The shitiest translation of a book (known to me) aka why Polish translation of Good Omens sucks hard

Let me take you on an adventure! Sadly it won’t be one during a nice and sunny day with happiness and laughter but rather a dreadful and containing mad giggles. What is that adventure you may ask? Why it’s an official Polish translation of Good Omens! Look at the photos below:

See all the plastic markers? Those are the mistakes I found in the book. But let me tell you. Those are not all of them! Just the major ones or ones that offends me the most.

You may ask: why did I use up most of my free time for over 2 months to do this?

Many years ago when I read the book for the first time I felt slightly disappointed. The book wasn’t as good as I thought it would be. It was weird, because I really liked T. Pratchett books from Disc World series. Maybe because there was other author? Or maybe the whole concept how the world was built? At that time I couldn’t even know that I would quite like the book in the future, and it wasn’t my younger mind fault that it was so confused. But the translation. Years later after watching the series I was wondering, why the book felt a bit off to me. And then my friend opened the book at a random, it was page no. 382, and found a mistake there. I thought it would be fun to compare both the original and the official translation. Oh what ‘fun’ it was.

THE HISTORY

First few facts to settle it in the time line.

The book was first published in 1990. T. Pratchett was 42 then, and N. Gaiman - 30. They co-wrote modern book settled in more or less the same time as it was published. It is important information to take here, because it might explain some of the terrible translation errors.

Polish version was first distributed in 1992. It had 2 translators Jacek Gałązka and Juliusz Witold Garztecki. It’s hard to tell more about the first one, but the other was 70 when he translated the book. Yes 70! And in his biography you can read, he was mostly rewarded for his books about army thins. My point is, while I don’t know much about this person I don’t think he was the right one for translating a book such as Good Omens. Maybe I’m biased, but just because there are some army men and some war themes in the book doesn’t mean it has the right vibes.

But let’s dive into the errors and just wrong stuff I found by getting Polish book, English version paperback and pdf version for faster search of phrases.

There are 2 major types of errors:

“Editors” (errors that are not based off wrong translation per se, just lazy editing and some weird choices of the redaction).

Prologue and 2 part switched – the book should start with Eden scene not the character names introduction. Yeah in many old fashioned books it was other way around but this is author decision! You shouldn’t switch it because it looks better for you that way!

- Chapters with numbers that not correspond with the parts in the book – yep in PL version chapters have numbers. What for? I don’t know, because there isn’t any table of content. And some chapter begin randomly not like bigger parts of the book.

- Lack of days of the week – It is important for the flow of the book yet we can’t read it like in the original at the begging of some pages 130- Lack of the dividing signs between paragraphs – sometimes there aren’t any. Because why to bother.

Lack of starting dialogue in a new line – there were few cases where someone didn’t drop a new line for dialogue and I was so confused who said what.

Lack of dialogue lines – in few places whole dialogue lines are missed

Interpunction mistakes, fast speaking with the comas not the dots – so pacing, that changes the flow of the book

Splitting text in general was terrible.

The capital letters, cursive and normal dialogue – in this book it is important what kind of font property we use – normal dialogue is different than Death speaking or Aziraphale talking in different bodies. But in this translation it is messed up. The angel speaks with capital letters like Death. That so not cool for me… and take those small pleasures reading the book.

You can also see PL version of the book has distinct change of tone in the middle. Why? Because you can tell almost exactly when the other translator started to work. And well, I think they didn’t communicate (don’t know the reason) because same stuff ,same words, even same names aren’t corresponding! You will see it later in the text.

story errors:

The first translator: looks like bitter man, who wants to correct the writers, adding 234532 not needed words, have sexist wording, and sometimes archaic speech. Makes one good joke and his translation of Agnes speech is nice. Maybe because he is closer to her times than to the times the book was written.

The major mistakes: too many words even for Polish version; Polish words are generally longer than English ones and sometimes you need to add words to have the same context. But this man goes so far with it is ridiculous. He takes 2 lines of good, easy translatable text that in PL would make max 3 lines and makes it to 5 lines. Why to add unneeded stuff?

Weird figures of speech that are not funny - those are really strong point in the Disc world book and in the original Good omens too. But the translation butchered those, drowning the wit and throwing random, sometimes even archaic, lines.

Crowley name – context mistake – Crowley name was Crawly first, the demon changed it later. Not in PL ver. Form the first line he was always Crowley.

Changing the text so context is changed too: like making an island form the a mountain, or changing a word that we don’t know if it’s a flame because the description is so vague. Or sometimes it is just translated wrong in general, changing the meaning.

Archaic words – like I’ve said it was modern book in the 90’. It wasn’t written in the 60’. Also new version of the book could be upgraded. Like in the 90 word ‘weekend’ wasn’t popular in Poland but now it is. So why do we have Saturday-Sunday and not just weekend…

The vulgarisms: bit too hardcore for a book that was co-made by terry Pratchett. Real Polish language has best vulgarisms and I love them but this book is not the place for most of them. Also because when they are there we could feel the impact. But you know what? Azz didn’t say his ‘Fuck’ line in PL version when being called back to heaven if page before it in translation he swears quite badly ( which also changes context…) Yep no “Fuck”… why the translator didn’t write “noż kurw…” or something? I don’t know…

Added words like “black Bentley”. In the original that phrase was used once or twice not like 10 times. The reader remember this car is black I can assure you…

Added whole sentences: sometimes the translator adds whole sentence without a reason. It is not his book… really…

Billion in Polish is not billion or million it is MILIARD – yep, those people are not great with numbers.

Lack of sentences: too many lines before? Let’s cut some of them out… I don’t know why but such a thing happens here too. Example is the Crowley pen scene.

Context mistake with the Bentley bullet holes – one of most confusing paragraph in PL version. I didn’t know what the hell (or heaven) is going on. So I read the original and everything made sense. Crowley put new window glass with holes. It was that easy. In PL version it sounds somewhat different.

Mr. and ‘Pan’ – mister in Polish is ‘Pan’, but somehow the book uses the Mr. shortening and sometimes Pan. Why not Pan all the time? Why to use Mister word in Polish version?

Spanish Inquisition – this scene is so butchered I just can’t… in Pl version it sounds like someone told him it was fun not that the hell congratulated Crowley for the inquisition

Lack of consequent translation: Asmodeusz I Wormwood – names: this is same name in English version. Also sister Mary’s surname once is translated and later is used as it was in the original (in my opinion it should be translated so the reader would understand it better)

Kraken!! – do you know that first translator didn’t knew that Kraken is a name of underwater past and thought it is some kind of light vulgarism? I couldn’t make that up myself…

Ineffable – this word is translated on many occasion in a different way, sometimes changing the meaning like Az said it is ineffable and in PL version is “Azz couldn’t find a way to explain this” really. Only later in the book the word is translated better. And as it is a running joke in the book it should be translated consistently in my opinion.

No food joke with deviled eggs and angel cake. And it was completely spoiled. The translator either didn’t know what deviled eggs are or thought it is overcooked food and made Aziraphale not like it. Even after one drink I thought out how to make food pun and not spoil the part…

Fell’s name – I like the small pun that Az took last letters of his name to make a fake family name, however in Polish version translator didn’t see the joke and put there some weird ass cringe pseudonym.

And of course homophobia…– and not one that Az look like a stereotypical homosexual man no… also the “southern pansy’ is translated each time differently and at least once so much more vulgar and offensive.

Killing the joke about healing the bike – I love this joke. It is silly and light but in PL version Crowley says it like it was some offense.

Snowballs in hell – Polish has equivalent idiom “hell freezes over” but translator somehow didn’t use it and instead wrote “there are no chances for it in hell”… the meaning is lost

Being mean – translator makes some characters mean without reason

What is a bully? The translator apparently didn’t know and messed up by saying it’s same as a loser

Recycling paper is same as recycling toilet paper for the translator – disgusting

Famine – the 6 letter word. In PL translate as “głód”. So a 4 letter word. Yet the character wrote his name in 6 letter in PL version…

Pepper reads erotic magazine for teens in PL version, not some stuff like Bravo… really? Pepper is 11.. she reads about boybands and shit…. Really…

Racism - the joke about men’s underwear (when Newt answered the phone) was changed to literally “painting Chinese people white”….

Shadwell - and his hate of southern people was changed to him hating English people… why? Also his “southern pansy” saying, is translated as “ English fag” but also “funny guy”… yeah

Pollution - powietrze morowe and skażenie – one translator gave Pollution a super weird name, the other one gave a proper one. That means book holds 2 names and people will be confused reading the second ‘chapter’ and later parts of the book.

Second translator was bit better. He didn’t add so much from himself and didn’t make as much mean comments and mistranslated. His errors are mostly literal translation of the words. That means whole sentences and even paragraphs sounds at least weird but in the long run, some doesn’t have much sense at all and sounds AI generated. But it was written in then 90. Well I don’t have the 90 copy but the translators are the same on both covers so I think it is a very sloppy translation, or one was a complete amateur.

Also the translator doesn’t understand the difference between chips and crisps. I don’t know why he thinks kids eats fries and not thin potato snacks all the time.

I really can’t write how the translation of the second part of the book is stiff and not flow enough. Look at this:

Sometimes the translator is too lazy to find a word in Polish so he uses an English one and then puts description bellow…. Why do that when there are Polish words for it?

Also why are most numbers written with letters and not numbers? Maybe it is normal to do so but for me reading the name of a number is more confusing than just seeing the number ( like writing five hundred and not just 500)

Also they had to explain what sushi is :D now really in 2019 the this book was re-release most people know what sushi is. Besides, even that description is wrong…

There are also places when you could use Polish names for stuff or people. Like the painters to describe Tadfield. Most Polish people don’t know ones in the original book. But when you use famous Polish painters the parallel/joke would be better.

The translator doesn’t know or remember proper Polish idioms like kopnąć w kalendarz (kick the calendar - in English it would be “kick the bucket”) means to die, using weird ‘punch the calendar’ why?

Again sometimes when there are citations from the song one translator keeps the original, while the other one translates it. It’s confusing but in the end the reader should know what the words means.

Translator doesn’t know that sometimes you can’t turn back(?) on the road and for sure doesn’t know how to translate it.

Second translator sometimes also used the language calque and not proper words.

The first translator wrote too much. This one cuts sentences sometimes.

And why is there explanation what Beelzebub name means?

Ending – where is forever? – ending of the book has a warm and slightly philosophical ending. With word ‘forever’ as the last word. I don’t know why Polish ‘na zawsze’ wasn’t written there? it really takes away from the ending…

There are hundreds of small and big mistakes really… ( movie clip if I can)

To sum it up: someone had bright idea to give a modern book to 2 older men to translate, when they weren’t really good with translation, or vibes etc. The book has been butchered ant that’s super sad. It could make potential reader to not like it even if they read the original it would be fine.

I wish the publisher would hire someone re-translate it in or give it to another publisher.

I’m not someone with a degree in English language but when someone like me can ‘catch’ all the mistakes and errors, I wonder what professional would say. Good for me I can read in English enough to enjoy the original, for all the others: better watch the series.

So you’re long term single. I’m long term single, too. But do you want a Hollywood leading man career? Do you play games, including pretending to be with your co-star for years, to get your dream career? Do you have a heavyweight PR person to plan your pap walk and PDA for public consumption? Well, I don’t.

You know Anon, I wrote already a long answer, but just removed it all as I wasn't even half way of what I perhaps would like to express in my answer to you. I deleted it, since, what's the point, how many words do I need to write. You're gonna see things just like you want, from your point of view, from your own experiences, and your cultural background, or whatever ingredients you can think of that makes you form your opinion. And I'm doing exactly the same.

I know your message derives from yesterdays discussion about the 'gay theory' (for lack of a better description). I left some comments on there, as I was triggered by how 'the lack of a gf/lover' was 'interesting'.

It's the biased presumptions, the part you show as well in your message to me, by implying he plays games, pretended to be with his co-star for years to get his dream career. The heavyweight PR person planning pap walks. I don't share that view particularly.

I know, in the same thread I got told, I'm a 'late comer' [to the fandom]. I'm not quite sure how that makes my perception of things less worthy, or was it to belittle me or my view or opinion? I don't know. Actually, I was in the process to write another comment and then just thought, oh why, what's the point here. I didn't sent it. I just read how some of the posters claimed they're not there to prove anything, and people can have their own opinions, yet they were quite engaged in the whole thread referring to all kind of 'proof' that imho is based on pure confirmation bias. There, I used that term once again. Anyway, I could do the same, and what would it matter, what do we all achieve? A lot of time wasted on a subject that nobody ever will have factual proof for, and even if there was, it would be denied and 'explained' by the ones whom's narrative it doesn't fit.

It's quite easy Anon, I showed and wrote about it a number of times, to just put a narrative based on confirmation bias out there and make it cannon in this fandom. One word, one sentence can go a long way. That's for what I write, but that's also for his actions and words (or for that matter, his co-stars as well). How a bar of Irish soap can lead to many receipts, explanations, accusations, all depending on what fraction of the fandom explains it. If you come to think of it, it is quite hilarious and ridiculous at the same time, and maybe even a bit sad.

Same with the 'PR planned pap walks'. Yes, he does get 'papped' where that word to me means, he get photographed by paparazzi. You know, the name they call photographers that make their living to get pictures of celebs and get paid for it by magazines or online stock images distributors. It's a job. Thing is, each fraction in this fandom has their own view and explanation for it. One part says, he needs to be seen with a woman to sell his [insert whatever to sell or promote here]. Another part says, it's to hide his real marriage with CB. Yet another part knows she's a beard and in fact lesbian.... Need I go on? Yes, I go on with the biggest majority of the fandom, the ones that see a nice pic of him, discuss the shirt or the color of socks.... They're totally oblivious of all the narratives and they don't even follow whom he's with. And they're not interested in that at all. They sometimes get a bit overboard when he posts a pic with a certain beer brand. So, for who exactly are these so called 'pap walks' planned? Are they planned? I don't know, and frankly I don't care because what does it prove? Does it prove he's gay? Does it prove he's married to his co-star? Does it prove he's a womanizer? It gets him some attention and that's it 🤷‍♀️

Then there is this other thing, the 'being single part' in your message. If you are a long term single, you most likely had your own share of gossip around you as a person. Cause that's what happens. It's amazing, but actually also sad, how people still can't let go the medieval part that being in a steady relationship is not always the ultimate way of living. The sad part is, how they make up stories about you. If you go out for a drink or a coffee or have a bite with a good friend, oh... she must be... right, no I must be nothing, I was just having a good time with a friend. Or you work closely together with someone, who becomes your friend, and you are seen a lot of times together... oh they must be... no, it's someone whom I like and love to work with, we have some common interests and we like to hang out together as well from time to time. Just some examples, there are many more. And what did I do to make people gossip but just have a good time with somebody? They never say it to your face, but you know what they are talking about behind your back. And yes, of course the being gay part, or in my case lesbian part, is talked about as well. Not to your face, no they are just too cowardly to ask you, or are they just afraid of the answer that makes all their fun of talking about you a moot point? What do people expect from singles? That they sit on the couch waiting for the love of my life to ring my doorbell? That they spent their time on dating apps to find the ever loving partner who brings you your breakfast on bed? Oh the things I could tell, I could write a book about it, and it would make a pretty good tv show perhaps.

Anyway, at some point you stop reacting on those ridiculous things they say about you. You shrug and move on. You know for yourself, there is just nothing wrong with being single, it's just another way of life. If it shows one thing it is that a lot of people pretend to be open minded for different opinions, ways of life and respective of another persons life and choices. Yet, they show at the same time their narrow minded suspicion and biased views.

And if there's one thing I learned from this fandom, it's that there are a lot of weird people in it, of which Sam is not the weirdest but quite boring compared to them. Take the Twitter account currently pretending she's traveling with her imaginary bf the SS tour. Or that shipper who rather flips coins and trust her guts, while a marriage certificate is totally fake. Now that's weird in my book! But okay, it's a way of life I guess. To each their own.

Sigh, and all in all it still became quite a long answer. And all in all I know people will say you're [insert any criticism] because [insert any reason]. And I... I shrug and will just move on.

“That boy is in love with you,” his mother says, and upon seeing Sirius’ face, she continues “I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and I am certain of it.”

10th: Party

Enlightening

Sirius is relieved to step into the foyer of the Black estate. It has been a long day, and he’s glad to be home. He shrugs of his coat and passes it to a waiting servant, as he strides through the hall, ready to retreat to his private chambers.

“Sirius, is that you?”

Sirius stops and turns, walking back and stepping into the parlour, where his mother is sitting in a chair, having a cup of tea. Of course, even alone sitting in her own parlour, she is impeccably dressed, in a satin dress of a rich, dark colour that contrasts beautifully with the paleness of her skin, and an excessive necklace around her neck.

“Ah, it is!” She says with a smile. “Join me, love. You simply must tell me all about the party.”

She holds out her hand, elegant as always, and Sirius takes it and brings it to his lips for a light kiss. He sits down in the chair across from her with a deep sigh.

“Come, come, my dear,” his mother says. “What has gotten you so dejected? Did you not have fun at the party?”

“As a matter of fact, I did not,” Sirius replies. “It was tedious, and Rabastan was once again very condescending towards me. Mother,” Sirius takes a deep breath. “I am going to end things with Rabastan.”

His mother presses her lips into a tight line. “That is not a decision to make lightly.”

“And I am not!” Sirius insists. “I have given him a chance as you requested of me, but there’s nothing there, nor will there ever be. I simply do not care for him.”

“But he speaks ever so fondly of you!”

Sirius scoffs. “I do not know what he is fond of, but it certainly isn’t me. My last name probably, my looks possibly, but certainly not me as a person. He knows nothing about me! He does not wish to know anything about me either, as he never shows any interest in learning anything about me. There’s only one topic that interests him, and that is himself.”

“That’s just how those men are, Sirius. Your father was just the same. Their egos apparently need it,” his mother shrugs. “It’s really not much trouble to indulge them.”

Sirius frowns. “Maybe that was enough for you and father, but don’t you wish something more for your children?”

His mother raises her eyebrows. “Something more? What could there be more than a respectable marriage and financial security?”

“I don’t know. Love?”

His mother waves her hand dismissively. “Don’t be such a child, Sirius.”

Sirius sighs. “Alright, maybe love is too much to ask for, but someone I like, someone I can at least stand, surely isn’t, and Rabastan is neither of those things. He thinks he can make all decisions for me, he never asks for my opinion, and when I do give my opinion, he only belittles or ridicules me. He’s disrespectful towards me and rude to my friends. They don’t understand why I’m with someone like him, and all say I deserve better.”

His mother purses her lips. “Have you considered that your friends might not be exactly objective in the matter?”

Sirius snorts. “They better not be! They’re my friends, they should be completely biased towards me.”

His mother shakes her head. “No, I mean they might not have your best interest at heart, but rather their own.”

“How do you mean?” Sirius asks.

“That Lupin boy...” His mother begins.

“Remus?”

“That boy is in love with you,” his mother says, and upon seeing Sirius’ face, she continues “I’ve seen the way he looks at you, and I am certain of it.”

Sirius stares at her. “...Remus? In love with me?”

“Think about it and you’ll know I’m right.”

So Sirius does think about it.

Remus, with that soft smile he only ever seems to give Sirius.

Remus, who looks at him like he’s the best thing that’s ever happened to the world.

Remus, who makes him feel like he’s everything whenever Rabastan made him feel like he’s nothing.

Remus.

Remus, who’s always there for him, Remus, who makes him feel valued and appreciated, Remus, who loves him.

“Thank you, mother,” Sirius says, abruptly getting up from his chair. “This conversation has been very enlightening.”

His mother nods. “I trust you will make the right decision.”

“Don’t worry, I will.” Sirius leans in and kisses his mother’s cheek. “Now if you’ll excuse me? It has been a long day, and I very much like to retreat to my private chambers.”

His mother waves her hand in assent, and as Sirius walks away, he can’t help the smile forming on his face.

genuinely i do not think about story ideas enough to have a solid one for him but if it counts i often think about him accidentally stealing one of fukuzawa's scarves from That Era i forgot how old he was at the time . and then just keeping it . and fukuzawa finds out somehow . i love them shut up

unpopular opinion

uhhh liking mori in general FSJKHASJKHASFJKG like have you seen this fandom . 99% of the people here fucking hate mori with a passion . and just liking him is super controversial . aside from that though ive seen analyses (tending to be like "mori and pedophilia" or something along those lines) and honestly they make me feel like hes just being really uuuh whats the word. really abstract with how he says things i guess? like one in particular i remember was a word in the original manga (jap) and he said a word that means both "wife" and "thing by my side" or something like that, when theres so many different words he could have used if he wanted to be Creepy specifically. idk theres my mori opinion its so controversial i know block me if u'd like but i love him

genuinely when i first met all of the hunting dogs i forgot all of their names immediately . as chapters went on though i think the two main things i remember thinking "hes adorable" and "hes in love with jouno 100%"

Yes, Timothee’s career did take a toll after the controversies of his connection to Kylie Jenner. The disgust of this relationship transfered into people sideyeing him and judging him in everything he now does. And the SNL skit was no exception. He recieved his fair amount of criticism for that. Will his career suffer? Not in the sense of losing work or opportunities. He will still be offered a decent amount of acting and producing work, fashion promotions, hosting events and so on. But in the sense of respect and admiration, he might have permanently lost many points.

His relationship with Kylie is still a showmance. It is turning more into a one woman show, as he is more of a no show for most of the time. The majority of stories and narratives circulating online and in fan circles are just fabricated nonsense. I believe the contract is up and done, and that for a good while now. If not, he is definetely already with one foot out the door. Unless something unexpected changes drastically, I sense breakup articles in the near future. Only thing I am a bit concerned about is the mention of him and fear. And my mind started remembering bruises on his face and injuries on his finger. And also the fact that he has been looking extremely fatigued at times. Take this with a frain of salt though. It was just a flash of images that came to me while reasonating my cards with you.

As I mentioned, I doubt he has plans to bring Kylie to any premieres. But Kylie might decide to meet up anyways, like she has done a couple of times before. Whether she does or not, for sure we will have comments from someone saying they saw her, but she was staying lowkey.

Timothee will have many relationships in his future. He is still very young. He is unlikely to end up with anyone steady in the near future. But when he does, it will be with someone likable and unexpected.

For those who care to know about the connection he has with Armie Hammer. No, they are not done. I sense we will see them together at one point in the future. When we least expect it. Following up with this fandom prompt, I'm going into an under-requested but well received fandom on this blog, Servamp!

Send me a fandom and I will name a character:

Who I will protect at all costs: This is a two-way tie between Sakuya and Tsurugi. I could not pick between them because both of them just hit me so right. They make me want to take care of them and want to protect them and make them happy!

Who deserves better: So many of these characters deserved better than the lots they got in life, if I’m to be honest. However, seeing them deal with those and, in some cases, how they’ve chosen to overcome them, makes for some truly fantastic characters.

Who was killed off too early: It’s not that they were killed off too early because there’s no way the story could exist with them still being alive, but I really would have liked to have seen more regarding Mikuni’s mother and that whole situation with her. I think it would make a solid side story to the main manga, along with one focusing on Hyde and Ophelia’s time together.

Who I used to hate but now I love: Something about Mikuni really bothered me when he first showed up. He just gave me some creepy vibes but the further we got into the story and the more we learned about him, the more I started genuinely first liking and then loving him as a character…the fact that he’s also kind of strangely gotten more attractive thanks to slight art style evolution might have helped as well.

Who I used to love but now I hate: Hugh. I had found him absolutely adorable and he was originally my favourite of the Servamps. Though I don’t hate him, per se, he’s definitely a little soured in my view.

Who needs to be killed off asap: Touma. I don’t care about redemption, I don’t care about excuses. I just want to see him dead.

Who is unfairly hated: As with all answers to this and the next question, I will say the same thing as I say for any and all fandoms. Nobody. Everyone is entitled to love or hate the characters they do. These are fictional characters, everyone will interpret and see them in their own way, based on their own biases and reads on the characters and can hate or like the characters they do without having to be ashamed about it.

Who is unfairly loved: See the above answer.

Who needs to sort out their priorities: Tsubaki, honestly. I do feel like it’s just that enough attention hasn’t been paid to really fleshing him out, but I can’t fully get a grip on his priorities or motivations a lot of the time. I do get the argument that he can just be a sort of embodiment of chaos for the sake of chaos, but I also don’t fully get that vibe from him either.

Who needs a hug: If I could, I would hug Sakuya at least five times a day. It goes along with my first answer of who I would protect the most!

Who needs to get out of their current relationship: Okay, I know the fans of this particular ship will kill me. I get their Servamp/Eve dichotomy and I even enjoy it at times but there is a really unhealthy, abusive part of Hyde and Licht’s relationship, if viewed in any subjective or realistic way.

Who the writers love: Mahiru, but as with most stories, this mostly comes down to being the protagonist. I do find him a little bland at times but he’s still an enjoyable character and doesn’t fall square into the ‘bland bitch protagonist’ field so I don’t mind how much of him we do see.

Who needs a better storyline: Not so much a better storyline, and again, I’m not fully caught up to the manga, but I feel like Tsubaki needs…more. I’m not fully sure how to articulate what I mean by that, but I find him stagnant in some ways. I feel like there needs to be more done with him, more of a back-story fleshed out or more sides to him shown.

Who has an amazing redemption arc: I feel like we’re still seeing it but I do feel like Tsurugi, for the time he’s been in the picture, has displayed and had focus given to a lot of character development and it has made him one of my favourite characters because of that.

Who is hot as fuck: He’s a little off-the-wall, but Higan in both his younger and older forms is just super attractive to me.

Who belongs in jail: Honestly, there were a lot of options. There’s a lot of characters who have done some…questionable things. However, my gut still goes with Touma every time.

Who needs to be revived from the dead: If the spoilers I’ve gotten is any indication, I think I got my wish here, but I’ve always thought that Sensei needed to come back, that there needed to be some twist there. I know a big plot line is that Kuro killed him and the fall-out from his action and the vote they took but I feel they jipped us what could be this batshit insane and truly intriguing character in Sensei.

thanks for your tags, I enjoyed reading them and I think it was very well put. I knew immediately after watching this film in trying to digest it in its entirety that there would be discourse. people who think this movie was gross and graphic without the understanding of the reasons are not seeing the full narrative being told here. gross themes sometimes need to be presented to tell the story. I absolutely AGREE that bella was taken advantage of while her mind was young and this occurrence served a purpose in the story.

Thank you for posting the gifs!!! It just really is a shame that this movie that’s about the joys (( and horrors )) in expanding your world view is being met with such a narrow mindset. Like there is definitely troubling content in the movie but there’s something interesting in both our reaction to that stuff as well as the non-reactions of Bella. Like when the movie starts and Bella is calling Willem Dafoe God I was immediately like 😬😬😬 the person I was talking with even pointed out that aspect as like another way the movie was upholding patriarchal standards to which I was like

Looks like somebody was too blinded by their biases to engage with movie on a subtextual levelllll~ my IMMEDIATE response to that detail was 😬😬😬 but then Bella literally explains that she calls him God because his name is Godwin. Every piece of information you receive about him makes him seem like the egomaniacal mad scientist type of character who sees Bella as nothing more than HIS creation. And while that first bit is like, well, objectively true, he actually has a remarkable soft spot for Bella and while he does keep her confined to the house at the beginning of the movie, it’s not out of cruelty or trying to keep her under his thumb, but because when he goes out he feels the cruelty of the people around him and he doesn’t want Bella to experience that herself. It really is just a pet name she has for him, and if anything sheds more light on the person who actually named HIM Godwin, who is actually confirmed to be the stereotypical egomaniacal mad scientist archetype. This is even flat out stated by Bella when she calls him God in front of Toinette who gives her a weird look and she’s like “What? His name is Godwin Baxter.” And if you know anything about the character of Godwin you know there’s absolutely no way he was bringing Bella up with religion in mind. Duncan even says “I don’t understand you! How can you not know what a banana is, but understand what empirically means?” Bella absorbs other people’s biases, but doesn’t attach the same judgements or weights to them that they do unless they explain it to her, and even then whether or not she takes an actual stance on it is her own call. Like Bella does call out Godwin at the end of the movie, but it’s mainly because of how he lied to her about the circumstances of her “birth”. She’s a great character for us audience members to do something similar, to set aside our own preconceived notions of right and wrong and see if we fall on the same side of the fence looking at things again with fresh eyes. Or you can just go “all on-screen sex is porn and nothing attached can have any value.” Freedom of choice also means that someone is free to choose wrong after all 🤭

LMFAO Agohiru from ES21 😂 I remember when I first got into es21 back in highschool, Hiruma was my fav, but I didn't think much of Agon other than 'wow what an asshole!' and didn't like him. (Also I was a big Hirumamo shipper at the time, and I'm the type who clings onto One Ship for a character and isn't too interested in anything else lol) It wasn't until I got back into it in the last couple of years that I've come to appreciate how much fun it is to bat that asshole around, and just how loaded Hiruma and Agon's ~history~ is.

Though I guess no one person specifically changed my mind, unless you count past me vs present me lol. OH actually, what changed my mind was the fic "Independent Variable" on ff.net. I think I got back into es21 and was like 'you know, hiruma/agon totally has potential' and so was looking up fics of that pairing, and then I read that fic and was lost.

D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.

Hmmmm oh, Merther (Merlin/Arthur) lol. Their set up as a ship is extremely juicy (two sides of the same coin?? fate ties them together??? conflict because their initial world views are diametrically opposed????) and there's soooo much fic for them, but. I just. I don't like Arthur 😭 Like, I mean, he's FINE. But the writing of the whole show is so inconsistent and there's entire seasons where he's just so shitty to Merlin for no damn reason in a way that I'm supposed to take as funny and silly which pisses me off more.

L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.

Hmmmm this isn't even a character I dislike, but whatever-- Judeau! I like him a lot tbh but I also find him shady 😂

I like how his 'friend who gives good advice and just has your best interests at heart' vibe is subverted by his personal biases and emotions, even if he'd probably deny that lol. He's flawed and it colors the advice he gives, and he even has moments that I'd argue are kind of judgy. It's what makes him interesting!

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Yes! Main one coming to mind rn because I've been thinking about Hiruma (ES21) a lot, is that Hiruma is on the ace spectrum! I'm usually pretty take-it-or-leave-it when it comes to sexuality headcanons, like I can buy most interpretations but I generally don't feel strongly about them, but with Hiruma I really struggle to see him as anything else.

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

OOHHHH. Well in Berserk, it's legit a tie between Guts and Griffith. I wouldn't like either one of them as much without the other in their orbit, and Berserk is one of those rare stories where both characters are really complex and compelling in their own way, and bring a lot of significant baggage into their dynamic lmfao. With Guts I love how sensitive he is, and the various ways in which he subverts and deconstructs the Macho Male Power Fantasy™ archetype, how at the end of the day he just wants someone to care about him and find worth in his existence. With Griffith, I love his ideals and his fragility in the face of the sacrifices those ideals demand from him, I love how much he cares and how much he gouges himself for caring, and how all of his stress and guilt and obligation still aren't any match for his love for Guts. And with both of them, I love how their upbringing informs their decisions so well to ruin everything even though they care about each other so much :')

w/ ES21, it's Hiruma lol which might be basic because he's everyone's fav, but for good reason! He's just fucking fun! I love how unhinged and demonic he is, I love the borderline slapstick loony-tunes tyle antics he gets up to, and I love his shamelessness. But I also love how accepting and realistic he is about his limitations, and how that doesn't stop him from striving for the top and going for what he wants. And like, for such an anime-level strategic genius type character, I love that such a core part of what makes him great is that he brings people together and uses teamwork and creativity to overcome everyone's various limitations. He's just-- so much fun!

And because this list is depressingly male lemme throw in a wild card-- Chase from Midnight Furies! It's a webcomic that I recently read for the first time, and Chase is the deuteragonist and a Hiruma expy lol. Which you can definitely tell, they both have the unhinged vibe and shark teeth, as well as the mysterious past and having a lot of cards up their sleeve, but I also think they're quite distinct. Obviously, Chase is a butch lesbian (which really does just add to her cool factor), but also I feel like Midnight Furies is a more grounded story compared to ES21, despite there being supernatural elements lol, and so Chase feels more grounded and realistic as a character. She's a bit more raw in her relationships to other people, and she shows vulnerability more, but she's also much more of a direct physical threat than Hiruma is. Because of that, she has moments where calculation gets thrown out the window in favor of a good ol' beat down, which of COURSE I love to see. And I think she has the capacity to be more ruthless. ANYWAY, awesome character, A+++ (please read Midnight Furies)

Trend-Servants (part 1 cuz it hit the text limit -mod)

Greetings to my loyal minions, I have held you captive for several weeks awaiting further commands by your leader! Haha, no, that's what I'd say if I was conceited enough to take advantage of my numerous adoring supporters. All seven of them! Yeah, I know… IT’S TOO MANY TO COUNT ON ONE HAND! But anyway, I started thinking about the concept of popularity in general. Y'know, the current “cool” standard, which I would, naturally, lift from a stage musical - “hanging with the right cohorts, being good at sports”. Despite Test Tube’s optimistic support (She tells me, “You could be a delightful asset to a checkers team!”), I unquestionably fail at both of these. It makes me question, do fame and notoriety really matter in the grand scheme of things? To answer in short: "Lolnope". Any sane figure would lecture you about these values, probably the same shreds of sentimentality I'd have shared with you before I joined this series. Would I be biased to claim popularity is irrelevant since I’ve never been too popular myself? Well, luckily we don’t have to worry about that. Like I said, seven whole people are reading this right now! Yet alas, you start to think outside the box once you're on a reality show where viewer vote dictates who stays and who goes. Seriously, the status quo around here is basically be well-liked or be forced to bid adieu prematurely. It makes you hold a lot more value in the things people say. I’d love to just write off users like Fanisworsethaneverything237, but his vote might be what stands between me and a million, life-changing dollars. Not to mention this game basically revolves around a series of social situations, which I'd much prefer to look for any reason to stay out of, for, well, obvious reasons (#self-deprecation). But even after volunteering to get away from the action and stay in the comfort of a soccer goal, the world seemed like it was still tearing me apart… literally. It’s really all too easy to fall into the trap of believing popularity is all that matters when you're trapped under the bubble of a reality show, or some high school, or heck, even box office totals. Yeah, the hilarious new installment in one of my favorite franchises was released last weekend, but made less green than from what I’ve been hearing is a poorly executed young adult novel adaptation. Yes, yet ANOTHER one of those, I mean, that market’s really starting to become bloated. To avoid possible fan outrage I'm not going to say any names, so I diverge, er, digress. It really goes to show, people only like what they've come to know. They want the same thing over and over again, like an assembly line. Or "__ Run" game apps, which ironically, are so numerous I find I can’t run FROM them. Sigh… not everything can be as unique as this book I’m planning involving a love triangle amidst an effort to survive a dystopian future! Working title is “The Disparate Games”, keep an eye on the shelves. When something fresh or original like that comes along, not many people care. That is, unless word of mouth kicks in from some well-respected sources that tell people what they should like. Then all of a sudden the initial popularity starts… I don’t know, compounding continuously, there's a math formula involved, it escapes me. And this “formula” changes every day. So if it's temporary, what does popularity really mean? Well while I'd love to say absolutely nothing, I must admit that is not the truth. Being popular means having connections and opportunities to have doors opened for you. But I can say that even if it’s not nothing, it’s also not everything. You'll be kicked out of those doors if it's made clear you're not actually as good those connections implied. There’s a big difference between these “coattail riders” and “climbing risers”, as I like to call them. Sure, you have limits now, and your outlook may seem hopeless, but carrying a sense of self-awareness is the key. Always be yourself, but try to be conscious of how others might react. Just don't let those reactions mold you into some convoluted mesh of various others’ expect

oh if it isn’t this new person who i have absolutely no connections to

(for the 6 other people reading, he’s on my splatoon team and i made them read the fic and told them to maybe send an ask even though they don’t know homestuck :P)

etho is kind of a funny guy in this fic because he was basically not even in it until the last week of writing. there’s the small section of chapter 4 where he’s accompanying skizz and has like 2 lines. but at some point while writing i realized “OH SHIT FUCK FUCK ETHO BARELY EVER SHOWS UP” but i figured out a way to give him a moment in the last chapter and everything”s fine. and the lack of uh, relevance he has to most of the plot is reflected with his classpect!

etho is the heir of void which is. sort of a classpect used in canon homestuck as equius’s title, and generally means “one who becomes (surrounded by) nothingness”. for equius it meant that he quickly faded from having any relevance or screen time in the narrative, and it means the same for etho here.

i’d like to think this is in part because he really does disappear from all discussion or events at some point in 3rd life, but honestly it might be a bit biased from my perspective? i didn’t watch any renchanting POVs when 3rd life initially came out, so from what i saw back then it didn’t look like etho was there at all lol

his land has a bit more of a story to it, though. my beta .khads suggested it being some sort of dark oak forest pretty early on, when i had barely figured out anyone’s land names. i decided on “trees” as the first noun. and you know how long i stayed undecided on the other noun? Over A Month.

at the halfway point, my lovely artist @anachronistic-cat was assigned to me and i sent them detailed descriptions of each player’s land for drawing inspiration. etho’s said something like “land of trees and ???? (i have no fucking idea what to do)”. cat suggested that the second word could be “nothing”, and i took this and ran with it- made it into a forest with no grass or animals, which basically isn’t even a forest. in chapter 9, etho describes the lack of basically anything there as being unnerving and out-of-place.

so i figured out how to make it cool after all!

my apologies to all the ethogirls out there. i have much to learn and many videos to watch. i promise most of the others are more interesting than this

Rin too, he was like "so what if I fucked my sister? Watchu gon do?" Didn't even tried to deny it or anything. "Not like we're blood related so it's fine. Plus it's none of yo business" then proceeds to almost break his arm lmao (yeah, I'm biased to the big brother trope \⁠(⁠ϋ⁠)⁠/⁠♩)

I guess I wanted to add more personality to my characters, because I didn’t just want them to knock-offs of the actual game’s characters lol That would explain why there’s some scenes that I added, and some scenes that I deleted because it’s too much—For example, the CPR scene ☠️ God, I hated that scene, it felt like I wanted to slip in something there for the teacher because he doesn’t have much scenes to prove himself as a worthy interest, but it felt so out of place?? I hate how you remember it too 😭 I don’t even remember posting that?? I thought it was forever a draft lmao

I really immersed myself into the characters sometimes, and try to maneuver my way into thinking like the characters. Obviously, if your stepsister is there, things will be awkward and if you’re a gossip bitch like Neru, you’d want to keep talking as much as possible lol Just for the drama~

Kaede was always been the first choice in my mind ☠️ I could not imagine how the game or plot will function further if it wasn’t Kaede lol

Maja’s STRAY KIDS Concert experience and thoughts (aka probably just me fangirling)!

Under the cut, cause I don’t know how long this will turn out to be.. Will also include some of my bad pics lol

September 17th 2022!

The day my mind was blown to oblivian, cause Minho THE MINHO is actually real, like what an actual wild concept. Not in like a “I don’t see him as a real person” weirdo kind of way, but in a “I have only ever seen this dude on a computer screen and it’s wild that he actually exists” kind of way. It’s the same for all of the members of course, but I am nothing if not Minho biased lol.

Ever since the evening the day before the concert, I was so freaking nervous. Like one would seriously think I was the one performing, that’s how nervous I was lmao. Guess it was the realization that I was actually seeing my dude of all dudes (read ultimate bias (sorry Seonghwa)) irl. Even now, just thinking about it makes my stomach turn lmao. I still can’t believe it.

I had a way better seat than I expected, and I really felt like they were SO close even though I was on the second floor. It was truly wild.

When the concert started I seriously couldn’t do anything, but watch in awe. I was literally just shook SHOOK! They started with Maniac and Venom, which has never been my favourite songs, but they were absolutely amazing. AND THEN THEY DID RED LIGHTS AS ONE OF THE FIRST SONGS, LIKE WHAT THE HELL. Can’t believe one of my first looks of skz irl is them tied up by their necks??

When they said hello, I was just out of it. It was truly like an out of body experience, I could not with my excitement lol (in reality I just kept on saying “wahh” every five minutes).

Minho was of course Minho, and when he greeted us, he was like “you already know my name”ish and got us to yell his name, but then he was like “No, there’s something missing at the front” and everyone was like “???” and he was like “I’m Stray Kids’ Lee Know” as if we could know that was his intention. I love him and he is just ethereal and his humor is just amazing. Also, I have never been more happy to know Korean than I was at this concert. It really made it so much more fun, cause the members were all hilarious!!

I don’t remember what it was, but at their ment, Chan said some kind of joke and Felix just went “Ah, how fun” in the most dry tone ever and everyone laughed. He seemed to be confused tho, cause I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean for it to be that dry lol.

Then (I think it was now?? Oh well) Minho and Seungmin were charged with having to introduce the new song, but it was just them meowing and barking at each other?? Minho got so red lmao. The song was Easy lol. Apparently the thing was that it was very easy to guess? Which it really was not.

I don’t remember everything in the correct order probably, but who cares lol. They also said they were going to try something new, and that the people on the second floor (aka me) would also get to see them close! So every time the light went out, everyone was just waiting for where they would appear again lmao.

Y’all, I got to hear CHEESE live? Like damn, absolutely amazing! I love CHEESE lol

They also did Lonely St. with standing mics!! Absolutely amazing if you ask me lol. But tbh the whole concert was, so yeah.

They showed their mashup for the new album and then they performed the three unit songs!! 3Racha began by absolutely slaying, and damn, rapper Bang Chan is back back!!! Then Danceracha went on to absolutely end me. Like my jaw was literally at the floor the whole time. It was sexy sexy sexy. Like Wow but times ten. Who knew that was even possible? And the Vocalracha ended the unit songs, by having the best song ever. It’s such a happy “I really like you!!” kind of song and they absolutely slayed, I can’t wait for the studio version for real!!

At the following ment, Minho was like “I have a question for STAY and you have to answer truthfully! Did you all do the STAY pose, when you met outside of the stadium?” then the other members went on about how it must be embarrassing to do, and Minho was like “I’m in I and I can do it?” and they were all like “You’re not an I. There’s no way you’re an I.” Then they went on to coming up with other things STAYs could do to see if someone was a STAY. Changbin (I think it was him) suggested finger hearts, but they all agreed, that that would be awkward if the other person wasn’t a stay lmao. They ended up settling for doing the skz greeting with eachother, cause that would be easy to play off, if the other person wasn’t a stay.

They also performed Circus and Fam Korean versions!

After they performed Fam, they wanted to hear us yell their names but without the in-ears in. It went like *Chan says his line about I.N and we yell “I.N”* and everything went great until it got to, when we had to yell Hyunjin’s name. This is where, some people have probably seen the video online, if not you can find it HERE! Han said his line about Hyunjin, but like 80% of the stadium didn’t yell his name and it was just confused silence. Here is where I’ve seen some weird misunderstandings run around on twitter, about how “Korean fans never screams a lot for Hyunjin >:(” and “Why did nobody scream his name? :(” and “The fans didn’t know they were supposed to scream the names”, but take it from someone who was there and didn’t scream his name at first, it wasn’t like that at all. It wasn’t some weird “Korean stays don’t like Hyunjin kind of thing” like what even? It was just confusion! Han said his line which was just “Artist”, but it sounded so much like he said “I.N” and everyone was confused, cause we had already screamed his name once. That’s really all there was to it. So Han just repeated his line and everyone screamed “Hyunjin” really loud after that! It wasn’t at all any ill-feelings towards Hyunjin. It was just pure confusion lmao!

At one point they got into some carts(?) I’ll call them carts lol, and they drove around between the second and first floor! They were so close, like what even. They were like really really close, I still can’t believe it..

As it does at every concert, they have to say goodbye, and Han was tasked with the role of being the one to be like “We really want to stay, but...” and we, the fans, were all like “Awww :(” and Han was like “This makes me the bad guy” and everybody laughed.

Between them leaving the stage and the encore (Is it really an encore, when everyone know it’s going to happen?) there were three STAY games. The first one was, the camera filming someone in the audience and that STAY had to immitate the pose on the screen. Then the next one was immitating the dance and doing an ending fairy, and the last one was just for everyone to scream as loud as they could lol. That was also a reorcurring theme in the concert. The members kept on being like “that’s not enough” and making everyone scream even louder. No wonder my throat hurt when I got home lol.

They came back for the “encore” and they performed HAVEN!! MINHO’S VOICE IN HAVEN LIVE!! VERY IMPORTANT!! I absolutely am in love with him in a non delusional way, of course.

When they did their ending ments, they were all so happy. They were all talking about how it was a dream to perform at the KSPO stadium, and how STAY made that dream come true and how thankful they were. Felix talked about how it was the first time they were able to get that close to the fans (when they went in the carts and had to literally walk through the fans to get back to the stage), and he had never seen the love in the fans eyes that close before. He said he wondered if he really derserve all that love, and I can tell you he does! Am I tearing up writing this? Maybe.. Chan said all the fans were like 🥺🥺 looking at the members that close, and it was cute and there was so much love.

Minho was very serious in his ending ment. He said it’s good to be serious sometimes. He talked about how, when he got back from the US after the tour, he had some time to himself and he kind of had an identity crisis? He said he thought a lot about who he is. Is he Stray Kids’ Lee Know or is he Lee Minho? He said it’s very important to take some time to yourself and be serious and think about stuff. He said that STAY should also take some time for themselves sometimes!

At the end nobody wanted them to leave and they didn’t want to leave either. Chan kept on asking if they should just start from the beginning again, and he started imitating the sound of the intro to the concert version of Maniac, and some of the other members joined in. In the end, they did have to go. Felix was the last one leaving and he kept on yelling “I love you STAYs” and it was just really wholesome.

Anyways I love them a whole damn lot. I still can’t believe I saw them live. I didn’t really know how to feel, when the concert was done lol. Surprisingly I didn’t cry at the concert or anything, cause I think I was in lowkey shock lol. I was yesterday too, but now, writing this long post, I am suddenly really emotional and touched lol. This was a big day and I enjoyed every single second of it (even though my buttcheek kind of hurt from the hard seat lol)!

I love Stray Kids and Lee Minho a whole damn lot. That’s just the end of it.

Honestly I like what your saying about not changing bkuestar’s warrior name.. it’s just that I hate the pelt, fur and foot suffixes..they so.. boring I guess… and lazy to me? I mean like being name after your hair is just… boring I guess I don’t know.. and foot…I hate that especially since like they been paws for awhile your about ti get your warrior name.. and it’s just the same thing… you are name after your paw after spending months wondering what your warrior name is

I definitely like the name snowfang or maybe even snowflight (since you say snowfur is a lot like squirrel) for bluestar… I probably change her to bluepool, bluefern,or even Bluetuft (since that’s as close to fur as I can get without thinking it’s lazy)

one: consider a yearbook. three percent of my graduating class was named matthew. three percent! you need boring/normal names. it's How Societies Work. okay: uh societies are all very unique and my brain is throwing a warning light at me so i assume i've read about a society where everyone has a unique name or something but like.

c'mon.

the cats are english; my point stands.

two: the fact that the name is boring is the point. some cats are boring.

frostfur isn't special. dustpelt isn't special. (i'm ignoring foot.) bluefur and leopardfur? they weren't special. they weren't born w a special destiny, they weren't prophesized, they were just. good warriors.

that's it.

their suffixes HIGHLIGHT their ambition because they're not fireheart, who, might i remind everyone, was a kickass fighter. they're not, uh, fuck, squirrelflight, who discovered the lake territories. they're not greypool and willowbreeze, two openly halfclan cats.

they're Not Special.

that doesn't work if their names aren't boring.

three: foot! foot is not a boring suffix? let's look at some arc1 and tangential foots. deadfoot. mistyfoot. blackfoot. leopardfoot. ashfoot.

leopard and ash are just...given foot (frankly, leopardfoot's whole name is a mess), but the other three have a specific reason for it: their appearance. (but matthew, mistyfoot isn't--- greystripe isn't described as a tabby in the allegiances! it's his name!)

okay this is going to sound weird but ig you're projecting your biases onto this? dlfa;jkd this is so silly because it's fandom nonsense, but what i mean is, there's No Reason for cats to be upset at getting -foot.

it's NOT the same thing. -paw is for apprentices. -foot is for warriors. it is very, very, very much not the same thing.

i love how everyone has like fancy real meanings behind the names of their ocs like word meaning and stuff and im here like heheh yeehaw heheheh girl is boy? heheheh name sound pretty, good enough

alright i so let’s start, this is gonna be long lmfao cuz i can’t resist but do all of them TwT

The name Veronique is girl's name of French, Greek origin meaning "true image". The name Ronnie is both a boy's name and a girl's name meaning "she who brings victory; true image".

I always loved gender neutral names and the idea of “opposite gendre” names for a lack of better terms. Like for example naming a boy Adelaide (Ada for short) or Eloise (El for short) or for a girl, Luca or Elliot. And seeing as any character I create, the world is literally my oyster, I can do whatever I want hahaha. This kind of ends up being a theme for a few of my ocs. They’ll probably have say a feminine name (being a girl) but their nickname will be more androgynous or gender neutral. Ronnie for example, short for Véronique. I went with Véronique because seeing how Ronnie was quite the self insert when I was making her, literally everything about her is inspired and based off me. Her looks, her ethnicity and race, personality. But I didn’t want to give her my name cuz well I don’t care much for my name lol. So I went with the next best thing, the name that I would’ve been given if I wasn’t named what I was, the second choice if you will: Véronique.

I also knew damn well that Véronique is a long name and I can’t possibly be saying her full name all the time lol. Plus it’s french, I have much too many years of experience with people have difficulty saying or reading my name properly and well I didn’t want that for her even if she is fictional lol. And personally I always wanted nicknames, my name’s three syllables yet I’ve never been given a nickname by anyone really, I’m always just the same 1 name always which bores me considering no one besides my parents and myself say it correctly ahaha. So I knew I wanted to give her a nickname, cuz if she’s basically me, I’d think she’d have the same views about her name. How many non french speakers can pronounce a french r and not be intimidated by an accent😅. Now taking the whole gender neutral thing into account, I didn’t want to go Véro, which is the typical nickname for her name cuz well it’s still difficult, so I experimented and found myself really liking the name Ronnie. Sure enough Ronnie worked for the her so I settled with it, and I still love it lol. (I also took inspiration of the name “Ronnie” from Ronnie Radke from Falling In Reverse lol I like their music)

Kana is inspired by me giving her a half asian background, I guess this last name makes her Japanese haha. Like I said I she’s very much me, half French, half Asian. Thinking about her last name, I always loved the Japanese culture, I’m an anime indulger, I love Japanese names. And at the time I was stuck between whether to name her first name Véronique (Ronnie) or Kana, and for a time her name would switch from Ronnie to Kana a lot. But I could never think of a last name. So it dawned on me that I can give her both the names I wanted to, my slow small brain just didn’t catch on very fast the Ronnie still needed a last name hahaha. Kana is also inspired by one of my favourite anime’s Fruit’s Basket (specifically the 2001 version, I am biased towards that version for nostalgic reasons🥲🤲💕), and my favourite character in the show Hatori. And Kana was the name of his wife and well me being a Hatori simp I was like “um I wanna be his wife??🤨🤨🤚🤚” lmfao

1000% stole the inspiration of her name from the pirate Anne Bonny because I’m obsessed with Uncharted (especially uncharted 4, for reasons…*looks at sam and rafe*…….reasons..) I was also visiting family in Calgary at the time of Stampede and well yeehaw cowtown lead to me rewatching Yellowstone for the spirit and I fucking love that show so much. Fell back in love with the wrangler Ryan from that show HAHAHA and decided fuck it I’m making another cowboy oc who will double as an RDR oc. But she goes by Annabelle Jones for RDR, nickname Elle. Idk why I just thought Elle was a cute and pretty name and also I had too many cowboy name ideas for Annie’s last name that I had left over. Deciding I’d change her last name to Jones and also change the nickname. My godmother and I were looking at cowgirl names after we went to stampede the first night to watch barrel racers being like “ok we gotta give ourself cowgirl names now” and so we thought about it. I settled on Lucky Annabelle Bonnie (as i said inspired by anne bonny but then it was also encouraged after I saw a “what’s your cowgirl name” generator thing that had both the names bonnie and annabelle on it and I was like well perfect, imma do that). And then proceeded to make an oc and though hey, in spirit of yeehaw, why don’t I go ahead and make my long awaited RDR and Yellowstone oc lol

I always loved Persephone, her character, her story, her power and everything about her. And I also loved her name, I think it’s one of the prettiest names out there. When choosing Seph’s name I just kinda went into my mind’s collections of names that I love to pick out which name I could give her lol. Landed on Persephone because I always wanted a character named Persephone and then of course I had to give her a nickname. I love odd names, unique ones, ones you don’t really go for if you were to be picking nicknames yenno? Honestly now that I think about it I feel like Seph is probably the go to nickname for Persephone but I’d never heard it be used before so I thought it was cute, and not well known. But it was easy enough to pronounce, not long like if I were to have gone with Sephone which was one more syllable, have I mentioned I’m lazy? Seph just sounded cute and I hadn’t heard it before so I was like bingo that’s the one. Wilde comes from the idea of uncharted as a whole lol, they’re always out in the wild yenno? Adventuring, treasure hunting in unknown places. Jungles, forests, mountains, oceans. So I thought the name Wilde would be cute, and considering it is in fact a name, it worked out lol. I also wanted a name that sounded good with Sam Drake’s but that’s besides the point👀

Redraven I found on some dnd name generator that I thought fit her perfectly considering she’s a bright dark red ginger lol and sounded pretty with her first name. Persimmon I chose cuz I knew I didn’t want anything basic or boring lol I wanted a name that wasn’t usually found to be a name. A word that if not introduced as someone’s name, you’d think it’s not supposed to be a name. And well a persimmon is the colour orange, and she’s a ginger, so two and two together lol. And I love persimmons, they’re sweet and taste good so I was like lemme give this sweet name to a woman who has a secret sweet and soft side. And again the whole “androgynous/gender neutral name/giving a girl a boys name” ordeal with her nickname. I thought about going with Monnie, but it felt too feminine lol and I wanted something less so. Also Monnie sounds like Ronnie and I was like well I’m not creative am I AHAHAHA. So I went to the other half of the name and settled for Persi. I loved the way it sounded, I felt it fit her perfectly. And well it definitely fit the “you hear this name and think it’s a boy? HAH WRONG this character is actually a woman, who woulda thunk” motif.

I get the “older” actors thing but Chris Evans is actually talented. Many don’t know of his non Marvel movies. Wrong actor to use that against. Dude has been acting since he was a pre teen. I advise to go watch Snowpiercer, Sunshine, The Ice Man, Defending Jacob, Gifted, and Knives Out. I know people talk about his looks a lot but he’s given some great performances that should not be shunned just because people think he’s hot. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway. Dude wasn’t randomly spotted or knew someone who knew someone, he went after a dream and put himself out there not knowing if he would be successful or not, on top of that he’s gotten this far, has a beautiful career while battling mental health issues so yeah that’s a win for me. He’s good but could be great and I will say he’s a natural in front of that camera, especially in comedy….the movie the losers, his character was a great comic relief. If you have time look up the movie Puncture and tell me what you think. 😊

I think new Gen Z actors and some older ones….. and the ones where you see them all the time but can’t even name one show or movie, or you finally watch them in a film that was hyped up and you watch their performance and it’s like…..seriously? Many actors today lack charisma AND talent. Or you can tell acting to them is just reading words back. But others I see potential of greatness …they just need a better roles or more experience. An actor who is talked about a lot but I can’t tell you one performance that has made me go …wow he’s talented is Michael B Jordan. 🤣

I mean, I've seen Knives Out and he didn't bother me...but also he didn't particularly stand out to me? Maybe I was a bit harsh saying he only gets the roles for his looks but I've genuinely never seen a single scene with him in it where I thought: 'wow, no other actor could have done this like him' or 'I got to go back to see that film for him!'

There are sometimes scenes in movies where I actually skip back and watch the same scene or line several times in a row, just to see that again or hear that again. And there are many scenes that are just legendary on their own for the acting that's being delivered.

And to me, I never had that kind of moment with Evans. Which, again, maybe I was being a bit too harsh saying it's just about looks. It's okay. He gets his job done and it's not like he shatters my immersion or does anything that really bothers or annoys me. He's just there and does his performance. But (taking the example of Knives Out which I did watch two times) - the performances I think of are Daniel Craig's. Jamie Lee Curtis'. Christopher Plummer's. And again, Chris Evans didn't bother me or annoy me. (and in fairness, the plot calls for him to not stand out much for a large chunk of the film).

But if they announced tomorrow, that they were going to remake Knives Out, I wouldn't have any second thoughts or feelings on them recasting that role, while (for example), having another actor fill the shoes of Daniel Craig in that one would have me at a bit of 'but that's Daniel Craig's role??'

I googled Puncture and it genuinely looks interesting to me from the description, so I might give it a chance. Plus, I've read one review that really praises his performance and compares him to Al Pacino.

Tbh, I've only seen Michael B Jordan in one episode of House and Black Panther. I don't really remember him on House but that doesn't say anything imo because I barely remember anything after season 6-7 when the show got bad. I do think he was solid in Black Panther (although I might be biased because I really liked his character). I was actually planning to check out Fahrenheit 451 (the tv-show) at some point where he plays Montag (which is a character I hate, so I'll be less biased lmao) but I was kind of held off because what I've seen of the lighting and scenes and the whole...cyberpunk vibe didn't really fit the vision I had when reading the book which was a less glossy and elegant... and the tv-show gives me 'hey, fellow kids, we made this classic look coool'-vibes. but I digress).

I feel like Black Panther is a good example for what I'm trying to say (though what I said isn't about any singular film. Of course I'm not opposed to films about young people) though because as a movie, it had many great performances! Chadwick Boseman was amazing in his role! His scene with his father on the ancestral plane, the way he portrays that feeling of betrayal and upheaval is definitely one of those scenes that I love to linger on and watch two times, three times, because it is just genuinely really good acting. It's probably one of the strongest scenes in the MCU.

But also, another performance that really stood out to me was Angela Bassett's and I feel like she doesn't get enough credit for it. She's so authentic and effortless. She can communicate so much with just her eyes - she's absolutely convincing in the way she balances the warmth and the composure of her role. And she brings that same authenticity and complexity to her characters on AHS (literally every scene with her and Jessica Lange in Coven is just ??? so good??). You can just tell that she brings 40 years of acting experience to the table - and knows how to use that experience to really incorporate traits and features into her character in a way that just...doesn't feel like acting at all. It seems so natural. Even just wearing the costumes she does in that movie and moving and acting in them in ways that make you go: 'yeah, this character has been wearing clothes like that her entire life' is already a big feat of acting.

There are actually a lot of scenes in Black Panther that make me wish there were actually fewer other characters on screen because it would have put more focus on Angela Bassett and more time to just...see her act/give her character more independence from the other characters around her, but she's just not given that position. Which is fine, because it's T'Challa's story.

My problem really isn't with any singular show or film - but the overall tendency that the industry has to place older actors with a lot of talent and experience in the backseat. Which isn't a problem when you have strong actors in the main-roles - but it does become a problem when you sit there through the main-characters' plot always wishing to see their grandpa give an Oscar-worthy performance in his chair by the fireplace again.

#I actually googled it and I do think it's telling that the average age for Oscar winners in -best supporting role-#is higher than that of winners for lead role. And that is despite many male lead-role winners being over 50.
