y/ndevils00 🚨🚨 NEW UNCLE HAT TRICK 🚨🚨
TYLER ‘TOFFEE TRUFFLE’ TOFFOLI GOT HIS FIRST DEVILS HAT TRICK!! just coming off his first goal as a devil, too! GO NEW UNCLE!! YOU SLAYED TONIGHT, QUEEN! first slide was my reaction to his empty net hatty goal!!
but before those three goals could happen, we had to kick off the scoring somehow! and what better way to do it than with a Holtzy goal!! congrats on your first of the season!!
and squished in there between those three goals, CAPTAIN SWISS GOT HIS FIRST GOAL OF THE SEASON! TWICE! one goal WAS taken away for goalie interference— but don’t worry your slutty lil mind, Neeks, because it still counts in my heart!
my not-so-sweet, bff4l-ttylxox, maraschino cherry got a penalty for roughing— i missed what he actually did because i was climbing into the penalty box (btw if you have pics of that, please delete them, i can’t have evidence of me breaking into jail), but i’ve decided in my head that he punched a guy to defend me. and if he didn’t… what a bitch
and of course, who would i be if i didn’t point out that MY BOYFRIEND IS THE FIRST PLAYER TO GET 14 POINTS IN THE OPENING 5 GAMES OF A SEASON SINCE MARIO LEMIEUX IN 1992! whew, try saying that 10 times fast! the love of my life had FOUR primary assists tonight (on all 3 of uncle Toff’s goals and on captain’s goal!)! MY MAN, THANK YOU TO MY MAN!
p.s. i swear i feed him
p.p.s. we have no enemies of tonight, because none of the habs really played great… so i would just like to point out that, though not pictured here, I SAW MY TEDDY BEAR, COLE CAUFIELD TONIGHT! he seemed happy to see me! until i showed him my french? idk why that upset him so much

The Rise of the Hughes Brothers with Jim Hughes - Nov 3, 2023
transcript below cut ↴
Jeff Marek: Not exactly a secret that, right now the Hughes family, all three of them dominating the National Hockey League. Whether it's Jack with 20 points, whether it's Quinn leading all defenders or whether it's Luke trailing Logan Cooley by a single point in rookie scoring, this is the Hugheses’ NHL. We're just skating in it. Father Jim Hughes is a hockey director of player development for CAA, he joins me now. Jim, how are you today? Thanks so much for hopping aboard.
Jim Hughes: Hi Jeff, how are you today?
Jeff Marek: I'm doing very well. Let me jump in with last night. I'm gonna ask you a few things historically about the kids and growing up and the family and how in the family full of defenders you ended up with, you know, one of the elite forwards in the game. But I want to rewind to yesterday. So, you know, watching Vancouver just take apart the San Jose Sharks, I mean, it's a blowout. It's a, it's a tilted ring, 10 to 2 is the final and I'm seeing Quinn, we all are and he's just piling on points here. And after two periods, I think we're all, you know, rushing to our media guide to try to figure out, OK, what's the most amount of points a defenseman's ever had in a single game. And it's Paul Coffey and Tom Bladen with eight. And I'm thinking to myself, Quinn's got a shot. Here, like Quinn's got a real shot here. And then third period rolls around and you know Carson Soucy’s on the power play and things are sort of Tocchet’s calming everything down. Was there a part of Jim Hughes that said, ‘I want to see if my kid can set a record here?’
Jim Hughes: No, and the reason why we we know we know David Quinn and Wiseman and and and and Gordon, they're they're all on the other bench and I think I think the Vancouver staff know that really well in terms of you know they could have been maybe even goalie interference on Demko at at the end but. Everybody wants that thing to just get going and get out of there and and you know, it was it wasn't an easy night for San Jose, so. I I think it was done, you know in the right way with the right manner and and and I think yeah, I mean I I think it was it was time to put some other people on the ice and give some other people opportunities.
Jeff Marek: Interesting, that is... Listen, you're very much a hockey guy and I understand where that comes from. On my perch here. I just love watching records get broken. And right now, you know, your sons are playing on a different level. And man, New Jersey is must watch television. Vancouver is must watch television and a lot of it is because of your boys. Like when you watch them right now, like what? You know take us behind a father's eyes here. What do you see when you watch all your three kids playing in the NHL right now?
Jim Hughes: Well, listen, it's a it's a, it's a very difficult league. It's a humbling league. It's a really hard league. It's a man's league and... You kind of just keep your feet in the ground and you just go one day at a time. Yeah, they're having success because, you know, the general managers, the coaches, they've done a good job building this team and putting good teams together and adding pieces so. So the journey, you know, Jack's been at this five years now and so they're building it and it's really starting to turn the corner and you know, I feel the same way about Vancouver and Quinn’s situation, but you you're bringing these additional pieces such as Hronek, who's doing a wonderful job with Quinn. A guy like Toffoli that's playing with Jack, who's just a hockey, you know, you know, he's a hockey, hockey, hockey guy, and that's probably why Jack loves him so much because they have so much in common. But Toffoli's got so many… intricacies and he does so many things well as a hockey player, he's a hockey junkie, so. You know they've added really nice pieces and you know, just sit back and you know Ellen and I, we just, we were in the living room last night, we actually had three TV's going. We watched the U17s from Prince Edward Island at 6 o'clock and then we watched Fantilli and Kent Johnson in Columbus, and then we turned on the Vancouver game, and I think we had the Ottawa game on the other TV. So it was like we, it was a busy night here, but we, we sit here and we watch and we're, we're enjoying you know how the kids are playing and. Yeah, they, they work hard in the summers. We have a fantastic group here of about 12 to 15 players. And they get after it three times a week. And we're big proponents of, you know, when you're 20, you got to, you got to make yourself better. When you're 21/22/23, you got to keep improving. You got to keep working on your skill sets and you gotta keep climbing the mountain. You got to keep getting better. So we have this group in the summer with Dylan Larkin and Werenski and Debrincat and Kyle Connor, Beniers, and Copp, and Sanderson. Luke, Jack, Quinn. I mean, so they get going and and really they challenge each other all summer and they just keep getting better. And now that's what you're kind of seeing in, I guess you're seeing in the... In the early part of the season.
Jeff Marek: With Jim Hughes, you know, one of the things, you know, Elliot and I, every year at the NHL Players Media tour. Uh, it's always fun catching up with Jack and one of the things that he always talks about, we always ask him too, you know, how? How were the family competitions in the offseason? How was, you know, the summer golf and summer tennis and whatever games the kids are playing against each other. And I can't help but think. And you can... Can shine the spotlight on this it seems. As if this is a family where all the kids have grown up, not just competing against other kids, other teams, but competing against one another like it, it seems as if you know competition has been at the forefront of their minds. You know, since they were, you know, able to play hockey, golf, tennis, whatever it is. Have they always been like this amongst each other? Like ultra competitive?
Jim Hughes: Always, and even when the kids were living in Mississauga. On a Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, when all the hockey was done, there would be six of them down in the basement. Maybe playing, you know, basement hockey and everybody, everything has a winner and a loser, unfortunately. So if they're out playing tennis or they're playing golf or they're playing pool. There's a judgment. There's a judgment going on. And so I don't, I don't think they're trying to outdo each other but it's... It's a competitive environment and no different than the Tkachuk family or you know, we can go on and on and on, but yeah, they get after it, there's no doubt, right? You know, if it's, if it's golf, they get after it and if it's, if it's tennis, they get after it, and so they probably bring out the best in each other.
Jeff Marek: You know it. It's so fascinating too. And listen, Henry Staal was, you know, was asked, you know, similar questions about his boys as well, you know, is there one sort of common thread that's running through all the kids here? I mean, you've got three kids in the NHL, like getting one to the NHL is remarkable enough. You've got three in the National Hockey League. Like, what's the, we always talk about, you know differences between people. I'm curious what the similarities are between these three kids, that allows them to be top of their field, top of their position in the NHL.
Jim Hughes: It's a very good question. Obviously people see the skating. And we used to drive the Zamboni guys crazy because we'd have six nets on the ice and people said, “We only have two goalies, why do you have all these nets?” But it was all it was, all skating mechanisms. It was all going around nets and and it's a tight turn with explosion and a burst and coming out of the turn faster than you go into it. But I would think that the biggest common threat between the three of them is their work ethic. And I always say that to the young kids and the kids we work with. Is that the work ethic propels and makes everything better. If you have a great work ethic, your skating will get better, your shot will get better, your passing will get better. Your physical training and the gyms will get, everything can get better. If you have a high workload. And so I would say, you know that would be the common thread because you've just got to keep getting better in all areas of your game, and if you got the work ethic ingrained in you then you know, there is a very good chance that you can become the best version of yourself.
Jeff Marek: You played, Ellen played. Jim, I'm curious. You know what that you know, you know, when you, when you snatched the pebble from the master's hand, then you can leave the temple of moment was. Like do you remember the moment where the kids got better than you and what was that like for Jim Hughes?
Jim Hughes: Um, well, we've never played in the league, so [laughs] it's really easy. It's really easy. We just we support, we're we're we're, we're resources and we're- we support and listen with any of these kids in the league that get there, there's a small village of people, it's coaches and strength coaches and NTDP coaches and youth. Approaches and there's a lot of people that are involved with the process as we call it resources and so. You know we try to make friendly suggestions like we there's ups and downs and there's roadblocks and there's highs and lows and. Sometimes we try to bring the temperature down like. You know they're competitive people and Jack will say something and I'll say, you know, Lindy wants what you want. You want what Lindy wants. You want the same thing. Like relax, it's gonna be OK like. You know, like, you know. And so it's their competitive environment, it's their competitiveness. But sometimes you know, not throwing gasoline on the fire is a good idea. And that would be my suggestion to a lot of parents out there that are listening and and we're all guilty of it. And I've been, I've been guilty of it too. But if you can learn how to really message with your child, your kids and bring the temperature down and have common sense conversations and talks. I think it's, I think it'll go further and it's more helpful.
Jeff Marek: You know it's so fascinating when you look at your three boys, there's I think an assumption that everybody makes, which is well, you know what their development has been a straight line. They've always been great. They've always been marvelous skaters. They've always dominated. They make it look easy. It must have come easy to them. I know you talk a lot to hockey parents. Can you share with us some of the setbacks? Because you mentioned like development, you know this, Jim better than a lot of people. Development is not a straight line, it's a bunny hop. It's you know. Two steps forward, two steps back, one forward, three back, four forward, one... You know what it's like, can you share how many setbacks the kids had along the way and how they work through?
Jim Hughes: There's constant setbacks and you can- you can sabotage yourself if you're not careful. Because the world of youth hockey, and youth sports in general is, it's not an easy climb and so you've got to be persistent and hard working. But. It's it's a, it's a. It's a challenge in so many ways of getting there and quite frankly. At an early age, I think we- a lot of people can attest that Jack was a little bit different than a lot of the other kids up in Toronto. But for Quinn and Luke, you know for Ellen and I, all we wanted was hopefully they had an opportunity to go play college hockey in the US. Which both of them wound up going to play at Michigan. But, we were realistic and you know, we weren't. We didn’t have these grand plans of National Hockey League or anything like that. All we're trying to do is just move the kids along and hey, hopefully maybe they're good enough to play in college someday and then, you know, one thing led to another. But we didn't get, we certainly didn't get too far ahead of ourselves and, you know, the NTDP didn't didn't hurt either because it's a place that they value practices and strength conditioning. So it's, it's a good place to really propel, propel yourself if you know, and you see a Norris doing it, a Brady Tkachuk doing it, you see... You know, there's countless guys that have come out of the program that have taken those resources and used them along the way.
Jeff Marek: Between Vancouver and New Jersey, how are your frequent flyer points doing these days?
Jim Hughes: They're manageable because, you know, we went up for the first game in Vancouver and then we were on the first flight the next morning and we caught the- we went right to the arena in Newark and we caught their home opener. And then we- we caught two more in New Jersey and then it happened that Vancouver was in Philly. So we caught five games on the trip and then we come home and now we're just bunkered down and we got our televisions and we're comfortable just watching games on the television, and doing it that way too. And so I think it's important to stay out of their way a little bit. We- we visit here and there and then we get out of the way and let them do their thing.
Jeff Marek: It's got to be the biggest thrill. It's got to be great. Jim, listen. Thanks so much for parking time. I know you're very busy. Not just, you know, watching the kids, but working at CAA. Hockey director of player development. Thanks so much for parking some time with me today. Much appreciated. Congratulations on the early success for the family and all the best in the future. Thanks. So much for doing this.
Jim Hughes: Thanks, Jeff. Talk to you soon. Take care. Bye.
bonus bit from later on in the podcast that was relevant to my interests
Jeff Marek: Listen, I just had a conversation with Jim Hughes, father to the stars. What used to be Henry Staal is now Jim Hughes, and Hughes has the three boys and you know their, Jack Hughes is leading all scorers with 20 points. Quinn Hughes leads all defensemen in points and Luke Hughes trails Logan Cooley by only a single point, like right now, this is domination by the Hughes family. Can you sort of, you know, isolate these three and share what you think about these three players that are top of their field amongst their peer group?
Brian Lawton: Yeah, it's really incredible. We've been talking about it for, it really started quite a while ago, particularly in the US, NHL Network, American kids, you're going to really jump on that. I remember the first time we met Jack at NHL Network. He did an interview at the finals. And Jack was so confident that the guys completely hated him. They were like, “Oh, my God, this kid is so confident, you can't be that confident.” And as time has gone on, they've grown to love him because he doesn't do it in an evil or rude way. It's just who he is. He's a very confident hockey player. He went through hell in a handbasket to get really where he is. I mean, it wasn't easy when he came into the league. But he never stopped believing, he remained with that confidence and obviously now, I mean it's ridiculous what he's doing. So I give him a ton of credit. He's a great kid, he's fun loving. He's a character. His abilities... Everybody always knew he could skate, the first time I really ever saw Jack do anything special was at the prospects game. He got even against the player and blew by him. And it was so unnatural. I was like, that's not natural. Those two guys are equal. He's the weaker player. The defenseman is much stronger, but they're dead even. And he just turned on the jets and I just went, “Oh my goodness, this guy just has a hidden gear that he can call upon any time.” And I believe that that is still what's happening at the NHL level now. He's earned respect. Where if you go back and you watch his overtime winner against the New York Islanders, Ryan Pulock backs off him. Gives him time and space. He walks to the middle, shoots it in the net, end of game and he never looked like he wasn’t concerned about anything, and that's that confidence. But he's earned a little bit of room and now you give him an inch and he's taking a mile. So that's his greatness, plays the game with his head up way faster than you think. Not super strong. Seems abnormal he's doing as great as he is because of that. But he's no longer small. Or frail. And we saw that early on for him. He's over the hump. He's going to be a great player. He's proving it every single night and everybody seeing.
Quinn on the other hand is just magically gifted, also with the player that plays his head up. Jim did a great job with his kids teaching them that. But his skating is so incredible, his IQ. There was a play last night he made for Van where he's out at the blue line. He backs his body outside the blue line, extends the space in the offensive zone for himself to create a little time and space. And ends up just absolutely geeking the forward out that was covering him, where he's looking for his jockstrap as Quinn blows by him to the outside, comes in and takes the slapshot, ends up in the back of the net. The magic in that is the feet and also the ability to play with the head up and then, I'll say it again, another very confident hockey player. You're the last man back with the checker at on you at the blue line. If you turn it over, it's a breakaway and it's on you. Absolutely no fear, I feel like he could make that play 9 out of 10 times, if not 10 out of 10, that's special. Luke, on the other hand, we haven't got a good read on, watched him a lot at Michigan. I watched a guy, quite frankly, struggle defensively, particularly turning to one side. He really had an issue with that in college where guys were blowing by him. He appears to have really cleaned that up. Now his feet are taking root. He's really the biggest of the three brothers. His potential is untapped. I don't know why we'd expect him to come in and dominate more than Jack did his first couple years. Quinn was a little bit of a freak. He stayed a little bit longer at college. He was able to come in and really be effective if truths been known, Quinn could have left college a year earlier. He just couldn't really get the type of assurance as he wanted to, to leave Michigan. So he stayed another year, grew his game, walked in and was really dominant. Luke, on the other hand, I think it's just a matter of time. I don't know who will be the best of these kids, but you're right, this is hockey's version of royalty right now for a family that's just dominating in the league.
Jeff Marek: You know it's interesting, Lawts, because I mentioned to Jim, I'm watching the Vancouver game yesterday and after two periods, I'm looking at this and saying well, hang on a second, if Quinn gets, you know, three more points here in the 3rd and we've seen him pile up before and he's playing against San Jose. With all due respect, he's getting into that, Paul Coffey, Tom Blade and you know. Either tying or setting a new record for points in a game by a defenseman. And I asked Jim if, you know, he thought that, you know, if he wanted to go see, you know, wanted to see his son, you know, set a record last night, would Quinn have liked that? And he said absolutely not. And it's because it was a blowout and it's respect to David Quinn and no one likes being on the end of these blowouts, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. I mean, this is a guy that, I mean, that's a very hockey answer. I get it. I personally when you're, I think you I think when you're close to a record, you owe it to the game to try to try to break it like, you owe it to hockey. You know what I mean, Brian, like you owe it to hockey to try to break that record. And the other example that I cited last year was a December game between Buffalo and Columbus, when you know all of a sudden bam bam, bam, bam bam, you know we're halfway through the game and Tage Thompson has six points and we're all wondering about Darryl Sittler in 1976. And then, you know, his ice time diminished and held back and stopped shooting et cetera, but I always have felt that when a player gets close to a game record, regardless of what the score is or how the other team may be offended, I think that you owe it to hockey to try to break it, to give it a really good shot because these records have stood for a long time and when you get close, you should really go for it. Do you have a thought on that one, whether Quinn Hughes should have said, or Rick Tocchet for that matter, should have said my guy’s close to a record that's stood for a number of years, I'm going to give him a chance to break it, or you say hold on a second here. It's a 10-nothing blowout. Let's pump the brakes a little bit.
Brian Lawton: Well, from the coaches perspective, you're trying to create accountability in the room and that rises one individual above the rest of the group. And that's not inherently normal or accepted in hockey. Now, from a player's perspective, I can tell you that they're aware of these things. They'd like to do these things, but they're never going to come out and say that. I don't think Wayne Gretzky, you know, is really openly gonna  say, “I went into game 39 knowing I needed five goals to get 50, so I did it. You know, I didn't really care if we won or lost.”
Jeff Marek: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brian Lawton: You know, so it. But make no mistake, having been a player, if there's something that you're aware of, of course you'd love to do it, but you're never going to hear that from players and quite frankly, hockey players. You know, I used to be a sports agent. We used to have all sports at Octagon, they still do. They had basketball players, football players, baseball players, a lot, I've got a lot of great athletes from other sports. But I'm biased, of course, but I didn't- I, one time. I won't say who it was I met, who was supposedly the nicest guy in another major sport. And went to a charity event that he had, was really excited to meet him and he would have been like the 700th nicest guy in the NHL. Like I was just blown away. He was not a super great, nice guy. So I've always had this thought. It's not true about all players. That was a bad sample size, but it's a very known player who's still playing to this day. He really had that line and don't try to guess because I don't want to get into that and embarrass him. But hockey players are just brought up differently. Things are, you know, now it's changing when I say, you know, people at NHL Network, or a few of the guys, I shouldn't say people, were not thrilled when meeting Jack. Jack's a great kid, youth. But what's different about him than other players at that age that maybe had that kind of success is they will tell you more what they think. Whereas in my era you were really, that wasn't happening. It was not happening, Jeff. And personally, I think it's a good thing. Jack Hughes is a great kid. The fact that he's going to tell you what he thinks and that's maybe different than what was 30 years ago does not make it wrong. As a matter of fact, I think it's better for hockey. I really do. So you gotta let these kids express themselves.

yourusername BREAKING NEWS: QUINN HUGHES IS AT SEVEN GAMES WITHOUT A PENALTY!!
while this is not his highest streak without one (his highest is ten, and he’s reached eight games three times) it’s the highest we’ve seen since i started the best friend edition of penalty box! go quinner!! in 27:27 minutes of ice time, too!! look at you go!!
this was a very sad loss (petey and tito got goals!! we deserved to win for them!! and ig the rest of the team… maybe quinn… but for sure them!!!) BUT quinn did a very good defensive move tonight to stop matty beniers’s shot from going in the net! homie took that puck right out of the crease behind demmer #QuinnForVezina (joke). and bear threw hands!! and got a fighting major!!! take notes, quinn!
congrats on your lucky number seven, bestie <3 i am proud of you; but more importantly, i love you💙
BREAKING NEWS PART TWO: quinn had his tongue out!(a baby bit) so y/n’s boyfriend of him!

hi! as a new hockey watcher which of the leafs dmen are good (other than rielly) and what about them make them good/reliable? im understanding forwards a lot better since i started watching but i think i need the good characteristics of a good dmen broken down for me. thanks for your help :)
hi !!! i do hate to say it but like. as much as the leafs are a good team their defenders across the board aren't... great...? like morgan is great at getting points and lilly is generally pretty good too but if you want to know what a Good Dman looks like the leafs are not going to be your best bet on this.
it's also generally a lot harder to tell when defencemen are good than when forwards are good because, like, what is defence anyway? whuh? -- also dmen tend to have a lot more dimension than forwards (as in, there are more possible ways they can be good) since defencemen who play offensively are meaningfully much different than forwards who defend.
here are Some things, although not a be-all end-all:
lateral movement in the offensive zone -- "walking the blueline," as it's called. when cycling in the ozone, forwards will often pass back to the defencemen to try and have someone else create the space for them, or to pass to the other side of the ice for the other wing. good defencemen are better at a) taking these passes (not blowing the zone and making everyone tag), b) holding the puck at the zone -- moving side to side to open up the ice, and c) passing it up or back to the forwards. this is easiest to see on a power-play, but the tactics hold nonetheless
pinching/retrievals -- when an opposing forward skates into the offensive zone with the puck, they will sometimes come near the walls in an attempt to get around the d. better dmen are more likely to sort of "guide" them into the walls, where they can be hit to take the puck off them. similarly, when a forward dumps the puck into the offensive zone, it's a dman's job to go and get it. better dmen are more likely to make these retrievals successfully, even under pressure
interrupting slot passes -- across or into the slot is a really dangerous (as in risky to face) direction to pass through because of how much the goalie has to move to meet the shooter. good defencemen are great at knowing where a cross-slot pass is going to be and getting in the way, forcing the passer to either shoot themselves (less dangerous, because the goalie is likely already square to them) or reconsider (also less dangerous, because everyone else will have a worse angle than the target of the cross-slot pass)
jumping up in the play -- this one is mostly a task that offensive-style dmen do and it's not necessarily an indicator of quality, but if you're looking for forwards/trying to learn to watch the game it's also something to look out for ! when a team is in the offensive zone, dmen tend to stay back, aka mostly on or around the blueline (see point 1), but sometimes a dman will come further into the zone and much closer to the net -- morgan rielly is a great example of this, he does it all the time. they kind of transfer from strict defending to playing like a forward. this has both pros and cons -- pros, it acts as another forward in the o-zone, and cons it requires the other defenceman to cover more ice, so it really depends on the offensive skill of the dman.

Giggles i did it :)
god i want to figure skate so bad like its honestly one of my dreams
i also have some cool hockey sticks just chillin in my room :)
Hockey Player!Bartolomeo x Gn Figure Skater Reader
Tumblr media
all growing up you had always wanted to be a figure skater. but due to financial circumstances in your family you never got the chance to take any kind of classes. When you turned 17 you got your first job, you used the money from that to pay for classes on the weekend. it was exhausting juggling school, work and classes but you knew that one day it would all be worth it.
Now that youre 19 and in college you have even less time to practice. One of your friends had helped you sign up for your first competition and you were terrified. At least entering the competition and doing well enough will maybe grab the attention of the judges and people who came to look for potential upcoming skaters. on the day of the competition during winter break, you spent all day at the local rink warming up and practicing. there was only usually only a few people on the rink during the morning so it was the perfect time to practice.
your practice went smoothly. the only hiccup you had was when you ran into someone else on accident. He apologized and told you to look out next time. other than that everything was perfect.
During the competition you tried so hard to stay out of your thoughts and focus on your movements. Your family and friends came out to watch it in support. You ended up in second place but that impressed you even. you didnt think you would make it in the top 3. you went out to celebrate with your friends and planned out more competitions.
Within the year you had won several competitions and now had a spotlight on you. News crews from the town you were in came and interviewed you. Your name was widely known in your college and throughout the state. most people were shocked when you tell them that you knly started skating for 3 years.
Now at 20 you practiced a lot more for upcoming competitions. You would see a lot of other skaters and hockey players go in the rink to practice in the morning before the rink became busy. one of the hockey players you had become close friends with. His name was Bartolomeo. He looked like your guard dog most of the time because of how “big and scary” he looked. He was really kind to you though.
He would attend your competitions and you would attend his games. He was a really good player. He started out as a goalie but soon his team saw him for the great player he really was. Celebrating a good game or competition with him was fun. It really consisted of raiding a Waffle house and then going back to one of your places to watch a movie or play video games.
You both had set a name for yourselves in your town. since you both were so busy you really didnt get to hang out with him outside of the rink. Regardless it was great to practice with him. You would race each other across the rink (he would always win unless he was showing you mercy that day) and teach each other moves. He let you try on his skates once and not only were they too big but they were way different than the skates you were used to.
Everything was just amazing. Every Time you spent time with Barto you would always be in the best mood even when your day was terrible. Over time you had caught yourself catching feeling for him. you didnt want to ruin your friendship or have your feelings get in the way of your compositions so you pushed your feelings down. On the off seasons when you would have more time to hang out with him this task became harder for you.
Eventually you decided to ghost him to hopefully get rid of those feelings. you would text him less and cancel plans. you felt awful doing so but you didn’t want to risk anything. Bartolomeo noticed this and didn’t appreciate it.
One afternoon when you both weren’t working he showed up at your apartment without texting you first. He stood at your door with pizza and movies.
“What are you doing here?” you asked him standing at your front door in your pajamas, obviously not expecting anyone to be here
“Going to watch some damn movies with you since i know for a fact youre just gonna rot in here all day with nothing to do” He says marching inside proudly
You shrug at him and close the door behind the two of you
“you’ve been ignoring me” He says turning to you after he placed everything down on a table
“I have? I didnt even realize” You quickly say, feeling your heart start to race. you had hoped he wouldn’t of noticed
“yeah, since the summer started I havent seen ya at all”
“oh my bad, been busy i guess” you really didnt want this kind of attention so you tried to push past him to do something else
Barto put his hands on your shoulder making you flinch from the sudden action. He made you look at him
“You know if somethings bothering you, we can talk about it. I just miss seeing you all the time”
You don't look him in the eyes. Feeling your own eyes water you look down and slump your shoulders. Barto took one of his hands off your shoulder and moved to hold your face, making you look back up at him
“Hey, talk to me”
“Barto, please. I like you I just dont want to jeopardize your career because of me. And i dont want you to hate me either” You let tears freely fall down your face
Bartolomeo pulled you in a hug and held you until you stopped crying. After you did you looked back up at him
“You good?” after a nod he continued “I honestly thought you were avoiding me because you caught onto my own feelings for you. I left ya alone for a while but I just really miss you and I dont want to lose you as a friend in my life. We can take things slow if you want to”
After another nod from you you hugged him again tighter than before
“It just takes some time, but everything will be alright” He head butted your head and smiled at you

Oh, dear Ratboy. I really like it when he does long podcasts. It helps that he can communicate. Interview starts around the 1h.11sec mark. Dot points things of interest:
He has finished moving from Calgary completely, doesn't even have winter clothes anymore. LOLs.
When he first arrived in Florida he was happy to take a backseat, but the team wanted him to get involved in the leadership group.
He really loves living in Florida.
VGK was the best team they played. Boston & Vegas were very similar. Talks about how Boston slapped them during two of the regular season games, but they played really well against them for the other two games. And that's why he had the belief they could win. OMFG. He fucked up by jumping on the ice and got the penalty LOLs. It was all his fault.
He thinks players who come through in OT etc are the ones who want the puck on their stick. Good or bad they will need to be able to live it.
His dad always preached live in front of the net. Take some physical abuse in the games, earn it to score. Can't get your stick tied up. He learns a lot from Brady when it comes to spinning it off and getting it into the net. Watches every one of Brady's games.
When he switched to the Right Wing he watched a lot of vids of good right wing players.
Evolved as a player year to year. Same mindset as when he was a kid, "screw you I'm getting that puck." Paul gets on him when he gets into a bit of a shoving match on ice with guys he shouldn't. LOLS.
Offseason - earlier was PT, playing catch-up in strength, conditioning wise more cardio in the hopes to play more mins and faster. He feels he is better prepared this season. He is back to 100%.
Microphones on ice - good for the game. NHL gotta do a better job. It is evolving more via the players and teams. Players don't like it too much bcos they would feel like walking on eggshells. If it is used properly it can grow the game.
Wedding vids - makes athletes look crazier than they are.
Media/SocMed blowing things up. Keith talking about his team being "soft' - he was pissed bcos of how it got blown up. They had a chance to be in the playoffs and then they lost four games in a row. Ouch.
His current health - "Everything feels great." He didn't realise he broke his sternum, he thought maybe a collarbone, it wasn't how hard the hit was, it was the spot. He had to leave the game bcos he had to do concussion protocol. Game 3 didn't really hit him how bad he was. After the game he was not feeling great. Drove home that night with a sling, probably shouldn't have done that. The next morning he couldn't get out of bed. The day after he had to call Brady to help him get up, he couldn't even remember if he had a shower. LOLs. During one of the scrums he couldn't even really grab people's jerseys.
Getting into fights etc. Not that they want to get into a fight, it is more that they just hate losing. LOLs.
Sticking Jonathan Quick - doesn't know what happened, he has no excuses. He is not a fan of goalies that play out of their creases.
Buddies with Auston Matthews & other hockey players. It is the game. He would run almost everybody... except Brady for a lot of reasons, one of them being Brady would take him down. Lols.
Olympics & World's etc - a shame that they can't play together. It is sad. His first dream is to win a Stanley Cup, and then to win for the US with his brother.
Right now - being down in Florida outside; jetskis etc. Not going to buy a boat. Love hanging out with his family and friends. He used to not like the beach at all, but now he is there all the time. He is not into nice cars. Only into golf and stuff on the waters. No gators close to his house, they are close to the rink (wtf).
Him changing team - talked to Calgary that he wasn't gonna sign a long-term contract, worked together with the team, and with permission he had one week to talk to a handful of teams. Came down to Carolina, St Louis' and Florida. He just wanted to learn everything he could before he made the decision.
Going back to Florida in a few days.
Taryn is doing great, was injured last year/season and when she came back she was great.
Invited to 6 weddings, attended 4.
Jack Eichel - his hit. Haven't seen the video.
Fav goal in the playoffs - when Cousins scores. The Carolina one.
Barky is so chill, he thinks Barky is the best player he ever played with/seen. Loves watching Barky playing, during training he learns from him.
Scoring between his legs, his dad was pissed. LOLs. He used to do a lot of trick stuff, flipping his picks etc. He remembers watching Kane and Crosby doing it when he was growing up.
He will chat with his dad after games, and nowadays his dad trusts him.
He thinks Brady is great, a great scorer. Brady's goal is to get the team into the playoffs. Ottawa loves Brady, he is a god there. They treat him and his family well bcos of Brady.
His parents come to Taryn, Brady and his games etc.
It is fascinating to me that Matthew is so very much, "I did this", 'it is my fault", "we didn't play well enough", "the other team is better" etc.
I typed this as I was listening to this so there will be mistakes. LOLs.

reply roundup!
had to put these on hold for a while for personal reasons </3 they're likely to still be infrequent, but in honor of kirb2k!
(my notes would only load back to mid september so I missed a couple weeks sorry :c but be warned that this is a long one! it's 3 entire months' worth!)
also, reminder that kirb2k ends tomorrow!!! preorders, commissions, and auctions will all close at noon pst on sunday december 17th! everything is linked in the pinned post or filed under the tag kirb2k!
first is one more birthday kirb from my friend @sleepy-sheep-wizard:
Tumblr media
Realized halfway thru that I don’t know what Kirby looks like off the top of my head, so I got funky with it. Happy birthday, thank you for being a good friend
thank you again friend <3 getting funky with it is truly in the spirit of just drawing a little guy for fun, I love his little hat in particular.

I have! I got it very shortly after it came out, I had a really good time with it. I've been slowly replaying it recently with my partner, they were kind of fond of kirby just by proxy but since we started playing they adore bandee now and say he never gets enough screen time XD I'm glad you also had fun!
on [mice] @ceylonsilvergirl said: girls like swarms of things, right?
idk bro my wife wasn't so big on it when I got a gig housing 30 mice, but maybe she's weird. I liked them. (sadly one of the best paying jobs I've ever had up until the owner lost it and abandoned them with me, yes I still took care of them for the rest of their little lives) (and yes I also got my wife's okay before I took them on in the first place)
on [covid] @mordantivore said: reading posts from when the era of covid safety was declared anathema and ended is haunting. we were so desperate to find ppl willing to help us stay alive. there are fewer of us now bc “allies” are worthless & more of us have died
yeah. fuck. I'm lucky that the people in closest proximity to me are at least moderately careful, but me and my wife and partner are usually the only ones wearing masks anywhere we go except sometimes the employees and I know they don't always wear them when they're out without me.

on [zelda] @chaos-squared said: Good job!! I’ve had it for longer yet still haven’t completed it ;w;
nothing wrong with that! I only finished it as quickly and thoroughly as I did because I was basically bedridden for all of october, as long as you enjoy the time you do spend with a game it doesn't really matter how much time you spend or how far you get.

Still mota hockey au
Do you know who esle is on the team? You were sepaking of Curt (and Crosby?) But is there any other 100th with them
Croz is second string left ( bit of a grocery stick til he gets bumped from third to second with Douglass, then becomes a real Grinder)
Rosie's on first string with Buck (plays hard, passes well just an all around good guy)
Curt, final member of the first string trio (certified goon despite his height, sick dangle, nasty slapshot and his uppercut has claimed many a mans teeth)
^ original post of the AU but since this is no longer just a throwaway post lets talk about what these guys DO and also who else we got.
*cracks knuckles* its education time
So hockey is a pretty wild sport. it's fast paced as hell, few real breaks or stoppages. You can be playing for 17 minutes straight sometimes and this is active play. you are RUNNING (well, skating)
Basic setup of a team:
You've got your starting Goaltender. usually the older more experienced of the two and then a backup. Usually the starting goalie plays the whole game sometimes they switch off halfway through. backup tendy is there in case and injury happens or the starting tendy is playing a shit game. Usually they'll have extra reserves they can call up (One year Penguins had to pull their 4th level backup dude was literally away at college and had to be flown in. he was good but mad inconsistent)
Bucky is starting goaltender, his backup is Jack Kidd.
Then you have your defensemen. All hockey players are big bois usually. these guys are the big boys of the big boys. total number of D-men per play is 2 and usually a team will run the same combos of two because some guys have better chemistry than others. Usually theres 3-4 sets (or strings) of defensemen. They're categorized by skill level. So first string are the best, fourth would be worst/the new guys. Sometimes they'll switch it up and throw a new guy with first or second string so he can get some schooling
I think for Dmen first string we've got Alex and Demarco They're a solid set-up and Demarco plays REALLY well off Bucky they know where each other is instinctually.
Forwards First string are USUALLy the star players of any team. they're generally the faces of the franchise though sometimes the goaltenders fill that role too. Forwards also are a set of 3 instead of 2. Like I said above that trip is Buck, Rosie and Curt. Buck and Rosie are pretty standard forwards but Curt is a little unusual as he's also kind of the team goon (brawler)
generally D-men are the fighters. they don't tend to be high-scorers and yes Curt isn't as high scoring as Rosie or Buck but he's got a high assist score and is in a very respectable spot
(moment of appreciation for my fave Goon Reavo)
Tumblr media
youtube
youve got two types of fights in a hockey game usually. one is very hot headed spur of the moment brawl. usually this is after a dirty hit and the refs try to break it up. What Reavo is doing here is more of a gentleman's fight. it's something both parties agree too and as you can see the refs still call and end to it but more when sensing when the guys are done. It's conducted in a certain way (holding the other guys shoulder) and hits are really only to the face. Fights are used to motivate the team and the crowd, to settle some tension or to warn a guy off of targeting a teammate.
I like Reaves cause he's a beast but he does it the right way, hes not trying to truly hurt anyone like some guys do.
Thats Curts job on top of scoring. he defends Gale a LOT
So Crosby is also a forward. His narrative is similar where he struggles a lot to find his groove and so he's third string with Bubbles and Murph at first. But part of hocky is knowing how to slot guys together so it's Gales idea to bump Crosby up to second string (so second in skill only to first string rosie curt and buck) and he does better there. He's with Douglas and Blakely
third string is Bubbles, Murph and Brady.
I think Babyface and Quinn are the two rookie defensemen

LBTE: Jared (114-117)
We've got a Jared on the move. But only after he's forced to feel far more feelings than he would like.
If you want to read along, the series page is here. All previous parts under the ‘liveblogging the end’ tag.
114-Rejection
The Oilers go to Calgary. And like, Jared’s not excluding himself in that. He’s on the flight, obviously, because scratched players travel with the team — the whole point of having more dudes on your roster than on the bench is so they’re there if someone gets hurt or sick last minute, or like, married a Flame and is subsequently getting punished for it.
All very common occurrences.
It’s not a long walk to his apartment, and he feels this fundamental sense of relief as soon as he walks in the door, gives the concierge a smile and a wave as he heads for the elevator. Home.
Hi James! (Add him to the name twin pile with all the Not-Mikes and Yes-Mikes, and multiple unrelated Bradleys)
Jared barely hears Bryce’s key in the lock before Bryce is behind him in the kitchen, chin on his shoulder and hands curling around his hips. He must’ve like, sprinted it.
He didn't walk, I'll tell you that.
“If you want to eat you can’t distract me,” Jared says, and Bryce digs his chin in harder before he kisses Jared’s neck, making it very clear where lunch lies on his priority list.
“No lunch?” Jared asks.
There’s a hint of teeth in the next kiss.
Bryce has priorities. Lunch is not on his list.
“We are not having sex in the kitchen,” Jared mumbles against Bryce’s mouth as he fights Bryce’s shirt buttons, and Bryce makes a disagreeable noise in response, but starts steering them towards their room, so that’s good.
Jared has sacrificed his safety for shower sex, but he draws the line at health. No kitchen sex. They make food there. (Okay, HE makes food there)
Every time he thinks Bryce has reached the plateau of being the best at blow jobs, he figures out how to make it even better. It’s like. There’s probably a hockey metaphor in there, applying himself to his game, getting on the scoresheet, something, but Jared’s too come dumb to think of one.
I admire Bryce's dedication to be the best at all his passions: hockey, marriage, sucking dick.
Hmm,” Bryce says, and kisses Jared’s shoulder in a blatant violation of the no-touching policy. Jared will allow it.
That edict lasted ten seconds.
He cuts it close: less than a minute after curfew there’s a curt knock on the door. Jared exchanges a glance with Julius, a silent ‘who’s stuck getting up?’, but considering Jared’s probably the reason it’s happening — they periodically check in on at least the ELC guys to keep them honest, but Jared suspects this is not a random spot check — he gets up and goes to the door.
“Good kid,” Mulligan says, then turns on his heel and walks away.
Mulligan hates everything about this situation.
Mulligan didn’t even check if Julius was there. He could have been out partying.
lol, okay Jared.
Julius is bobbing his head to whatever Finnish death metal band he’s obsessed with at the moment — they all sound the same to Jared, and he bets they would even if they were singing — screaming? — in English — while peeling an orange with his teeth like a total weirdo.
I love him.
He shoots the nauseated face Julius’ way.
Julius looks down at his phone when it buzzes, then pushes his headphones down, scowling at Jared. “What?” he asks.
“Peel the orange with your hands,” Jared says.
He really should have expected the half-peeled orange that comes flying his way.
“Go back to your husband,” Julius mutters.
“Would if I could,” Jared says.
Brothers <3
Jared works very hard on keeping his face completely stoic when the goal goes in. It helps that Bryce just scored on Jared’s goalie, which tempers the flare of vicious satisfaction he feels, thinking of Deslauriers’ face right now. Jared doesn’t like it when people score on his goalies, and that includes his husband. It’s rude.
It's poor etiquette to score on your husband's goalie.
They’re wheels up in nine hours. Less than ninety minutes until curfew, and maybe this was a bad idea, maybe he should have gone back to the hotel to stew instead of getting not enough of Bryce again, the time so short he’s just going to feel worse when he leaves, feel cheated. He would have seen even less of Bryce if he was playing, so it’s not the scratch, except it is, it’s the scratch, and the distance, and he puts his fucking ass on the line every single time he steps on the ice, worked so fucking hard to get there, and —
Jared’s so tired.
Oh Jared.
“They gave you first star, right?” Jared asks into Bryce’s chest.
“Yeah,” Bryce says.
“Good,” Jared says. “You deserved it.”
"Thanks,” Bryce says, then, “Sorry,” and Jared closes his eyes when he feels Bryce’s lips brush his hair.
Oh buds.
115 - Barrage
So yeah, consensus is it makes no fucking sense logistically to scratch him. Jared’s glad they noticed, though, of course they do — you cheer for a team as bad as the Oilers, a team that’s been bad as long as they’ve been bad, you’re going to question every roster decision, especially one that makes your already bad team weaker.
Flames fandom dies hard.
“This is such a fucking mess,” Jared says.
“I know, I’m sorry,” Greg says. “I’m going to call Summers, okay? He’s got a lot of influence, he might be able to swing something I can’t.”
Low key every time Greg is out of his depth, he's calling Dave. And Dave's picking up, of course, because the one time Greg DIDN'T call him, that lead to Jared coming out to Oilers management while Bryce was about to hit the postseason.
Jared shuts his eyes for a moment. Types out You too., then rewatches Deslauriers throwing him under the bus. He doesn’t know if the hint of a smirk he’s detecting is real or if it’s just what he’s projecting onto that stupid fucking face.
Jared is projecting it, but like -- who could blame him.
“GMs on poorly performing teams don’t have the best job security,” Greg says, and Jared bristles a little, even though the Oilers are an objectively poorly performing team. “But they tend to last at least a few years with the benefit of the doubt before they get chucked. And Halla’s bought him time. He’s going to be there for at least a couple more years I think. You want to be across from him at the negotiating table when you’re an RFA?”
“That’s almost two years away,” Jared says.
“Two years he’s going to undermine you, two years he can do whatever he wants to you without repercussions, because people aren’t going to think he’s scratching you for no reason, they’re going to assume there’s something behind that, and they’re going to start wondering what that is. Unless we file a grievance, but that could blow up too,” Greg says. It’s stuff Jared’s already thought of, but it’s different, starker, to hear it from his agent.
“I’m not going to bullshit you, Jared. If he wants to sink your career, he wouldn’t even have to try hard. A few more offhand comments about personal reasons, a few more scratches, they’re going to start assuming things about you. And you’re talented, but you’re not the level of talented where a team’s going to gamble that it’s worth it. Once you get a reputation, that doesn’t go away. And he knows that.”
Greg’s talking more confidently than usual, no hesitation, and Jared thinks he’s repeating what Summers told him.
Practically verbatim from Dave's mouth, bless him.
116 - Unease
Jared doesn’t know what he expects after Greg tells Deslauriers he wants a trade. Well, he sort of does: he expects to be traded.
Fair. But also not always accurate. I've seen dudes stuck in franchises for seasons after the request. Which honestly should be something the NHLPA should be on more, that a trade request doesn't start a formal process or a clock or SOMETHING. It's like one of those 'door close' buttons that isn't connected to shit. But then, I suppose some franchises would have a real hard time keeping anybody.
some of the hardest calls he’s ever had to make, and one he kind of wishes had been a call, because telling Julius in person lead to Julius staring at him, stone-faced, colder and colder as Jared talked, and he didn’t say more than a syllable at a time to Jared for literal days after. Everyone else Jared talked to saw the sense in it, even if they didn’t like it, but Jared thinks Julius took it personally.
I mean, it's hard not to be hurt by 'Hello, I, your only friend in North America, have requested to leave you', even though Julius understands why.
Every day Jared wakes up thinking it might be his last day as an Oiler, and every day it isn’t he finds himself appreciating the team more. Not Deslauriers, obviously, but the gruff no bullshit of Mulligan’s coaching style, the quiet solidity of Julius beside him at dinner or on the plane, the loud talent of Julius beside him on the ice, the room around him, guys around him. Jared finds himself agreeing to go out more, dragging Julius with him, hoping partly that Julius makes more friends — Jared doesn’t want to worry about him if he leaves him behind — but also because he wants to, now that it’s something that could end at any moment.
Oh Jared, you're the friend Julius deserves too.
Maybe it’s something he should do with his new team from the start, whenever or whoever that’ll be.
Maybe!!
Deslauriers hasn’t scratched him again, hasn’t said anything about him to the media, and Jared guesses that makes sense. Doing either of those would hurt Jared’s trade value, and Greg’s right: he’s going to need to get a good asset back or the fanbase is going to be pissed, especially with the chemistry him and Julius have.
Also the bromance. Fans hate when you break up a bromance. But that's another kind of chemistry.
And who knows, maybe the second Jared asked for a trade Deslauriers twirled his moustache and went ‘then I won’t trade Matheson, just to spite him’.
Deslauriers does not have a moustache, for the record.
There’s a lot of talk that the Oilers are looking to trade their own captain, which Jared is — kind of fine with. Jacobi’s a UFA at the end of the season, so it’d be good to get something for him that can make them a stronger team in the future. Also he’s annoying.
Jared.
“Jared,” Julius says, with this scandalised but delighted voice, like he can’t believe Jared just said that but he’s not actually disagreeing.
Julius is with me.
The nerves, and they don’t have a game tomorrow, just practice, so whatever. Jared can have a drink. Jared drinks.
The statement every drinker makes, of course.
He’s not just their best player by a long shot, Jared’s wholly convinced he’s going to end his career in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Nineteen years old and he’s already breaking the ankles of the vets trying to defend against him. Jared shudders to think what he’s going to play like at twenty-two, let alone twenty-seven.
Dude I based his play off is, at 24, currently the NHL's points leader (this may change, because it's tight as fuck up there, but he'll still be in the top 5 when I post this), so: big hype for 27, widely considered a forward's career peak. (And when Julius goes to KC)
Edit: he's still at the top, but he's now 25!
Great, the sad thoughts are invading. Jared gives his glass of wine a distrustful look.
I love him.
I won’t miss you at all if I get traded,” Jared says.
“Yes you will,” Julius says.
“Just on the ice,” Jared says. “Off the ice you suck.”
Julius stalks to the kitchen, all ruffled, like a furious cat, and Jared grins fondly after him, but makes sure his face is neutral when Julius comes stalking back out, beer in hand. Jared doesn’t know how you can take a passive-aggressive sip of beer, but Julius pulls it off.
Also love Julius. One thing that made me sad about moving all these pieces into place for Jared's move was leaving Julius behind in Edmonton.
Jared’s got a fun morning planned of mainlining coffee and trying not to have a heart attack.
These seem to be contradictory activities.
“Did you just get up?” Julius asks judgmentally when Jared opens the door.
“Yeah,” Jared says through a yawn. “Have I been traded? Are you the trade fairy?”
Julius rolls his eyes at him and pushes past him, putting two coffees and a bag of McDonald’s on the table.
The trade fairy brings McDonalds.
“Healthy,” Jared says, but it’s not like he’s ever going to turn down a McDonald’s hashbrown. He roots into the bag, finds two egg McMuffins and nothing else. “No hashbrowns?” he asks.
Julius shrugs. “Too greasy.”
Jared grumpily unwraps his sandwich. Hashbrowns are the best thing at McDonalds, no contest. Too greasy. Fuck Halla.
Subpar McDonalds. And big Joey Munroe energy from Julius.
“I refuse to learn I’m traded on TV,” Jared says.
Could be worse: could learn you're traded because you got a call from TSN asking about your feelings on being traded, and then have to awkwardly ask them where exactly you've been traded to. Not that that has ever happened.
He opens twitter, goes to the account of the guy who’s known as an insider and has earned that title, as far as Jared’s concerned, scrolling through the updates.
I kind of ride the line re: media personalities in this 'verse and still haven't made a full call on whether they're the same, or some are, or the like, because almost everything in YCMAL 'verse outside of hockey are the same (celebrities, media, fads, etc) but they're hockey adjacent so -- this is either Bob McKenzie or some dude named Rob MacKenzie, whatever!
Anyway before he retired I had a tab with Bob McKenzie's twitter permanently open on trade deadline, free agent frenzy, etc, even when I had the TV on for live coverage (which I inevitably did, though sometimes I put it on mute when things started to slow down). Those days are holidays for me.
A few bottom six guys, a slightly surprising move of one of the top Bruins, considering they’re in the playoff picture. Making room for someone big, maybe.
Maybe.
Jared eats his hashbrownless breakfast
Jared Matheson has never held a grudge in his life.
Julius has an impressive poker face considering he just got promoted to first line centre.
I mean he's a little concerned about the dude sitting beside him, still.
Greg huffs out a laugh. “He got a bit,” he says. “Do you want to know where you’re going?”
He doesn’t.
“Yeah,” Jared says after a moment. “Lay it on me.”
It was a mean thing to leave this part here. I'm not apologizing or anything, though. Doing it put everyone in Jared's shoes more effectively than anything else would have.
116 - Reconfiguration
Jared’s been to Boston all of twice before, both times for games. Not long stays, right in the middle of roadies, and he can barely recall them, though he remembers how the games both went — loss, loss.
Jared is going to continue to have some trouble with the Bruins going forward.
“The Bruins are going to trade me?” Jared asks.
“I’m pretty sure they’re finalising it right now,” Greg says. “Sit tight, okay?”
The author giveth, the author taketh away.
“This isn’t like, trade two of three, is it?” Jared asks, because sucky or not, it’s the best case scenario. Or like, second best. “I’m not about to be shipped to, like, Florida or something?”
“No, they were desperate to get someone good on the right wing,” Greg says. “You’re a Canuck.”
I cannot overstate how many wingers the Canucks went through that season on the Cursed Line.
Julius leans over Jared’s suitcase to hug him, sudden and pointy and borderline painful — he’s skinny, but he’s strong, he wouldn’t have made it this far if he wasn’t, no matter how much talent he has — and Jared, after a short, slightly terrified pause, hugs him back.
<33333 Jared and Julius hugs get to me the way Jared and Erin hugs do. Possibly because in both cases Jared is the MORE enthusiastic hugger, which is honestly impressive.
Dammit, this is the exact reason he wasn’t taking calls. He needs to pack. He needs to be ready to go wherever the Canucks need him. He needs to not be crying on his bed — fuck, it’s going to cost so much to ship his bed to Vancouver, and probably take forever, he shouldn’t even bother until he knows if he’s there for next season too — with a clinging, all-bone Finn attached to him.
Jared is crying, clinging to Julius, all emotion, and then boom — damn the shipping costs are gonna be whack. I love him.
Fuck, who’s going to feed Julius when Jared leaves? The Oilers won’t just let their franchise player starve, will they?
“Please learn how to cook,” Jared begs.
“Fuck you,” Julius says into his shoulder, then lets go, Jared’s lungs suddenly getting airflow again, though his breathing’s still a little too shaky. “Packing,” he says.
“Yeah,” Jared says. “Packing.”
<3 Them. As excited I was about getting to return to my boys Gabe and Steve, and excited for Jared’s reaction to Dmitry, I was slightly distraught myself about Julius going from main supporting cast to guest star (joke’s on me for that too).
“Boston, huh. They’re — they’re a good team, they’re a playoff team.”
“That was like, a whole team ago,” Jared says, interrupting the glummest sounding set of compliments he’s ever heard. “My time as a Bruin has come and gone. Didn’t even get a jersey.”
Give Jared a Bruins jersey.
“I’m betting that’s an understatement,” Foster says. “Just wanted to let you know we’re really looking forward to having you in a Nucks uniform. You’ve been a total pain in the ass to play against, so it’ll be nice to have you on our side.”
Here comes Brian Foster. My fave GM, and it ain't close. (Barrett Rutledge probably takes second, but again -- huge gap)
“I won’t keep you, I’m sure you’ve got a hundred things to do,” Foster says. “You’re at home, right? Not on the road?”
“No,” Jared says. “I’m at home.” For however long it’s home.
“Good, it was the worst when I got traded on the road,” Foster says.
“Didn’t see most of my shit until the offseason. I’m rambling. I do that. A lot. Just. Before I let you go — my job’s to make the best team I can, and I made it better today. I feel really good about how you’re going to fit on this roster, and I hope you do too.”
I loved him already.

Steddie Fic Recs: AU Edition
This time containing recent AU's I've read!
I Need To Know by beetlesandstars (Teen+, 9.3k, Complete)
Spider-Man keeps knocking on Eddie's window, is the thing. Eddie's not sure what the guy's looking for, be it the company, or a warm place to stay for a couple hours, but begrudgingly, he finds himself leaving the window unlocked before going to bed. Or, the one where Eddie's a little bit in love with Steve Harrington, and starts bitching about it with the kind, if a bit cagey, vigilante, Spider-Man.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather by prufrocks (Explicit, 41.6k, Complete)
Steve doesn't know what the invisible force that attacked him in the woods is, but he does know three things for sure: that Robin's cryptid podcast is somehow making more money than his Scoops Ahoy manager job; that every seven years something crawls out of a network of tunnels underneath the woods outside of Hawkins, and now it's out for revenge; and that it would be really nice if poltergeists would stop beating him up when he's trying to flirt with the local ghost whisperer.
Stepping over the line by GibbousLunation (Mature, 14.8k, Complete)
“Look,” the guy held up a hand, ring clad and palm out, showing off a complicated tattoo under his sleeves in the process. “I don’t normally go around offering random Ken doll looking models help but, seems like you’re really having a shit one.” “You could say that.” Steve sighed. / A road trip story mostly about sticking around.
throw me one by Adure (Explicit, 41.9k, Complete)
Eddie sits down on the other end of the couch and they both take a drink. Eddie looks - good, which feels strange for Steve to notice now. Steve can't help but watch his throat as he swallows, is oddly captivated when he pulls the drink from his mouth, licks his top lip. Steve's drunk. That's what it is. That's why he zeroes in on Eddie's mouth, leans in- "Hold up." Eddie leans away, surprised smile on his face. "What? You said-" "I said I'd throw you one." "And that means..." "You keep your lips to yourself, Harrington." (Steve and Eddie are friends with benefits with the important caveat - no kissing, ever, under any circumstances; modern AU)
carve your name into my chest by hexiewrites (Explicit, 42.8k, Series is in progress I think)
Eddie Munson just wanted to play hockey. That's almost all he's ever wanted, since he was old enough to realize it was an option for him. And now he's at the top of his game, one of the best players in the NHL. Everything would have been perfect... if it wasn't for the small matter of the thing he's got going with his long time rival, goalie Steve Harrington.
Who Shall Sing Me Into Deathsleep by teddywesworl (Explicit, 37.9k, Complete)
Eddie snarled, and the depth of the sound sent a shock through Steve, and his surprise was such that he stopped fighting altogether and really looked at his attacker for the first time: of a height with him, though leaner. Stubble on the strong chin. A dusting of black hair on the back of the hand that held the knife that was suddenly pressed against his throat. Wild, dark eyes, gleaming with death. (A mirror, perhaps, of a boathouse and a broken bottle: the exhilaration of potential that feeds you just as it does me.) Or, another Ayes prompt fill: AU where Steve comes to the village witch Eddie for a spell to fall in love and Eddie tells him he needs to come back every week to help brew it until the day comes that the spell is ready but Steve doesn’t need it anymore.

NO. 8 EVERYTHING HURTS AND I'M DYING
Stomach Pain
Your whimpers had become the soundtrack to the day. You had woken up regressed and refused to age up. You had been extremely cuddly and clingy the whole day, although that wasn’t extremely unusual. You had spent the day just a tiny baby, needing your moms to hold you.
Your moms were trying their best, they really were. At practice, they switched off who was with you. Usually- in the rare scenario where you were regressed at practice- you still loved to play. But today you adamantly refused. Kelley and Alex took turns holding you on the sidelines as you nuzzled as close to them as you could. Becky had known you and your moms for long enough to know that something was wrong with you, so she sent the coach a glare before practice began, begging him to protest.
The worst part of practice was easily when Kelley and Alex both needed to be on the field. Luckily the goalies were taking a break, so they were able to hand you off to Ash. With a quick kiss to your head and an apology to Ash, they left your sobbing body in her arms. She managed to calm you down enough to the point where you were simply lying listlessly in her arms. Your eyes followed your moms on the field, but they showed no sign of understanding.
You were well and truly small, no one on the team besides Kelley and Alex had seen you that small. You were nonverbal and completely dependent on them for everything. This also meant you cried- a lot. The two of them were barely able to stop your crying today. All through practice, and bus rides, meals and cool downs, you cried or whimpered or made some noise of distress. It was heartbreaking to everyone on the team. They all took turns trying to calm you and give your moms a break. Ash and Ali gave you a bath after practice which just consisted of you listlessly sitting in the tub. Christen and Tobin tried to handle nap time. After an hour of singing and reading and rocking, you finally were able to sleep restlessly for only 20 minutes. You were even more upset when you woke up. Your uncle- Frat Daddy Jr- stole you for a movie afternoon with the other youngsters. This entailed you crying quietly into Emily’s chest for the first half of the movie. After she slipped out to use the restroom, you found yourself sobbing in Mal’s arms. Luckily, Emily returned quickly and had grabbed your pacifier, so the second half was filled with your quiet hiccups.
The whole team tried to get you to eat. When you wouldn’t even eat the ice cream you were offered, your moms decided to pull out their secret weapon. You hadn’t even had half of your bottle before you spit it out, crying.
The day continued in a similar fashion. After you refused dinner, your moms took you up to bed and got you in pajamas, figuring an early night was in order. A knock on the door put that plan on hold.
Becky came into the room, looking at where you were pitifully propped up against the pillows. You were in footie pajamas, a pacifier in your mouth. You looked absolutely miserable.
“Hi sweetheart,” Becky starts, sitting by your feet, “I know that you have had a really hard day, and that’s okay. Sometimes we just have hard days. But, I need you to answer a very important question for me, okay?”
At this, you nod your head.
“Good job! Is something wrong? Why have you been so sad all day?”
Again, you nod.
“Ok, do you think you can tell me what’s wrong? Maybe I can help you.”
You take a breath, trying to form your feelings into thoughts and your thoughts into words. Your face is scrunched in concentration until finally you manage to communicate.
“Belly”
They were smart girls, they could figure it out.
“Belly? Does your belly hurt?”
You whimper and nod. Finally, someone knew what was wrong.
After a few more questions, you shaking and nodding your head in response, Becky has somewhat of an idea of what is going on. Pulling Kelley to the door with her as Alex snuggles you in bed, she says in a whisper,
“I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’ll admit I’m worried. I think you guys should probably take her to the ER.”
Kelley nods, “I’ve honestly been thinking about it, I’m sure Alex has been too. Something is definitely wrong with her.”
With a ‘feel better’ and a pat on your leg, Becky is out of the door.
—-
2 hours later, the group chat goes off. Everyone grabs their phone at the collective ding, wanting to get any update they could. A text from Alex showed a video of you in a hospital gown. Kelley was sitting on the edge of the bed, cradling you as she rocked back and forth. Your hand, gripping onto her shirt, showed an IV getting some fluids into you. When the video starts, Alex’s voice is heard.
‘A quick update. Little miss here has such an ouchy tummy because she needs her appendix out. She’s getting some fluids and pain meds now and they’re hoping to get her up to surgery in the next few hours. We won’t be back tomorrow, but hopefully we will be out of here the day after. After that, she’ll be out for a few weeks.’
The camera moves close to the bed as Alex’s voice changes slightly, ‘hey bunny, do you want to say hi to the camera? Our friends are watching!’
Your hand unhooks briefly from Kelley to wave before returning back to its previous position.
‘I think that’s all for our update here. We’re still feeling kinda sick and really sad, but we’ll feel better soon. I’ll text you guys when they bring her up and any updates I get.’
The video ends with Kelley leaning her head down, pressing her lips to your hair. The team smiles as they hear Alex start to coo at you before the video ends. You were in good hands. As much as they all hated not being with you, they knew you would be safe.

What's your favourite position in hockey and who is your favourite on that position?
It would be soooo soooo easy for me to say Goalies. Because goalies are, in the broadest sense, the guys I like and connect to even on teams that I don't particularly like. If I don't know anyone else on the team, there's a good good chance I'll at least know the goalie.
but everyone likes goalies. And I do too! but are they my *favorite?* I don't think so.
And I could tell you the position of my favorite individual players - centers, mostly, or more generally just forwards. Because they're the second most prominent guys on the team, right?
Because Hockey is a game of oppositional forces. Guys trying to score (forwards) and guys trying to stop the puck (goalies). But there's also defensemen. Stoic, enigmatic. What do defensemen even do?
Make me love them, of course.
A bad defenseman is immediately noticeable. A great defenseman is immediately noticeable. A good to mediocre defenseman is - well. Not invisible, but he's just. A guy. A body on the ice to most people. What's he doing there? He must be doing something. And often they are.
That anonymity can go either way.
A bad goalie is going to get pulled, or their defensemen are going to protect him. A forward who can't score can be shored up by other forwards or defensemen.
Who helps defensemen? Other defensemen (and really really good forwards). Most forwards don't have the defensive skills, or the time, or both to help defensemen out all the time. And goalies have to stay in the net.
And so, because I'm bisexual, and because I like things that are sometimes bad and people don't like, and things that do the hard jobs even when it's not glamorous.... Defensemen are probably my favorite.
So - who's my favorite? I don't fuckin know bud. Your guess is as good as mine. It's just as inscrutable and up for debate as to what makes a good defenseman. Scoring? (Karlsson, Hughes, Makar) Blocked shots? (Martinez, McNabb) Skating? (Theodore, Hughes, Makar)
My answer to this is: it's a personality contest and I love Ben Hutton, Barbie Girl. He's a perfectly decent defenseman - in and out of VGK's line up as the 7th defenseman in a line up with 3 excellent d-pairs. Always smiling and good natured. A whole sleeve of tattoos. Birthday: 4/20. Doesn't like chocolate (he's just like me fr fr).
But IS Ben Hutton good? Yes, I say. Unequivocally. He's VGK's floating 7th d-man for a reason. Always ready to fill in, seamless when he's in. Just because he didn't work out in VAN doesn't make him bad. Just because he's not in the full-time line up doesn't make him bad. VGK's system works for him in the same way that it makes Hague and Whitecloud look great (they are), and McNabb and Theodore look even better.
My favorite players of that position would be Theodore, Hamilton, Chabot, Borgen - players all who i genuinely enjoy watching play hockey for hockey's sake.

whos your favorite player on every team?
Ooh, this is a fun one! Under the cut :) Also not gonna use former Devils, and gonna try to stay away from just naming the most known player on each team... we'll see.
Anaheim Ducks: Lukas Dostal is doing a damn good job tending that net. I'm super excited to see where he goes!
Arizona Coyotes: Of course, our pride king Travis Dermott!
Boston Bruins: Look. I said I was gonna not name the most known players. But you can't expect me not to name a goalie for the Bruins! Impossible! I'm gonna give the edge to Jeremy Swayman.
Buffalo Sabres: Probably Jeff Skinner, honestly. Most cursed man in hockey. Does that make me old?
Calgary Flames: I don't follow the Flames much but I do really like Cody Taylor.
Carolina Hurricanes: Pyotr Kochetkov is, in my opinion, the only Cane with rights.
Chicago Blackhawks: All Star Jason Dickinson just seems like a funny dude. Well, for having to play for Chicago...
Colorado Avalanche: I am forgiving Ross Colton for that really shitty shift against the Devils because he's holding Woody's hand and they're cute. But I'm watching you, mister.
Columbus Blue Jackets: Alexandre Texier. He's French! And played in Switzerland last year! And is suffering!
Dallas Stars: Thomas Harley is carrying half my fantasy teams and he seems like such a fun dude!
Detroit Red Wings: Jake Walman, hitting the griddy, and getting a bobblehead after it.
Edmonton Oilers: I am not immune to Ryan McLeod propaganda. Just look at his smile!
Florida Panthers: Sam Reinhart, the highest-paid Panther, has no goals and one assist in his last six games and his ice time is declining. Where are the Sabres fans who told me how much they would miss him? When I hear of all the positive qualities the team lacked in the past, I think of Reinhart - lol nah that's just the Reino copypasta. Love him!
Los Angeles Kings: Long Distance Girlfriend Kevin Fiala and his hysterical wife!
Minnesota Wild: Mats Zuccarello is very short. This is always fun. Especially because his stick is very long. Also fun.
Montreal Canadiens: Juraj Slafkovsky is not only worryingly homoerotic with every single Slav he meets, he is also trying valiantly to overcome the bust narrative, and he's silly and goofy! What more do you want?
Nashville Predators: Roman Josi. I am not immune to a good-looking Swiss man.
New Jersey Devils: All of them. I'm in a Dougie Hamilton mood right now, though. (Aka, I miss him :'( )
New York Islanders: The Real Sebastian Aho, simply because it's funny there's two of them. Also, this one is prettier.
New York Rangers: There's a fic out there that makes me somewhat like Braden Schneider.
Ottawa Senators: I'm saluting Jacob Bernard-Docker for his services to my fantasy teams.
Philadelphia Flyers: The image of Known USNTDP Member Cam York fielding calls from Zegras on how to take care of his platonic soulmate is truly peak.
Pittsburgh Penguins: The Other Smitty, Reilly Smith. I am predictable. I have a type.
San Jose Sharks: Anthony Duclair! And his many sons on the team.
Seattle Kraken: Kailer Yamamoto. I just like him because he's short, okay? He also seems to have a very fun character, which I admire.
St. Louis Blues: Colton Parayko, for no other reason than it's a very good hockey name.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Brayden Point is another of those players that just eternally carries my fantasy teams.
Toronto Maple Leafs: I think Calle Jarnkrok is eternally underrated. And I'm right.
Vancouver Canucks: Stanley Cup Champion Teddy Blueger. He deserves it.
Vegas Golden Knights: I simply believe that if one does not at least admire Jack Eichel for his dedication to being a bitch and ruining all the narratives, one does not exist to me.
Washington Capitals: They have Dylan Strome from the fics! It just takes some time, little girl you're in the middle of the ride, everything everything will be just fine, everything everything will be alright alright...
Winnipeg Jets: Nino Niederreiter. God, I hope he finds a home some day. I hope it could be Winnipeg.
