I always say that I like L's death in the manga more, but I've never explained why. It's because it's quiet. You don't realise L's dying until he's actually dying. You see L stop talking mid-sentence, but it's not a weird behaviour coming for him. We see the ellipsis constantly, because he's thinking. You then see Mogi and Soichiro's confused faces, Soichiro asking what's wrong and in the bottom left L's hand trembling, but we already saw him shiver. It was when Ukita died and after Aizawa grabbed him. Or when Misa mentioned the Shinigami in the tapes. So, maybe he's shaking because he's scared or deeply affected by what's going on: Watari just died, the Shinigami disappeared, the Kira Case is getting to a critical point. It's normal to think that he's just trying to calm himself down. But then... He just falls to the side, while letting go of the spoon he was holding. You can't really say that’s usual for him. He fell off the chair once, but it was off screen. Now, even if it's a drawing, you can feel that he's going in slow motion, which means something is very wrong. Obviously, when you read, you can immediately see that bigger picture in which he falls and have a reaction, but going panel by panel, it's just so quiet. He's not going out in a big style or making a lot of noise. And this silent death symbolises to me how L – himself, not the detective – was during his time alive. So unimportant to anyone but Watari, that could've had an immediate reaction in case he had died in front of him. Just like those present had a reaction in that moment. But what if he died and no one was around him? He would've just perished. Alone. Nobody would've known. The world would've not realised that he is gone. And it didn't anyway. All the people he worked with. All the connections he made. None of them knows that L died. When I picture his death in my mind, I can’t help but imagine him being alone, because that's how I think he felt in that moment. He wasn’t actually very close to the task force. They were just people he worked with. Even if he felt some affection towards them, I don’t believe he thought they could feel the same. And they showed that they moved on pretty quickly. When I think about that moment, instead, I see him being on a stage, illuminated by the light, while all around him is dark, and you'd think that at least someone is watching in silence that heartbreaking moment. But once he falls, dies and the light turns off, you'd realise that there is actually nobody to react. No one actually cared about him without the detective persona attached.

realistically, if death note was set in 2023, we would have:
- reddit websleuths invading tokyo thinking that they can help L, but actually inconveniencing him because they would scare the shit out of him and would make him not leave the house at all for his own safety.
- 4chan trolls trying to convince some deranged individuals to kill people and blame kira for it, because they did it and nothing happened to them.
- tiktok users thirsting over kira because they have no fucking critical skills to understand that killing criminals = still killing.
- twitter having a moral debate over minors things that don't really matter months after they happened (because some information got leaked), like the FBI agents being sent to Japan, with some of them justifying their killings because they were working in another country that wasn't their own; also making threads trying to cancel Kira or L.
- facebook still trying to decide if Kira exists or if it's some massonic invention made by the new world order to control them.
- incels/alpha male podcasters dickriding kira because it encapsulates the "sigma male" mentality.
- instagram influences posting one image/story in support of L, and never talk about it ever again.

I sometimes get mad when I remember that Ohba doesn't know jack shit about his own characters, because whenever he's asked something about them, he always says, "oh I really don't know, I just wanted [insert superficial thing here]", but then I find solace in the fact that that means you can do absolutely anything with them. the only limit is the canon yourself, truly.

the more I think about it, the more I hate how L's death was handled in the anime. I love that Aizawa holds L's body too as well as Mogi, but they waited for Soichiro to come back from the hospital to let them know if L is actually dead, probably because they still had a slight hope that he might be still alive. They didn't leave him. They didn't sprint out of the room to go after Rem. They waited for a confirmation.

inspired by this @wammyhoe post
"Husband"
Mello -> I truly believe he likes the idea of getting married, especially exchanging vows. He might not like a big wedding, but a small intimate ceremony seems to be right up his alley, and he values words a lot, so hearing his other half promise to love him forever in a context like that would actually make him cry. And I think having to do the same, being so vulnerable in front of a bunch of people that might have never seen that part of him is a big, big thing.
"Boyfriend"
Matt -> I honestly think he likes hearing that word. It makes him sound cool and young. That doesn't mean he's not valuing the relationship enough to get married, because he thinks being a boyfriend is not only the highest of honours but also encompasses all the love he has for the other. "Husband" is just a title on paper that doesn't show more love, since he already loves with all his heart, soul and mind. I hope I'm making sense.
(Since I ship mellodramattic, I have to say that he's not against the idea of marriage and would marry Mello in heartbeat if asked, even though I believe he would be the one to propose because he knows how much it means to Mello. It's not a forced thing he has to put up with.)
[P.S. I headcanon Matt to be genderfluid, so girlfriend and partner would make him feel the same. Used he/him since most of the fandom does.]
Situationship (i actually have different interpretations of L loving someone, but this is the angst type, because this is the main one that plagues my brain)
L -> No "husband", no "boyfriend" He doesn't want labels attached to whatever he has with the other person. He knows what his shortcomings are in a relationship and knows that his job will get in the way eventually, even if they work together. He doesn't let himself believe that things can last forever, and doesn't want to burden the other person with a commitment, when he knows that someone might be more suitable. He can't command his heart and stop himself for feeling stuff, but he can control his actions, and while there might be some kissing and/or sex, that's it. I think he's the type to look at what he desires from afar, because that's the closest he can get to it. He's not the jealous type or anything like that, so he will let the person he loves live their life even if he's not in it or in the role he would like to be. He might even pushed them in that direction, as long as they are on good terms.
Other
Near -> he falls under "husband" to be honest, but the thing is there's no official "boyfriend" phase. It's like a implicit understanding between the two, but he never pops the question, "would you like to be my partner?". He straight up goes to "will you marry me?" (after enough time to be sure the other reciprocates, of course). And he's not for traditional weddings or rings or anything like that. So in practice, his interpretation of "husband" is similar to "boyfriend", but since it's "husband", there's more commitment in his mind. This makes sense to me.

not only i do not subscribe to the idea that Watari imposed L's role on the wammy’s residents (for different reasons) or that wammy’s was created just for L, but I also don't understand how that would work. Mello and Near are from the fourth generation (debatable but regardless, they don't seem to be from the second) and if they are the successors, it means that the people chosen from the prior generations either died or decided to back down. It's highly unlikely that everyone died, and if they decided to back down, that simply means that people can just do so, which goes against the most common headcanon in this fandom. I could accept that they all went into hiding, if only it weren't for the fact that Mello, Near and L are highly competitive individuals so there must be someone before Mello and Near that wanted to be L, especially because the way Wammy’s is structured leads to competitiveness. So what happened to those people, that at the time L dies are mostly adults? I think they would surely be the first choices, just because they are older. They don't even have to be individually the smartest people, because they can work together. I will always think that A and B's generation is also L's, so it would make sense that after A's death, the project was put on hold for a while, so nobody was actually chosen from the 2nd and 3rd generation (still debatable - do they actually exist or Mello’s came immediately after?). They probably weren't even introduced to the idea of a successor programme, so they had no idea of that, and only after, as L was getting more well known (and maybe even after B's attempt to ruin him or whatever he wanted to do) or when he started the Kira case, the successor programme was reinstalled. Still, no one is forcing anyone to be L. Near and Mello want to win, to be him. As Mello could just walk out of the Wammy’s, they could also say, fuck no, but they didn't. True that the Wammy’s could idolise L, but if we take as canon what he said to the kids and the fact that some began to dislike him, he doesn't want to be seen as an idiol and the kids are not brainwashed into thinking that.

their texting habits (for day to day chat)
L: he doesn't do this thing called "texting". if you send him something and he knows you'll meet him soon after, he'll wait to see you and reply to you in person. if you are not going to meet him that day or it's urgent, he'll call you.
Near: he uses emoticons frequently, like :), :3, :/ etc. (+ he thinks lol is a person with their arms up like an excited/happy cartoon character)
Mello: unironically uses a lot of "!?" and caps lock when angry.
Matt: this mother fucker is a walking typo, he speaks gibberish when texting.

I was thinking about the scene in which Aizawa grabs L's shoulder and then notices that he's shaking and clutching his leg. I don't think it's because he disliked his touch or because he invaded his personal space. If that were the case, he would've done something to get him off of him, but he didn't, and unless it's because he's Aizawa (🫶), I think he didn't attack him and get out of that supposedly uncomfortable situation because it wasn't that the reason he did that. he has his eyes covered/lowered during that part and asks Aizawa to be calm and not to do something that may kill him, but most importantly he says, "if you go there and lose your life too, Aizawa-san...", before it is shown to us that he's trembling. to me, this indicates that it's the idea of losing another of his allies that makes him feel that way. he was also shocked when he found out about the 12 FBI agents and considered it a personal loss. he met Ukita, he knew him personally but above all, he was the one to say that they needed to stop the boardcast and he didn't say anything to Ukita when he left. he let him go and he died. the only one to react when Ukita rushed out was Matsuda. so that makes me wonder if L thought to himself, "if I hadn't said that we needed to stop the broadcast, he wouldn't have gone out and got killed... No, if I had not underestimated Kira's power, I could've predicted it and stopped him". and so, ukita's death and the fact that he indirectly caused it + finding this new ability of Kira + the mere thought of him being unable to stop Aizawa from getting killed too made him react that way. he's not one to have emotional outbursts and emotions in a situation like that would be counterproductive, since Aizawa's the one who's being irrational, and having a similar approach would only fuel his desire to go out and do something, so that's why he had a calm tone of voice and was objective but that doesn't mean he wasn't emotionally affected by what was going on.

how do they paint their nails?
(man - in the canon - only)
L: as a child, Watari would paint his nails with those bitter or spicy tasting nail polishes so that he wouldn't bite them anymore, but he grew to actually enjoy the taste.
Near: he either uses pastel colours or metallic ones. he also uses stickers.
Mello: Yes, and he switches between black, dark red and golden.
Matt: this man goes wild with it, and it is horrendous. multiple colours, that don't even match together, a mess, just because he has not fucking idea what he's doing. He thinks it's fun, and that's all that matters.
Light: clear nail polish. he just needs them to shine in the light and show everyone that he's perfect even at the tip of his fingers.
Mikami: he takes great care of his nails, making sure they are perfect and that they are strong. However, he doesn't trust nail salons, so he learned how to do it on his own and he has his own professional kit.
Matsuda & Mogi: whatever Misa wants. the only difference between them, is that Matsuda starts painting his nails even when Misa is not around, while Mogi doesn't.
Rester: nail polish tester for Near and also helps Near to paint their nails, when he is in the mood for it but is doing something else.
