today I learned about "thumb book holders" in my search for ways to read giant fantasy paperbacks without injuring myself, and then I realized I could make one out of the 20-year-old polymer clay that I had lying around... so I did.
and god DAMN it's more effective than I ever expected, so I thought everyone should know about them. You can get really cheap mass-produced ones but this was fun to make and I'll probably make more ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Good People Doing Good Things -- Colin Bloom
Today I would like to introduce you to a young man named Colin Bloom. Colin lives in New York, but has dual U.S.-South African citizenship and spends time each year in South Africa. Back in 2018, during a visit to SA when he was 12 years old, he was awakened to the harsh reality that many children in South Africa do not have access to books at all and many people in South Africa are…

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023

if the significance of the internet archive being threatened has been lost on anyone, maybe these quick comparisons will put it into perspective…
Banning the Internet Archive would be the equivalent of burning the Library of Alexandria hundreds of times…

Me: hm, I want something to put on the TV as background noise... Huh. Looks like YouTube is recommending something called The Last Unicorn. That's perfect, it's probably some old shitty animation that has aged poorly! I can watch it ironically!
Me, 2 hours later as the credits roll: *crying, cheering, buying the book, composing the songs*
Me, 2 weeks later: So I have compiled all of the quotes from the book that I think could make good tattoos, and also, HOW HAVE I NEVER LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE LAST UNICORN FUCKING SLAPS??? This gay-ass little fairytale fed my soul! Watered my crops! Transed my gender! Can't believe I heard of this story from youtube recommendations, of all places!!

A post from @asksecularwitch inspired us to do a quick search on JSTOR about witches, and we discovered Fantasies of Gender and the Witch in Feminist Theory and Literature, an open access book by Justyna Sempruch.
Through a critical re-reading of feminist texts, Sempruch develops a new concept of the witch, one that challenges traditional gender-biased theories linking it either to a malevolent "hag" on the margins of culture or to unrestrained "feminine" sexual desire.

We are several days from pay day and I need $50 in order to go pick up medication before then. I fucking hate how often I have to do this (like, jesus christ, my pride is shattered), but here are our household pay links if anyone can help at all:
(No pressure, thank you in advance, I am so sorry I have to keep doing this, aaaa)

We also have a household wishlist for things (including groceries) that would improve our existence but that we haven't been able to afford.

Nobody should ever judge anybody for how they choose to read.
I love Amazon as little as the next person, but an e-reader like the Kindle has accessibility features that simply don't exist on physical books.
My Kindle also allows a disabled person like me to buy books without having to go out to places all the time. And it allows someone like me, whose primary language is English and living in a country where books in English are few and far in between, to be able to get the books I want easily and cheaply.
There are people who need audiobooks to be able to enjoy books at all. My almost completely blind grandmother is able to have books in her life again, after not being able to read for many years.
It's a good thing that books are available in different formats now. Books should be accessible for everybody.

Also, unrelated, but I love how Halsin refers to the druidic library (or at least parts of it) as "my books", though he doesn't seem otherwise personally attached to physical objects, and the library is obviously shared communally by all the druids. It's such an affectionate little thing; he probably spent a lot of time in that study and library, adding to the collection over the century, keeping the key with him at all times.
What I'm saying is give Halsin a little library in Reithwin.
