I recently went into the city, I was sitting on a bench, smoking a cigarette, listening to music and being consumed by it. Someone gently tapped my shoulder bringing me back to reality.

The man asked me if I spoke English and of course I answered yes. Personally I find it quite a bit uncomfortable talking to strangers but I didn’t want to appear rude so I listened to him. He mentioned his struggles finding a job and saying he can’t get back to his home because he doesn’t have money and how his wife is pregnant and how I asked the police for help.

At that point I knew that he wanted money and that I have to kindly tell him I don’t have any on me. He responded by asking me how old I am and I answered truthfully. He probably assumed I was older. People always think I am, even when I speak they don’t hear an 18 year old but an old soul someone wise beyond their words.

He said he is a good person wanting to spread kindness and love so he started looking in his bag for money. He showed me all the coins he had saying I can take what I want, I declined. He insisted, handing me 70 cents, before I could react he got up and left. I was left in shock money still in hand wondering why. I didn’t want the money and now I was wondering if he was more human than I could ever be.
