the more I think about it, the more I hate how L's death was handled in the anime. I love that Aizawa holds L's body too as well as Mogi, but they waited for Soichiro to come back from the hospital to let them know if L is actually dead, probably because they still had a slight hope that he might be still alive. They didn't leave him. They didn't sprint out of the room to go after Rem. They waited for a confirmation.

Death Note Lifespans
I was bored so I took it upon myself to calculate DN characters lifespans down to the minute—estimates, of course, I'm not a math wiz.
Something I did notice is that only a few of them have actual, realistic lifespans—BUT this is what canon gave us. Idk if there's a canon reason for it but it's funny to think that Near & Aizawa & Ide somehow found a way to cheat death.

Every time I rewatch Death Note I'm like, surely I already love Aizawa enough, and every time when I'm done I find myself loving Aizawa more than before
I've made a post before about how Aizawa is the only Task Force team member who doesn't bow to L or Light or any of the "geniuses" just because they're geniuses, but I'd like to expand on that a bit. I think that, more than that, Aizawa is the only Death Note character who's shown to have autonomy
I'll elaborate. Of course they all have de factum autonomy and make their own choices; but most of them don't act like they do. Light has his whole martyr-god thing going on, "I'm the only one who can", etc. I think he might have said "I have no choice" more times than he said "new world". Even though he is objectively making his own choices, he acts like he is forced, either as a "sacrifice" he makes for a perfect world, or because it is "necessary" for him to protect himself. He hides behind his own ideals to shield himself from being seen as responsible for his own choices
L, as usual, isn't that much different from Light. Although he doesn't actually claim to not have a choice, he always acts as if everything he chooses is just a natural, logical consequence of the environment that would be foolish to not do, and not something that he chose out of many possibilities. A good example of that is when he says that they have to let Yotsuba kill their targets in order to advance in the case, and then Light finds a way to delay the murders while also getting more information. L says "you thought of it before I did", but the truth is that L wouldn't have ever thought of it, because he wasn't trying to. He made the choice to not look for alternatives. He made the choice to let them murder. He could have made another, like Light did. And yet, he doesn't ever act like he could look for alternatives other than the easiest advantageous path
Near talks about himself as if he's almost just an extension of L, and a lot of the reasoning for his choices is based on what L would have done or wanted. I cut him some slack because he's literally still a kid and was raised as if he was nothing but L's heir, but it's still true. Mello is in a similar state of mind, and although he doesn't make excuses for his choices or act as if they aren't choices, he is so obsessed with proving himself I don't think he's autonomous, psychologically speaking. That isn't to say that Mello isn't accountable for his choices (he is), but I can't really see him as an autonomous person when he doesn't even have a sense of self detached from others. He is always defined by others, especially Near and L
Misa and Mikami are also driven by obsession and build their identities around Light and Kira respectively, as does Takada to a certain extent. And the taskforce members all play along to whatever L (and later Light) tells them to with very little or no resistance
Except for Aizawa
Aizawa never lets anyone dictate his choices, or "goes with the flow", or makes excuses, or accepts anything as an inevitability
When he was against Light or L's plans, he said so. He never spoke to anyone as anything less or more than an equal, no matter their status, titles, or supposed intelligence. When he decided to not live at HQ and stay with his wife instead, he didn't blame it on his wife. Similarly, when his wife and child complained about his overworking, he didn't blame it on L or his boss. When faced with the possibility of having to quit the force, he tried every option he could think of. When he decided to leave the investigation, it was on his own terms for his own reasons, and he again showed that he is not willing to just accept whatever L says. Even then, he didn't accept that he couldn't investigate Kira anymore and actually created a whole separate secret investigation within the detectives. When Near told the task force to give them information, Aizawa chose to do so. And he kept choosing every step by himself, for his whole arc
Hell, he is the only character who is shown to be conflicted about his choices. That in itself I think is the biggest proof if his autonomy. No one else seems to be conflicted about what they do, they just do it. But Aizawa thinks over and agonizes and struggles, tries to keep his feelings in check and separate them from what he thinks is right or logical. Because he doesn't take any path for granted. He's aware that he's constantly choosing what actions to take, and he treats that as the responsibility that it is
And it's such a breath of fresh air! After so many uninterrupted hours of deeply obsessed characters acting as if they aren't autonomous, Aizawa shows up and thinks for himself, refusing to be defined by anyone else or hide behind any ideal. And he does it while also maintaining integrity of character, being consistent in his beliefs and challenging his own feelings and assumptions
And it's that autonomy that makes him an integral part of the plot by the end, because without it, he couldn't have chosen to help Near, and Near wouldn't have gotten some of his most crucial information. And I think his presence enriches the plot a lot because of that, not only because of that, but maybe especially because it shows that there is another possible frame of reference, even for a secondary character. A frame of reference that allows to thinking for yourself, even when your role is small. A frame of reference that acknowledges our responsibility for our choices, and how everything we do is a choice
And basically I could never love him enough

We need somebody to write a fic where Ide and Aizawa are like these hot greasers 😭😭 Matsuda should be the groupie 😭😭
stop absolutely 😭 if i had any motivation to write i would write this (maybe i will write this?) since i didn't know what type of greaser you were talking about (50s-60s american subculture or the outsiders kind), i did both!
(CHECK TAGS)
PERSONALITIES:
i've just done some research on greaser culture and this would actually suit aizawa perfectly according to my headcanons - did you tailor this post for me op?? in my mind, aizawa's half african-american - right? he probably grew up on the whole "you stick with your own, you are loyal to your own and you would do anything for your group" sort of mentality. this applies whether you are talking about the 50s-60s greaser variety OR the outsiders greaser variety - both of which are similar but not quite. i think it works either way.
to fit ide into this, he pretty much follows aizawa wherever he goes like a lost puppy and doesn't care much for people. when i think of ide's characterisation, i think solely of @zaney-hacknslash 's characterisation of him. if you read zaney's death note fics, even briefly (because they are very long, reading them is an all-day sort of event) you'll kind of see what i'm talking about. ide suits this greaser subculture very well, because he's loyal to his group (i.e. Aizawa) and doesn't care too much for the world outside of what is significant to him. he doesn't even care too much about his job.
AND YES YES GROUPIE MATSUDA >>>>
he just thinks they're real neat. aizawa and ide are cool, they're broke and they spend more time being a public nuisance at the cinema than doing anything else really but matsuda just thinks they're awesome.
to me, this could work platonically, romantically, sexually, or found family. this really is a great concept and i love it so so much.
POTENTIAL AUS:
groupie!Matsuda in the NPA, criminal greasers Aizawa&Ide: in this au, matsuda would keep getting any cases they may be involved in (perpetrator or not) and letting them slide. at first it's unintentional but as he interviews them more and more, he lets them get away with so much more than they deserve. aizawa and ide have no idea how 'luck' is on their side every fucking time but they're pretty grateful for it.
they also think that the smiley policeman who interviews them every time is actually pretty sweet - sweet enough to be protected by them, perhaps? matsuda's naivete is a significant part of his character in this au, as are the boys' lack of it. other criminals see him as a good target - but the boys aren't having any of it. matsuda is at first shocked, but then he just embraces it.
one day, aizawa and ide go to the station to pick up matsuda and take him to see a movie and soichiro is like "what are you thugs doing in these parts" then matsuda approaches and ide's just like "hey kid" and matsuda just grins and aizawa puts an arm around his shoulders. "we're seeing a movie!" matsuda grins, "thanks for letting me off early, chief!" and soichiro tries so many times to warn matsuda away from following and admiring the two but he ignores this every time.
in this same au, matsu is family-friends with the yagamis, he has been since he was a kid because their families got along. as matsu got older, they became more distant from his family but closer to him and he feels like they're on his side. but they keep warning him away from aizawa and ide, who are also on his side. why is that, he wonders?
high school au, outsiders au: aizawa and ide are kinda famous among the greasers, the same way bob was in the socs (the outsiders) and despite being a soc, matsu is really really attracted to them. obviously the age difference would be less in this au, and other characters would be sorted into greasers or socs. (e.g. light, matsuda, misa, takada and sayu are all socs. aizawa, ide, L, mikami, mello, matt & near are are all greasers.) things get complex realllll fast.

that's about it for now

So I made this comic.
Tumblr media
And then I made this one.
Tumblr media
I have others planned for the same alternate universe.
There's too many ideas and too little time to do all the comics I want to do since this is a very slow medium of storytelling.
So I thought, 'Screw it, guess I'm writing a fic now.'
The Summer Camp Ambush Simulation
The kanji on the wooden hyousatsu was too worn, weather-beaten, and altogether rotted out to be clear, but he could tell it used to read Sako.  The house itself had probably been a nice place in some distant past, a comfortable home where a thriving and happy family once resided.  Now, the windows were clouded with grime and mold, the front yard was overgrown with weeds, and the engawa-porch had warped into a terrain of its own.  As he stood before the front door, looking over the address he’d copied from his notes one last time, Aizawa was reluctant to imagine what state the interior was in.  With some disappointment at finding he was in the right place, he let out a tired sigh and rang the remarkably still intact doorbell.
A short conversation.  In and out.  No hassle.
From the other side of the door, a muffled voice immediately answered the bell with an exasperated shout.  “No, no, no!  There are far too many people here already!  I did not sign up for my home to become the halfway house for wayward youths!”
Aizawa frowned and took a strategic step back, bracing himself for possible aggression as a series of rapid footfalls grew louder and louder in their approach.
“Well, who’s here now——”  the voice continued, only to go dead silent when the front door was flung open, aside from a quiet,  “Oh.”
It was odd seeing Sako Atsuhiro without his mask.  He looked younger than he sounded and from the way he stared at him in bewilderment, Aizawa suddenly felt his visit had not been expected after all.  “Good evening,”  he said.  “I have a certain matter to discuss with Todoroki.  I was told to meet him here.”
...
Full chapter available in the link above.
If you want a read a fic where the Vanguard are a vigilante group participating in UA's summer camp by running a surprise attack simulation, plus extra, I gotchu.
I also try to write as much 'in character' as I can if that interests you. No hate to OOC, I just love the challenge of trying to keep true with canon personalities as much as the fan-plot allows.

My favorite part of the whole "Aizawa starts suspecting Light" subplot is like... Aizawa's integrity through it. It's really interesting to see
Because for every other person who suspected Light, the thing was, they were completely sure that Light was Kira. In L's case, he flat-out refused to entertain another option, and openly said so. Of course, they all were right, so gotta give credit to them there, but still, most of them were operating using "Light is Kira" as a premise, not a hypothesis. And even when it was treated as a hypothesis, it was one they were sure of
Aizawa is not sure
We are given a lot of insight into his internal thoughts; Aizawa is in turmoil. He keeps going back and forth between "could Light be Kira?", "I don't think Light is Kira", "I'm just not sure". He's in fact leaning more towards Light not being Kira in the beginning (although he admits this is partially because he doesn't want to believe it, and he keeps those feelings in check and acknowledges them), but he knows he can't be sure. And he could have chosen to refuse to believe it, like Matsuda and (earlier) Soichiro, but he doesn't want to do that. He wants to find out the truth even if it's uncomfortable for him
And Death Note could have made it so he's not particularly close to Light, or he's Completely Certain like all the other geniuses with self confidences the size of God, but instead he's just. A normal detective with a lead, who's following every possibility til the end. He's not looking for proof, he's looking for information, and he's doing his best to keep an open mind and follow the leads to where they really point, not where he thinks they should or wants them to
At the same time, he is complex and has his feelings involved but tries to neither let them in his way nor ignore their existence completely. Which is also very nice! He deals with them in a healthy, smart way so he can keep an open mind and get to the truth. And it's rare to see an investigator like this in most media, but particularly Death Note
We already knew that Aizawa made a point of always keeping his integrity from the way he interacted with L, Light, and later even Near; although he respects them as great thinkers, he refuses to just accept whatever they say as truth and thinks about it critically. He's willing to face them directly if he doesn't agree with them and doesn't put his moral beliefs aside at any point. Aizawa was always shown to be the guy who thinks for himself and refuses to treat anyone else as anything other than an equal, and it's nice to see this characterization remain and gain importance when he starts to suspect Light
He's essentially the only one acting like an investigator actually should, while still not losing his humanity for the sake of this plot, and I love him for it
TLDR Aizawa isn't sure that Light is Kira but he still does his best to investigate him even if it's hard
