Thinking abt the air nomads:
What if, after the war, once the dust has settled a little, Aang goes back to travelling, hoping that maybe he can find at least some trace of surviving airbenders. As an added bonus, he gets to do more of the exploring and wandering that he had to put on hold.
Toph goes with him ofc. She only just got a taste of real freedom and it was overshadowed by ever-present impending doom. While she's on speaking terms with her parents, she isnt quite ready to be back under their roof on a permanent basis. The rest of the gaang have their individual homes and responsibilities that they get back to, though they join for the odd field trip or adventure when they can.
So anyway, they're touring all over the world and over the years they notice just how displaced so many people have become. EK citizens who barely escaped the blaze but lost everything; FN military now decommissioned with no idea how to carry on; people looking for a new start in the hard-won peace. Maybe it starts with Toph heading back to Earth Rumble, where a group of young runaways scrounge for cheap fights to make a little money.
At each turn they find more and more people with no homes to return to and no family to protect them; runaways escaping the roles the war forced them into. Gradually, Aang and Toph start to see that they aren't so different from themselves. They just want a new start.
So they decide to give them one. They clean up the temples and set up villages in the surrounding areas (helps to be master earthbenders), where people can arrive and stay as long as they need. Travellers and refugees pass through in droves, sometimes choosing to stay and rebuild their lives there, sometimes continuing in their wandering with a guarantee that they'll always have a place to return to should they have the need.
Over time, the lemurs grow in number and even some flying bison calfs (hybrids with a relative species maybe?), can be seen in the skies. Whenever the founders visit, it isn't the same but Aang feels a little more at home.
The first time someone asks Aang to teach him his philosophies, and expresses his desire to become a monk, how can he refuse? Maybe it's a former soldier, somebody who's done terrible things, looking for a path to redemption. So Aang teaches him, and then he teaches others. And though they may not be airbenders, they are as earnest and faithful as any nun or monk Aang knew before. The temples become filled with new faces: Firebenders, Earthbenders, Waterbenders and non-benders all wearing Air nomad orange and yellow.
Aang always feared that it would be his responsibility to have airbender children, and the idea of forcing that on someone he loved terrified him. Maybe that's why he waited so long before acting on his feelings for his best friend, his travelling companion, his fellow-village builder and temple-restorer. How could they have a truly happy relationship with this pressure hanging over them? He wishes he could be content with the new way of things that he and his friends have created. But he knows that he can't be the last airbender forever...
Nobody knows why some children can bend the elements and others can't. Is it blood? Is it blessing? Is it the land in which you're born? Or is it the simple allocation of fates decided by the values and norms you're raised believing in? Is it enough to be surrounded by the culture and beliefs of the Air Nomads? Nobody knows...
All they know is that nobody sees it coming when the six-year-old daughter of two non-bender villagers from the Earth Kingdom and Northern Water Tribe sends herself flying twelve feet into the air with a sneeze.

Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)
My Favorite Ships:
• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3
• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!
• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3
• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3
• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!
Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:
• Zutara - A pretty good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do occasionally seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer seeing/writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!
• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!
• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭
• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3
• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.
• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.
Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):
• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!
• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!
• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!
• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!
• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!
• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.
• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.
• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!
(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)
• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.
Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!
• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3
• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!
• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!
• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!
• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!
• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.
• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!
• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024
• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?
• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TedTalk. If you made it to the end, you get a big platonic kiss on the forehead MWAH!

Hi! Do you have any atla fic recs?
Here are the seventeen best fics in the Avatar fandom, and I swear this list is totally not just the favorites of one person whose choices are completely subjective and entirely based on personal preference. Yeah so these are my personal faves, your milage may vary.
"Who by Fire" by Kaberett: [Link]
There was precedent, of course, for succession in the event of the untimely demise of the incumbent ruler. Between political intrigue, ambition and necessity - and these qualities have never been in short supply within the ruling classes of the Fire Nation - history contains no shortage of examples. Deposal in the absence of bloodshed, however, is another matter entirely: and more so when the Heir Apparent is the banished prince, who has, contrary to every expectation, found the Avatar and brought him home.
"Enslaved" by Sharkflip: [Link]
A triumphant war party returns with an exotic slave, a gift for the ruling house. Multi-chapter, Katara/Zuko
"Eight Principles of Yong" by Psocoptera: [Link]
The pen is mightier than the sword, or how Zuko saves the day via the power of good penmanship.
"Five Ways Toph Created Her Own Family (Whether She Liked It or Not)" by Lady Ganesh [Link]
The title is the summary.
"Tea with Destiny" by @awesomeavocadolove [Link]
After the shock of Lu Ten's death, Iroh makes a fateful journey into the Spirit World. The tea there is exquisite, but the company may give Iroh a run for his money.
"Without a Fight" and "Never Give Up" by @suzukiblu [Link] and [Link]
Thirteen years old and alone in the Earth Kingdom, thrown out of his life and family and destiny with the burn on his face still raw and new, Zuko does not want to go on. Song/Zuko
"Gilded Green" by @caelum-blue [Link]
At the end of Iroh's Siege, the Dai Li decide to test their brainwashing abilities on a Fire Nation soldier. They don't know that their guinea pig-rat happens to be a supposedly-dead prince. Multi-chapter and multi-part
"Til Death Do Us Start" by @loopy777 [Link]
Mai's parents arrange a marriage for her. The first problem is that she's been dead for fifteen years, and the second problem is that her husband isn't who anyone is expecting. Mai/Sokka
"The Airbending Master" by @liz-squids [Link]
Teaching airbenders is not the same as restoring the Air Nomads
"In Which Mai and Toph Are Not Remotely Ladylike" by @liz-squids [Link]
Mai and Toph drink too much, talk too much, engage in petty vandalism. Their mothers would be horrified.
"Drink Some Fucking Tea" by @unjapanologist [Link]
A parody of 'Go the Fuck to Sleep'. During season one, Iroh unloads some frustrations about his beloved nephew that he can't very well voice out loud.
"Red is the Color of the End of the World" by @sholiofic [Link]
Post-series, Katara is adjusting to the new shape of the world. They all are.
"Chromatism" by @glamaphonic [Link]
Ty Lee is soiled and unclean and bursting with color.
"Life Began With Waking Up" by @glamaphonic [Link]
It was a simple truth that Mai had never really thought about her children. Mai/Zuko
"His and Her Circumstances" by Lavanya Six: [Link]
AU. Two years ago, it's believed the Fire Lord exiled Prince Zuko to distance himself from responsibility for his son's subsequent assassination. Five months from now, a boy in an iceberg will awaken. Tonight, Mai runs across a masked criminal. Mai/Zuko
"Escapee" by @liz-squids [Link]
So you're a traitor. Now what? AU from "The Boiling Rock" where Mai and Ty Lee escape with the others. Mai/Zuko
Unnamed ficlet #4 by @liz-squids [Link]
The AU where Azula never found out Zuko and Iroh were in Ba Sing Se, and 16 years later, the Fire Nation has won the war, and Mai is the governor of Ba Sing Se, and she and Zuko have an awkward 30-something reunion. Mai/Zuko, past Jin/Zuko.

I'll send more for the ships ask! How I met your mother, and Atla 🙃
aaah thank you dearest!!
How I Met Your Mother (which I still haven't finished but never mind)
OTP: Barney/Robin, my beloveds <3 They have excellent chemistry, actually get along, respect each other, and they way the writers tried to claim they didn't work the first time was bullshit. I know they won't end up together but they deserve to be happy
Favourite canon pairing: Barney! And! Robin!
Worst pairing ever: Robin/Ted. They don't work!! I respect them for trying, but they found out really quickly that their life goals don't align and they simply Do Not Work as a couple, which is fine!! But also. Stop pushing them together. Please. I'm begging
Guilty pleasure pairing: Honestly I think Robin/Lily would be a VERY fun dynamic to explore (and Lily clearly agrees with me)
A pairing you want to see more: I'm sure I'll have an answer for this when I've finished the show, but I've been judging this one based on the fandom which,,, I am not yet a part of
That pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: Haven't spent any time in fandom yet (because I haven't finished the show) but from the writing I have to assume Marshall/Lily is popular and. I do not like it. I love Lily, and I think she deserves so much better than him (could go on a whole rant about that but we'll save that for another post)
Favourite non-romantic pair: Barney and Lily! When they were living together?? Absolute bestfriend vibes, I love it and I wish the writers gave us that dynamic more instead the other Barney and Lily dynamic where she hates him (serious) instead of she hates him (friendship bullying)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
(I am just focusing on AtLA, not including LoK because then I would have SUCH a hard time deciding)
OTP: oh absolutely Katara/Zuko. I think they had SUCH a fascinating dynamic and I would have loved to see the slow burn as they eventually begin to rebuild trust and friendship slowly turns into love. They had better chemistry and Katara and Aang worked better as friends I said what I said
Favourite canon pairing: Hmmmm probably Sokka/Suki, they're so cute and he's such a wifeguy even when they have literally only just started dating. Them <3
Worst pairing ever: Okay, so it's not the worst pairing ever but........ Katara/Aang. Personally, I just never felt like Katara actually reciprocated his feelings, and it really just came across like the writers just decided on them being endgame early on, and then backed themselves into the corner of We Have To Commit To It, No Matter What. I never really got a romantic vibe from her end, and just really would have much preferred it to not go in that direction
Guilty pleasure pairing: Ty-Lee/Azula. I am a sucker for sunshine/grumpy, especially if it involves the absolute betrayal of Ty-Lee siding with Mai??? I eat that shit UP
A pairing you want to see more: Okay this is absolutely just me being a lesbian but Katara/Azula could have made a BOMBASS power couple. Like,, imagine??? If Azula had gotten the redemption arc she deserved in the show, just imagine how unstoppable they would have been
That pairing everyone likes but you’re like “lol no”: Okay okay don't come for me, I'm not like, violently opposed or anything but I just,,, personally don't see the romantic aspect to Zuko/Sokka. I love their dynamic and ship what you wanna ship!! But I like them better as friends
Favourite non-romantic pair: oooh gotta be Toph & Katara. They're my GIRLS and I love how they slowly develop a friendship despite being two very different people
Send me a fandom and I'll answer these questions!

003 for Ty Lee! I don't know if I've noticed you say anything about her and I'm immensely curious to hear your thoughts <3
i adore ty lee, so thank you for giving me a chance to talk about her!
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: i love her. i love that she appears really shallow and ditzy, but is actually extremely shrewd and insightful. i love that she's girly and sweet and ultra feminine, but also an absolute badass. and i absolutely LOVE her character arc. ty lee betraying azula for mai ranks in one of my top favourite moments of the show for sure.
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: mailee my beloved.
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: ty lee and katara! katara would probably enjoy having a more feminine girl friend around, and i think she would come to rely on ty lee a great deal in the fire nation. i'd love to see katara learn chi blocking, and merge it with bloodbending somehow for healing.
My unpopular opinion about this character: i don't think ty lee and azula would have made a good ship in canon. i completely get why people ship them, and i like them in fanon, but in the show? no. their dynamic is extremely toxic and abusive, and even if azula had gone through a redemption arc, i don't think the scars of that relationship would ever have completely gone away for ty lee.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: AIRBENDER TY LEE. WE WERE ROBBED, I TELL YOU.
Favorite friendship for this character: since i've already said ty lee and katara, i'll go with ty lee and aang for this one! they have such similar vibes that they would most definitely get along great and aang could have helped her discover she was an airbender cough cough
My crossover ship: hmm... maybe ty lee and luna lovegood from harry potter? they both have those sort of airy, whimsical personalities that people overlook at first glance, but they're also incredibly wise and have a lot of depth to them. i'm here for ty luna.

Zukka BBC's Merlin au
Ozai is Uther pengragon who's goal is to wipe out magic from the land.
Zuko is Arthur, prince who cares for the wellbeing of his people and frequently clashes with his father's opinions, but still wants his approval.
Sokka as Merlin, travelled from a different land to work at the castle, having to hide his magic as he works for Piandao (Giaus), and the homoerotic subtext between him and Zuko is as strong as the show. Cocky, grumpy, befriends everyone, smartest person in the show? Definitely Sokka.
Mai as Gwen? This one I'm less sure of, but Gwen and Arthur have a romance and I love Firelady Mai.
Azula as Morgana, witch who loses herself and wants to fight Ozai only after being excluded. Definitely wants to fight Zuko. She gets her own Dragon and gets ostracised by people she once loved.

what do you think the gaang/fire nations kids’ respective playground activities were in elementary school?
well obviously not all of them attended elementary school (toph was homeschooled; it seems like zuko was too?? but maybe he did go to school like azula but he simply had no friends) so im kinda just gonna base this off what kids did in my elementary school for those of them who had a less than ideal upbringing
obviously aang was playing, the center of attention as he showed the other kids his advanced airbending tricks his marbles or his air scooter, flying around on his glider, flying around on his bison, running around the temple, eating fruits straight from the trees, laughing, loving his friends and being beloved by them in return.
katara was playing little team sports like 3 on 3 soccer or dodgeball or kickball, jump rope, hopscotch, snowball fighting, freeze tag, penguin sledding, red rover red rover you have to come over, playing make believe that she was a dreaded pirate king, or a daring and valiant knight, or a mom in a family (for some reason to little girls these are all interchangeable???), gossiping about the cool older boys, and you know, trying not to show off her waterbending in front of the other kids because her mom said it was dangerous even though she doesn’t really get why...
when sokka wasn’t trying to convince the other kids to play pai sho with him despite its reputation for being a boring game for old people, practicing with his boomerang and other weapons, or simply just joining katara in whatever game she felt like playing, he was trying to prove to the older boys that he was basically grown like them and trying to get them to take him hunting, reading books that were way too mature for his age before they got confiscated by kanna “for his own good,” or finding the nearest adult and asking them really specific, intelligent questions that they absolutely did not have the answers to.
toph would have loved the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of kids her age, even though she also would have quickly realized that she is far smarter and wiser than these simple children. she would learn this fact by telling them a story that is obviously made up, with no intention to obfuscate the fact that she was making it up on the spot, only for all the kids to lap it up fully believing that this actually happened to her no questions asked. at which point she would marvel at the stupidity of her peers—nay, the human race.
zuko was the type of kid who liked to pretend he was a cat or a dragon (one of those) and run around in his own little world on all fours meowing and snarling and hissing at people, blissfully unaware that all the other kids thought he was an absolute freak.
suki was leading the other kids on expeditions across the island, running through the woods, climbing trees and picking fruit, tackle fighting them in the dirt, pretending to be a kyoshi warrior, pretending to be avatar kyoshi herself, stealing freshly baked pies off of windowsills, denying the pie stealing allegations with crumbs around her mouth, apologizing to her neighbors for stealing their delicious pies, etc.
ty lee was always the center of attention, dazzling the other girls with her perfect cartwheels and backflips and other gymnastics and acrobatics, or entertaining everyone with fanciful little stories, or telling girls which boys totally had crushes on them, or having a queue around the block as she told everyone one by one what their fortunes would be (she was totally bullshitting them but they ate it up), or sometimes simply running around in her own little world only half aware that everyone was following her with their eyes as her braid swung around her shoulders and she laughed.
mai would sit quietly in the corner and simply observe, a book in her lap, trying to avoid making conversation with any of the other kids, or worse yet, being roped into one of their games, the ultimate torture.
azula didn’t like watching ty lee show off to her adoring audience or sitting in the corner with mai in silence, and since those were her only two friends, her other option was simply to demand that she be given more work during recess hours. while the other kids may be happy playing like simpleminded fools, she was not like them, she was smarter and more gifted, and therefore would benefit from using her extra time to advance far beyond them, surpass her peers in every way, simply because she could, and thus she ought to.
bonus: jet liked using his recess hours to try to convince the other kids that it was obviously in their best interest to escape the tyranny of adults who tried to force them into being brainwashed by such hideous forms of groupthink as “reading” “writing” and “arithmetic” by running away into the woods to start a kids’ only cult commune in the trees. at which points his parents would get complaints from the other parents that jet was being a bad influence on their kid, and they’d be like “oh my god jet your teachers arent the thought police please just do your homework”

So, I wanted to know if any Azula stan is actually looking forward to the Avatar live action remake. A relatively unknown actress, Elizabeth Yu, has just been cast as Azula. I wish her well, even if I still don't know if I want to watch this. Knowing how Azula is going to be mistreated by the comics, do I really want to go through with this again? How can I watch that Agni Kai knowing that these asshole writers will never allow Azula to heal from it. This show isn't fixing anything. As I understand, they aren't making any meaningful changes, not even to the depressing heteronormativity of 2005. I could maybe see watching the show if Azula's actress does a really great job in the role - I hope she does. I would watch if Azula was confirmed as either gay or bi. It would have to be through Ty Lee, because as much as Azutara is the OTP for me, it couldn't happen in the show. Any sort of Azutara bond could develop only post-show, but of course, the writers wanted to force Azula in a shallow villain role, and Katara into hating her, doing disservice to both characters. Let me know if I'm wrong about this and am totally not getting some important reason to watch this. Or alternatively, reaffirm my feelings about this <3.
Also, uh... looking at that picture in the link with all the actors. I'm not trying to be mean or insinuate something, but. Well, I'll just say that Kataang works even less for me, and it didn't work before. Please don't throw rocks.

If you could rewrite legend of korra and make it your own(or just in general better) how would you do it? The villains would stay the same and korra and crew are the same(personalities you can definitely tweak a bit. I would definitely not have any love triangles and make korra and asami happen in the beginning) how would you do it with your ships being canon as well?
Okay so I’ve never actually watched LOK. I’ve heard A LOT about it through watching countless video essays on Youtube and reading Tumblr posts about it. I know the who, the what and the how, I just haven’t wanted to watch it because, even though it looks cinematically gorgeous, the story was written by Bry/ke and there’s a LOT of it, worldbuilding and storywise, that I just can’t bare to watch.
So here goes. This got long. Enjoy!
1) Remove the Decopunk world.
A Decopunk world is a world where technology is 1920s-ish, but very advanced. We have cars, tanks, radio, bobs and faux bobs, cloche hats, short skirts, nice suits, etc. I adore Decopunk. The 1920s are one of my favourite eras. An optimistic way of looking at the world, partying, illegal alcohol, the remnants of the Great War... I love it. I really do. But it doesn’t work in the pre-established world of Avatar. It brings elements that are far too imperialistic and colonial in nature (which prompted the comics to be imperialistic and colonial in nature, with the Northern and Southern Water Tribe, you can find many posts about that), which came along hand in hand with the Industrial Revolution, as this article puts it so well. Please read it, it’s awesome.
Why did they feel they had to denature Avatar’s world? They already had everything they could possibly want.
The Fire Nation could be more Steampunk, which is a little less advanced than Decopunk (First Industrial Revolution vs Second Industrial Revolution) because there were elements of Steampunk in the Fire Nation Army (such as the tanks, the navy and the dirigibles). But it could be for them only. It could show us how Zuko transformed the Fire Nation from a war industry to a steam-powered country. This could be the new way to channel firebending (and please, no more “anyone can do lightning bending”, you don’t need lightning bending to get electricity and it makes  Zuko, Iroh, Ozai and Azula weak in the show!).
We’ve seen waterbending used in clever ways in the Northern Water Tribe. How could Katara’s waterbending and Sokka’s engineering influence the Southern Water Tribe to make them use waterbending more? Canals, waterfalls, waterways, etc.? In new and different ways? Could the Southern Water Tribe use hydroelectricity, but in a clean, sustainable way? Why does the Southern Water Tribe port look so... mundane?
The Earth Kingdom already had a working train system in Ba Sing Se. And the postal system in Omashu. Toph could have taught earthbenders how to follow the Badgermoles way and dug tunnels throughout a nation in peace. Then boom. Subways. But instead of machines pushing the people along, you can have benders do it. Instead of messenger hawks, the postal system could run through the entire kingdom instead of just Omashu and be much more efficient. The Earth Kingdom could be praised for its fast postal system that could, maybe, work as telegrams.
I’ll come back to the Air Nomads.
Those are just examples from the top of my head. I don’t mean “never allow technology to “””progress””” (I use that word veeeeery loosely because it has huge imperialistic undertones). I mean instead of trashing the fun parts of bending to make way for Decopunk technology that doesn’t need bending, work with it! Get creative! This worldbuilding feels... too easy. When Avatar: The Last Airbender was praised for its worldbuilding.
I adore Decopunk. I enjoy it far more than Dieselpunk and it’s much less known that Steampunk. But it has no place in the Avatar world.
2) That doesn’t mean “remove Republic City”.
First of all, it should honestly have a better name. It’s kind of like naming a city “Democracy City”. Which is way too on the nose. Harmony City sounds better, and that’s the first thing that came to mind. Anyway.
I really like the idea of a city being built in the spirit of Iroh and the White Lotus. To allow the Four Nations to live together in harmony in one city. But why is Republic City literally New York City with an “““Asian””” flair? What is up with that? I know New York is the MOST Decopunk city ever (you can’t encounter anything Decopunk without seeing New York, with its Art Deco buildings, the Harlem Renaissance, the Prohibition, etc.). But they do NOTHING with it! They just take New York, change some names, add some Asian flair, and call it a day.
I don’t want 1920s New York for Republic City. I want Zootopia.
What happens in a city where all the Four Nations are represented? How does Water, Earth, Fire and Air work together? Big cities tend to be quartered in neighborhoods, so each neighborhood could be a smaller version of their nation. We could have a Northern Water Tribe next to an Earth Kingdom next to... you know what I mean? Each neighborhood could be a small-scale introduction to the nation for Korra first, then you can send her to that nation afterwards!
Which leads us to this.
3) Have Korra follow a traditional Avatar’s journey.
I really don’t know why they decided that Korra would learn three elements before the age of sixteen (when that’s the age Avatars usually START their journeys) and then only have her learn Airbending during the entire show. Wasn’t the structure of each Book being about Aang learning one element at a time a good structure? Why go out of their way to NOT do that? Why was it the White Lotus’ prerogative to train the Avatar in the first place, too?
So let’s have Korra know waterbending first (and show Katara teaching her, please!), then she can learn Earth, Fire and Air. By going to the Earth Kingdom, to the Fire Nation, and to the Air Temples. This could help develop each nation and show us how they have grown through the years. And it could lead Korra and the audience to figure out that there’s not only Aang who has had children to represent the Air Nomads, but there were other Air Nomads who survived the genocide and we can actually see the Air Nomads as a thriving culture.
So about Republic City. As I said, we could keep it. But now that Korra is going on a traditional Avatar journey, you could have, say, one episode at the beginning and one episode at the end of each season taking place in Republic City. To show us how each Nation’s neighborhood works and as an introduction to Korra before she actually takes the plunge to travel to that nation.
Please! Build upon the Avatar world at large more! Come on!
4) Stop it with the love triangles.
Many have talked about the Mako, Korra, Bolin and Asami love triangles. I’ve read once that they don’t exactly feel like friends, they’re only colleagues who share the fact they all dated Korra at one point. Which is sad. Knowing that the Gaang is so beloved because they’re such GOOD FRIENDS first!
So work to build strong, healthy friendships first, THEN start thinking about romance if you have to. And please, if you want a ship to be endgame, don’t have it so you have to confirm it on Twitter.
Don’t.
Oh! And also. Bolin and Eska’s relationship was unhealthy as all hell and treated as “funny” and “comic relief” because a woman was being emotionally abusive to a man. That’s terrible. Please don’t do that.
5) Don’t let Katara fall to the side like she did.
Many, MANY before me have talked about how Katara got the short end of the stick in LOK. Where’s her statue? Where’s her recognition as the Greatest Waterbender in the World? Why is she day in and day out in the healing hut, when she said “I don’t want to heal, I want to FIGHT”? Does she even have a waterbending school? Or is that completely fanon? Why does she allow Aang to take one of their children on life-changing field trips while leaving their other kids behind? Aren’t they also Air Nomads by birth??
It’s okay to worship the old Gaang because, well, we all love them! I do love Aang, even if I give him a hard time a lot, but I love the character. I just don’t like the way Book 3 Aang was written. But some characters shouldn’t have everything while others have nothing. Aang is LITERALLY THE STATUE OF LIBERTY. But where was Katara’s statue? And also, what happened to Suki?? What happened to Mai or Ty Lee, too?? Or even Sokka?? He died some time ago and... that’s it??
Which brings us to this.
6) Zutara, Taang, Sukka and Mailee.
I’ve seen that picture of Toph, Aang, Sokka and Katara being edited with Zuko and Katara next to each other, Toph and Aang next to each other, and a (suddenly alive!) Suki next to Sokka. I think that’s so good! It feels so healthy!
Not all relationships that started when people were kids work out. Sokka and Suki seem the strongest relationship at the end of the show and they’re probably the only ones I could see working out in the end. Sokka could become the Southern Water Tribe Chief and Suki could become his Queen when she’s retired from the Kyoshi Warriors.
Katara and Aang would be lifelong friends, of course they would be, but I don’t really see them lasting. Aang was twelve when they started dating. They’d date a few years, then they’d decide they want other things. That’s a good thing to show kids!
I’ve written many metas about Zutara, but Ambassador then Fire Lady Katara would show a changing world, where the Fire Nation, now no longer a war industry but a Steampunk country, is moving forward, with Zuko literally marrying a woman the Fire Nation tried to wipe out. They would be equals and leave an equal mark upon the world. Together.
Toph and Aang would be amazing together. They’d be a great team, working in the Earth Kindom, helping rebuild the old Temples when the Air Nomads came out of hiding, and bringing peace around the world. I don’t think they’d be a conventional relationship. They’d do their own thing for a while, find each other for a while, work together on some projects, then continue doing their own thing. Aang being the Avatar who travels the world and Toph teaching metalbenders and working with the King in Ba Sing Se and Bumi in Omashu and wherever she’s needed. I think Toph would be much more fulfilled than what we’ve seen of elderly Katara. She doesn’t have Katara’s abandonment issues (I’ve talked about them here) and she’s more independent, I believe.
I know I haven’t talked about them much yet, but I want Mai and Ty Lee together in the end. Badass ladies challenging their respective stereotypes and create a new world for themselves. Mai could find herself away from the Fire Nation court (I don’t know what she’d do, but circuses love people who throw knives, don’t they? She could be a circus performer for a while), and I think Ty Lee, in this version, could work at the circus and with Aang to rebuild the Air Nomads. I love the idea of Ty Lee being a descendant of the Air Nomads.
All of them should be shown creating Zootopia-like Republic City. Because of course they should be! They’re the Gaang!
So yeah, that’s how I would see the world of Avatar grow beyond the borders of the original show! :)

Headcanons for avatar!Mai and maiko?
that’s really interesting au and i have some thoughts (another long-long post, yes), but before that here are a few remarks:
the spiritual collapse happened after avatar’s roku death and the new avatar should’ve been born in the fire nation again.
iroh vanished (ran away) after azulon’s death.
ozai didn’t banish zuko after the agni kai.
so, here is my avatar!mai au:
after avatar roku’s death, fire lord sozin commanded fire sages to check every newborn child in the entire fire nation. if a child was a firebender they took them away from their parents and held them in captivity until their 16th birthday. if a child was a non-bender, they returned them to their parents.
all fire lords through 100 years were continuing sozin’s rules, trying to reveal and capture the new avatar. guards broke into houses and took away children cruelly; pleading cries and screams from terrified parents sounded everywhere. scared people prayed to agni to send them non-bender children (that was sligtly borrowed from the story about moses and pharaoh, i just listened to music from “the prince of egypt” recently).
mai was born weak and premature, fire sages said that she had no spark, and michi with ukano were relieved. besides, to that day everyone already thought that the circle of avatars is gone forever.
mai discovered that she could firebend at the age of six, the scared little girl ‘who shouldn’t make any problems’ kept her secret tightly and didn’t say anything about her bending even to her parents.
she met princess azula and ty lee at the age of seven, that year she also met prince zuko.
she secretly was watching zuko’s and azula’s training. mai had been running to the outside of the caldera and, hiding between high rocks, she tried to repeat their firebending moves.
sometimes little mai had seen in her dreams the tall white-beard man, but she didn’t understand what it all meant.
first time mai entered the avatar state at age of twelve after zuko’s agni kai. zuko was everything for mai – her friend and her beloved. she cried silently in her bedroom unable to unsee how fire lord burns his own son’s face, and that happened.
sages in all four nations saw the light in their temples and announced that the avatar had finally returned.
the next two years angry miscalculated fire lord ozai ordered to test and even torture every firebender they hold in captivity. meanwhile, mai’s family went to omashu.
avatar roku appeared in mai’s dream almost every night, reminding that it is her duty to stop the fire lord and bring balance to the world. terrified mai replied to him that she never asked for that. she had been wearing her mask of nonchalance and cold daily, although everything inside her squirms from the fear.
she returned to the fire nation at the age of fifteen, and was met by ‘dishonored’ zuko who’s only desire was to capture the avatar and restore his honor.
mai tiredly confessed to him that she’s the avatar.
zuko didn’t believe her at first, even scowled because she’s ‘mocking’ him. mai created the fire and zuko was terrified. he couldn’t believe in it.
he begged her to surrender to his father and mai, angered by his ‘betrayal’, turned into the avatar state again, pushing him away by her uncontrolled airbending.
all next day mai was planning her escape, afraid that zuko would betray her this time for real.
he intercepted her right before her leaving and whispered that he wanted to help her to restore balance and bring peace. his father was doing horrible things, now zuko understood. mai only nodded, and then, for hers and zuko’s surprise, she hugged him tightly.
after long preparations they succeeded to release the last dragon, chained in the undergrounds of the royal palace (that is the reference to the show “merlin”).
zuko and mai flew away on druk from the fire nation. furious ozai sent azula to catch them.
after long weeks of helpless searching and hiding from azula, mai and zuko found ty lee. ty lee joined them happily.
after visiting every ruined town and devastated village, after seeing wounded, broken, helpless people, desperation and guilt were growing in mai more with every day. she couldn’t bend, she couldn’t help them. she was a failure, not the avatar.
zuko and ty lee had seen it, and tried to help her, but mai locked from them and pretended that she was fine.
they found iroh in ba sing se. he helped them to hide (somehow, they managed to hide druk too) and tried to teach them firebending, but neither mai, nor zuko had fire inside them.
mai and zuko flew to the sun warriors ruins to learn the true firebending from masters.
exited mai kissed zuko that day, he kissed her in return. no need to mention how embarrassed they were after that spontaneous kiss. of course, they felt mutual attraction, but they couldn’t start a relationship in the middle of the war.
they flew to the southern air temple to find an airbender teacher for mai. there were only a few ancient monks – genocide survivors, and a twelve-year-old boy.
the bald twelve-year-boy - sifu aang - agreed to teach mai airbending, while sifu - hotman  - zuko was continuing with their firebending training.
people from the northern water tribe refused to help them because they didn’t believe in mai’s good intentions.
frustrated mai started to see in her visions two girls.
siblings katara and sokka escaped from the northern water tribe. despite their hate for the fire nation, they agreed to teach mai because the avatar was their last hope.
they were travelling across the earth kingdom, helping people and fighting with the fire nation soldiers (led by azula) until they found toph.
mai was slightly embarrassed to be educated by a bunch of kids, but she had no choice.
when mai felt insecurity and fear, knowing that the entire world depends on her, she locked from her friends. only zuko could reach her and comfort her, only in his warm embrace she felt safe and could be “just mai”.
before the sozin’s comet mai kissed zuko desperately, thinking that was their last time.
first, she was fighting for zuko, and only then for the world’s peace. she hated ozai more than anyone and i do not think she preferred mercy in the end (sorry not sorry).
a few years after the war’s end, young fire lord zuko asked for her hand. mai refused at first, saying that she couldn’t be the avatar and the fire lady at the same time.
stubborn zuko never stopped convincing her how blessed and successful their union could be, until she agreed. after all, zuko always had her heart.
(mai would definitely ‘beat’ koh spirit hah)
honestly, i think i failed it, didn’t i? i’m really sorry.
but anyway thank you so much for the ask! avatar mai is such an interesting trope, who knows, maybe i’ll write some more about it one day (and include more maiko interaction).

Ty Lee for the character ask game!
ty lee, my beloved!
headcanon A: realistic
ty lee is an extremely talented dancer. i'm sure this one is a no-brainer given her acrobatic skills in canon, but i can see her crushing absolutely any style of dance. in a modern au, i would probably say she's best at ballet and/or contemporary. ballerina ty lee rights!
alternatively: ty lee is a secret airbender. i will die on this hill, it just makes too much sense.
headcanon B: while it may not be realistic, it's hilarious
she has absolutely no impulse control and she's actually the troublemaker of the group, especially when she was younger. she once convinced mai and azula to sneak into every guarded room in the palace, just to see if they could (they did).
headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends
ty lee's parents call her by the wrong name more often than not. it's the first time they stop apologizing for it (they'll never start again) that she chops off all her hair and tries not to cry, because at least now no one can ever mistake her for anyone but herself again.
(it grows back, but by then ty lee has found another way to make her name her own.)
headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own
ty lee and mai open a non-bending school together, teaching both knife-throwing and chi-blocking. it's from this school that republic city's first chi-blocking force is formed, and they never forget their founder. they marry and live happily together till they're old and grey <3
