on the culture he came from and expects his sons to honor it to the same level.

He is a very young father, currently only 36 and 28 when he was mutated (along with his sons). He’d always intended on adopting a kid or two when he was old enough to support them, but was very much thrown into fatherhood when they were all mutated. His Dad Instincts™ kicked into high gear, and there was no question in his mind that these were his kids now. He sometimes struggles with being a young father to four teens, but he wouldn’t trade his life now for anything.

Due to his rat mutation, he is severally color blind and now considered legally blind. His vision only got increasingly worse over the years, so he can no longer see what Leo is signing. Instead, one of the other turtles will speak for him or Leo will tap morose code to him if he wants to communicate. It’s tough, but they do their best.

my rewrite of tmnt 2012 is turning more into “my fan iteration within the story of 2012 which i change a bit to suit my self-indulgence” (which it pretty much was from the start but hey) so i’m just gonna write down some General Stuff abt it like arcs and stuff

Tang Shen is alive but did get sliced by Shredder like when she dies in canon, so she has scars and Shredder believes her to be dead. Tang Shen also believes that Yoshi went and disappeared on her when he went to buy those turtles so, you know, rough couple of years for her w/ regards to thinking her infant daughter is dead, moving away from japan w/ her husband, and then her husband mutates into a rat and doesn’t tell her abt it. now she works as a robotics engineer at Stockman labs and while she’s still depressed she’s getting better, she likes her work, and she’s working on a certain nanobot project which is going good

(Nano is in this version but they instead are in an arcade cabinet that the turtles then bring to the Lair so that Nano has a family and they get to play with the turtles often. Happy end for Nano!)

Raph is the one who first meets Shen and Shen starts signing the adoption papers for the turtles

Splinter is pretty much the same as in 2012 but like, he gets confronted abt his shit instead of just being Flawless Wise Mentor, mainly by Michelangelo and then Shen when she meets him again. think he’s still gonna die but only once instead of. what. three times?

the turtles have known April for about three years since they went to the surface in secret and met a curious human girl. April quickly decided she has four brothers now and they agreed whole-heartedly

April’s parents are both alive btw and very good parents, though since “the Kraang want to kidnap April” isn’t a thing here they are both unaware of her mutant friends

April isn’t trained as a kunoichi and instead relies on her telepathic powers, which would grow at the same rate as the turtles become better fighters. i have a whole list of her powers and their limits - for example, tinfoil hats do work to keep your head protected from telepathy, much to everyone’s surprise. a metal pot also works, or a metal helmet. Shredder is unknowingly immune to it with his helmet always being on...

the brain worms serve a slightly bigger role, but they are instead creatures from Dimension X, a weak, telepathic parasite that crawls into people’s brains and controls them to keep the worm safe while it feeds on the person. they are what Kraang Prime mutated himself with to create the Kraang hivemind. they are also called “mind maggots” in Dimension X, “brain worms” is just what Stockman and Donnie started calling them when first discovered. removing a brain worm from a person without using telepathic powers can result in the person’s death or severe brain damage

also the Kraang are a more literal hivemind. if one of them sees you, they all see you. the turtles have to use all their ninja stealth to deal with them, and it’s always a risk because the Kraang can easily overwhelm them with how many of them there are

Kraang Prime is probably gonna be offed at the end of the “season 1 finale”, probably by Leatherhead. he deserves it. offing Prime also frees the Kraang hivemind from his control and the Utrom have their autonomy back. either that, or they manage to release the hivemind from his control another way, and it leaves Prime like weak and useless somehow. maybe by plucking off those weird crystals on his head, i dunno, still thinking abt it

oh Leatherhead! Leatherhead is a doctor for mutants, being a bit of a mix between his 2003 and 2012 self. he wants to help other mutants since he knows they’re victims of the Kraang too, however indirectly, and that they can’t exactly get medical help. mutants do have greater regenerative properties, but that’s only going to help you so far, and your bones might grow back wrong quicker. so, Leatherhead spent his years of freedom studying medicine and mutant biology, using stuff he stole from the Kraang during his first escape.

it would be a lot more focused on helping mutants in general. like, there would still be mutant villains that would be fought when needed, but Mikey and Donnie would put their feet down and try to offer the mutants help in settling into their new life. the turtles would also not be disgusted with mutants like they are in 2012 like jeez, dumbdotcomm really put it into words

anyways the Kraang would cease being a threat after “season 1″ and the truce Karai suggests between Foot and Hamato does happen. Splinter hates it and doesn’t trust it at all

Baxter Stockman has his own lab which is pretty successful, and he is an incredibly smart and eccentric guy with a bubbly personality - until you threaten him or talk down to him, at which point he shows himself to be calculating and ruthless, still with a smile on his face. he doesn’t pick up on sarcasm very well, though, and if you ask him to explain something, he will happily do so in great detail, whether you’re friend or foe. also, he doesn’t get mutated into a fly, and he doesn’t get turned into just a brain, either. he’s just a funky regular human guy

Timothy becomes The Badger in this version. he’s also treated better by the turtles, especially Mikey who takes it upon himself to train Timothy, partially bc Mikey wants to be a superhero but knows he can’t show his face. in fact, Timothy was inspired by Mikey specifically as he saw Mikey trying to be a costumed superhero at one point. when Timothy mutates, he becomes a human mutant like Hun and Ravenwood from IDW, so he can become like an actual superhero with powers

more female characters. like just in general more girls please. i beg of you.

Angel is Casey’s older sister who’s off at college as a STEM student, and she is also Nobody here bc i absolutely love that for her, IDW was galaxy brained when they did that. Alopex is her partner here too same as in IDW, and they jokingly call themselves “Batteries, the Double-A Crime Fighting Duo”. Angel is very much against Casey being a vigilante despite being one herself, but she’s an adult so it’s different, obviously

the turtles ask Alopex to be their teacher, too, especially since Raph notices that she fights using anger in a controlled way, and she is a bit surprised and slightly awkward about it but she accepts. Alopex is an arctic fox instead of a red fox here btw, though she has a summer coat most of the time and only gets white fur during winter.

April would also have an arc where she strives to understand her mutant side and powers better, so she would venture into Dimension X alone to find the Utrom, and learns about their society before and after Kraang. Rook and Queen (named Quin here bc Bishop isn’t a Utrom in this version, and Utrom don’t have a concept of queens and kings) would have bigger roles, as they would help April out with her powers and figuring out what being part Utrom/Kraang means for her identity.

Rook is also an alchemist/scientist who created mutagen in the first place, and Kraang was her assistant. this isn’t super important to April’s arc but i just thought it’d throw it out there

the brain worms/mind maggots would result in a City Fall arc i’ve decided. but it would be the only time mind control/brainwashing becomes a plot point in this series bc i think 2012 really overused that trope. like it was there with Splinter and the Rat King, with the parasite wasp mutant episode, and then again with the brain worms but like, several times over.

this also means that Karai doesn’t get the brain worms pumped into her brain. remember that scene where she’s hooked up to the machine and Shredder’s like “damn that shit sucks i’m sorry Hamato Yoshi’s doing this to you”?? that scene was pretty fucked up. anyways Karai has like. agency in her own arc this time

in the City Fall arc Splinter would die and at the end Karai kills Shredder, and Leo and Karai as new leaders of the clans would be like “alright this stupid fucking ancestral cycle of vengeance” ends here

Northampton time after that because it would be a Lot

after that i think it would be space arc time? it would start with the turtles being separated across dimensions and planets a bit like when SAINW happened, but without SAINW. like, Donnie would get to Neutrino (elves with crazy hair version), Leo would get to Usagi’s dimension, etc. etc.

also in case it wasn’t obvious Tang Shen will play a big role as the turtles’ Better parent and she’d have her own stuff to work through, like meeting her daughter she thought was dead and finding out her boss, Stockman, is evil, that her husband got turned into a rat, and that her new kids get into all kinds of dangerous trouble constantly

anyways that’s um. already quite the wall of text so i’ll shut up now ‘til i have more art to post, digital art this time so you can like. actually see what things look like.

My favourite TMNT 2012 episodes (part 1)

I have been thinking writing about my favourite episodes for quite while now.Keep in mind this is not supposed to be a list of ¨ top best episodes¨ from tmnt 2012. There are many episodes that i think that are amazing but they don´t enter in my favourite list episodes for different reasons.

Most of the episodes i included in this list are the ones i often find myself rewatching and are the first that pop up in my mind when thinking about the series. 

I'm going to write two parts about this because i don't want to make the post so long.

Let´s start!:

Slash and Destroy 

When tmnt 2012 fans and non- fans talk about the best episodes of the series, most of the time they mention Slash and Destroy and it´s easy to see why:

The episode itself plays like a psychological horror movie, with Slash as a physical manifestation of Raphael´s darkest desires. He represents everything that Raph could become if he let the most toxic parts of his personality take control him.

Slash himself it´s very good antagonist, he isn´t just some random mutant that appears to destroy Raph´s brothers. He´s Raphael´s best friend and he knows many things that the rest of the Hamato family doesn´t. His uses this at his advantage to make Raph join his side and leave his brothers.

Raph in this episode is fantastic as well. We get to see a lot of his character, from his bad temper and how he thinks the team is ¨holding him back¨ to how far he willing to go to protect his family, even if that means fighting his friend.

Despite it´s tone Slash and Destroy has some of the funniest moments in the season: The subplot about Leo trying to get the mutantgen canister from other humans it´s hilarious. It doesn´t feel forced and doesn´t interrupt the drama, it´s nicely connected to the rest of the story.

I could write a lot about what makes this episode work so well, but i would like to keep that for other post.

New Girl In Town

This episode serves as introduction for Karai´s character and it´s one of my favourite for many reasons:

1)  It´s excellent for Raphael´s and Leonardo´s character arcs. Leonardo tired of how his brother doesn´t respect him as leader, decides to leave the role to Raph since he thinks it would be better if he was the one in charge.

Later, Raph finds out that being the leader isn´t as easy as it seems, when he's forced to give an order that would put the life of his brothers at risk he completely freezes up. He learns he can´t handle the burden of making difficult decisions as he cares for his family so much he´s afraid of accidentatly hurting them.

As for Leonardo, he tries doing things his own way for once, he decides to take a break from the team and ¨have fun¨.  In this episode he acts more like a "rebel" than his typical "good boy", which is quite refreshing to see.

He also learns that he shouldn't expect getting praise for being the leader. Splinter explains to him that the important part of being the one giving the orders is choosing to carry the burden. That's why Leo is the leader because he knows he has to be responsible in making decisions.

2) Karai is very interesting character that completely changes the dynamic of the main protagonists. She usually likes playing Leo and tries pursuing to join the bad side in this episode.

Her exchanges between Leo are very entertaing as well. They acts as friendly rivals and we get to see that she's actually not that bad in the end since she helps the turtles fighting Snakeweed.

"New girl in the town" it's a wonderful introduction for her, as it shows her as someone who it's morally gray instead of just evil.

3) The fight at the end is awesome. I really like how Leo and Raph work together to defeat Snakeweed. Raph decides to trust Leo's orders and follow his commands.

I think it's good way of showing they both have learned their lessons and how their relationships is changing.

Metalhead rewired

One thing i really like of tmnt 2012 it when two character fight, there isn't always one side who it's "right" and other who is "wrong". Sometimes they both make good points and "Metalhead rewired" is a good example of that.

This one is great for Donnie since he really wants to help the team with his inventions but.. as Leo tells him, they can be a bit dangerous and Donnie can lose control of them.

Here we get to see how Donnie's passion for science and technology can put his brothers at risk and how Leonardo also can be stubborn at times and struggles with being open to new ideas.

It's one of those rare instances in the series in which we see Leo and Donnie fight. They usually get on well since Donnie has no problem with following orders. He sometimes sarcastic with Leo but he rarely tries to an argument the same way that Raph does.

The thing it's that Donnie's and Leo's arguments are usually more about strategy than personal problems. While Raph's and Leo's fight are related to their slibing rivaliry and how their personalities clash with each other.

This episode deals with loss as well: Metalhead sacrifices himself to help the turtles escaping from the Kraang prision. While it's true that he can be rebuild it, i think it's still a pretty sad moment that it shows that Metalhead was a robot with good intentions in the end.

Vengeance is Mine

This another very memorable episode that tons of fans remember. The plot and the dialogue it's very well written and much like "Slash and Destroy" has tons of metaphors that worth of analyzing.

This episode it's mainly about Karai and her relationship with Shredder. It how revenge often being doing more harm than good and end up hurting everyone involved.

It starts with great action scene about the turtles helping Karai escape from Shredder's prision. Overall it's very intense scene due to being surronded by very dangerous enemies and they in Shredder's lair.

The scene in which Karai reunites with Splinter is really heartwarning. She doesn't say any word, she just.. hugs him, happy that she finally able to be with her real father. It's a very memorable scene.

And i really love how she later hangs out with the turtles during their training. It's such a cute scene.

The problem is that Karai really wants to make Shredder pay for what he had done to her family. Splinter tells her it's not really worth of her time, that all that matters is that they are now finally able to be together.

Karai sneaks out anyways and she gets captured by Shredder.

This forces the turtles and Splinter to go rescue her. While they are fighting, Oroku Saki accidentantly cuts the chain that holds Karai, making her fall into the mutagen and transforming her into giant snake.

I think i really like how the episode ends in a tragedy, showing how blinded Saki has become for getting his revenge that he even hurt someone he considered her daughter in the process. The scene is acts as a parallel to death, who died exactly in the same way.

Buried Secrets

I really enjoyed April the first time watching the series. It's was very interesting to me to see this girl that used to have a normal life have it completely changed because of the Kraang and "Buried Secrets" was not the exeption.

I really like the amount of psychological horror this episode has: April just wants to be with her lost mother who really turns out a defective monsters that shares her mother's memories and devours each one of the turtles.

On one hand April is finally able to learn more about her backstory and why she has Kraang powers. It was something that wasn't completely necessary for the series to explore but i really like the writers took the time to explain how O' Neil family was being experimented on.

On the other hand it's a really sad since her "mother" wasn't real in first place. It's has to be desvasting to find out your mother/father is really just a monster who is hurting your friends.

And like i said, this is one of the scariest enemies in tmnt 2012. It's very creepy how she just goes hunting each turtles one by one and no one know what's happening.

Mikey was great here too. He was the one that first suspected that April's mother wasn't what she appeared to be. It shows that while he sometimes he's a bit naive, he knows when something is seems off and take things more seriously.

TMNT 2003/2k3 Headcanon: Crying - (Leonardo)

Feel free to scroll past this first part if you’re not interested in my silly rambling and nonsense. I won’t mind. Promise. ;)

Okey-dokey then, with the global epidemic that is the Coronavirus well in action and most of the world stuck in lockdown (starting this Friday for us too), felt like getting the ‘ol creative juices flowing with a little headcanon-y thingy in preparation for -possibly- more fandom writings to keep myself busy during the house arrest (well... it kinda is!) and hopefully my mind off all the bad news. :( 

Also, this is totally my first one on the blog! WOOT! Please bear in mind that I’m SUPER rusty! Haven’t written in ages so there are bound to be typos and all matter of general errors scattered throughout the post. Don’t pet them! They bite!  

Anyhoo~ Despite attempting to create and share with the goal in mind to uplift spirits, I decided to start on a rather upsetting subject (PLEASE DON’T LEAVE! They end on happy notes ;) ) because, Imma just come and say it, I enjoy seeing my favourite characters shed tears (not for just any old reason -their personality plays a huge role in this- and CERTAINLY not for sadistic reasons, land sakes no! But... well, you’ll see~ ;) ) It makes me all gooey and fuzzy inside to see them display such raw emotion and I just wanna leap into the TV screen to hug and console them. I dunno why. Maybe I’m nuts like that. (Remembers Raph crying at the farm when Leo was badly injured and wishes she could just hug them all and take away the pain) Oh well, if you enjoy visualizing the same, then *High Fives*. :)

~LEONARDO~

-- It’s no easy feat to make the leader in blue turn on the waterworks. Leo won’t cry for any old reason. It’s not because he has no emotions, far from it, but being the leader of a small ninja clan -who happen to be family as well- is no easy task in itself: he has a lot on his young shoulders and deals with many issues on a daily basis few his age ever have to.

-- It’s because of these reasons that Leo doesn’t cry often. One of the lesser likely to out of the four brothers. But when he does, it’s an emotionally distressing sight to behold. 

-- Leo tends to cry whenever those closest to him -namely his brothers, his father/master and truest friends- are severely injured or are in a dire situation. Remember his angry/moody arc? The thought of losing any of them causes him great pain and distress, especially if he were the cause of any of it, and when that happens, he can’t stop the dampness that forms around his eyes and soaks into his mask. 

-- He’s not fond of crying, especially in front of others, even though he fully comprehends its normalcy. He feels he needs to be everyone’s rock, their fortress of physical and emotional stability to turn to for strength when things get rough... So when the tears start to fall, he feels he can’t show them, can’t allow them to watch him crumble under the gripling weight of helplessness and anguish.

-- He frantically wipes at his eyes and desperately attempts not to sniffle, but it’s a hopeless battle, for his tears are already a steady stream. 

-- He’ll try to hide when possible, usually retreating to his room to allow the worst of the emotions to spill over before returning to the others... Though he may be in there a while: when Leo lets his emotions go, it can be just as powerful as his red-banded brother’s rage. 

-- He spares no time in making sure the coast is clear for the tears are already streaming by the time he reaches his futon, and there’s no stopping them now as he lets himself drop to his knees, only halfway onto the mattress. He purposefully leaves the room unlit, cloaking his form in the darkness. 

-- He sniffs a few times as he shuffles up against the wall, sitting upright against it, bringing his legs up and hugging them loosely and droops his head against a single knee pad. 

-- His voice desperately wishes to escape. To express its misery. But he won’t allow it to, often placing one hand over his face in a bid to quell the sadness and remain silent in the battle against his own inner turmoil. He refuses to let anyone see him in that state of utter sorrow and vulnerability.

-- He whimpers ever so slightly and coughs a few times as breathing becomes difficult. He knows this episode won’t be over any time soon. Fortunately, he keeps some tissues next to his bed for such rare occasions and tries not to blow too loudly. He thinks back to the last time he cried so hard... It’s been a while. It felt like a build up. 

-- Time has been forgotten as he’s lost in deep thought. By the time he slips a hand across his eyes, only the material of his mask is still slightly damp. He clears his nostrils a couple of times before considering whether he was ready to return to his family. He’d of course straighten up his bedding beforehand, and would also require a trip to the bathroom to wash his face. A true ninja leaves no evidence. 

-- Leo tries to put the horrifying images out of head before leaving his quarters. He doesn’t wish to be weighed down again and thus maybe cause his emotions to come out a second time. He knew someone would catch on that time. Instead, he holds his head up high, focusing on the there and now to carry him forward.  

BONUS EXTRA~

-- Failure is also one of his greatest foes. Leo despises it, but not in the irrational sense; he fully comprehends that in order to grow, one has to lose in order to learn and thus, succeed in turn, and while it can frustrate him when he’s unsuccessful at mastering a martial arts technique for example, he understanders it’s part of the process and that no one’s perfect. 

-- It’s when his slipups could spell casualties or death to his family and/or friends is when it weighs down on him like a boulder strapped to his shell. 

-- A really big one. 

-- And it hurts. So much so that it causes him to become despondent and often teary-eyed when no one’s looking.

-- Boi Bloo might also cry from especially sad movie scenes. He gets seriously into the story, and when the scene is just right -perfect music, perfect timing etc.- you may just catch Fearless with watery eyes. 

-- He can’t help it. After all, he’s a leader, and very caring and kind-hearted individual, so movies showing children or anyone/anything defenceless getting hurt has him not only visibly upset, but also angry at the cause. He’s a softie like that. 

-- He won’t have a meltdown, of course, but the tears are definitely there. Just don’t tease him too much; he’s easily embarrassed by it. ;) 

BONUS EXTRA EXTRA FEMALE READER OR S/O EDITION~ (Can also use an OC/FC insert if you wish, up to you)

You had figured something was up by the time you’d finished greeting everyone in the Splinterson household except for the Turtle you’d long to see most and he hadn’t made his presence yet known. 

The idea that he must’ve been practicing or meditating swiftly vanished when Mikey told you he’d been in his room in the dark for the past few hours. “The guy hardly ever naps, and even so, never this long.” He’d told you. “I dunno, (Y/N), we were about to check on ‘im when you arrived, but maybe you should be the one to. Think he’d really appreciate it.” And there was absolutely no argument from your side as you were already making your way up to the room.

You didn’t know what to expect as you neared the doorway. Could he possibly still just be sleeping? Meditating in the dark instead of his usual spot by the training area? Or... was he sick? The latter now had you concerned and you picked up your pace... Only to pause mid step when an unmistakable sound reached your ears: a sniffle.

Had it come from within his room? It was the only logical explanation as everyone else was downstairs. You were truly perturbed now as you stood outside the doorway and called out the ‘eldest’ Turtle’s name.

There was some shuffling to be heard but you were unable to tell for sure what he was doing -probably trying to neaten up his bed- “(Y/N)? Just a second, okay?” he responded in a rather awkward verging on frantic tone, and you were certain you heard another sniffle escape him. 

That, along with the way he’d replied really didn’t help to put your mind at ease. “Leo, are you alright?” Nor was the pitch blackness in which he remained concealed in.

“Yeah, just... l-looking for something.” There was some more shuffling as if to prove his point, but you were having none of it.

“Then maybe this,” you began, turning around to flick the light switch, “will help?”

“No! Wait!” But it was a split second too late for as soon the brightness illuminated the entire room, you had caught the telltale signs of an emotional meltdown in progress plastered on his face before he quickly turned away and briskly wiped an arm across his face, attempting to hide the shame... or perhaps embarrassment? 

“Leo...?” your heart and voice softened, “Hey, what’s wrong?” You automatically walked to him, closing the gap he was now trying to form. 

“Nothing,” he lied, and acknowledged it was a fruitless attempt but still couldn’t stop himself. Autopilot panic mode was enabled now. “It’s nothing.” 

Unfortunately for him, autopilot mother hen mode was activated for you as you reached with both hands to his carapace and shoulder, gently turning him to face you. “I can see that it’s something.” Your words were gentle, and you wanted nothing more than to take away his pain. “Look at me, Honey.” His body was turned but his head remained to the side. It was clear he didn’t want his obvious distress on display, even to you. “Please, Leo?” You tried again, and slowly but surely, his eyes met yours, and you felt your heart sink further.

The fabric of his mask was wet and eyes were still red with fresh tears that threatened to fall. He appeared so broken and helpless as he stared at you, and even though he uttered no words, you could practically hear him despairingly ask “Is this what you wanted? To see me at my lowest?” from his expression alone. 

Never had you witnessed the leader of this band of mutant brothers cry. At times you had wondered if he ever did, and yet here he was; the incredible pillar of strength and dignity you had come to know and adore, in tears and so dejected that you couldn’t stop your own eyes from becoming damp the more you gazed at him. “Oh, Sweety...” You whispered as you felt your soul shatter. It was too much to bear. You slowly wrapped your arms around him, one around the midsection and the other over his shoulder, and buried your face into his leathery neck, offering every ounce of comfort you could muster.

It didn’t take him long at all to sink into the embrace and return the action. Beyond the point of concerning himself with showing the pain he felt -or the wetness now soaking into your shoulder when he placed his forehead against it- he sniffed and finally allowed the tears to fall once again as fresh waves of emotion surged throughout his body.

And this time, he couldn’t keep the whimpering to himself.

“Shh~ It’s okay, it’s okay,” you soothed, lightly patting and rubbing along the scutes of his shell as he weakly sobbed, finally letting go of all the sadness that gripped him. 

You weren’t even aware of what was wrong, and you most likely wouldn’t find out til later once he calmed down, but right now, he just needed you to hold him. Hold him until the hurt was gone... And so you would. 

AND THAT’S ALL SHE WROTE!

ALL THE FEELS!! I EMBARRASS!!

OMGosh, this turned into a monster! The mother of all HCs!! :O No seriously, this wasn’t meant to be this long! I was suppose to squish all four into one itty bitty little post, but then it just grew... and grew... and GREW! Personally, I blame the Reader Bonus but I’d be damned if I didn’t enjoy writing it! ;P You guys here on Tumblr got me slightly addicted to them and have wanted to attempt some myself so... Anyhoo~ I can’t really say if I’m entirely content with the whole thing, I dunno. I feel some parts are better than others (writing style-wise) but yeah, I really need to get back into the swing of things...

Speaking of which, I DO plan on adding my two cents on the other bois as well, but judging by how this one turned out, they’ll most likely all be this length, more or less, so each Turt will get his own post so I can really jot down those details with all the freedom in the world! That being said, I can’t say when they’ll be added but hopefully soon-ish. :) Raph's next on the list!
