Headcanon Height Chart

Here's my head canon line up for the characters along with my reasoning. I'd love to hear how other people picture them!

Actual Data

"The average orc stands six and a half feet tall." (Lore Tablet 1)

"Female orcs are stronger than males." (Lore Tablet 1)

"Elves are taller than humans, standing an average of just over six feet fall." (Lore Tablet 1)

"[Humans are] smaller than orcs and shorter than elves." (Lore Tablet 1)

Assumptions

In the real word, the average person is about 5'4" (5'2' for assigned female at birth, 5'6" for assigned male at birth). I picked 5'6" as the average human height across sexes for conceptual symmetry (about 6 inches between the average height for each race).

In the real world, males tend to be taller than females. I am applying this to humans and elves, but not to orcs, as orc females tend to be stronger (which I'm somewhat spuriously correlating with height).

For the chart itself, it's a general art rule to have a person's crotch/wrists at about half of their height. That put the 'floor' for everyone's full body sprites at about 2 feet. I did not stretch or squish anyone. It looks kind of whack to me, but I have no solution for that.

Character Specific Lines

"You bump into a tall man [Mal] heading out of the village!" (Book 1, Chapter 1) Mal is taller than the average human man.

"An exceptionally bulky cocoon thrashes and bursts apart. Prince Baldur tumbles out." (Book 1, Chapter 9) Baldur is unusually large.

"[Nia] You were puny and insignificant before." and "Leave me alone, tiny man [Mal]." (Book 2, Chapter 12) Valax may just be trying to insult everyone, but I'm taking this as she's taller than both of them.

"The bed's too small." (Book 2, Chapter 17) This could be Imtura just wanting an excuse to go at it on the desk, but I'm choosing to believe she's taller than her mother. I cannot imagine Queen Ventra putting up with a suboptimal bed for herself.

There is this whole idea that flipping a two sided coin doesn't have a 50-50 probability. It's not a new idea by any means, but the explanation is if you measured the mass of the coin, the force of the flip, the temperature of the coin & of the room, the force of any breeze, wind, or vibration in the air as it traveled, and so on, you could accurately determine within a small margin of error what side the coin will land on every time, and if you kept those constant it would flip on the same side every time. And that idea is also KIND OF the explanation for the conclusion in quantum physics that there is no free will.

A lot of people hear that and either clutch their pearls, roll their eyes, or aren't interested either way. (I mean, when you say some shit like that you're just going to immediately turn off any interest most people would have otherwise had but I'm digressing now). We all like to think we make decisions and choices, and then amateurs who want to talk about quantum mechanics alienate everyone by saying it's not true: you were always going to make these choices with no chance to make the other one.

But what I said in the first paragraph is something-like (but not exactly) what it means when you hear or read that according to quantum physics we have no free will. That if we had an unfathomable device that has been measuring all the variables of every single particle that was expelled during the Big Bang, with an also-sufficient/also-currently-unfathomable algorithm to plug those variables into, all within a computer that could do all of the calulations for BILLIONS of years, we could compute exactly where every particle was going and where it would end up, including those that make up the stars and planets, that make up the ground and oceans, that make up the animals and plants, that make up your brain and all of the proteins and neurotransmitters. That if it could all be measured and an algorithm sufficiently built then the decisions you make are already determined by the ongoing relationships and interactions the particles that make up your brain had in the past and are having right now.

However, humans cannot measure that, they likely never ever will.

Anyone that tells me they don't like quantum mechanics because something something affront to nature blah blah "they" don't believe in free will, etc. literally doesn't know it's just a rescale of the coin toss description. You still believe coin tosses are 50-50 because you aren't going to measure the variables used to receive an answer, you can still believe in free will because you can't measure the variables used to determine the ultimate path of all particles; I mean, I wouldn't become a theoretical physicist if that meant so much to you but I'm not your dad, do what you want.

A thing that hibike euphonium does so well over and over is express how important everything feels. They're at a specific point in their life where nothing else has ever felt so important before. And it's something that makes me appreciate Aoi as a character so much every time I watch the show. Because she's someone with different priorities and it's something that makes everyone almost uncomfortable with her. She has her own goals that she considers life or death and no one around her seems to fully understand. For her it's her university and for everyone else it's band. Their entire life feels like it's dependent on these few months and it's communicated so well.

Hibike euphonium does such a good job of expressing how important these things feel while still making everything feel grounded. Life keeps going on. Nothing stops when kumiko can't play the section right. Life continues around her but she feels like she's dying. She's failing at the what she's currently defining herself with and it's killing her. But nothing stops for her. No part of her life is slowing down and waiting for her to get it.

very long post about how i as an Australian think the American date structure is silly and confusing under the cut

as an Australian i already think America is pretty funny, like the imperial system is both confusing and incredibly funny to me, but what i really don't get is the way dates are written in America

like.... for context, in Australia, we write days like day/month/year. and i like this because the most important information is the thing you read first. you want to know what day it is, you just look at the first two digits you see and you're done!! in some other counties like Japan and South Korea, they write it like year/month/day, which i also think is ok because it's still in a cohesive and easy to read order. you just go to the end of the date to see what day it is and it's simple!! it's all good! it's easy to read! this is nice!

but for some reason, the dates in America are written like month/day/year and i'm just..... i'm so confused!?!??!? why would you jump to the MIDDLE of the date to see what day it is???? it's so cluttered and jumpy and trying to read it in order is just... kinda irritating. the most important and immediately needed information is shifted to the middle of the date ans then you gotta go back and then jump forward again if you wanna read the whole thing and i'm just. actually bamboozled at that. who did that. who is responsible for that blunder at the workplace. i will find them and i will break their kneecaps and i-

ALSO you have no idea how many times this date format has absolutely screwed up schedules and post dates for me. imagine that there's like an online event or something coming up and they have a schedule for what day they're holding it, but it's just written like 05/03/2024. my Australian ass is going to read that as the 5th of March 2024, but someone in America is gonna read that is the 3rd of May 2024. do you see how confusing this can become. there is zero distinction between the two dates because they're written in the exact same way but have a different structure. this is fine for dates that go over the number 12 or are the same number, but it's still confusing and frustrating, especially when the website doesn't say what timezone setting you're on or won't let you change it (which some of them don't). it's quite a specific issue but it's still an issue and i hate it i don't like it i want it fixed please patch

So it turns out that 8 seasons of The Blacklist is bordering on too much. Not because I don't still enjoy it, but because it's got a relentless myth arc that doesn't have nearly enough resolution the longer it goes on.

I think there's a trope on TV Tropes called the Chris Carter Effect, named after the showrunner of the X-Files, where a show will keep adding onto its myth arc until the show implodes and people stop watching because they don't care what the mystery is any more. It took one turn too many, kept people on the hook for so long that they ate through the bait and decided they didn't want to be reeled in.

For the most part, I think shows that do this aren't wholly planned out. I think Lost was a big example of this in the 2000's, it was written as it was being filmed and the ending disappointed because they couldn't possibly resolve everything in a way that made sense - it was never written to make sense. From what I hear, the X-Files pulled the same move of building up this myth arc even when it was revived. Some shows thrive on that "down the rabbit hole" feeling without actually having an endgame.

I don't think The Blacklist is that kind of show. It is absolutely a "rabbit hole" type show, it's a conspiracy thriller - what I mean is that I think it has an endgame that it's had set in stone since at LEAST season four. The issue is that it just isn't giving up the goods, and the conflict is now being built on top of that tension instead of resolving the tension. It's beginning to get frustrating.

I'm firmly on keen's side in that she's been drawn into this mess #and she hasn't had any agency or any relief from this waking nightmare that the past 8 years of her life has been #people on imdb are going 'shes the worst part of the show just kill her already' and it's so annoying #like she's a flip-flopping primetime TV protagonist. it comes with the territory y'know. she does her job as a character and it's fine imo #that's the worst part of the viewing experience so far - this fanbase that's frothing at the mouth insisting she's the worst part #I'm not entirely happy with her character arc either but the hate is just really shitty #ultimately the way the show handles her character can be poor #lots of character shilling while a list of her manipulating and hurting everyone else keeps adding up. that's a bit frustrating #that being said - as a relative civilian being groomed into the criminal lifestyle by a person who's clearly close to her #but never actually discloses his relationship to her? who is proven to be so deceitful past a certain point #that she can't even trust him after what he had her believe? #and trust me I know what the big fan theory about that is. the reason I'm watching the show is because of that. and I'm loving it #but elizabeth keen doesn't know that. and she's turning to extreme measures just to find closure for a mystery that reddington opened up #just by stepping into her life without telling her why. I 100% side with keen even if her character can be wonky #and her methods aren't great. I totally get why she's like this. and I don't like how other people react to her showing up for 2 minutes #by docking review points for the episode and saying they should kill her off. I'm really getting sick of that

#i was thinking abt his tlj arc again bc of a very depressing thought i had about it last night fjsjdkdksksk #but specifically in the context of oscar saying in the tfa press that it's important to poe to prove himself/his loyalty to the resistance #and then the poe comics doubling down with terex POINT BLANK lampshading that he can't resist playing hero #y'know? and oscar's comments about how tlj is him grappling with learning to go from heroic pilot to leader #and i just. it's done so well actually because he gets SLAMDUNKED in leia's place? he is literally grounded by the narrative bc black one #is destroyed. and he just... immediately falls back into leader mode. like it's THERE it's always BEEN there he's always been capable of it #poe just doesn't think he measures up. everyone ALWAYS forgets that the big failure/defeat that's suppose to happen for a character in #a sequel happens to poe in tfa within the first /12/ minutes of the movie. being a heroic pilot isn't enough. running back into the fire #isn't enough. he gets captured. he can't save tekka. can't save the villagers. #they learn the location of the map. but it IS enough to stop starkiller. #and it is enough to destroy the dreadnaught (which saves their asses thanks to the later ambush) but it comes at a cost: he still loses #people when he truly believed he wouldn't. #but what else is there for him to do besides throw himself in harm's way constantly to protect the light? to fight every battle the first #order throws at him??? #standing back and watching people get hurt? maybe eventually sliding into complacency (like every authority leader he's served under before #leia did)? #but no he gets grounded and he's. thrown into leia's shoes. he covers her hand with his and thinks about what she would do and her theme #still plays softly as he goes through with finn and rose's plan. he stays behind just like leia's always done. had to trust two operatives. #by the time they're loading onto the transports leia's already smiling proudly/fondly at him and he gets his rank back almost immediately #at crait in the novelization (and he's leading things as much as Leia is) #(in the movie). #when he turns around and says ‘follow me’ hes falling on instinct!! hes more confident in that instinct to lead!! #by the time tros rolls around its a fear of not being /as good as leia/ and being unable of doing it /without her/ and leading on his /own/ #that frightens him. not the actual act of leading itself. #i just love him so much #i love him /SO/ much he doesn't get enough credit #or respect. instead we get books bashing him for having a clear arc that allows him to grapple with learning to go from one thing to #another in war (which is glossed over in other media) #or for completely contrived reasons. or have a book that does it's best to just rehash his arc in tlj but terribly with bonus 'people beat #beat him up/tells him he should be dead/calls him arrogant/etc.

How to send an email to everyone in my office asking for things to do without actually doing that

#god when i actually have work to do my job is so fun and interesting and im always learning #but the low times... they are low #alao ive finally been tsrgeted by the manager from Hell for doing something wrong #and i will straight up kill her if we are ever in the office at thr same time #idk how she manages to come to work every day knowing that everyone she wprks with is so god damn dumb and incompetent #she must wonder how we even manage to feed ourselves eith our stupid dumb ape brains #i took 1 fewer measurement than was standard practice while in the field and her response #was so publicly drag me through the mud in an email chain with like 20 people in it #and then try to set up a meeting with ALL THE FIELD STAFF to tell us all to never do it again #like jesus fucking christ it was my first time in the field alone and i did EVRRYTBING ELSE RIGHT #i even purged for the correct smount of time i just didnt measure the water temp frequently enough #and listen i get that it was a mistake. i get why i shoukd have taken more measurements and i get why thats the standard prqctice #but to humiliate me like that and bring EVRRYONE ELSE IN THE FUCKING FIELD STAFF INTO IT #gkd fucking damn i get why half the office wuit when she was the head of our office #thank fuck shes pittsburgh's problem now for the most part #thats not even mentioning the way she was fucking talking down to me when asking me to upload comments to a folder!!!! #i did exactly what she asked and then this BITCH (sorry) sends me a SCREENSHOT and is like 'you still didnt upload them' #and the fucking file was IN THE SCREENSHOT
