I remember reading one of your posts about Nessa's Drednaw acting like a spoiled child. But what about the other gym leaders? Do they also have pokemon who's personalities are hard to manage?

Milo’s pokemon are pretty easy to manage. They’re grass types that were raised on a farm, what do they have to be bratty about?

Kabu’s Arcanine is full of energy, but he means well. And Centiskorch doesn’t know what boundaries are.

Bea’s pokemon are trained seriously. They’re professionals and they act like it. No nonsense here. That Bea can’t handle anyway.

Allister’s pokemon are only a scourge to everyone else. He doesn’t have any problems them himself.

Opal’s pokemon are, like her, very opinionated. But they’re too old to put up a fight with her.

Melony’s Eiscue likes to get water everywhere because she like to carry snow in from outside or get icecubes from the freezer and put them in Melony’s bed. Other than that, they’re very sweet.

Gordie’s Stonjourner can be very stubborn, so training can be difficult, but Gordie has methods of dealing with it.

Piers’ Obstagoon is very goofy and stubborn. He crawls into Piers’ bed even when he’s been told he’s not welcome, and he likes to get into mischief. Also, his Malamar is a jerk sometimes.

Raihan trains his pokemon a lot. They’re very well behaved. That being said, his Sandaconda and Torkoal are very lazy. 

Leon’s Haxorus has a huge temper and can get very aggressive over little things. Leon’s other pokemon are there to keep him in check during training, which sucks because Leon really would like to give him one on one training time.

From a general perspective:

Ableist articles like this are really annoying and dangerous. Most of these "habits" are much more often genuine Neurodivergent social mishaps than red flags for toxic people. A few are legit red flags, but the rest aren't, at all.

I think this article conflates Neurodivergent behaviour (which some allistic people are unnerved by because they don't understand) with danger wrongly and inaccurately.

More reliable behaviours to watch out for could have easily been pulled and expanded upon by the writer from mainstream and easily accessible sources about actual abuse psychology, Narcissistic Personality Disorder research, etc.

This feels like an errant correlation that's both exclusionary in terms of Neurodiversity and pretty irresponsible on the authors part. The last thing neurodiverse people need is the general public being primed to notice differences in eye contact and assuming that they're liable to end up in that person's freezer on the basis of that. The last thing people in general need is incorrect information about how to identify early warning signs of toxic or dangerous behaviour and relying on that and staying vulnerable to toxic or abusive behaviour as a result.

From a personal perspective:

I’m an Autistic woman, and I was raised by my mother, who has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. So I know I have learned narcissistic behaviours that I am working to unlearn. So, as you could imagine, ableist assumptions like those in the article are particularly dangerous for me and other autistic people with narcissistic parents.

his villain name is “freezer burn”! he didn’t choose it himself necessarily, moreso as the public started calling him it when his actions as a villain became more publicized, and he just sort of went with it

he’s masc - aligned agender and uses both he and they pronouns. he typically prefers to be referred to as they/them by close friends

he’s a big ol gay. likes boys

shouto is !! autistic! he was diagnosed with asperger’s at three. it’s pretty obvious and he has no interest in trying to hide it or act allistic -- he fluctuates between low and high empathy, struggles with social interaction, has severe sensory issues, has special interests, is very very anxious, stims frequently, etc. 

he’s also schizophrenic, depressed, n has adhd and complex ptsd. no he does not cope

shouto is selectively mute and for a period of time, primarily in his early childhood, did not speak at all except occasionally to his mother or siblings in very quite whispers when his father was not present. while he’s more comfortable speaking out loud since running from home, his speech is still somewhat affected from it and he tends to mumble a lot and speak in stops and starts.

he loves cats obviously but he really just adores all animals. if you hurt your pet he will find you and he will kill you

when he’s nervous or deep in thought, he tends to pace or hum to himself, the latter behavior being something he picked up from his mom

Me, several hours later on a Tumblr post because I still can’t speak beyond three words and flapping: IF YOU WERE JUST GOING TO FUCKING TELL ME ABOUT FUCKING HAMBURGERS WHY DIDN’T YOU FUCKING LEAD WITH THAT?

Seriously, in what universe does I just want to have a word with you naturally lead to “FYI, hamburgers, you’re going to want to make something else” and not yet another round of Serious Family Conversation?

The worst thing, though?

I feel like the whole thing was a set up to justify her anger at me.

If she respected me, my space and my inability to communicate, she’d have just said “FYI, we’re having hamburgers for tea” and left without trying to have a conversation. She’d have told me what I needed to know and gotten out of my space after my having told her that I cannot talk. That would have been respectful, considerate and kind, and it might have even generated enough good will that I could relax and start talking.

But she began the whole conversation as though she was trying to have a conversation (which was ignoring my needs) and then got mad because I was trying to defend my right to not have a conversation I was (and still am) incapable of having. Now in her mind she was trying to be helpful and I was being angry at her for being helpful, so I’m unreasonable. And I’m never really going to be able to talk about this or the thing that upset me into not talking in the first place, because, funnily enough, stressful verbal conversations are really hard, and now this whole thing is just a mess.

Allistics.

I’m supposed to be the one with a fucking communication disability. I’m the one who’s supposed to not get social norms. I’m supposed to be the one lacking empathy. I’m the one who’s supposed to find communicating with others difficult.

(And now she’s sprayed her room with her perfume that literally makes me sick, something she damn well knows. Thanks, Mum. Thanks. Good to know that you only lay off the perfume when you’re happy with me and actively seek to punish me with it when you’re angry with me.)

Prof. Alice Atley, Bitty’s advisor, is actually totally allistic. (C-c-c-combo breaker!) She’s also just this really warm, lovely person. Like if you are a trans lady waiting for a bathroom stall and lowkey panicking about someone looking at you and giving you a hard time? And Alice is in line behind you? She will strike up a conversation about the weather or something and you will just be like “why do I feel welcome and comfortable here is this supposed to be possible holy cow”. She might be magic.

Suzanne Bittle is incredibly kind, caring, loving, and also utterly badass when the moment calls for it? Like, she forced her high school to implement a comprehensive sex ed course when she was fourteen, in the face of half an entire church coming out supporting abstinence-only, by organizing the whole student body in support. Her yearbook caption said “Most Likely to Conquer World, And Then Bake It Pies”.

Caitlin Farmer is, like, seriously one of the best autistic pals you can have. Like, 90% of the time that everyone thinks that Chowder and Farmer have gone upstairs to have sex, they’re just escaping the overstimulating atmosphere.

(Caitlin is also super good at making people feel less anxious? Like, April was panicking once about losing her scholarship after she overpassed and gave up the game point after shanking two balls earlier, and Caitlin spent like an hour talking about how good her digs were until she calmed down.)

Speaking of April: she and March? Totally BPD buds. April didn’t actually know before she got to Samwell, but after a year of being March’s best friend and, like, reblogging Tumblr posts back and forth with Caitlin, she’s prrrrrretty sure of her self-diagnosis. They keep each other on a level keel, though.

And March totally knows that Holster has it bad for Ransom and they’re totally going to live together forever as soon as Ransom gets his head out of his ass, and it’s fine. Really. She and Ransom can just be a fling, it’ll be fine, and Holster really cares about the doof - they’ll be good for each other. And she already has a flavor of ice cream picked out and a pint of it in the freezer to split with April after she inevitably gets dumped.

(The day Ransom gets the three of them together to talk about maybe becoming a triad is officially the most confusing day of her LIFE. It’s two months after that before she’s convinced enough that their relationship will work to give the ice cream to Dex.)
