Seeing this picture made me think that if Uncle Iroh had a phone it would be filled with Zuko's silly pictures. Uncle would consider all of them cute and he would gladly show them to the gaang. Meanwhile, Zuko would die from embarrassment.

Thinking abt the air nomads:
What if, after the war, once the dust has settled a little, Aang goes back to travelling, hoping that maybe he can find at least some trace of surviving airbenders. As an added bonus, he gets to do more of the exploring and wandering that he had to put on hold.
Toph goes with him ofc. She only just got a taste of real freedom and it was overshadowed by ever-present impending doom. While she's on speaking terms with her parents, she isnt quite ready to be back under their roof on a permanent basis. The rest of the gaang have their individual homes and responsibilities that they get back to, though they join for the odd field trip or adventure when they can.
So anyway, they're touring all over the world and over the years they notice just how displaced so many people have become. EK citizens who barely escaped the blaze but lost everything; FN military now decommissioned with no idea how to carry on; people looking for a new start in the hard-won peace. Maybe it starts with Toph heading back to Earth Rumble, where a group of young runaways scrounge for cheap fights to make a little money.
At each turn they find more and more people with no homes to return to and no family to protect them; runaways escaping the roles the war forced them into. Gradually, Aang and Toph start to see that they aren't so different from themselves. They just want a new start.
So they decide to give them one. They clean up the temples and set up villages in the surrounding areas (helps to be master earthbenders), where people can arrive and stay as long as they need. Travellers and refugees pass through in droves, sometimes choosing to stay and rebuild their lives there, sometimes continuing in their wandering with a guarantee that they'll always have a place to return to should they have the need.
Over time, the lemurs grow in number and even some flying bison calfs (hybrids with a relative species maybe?), can be seen in the skies. Whenever the founders visit, it isn't the same but Aang feels a little more at home.
The first time someone asks Aang to teach him his philosophies, and expresses his desire to become a monk, how can he refuse? Maybe it's a former soldier, somebody who's done terrible things, looking for a path to redemption. So Aang teaches him, and then he teaches others. And though they may not be airbenders, they are as earnest and faithful as any nun or monk Aang knew before. The temples become filled with new faces: Firebenders, Earthbenders, Waterbenders and non-benders all wearing Air nomad orange and yellow.
Aang always feared that it would be his responsibility to have airbender children, and the idea of forcing that on someone he loved terrified him. Maybe that's why he waited so long before acting on his feelings for his best friend, his travelling companion, his fellow-village builder and temple-restorer. How could they have a truly happy relationship with this pressure hanging over them? He wishes he could be content with the new way of things that he and his friends have created. But he knows that he can't be the last airbender forever...
Nobody knows why some children can bend the elements and others can't. Is it blood? Is it blessing? Is it the land in which you're born? Or is it the simple allocation of fates decided by the values and norms you're raised believing in? Is it enough to be surrounded by the culture and beliefs of the Air Nomads? Nobody knows...
All they know is that nobody sees it coming when the six-year-old daughter of two non-bender villagers from the Earth Kingdom and Northern Water Tribe sends herself flying twelve feet into the air with a sneeze.

Zuko accidentally calling Iroh dad in a tantrum only for Iroh to be moved by it.
Then later eventually, Iroh telling the ship crew about it and tearing up over it while one pats his back in support.

Mai gave Azula the knife she tried to use during the invasion when she was without bending.
Tumblr media
It also really looks like one of Mai's knives. Addition: I just love the Mai and Azula friendship and I’m sad to see when their complex relationship gets reduced to Mai always hated Azula and Azula bullied Mai 24:7 and got a kick out of it. Azula is not Mai's big nemesis, no, it are Mai's parents who mistreated her and not Azula. I see those two and Ty Lee being actual real friends. It only got worse when Azula got more under the wing of her father after Zuko’s banishment, when Ty Lee ran away and Mai left with her parents.

I'm thinking about Azula's attempt at tricking Zuko and Iroh to come back home and the horrible things she says to him in the episode. And like, I obviously don't have to say that Zuko didn't deserve that shit before I continue my next thoughts
But I personally, Azula's aggression makes me think "resentment"
I don't buy into the "she's evil so she said it to be evil"
It didn't seem like the kind of moment she'd look back on to laugh about, because while Azula definitely enjoys messing with Zuko, I don't feel it ever really looked like that unless she was slipping (much like after Mai and Ty Lee betrayed her)
I just headcanon she resented Zuko for being banished because Ozai had both them convinced it was Zukos fault. With Zuko not around to take the brunt of their fathers negative attention, Azula got it more often
And I wouldn't even say that Ozai blew off steam at her. Because it would be far more calculating than that, he just made her think that's what he was doing. Really, Ozai would've been breaking her down from just the favourite child who needs his praise, to the only child, who will be discarded and all affection withdrawn from her if she falls short of any standards he sets
Zuko being banished marked the acceleration of her adultification and isolation. Zuko still acted like a kid when he was 13, but Azula doesn't at 14, that tells you a lot
And of course maybe it started when Ursa was banished and Zuko was left with no one on his side in the Palace while Ozai groomed Azula into his mini me
But I do headcanon that Zukos banishment was the big push to isolating Azula fully and focusing on bending her to being only a weapon
And Ozai has Azula resenting Zuko, because while she's so smart and cunning, she's only been fed the stories she can imagine
That's my headcanon anyway. Azula resents Zuko for being banished because she ended up alone, and deep down, she knew something was very dark and off about her life at that point. There was just a cognitive disconnect on why it was all so miserable because she was getting all their fathers attention, and that's what Azula thought she wanted

Random ATLA headcanon:
Azula has perfect pitch, but absolutely zero musical ability aside from that. The girl can pick out a mistuned pipa from a 50 piece orchestra, but any time she tries to play an instrument, sing or hum she sounds like a dying cat. This leads to her being a brutal music critic, while only those closest to her are allowed to know about the horrific crimes against the human ear that she committed before Ursa allowed her to stop taking music lessons.
She also *cannot* figure out how to whistle, despite Ty Lee trying to teach her dozens of times. Mai can't whistle a tune either, but she can do one of the most ear-piercing finger whistles in the history of the Fire Nation

hello atla fans this is my take on the fanfic gaang nicknames bc god do i love to shorten and change a name
masterpost (✯◡✯)
there is no way to nickname aang naturally besides just calling him names (ex. toph’s “twinkle toes”)
alternatively. making his name longer in a nickname sort of way
sokka: sok
pronounced like sock. i don’t make the rules (yes i do)
idk why but i love that one sm it’s so goofy and silly
suki is another one i’m not sure you can really nickname. su?
zuko just doesn’t strike me as a nickname guy but i appreciate the mocking (lovingly ofc) zuzu
I understand THEORETICALLY why we would call katara kat but the first a in katara is pronounced as a schwa (unstressed syllable) not the short a in kat so it doesn’t work for me
toph (#1 nickname creator) having a one syllable name is a crime
but i do love the concept of her being the only one they can first name last name if she is in trouble
also referring to her just as beifong is pretty good too
azula…. zula? zules?
zuko could also call her zuzu right back
ty lee would probably shorten it to ty instead of lee because less common name
mai is mai. don’t call her anything else unless u r ty lee or u will probably get a knife thrown at u
little bonus is the whole gaang calling iroh uncle
Idk if this is a real post i just saw a post about zukkas using kat and zutaras using tara and i am not a zutara that’s for sure but i don’t like kat so #subvertingexpectations

If it wasn’t for the, you know, being on the run thing, I would make it a definite personal headcanon that another reason why Iroh became content with letting go of his ties to the Fire Nation is all because of watching Yue sacrifice herself.
Like, here’s Iroh, an old man, a former crown prince and general, who was raised to once believe the world was there for him to take, and he tried, and he failed.
Years later, not entirely a changed man, but just a bit wiser, he’s at one of the spiritual hotspots of the world, and he witnesses a girl, the same age as Zuko, sacrifice her life for not only her people, but essentially for the world.
A child saved the life of him and the entire world, a man who ultimately didn’t deserve it.
A man who’d lost his own, only child.
I, personally, definitely chalk up being present for Yue’s sacrifice as a silent, defining moment for Iroh’s trajectory into Season 2.

This scene is. just so perfect. I mean, the whole battle with Sokka, Toph and Suki trusting each other and fighting together is amazing but
I love how Sokka yells "MY LEG!" here when, with the distance he fell and how he's holding Toph, the guy probably also dislocated his shoulder for sure. But of course, in that moment where Toph is absolutely helpless, clearly feeling the racing of his heart, she can do absolutely nothing except hold on. So Sokka can't scream that the only part of his body that prevents her from falling is dislocated. And until the last moment he tried to hold on.

Angsty FN family headcanon I thought of last night:
Another thing Ozai resents Zuko for is his relationship with Iroh. Iroh was not the best older brother; neglective and absence at best and harsh at worse. Seeing Iroh being gentle and patience with Zuko fills Ozai with rage because why wasn't he worthy of similar treatment? Why does Zuko receive it and not him, Iroh’s own brother?

atla/tlok relationship headcanons
(sfw) cw: alcohol mention
Tumblr media
sokka
- is a flirt but in a very dorky/corny way
- is very protective due to past trauma
- shows you off any chance he gets. is very proud of you and wants everyone to know how great you are
- is quite literally your other half. you do everything together and you work simultaneously in harmony. it comes very naturally and easily
- he says 'i love you' first. he had been planning when and how to say it for a while and was very nervous so he ended up eventually just blurting it out after rambling nonsense for a bit
- plans very romantic dates, we're talking flowers, candles and chocolates, romantic comedies for movie date nights, massages and wine
- makes you poorly done homemade gifts and art
- is actually a good dancer and will dominate the dance floor with you at parties
Tumblr media
zuko
- in the beginning of your relationship physical contact/affection is very awkward, but with time it does become easier as zuko grows comfortable with you. eventually it shows how depraved of affection he is, he'll always be hugging and kissing you :,)
- super bad at planning dates. they always seem to go wrong so he asks the gang and iroh for advice. same goes with typical relationship advice, he sometimes says or does the wrong thing without meaning to which causes misunderstandings and unnecessary arguments (he's trying his best)
- is a lightweight when it comes to drinking. drunk zuko lets his guard down and is very open and affectionate
- is very defensive on your behalf which causes altercations with others. he's also the jealous type (he's insecure as hell)
- he's really awkward when it comes to social situations so he relies a lot on you in these moments
- feels the safest around you which makes it hard for him to be apart from you. loves cuddling and naps together <3
Tumblr media
mako
- flirts with you a lot. is easily jealous and possessive. he tends to always keep an arm around you/hand on you when you're out in public
- he's also very protective and willing to sacrifice himself for you
- isn't big on pet names. might call you 'babe' but that's about it
- loves play wrestling and sparring with you. he thinks it's very important that you know how to protect yourself so he becomes a personal trainer of the sorts for you. if you're drinking together the competitive side really comes out of him
- love language is acts of service and physical affection. he is really bad at gift giving if no one is helping him
- is also really bad with words sometimes which causes unnecessary arguments. he's pretty stubborn too so it might take a second for him to apologize

the real reason why Ty Lee joined the Kyoshi Warriors:
She had a moment where she intensely thought about what she really wanted in life and decided that standing out was less important than the pure thrilling joy of beating people up and getting away with it.

idk it just makes sense to me that the sun spirit (fanon-dubbed agni, of course) would have a “mortal” form on earth, too, like the moon and the ocean spirits do. especially since i’m pretty convinced the atla world is flat and the sun & moon thus operate on exceptionally different terms than ours do (given that they’re in fact. ya know. Spirits!!). and i like to think that agni exists as the sun warrior’s original/eternal flame, like… maybe he made a deal with a dragon or something and the dragon breathed him out as a gift to humans (..firebending comes from the breath after all…). and the sun warriors have tasked themselves with keeping the flame going forever, because if it goes out, the sun goes out too
