not only i do not subscribe to the idea that Watari imposed L's role on the wammy’s residents (for different reasons) or that wammy’s was created just for L, but I also don't understand how that would work. Mello and Near are from the fourth generation (debatable but regardless, they don't seem to be from the second) and if they are the successors, it means that the people chosen from the prior generations either died or decided to back down. It's highly unlikely that everyone died, and if they decided to back down, that simply means that people can just do so, which goes against the most common headcanon in this fandom. I could accept that they all went into hiding, if only it weren't for the fact that Mello, Near and L are highly competitive individuals so there must be someone before Mello and Near that wanted to be L, especially because the way Wammy’s is structured leads to competitiveness. So what happened to those people, that at the time L dies are mostly adults? I think they would surely be the first choices, just because they are older. They don't even have to be individually the smartest people, because they can work together. I will always think that A and B's generation is also L's, so it would make sense that after A's death, the project was put on hold for a while, so nobody was actually chosen from the 2nd and 3rd generation (still debatable - do they actually exist or Mello’s came immediately after?). They probably weren't even introduced to the idea of a successor programme, so they had no idea of that, and only after, as L was getting more well known (and maybe even after B's attempt to ruin him or whatever he wanted to do) or when he started the Kira case, the successor programme was reinstalled. Still, no one is forcing anyone to be L. Near and Mello want to win, to be him. As Mello could just walk out of the Wammy’s, they could also say, fuck no, but they didn't. True that the Wammy’s could idolise L, but if we take as canon what he said to the kids and the fact that some began to dislike him, he doesn't want to be seen as an idiol and the kids are not brainwashed into thinking that.

#whatever this is just me rambling #I could go on about how it's so obvious that Wammy’s has no classes about teaching people #to be detectives which I often see in fics #also. I know what Aizawa and Matsuda say after coming back from the Wammy’s #but I think it's just a very generalised view of the orphanage cuz if it's meant to create L's successors #where the hell are all those before Mello and Near? why didn't Roger tell them about L's death too? #because they simply are not there which means that wammy’s is not a L's factory #unless as I said. they all died or went into hiding. which both are highly unlikely #I know it's just ohba's poor writing here but you know. -i feel like near had been there the longest compared to matt and mello. near probably couldn’t remember a time where he didn’t live there

-near was the only one who was explicitly introduced to L, but it only happened once. additionally, i feel like L would visit the orphanage from time to time but would simply go by ryuzaki and roger would get him to speak with all the kids

-i feel like it goes without saying that mello would of stolen so much chocolate. matt would always try and take the blame but they’d never believe that it was him as mello was a little bit of a troublemaker

-matt would never get caught with things like cigarettes but mello would be caught stealing from the kitchen all the time and it would annoy him so much

-matt and mello would always sneak out and go to random places at night just to hang out. they probably liked the thrill of it a little but also the fact that they’d just be alone in the night

-matt definitely used to trim mello’s hair for him and mello would help matt dye his all sorts of random colours. mello also probably tried to pierce matt’s ears and failed miserably

-mello would always do random shit to piss off near and matt would try to stop him. however it ended up annoying mello much more every time because near would not care at all whatsoever

-everyone was kind of scared/intimidated by mello apart from matt and near

-mello asked to try a cigarette once and almost choked to death. he proceeded to yell at matt for laughing

-mello also got high once with matt and had to hide it from roger. matt was super chill but mello was probably twitching and hearing colours

-i feel like matt wouldn’t of stayed long after mello left, he would of been really sad without him. a couple months later he left and tracked him down and they’d ended up moving in together (boyfriends? or not? we shall never find out…)

I know we don’t know ANYTHING about A but I like to imagine that they were a fine artist. I think all of the children at Wammy’s House were definitely gifted but there are different KINDS of gifted and I need an artistically or musically inclined successor NOW.

And maybe that successor was none other than A. L’s very first next-in-line would meditate on facts given to them while busying their hands with painting or sculpting or whatever else they may have dabbled in. Personally, I think the subjects within their art would probably be pretty objective, especially if it was a thing they worked on while their mind was occupied with something else. HOWEVER, it could also be something more stylized and bold. I wouldn’t know, we never met A.

Regardless, it was abundantly clear that they were artistically gifted from a young age and at Wammy’s House it was approached in a “sticking your art to the fridge with magnets because we’re proud of you” kind of way. A’s art was admired and revered and, when they died, their paintings remained framed on the walls of the orphanage. Some feel a chill up their spine when looking at them.

How do you think female wammy's boys would turn out?

Thank you for the ask! It’s certainly an interesting question.

I honestly don’t think their personalities would be much different - granted, based on the way the other female characters in Death Note are written, there’s a good chance they’d be adapted to have more stereotypical traits and interests (e.g. Near playing with barbies instead of cars/puzzles/lego).

The main difference I can think of is the way they’d be viewed by others. For example, Light would be more likely to underestimate L if he was a woman, which could work in L’s favour depending on how much Light’s misogyny clouds his rational thinking.

Because of the general infantilisation of women, I could see the government and/or members of the SPK questioning Near’s adequacy when they see what he looks like. In the show, it’s obvious people doubt him based on his appearance, but it wouldn’t surprise me if this became a bigger issue for a female version of Near.

Mello would have a harder time getting into the mafia because he’d be perceived as weak and useless. He probably would have faced a greater risk of being hurt/taken advantage of after leaving the orphanage and when getting involved in organised crime. I could even see him pretending to be a guy just so people would take him seriously (although I’d rather see him succeed without having to resort to that, because I don’t generally like the idea that someone NEEDS to be a man/become more like a man to be successful).

This is also a pretty minor addition, but I imagine there’d be at least one instance of someone commenting on L’s weight based on what he eats - possibly Mello or Matt’s too.

In general, I still think the core of their characters would stay the same - L would be a highly intelligent recluse with insane skills and influence; Mello would be impulsive and ambitious and desperate to become number one; Near would be a calm and generally emotionless genius with zero life skills but impressive deductive abilities; and Matt would be Mello’s lazy, perpetually bored sidekick.
