Still haven’t seen Episode 3, but I did get to rewatch episodes 1 and 2 with my father-in-law. And y’all. He was smiling and happy the entire time. He was so proud that Diego Luna, a Mexican actor, is the lead and the show is actually good. Seeing him so happy and proud of Diego Luna made my heart swell.

Can I just Say . . . Episode 7
Tonight’s episode ? As brilliant as it was, as always, the ending scene ? I am literally so f*cling proud of Diego Luna and this show. The CONTINUATION and BRAVERY of political and social representation for us Latinos is just phenomenal.
I cannot tell you how many times that I see - DAILY - my people be harassed and bothered by police and authoritative figures simply for just BEING.
The moment that Cassian noticed the gang of guys running behind him? I just KNEW what was coming. It was no mistake either that he was dressed similarly to them as well, a common excuse for police to target Latinos in the U.S. Looks. Also not too mention is “costume” for that scene? He was wearing huaraches!! A Mexican-style shoe!! If that doesn’t tell you what Disney was intending to address then I don’t know what will at this point.
And that’s all the police base it off of. LOOKS. The amount of times I’ve witnessed my people get harassed, searched, and wrongly accused just because of how they’re dressed, speak, and look (skin tone) is more than I can count.
When Cassian kept saying “I’m just a tourist” and questioning why he was being arrested, I felt so much pride in the fact that the creators of this show chose to push these uncomfortable truths onto the audience.
I’ve heard some backlash from racist Star Wars fans around the internet, claiming that Andor is making the police seem overly brutal and immoral, but unfortunately that’s just the truth for majority of the police in the U.S. It’s not a lie.
It happens. And I FRICKING HOPE for every single racist Star Wars fan who dislikes the show because of these topics being addressed and the fact that it is a Mexican playing the lead CONTINUES to feel uncomfortable because my people deserve to have their story told and they DESERVE to have their representation shown.
Also it’s come to my attention, that Clem who is played by a black actor was wrongly accused of throwing the rock and then hung without question. Yet again, another stab at police brutality and racism within the United States. This show just keeps going higher and higher in its beauty and uniqueness. No other Star Wars content has even dared to address these issues and Andor is doing it with such grace.
¡Viva México! Y Viva América Latina!

scandalous beauty - dolores del río - an analysis
“I love my native Mexico but I love Hollywood, too. It has brought me much happiness and yet, while here I have been miserably unhappy also. But through it all I have found myself, my work and my true destiny.” - Dolores del Río
Like Lupe Vélez, Dolores del Río was a pioneering Latina actress, however del Río’s reach was longer. Far from being stigmatized as a woman of colour, she was acknowledged as the epitome of beauty in the Hollywood of the 1920s and early 1930s. While she insisted upon her ethnicity, she was nevertheless coded white by the film industry and its fans, and she appeared for more than a decade as a romantic lead opposite white actors. Returning to Mexico in the early 1940s, she brought enthusiasm and prestige to the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, becoming one of the great divas of Mexican film. With struggle and perseverance, she overcame the influence of men in both countries who hoped to dominate her, ultimately controlling her own life professionally and personally. Her sophistication, style and artistry bewitched everyone from Stella Adler to John Ford, Federico Fellini, and her great friends Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, who proclaimed to be “totally in love with her, just like forty million Mexicans and one hundred and twenty million Americans who couldn’t be wrong.” She was America’s first Latina superstar, and by the early 1930s, she was one of Hollywood's ten top moneymakers. Hers was a charmed life, but not even she was without problems. A child of privilege in her native Mexico, her family’s status was destroyed in the Mexican Revolution, and her desire to restore her comfortable lifestyle inspired del Río to follow a career as an actress. Discovered and promoted by American director Edwin Carewe, her obsessive protector and Svengali, as the “female Rudolph Valentino,” del Río’s aristocratic, Spanish-European background was constantly pushed to counteract Hollywood’s racism against Mexicans; indeed she was generally thought to be one of the most beautiful actresses of her era, and was the first Latin American movie star to have international appeal. She worked for over five decades and paved the way for Latin American stars in American cinema.
Tumblr media
Dolores del Río, according to astrotheme, was a Leo sun and Aries moon. She was born María de los Dolores Asúnsolo López-Negrete in the Mexican town of Durango; she was an only child born to parents who belonged to the wealthy Mexican aristocracy. She was the second cousin of actor Ramón Novarro and a cousin to actress Andrea Palma. They lived the high life in the company of intellectuals and artists. Dolores attended a prestigious school but soon their world was turned upside down, threatened by an insurrection led by Pancho Villa in the region. Del Río and her mother escaped Mexico City disguised as peasants, while her father crossed the border to the United States. When the family eventually reunited in 1912, they did so under the protection of Francisco I. Madero. In 1920 she married the 18-year older attorney Jaime Martinez del Río and became a socialite. Her career got off to a good start when in 1925 when the lauded American director Edwin Carewe was invited to her home and saw her perform and dance for her family and friends. He persuaded del Río and her husband to moved to the United Sates and go to Hollywood to be in his films. While in Hollywood, del Río played a variety of leading roles, from European aristocrat to "native" girl to European peasant.
Within a few years after her arrival, she was a major hit and her appeal was astonishingly broad. She quickly came to command a substantial salary and to exercise control over her choice of films, scripts, and camera angles. Despite the fact that she did not speak English when she first began and had to have the director 's instructions delivered through interpreters, she made the transition to sound films gracefully. Her accent was deemed slight, attractive, and not specific to a particular country. As socially attractive as she was, physically and personality-wise, the truth is that a major part of del Río’s seamless transition into Hollywood is down to racism and white supremacy. While her contemporary (and nemesis) Lupe Vélez was viewed as the "bad Mexican wildcat" (to be fair, her temperament didn’t help this stereotype), Dolores was viewed as the "good Spanish lady." The contrast between the two stars and their degrees of acceptance reflected society’s stereotypical dichotomy between "good" Spanish and "bad" Mexican images– which has its roots in U.S. history. While most Mexicans were perceived as racially inferior, the elite Hispanic Californianas were deemed European and superior while the mass of Mexican women were viewed as Indian and inferior. Californiana women who possessed land and intermarried with Anglo men were depicted positively; they were represented as aristocratic and virtuous and they epitomized "good" women; but this was at the price of denying their racial identity, and being treated as racially superior to Californiano males and the rest of their people. So as such, she soon divorced her Mexican husband Jaime in 1928 and two years later married MGM art director Cedric Gibbons (who happened to be Gary Cooper’s wife’s uncle).
Soon after her marriage, she was romantically linked with actor Errol Flynn, filmmaker John Farrow, writer Erich Maria Remarque, film producer Archibaldo Burns, and actor Tito Junco. However, it was her affair with Orson Welles, who considered her the love of his life, that was arguably her most high profile relationship. She and Welles met at a party hosted by director Darryl Zanuck. The couple felt a mutual attraction and began a discreet affair, which upon eventual discovery caused the divorce between Dolores and Gibbons. Their relationship lasted for 4 years; she ended it when she got word of Welles cheating on her. She decided to end her relationship with Welles through a telegram that he never answered. According to his daughter, Rebecca, until the end of his life, Welles felt for del Río a kind of obsession. Weeks later, her father died in Mexico. With these personal and professional downturns, Dolores del Río returned to Mexico in the 1940s and became a significant part of the Mexican film industry’s Golden Era. She was the muse of director Emilio Fernández and starred most notably in Las Abandonadas (1944) and La Malquerida (1949). On a national and even international level though, Dolores del Río will perhaps always be best remembered for her role in the 1946 classic María Candelaría, which is said to be the film of which she was most proud. It also marked the first tentative steps of the Mexican film industry into the world of serious cinema and was the first Latin American film to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946, where it won the Grand Prix (now known as the Palme d’Or) for Best Picture. After her triumph in her native homeland, she returned to Hollywood and played opposite Henry Fonda in The Fugitive (1947). She continued to work steadily, starring in various TV shows and films until retiring in 1978. On April 11, 1983, del Río died from liver failure at the age of 78 in Newport Beach, California.
Next week, I’ll focus on her one-time lover, an iconoclastic disruptor who took on the conventions of Hollywood and won: the amazing Taurus Orson Welles.

Overall personality snapshot:  She had a large, warm-hearted, extroverted personality that was always eager to embrace life, love and success – in big doses. There was something about her that assumed the divine right to live life to the full, and her intensity and impatience, along with her personal ambitions, pulled her ever onwards into new projects, fresh relationships and greater challenges. She was something of a gambler and had a daring and dramatic spirit which propelled her forward to make her mark, a sense of personal destiny which can only be exciting and noble. And she was prepared to fight for that glorious destiny if she had to, although she would rather simply steal the show and convince everyone with her intelligence, originality, courage and fabulous style. One of her most beguiling qualities is that she was totally lacking in guile and pretense. Although her own personal destiny was what interested her, paradoxically she at first looked for people she could admire and make into personal heroes. Strongly influenced by a favourite teacher, friend, poet, sports champion or movie star, she could then emulate them and learn through experience how to be great.
She loved the process of creating, as well as the applause that came at the end. Indeed, she relied on those adoring strokes and affirmative responses more than she liked to admit. Life without people would be colourless and boring for her. Social interaction was her life-blood – she could be the life of the party, a real ham and an eccentric, ready to take up the most outrageous dare. But when her extrovert escapades dry up, so did she. She may have, in fact, driven herself to exhaustion and then collapse like a child, home from an all-night rave-up. Yet despite her headlong rush into the experience of life, she was not necessarily irresponsible. Daring and highly idealistic dreams worked away inside her and made her want to improve things, to show people the way, and she may have simply taken charge – for a while. Intensely self-motivated, she did not respond well to orders from others, even though she could be quite bossy herself. There is a touch of the preacher inside her, and she approached her work with great enthusiasm and commitment. She needed space to do her own thing, to learn from her own mistakes, and to learn how to impose her own brand of self-discipline. Her innate self-dramatizing tendencies made her a natural for the theater, business, lecturing, the media – areas that involved group interaction and provided scope for her original and iconoclastic ideas.
She had great presence with a strong-featured face and a sunny glow of inner self-confidence and displayed a regal quality in her posture and carriage; was definitely well-built. She sought perfection in whatever she did and could be very critical of herself and her own efforts. In this way, she often became overly critical and pedantic, especially under stress. She was basically an honest person, and it disturbed her greatly when she had to deal with people who were not. Anyone who violated her sense of trust had a very hard time getting it back. It was very important for her to know that she had the security of a guaranteed paycheck coming in regularly. She had an artistic side to her that obviously influenced her choice of career as an actor. Once she had decided upon her career, she was able to (and most certainly did) pursue it with great determination. She had boundless enthusiasm and big ideas coupled with high expectations of succeeding. She was also self-sufficient and broad-minded. Her genuine pioneering spirit, positive outlook and large-scale personal ambitions led her right to the top. She needed to learn to think before you take on a challenge, and all risks should have been carefully considered. She needed to learn to relax and slow down. She was anxious to prove herself both to others and to herself. If anyone said that she couldn’t do something, she defied them to try and stop her. As long as she felt that she was the one in control, she had a high degree of optimism and was fun-loving, loving to play at life.
She had an original mind and used every skill she possessed to gain control of her affairs. She found it hard to let go of the past, and it would have been good if she did so that she could grow. She was willing to tolerate austerity for as long as it was justified. She respected institutions for as long as they served her purpose. She had the ability to judge what was viable or important. She belonged to a generation with fiery enthusiasm for new and innovative ideas and concepts. Rejecting the past and its mistakes, she sought new ideals and people to believe in. As a member of this generation, she felt restless and adventurous, and was attracted towards foreign people, places and cultures. She was part of an emotionally sensitive generation that was extremely conscious of the domestic environment and the atmosphere surrounding their home place and home country. In fact, she could be quite nostalgic about her homeland, religion and traditions, often seeing them in a romantic light. She felt a degree of escapism from everyday reality, and was very sensitive to the moods of those around him. Dolores embodied all of these Cancer Neptunian ideals, when she returned to her native Mexico in 1943, a country of which she was very proud, her decision to return to her roots changed her career. As a Gemini Plutonian, she was mentally restless and willing to examine and change old doctrines, ideas and ways of thinking. As a member of this generation, she showed an enormous amount of mental vitality, originality and perception. Traditional customs and taboos were examined and rejected for newer and more original ways of doing things. As opportunities with education expanded, she questioned more and learned more.
Love/sex life: She had a heroic conception of herself as a lover. She saw herself as strong and in control, the protector of the weak and the saviour of the desperate. Unfortunately, the realities of her love life didn’t always support this notion. Often it was her tender feelings that required protection and her desperate plunges in and out of love that called for a saviour. In order to justify this discrepancy, she often had to be less than honest, both with her lover and herself. The person most likely to win her heart would have been that individual who made it appear as if  she was the champion when, in fact, she was the one crying for help. Her tendency toward self-deception often extended to a failure to admit to her very natural emotionalism and sexual passivity. Unfortunately, there always came a day of reckoning when she had to “own” her emotional susceptibility and capitulate to her sloppy feelings of dependency and her deep-seated need for affection. The good news was that surrendering everything for love wasn’t nearly as bad as she thought it was. She may have lost her dignity but what she got in return made it all worth while.
minor asteroids and points:
North Node: Virgo
Lilith: Pisces
Vertex: Sagittarius
Fortune: Taurus
East Point: Leo
These points in her chart, however minor, packed a major punch in her sex appeal as well. Her North Node in Virgo dictated that her tendency to dream and be disorganized needed to be tempered by developing more practical and down-to-earth attitudes. Her Lilith in Pisces meant that she was a woman who was a natural born mystic and cultivated her own myth. Her Part of Fortune in Taurus and Part of Spirit in Scorpio dictated that her destiny lay in attaining personal freedom through seeking material security and comfort. Happiness and good fortune came through tangible and practical results that had a solid foundation. Her soul’s purpose lay in delving fearlessly into the unknown. She felt spiritual connections and saw the spark of the divine when she could strip away the outer layers of experiences and get to the core of a situation. East Point in Leo dictated that she was more likely to identify with the need for pleasure (including the potential of liking herself) and comfort. Vertex in Sagittarius, 4th house reveals that she dreamt of the pinnacle of adventure when it came to mating. Her psyche yearned to be carried away to the ends of the earth or to be exposed to every manner of religious and/or philosophical theory known to man and then some. Her yearning was strong and really deep when it came to rarefied experiences of any sort. Encountering and wanting to join with her demanded that she always had an itinerary that will provide her with the maps to explore the roads that they have not yet traveled, to say nothing of the different worlds they have dreamed of but not yet experienced. She had a childlike orientation, in all of its manifestations, toward relationships on an internal level. That implicit dependency and impressionable nature that was instilled in her childhood persisted far into maturity. The concomitant explosions and occasional tantrums when these constructs are violated also accompany this position. She had a need for emotional security and comfort in a committed relationship, no matter how many years it has endured. She often had deep fears, typical of children, of abandonment, as well as a need for protection and universal acceptance, no matter how she acted, which she needed her partner to respect and nurture, rather than rebuke, especially in adulthood.
elemental dominance:
fire
earth
She was dynamic and passionate, with strong leadership ability. She generated enormous warmth and vibrancy. She was exciting to be around, because she was genuinely enthusiastic and usually friendly. However, she could either be harnessed into helpful energy or flame up and cause destruction. Ultimately, she chose the latter. Confident and opinionated, she was fond of declarative statements such as “I will do this” or “It’s this way.” When out of control—usually because she was bored, or hadn’t been acknowledged—she was be bossy, demanding, and even tyrannical. But at her best, her confidence and vision inspired others to conquer new territory in the world, in society, and in themselves. She was a practical, reliable man and could provide structure and protection. She was oriented toward practical experience and thought in terms of doing rather than thinking, feeling, or imagining. Could be materialistic, unimaginative, and resistant to change. But at her best, she provided the practical resources, analysis, and leadership to make dreams come true.
modality dominance:
fixed
She liked the challenge of managing existing routines with ever more efficiency, rather than starting new enterprises or finding new ways of doing things. She likely had trouble delegating duties and had a very hard time seeing other points of view; she tried to implement the human need to create stability and order in the wake of change.
house dominants:
12th
9th
1st
She had great interest in the unconscious, and indulged in a lot of hidden and secret affairs. Her life was defined by seclusion and escapism. She had a certain mysticism and hidden sensitivity, as well as an intense need for privacy. Traveling, whether physically across the globe, on a mental plane or expanding through study was a major theme in her life. She was not only concerned with learning facts, but also wanted to understand the connections formed between them and the philosophies and concepts they stood for. Her conscience, as well as foreign travel, people and places was also of paramount importance in her life. Her personality, disposition and temperament was highlighted in her life. The manner in which she expressed herself and the way she approached other people is also highlighted. The way she approached new situations and circumstances contributed to show how she set about her life’s goals. Early childhood experiences also factored in her life as well.
planet dominants:
Mercury
Sun
Venus
She was intelligent, mentally quick, and had excellent verbal acuity. She dealt in terms of logic and reasoning. It is likely that she was left-brained. She was restless, craved movement, newness, and the bright hope of undiscovered terrains. She had vitality and creativity, as well as a strong ego and was authoritarian and powerful. She likely had strong leadership qualities, she definitely knew who she was, and she had tremendous will. She met challenges and believed in expanding her life. She was romantic, attractive and valued  beauty, had an artistic instinct, and was sociable. She had an easy ability to create close personal relationships, for better or worse, and to form business partnerships.
sign dominants:
Leo
Aries
Virgo
She loved being the center of attention and often surrounded herself with admirers. She had an innate dramatic sense, and life was definitely her stage. Her flamboyance and personal magnetism extended to every facet of her life. She wanted to succeed and make an impact in every situation. As a Leo dominant, she was, at her best, optimistic, honorable, loyal, and ambitious. She was a physically oriented individual who took pride in her body. She was bold, courageous, and resourceful. She always seemed to know what she believed, what she wanted from life, and where she was going. She could be dynamic and aggressive (sometimes, to a fault) in pursuing her goals—whatever they might be. Could be argumentative, lacked tact, and had a bad temper. On the other hand, her anger rarely lasted long, and she could be warm and loving with those she cared about. She was a discriminating, attractive, thorough, scientific, hygienic, humane, scientific woman and had the highest standards. Her attention to detail was second to none and she had a deeply penetrative and investigative mind.
Read more about her under the cut.
Dolores del Rio was the one of the first Mexican movie stars with international appeal and who had meteoric career in the 1920s/1930s Hollywood. Del Rio came from an aristocratic family in Durango. In the Mexican revolution of 1916, however, the family lost everything and emigrated to Mexico City, where Dolores became a socialite. In 1921 she married Jaime Del Río (also known as Jaime Martínez Del Río), a wealthy Mexican, and the two became friends with Hollywood producer/director Edwin Carewe, who "discovered" del Rio and invited the couple to move to Hollywood where they launched careers in the movie business (she as an actress, Jaime as a screenwriter). Eventually they divorced after Carewe cast her in her first film Joanna (1925), followed by High Steppers (1926), and Pals First (1926). She had her first leading role in Carewe's silent version of Pals First (1926) and soared to stardom in 1928 with Carewe's Ramona (1928). The film was a success and del Rio was hailed as a female Rudolph Valentino. Her career continued to rise with the arrival of sound in the drama/romance Bird of Paradise (1932) and hit musical Flying Down to Rio (1933). She later married Cedric Gibbons, the well-known art director and production designer at MGM studios. Dolores returned to Mexico in 1942. Her Hollywood career was over, and a romance with Orson Welles--who later called her "the most exciting woman I've ever met"--caused her second divorce. Mexican director Emilio Fernández offered her the lead in his film Wild Flower (1943), with a wholly unexpected result: at age 37, Dolores del Río became the most famous movie star in her country, filming in Spanish for the first time. Her association with Fernández' team (cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, writer Mauricio Magdaleno and actor Pedro Armendáriz) was mainly responsible for creating what has been called the Golden Era of Mexican Cinema. With such pictures as Maria Candelaria (1944), The Abandoned (1945) and Bugambilia (1945), del Río became the prototypical Mexican beauty. career included film, theater and television. In her last years she received accolades because of her work for orphaned children. Her last film was The Children of Sanchez (1978). (x)

Alright buckle in because I have a few things to say about Big Q's stream.
There will be spoilers under the cut!
BUT!
Let me just start off by saying, Quackity hyped the fuck out of this stream and he did not disappoint. It was even better than what I could've imagined and therefore every scene just had me grinning of ear to ear in anticipation and delight.
Of course, I have a lot of thoughts and I might rewatch it again to better understand somethings, but as a c!Quackity enthusiast, you probably know that I have a lot to say.
HOLY SHIT DID I LOVE HOW CINEMATIC IT WAS!!
The lighting, the scenes, the soundtrack, the acting, the cut scenes, everything! It was so well put together and the divisions of chapters made it even all the more enjoyable. As someone who wants to study film, I really appreciated and enjoyed the cinematic elements Quackity added into this stream. It was absolutely insane.
LAS NEVADAS
Quackity put a fast one on all of us who thought it was going to be called L'Vegas, and while I think L'Vegas sounds cool, I think it's cooler that Quackity named it something else. It shows that this is something completely new and fresh. It doesn't hold ties to any of the older civilizations. Also, the fact that we didn't get to really see it?? Just an outline?? And holy hell is it HUGE. I'm so excited to see the actual thing.
Jschlatt
Schlatt coming back wasn't a huge possibility for me until today. The more I talked about what could happen and the more theories I saw, the more I was convinced that maybe he'd come back. I didn't want to get my hopes up though, so I tried not to be excited about the fact that Schlatt might return. AND THEN HE DID. There was his voice with that quote about someone's worse times and then his name was in the "STARRING" and I was just so happy. He, Quackity, and Sam are like my favorite members on the SMP so to see him involved in this was amazing. Also, he and Quackity's dynamic never fails to make me laugh.
MEXICAN DREAM
MD MY BELOVED! I cannot wait to see what Quackity has planned for him because I absolutely love this character and miss him so much. Still a little foggy on what the hell is going on with him or how/why he's visiting Schlatt, but I'm excited to see him in the lore again.
Badboyhalo
I expected to see Bad on the stream, as he and Quackity's relationship was deteriorating over the Egg thing. Big Q had told him he'd continue to get in Bad's way, so I thought that the Eggpire would make an appearance at the casino or something. However, that wasn't the case, it was just Bad having a conversation with Big Q and then being shown the kind of power Quackity has. Let me just say, Bad's acting today was on point. I was genuinely a little scared of him due to his voice. So kudos to him man! That was amazing!
Awesamdude
Of course, I was excited for this stream in part of Sam being involved with the building and whatnot as well. And as always, Sam brought the A-game acting of making my heartbreak over how fucking tired and sad he sounds all the time. He and Quackity's conversation, as an Awesamdad and Duck son enthusiast, made me both happy and sad at the same time. Him not wanting to let Quackity visit Dream after what had just happened and Quackity manipulating him into thinking it was a good idea just,, oh man. And then Sam bending the rules of the prison to let Quackity have weapons in the cell!! AND GIVING QUACKITY HIS WARDEN WEAPONS!! AAAA SAM MY BELOVED.
Quackity
Man, Big Q himself. He's one of the best actors on the SMP, hands down. The way he gets super into character and works around technicalities and bloopers while still being in character?? Amazing. I love his character so much. The amount of layers his character has is just,, amazing but I refuse to call this some kind of villain arc, though it does worry me. HE MADE THE SCAR CANNON TOO!! The suit he was wearing wasn't what I had in mind for Vegas vibes, but it was cool. But all in all it was just an amazing performance on his part.
Dream
God, I hate this fucker (the character). He really thought he had the upper hand in the conversation when Quackity came to visit up until Quackity pulled out the ax. The terror in his voice scared the shit out of me (loud ass mf) but to hear Dream scared? Oh man, that was such a wonderful feeling. He's finally getting what he deserves.
The Story
My dumbass really thought that today's stream was going to be a grand opening of Las Nevadas, huh? Though, I think I enjoyed the stream a lot more because of the fact that I didn't know what was going to happen. I really enjoyed the whole breaking it into chapters though, as a storyteller I thought that was hella amazing. I just had so much fun with this story and I can't wait to see where it leads.
El Rapids
Why the fuck did I get emotional over a fictional country in Minecraft that was based on a Hillary Clinton snapchat vine? Please, that ending was beautiful and I got sentimental about the flashbacks and Quackity moving on from that part of his life.
The ending
WHAT WAS THAT ENDING AND WHY WAS IT SO GOOD?? It scared the crap out of me though because it caught me off guard but I thought it was so cool. The transition was perfect, the chips?? The calendar??? Amazing, showstopping, wonderful, confusing, perfect. I loved it.
All in all though, this stream was amazing. It's crazy to think that they're taking this Minecraft roleplay to cinematic levels. It's so fun and I'm just,, so proud of how far it's come and how creative not only the fans get, but the ccs themselves to do these streams for us. It's just crazy and I love it so much.
I feel like this is just the tip of the iceberg though. This is just the start of something completely new and I cannot wait to see how it unfolds.

Ducktales: The Treasure of the Lost Lamp Movie Reviewcap! (Patreon Stretch Goal)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people! And we have a special review today for two reasons. The first is that this is my second patreon stretch goal review, having hit the 15 dollar goal back in march thanks to my wonderful friend Emma, the same patreon whose responsible for the Green Eggs and Ham Reviews,  who helped me hit the 15 dollar goal.  As a result you fine people are getting three movie reviews each based on a Disney Afternoon Movie with Treasure of the Lost Lamp today, a goofy movie at the end of the motnh for  a weeklong tribute to my favorite dogmandadguy.  Extremley was going to be part of it but the length of this review convinced me otherwise, but I will be doing it this summer so keep an ear out. If you want to help me hit my next stretch goals do yourselve a favor and zip on over to my patreon YOU CAN FIND MY PATREON HERE. My next stretch goal at “OH Look 20 Dollars” would give everyone patreon and not, a monthly review of Darkwing Duck as decided by my patrons, reviews of BOTH season 2 mini series from Ducktales 87, introducing Fenton to the world and blighting it with Bubba before the 2017 series fixed him, and as a brucey bonus added last month a review of Danny Phantom the Ultimate Enemy. And if that wasn’t enough if you help me get to the goal after that at 25 unlocks another trilogy of disney film reviews, this time for the proud family and recess movie and the best kim possible movie, and dcom period, so the drama as well as Bryan Lee O’ Malley’s two stand alone graphic novels, lost at sea and seconds for you Scottaholics in the audience.
The other reason now the shilling’s done. is that the plan WAS to review this back to back with Treasure of The Found Lamp, to the point the orginal review had a whole thing about that, why it was delayed etc... but now that review’s been scrapped all together as something sudden and wonderful happened. After just kinda giving up someone came through with a translation of Della’s first apperance so presumibly i’ll be doing that as part of the build up to mother’s day, and since I still want ot do maternal instincts too, and already had to let the Floyd Gottfredson birthday special slide away as well... it had to go as I want to leave the only open space on the schedule for the lovely person who found the story for me. But this review is still done, i’m very proud of it so join me under the cut won’t you?

Behind The Scenes: Before I get into it i’d just like to note this article from SyFy Wire. It , along with articles I found via wikipedia citations, was an invaluable resource.
The film was an experiment: It was an experiment to see if one of their tv properties could bring in theatrical money, to see if a movie made on a cheaper budget and still rake in decent money, to see if a film could be made being outsourced to several diffrent places, and to see what one of those places, their recently aquiried french stuido, could handle this kind of work.
The film, if succesful would be the first of Disney’s MovieToons line, a series of films based on their shows. As you can tell by the fact only this movie and Goof Troop happened and the Movie Toons label wasn’t applied to that one it very much failed. While the film was warmly recevied by people who liked the show general audiences didn’t turn out for it. As a result the MovieToons label was scrapped, future projects with it were canceled.. but the stellar work put in by the french stuidio lead to it perserviering for several more decades and lead to them working on the Goofy Movie, which we’ll get to later this month but needless to say was a MUCH bigger hit with a much bigger budget.
As for why the film failed... I have two theories. THe first is that parents were stupid back then and didn’t want to pay to see something on the big screen they could see on tv’s. This is a stupid mentality to me as generally a movie of a tv show puts in a ton of extra effort and usually goes bigger and dosen’t go home. It’s a likely theory given most liscened films of the era didn’t do quite well, with all three hasbro films tanking. And look I get Transformers the Movie is cheesy and killed a lot of people’s childhood toys, but damn if it ain’t aweosme.. and also something I need to cover at some point. Thankfully this died out by later in the 90′s with Rugrats getting a hugely succesful if flawed film, a better sequel and a third one that was also a crossover with the wild thornberries.

And even now in 2020 we’re getting the Loud House and Rise of the TMNT movies sometimes this summer, we were SUPPOSED to have gotten the bobs burgers movie this summer but arne’t because Disney is being a dick about it.
Tumblr media
And we got a phineas and ferb movie last year. With this trend hopefully thsi means we’ll get a Ducktales 2017 movie at some point since season 4 left a huge sequel hook laying right there to grab for a feature film.  One final note: The film was conceptually thought up as a 5 part serial like “Treasure of the Golden Suns”, “Catch as Cash Can”, “SuperDucktales” and “Time is Money, something that DOES show as the movie weirdly has act breaks. In a feature film. Yup.
The Guest Cast:
I won’t go into the full cast since I’ve sung Alan Young and Russi Taylor’s praises PLENTY on this blog before, and I plan to go into Beakly and Launchpad’s actors when they show up in the pilot movie. But i’d be remiss if i didn’t talk about our three guest actors for our three new parts.
First up is Merlock voiced by legend and if I had a hall of fame, hall of famer Christopher Lloyd.. I need to get me one of those. Lloyd is of course known for playing Doc Brown in back to the future but has done countless other films, voicework, and other good stuff. Among his MASSIVE filmography includes The Back to the Future Trilogy (Already mentioned it but it bears repeating), Star Trek III, Who Framed Roger Rabbit as the pants destroyingly terrifying Judge Doom, The Addams Family duology as fester, a role rip torn would ironcially play for the animated series made to captalize on said movie, Hey Arnold! The Movie, The Oogieloves in The Big Ballon Adventure (Look everybody needs money sometimes okay?), and Art of the Deal: The Movie, which was not, thankfully an ego filating nightmare made by trump himself but a film made by funny or die parodying his terrible book and having Llloyd return as Doc Brown. TV Wise he’s known for Taxi, Back to the Future the Animated Series, Cyberchase and he most recently popped up on Big City Greens. How I missed that ep I.. do know as I haven’t watched season 2. Gonna fix that later this month. Lloyd is utterly awesome, a great guy and thankfully still alive at the time of this writing, so I was happy to have him here.
Less familiar to me but still known is Rip Taylor, a comedian known for his flamboyant unique way of speech and his marvelous mustache. He showed up in things occasionally and always seemed like the nicest guy and his passing in late 2019 truly is sad. He does a terrific job here but more on that in a moment.
Finally we have Richard Libertini, a comedian I never really saw in anything besides this who according to IMDB was most famous for his ablility to do a foreign accent. I REALLY hope all of them aren’t as horribly racist as this one. We’ll.. get to that in a sec as it’s time for the plot!
A Treasure Uncovered:
We open our film gorgeously. The animation is great in the film, having some rough edges I chalk up to the film’s hectic production, the studio being new at working at disney properties, and the film not being meant for HD. That being said a few rough spots here and there aside.. the film looks ungodly gorgeous. Like most theatrical films based on a cartoon it takes an already great style and makes it look great. It feels like a more fluid evolution of the cartoons look and it’s a shame we didn’t get more movies in this style for both this show and others, ESPECIALLY Darkwing Duck. Can you imagine a Darkwing Duck movie with this lush animation? Hopefully we’ll get one eventually.
So our heroes are going to somewhere in the Middle East. That’s.. that’s all wikipedia gives me and all the film gives me. As usual Scrooge is after treasure in this case the Treasure of Collie Baba, the greatest thief there ever was based obviously off Ali Baba from 1001 nights and that one Beastie Boys song.
youtube
It’s here we find the WORST thing about the film, the thing that makes this a hard one to watch depsite otherwise being pretty good, and that makes my skin crawl knowing i’m a white man and a BUNCH of white guys, Ducktales series creator who did the voice casting for this character, the writers who wrote him, the direector disney them fucking selves who thought this was okay.
The film has some horrible steroytping. It starts with a bunch of backgorund guys surronding Scrooge, with crooked teeth and steotypical voices. This on it’s own is odious.
It somehow gets worse. Then we meet one of our antagonists. We meet Dijon.
Tumblr media
This Fucking Guy
Djon is horribly offensive reminding me of other such luminaries in being ungodly offensive yet somehow getting put to film as Jar Jar Binks (With all respeect to his poor actor Ahmed Best, this is not his fault), Rob Schinder as a Sterotypically asian preist, Skids and Mudflap, Rob Schinder as a sterotypically mexican bandit, The Whitewashed cast of The Last Airbender, and Rob Schinder as a stereotypically asian preist. What i’m saying is Djon is an AWFUL, horribly offensive character.. and that Rob Schinder should be shot up into space, not to watch cheesy movies, he’s not funny enough for that, but instead to be sent to a satlitie that’s liveable, but also filled to the brim with spring loaded boxing gloves. Just tons of boxing gloves that feel like getting punched by a heavewight boxer all hidden... they could hit his legs, his face, his nuts, his face and his nuts, the point is he’s in constnat pain unless he moves carefully.
And lest you think i’m exaggerating for starters this is his design.
Tumblr media
It just screams “vaugely but sterotpyically middle eastern” along with cowardly. The fact he’s also a literal rat is just the icing on the cake made of broken glass, shrapnel and broken DVD’s of Transformers; Revenge of the Fallen. They say if you eat a reveng eof the fallen dvd John Tutoro appears at the foot of your bed and watches you while you sleep.. and by they I mean me. It was a bad bet. I got rid of him with some insese and a bribe of five dollars.
Oh but that’s just design.. when he talks it’s MUCH worse. His voice is like if they took Apu from the simpsons and said “This but MORE offensive”, and his perosnality is WORSE. He’s a thief.. and not in the endearing loveable rogue way but he’s a pick pocket and a running “Gag’ is that he’ll often grab eveyrthing within reahc. As the deisgn shows he’s a coward running at every opportunity. Oh and to top it all off he’s the willing servant of the white coded, given all ducks in this series are white coded and voiced bby white actors, big bad. And the actor is naturally VERY white to make this cocktail of offensivness so complete that if Disney ever got rid of this film I GUARANTEE the republcian party would be running in with accusations of cancel culture gone amok and never shutting up about this like they did the muppets. Which for the record THEY DIDN’T CANCEL THEM, YOUR POINT IS ILLEGITMATE, THEY JUST WANTED TO BE SENSTIVE YOU GHOULS.
I do have a reason for bringing up Disney’s content warnings... most damming of all given just how DEEPLY uncomfortbale this character is.. there isn’t one for this movie. I double checked: There isn’t even wanring notes on the website. It’s just.. on there. And given just how ghastly a sterotype Djon is.. that’s not right. Seriously they DID put them on certain episodes of the show, theyk now this sort of thing is wrong and they done wrong.. but for NO reason they haven’t done so for a film released 31 years ago. Around the same time as the series and just offensive as that show at it’s worst if not more so. This is flatly inexcusable.. par for the course for Disney’s incompetence but still horribly furstrating, disgusting and shameful.. which has been the theme of the last three days really. I expect better because when it comes to putting that warning label on this stuff, they usually are better. First the scheduling mixup and now this. You already do a handful of things wrong Disney why add this to the list?!
Tumblr media
It’s just draining not only to run into another Disney Fuckup after a weekend of dealing with one of their worst in recent memory, but just to watch Djon. To see this horrible caractrure saunter onto the screen and go on with his harmful schtick, to see that THIS is what Ducktales 87 reduced non white people to more often than not.  It’s remarkable just how throughly and awesomely Frank and Matt completely and totally reversed this. Instead of horrible sterotypes in the reboot, we got TONS of loveable people of color, an endearing latino hero, a smart african american buisness woman who takes no shit but is still a consumate professional, and an egyptian HERO with an intresting story and a strong moral code instead of this horrible reminder that racisim in media was such an afterthought not ONE person brought this up during the scyfy wire stuff or in any inteview i’ve seen. No one cared. Djon was POPULAR enough that he got three episode sin the series. THREE FUCKING EPISODES. This film could be GOOD.. but it’s just so bogged down EVERY FUCKING TIME this artists interpreitation of what Tucker Carlson sees when he looks at a middle eastern person I had to pause to compose myself and had to take a break writing this review to avoid tyiping this in all caps and using the phrase YOU RACIST MOTHERFUCKERS every other sentence. And again i’m white, I get this is second hand offensiveness.. I do... but it dosen’t mean I can’t be offended other white people were so callous about other cultures behaviors this happened.
And what makes me feel worse.. is that I just sorta... never thought about white people voicing non white characters. Things like this I noticed sure, I realize now part of the reason I didn’t like this movie the first time I saw it was this alex jones version of a looney tune, but I do feel shame for not noticing or caring long before this. Sure I loved it when a character of color got played by a person of color.. but I didn’t realize just how deep that problem was and how LONG it went on for before the outcry post george floyd and the call to action lead to most shows still going course correcting. It’s why stuff like this extra botehrs me: because THIS was just as okay at the time. No one blinked twice about this and odds are the creators involved still haven’t. And that.. that’s just terrible and it hurts to think about and  I still have most of the movie to go.
The Pyramid of Peril:
So we do get a gorgeous unvewling scene of a box Scrooge found out about from Collie Baba’s horde that should lead them to the treasure. This scene reminds me of Indina Jones.. and I bring this up because the poster was specifically made to mimick an indinia jones poster, to the point of getting drew struzan to do it. THe creator of Ducktales objected..l but I do not get WHY. While I”m not sure if he had yet, Speilberg flat out admits the Carl Barks comics were an inspiration for Indina Jones, with the iconic bolder chase coming from a similar scene in one of Barks Stories. Gotta cover that too. So yeah I don’t get not wanting an indina jones style poster when both were inspiried by the same work and it’s just simple logic and it looks so neat. Thank you.
Scrooge finds seemingly just clothes.. and a map. Jeff Dunham’s Most Racist Puppet reports to his master, Merlock. Merlock is a.. meh villian. Christopher Lloyd does try.. but Lock is your standard evil overlord wants to take over the world type. He dosen’t have much depth, or personality and only his style saves him from dragging the film down along with Dana Carvey’s most racist disguise in master of disguise. He does have a deent shape shifting gimick and being played by Christopher Lloyd means he’s acted TREMENDOUSLY. Alan Young was apparently in awe watching him work and that’s wonderful to hear. The guy did his best. Weirdly Merlock would show up in tons of other works, mostly video games.. but even weirder he NEVER showed up in ducktales 2017. Both Djon and Gene would, Djon thankfully renamed we’ll get to all of that tommorow thank god. I need it after this. But Frank has outright said they didn’t use Merlock because there simply wasn’t anything they could do with him they couldn’t dow ith magica. My likely guess is the might of found a way to revamp him EVENTUALLY, it’s not like radical revamps weren’t there thing come on, they just had way more stories with Magica and didnd’t get around to it before the show was canceled. Just make him some sort of evil god or something. it’s what I might do. There’s a lot of angles with him. Though I would’ve still gotten christopher lloyd back. I mean most of the recasting is good but he’s still alive and deserved a better shot at things.
So Merlock sends Djonn to go with scrooge as his guide to find the treasure, as there’s something of imense power within it. And I gotta ask WHY does Merlock need a minon. No really. This isn’t a situation like reboot magica where he’s trapped in another realm. He can shapeshift into any animal. We only see him use falcon, rat, cockroach and bear but theoritically he can become anything and bear alone is still a LOT. Why does he need this sterotype even other sterytopes ar eashamed of? The film dosen’t NEED Djonn. Just let Christopher Lloyd monologue and leave this post 911 propogranda cartoon at home.
So our heroes nad rejected jar jar prototype head into the desert, and seemingly find nothing before finding a small pyramid all while Merlock follows desecretley as a mighty hawk.
Tumblr media
Scrooge makes the boys and Djon dig... because they clearly forgot the “work hard” part of his ethos.
Tumblr media
Our heroes unveil the pyramid... and while Merlock SAYS he searched the desert and I get it’s hard to see thourgh all of that.. the dude is immortal, had decades to search and had Mickey Rooney there on standby to force him to go comb the desert. I have an artist rendering of that hang on
Tumblr media
So our heroes enter the pyramid and it goes.. really how you’d expect: there’s a bunch of traps our brave explorers have to pass, the boys minintpret a juinor woodchuck saying about loosing your marbles to mean using the ones they actually have which geninely comes in handy as they trip the traps and Rob SChinder as a carrot stumbles into one. Also launchpad is wearing a hawaiin shirt and shades. This has no baring on the plot, but it does bring the movie up a notch in my book and I question why the reboot never used this outfit. Then again they also never properly used Donald’s Quack Pack Outfit (Which bad show or not, is objectively awesome), or his Quack Shot Indiana Jones Riff Outfit, so  it’s not like there isn’t a presdecnt for not giving a character a cool costume change from a previous medium. I really should do a top 12 missed opportunities list for the 2017 cartoon.. the ideas for stuff are really piling up.
OUr heroes eventually find the treasure which has insidiously clever security the more I think about it: at first I thought it had none, just a pit with some... scorpions? I mean their supposed to be but they look like they crawled out of the same stygian hole in the sky Doofus crawled out of. And if your asking me “wait which Doofus” the answer is both. Both these abominations crawled out of a stygian hole in the sky.
But the treasure is on a platform surrounded by scoprions with the only way out being the trap filled way they came in. Unless someone comes in with a full team and a bunch of lootin sacks, they aren’t getting out with EVERYTHING. They can steal SOME of the treasure but there’s no way to get any signifigant portion... and the team thing itself is an issue, something Collie defintely predicted being a thief himself: while some thieves can work well as a team, hence why we have four oceans movies 3/4 damn good, and for the record 12 is the bad one, 8 is how you do a soft reboot and a female led reboot right, a good chunk of professional crooks will turn on each other or try and swinldle... and tha’ts dangerous in a trap filled temple but hey some criminals ain’t so smart.  If they all were Rudy Gulliani wouldn’t have two razzies for preparing to pull his pants down, and have waved his phone around on tv like a dare for future adminstrations to arrest the shit out of him would he?
But Scrooge has his family so they get loading. But not before Webby finds the lamp. Not knowing about it Scrooge has no intrest in it, but Webby does. We also get a really simple but hilarious gag where SCrooge dickers over the idea for a second.. before Webby picks up a Jeweled tiara to possibly take instead. The best gags to me are often the ones that just let the character’s perosnalities take the lead and bounce off each other. It’s why when I reviewed the four lilo and stitch crossovers recently I harped on character interaction as their biggest weakness: it’s what MAKES a good work for me. It’s why my faviorite comics and shows often follow a loveable group of disfunctional misfits. I like a group of big personalities who despite in theory should NOT be able to work making it work anyway. And it’s honeslty what’s made Scrooge last so long: Scrooge on his OWN is awesome.. but iwth the boys, donald, and in the case of this series and the reivival Webby and Launchpad, with people to bounce off of who he contrasts heavily with, from Launchapd’s buffonery to Webby’s inehrent sweetness in both versions, to the boys genuine honesty and sense of adventure.... it makes him truly stand out. He’s a great character on his own, don’t get me wrong.. but it’s the people around him that give him chances to show WHY. A good character on it’s own is fine and dandy.. a good character with other good characters around them is where it gets truly special.
Merlock naturally bursts in and in a VERY Black Heron move needlesly outs what micheal bay sees when he closes his eyes as a bad guy... no really he grabs the guy with his talons as he captures the treasure and reveals he’s a bad guy. I don’t even get why keep Djonn alive. He’s done all Merlock possibly could’ve needed and Merlock is ruthless... this makes no sense and only happens because they need Djonn for later in the plot.
Our heroes barely escape, rafting out on the platform itself in a thrilling sequence.. but it’s the one right after that catches my attention. Scrooge utterly defeated, having searched for this treasure for forty years and unresponsive to everyone else. The anmation, coupled with the incomprable Alan young’s acting makes this the highlight of the film for me. Beneath the armor of wealth and skill.. is only a poor old man who just lost something he’s been chasing after most of his life. Scrooge tries his hardest not to be vunerable and both shows and the original comics all use that so when he truly is devistated like this, and i’ts belivible since this treasure is a personal goal of his and as someone who has had things that they seek out specifically, loosing them always hurts. It hurts to ALMOST reach a goal only to have it crumble out under you
But while this alone is good.. what’s next makes it great. Webby sweetly offers up the lamp. Scrooge turns it down, and her genuine gesture reinvgorates him and reminds us of who he is “I’ll find it if it takes another 40 years”> Scrooge may be bitter, mean and selfish a lot of the time.. but deep down, he’s a good man and one who will not give up, and a momentary setback can only stop him so long as long as he has his family to remind him of who he truly is.. and what’s truly important. It’s genuinely sweet and to me is also a reminder of why 87 Webby is a good character: Shes’ not perfect, her main personality trait is often Girl Sterotype”.. but she’s a genuinely sweet small child with a huge heart. It’s telling that while 17′ Webby is almost completely diffren,t and far better, that heart remains her biggest strength. Sure her reboot self could kill a man nad no one would ever find the body, but it’s her heart and empathy that makes that possible and makes her Webby.  That inherent loving nature is what makes Webby webby wether she’s a toddler having a tea party or a tween getting ready to intergoate a guy with a meat tenderizer while saying ‘Cute girl stuff”.
Gene Genie Let’s Himself Go:
It’s a few days later and this is the point where it REALLY becomes obvious this was written as a bunch of episodes. Though to the film’s credit while it does ake this feel like a compliation movie as a result... it dosen’t hamper the film’s quality, condiment from Rush Limbaghs’ hot dog stand does that just fine, but once you notice it it’s impossible to unotice it. Weirdly though it seems chunked up into four episodes rather than the usual five, likely cutting down an episode, though I can’t see where they cut out material frankly if they did and i’ts just as likely they woudl’ve had to make one to fill in the space.
So Scrooge is in a mood, being grumpy with his secretary Mrs. Featherly, quackfaster in all but name, and having to be sent home. So while Duckworth goes to fetch him Webby polishes her treasure at long last readying for a tea party, something the boys roundly reject because their sexist little twits and swo were the writers or executies who assumed all little boys act the same. It’s easily my biggest pet peeve with the series as a whole: anytime this crops up with the boys it turns them into the worst dicks imaginable. It’s telling this, being mean about her wantin ga tea party with her surrogate brothersi s TAME. Normally they’ll say she can’t do things because she’s a girl or mock her hobies outright instead of just be mildly dickish. And while she dosen’t look much younger Webby is VERY CLEARLY, in this series anyway, supposed to be say 5 or 6 to the boys 8-10. 7 at most. SHe’s a small child and while it is realistic for older kids to bully younger ones, it’s not fun to watch. It’s why I get annoyed at all the big sibling bully characters.. some work, but most aren’t fun to watch because there’s nothing funny or intresting about it. It’s the same deal here.
Thankfully that quickly goes away as the lamp moves when Webby rubs it and does so again to prove it did move. Huey finishes it and we’re introduced to Gene, the best part of the film.  Gene is a Genie and he takes a second to dart around before messing with the appliances in the kitchen, as he was last around during the time 1001 Nights Came About. Cleverly though, and so we thankfully don’t have 80 dozen fishout of water jokes that have already been done before. As you can probably guess i’m not a huge fan of time travel fish out of water stuff. Now from another dimensoin or planet, i’m on board with with Star Vs, Steven Universe and Sym-Bionic Titan being great examples of this, as is the comic resident alien. (Despite having the wonderous Alan Tuduk the show sounds way more mean spirited and misses the entire point of the comic as given by the author in the credits, i.e. that the alien is supposed to NOT be a threat and just be gently waiting for a ride) The inverse is also good with Amphbia and owl house, taking a human and plopping them into our world. But time travel stuff just usually runs the same beats of “look at the shiny thing” and what not. The only time i’ve sene something SIMILAR work is with thor where their society is SIMILAR to vikings time but still it’s own thing.. it also gave us a classic gag in..
Tumblr media
So yeah i’m glad they dropped this and instead had a clever way around it: Gene reads the encylopedia at the mansion. Granted it’s Scrooge so I don’t know how current it is and given this came out in 1990 thus HOW racist it is. It’s not a questoin of IF it was, but how much.
But having caught up the kids confront him with the fact he has to grant wishes. This lamp runs on what I now realize are Aladdin rules: Whoever currently holds the Lamp is the Genie’s master, they only get three wishes, and that dosen’t reset if it changes hands. The only big diffrence from the usual is Gene dosen’t have to TELL them about the wishes like Genie did, and Gene very begrudginly agrees to it. He also seem’s phsyically pained when doing so.
So since all 12 know about him, each of the kids gets a wish though it seems unfair with HDL. Their one person, they shoudln’t get 9 wishes just because their brain is spread out over three bodies.
This film continues the weird simliarties to Aladdin by attaching rules though they instead come up as a result of our heroes talking rather than the Genie just flat out tleling them: both share the “you can’t wish for more wishes” thing, a common rule in these stories and usually only broken nowadays as a clever twist as the rule is SO common place, not having it is a twist. But it is there for a reason: to limit the sheer power of a reality warping wish. The wishes can also only go so far. In a nice line, when Huey, Dewey or Louie suggests wishing for peace one earth, Gene says “No pipe dreams’ He can’t bend people or reality on THAT scale. He can bend reality as we find out, but it’s smaller scales like turning someone’s possesions over ot someone else, warping the bin into a castle, or bringing inanitamte objects to limited life. Still HUGE feats worth of a genie, so Gene’s power isn’t so nerfed it’s unusuable, but it does explain why his evil pervious ownder Merlock, more ont hat in a bit too, didn’t just wish to have eternal dominon over the earth or something. Gene can do just about anything but he can’t change the world on a fundemental level.
And I do LIKE having rules in wished based stories like this, I chalk it up to growing up with Fairly Odd Parents... though they eventually went too far in the oppsoitie direction, pulling rules out of their ass to suit the episode, instead of simply having some very standard, very understandable rules that still pose challenges but don’t outright cheat so the episode can happen.
So Webby does her first wish.. and wishes for a Baby Elephant, something Gene is against as he prefers they keep the wishes small: otherwise he gets found out, and the fight over him begins. So one of the boys wishes him away. Or Webby does. Point is it’s gone though not before Beakly sees it and Scrooge smells something is up. Our heroes try to hide gene, but gene thankfully simply dresses up like a modern kid and thus is able to pass as a friend of there staying for the night.
So with the rules established and what not the kids find a clever solution: they simply go a ways away from the mansion into the woods, far enough from town to avoid any suspcion, and same iwth the mansion and just wish for all kinds of stuff: a giant bunch of ice cream toys, standard kid wish fufillment but it’s nice... in part because the kids treat Gene like one of them. Wihle they STARTED asking him about the wishes, this starts the bonding process. Soon he will be part of the hive mind.. SOON.
Until then though after using another wish to make scrooge not mad at them for coming home late and missing dinner, that night we find out Gene’s backstory.... and it’s an utter tearjerker. As it turns out Merlock wants him back because he’s Gene’s former master and as you’d guess.. it was NOT a happy existnace, used contstnatly to do horrible things with no power to stop himself. Pompeii and Atlantis were both directly Merlock’s fault and it was only Collie Baba stealing the lamp that put an end to his hell. He also answers the two obvious questions botht he audeiince and the boys have: How the hell is Merlock still alive and shoudln’t he be out of wishes then? The first is simple. Unlike pretty much every DBZ Villian whose WANTED to do so, Merlock wished for immortality first chance he got, taking the Zamasu route instead and thus leaving him free.
As for the wishes thing it turns out his amulet, in adition to shapeshifting, also gives him extra wishes becuase fuck it.
Tumblr media
But the boys sweetly offer to protect him.
The next day, Apu’s Cousin let’s Merlock know the maps in the mansion and Merlock has him help sneak in with Merlock taking rat form. This backfires as Mrs. Beakley notices the form and chases after him with a broom
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Webby has her tea party with Gene after he and the boys played cops and robbers earlier, and he’s bored.. though nicely not because it’s a girly thing, but because the stuffed animals aren’t alive and she naively has him fix that. This leads to

Which sadly is jsut scrooge vs a duck toy but admit it, you want that movie for Disney Plus yesterday. Call Charles Band Disney. CALL CHARLES BAND!
Whelp Scrooge Still Sucks:
Scrooge takes for a turn for the obnoxious in the next part, but i’ts fine by me as it’s part of the plot. Naturally this reinactment of Cult of Chucky has lead to Scrooge finding out about the Genie. To his credit, Scrooge is tactical about his wishes. As said by the Duck himself “I could wish for a diamond, no the world’s biggest dimaond, no ten world’s biggest diamond, no a diamond mind, no the MINING INDUSTRY!”
The sheer power this gives him is TERRIFYING, both because of his status.. and because unlike the kids who all wished for simple kid stuff and used up their wishes quickly, he both gets how much he can do with this and could conquer the world economy if he truly wanted to.
The obnoxious part comes in as he treats Gene as not a person, figuring he’s just there and forces him into the lamp despite the kids protests after Gene grants his first wish: Collie Baba’s treasure. It also dosen’t feel like the wishing nor him using the lamp to get the tresure back goes against his hard work ethos: for the former while he is getting all this magically, he’s still having ot use his wits to get the most out of it, and he did earn the lamp itself square. For the latter, he already earned the treasure square too and had it stolen. He’s onlyg etting back what’s by all rights HIS. Granted he plans on giving most of it up for a tax break but still it’s his by right.
However the reason his assholery works is twofold: first it’s Scrooge. While he’s not a TERRIBLE person, in the comcis and this cartoon he isn’t a GOOD person either. He DOES have a good heart and will usually do the right thing, but his first instnct is always to get more money and to be a cantakerous old bastard to eveyrone and everything. While he’s subtly grew out of “I hate eveyrone and everyone hates me” as his guiding principal, it’s still his defualt reaction to most situations. But he first relents by letting Gene attend the party, part of why the Collie Baba thing stung so bad was that he’s told the historical society he’d get the treasure for years only to come back empty handed, if shrunken. But he still manages to have a good time while Asok and Merlock infiltrate.. well I’mRunningOutofINsultingNIcknamesCanYouTell steals the silverware. Yes... that.. that really happens.

Look we’re almost done, i’m almost free of this racist mummies curse. Let’s continue. Gene sees melock and freaks and drags SCrooge with him and while at First Scrooge is cranky...
Tumblr media
No but now I want a Donkey Kong Country crossover too dammmit. And to talk about those games. Another thing for the list. But Scrooge is righ tot be a bit surly...
Tumblr media
Okay now your just pushing it. As Gene whisked him away without telling him anything other than vauge worries... but then he gets a full idea of why Gene’s so terrified when Merlock shapeshifts into a bear and starts breaking the door down. Eh, could be worse.
Tumblr media
Gene shrinks them to escape and Merlock leaves thinking they fled but leaves Skids Minus Mudflap to go look for them. Scrooge sneaks out but bumps into a cart running from the photo you see when you look up stereotype on google. I mean I assume.. let’s try it.
Tumblr media
Huh you know I HOPED but I never expected...
So Google Proving My Point plans to give his lamp to the master because of his weird Torgo-Esque obession with helping a man who clearly wants to murder him but takes his sweet time doing so because plot, and Gene figuring this COULDN’T POSSIBLY go as bad as Melock getting him urges the dummy to keep him and make his own wishes.
This goes about as well as you’d expect....
Wiped Out With A Wish:
Scrooge returns home to find Watto has wished to take his poessions, fortune, everything and Scrooge gets thrown in jail for breaking into his own house. We get two great moments back to back. The first is Scrooge lamenting loosing his fortune in jail, and realizing the sheer power and risk of the lamp, especially since he worked hard to earn it, every bit of it.. and Sam Wilson’s 70′s Backstory came in and took it all in an instant.
The second is Scrooge’s family coming for him, including Launchpad , Beakly and Webby obviously and bailing him out. Though Beakly is UNGOLDLY annoying in this scene, sobbing hysterically and adding nothing and it’s not nearly as funny as the  film thinks. Turns out Goliath getting buried wrapped in chains threw them out.
Scrooge takes a bit to rebound from all this.. but eventually realizes something: he knows the security of the bin inside and out. He had it put in after all. So it’d be easy enough to break in. So they gotta break in to break out the lamp, undo this nightmare, and END THIS MOVIE. Seriously this review has taken two days  as is I do NOT want to miss my invincible review.
So they break into the bin, and it’s a tightly paced Scene, scrooge going in one way while the kids go the other and we even get a nice callback as the marbels come in handy to get past one of the traps. It’s just a good scene. it’s only real flaw is that Launchapd just sorta disappears as does Duckworth despite the fact their in a plane, and the bin later gets turned into a floating castle. Kinda a plot hole to not have Launchpad crash in to save htem just saying.
Scrooge eventually does get to Djonn, whose been ignoring the imminent threat of Merlock while Gene sweats it out... and this backfires horribly as Merlock hitched a ride as a roach (Though there was a hilarious scene of him getting fried constnatly by lasers when Louie went through a laser hallway, as while Louie had the directions, it dind’t take into account passengers on your head.
So Merlock remanifests in full gets the Lamp and unleashes his wrath on Tin Tin in the Congo and turns him into a wild pig.
Tumblr media
Not you sweetie. He then forces Gene to turn the castle into a fortress and float it back to his home in parts unknown. It’s a DAMN cool scene with impressive and horrifiing animation as the bin melts and crumbles into thte castle and the kids barely make it up the stares as they shift and disolve. Really top notch stuff.
Scrooge stands up to Merlock... and this naturally goes poorlyw ith Gene begging Merlock not to respond.. and Merlock having him blow scrooge off the top of the forgtess storm eagle style, though scrooge understands. And this is the true reason why scrooge being a dick didn’t bother me so much. Because it helps create a great contrast between him and Merlock. Both thought of Gene as a tool rather than a person.. but Scrooge grew to realize he was wrong and what he was dealing with wasn’t some magical goodies creator.. but a child forced to constantly grant wishes, in sheer agony to do so no less, likely so sick of it because again and again and again people used him as a slave to get what they wanted and to hell with what Gene wanted. He realized he was terrible for making this poor boy into his slave simply because that’s his job. In contrast Merlock could give no shits and is a malevolent monster who glefully uses Gene despite the pain the wishes put him through and his protests. It’s why Gene is the best part.. he’s  athroughly likeable, throughly inncoent character with tons of personality and a truly tragic and horrifying backstory and Rip Taylor acts the hell out of every scene with the guy.
Thankfully the marbles come in handy one last time and Huey, Dewey or Louie snipes the lamp away and a struggle for it insues between Scrooge and Merloc mid air. it’s fucking awesome.. and it get sbetter in how scroogewins. He simply gets rid of Merlock’s amulet, taking it then throwing it. Grante dhe COULD’EVE used it for unimited wishes.. but it was too risky to do that and as we’ll see in the ending , Scrooge realized the Lamp was too powerful to keep around for much longer and too much of a tempting target for his rogues.. not that we see them this movie as the crew wanted it to bea ccesaible and thus kept hte cast to the main cast from season 1 and just made new vilians and a new supporting character, but still.
He does use his second wish though to undue the damage Merlock had done and the bin and clan mcduck are returned to duckburg in good condition.
Time for our ending, which is genuinely and wholly touching. With the lamp too dangerous to use Scrooge considers just sending it to the earth’s core, which horrifies the kids as it’d mean Gene would be trapped there forever... if the molten lava iddn’t just outright destory the lamp and probably kill him. But Scrooge.. isn’t the bastard he likes to potray himself as. Instead he makes Gene into a real boy. He gives the poor kid HIS wish, which designrates the lamp and undoes all the spells... so Merlock is PROBABLY dead but he does return for some games so maybe not?
And so we end on two things: Gene happily playing cops and robbers with the boys finally free.. and Birth of A Nation grabbing all the loot he can in his patns and running off. Ha ha ha thank god i’m done with this prick. And no I will not be looking at his ducktales episodes unless I have to.
Final Thoughts:
This movie is OKAY. It has a solid plot, gene is a wonderful chacter, the animatoin is pretty prettay pretty good, and the voice acting as usual is excellent, with Rip Taylor being the standout.
But as my paragraphs of rage shoud’ve made Clear Djonn is just BAD. Easily the worst character i’ve encountered in my year of reviewing and some of the worst writing i’ve ran into. And that writing includes a goblin man voyerstically forcing two teenagers to make out, making jokes about santa renaming himself Clem the sceneafter he tearfully confessed to letting the elves and ms. claus die, accidental transphobia via the u-men, and Bryan Lee O malley thinking we needed more than one volume of Julie Powers being around.  This was disgusting, even by 1990 standards and especially by 2021 standards and it drags the film down considerably. Without it the film is okay.. with it the film is just VERY hard to watch any time he pops up.  He made getting through the movie a nightmare and while I pause a lot becaue it’s a bad habbit I did so more simply because as I said earlier in the review I could not stand him.
It makes it a hard film to recommend. If you can stomach the racisim, then it might be worth it, but be aware of what your putting up with going in. But if you can’t.. there’s no shame in that, it’s carbombya levels of bad. Which yes was a real fictoinal country. It was so bad Casey Casem quit transformers over it. True story. So yeah, it’s an okay film, on par with the series at it’s best for the most part.. but Djonn just spoils it for me.
If you liked this review, like it, share it around that sort of thing and if you want MORE disney movie reviews, in addiiton to the goofy movie one later this month, if you help me hit my 25 dollar stretch goal on patroen.com/popculturebuffet, i’ll do reviews of the Recess, Proud Family and Kim Possible MOvies (Well so the drama anyway), so help me out would you and i’ll see you at the next rainbow.

Should… | Tom Hiddleston x OFC (Emma Masters) | Chapter 3 | ... I Let This Happen?
Tumblr media
Pairing: Tom Hiddleston x Emma Masters
Summary: Five years ago, Emma Masters just landed her first big acting gig on a soap opera. While it is not much, it is an opportunity to grow. While out celebrating, she meets up with a fellow actor, Tom Hiddleston. While she doesn’t recognize any of his work, the two hit it off. Before they know, they are getting hot and heavy in the elevator up to Tom’s room. Like ships passing in the night, the two never manage to meet again. Now five years later, Emma is a heavy hitter in the prime time drama world and Tom is a Golden Globe winning movie star. Their paths cross again but things have changed. Will they do what they should or fall to their deepest desires?
This Chapter:  Emma gets to the restaurant and realizes her mistake. Should she let this happen or tell the Tom the truth? And what will be the consequences?
Warnings: smut, vaginal sex, fingering, drunk sex, oral sex, cheating, unhealthly relationships
-
Once the car pulled up to Casa Vega, Emma realized her mistake.
“Maybe we should just call it a night?” Emma offered. “I’m sure you’re exhausted from the auditions all day.”
Tom grinned back to her.
“Nonsense. We are here to celebrate. Besides,” Tom rubbed his hand on Emma’s thigh. “I am dying to catch up with you.” Emma feigned a smile. In her mind, the right thing to do was to go home, but her heart said to throw caution to the wind.
As Tom opened the door and held his hand out to her, Emma’s heart won out. What harm ever came from dinner?
The greeter sat the two of them in a small booth in the back, far from the prying eyes of the other patrons. Tom took the opportunity, sliding right next to Emma. His heat radiated through his jeans and straight onto Emma’s thigh. She felt her cheeks flush.
“Is it hot in here?” she asked, shaking her shirt to create a breeze.
“Feel fine to me. Perhaps you just need something to drink.”
As if on cue, the waiter appeared.
“Bulleit Whiskey, neat. Please.” Tom ordered.
“I… I will take a seltzer with lime.” Emma responded. What she really wanted was a margarita. Maybe two to get through the night.
Tom grimaced at Emma.
“That doesn’t sound like the girl I met five years ago. I half expected you to order one of those fishbowl margaritas.”
Emma chuckled at the thought of drinking half a bottle of tequila as she sipped her water.
“Tequila is off limits. Makes me bloat.”
“Says who?” Tom countered, his brows knitted above his nose. Emma changed from the girl he met in New York.
“My trainer.” she snapped back. “He keeps my nutrition pretty dialed in.”
Emma hated the diet Bryce kept her on. No gluten, no dairy, no refined sugar, no alcohol, and no fun. She realized the importance to keep in shape for roles but every so often she wanted to let loose and eat a cupcake.
“That sounds dreadful.” Tom scrunched his nose up at restricting a diet.
Emma shrugged.
“It’s not bad once you get used to it.” She lied. She never got used to it.
“I can’t imagine going through life without eating a cookie once in a while.”
Emma chuckled at the memory of Tom and Cookie Monster. “Me want cookie.” she giggled.
“Precisely. We all need to live a little.”
The waiter appeared with the drinks. Emma looked over to Tom who held his glass up. She turned to the waiter.
“On second thought, can I get a white wine sangria?”
The waiter nodded and took off to fetch the drink. Tom nudged Emma with his shoulder.
“That’s my girl. A toast…” Emma held up her first drink as Tom continued, “… to the beginning of a beautiful work relationship and rekindling an old friendship.” The two of them clinked glasses and Emma took a sip as did Tom.
“So…” Emma started, “what’s new with you?” Emma dropped her head. What a stupid question! “I didn’t mean… Obviously… you are doing the movie.” She huffed. “I’ll shut up now.”
Tom’s head fell back in laughter.
“Are you nervous, Em?” Tom rubbed her shoulders. “Why on earth are you nervous? It’s not like I haven’t already seen you naked.”
Emma gave a nervous chuckle. Why on earth was she nervous? It’s dinner with an old friend, nothing more. “You’re right. I don’t know what is wrong with me.” She took a big swig of her sangria and felt her nerves melt away.
“Right.” Tom said as he rubbed her knee. “Silver Sable, you must be proud.”
Emma smiled at the mention of her character. “I am. She is the best character I ever played.”
“I appreciate the feeling. If you ever need help with those daggers...” Tom flipped his silverware for effect.
Emma giggled. “You will be my first call, promise.”
With that, the two of them ordered food and continued talking. Tom’s hand worked its way from her knee to lower thigh. He gave a playful squeeze during the conversation every so often, each time sparking something inside Emma. Why is he so handsome?
Once the food arrived, both dug in with gusto. When the waiter cleared the plates, and Tom paid the bill, Emma lingered in the booth. She didn’t want the evening to end. Tom slid out of the booth and offered his hand to her, which she gladly took. When they stepped out, a blast of night chill hit them. Emma shivered. She did not pack a jacket, not expecting such a late evening.
“Cold?” Tom questioned.
“A touch.”
“Let’s see if we can’t warm you up.”
Tom rubbed Emma’s arm with vigor. She felt warmth emanate from the palms of his hands. She gave a small smile as he looked up at him. Tom tilted his head and before Emma said a word, Tom pressed his lips to hers. Warmth flowed from her lips through her entire body and against her better judgment, she flung her arms over Tom’s neck and pulled him in deeper.
This is wrong! a small voice in her head screamed. But her need to be wanted and desired drowned out the voices of her better angels. Tom pulled away.
“Better?”
“Yeah.” Emma breathed. “Um… I need to get home.”
Tom looked at his watch. “Shit! Me too. Big day tomorrow. I’m not just the male lead, but also an executive producer.” Tom led her back to the car. During the ride back to the studio, the two of them didn’t make much conversation. Tom focused on the road and Emma went over the whole scene in her mind again and again. They arrived at the studio and Tom parked the car.
“I had a great time, Tom.”
Tom rubbed the back of his fingers on Emma’s arm. Those damn shivers again. “Me too. That kiss back there, sorry if I was being forward.”
“No, it’s fine.” Emma retorted back, opening the door. “You have a big day tomorrow as so do I. Thank you again.” Emma turned to leave but Tom grabbed her wrist. With a flick, he snapped her back around, and he kissed her again. “I’ll call you.”
Emma nodded. “I look forward to it.”
Emma walked to her car in shock. Why did she say that? The drive home was quick but not so quick Emma couldn’t replay the entire evening in her head over and over. She tried to determine where she went wrong or whether she wanted to change anything that happened.
By the time Emma got home, it was dark. There were no lights on when Emma entered the front door of her home. “Bryce?” she called into the void.
Silence.
She peeked into the bedroom and saw Bryce’s head peeking out from underneath the covers. She changed into pajamas and slid into bed without waking up Bryce, letting sleep take over.
-
The California sun streaming in through Emma’s windows was a rude wake up call. She stretched and found the other side of the bed cold. She sat up and headed into the bathroom before tugging on a robe. Upon entering the living area, the sound of a high-speed blender greeted Emma going. Just what she needed this particular morning.
“Morning, babe.”
Emma saw Bryce in the kitchen, wearing only his boxers, shoving spinach into the blender.
“Morning.” Emma mumbled as she turned on the coffee machine. Caffeine was a necessity at this point.
“Late night? You weren’t home by the time I fell asleep.” Bryce placed a wet kiss on Emma’s cheek as he chugged his shake.
“Yeah…” Emma started, choosing her words with care, “I went out with an old friend.”
She rationalized it was not a lie.
“Anyone I know?” Bryce pressed as he finished up the shake and began doing push-ups on the kitchen floor.
“I don’t think so.”
Still not a lie.
“Where did you go?”
“What’s with all the questions?” Emma protested.
Bryce looked up at her. “I’m just wondering. Do you not want to tell me because you cheated?”
Emma’s face reddened.
Bryce hopped up. “I knew it!”
“Bryce I can…” Emma started as tears pricked her eyes.
“Babe,” he interrupted, “You know how important your diet is. We can’t have you getting fat.”
He pinched her side at non-existent pudge. “I guessed you looked a little bloated. Let me guess, Mexican food with a margarita.”
Emma blinked back the tears. She nodded. “Sangria.”
Bryce slammed his palms against the island counter. “Well, it’s a good thing we have the home gym. An extra 30 minutes of cardio should do it.”
Emma continued to stare in disbelief. She smiled and nodded. “Of course, babe.”
Bryce gave her another sloppy kiss. “I got to meet Dustin and Nick at Gold’s. Are we still on for dinner at Craig’s?”
Emma gripped the counter. “You bet.”
Bryce grinned and slapped her ass as he headed off to the bedroom to get ready. Emma dropped her head and appreciated the cool marble against her forehead.
The rest of the day flew by. Emma received a call from her agent offering her the part in the new movie. She pretended to act surprised. They already set her up for meetings on the project the next day. Emma spent the day running errands, making phone calls, and yes, working out. She changed out of pajamas and slipped on a nice dress to meet Bryce, who texted and said to just meet at the restaurant.
-
At 6 p.m., she met Bryce at Craig’s. Bryce was waiting outside, having changed out of gym clothes and wearing a knit polo and slacks. The polo hugged Bryce’s biceps and abs. Emma told him the shirts were too tight but Bryce insisted the best advertising for his personal training business was his own body. Bryce spun Emma before kissing her cheek, making sure the photographers got a good shot. Emma would have preferred something more low-key but Bryce picked it for date night. She suspected Bryce picked the more high profile places for the publicity, the fact Bryce never wanted to take the back entrance heightened this suspicion. It was Emma’s least favorite part of the business, the paparazzi and the gossip magazines.
They sat down right away, at a table in the middle of everything at Bryce’s request. Emma felt eyes staring at the two of them. She wanted to melt into the floor. Bryce took her hand and rubbed her knuckles. She pulled her hand but Bryce held tight.
“What’s wrong babe?” Bryce rubbed her cheek with the back of his hand.
She hated that and moved away from the motion. “Nothing. I’m tired.”
“You’ll feel better once you eat.”
The waiter came by to get drink orders.
“A Scotch and water and water with lemon for the lady.”
Emma gave the waiter a strained nod. Emma looked around the room. The dim light made it hard to make out faces. But she heard a voice ring out and made her blood chill. At that moment, Emma swore to only order take-out.
“Em!”
Emma turned and saw Tom making a beeline to her table.
“Tom!”
Emma rose in a daze as Tom pulled her into a bear hug.
“We have to stop meeting like this.”
Emma managed a nervous laugh. This was her personal hell.
“I’m sorry. How rude of me. I’m Tom, Emma’s new co-star and you are…”
Bryce stood too. Tom towered a good six inches about him. Bryce puffed his chest out.
“Bryce…”
“… ah yes, the personal trainer.” Tom finished.
“And boyfriend.” Bryce added.
Tom’s face fell for an instant. Bryce didn’t catch it as he looked down at Emma, but Emma caught it as she stared at Tom. How was this happening? she panicked. Tom gave a chuckle.
“Of course, mate.” Tom clapped Bryce on the shoulder. “I won’t keep you.”
Bryce pulled out one of the chairs. “Nah, man. A friend of Emma’s is a friend of mine.”
“Now, Bryce, I’m sure Tom has people to get back to…” Emma waved off Tom.
“…I imagine they can manage without me for a bit.” Tom smirked as he took the seat.
Emma’s eyes narrowed at Tom who continued to smirk. Emma opened her mouth to shoo Tom away.
“Can I get your order?” the waiter walked up, bewildered by a third person.
“Oh, he is not staying,” Bryce gestured at Tom. “I’ll take the New York strip with the mac and cheese. And the lady will have Tuscan Kale salad, no cheese, no nuts, and the dressing on the side. Oh, and a side of sauteed spinach, no butter.”
Emma gave a strained smile to the waiter and nodded. Tom sat silent. Emma rose from her seat. Tom rose, while Bryce stayed seated, drinking his whiskey.
“Excuse me boys, but I need to freshen up.”
Tom’s eyes followed her out of sight. He received a shove as he sat back down.
“She is something, huh?”
“Yes, she is. So Bryce…”
“Call me Bry.”
Tom swallowed hard. “Okay, Bry. Emma told me you are a personal trainer.”
Bryce’s face lit up. He stood up. And lifted his shirt.
“Feel my abs.”
“I’d rather not.”
“No, dude, touch my abs.” Bryce pulled at Tom’s arm but he wrenched free of his grasp.
“I’m fine, thank you.”
= “Okay, bro. Listen, so what is this new project you and Em…” Bryce’s voice trailed off as a girl, no more than twenty walked by in a miniskirt so short the whole outfit should be an obscenity violation and her fake boobs cinched to her chin. Tom cleared his throat.
“Tom, bro, did you see that fine piece of ass walk by?”
He shook his head no, desperate to get away. Emma made her reappearance.
“Did I miss anything?”
“Just a little bro bonding.” Bryce interjected, punching Tom in the shoulder.
Tom laughed and rubbed his neck.
“I must be going. Emma, always a pleasure. Bryce, uh Bry, it has been an experience.”
Tom hugged Emma squeezing her tight before extending his hand to Bryce. Bryce took the chance to pull Tom into a bear hug. Tom took off for his table but not before Bryce slipped him a business card and suggested Tom check out his “Insta”. Tom turned around one more time before ducking out of view. He watched Emma laugh at something Bryce said. Inside his heart shattered.
-
Emma arrived at the studio early this time. It took her some time to find the right building for the meeting. She found the right room and stepped in. Tom gathered around the table with a few men in suits. Tom’s face darkened at the sight of her.
“Emma, a word.” Tom grabbed her by the crook of the elbow.
Tom led her out of the room, down the hallway and into another room. He said nothing the entire way, instead staring forward with laser intensity.
“What is it, Tom?” she rubbed her elbow once he released her.
“How long have you been with Bryce?”
Emma furrowed her brow.
“About a year and a half.”
“You shouldn’t be dating him. He is not the right guy for you.”
“I beg your pardon?”

Araña: Heart of the Spider fancast
Tumblr media
As part of the anniversary week - and to not clog the Anya tag with my other blog lol- I'm gonna give a try to fancast a potential Araña movie. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of fancasts, especially from teen characters, since by the time a potential movie is made, probably most of this actors will be too old. So here I'm mostly considering actors if a potential movie is released in the next 5 years. I'm also assuming that it wouldn't be set in the MCU, but instead in the (sigh) SUMC (Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters for those unaware). I couldn't find any actresses for the roles of Lynn and Rocky, but they would be part of the movie.
Anyway, let's start!
Anya Corazon - Jenna Ortega
Tumblr media
She's so perfect for the role is almost unreal. A 16yo up and coming actress of both Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, just like Anya, she has already starred in her own show, she definitely has the charisma to lead a franchise.
Gil Corazon - Lin-Manuel Miranda
Tumblr media
Perhaps the biggest name of this list, he has the charm to play Anya's lovable but stressed father.
Miguel Legar - Oscar Isaac
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, maybe this is the biggest name. I mostly considered actors of more indigenous origins, which makes Oscar perfect for this role.
Nina Smith - Nafessa Williams
Tumblr media
She already has superhero experience, she should have no problem playing Anya's partner/rival.
Ted Mankowski - Nico Greethman
Tumblr media
A Power Ranger? In my cast? Is more likely than you think! Already played a lovable goofball in Ninja Steel, he could incarnate another one in another superhero property.
Sofia Corazon - Iazua Larios
Tumblr media
A mexican actress better known in Spain and the rest of Europe. Just like Miguel, I considered here actresses who have a bigger indigenous heritage, and something that she's proud of. She actually had to go to Spain since she got tired of only getting maid roles in Mexico. This could be a great breakthrough role for her.
BONUS: June Covington - Jessica Chastain
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I had the keys to a Araña franchise, I would make June the big bad of the series. I choose Chastain for the role since I've always thought she would make a great villain. I was actually actually looking forward for her in Dark Phoenix, but she was given a character whose main trait is "death stare". Someone like June would really fit Chastain's range.

In October 1958, a teenage boy walked into a music shop in San Fernando. He bought a sleek Gibson ES-225 electric guitar.
Tourists sometimes look incredulously at shop owner Ed Intagliata when he reveals the Pacoima teenager’s name. But then he just shows them the receipt, signed by Ritchie Valens’ mother.
Founded in 1948 by Albert Cassell, the music shop is a San Fernando Valley institution. Originally housed in a shopping center on San Fernando Road, it relocated in the mid-’80s to the corner of Maclay Avenue and Lucas Street. Since being featured in the movie “Wayne’s World,” it has drawn tourists from every inch of the planet, becoming a local museum as much as a place of business.
Through a partnership with local schools, Intagliata helps parents who struggle to afford a musical instrument for their children. The Play-It-Forward program lets some of them pay only $1.
“It’s not a giveaway charity thing. The kids don’t know a dollar from a hundred dollars,” Intagliata said. “All they know is: My dad bought me a guitar. I’m going to learn it.”
The program, he said, would not be possible without the generosity of customers. He cited one former student who had paid for 10 lessons before having to move away. Instead of asking for a refund, she donated the lessons to students in the program.
“People wanna help. They really do,” said Intagliata. “I’m not looking to be the biggest, baddest music store around. We do a good business. I make a living for myself and my family, and we pay our bills. And I’m happy with that.”
Intagliata came to California from Connecticut as a child and grew up in affluent Palos Verdes. He was appointed to run the shop by his father, a now retired aerospace engineer. His father purchased Cassell’s Music in 1978, after seeing an ad for it in the Los Angeles Times. His hope, said Intagliata, was to provide his eight children with a place to work during their college years.
At the time, Intagliata was working in the customer service department at Sears, where clients habitually returned worn shoes and dried-up cans of paint. He had a degree in music from Cal State Fullerton.
His father, said Intagliata, “had to put up some heavy collateral to buy the store. I didn’t find that out till later, that he was putting his future on my shoulders.” Intagliata was 24 — the second oldest of the Intagliata children. His employees were his siblings, which could cause a little tension.
“One of my brothers thought he could do his homework on the counter here,” he said. “And I told him: ‘No, man, no. You do that at home.’”
Nowadays, Intagliata, 64, welcomes everyone who comes through his glass doors and greets the mailman with a fist bump. To better serve some of his Latino customers, he made it a point to learn Spanish — using the language to communicate in a suburban San Fernando Valley city where, in the 1940s, people of Mexican descent had to sit in the balconies of movie theaters.
Intagliata enjoys peppering visitors with trivia questions. “Did you know,” he asks, “that Ritchie Valens’ real name was Richard Valenzuela; that he was buried at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery ; that ‘La Bamba’ was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress?”
A scene in “Wayne’s World” filmed at the shop in the ‘90s helped put Cassell’s Music on the map. In the movie, the protagonist, played by Mike Myers, makes repeated visits to the shop just to gaze longingly at a white 1964 Fender Stratocaster electric guitar. Nearly three decades later, Intagliata still has wide-eyed tourists pop into his shop every summer. Sometimes they try to re-enact the scene in which Wayne finally takes the instrument in his arms. On Facebook, Intagliata has posted photos of smiling tourists from Florida, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Australia, Argentina and El Salvador.
In addition to a framed photo autographed by the actors in “Wayne’s World,” the walls of Cassell’s Music are covered with mementos showcasing Intagliata’s customers. Thank-you cards from recipients of the Play-It-Forward program adorn one area. On another, he keeps a framed article that recounts a visit from The Master’s Kids, a pre-kindergarten program at Grace Community Church in Sun Valley.
The visit, documented by Music & Sound Retailer, highlights Hannah Carmichael, who went on a field trip to Cassell’s Music when she was 4 years old. Years later, she returned to the shop as a chaperone with her daughter’s class. That day, she brought a photo with her, taken by her mother at the shop in 1993. In the article, Intagliata proudly notes: “Mrs. Carmichael told me that, out of all the field trips her preschool had taken, the visit to the music store was the only one she remembered.”
Julie Chung of Granada Hills has accompanied three of her five children on field trips to Cassell’s Music. Normally, she said, parents of 4-year-olds make for anxious chaperones. Their main goal is to ensure that the little ones do not touch — and break — anything.
But that fear dissipates at Cassell’s Music, she said. During the field trips, the children and their parents get the store to themselves, and Intagliata starts off by playing the same tune using woodwinds, strings, percussion and brass.
“So that the children can hear the difference,” said Chung. Following the presentation, he leads the handsy children to a table full of instruments. “Go on,” he says. “Give it a try.”
None of Chung’s children have taken up music classes. Still, she said, “I know many kids who’ve been inspired by Ed. And I’m talking about entire families, generations.”
Esteban Andrade, a freshman at Cal State Northridge who began taking violin classes at Cassell’s Music in kindergarten, is one of them. Back then, said Intagliata, “we just called him ‘Stevie.’ Now, he’s this accomplished musician, and he’s got all these mariachi groups trying to recruit him. Makes me real proud.”
Andrade is one of three brothers, all of whom have taken classes at Cassell’s Music. Their father, Francisco Andrade, described Intagliata and his store as “indispensable.”
“Whether it’s support with acquiring new instruments or teaching us how to make small repairs, there’s always this generosity,” he said. “Without Ed, we would’ve had to go out of our community to provide for our boys.”
Intaglatia has begun flirting with retirement. He’d like to travel, he said.
“I want to see your Vienna, your German towns and Italy, all the places where classical music flourished. I want to go to the Holy Land, all the biblical sites,” he said. “Maybe go to the South Pacific and get one of those bungalows over the ocean — God, that looks great.”
But he can’t pinpoint when that will all take place. “I just don’t know,” he said. “I’m having so much fun right now.”
Outside of Cassell’s Music, Intaglatia keeps busy with more music. He plays bass on his church’s worship team, directs “a small choir” and sings with the Santa Clarita Master Chorale. He also brushes up on the seven instruments he knows how to play, including the accordion — his “first love.”
“It’s a good conversation piece,” Intagliata said. “People always ask, ‘What’s your favorite instrument?’ And I tell them, ‘Well, you gotta guess.’”
He laughed. “They never guess.”
As cars whizzed past the intersection where he’s worked for decades, Intagliata pulled up two images on his computer.
“You gotta see this,” he said.
On the left side of the screen, he had a picture of Sophia, a local student and the first recipient of the Play-It-Forward program. With a shy smile, she holds her first guitar with both arms. On the right, Sophia, now in middle school, juggles two instruments: her first and a blue electric guitar.
“She outgrew the first one,” Intaglatia explained. “Wants to play electric now, which is great. And you know what she did? She says, ‘Here. Give my old guitar to someone who needs it.’” Intagliata said, his face beaming. “Can you believe that?”

DeMille award went to Jeff Bridges. The new Carol Burnett award started off with Carol herself. I was saddened that Bill Hader, Henry Winkler, Kieran Culkin, Keri Russell and Sacha Baron Cohen went home empty handed. The Fiji water girl got most of the press and gave much free advertising to her product.  Some of the stars did not like her getting in their shots to push a product without their knowledge, both a clever and sad state of affairs.

The application goes on to state that ‘a wife must submit to her husband’ and a pledge must be signed to that effect.
***** There is controversy over the bill to give people a day off for Election Day. Many people will still have to work, the country never completely shuts down. How many fucking times do I have to say it: VOTE BY MAIL!!!!!!!!!!!
***** So, Scary clown told us Mexico would pay for ‘the wall’. During the campaign he gave actual ideas for that like Mexico giving us a one time payout or else he would not allow Mexican immigrants to western union money back to Mexico. Another idea was that there would be a great ta on that Western union money. It does not seem like they tried any of that and just decided we would pay for the stupid ‘wall.’ How about the money he makes off Trump merch which his website and hotels still sell to pay for it?? How about the $35 million that Trump sold in real estate in 2018? The ‘Wall’ go fund me did not reach its $1billion goal so the $20 million they did collect is being offered for refunds. Some of those people still want that money to go for its purpose so Trump is creating a non- profit. Can’t we use that money to help the border patrol agents and get the backlog in immigration court moving?? That we are still talking about this ridiculous wall and that it had a go fund me page is enough to boggle the normal brain.** I think Kimmel said it best when he suggested that Trump just tell the red hats that the wall has been built.  They believe everything he says so why wouldn’t they believe that??  It would save the country a lot of headaches. ** What the Hell is with his new “wheels and walls” mantra??** Russia caused Brexit too? Putin is a menace.** Another sink hole appeared the White House. WTF?
***** The congressional budget office says the shut down cost the U.S. 11 billion
***** Trump is talking to Herman Cain about a job on the Federal Reserve Board.
***** The GOP is selling fake bricks that cost about 50 cents for $20 each to send to Senate Dems. Some have said that the Dems should sign them and sell them and give the money to government workers. ** Why are Russian jets fucking around on the North American coastline??
***** Roger Stone has been indicted on 5 counts of false statements, 1 count of obstruction and 1 count of witness tampering. The FBI officers who arrested him were part of the shut down and they still did their job!!  He publically and privately claimed to have communicated with Russia. Predictions are that many more indictments are coming down the pike that involve many familiar faces.** Roger Stone has a Nixon tattoo on his back. I feel sorry for his cell mate.-Bill Maher
***** Bill Maher got some flak for comments after Stan Lee died. He wasn’t slamming Lee, but wondered about comic book fans putting away childish things. I suppose that could include weed but point taken.
***** Jared Kushner along with 30 other White House staff was denied top secret clearance but Trump advisor Carl Kline overruled that decision and gave it to them anyway. This has never been done before, this is a job for intelligent agencies.
***** Empire star Jussie Smollett was attacked in Chicago in what cops are saying was a possible hate crime. The attackers were yelling that this was MAGA country, poured bleach on him and put a rope around his neck.  The actor was previously sent a letter full of homophobic and racist slurs which he FBI had been looking into.
***** Ellen page gave us some memorable, powerful words to chew on with her appearance on Stephen Colbert. I am sure she gave courage to many who suffer because of our hate filled administration.
***** Gwyneth Paltrow is being sued from a 2016 ski incident for 3 mil.
***** I gain more and more respect for Seth Meyers. I did not really understand the choice of him as host in the beginning. His notice of local stations, choice of guests and revolving drummers makes for a great show.
***** A Dutch company may have invented a small device that converts heat into cold and Forbes is saying, ‘it could save the planet.’
***** So looking forward to Ryan Murphy’s The Politician which will star Jessica Lange, Gwyneth Paltrow and January Jones.
***** I know that is has happened little by little and we go thru times in our history when things get worse and then things get better but… When did this country get so fucking corrupt?? I mean seriously.. Why is Brendan Dassey still in prison and why is there no real justice for Teresa Halbach? ** Why is Trump still in the White House?**Why are government workers being told to work for nothing?? Why is R Kelly still living it up?? Why are some states going backward in time when it comes to women’s health?? Why do many corporations care more about their own pockets than the children of their employees or the environment around them??** Why does our justice system so often punish big for small infractions and allow the powerful to do anything they want?? **Why is a wall a better idea than infrastructure or warm beds for the homeless or food for our children and why are so many children in cages??
***** How can it be that we are still in a world where people are not allowed to reach their full potential?? Why do so many selfish humans actually fight to live in a world where they actively hold others back? Shouldn’t we all be concerned about the greater good?  We should all be allowed to see a Doctor when we are ill. We should all be able to excel in education if we choose .We should all be able to get a job to fit our skills and work ethic.  Opportunities and the pursuit of happiness should be available to all. Why is this so fucking hard for so many to grasp in this world? Imagine!
***** Sundance premiered the new flick, Big time adolescence with Griffin Gluck and Pete Davidson. Pete has since made no bones about filming in Syracuse. He hated it.
***** Jeff Flake will join CBS news as a contributor.
***** Tom Brokaw is in a bit of trouble for saying Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.

The reason why Camila is the famous As is because she’s a white passing Latino that can make English music because English music is always more marketable but you can also make Spanish music when it tends to be trendy like since 2020 up until now lotta music has been absolutely blowing up and so many artists have been doing it who maybe haven’t done it before or haven’t done it in years like it’s been 20 years since Christina Aguilera‘s Spanish project came out and Selena Gomez came out with a Spanish project now snow tha product ( she’s a completely different story because she’s always been rapping the Mexican flag she’s always been doing the bilingual shit like you can go back into her music and she’s always been proud it’s just that she did her session with bizarrap and that kind of lead more Latin artist to find out about her so she doesn’t count because she’s always been doing it she just needed the right kind of exposure ) but that’s why white passing artists always get more attention than people of color like just a few weeks ago J Balvin won an award and it was like best Afro Latino actors some thing like that and everybody was getting upset because he excepted the award and it’s like you could’ve nominated and awarded the award to sech Who is Afro Potomanian invisibly black like you look them up and that is a black man he also makes really good music if you’re looking to get into a wholesome Latin artist but he will never get the same flowers that Bad Bunny will get or anyone else who is lighter than him and it’s sad because he is making bobs all the time but the industry just loves to be diverse without actually having diversity I’m gonna continue this in my next ask
I 100% agree with you on all of this, yo when I saw the J Balvin won that I was like huh? this just shows how quick people are to erase black peoples and their achievements, and paste a white person as the staple for stuff we have done it's so messed up?? And you are right, she's definitely not as proud of her latin heritage and only uses it when it benefits her!! ive seen that quite alot w/ her tbh

8/25/2016: Hillary was the first to call out Trump's racist history and dog whistling to racists.
This speech should be required viewing. Required reading. The woman who got 3 million more votes called it. She was 100% right. She had the crystal ball. If only a few more of us had listened.
This speech needs to be burned into our memories forever:
"After all, it’s hard to believe anyone – let alone a nominee for President of the United States – could really believe all the things he says.
But the hard truth is, there’s no other Donald Trump. This is it.
Maya Angelou once said: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Well, throughout his career and this campaign, Donald Trump has shown us exactly who he is. We should believe him."
~Hillary Rodham Clinton; 8/25/2016
She warned us.
"Everywhere I go, people tell me how concerned they are by the divisive rhetoric coming from my opponent in this election.
It’s like nothing we’ve heard before from a nominee for President of the United States.
From the start, Donald Trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia.
He’s taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over one of America’s two major political parties.
His disregard for the values that make our country great is profoundly dangerous.
...
It takes a lot of nerve to ask people he’s ignored and mistreated for decades, “What do you have to lose?” The answer is everything!
Trump’s lack of knowledge or experience or solutions would be bad enough.
But what he’s doing here is more sinister.
Trump is reinforcing harmful stereotypes and offering a dog whistle to his most hateful supporters.
It’s a disturbing preview of what kind of President he’d be.
This is what I want to make clear today:
A man with a long history of racial discrimination, who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far reaches of the internet, should never run our government or command our military.
If he doesn’t respect all Americans, how can he serve all Americans?
Now, I know some people still want to give Trump the benefit of the doubt.
They hope that he will eventually reinvent himself – that there’s a kinder, gentler, more responsible Donald Trump waiting in the wings somewhere.
After all, it’s hard to believe anyone – let alone a nominee for President of the United States – could really believe all the things he says.
But the hard truth is, there’s no other Donald Trump. This is it.
Maya Angelou once said: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”
Well, throughout his career and this campaign, Donald Trump has shown us exactly who he is. We should believe him.
When Trump was getting his start in business, he was sued by the Justice Department for refusing to rent apartments to black and Latino tenants.
Their applications would be marked with a “C” – “C” for “colored” – and then rejected.
Three years later, the Justice Department took Trump back to court because he hadn’t changed.
The pattern continued through the decades.
State regulators fined one of Trump’s casinos for repeatedly removing black dealers from the floor. No wonder the turn-over rate for his minority employees was way above average.
And let’s not forget Trump first gained political prominence leading the charge for the so-called “Birthers.”
He promoted the racist lie that President Obama isn’t really an American citizen – part of a sustained effort to delegitimize America’s first black President.
In 2015, Trump launched his own campaign for President with another racist lie. He described Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals.
And he accused the Mexican government of actively sending them across the border. None of that is true.
Oh, and by the way, Mexico’s not paying for his wall either.
If it ever gets built, you can be sure that American taxpayers will be stuck with the bill.
Since then, there’s been a steady stream of bigotry.
We all remember when Trump said a distinguished federal judge born in Indiana couldn’t be trusted to do his job because, quote, “He’s a Mexican.”
Think about that.
The man who today is the standard bearer of the Republican Party said a federal judge was incapable of doing his job solely because of his heritage.
Even the Republican Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, described that as “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”
To this day, he’s never apologized to Judge Curiel.
But for Trump, that’s just par for the course.
This is someone who retweets white supremacists online, like the user who goes by the name “white-genocide-TM.” Trump took this fringe bigot with a few dozen followers and spread his message to 11 million people.
His campaign famously posted an anti-Semitic image – a Star of David imposed over a sea of dollar bills – that first appeared on a white supremacist website.
The Trump campaign also selected a prominent white nationalist leader as a delegate in California. They only dropped him under pressure.
When asked in a nationally televised interview whether he would disavow the support of David Duke, a former leader of the Ku Klux Klan, Trump wouldn’t do it. Only later, again under mounting pressure, did he backtrack.
And when Trump was asked about anti-Semitic slurs and death threats coming from his supporters, he refused to condemn them.
Through it all, he has continued pushing discredited conspiracy theories with racist undertones.
Trump said thousands of American Muslims in New Jersey cheered the 9/11 attacks. They didn’t.
He suggested that Ted Cruz’s father was involved in the Kennedy assassination. Perhaps in Trump’s mind, because he was a Cuban immigrant, he must have had something to do with it. Of course there’s absolutely no evidence of that.
Just recently, Trump claimed President Obama founded ISIS. And then he repeated that nonsense over and over.
His latest paranoid fever dream is about my health. All I can say is, Donald, dream on.
This is what happens when you treat the National Enquirer like Gospel.
It’s what happens when you listen to the radio host Alex Jones, who claims that 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombings were inside jobs. He said the victims of the Sandy Hook massacre were child actors and no one was actually killed there.
Trump didn’t challenge those lies. He went on Jones’ show and said: “Your reputation is amazing. I will not let you down.”
This man wants to be President of the United States.
I’ve stood by President Obama’s side as he made the toughest decisions a Commander-in-Chief ever has to make.
In times of crisis, our country depends on steady leadership… clear thinking… and calm judgment… because one wrong move can mean the difference between life and death.
The last thing we need in the Situation Room is a loose cannon who can’t tell the difference between fact and fiction, and who buys so easily into racially-tinged rumors.
Someone detached from reality should never be in charge of making decisions that are as real as they come.
It’s another reason why Donald Trump is simply temperamentally unfit to be President of the United States.
Now, some people will say that his bluster and bigotry is just over-heated campaign rhetoric – an outrageous person saying outrageous things for attention.
But look at the policies Trump has proposed. They would put prejudice into practice.
And don’t be distracted by his latest attempts to muddy the waters.
He may have some new people putting new words in his mouth… but we know where he stands.
He would form a deportation force to round up millions of immigrants and kick them out of the country.
He’d abolish the bedrock constitutional principle that says if you’re born in the United States, you’re an American citizen. He says that children born in America to undocumented parents are, quote, “anchor babies” and should be deported.
Millions of them.
And he’d ban Muslims around the world – 1.5 billion men, women, and children –from entering our country just because of their religion.
Think about that for a minute. How would it actually work? People landing in U.S. airports would line up to get their passports stamped, just like they do now.
But in Trump’s America, when they step up to the counter, the immigration officer would ask every single person, “What is your religion?”
And then what?
What if someone says, “I’m a Christian,” but the agent doesn’t believe them.
Do they have to prove it? How would they do that?
Ever since the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, America has distinguished itself as a haven for people fleeing religious persecution.
Under Donald Trump, America would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border.
Come to think of it, there actually may be one place that does that. It’s the so-called Islamic State. The territory ISIS controls. It would be a cruel irony if America followed its lead.
Don’t worry, some will say, as President, Trump will be surrounded by smart advisors who will rein in his worst impulses.
So when a tweet gets under his skin and he wants to retaliate with a cruise missile, maybe cooler heads will be there to convince him not to.
Maybe.
But look at who he’s put in charge of his campaign.
Trump likes to say he only hires the “best people.” But he’s had to fire so many campaign managers it’s like an episode of the Apprentice.
The latest shake-up was designed to – quote – “Let Trump be Trump.” To do that, he hired Stephen Bannon, the head of a right-wing website called Breitbart.com, as campaign CEO.
To give you a flavor of his work, here are a few headlines they’ve published:
“Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive and Crazy.”
“Would You Rather Your Child Had Feminism or Cancer?”
“Gabby Giffords: The Gun Control Movement’s Human Shield”
“Hoist It High And Proud: The Confederate Flag Proclaims A Glorious Heritage.”
That one came shortly after the Charleston massacre, when Democrats and Republicans alike were doing everything they could to heal racial divides. Breitbart tried to enflame them further.
Just imagine – Donald Trump reading that and thinking: “this is what I need more of in my campaign.”
Bannon has nasty things to say about pretty much everyone.
This spring, he railed against Paul Ryan for, quote “rubbing his social-justice Catholicism in my nose every second.”
No wonder he’s gone to work for Trump – the only Presidential candidate ever to get into a public feud with the Pope.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, Breitbart embraces “ideas on the extremist fringe of the conservative right. Racist ideas.
Race-baiting ideas. Anti-Muslim and anti-Immigrant ideas –– all key tenets making up an emerging racist ideology known as the ‘Alt-Right.’”
Alt-Right is short for “Alternative Right.”
The Wall Street Journal describes it as a loosely organized movement, mostly online, that “rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity.”
The de facto merger between Breitbart and the Trump Campaign represents a landmark achievement for the “Alt-Right.” A fringe element has effectively taken over the Republican Party.
This is part of a broader story -- the rising tide of hardline, right-wing nationalism around the world.
Just yesterday, one of Britain’s most prominent right-wing leaders, Nigel Farage, who stoked anti-immigrant sentiments to win the referendum on leaving the European Union, campaigned with Donald Trump in Mississippi.
Farage has called for a ban on the children of legal immigrants from public schools and health services, has said women are quote “worth less” than men, and supports scrapping laws that prevent employers from discriminating based on race -- that’s who Trump wants by his side.
The godfather of this global brand of extreme nationalism is Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In fact, Farage has appeared regularly on Russian propaganda programs.
Now he’s standing on the same stage as the Republican nominee.
Trump himself heaps praise on Putin and embrace pro-Russian policies.
He talks casually of abandoning our NATO allies, recognizing Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and of giving the Kremlin a free hand in Eastern Europe more generally.
American presidents from Truman to Reagan have rejected the kind of approach Trump is taking on Russia.
We should, too.
All of this adds up to something we’ve never seen before.
Of course there’s always been a paranoid fringe in our politics, steeped in racial resentment. But it’s never had the nominee of a major party stoking it, encouraging it, and giving it a national megaphone. Until now.
On David Duke’s radio show the other day, the mood was jubilant.
“We appear to have taken over the Republican Party,” one white supremacist said.
Duke laughed. There’s still more work to do, he said.
No one should have any illusions about what’s really going on here. The names may have changed… Racists now call themselves “racialists.” White supremacists now call themselves “white nationalists.” The paranoid fringe now calls itself “alt-right.” But the hate burns just as bright.
And now Trump is trying to rebrand himself as well. Don’t be fooled.
There’s an old Mexican proverb that says “Tell me with whom you walk, and I will tell you who you are.”
We know who Trump is. A few words on a teleprompter won’t change that.
He says he wants to “make America great again,” but his real message remains “Make America hate again.”
This isn’t just about one election. It’s about who we are as a nation.
It’s about the kind of example we want to set for our children and grandchildren.
Next time you watch Donald Trump rant on television, think about all the kids listening across our country. They hear a lot more than we think.
Parents and teachers are already worried about what they’re calling the “Trump Effect.”
Bullying and harassment are on the rise in our schools, especially targeting students of color, Muslims, and immigrants.
At a recent high school basketball game in Indiana, white students held up Trump signs and taunted Latino players on the opposing team with chants of “Build the wall!” and “Speak English.”
After a similar incident in Iowa, one frustrated school principal said, “They see it in a presidential campaign and now it's OK for everyone to say this.”
We wouldn’t tolerate that kind of behavior in our own homes. How can we stand for it from a candidate for president?
This is a moment of reckoning for every Republican dismayed that the Party of Lincoln has become the Party of Trump. It’s a moment of reckoning for all of us who love our country and believe that America is better than this.
Twenty years ago, when Bob Dole accepted the Republican nomination, he pointed to the exits and told any racists in the Party to get out.
The week after 9/11, George W. Bush went to a mosque and declared for everyone to hear that Muslims “love America just as much as I do.”
In 2008, John McCain told his own supporters they were wrong about the man he was trying to defeat. Senator McCain made sure they knew – Barack Obama is an American citizen and “a decent person.”
We need that kind of leadership again.
Every day, more Americans are standing up and saying “enough is enough” – including a lot of Republicans. I’m honored to have their support.
And I promise you this: with your help, I will be a President for Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. For those who vote for me and those who don't.
For all Americans.
Because I believe we are stronger together.
It’s a vision for the future rooted in our values and reflected in a rising generation of young people who are the most open, diverse, and connected we’ve ever seen.
Just look at our fabulous Olympic team.
Like Ibtihaj Muhammad, an African-American Muslim from New Jersey who won the bronze medal in fencing with grace and skill. Would she even have a place in Donald Trump’s America?
When I was growing up, Simone Manuel wouldn’t have been allowed to swim in the same public pool as Katie Ledecky. Now they’re winning Olympic medals as teammates.
So let’s keep moving forward together.
Let’s stand up against prejudice and paranoia.
Let’s prove once again, that America is great because is America is good.
Thank you, and may God bless the United States."

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND Feb. 1, 2019 -  MISS BALA
It’s Super Bowl weekend, and you know what means, right? No, I don’t either, but normally, the Super Bowl has an effect on Sunday box office as people will go to Super Bowl parties or watch it with friends which makes it less of a necessity to go to the movies, so anything opening needs to make sure to do well on Friday and Saturday. Into that market comes a female-driven action thriller that might benefit from having a weekend to itself.
MISS BALA (Sony)
Tumblr media
Directed by Catherine Hardwick (Twilight, Thirteen, The Nativity, Red Riding Hood) Written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer Cast: Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Mackie, Ismael Cruz Cordova MPAA Rating: PG-13
The only wide release this weekend is this female-driven revenge thriller starring the beloved Gina Rodriguez from Jane the Virgin, which is based on a 2011 Mexican film that was Mexico’s Oscar submission that year. (It didn’t even get nominated.) The film was popular enough that the producers found a studio interested in a remake starring one of the more beloved LatinX actors from recent years.
Although Gina Rodriguez has never received an Emmy nomination, she’s received three Golden Globe nominations, all for Jane the Virgin, winning with her first nod in 2015.  She hasn’t quite made a name for herself in the movie realm, mostly voicing roles in animated films and having small roles in last year’s Annihilation and Deepwater Horizon. (I hate to say this, but I still sometimes get her mixed up with Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez, but they are indeed two different people.)
It also stars Anthony Mackie, who was last seen in Fox’s The Hate U Give, but who has really exploded as a star after being cast as The Falcon for Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier, appearing in a couple Marvel movies since then.
Miss Bala is following in the same general genre realm as 2018’s Proud Mary, starring Taraji P. Henson, which opened with just under $10 million on MLK Jr. weekend and grossed $20.9 million, or Jennifer Garner’s Peppermint, which grossed $35.5 million after opening with $13.4 million. Oddly, both those movies opened on weekend with much stronger competition – Liam Neeson’s The Commuter and The Nun – which is not something Miss Bala has to worry about.
Although I’m not sure Miss Bala  can make huge waves, it should do well among urban audiences and maybe more among women than the typical action thriller might, although this is usually a male-driven genre. Unfortunately, Sony is only opening it in roughly 2,000 theaters, probably focused on those urban markets, maybe hoping to get in some of the LatinX audience who make up a good percentage of moviegoers these days. Much of the recent marketing is focusing on the amount of LatinX people involved with making the movie, so they’re clearly hoping to get some of the business of Pantelion’s bigger releases.
Mind you, last weekend, The Kid Who Would Be King opened much MUCH lower than expected, and I expect this sort of ennui to affect Miss Bala as well. An opening in the $7 to 8 million range should probably be expected, which might allow Glass to remain #1 for a third weekend despite the Sunday competition from the Super Bowl.
Mini-Review:
It’s been so long since I saw the Mexican movie Miss Bala, all I really remember of it is that it’s about a beauty contest winner who gets caught up in the war on drugs between the DEA and Mexican gangsters, and with the relationship between Mexico and the U.S. so much in the news, it makes sense that a studio would want to remake it for American audiences.
In this case, it’s Gina Rodriguez’s Gloria, an L.A. make-up artist who travels down to Tijuana to support her friend Suzu, who has entered the Miss Baja competition – again, Gloria is there just to support her friend -- and yet, when they go out to a nightclub, Gloria witnesses the Estrella gang showing up to shoot up the place and kill the police chief. Suzu gets lost in the melee, and next thing Gloria knows, she’s taken by the gang, whose leader Lino (Ismael Cruz Cordova) takes a liking to her. Trying to escape, she ends up encountering the DEA who wants to use Gloria to keep the Estrella gang in their sights.
That’s probably all you need to know as Gloria is passed around and put to work by both Lino and his gang, the DEA and other factions, all who see her as a way to end the ongoing war.
There’s no question that Rodriguez is a talented actress, something she shows off repeatedly, as she acts scared, acts upset and basically acts her way out of any bad situation into which she’s put. In fact, she’s so much better than every other actor around her, that makes it obvious how bad the other actors are.
Similarly, Catherine Hardwicke has enough experience as a filmmaker to make this work, but she’s clearly working from a script that just doesn’t have enough meat to keep it going, so the film’s pace is all over the place. We get a big shoot-out one minute, then Gloria and Lino are out on a quiet but out-of-place date the next. Over an hour later, we’re BACK at the beauty competition, which you keep thinking has been taken out of the story equation, because it seems like such a non-entity at that point. Not that the beauty contest ever seemed like that big an aspect of the original, but at least it was used as the set-up for the lead character’s journey rather than a plot device shoehorned into her story.
There’s so much that could have been said about this piece in terms of the way women are used as objects for trading and trafficking, but that aspect of the movie gets lost in the interest of making it a cool gangster flick that doesn’t lose the LatinX women watching it… but probably will anyway.
Miss Bala has guns, explosions, a decent guideline to work from and Gina Rodriguez, so why is it still so frickin’ boring?
Rating: 6/10
With that in mind, this week’s Top 10 should look something like below, and it’s likely to be one of the worst weekends of the year with the Top 10 grossing less than $50 million….
UPDATE: A couple minor changes due to actual theater counts being a little different from my earlier estimates, although the most significance addition is Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old, which is re-opening into 735 theaters across the country this weekend. Interest and demand should still be good enough for it to get into the top 10 without around $3 million or so. We’ll have to see how the Super Bowl affects anything on Sunday, especially the L.A. Rams playing the New England Patriots, affecting two important movie markets.
1. Glass   (Universal) - $9.5 million -50%
2. The Upside (STX) – $8 million-33%
3. Miss Bala (Sony) - $7.5 million N/A
4. The Kid Who Would Be King  (20thCentury Fox) - $4.4 million -38%
5. Aquaman (Warner Bros.)  - $4.2 million -43%
6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse  (Sony) - $4.0 million -35% (up .2 million)
7. Green Book  (Universal) - $3.8 million -31% (up .3 million)
8. A Dog’s Way Home (Sony) – $3.2 million -37% (up .3 million
9. They Shall Not Grow Old (Warner Bros.) - $2.9 million N/A
10. Escape Room (Sony) - $2.3 million -45%
LIMITED RELEASES
Apparently, Peter Jackson’s THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD (Warner Bros.) will be opening for a limited release into about 500 theaters this weekend after three successful “one-day only” screenings of his 3D colorized WWI footage, grossing more than $8 million. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, I highly recommend it, and who knows? Maybe it will place somewhere in the top 15 for the weekend. You can read more about this fascinating doc in my earlier column.

Just a week after the debut of his Netflix film Polar, Mads Mikkelson returns in the very different survival thriller ARCTIC (Bleecker Street), written and directed by Joe Penna. In this one, he plays Overgard, the sole survivor of a plane crash in the arctic wasteland whose drive to survive is further motivated by a young woman he ends up dragging across the tundra in hopes of saving her. I generally love survival movies like this one and the likes of Touching the Void, 127 Hours and the Kate Winslet-Idris Elba survival movie The Mountain Between Us. This one is particularly special, because Mikkelson is such an amazing actor, and he’s really able to carry this story, often with almost zero dialogue. Penna also shows quite a bit of skill as a first-time director, filming in less-than-desirable conditions to really raise the stakes on what Overgard needs to overcome to survive. I recommend this tense survival film highly if you live in one of the select cities where it will be playing on Friday.
Although his upcoming horror remake Grudge has been shifted back to Jan. 2020, Nicholas (The Eyes of My Mother) Pesce’s second feature PIERCING (Universal Pictures Content Group), based on Ryû Murakami’s novel, stars Christopher Abbott as a man with a disturbing past who hires an equally disturbed escort, played by Mia Wasikowska, for an S&M session that turns into a grisly and deadly game. It’s an extremely disturbing but brilliantly stylish film that throws back to Dario Argento and De Palma – it even uses one of Goblin’s tracks from Argento’s Tenebre – but also pays homage to American Psycho and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. It will open in select theaters, On Demand and Digital HD this Friday
Opening Wednesday at New York’s Film Forum is Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s The Wild Pear Tree  (Cinema Guild), the new film from the Turkish director of Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, a family drama about a dysfunctional father-son relationship who are pitted against one another. Turkey’s official submission for the Oscars will open exclusively at New York’s Film Forum on Wednesday.
Rooney frontman Robert Schwartzman returns behind the camera with his second feature as a director,  The Unicorn (The Orchard), starring Lauren Lapkus (Orange is the New Black) and Nick Rutherford play an engaged couple visiting Palm Springs to celebrate her parents’ 25thwedding vow renewal, when they discover the magic of “threesomes” which they set out to discover for themselves. Having premiered at SXSW last year, it will open in select cities including New York’s Cinema Village, L.A.’s Laemmle Noho and more.
Fresh off its premiere at the 1stever Iranian Film Festival New York, Iranian filmmaker Mani Haghighi’s Pig (Khook) (IFC Center) has its U.S. theatrical premiere with its story of blacklisted director named Hasan, who hasn’t been allowed to make a film in years (something fairly common in Iran, apparently), so his favorite actress is moving on, his wife has fallen out of love with him and their daughter is moving out. Oh, and also (and I’m putting this in verbatim) “Hasan is upset that he is being inexplicably ignored by the serial killer who has been decapitating the country’s best filmmakers.”  Oh, Iran.. you so crazy! It opens at the IFC Center on Friday and in L.A. at the Lammle’s Music Hall and Town Center on Feb. 15.
From Bollywood comes Shelly Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (FIP), translated as “How I Felt When I Saw That Girl,” starring Sonam Kapoor (Sanju, Neerja) as Sweety, who has to deal with a family a little too excited about marrying her off, although she’s in love with a young writer, hoping her family will accept him. It will open in select cities in roughly 175 theaters, and I’m excited to say that I plan on seeing this Friday.
In that same vein, Rising Star Entertainment Ltd. Releases The Gandhi Murder, directed by Karim Traidia and Pankaj Sehgal, a conspiracy theory period film based on true events leading up to the assassination of Mahatma Ghandi. The film actually has a bunch of Western talent including Stephen Lang from the Avatar movies and Vinnie Jones, and it opens on Thursday, presumably focusing more on its VOD.
Asa Butterfield, Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones and Nina Dobrev star in Peter Hutching’s rom-com THEN CAME YOU (Shout! Studios) with Williams playing Skye, a teen suffering from a terminal illness who befriends 19-year-old hypochondriac Calvin (Butterfield) who helps her with her eccentric bucket list, and she helps him make a play for Nina Dobrev’s Izzy. So kind of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, only with Nina Dobrev instead of Earl. In theaters and On Demand Friday.
Opening in New York, L.A. as well as On Demand (this time for real!) is St. Bernard Syndicate (Uncork’d Entertainment), the new mockumentary from Klown director Mads Brügger – who also has a new documentary at Sundance this week! Its about two entrepreneurs who try to find their fortune in the Chinese pet industry by creating a breeding center for Saint Bernard dogs that goes off course.
An intriguing on VOD this week is John Potash’s Drugs as Weapons Against Us (Gravitas Ventures), about the CIA’s Project MK-Ultra and how it was used to manipulate musicians and activists to promote drugs for social control. I haven’t seen it but if Potash can offer proof, this will be one not to miss.
There are also a couple Fathom Events on Thursday, the Anime A Silent Voice and the Graham Staines biopic The Least of These, and you’d probably learn just as much about these by clicking on the respective links.

Having just premiered at Sundance, Dan Gilroy’s reunion with his Nightcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal for VELVET BUZZSAW premieres on Netflix Friday. Gilroys’ horror-thriller takes place in the contemporary art world of Los Angeles, exploring the idea that “artists invest their souls in their work and that, in an ideal world, that work should not be considered a mere commodity.” Sounds like pretty heady stuff, and though I won’t be able to see it until later today, Jake Gyllenhaal is in it, so I should enjoy it.  I’ll post some thoughts sometime Thursday. (Note: The movie also opens in New York at the Landmark at 57, and presumably in L.A., too, if you want to see it with an audience.)
Mini-Review: The snooty and pretentious LA. art world is probably rife for humor, and it’s also rife for a horror movie in which some of those snooty and pretentious people within are killed off in gory and fantastical fashion. While the third movie from Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) tries its best to mix the two sides of the horror-comedy genre, it constantly runs into trouble trying to keep them together.
Velvet Buzzsaw reunites Gilroy with his Nightcrawler star Jake Gyllenhaal as L.A. art critic Morf Vandewalt, who can make or break a budding artist’s career with one of his reviews. His girlfriend Josephina (Zawe Ashton) works at one of L.A.’s ritziest galleries but she isn’t faring well with her boss Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo, also from Nightcrawler). One night, Josephina finds a dead neighbor and learns that his apartment is teeming with his undiscovered artwork, dark and gloomy and perfect for selling to the L.A. art cognoscenti.  Everyone wants to get their hands on the priceless “Dease” artwork, but as Morf finds out more about the artist’s dark past, the people in his circles start dying.
If you’ve seen a lot of horror movies, you’ll probably already recognize the horror sub-genre of an item haunted by a dead man that proceeds to kill those who come into contact with it. This is basically where Gilroy’s latest film is coming from, though the premise of art that can literally kill is just a bit on-the-nose for a movie that’s set-up as a comedy about the art world.
The way Gilroy introduces the cast of characters is almost Altman-ess, as it pokes fun at all the different types vying for the priciest artwork by the mystery painter.  Gyllenhaal’s Morf is particularly funny as he transitions from confidence to full-on neuroses, but no one gets more laughs than Natalia Dyer as a young assistant who keeps being passed around from one employer to another, and her reaction to each of their deaths gets funnier each time.
There are a few clever and gory kills and a few less-than-clever kills, but it always feels like it’s never going far enough to appease horror fans, even with a seeming nod to the Phantasm franchise. (Incidentally, the title of the film comes from Rene Russo’s former punk band, incidentally, something which isn’t particularly significant to anything.)
I’m sure it would be a lot more fun watching Velvet Buzzsaw with an audience than it would sitting at home watching it on Netflix by yourself, but you’re either going to be fully on board with what Gilroy and his cast are doing or you won’t. There probably won’t be much in-between.
While there are certainly some merits to Dan Gilroy’s first (and hopefully last) foray into horror, the humor often plays better than the horror elements, and they rarely feel like they’re meshed-together particularly well.
Rating: 6/10
The Taiwanese drama Dear Ex from co-directors Chih-Yen Hsu and Mag Hsu stars Ying-Xuan Hsieh as a woman named Sanlian, whose  late husband has cut their son out of their will in favorite a man named Jay, played by Roy Chiu, which gets more interesting when her son moves in with Jay.

Telenovela catch all
Thought I’d do it in one post instead of doing multiple ones.
1. I checked out a random episode of La Traicion to see the video quality (which was fine) and the opening credit narration was: “My name is Hugo de Blablabla and my brother buried me alive to get what’s mine.” That. Is. Awesome. I assume the narrator unburied himself and is now pissed.
2. Speaking of La Traicion, both the hero and his evil twin are played by Mario Cimarro. I hope they put a bell on one or something otherwise how am I going to be able to tell who is who? Also, it’s a pity that well-bred 19th century heroine has likely never heard of threesomes because it would be a marvelous solution to the love triangle between her and the twins. Maybe I am just projecting 😈
3. I checked out the 1993 version of Corazon Salvaje - the subbed version has zero seeders so who knows if I will ever get my hands on it. The dubbed version has a truly awful dub and the video quality is not good. On my backburner it goes which is a pity since bastard dudes nicknamed “the devil” hooking up with countesses are my thing.
4. I checked out the 2009 remake of Corazon Salvaje - I only have the condensed version but it’s subbed, good quality, and frankly at 15 eps that’s all I want - I can’t take another eight million ep show. Looks nice but the hero looks old enough to send his proud child off to college, not fall in love for the first time.
5. So, I am sloooooowly making my way through Pasion de Gavilanes. Yes, still. The show did not need to be almost 200 eps. They could cut it down to 80 and miss nothing. If the leading pair wasn’t so pretty, I’d probably bail but they are gorgeous. Also a dead ringer for Grant Ward is apparently Columbian and plays the heroine’s evil husband.
6. Also about PdG - canonically, the youngest brother Franco is supposed to be the hottest - random ladies swoon at him and an old widow is willing to give him all her money to have him as her husband. I am totally boggled at that as that guy is a rare telenovela actor I find plain…well, ugly would be rude, so let’s say unappealing. His two brothers are hot but he not so much.
7. Juan Peron made a cameo appearance as a character on Padre Coraje, which is pretty damn weird.
8. Speaking of Padre Coraje, I can’t believe I made it to ep 80! I am beginning to experience a strong desire to hit both the heroine and hero with something heavy however. Heroine, I don’t care if you decide to reenact Thornbirds or decide mortal sin is not worth it - just pick something and stick to it, for God’s sake. All that waffling is making me dizzy. And hero - try to think with big head and not little one. Suppose she gives in to you - how do you think it’s gonna go from there? She thinks you are a priest! Are you going to fake being a priest forever and keep her as your secret mistress? Yeah, not a good option. Or will you one of those days go “psych! I am not a priest so all the misery you went through was not necessary.” That’s gonna go over well.
9. Is Fernando Colunga in everything? He’s the male lead of three out of four period Mexican novelas I plan to watch (Amor real, Pasion, and Alborada.)
10. I want to binge on Amor Real. It is soooo romance novel. But I cannot decide between it and Pasion (first ep of which I also already watched) and they both star the same dude so I can’t watch two at once. Pick for me!!!!

Hollywood is a weird small town. That's hardly a new observation, but new or not, it's true. And because Hollywood is a weird small town, that's how I came to know and befriend the man who directed one of Steve Bannon's alt-right documentaries. For twenty years I made my living as a TV writer-producer in "Hollywood" (which is less a place than a set of business and social connections) and it really was like living in a small, tight community. Everyone either knew everyone or knew someone who knew someone. There were cliques and in-and-out groups, the cool kids and the nerds, the crazy Old Man who lived in the big house on the hill, the rough neighborhood and the new money arrivistes, the rundown homes of the formerly great... And the schools. In "Hollywood," there are several "industry" schools favored by parents with the financial resources to keep their kids out of the Los Angeles Unified School District. (Before the tax-decimating years that followed the passage of Proposition 13 in 1978, California had a top-ranked educational system; today it's the 10th worst. That decline can be traced entirely to Republican tax-cutting fervor. But I digress.) For the Hollywood parents of a K-6 child there are a number of options, ranging from schools in LA's West Side for "artsy" kids, to more "academic" schools in the Hancock Park area and the Santa Monica mountains, to "nurturing" schools in the Valley, and "religious" schools in Bel Air and Beverlywood. My wife at the time and I decided to send our daughter Rachel to one of the "nurturing" schools-- a terrific family-run K-6 school in the mid-Valley that, until recently, had slipped under the "Hollywood" town radar. (That changed the year our daughter arrived when Peter Guber decided to enroll his child. Shortly afterwards his competive ex-partner Jon Peters enrolled his child. Then Kate Jackson arrived, and Al Pacino, and Ben Stiller, and within a few years our little family-run K-6 in the mid-Valley was buying property and expanding and had become one of the hottest places for actors and producers to send their kids and network at father-daughter dances and school wide fundraisers. But again, I digress.) Rachel has an outgoing and social personality. She's in college now, where she's well-liked and respected. All likeability and respect was also present during her years in K-6 , where she made friends with whom she's still in touch now, years later. Since I'm not the most eagerly social person myself, many of the people I befriended during that time were parents of Rachel's friends. One of those was a man I'll call Harry. Harry was (and is) a director of documentaries. That's a tough business to make a living in, unless you find a gig working in "reality TV", which, for anyone with an ounce of creative talent must be a soul-crushing experience. Harry had worked in TV for various light-entertainment shows but he wanted (and needed) to branch out into the world of independent documentary film. Like I said, a tough business, especially for a first-time director. Most independent documentaries are either self-financed or funded by foundation grants, because documentaries aren't profitable for investors. Pursuing such funding can be a full-time job in itself. But at the time we met Harry had lucked into a financing network that promised almost unlimited funding resources-- all because of an unlikely accident. Remember Michael Moore's post-9/11 anti-Bush documentary "Fahrenheit 911?" It's one of the few documentaries that actually crossed over into near-blockbuster territory. The success of "Fahrenheit 911" infuriated conservatives, including the handful of conservative filmmakers who occupied Hollywood's right-wing fringe. One of those conservative right-wing filmmakers decided to make his own pro-Bush 9/11 documentary in response. (Another digression: there is a vocal right-wing creative element in Hollywood, though it's much smaller and less vocal than during the days of the Hollywood Blacklist. As a practical matter, Hollywood is culturally progressive, though upper management is often fiscally conservative-- particularly when it comes to paying talent. That's a different rant, though.) Despite his powerful desire to outmatch Michael Moore's liberal outrage with his own conservative outrage, however, the filmmaker/director who wanted to make a pro-Bush documentary wasn't an actual documentary director. After raising funds for his project from right-wing financiers, he discovered he couldn't make a documentary on his own. So he asked around--like I said, Hollywood is a weird small town--and Harry's name came up as someone with the skill set to assemble a documentary who might be willing to take on the project as a way to showcase his own talents. As far as I know, at the time he took the job, Harry wasn't a conservative, let alone a hardcore right-wing conservative. When we first met at a K-6 social event I felt we had a lot in common politically. We both expressed contempt for Bush's idiotic jingoism, we were both socially progressive, we liked the same kinds of movies, and we were both doting fathers. Our wives liked each other. Our families hung out. Barbeques, movie nights. Good times. First time directors often don't get to pick their projects: if an opportunity presents itself, you jump and try to make if work. If you don't grab the brass ring the first time around you might not get a second chance. When that right-wing filmmaker offered Harry a chance to get his name on a feature length documentary, Harry grabbed it. He told himself he wouldn't make a conservative propaganda film. Like most fair minded observers he saw Moore's film for what it was-- a scream of liberal outrage. (I like Moore's film, but let's be honest, it's as fair and balanced as an episode of Sean Hannity.) Harry convinced himself his documentary would be a counterweight to Moore's film. He wanted it to be fair but strong, passionate but not strident. He seemed to think his own desire for objectivity would influence the final product and make it less a piece of conservative propaganda than it might be otherwise. He was wrong, of course. As a first-time director working under supervision by a right-wing ideologue he didn't have any power to influence anything. The film that resulted, the film he was credited with directing, was the film the writer-producer wanted it to be, not the film Harry hoped it would be. Yet that creative defeat was a career-making triumph. Harry was now on the radar of right-wing financiers who wanted to make more "documentaries" like the one skewering Michael Moore which Harry had just "directed." People like David Bosse, President and Chairman of Citizens United (yes, that "Citizens United") and future Deputy Campaign Manager of Trump's Presidential campaign; and the Dark Lord of Breitbart himself, Steve Bannon. Over the next few years, as our daughters moved through K-6 together, Harry and I had several interesting conversations about his work. I hadn't seen his first film, but I understood from what he said that he wasn't happy with how it turned out; he seemed to feel he'd been thwarted in his effort to put together an honest criticism of liberal attacks on Bush. Like I said, Harry and I shared similar progressive beliefs, though he tended to be slightly more moderate. But as time went on I noticed a subtle change in how Harry spoke about his projects. While making his second film, Harry described it as a serious appraisal of international politics. He said he was discovering things he never knew that surprised him and that he felt were important for Americans to understand. Of course, he said, he knew his backers had an agenda, but he was steering the film down a middle course. While the movie didn't entirely express his viewpoint he felt it was less biased and more balanced than his first film. He seemed happier with the outcome. I felt pleased for him -- though I was also skeptical, considering how the film was financed as well as the obvious political agenda of the subject matter. Since the film was only available to conservative audiences at conservative conventions and gatherings, I never saw it myself so I can't judge whether Harry was correct in his assessment. I did see his third film, however, the one financed and produced by Steve Bannon... and that was an eye-opener. Harry was proud of this film, so proud he invited my then-wife and I to the "premiere," a special screening at a theater in Burbank. In conversations leading up to the showing he talked about how he'd worked to create a legitimate documentary about a crisis in American politics, a failure of government to address a growing and horrific problem that threatened the nature of American society-- the criminally weak Washington response to the threat of illegal immigration. My wife and I went to the premiere, expecting to see a documentary on the problem of undocumented immigration told from a moderately conservative viewpoint--a reasonable expectation given how Harry described the film in contrast to how he'd talked about his previous films. Remember that scene in "The Producers" when the curtain goes up and the unsuspecting theater audience experiences the opening number, "Springtime For Hitler?" Yep, it was like that. The documentary Harry had described as a serious examination of the problem of undocumented immigration was a ninety-five minute diatribe against Mexicans and Mexican immigrants, told almost entirely from the viewpoint of hardcore right-wing Arizona border patrol guards and civilian vigilante Minutemen, interspersed with interviews of wives whose husbands had been killed by illegal Mexican immigrants and subtitled interviews with "illegals" who were drug mules or who had been left to die in the desert by "coyote" smugglers. The only "pro" immigration interview was with a radical Mexican nationalist who argued that America's possession of Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico was an illegal occupation and it was Americans who should be kicked out. We were, to put it mildly, flabbergasted. After the showing we made polite noises about the documentary being "very effective" and fled quickly while the rest of the invited audience heaped praise on Harry and the producers. After that, though we stayed friendly with Harry and his family because our daughter and their daughter were friends, I made a point of discussing work and politics as little as possible with Harry. Even so, I found myself wondering if Harry was conscious of the dramatic change in his self-perception. This was the same man who recognized his first documentary was manipulated by his writer-producer into a blatant right-wing propaganda, who'd known he made compromises in his second film to accommodate the financier's point of view, and who, nevertheless, had tried -- and failed -- to produce a balanced piece of work. He'd been aware of the compromises he made. I liked to think he was unhappy but resigned to the financial reality of an independent documentarian's life. He was also constrained by the fact that after his first film--so much right-wing propaganda--he found financing from less conservative sources closed to him. His only recourse was to make films backed by conservatives. That was the reality. What surprised me, though it shouldn't have, was the extent to which he rewrote his reality to fit the films he made into his self-concept of being a fair and moderate voice of reason. The reason Harry's self delusion about his work shouldn't have surprised me is simple: I've been there. I've done it myself and seen many others do it. In Hollywood, it's a way of life. It's how people who should and often do know better convince themselves the project they're working on is brilliant and insightful, when, in truth, the show or movie they're devising is often a piece of crap. William Goldman, master screenwriter, once said, "No one ever sets out to make a bad movie." There's a corollary to that observation: Very often, no one knows they're making a bad movie. When you devote ten hours a day, six or seven days a week to a job--making a film or a TV show-- for the sake of your own sanity you must believe the effort and sacrifice is worthwhile. Not just financially worthwhile--in Hollywood, that's an easy call--but creatively worthwhile. Go talk to the writer or producer of the worst dreck on TV and often you'll come away astonished by their belief in the worth of their own shitty show. "We're doing something special here," says the writer of every predictable family comedy. "We have a great cast and we're telling important stories," says the producer of yet another teen drama. These people aren't lying to you; they're lying to themselves. They have to lie to themselves-- otherwise they'd be forced to admit they're wasting valuable and irreplaceable hours and days and months making mindless and forgettable entertainment at the cost of marriages, families, health, and sanity. Lying to ourselves under stress is a human defense mechanism. I've done it, everyone in Hollywood does it who isn't a sociopath, and it's one reason I was happy to leave the business behind more than a decade ago. So, I understand Harry's self-delusion. He's in a tough spot. To make a living doing what he wants to do, he has to convince himself he wants to do what he's doing. To see himself as a serious documentarian he needs to believe he's making serious documentaries. To see himself as a progressive moderate he has to ignore the reality he's promoting a fringe right-wing agenda. It's tragic, really. Unfortunately it's the current reality of the small weird town that is Hollywood, and the much larger, much weirder nation that is Trump and Bannon's America.

Somebody Else - Tom Holland Imagine
So sorry for the long wait gang. I became a bit obsessed with a Mexican boyband and I spent waaaaay too long looking for good shit in Spanish -- and that shit was tough as fuck, my god.
Anyways, this is inspired by “Somebody Else” by The 1975. This is shit, I’m sorry. I’m tired. This week sucked.
Leave feedback, comments, ask questions, make requests. Thankssss.x
Tumblr media
“Hey Haz, Tom is in the kitchen.” You sighed and moved out of the doorway to head over to your desk by the window. He hugged you and then went over to look for Tom.
You loved Haz but you were stressed about this new script. You had to read it over a few more times before you decided whether or not you wanted to take this on. Although the project was starting off small, you were worried about the fact that you would be filming on location for a year and a half.
Considering you and Tom had been going really strong for the last few months, you didn’t want to ruin your relationship by moving into the midwest while he continued to travel.
You heard Tom’s sock-clad feet walk into the room. “You doing alright here missy?”
“Yeah,” you sighed, “It’s going alright...”
“Doesn’t sound like you’ve come to a decision yet.” He played with your hair a bit and continued to pet it.
“I’m just worried about us.”
“Us?” He seemed to not understand what your relationship had to do with the movie.
“Well,” you turned around to face him, “I’m going to be in the midwest for a year and a half -- does that not worry you?”
He used his thumb to rub at the frown forming between your eyebrows, “Darling -- we’ll be completely okay. Don’t worry your pretty little head about us. We’re going to be great, sunshine.”
You tried to smile and pulled him close. You wrapped your arms around his waist. “So I should take this role then?”
“Definitely, it’ll be so good.” He used his arms to express his excitement. “This is going to change everything for you, just you wait!”
It’s 6 months in and that’s when you know you’ve fucked up.
The flirting between you and your co-star at the beginning of filiming had been that -- just flirting. Nothing was being done wrong -- you played lovers in the film, so it only felt right for the both of you to have some sort of chemistry.
It’s month 2 when they decide to invite you for coffee and you say ‘no.’
It’s month 3 when they invite you for coffee again and you say ‘yes.’
By month 5, dinner is a thing between the two of you.
And you know it’s wrong because Tom is still in the photo.
But he neglected you.
And he hasn’t done anything to try to reach out to you or to try to communicate with you.
So you don’t feel bad because he made you fall for someone else.
When the photos surfaced of Tom hanging with a new cast member -- some pretty, young thing with blonde hair -- and you saw them hugging that way you felt your heart shatter.
He found someone younger and perfect and he found someone who could be there for everything. So when you saw those photos, you invited your co-star over and decided Tom wasn’t worth your tears.
But things continued to get worse -- especially when more videos and photos began to resurface. Videos of Tom standing around -- scrolling through his phone, no less -- on a sidewalk. Videos where she walks up to him and brightens everything. She makes his face light up a million times. She’s the reason for the laugh lines near his eyes.
And when photos surface of his neck covered in hickeys and he answered your last text with “k.” you figured it was time you forgot about him, too.
So you start dating your co-star. And you “accidentally” get papped at a gelato shop in the middle of fucking nowhere Ohio and you play the game.
And when those photos get released and when he calls you 14 times in a row, you start to realize you fucked up bad.
“WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?”
“Well hello, sir Holland. How are you doing today?”
“Why the fuck are you hanging out with that piece of shit?”
“Hey,” you felt defensive and angry. “Don’t say shit like that about people, asshole. You’re the one who fucking started it.”
“Started what?!”
“Starting sleeping with your perfect little girlfriend and ignoring me!”
“When did I ever do that?!”
“Explain the hickeys, then.”
“I’m filming a movie -- a movie wHERE PEOPLE WEAR ALL KINDS OF MAKE-UP.”
“That doesn’t mean she didn’t put those there!”
“Y/N, darling,” he was using his angry voice. “She’s gay, you fucking idiot.”
“What?”
“She has a fiance -- why would I go and mess that up?” He sounded much calmer and he also sounded defeated.
“I didn’t know that...”
“Yeah, I know you didn’t.” He huffed, “I can’t believe you fell for their stupid bullshit.”
“Oh god.” You thumped your head with your hand, “I’m such a fucking idiot...”
“Well, at least we can clean up this mess now...”
“Fuck, fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck,” you began to chant, remembering who badly you fucked up.
“Tom, I--- I slept with my co-star.”
The line was silent, but you knew he hadn’t hung up yet. You couldn’t even hear him breathing.
“What?” He whispered this, brokenly.
“I’m sorry!” You began to tear up, “I didn’t mean for this to happen.”
“HOW COULD YOU?!” Tom was furious but he sounded so heartbroken. His voice sounded raw and bloody.
“Tom-- Tom, listen to me darling.” You continued to cry, “We can fix this. We can fix this.” You heard something break against the wall on the other end of the line. “We can fix this Tom, we can.”
You walked into the auditorium and you gripped his arm tight -- it's been some time since you'd been to an event like this and you felt a bit nervous about the entire ordeal. He looked at you and smiled warmly, patting your cheek softly.
"Do you want to get something to drink before we head over to our table?"
"We can't go sit and have one of the waiters bring us some drinks over?" You smiled sheepishly.
"Of course we can," he continued to smile at you and he began to lead you over to the table you had both been set to sit at.
As you passed through each of the tables, you both greeted and smiled at the people you knew -- although you only starred in one film together, it always surprised you both that your friends and acquaintances always overlapped.
"It's so nice to be back in a room with everyone," he pulled your chair out for you. "Isn't it?"
You nodded as you sat down, "I love being back. Our hiatus was a year, but I really missed being around everyone."
"Well now that we've got our home completely set and now that we've got a dog," he turned to look at you and looked a bit apprehensive. You searched his eyes and he continued to speak, "Maybe we should try to get ourselves a child?"
You smiled and felt yourself fill with giggles and happiness. "Definitely." You pulled him in and kissed him -- you felt too happy to not take advantage of the wonderful man you married. He was sitting in front of you and he was everything you ever needed. He pulled away and used his thumb to touch your bottom lip, "Good." He smiled and laughed, too.
The lights in the auditorium went down and someone walked out to the microphone on the center of the stage. "The Oscars go live in 1 minute 30 seconds. We'd like to take this time to thank you all for being here for the 2021 Oscars. Enjoy your evening."
Everyone applauded, including the both of you. The room was filled with excitement and there was lots of buzz around the room -- the Oscars were prestigious and everyone wanted to be an Oscar winner. Including you and him -- you had both starred in one of the biggest films of the year and you were both proud of the work you had put in.
"You ready to kill it out here?" He pulled your chair closer and he offered you a sip of his coke.
"Definitely." You said this and took a drink of his soda, putting your game face on.
He laughed, "I love you. Good lucking darling."
"I love you, too."
The entire room burst into applause as the voice-over did the basic intro for the show. You saw Seth Meyers walk out on stage and you smiled as everyone began to cheer him on.
"Good evening everybody -- we're very excited to kick off the night with the first award."
Mahershala Ali walked on and you continued to cheer along with everyone else. "It is my honor to present the award for Best Actor."
When the slideshow went up, you used the time to look over to your right. "You nervous?"
"I'm not going to win this," he said.
"Not with that attitude."
"There are too many good actors in the line-up -- not happening for me..."
You sighed -- although you had full faith in him, you knew that trying to convince him otherwise would be useless.
Mahershala held the envelope up to his eye line. "And the winner is..." He opened it and read the name before he leaned forward, "Tom Holland."
You sighed deeply and everyone began to applaud and stand-up. Tom definitely had one of the greatest years of his life.
You looked over at your husband and smiled. He laughed and pulled you in for a side-hug.
"I told you I wasn't going to win...”
You both turned to look over at the stage where Tom was standing in front of the mic.
"Thank you so much for this." He fiddled with the mic a bit, "This was unexpected -- but this movie was so powerful and important and I couldn't be more proud to be winning this for the amazing people behind this. Thank you. Goodnight."
He walked off briskly and everyone clapped once more.
"Who pissed in his kettle?"
"What does that mean?" You laughed hard and looked over your right shoulder.
"Who broke his heart?" He said with a sly grin.
"Oh! That's easy!" You sat down again and reached for the tumbler filled with scotch. "I did."

It's been a long time
Hi! I didn't post here a long time ago. Since last year in Oct I think. Shame on me. Well, I know that there's a lot I want to talk about. •EXO Comeback •Actor Jongin ♡ •Suho •Minseok in the army •EXO in Mexico First point: EXO Comeback! F*ck yeah! I'm waiting for this, I'm anxious, I'm dying. I know... Everybody is excited because of it, but GUYS IS EXO COMEBACK. I do want a new hairstyle or D.O. maybe blond. Well, I don't know. He's handsome anyway. There was a lot of album covers and "a part from the song" in all my social medias. But it was fake... "Throne audio" were Lotto and Monster mixed. Good job for the owners you make almost everybody believe it was the song, and even a website haha. Second Point: Actor Jongin. He is my ultimate bias, and he'll do play in everything. Male lead in Spring Has Come! He's improving his voice, dancing and acting. He have so much talent and I feel proud of him. Of course I'll be supporting him in everything ♡ (As much I can as an International Fan) •SUHO DESERVES MORE FROM US. Is not fair that we support Baek more than him, we have to support every member not just only our biases. We are one? e)(o is one? •I want to see EXO live before Minseok get in army, because after it will be OT8 ... I'm sad because of that. I don't want to be unrespectful to Korean government, and I'm not trying criticise their ways. (Just in case.) •EXO in Mexico! Awesome... I'm not going, lmao. But I'm happy for the Mexicans fans and other fans who are traveling to Mexico to watch them. And for me? I have hope. I know I'm going to see them one day, I'm really patient... That's what being and international fan teach me. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
