☆ Ellie Williams is quite the challenge, with her constant sarcasm in every social interaction. Often, her barely perceptible smile leaves others wondering if she's joking or being serious. She lives with a furrowed brow and rolling eyes at the orders she receives.

She always has something to say, with sarcastic and questionable comments that make it difficult to understand her true intentions.

Dina, at first, found Ellie's attitude exasperating, but she has grown accustomed to it over time. She simply laughs at every one of Ellie's comments, just like Jesse, who plays along by hitting her shoulder while shaking his head.

☆ In romantic situations, however, Williams finds herself at a loss.

She's clueless when it comes to romance! She can't even tell when a girl is trying to flirt with her, even if it's blatantly obvious. She just shrugs it off, deciding that the girl was just being friendly.

Even worse, her confident sarcasm falters in the presence of a cute girl. She can't maintain eye contact and finds herself looking at the ground, playing with her fingers.

☆ Ellie is the least dominant girl! When she started feeling something for Abigail, she decided to keep quiet, harboring her own fantasies until Anderson jokingly admitted she was in love with her, giving Ellie the confidence to move forward.

Ellie's complicated and difficult demeanor can disappear with just a stern look from Abigail, indicating that enough is enough. It often ends with Ellie seeking Abby, holding her hand, and glaring at everyone, but then softening her gaze when Abby places her hand on her shoulder.

☆ However, even though Abby is patient, sometimes she can't tolerate Ellie's attitude, and it's inevitable for her to get annoyed with her from time to time.

"I'm talking to you, you know?" Abigail asks, grabbing Ellie's jaw with her hand and turning her towards her so they can look at each other. "You're ignoring me on purpose."

"I don't know, am I?" Ellie responds with a question, shrugging and a smirk on her lips that only provokes more annoyance in Abby.

"God, you're insufferable..." Abby mutters through gritted teeth, quickly bringing Ellie's face even closer to hers to kiss her.

☆ Abigail wastes no time complaining about Ellie's foul language, letting out a sigh every time an unnecessary swear word slips from her lips. But she knows it's impossible to correct, so she settles for Ellie acknowledging it on her own.

☆ Despite their differences and occasional clashes, their dynamic is ultimately one of mutual respect and pure love, with Ellie keeping Abby on her toes with her antics and Abby keeping Ellie in check

I'm thinking zero chance they include the racist, classist overtones of R's distain for Nettles in the show. Would be great if they did but it seems obvious Saint Rhaenyra is too untouchable a character for ugly, human motivations, her fanbase needs her to be the liberal-minded Disney princess contrasted against Aegon otherwise their support of her makes no sense

Oh, less than zero. Her entire show character hinges on the idea that the only problem in this world is misogyny, which must be the only reason everyone doesn't fall at her feet, and not any of her many, many deficiencies- including her own misogyny. Same character who doesn't attempt to make a difference for any woman bar herself, who steals Driftmark from a female heir for her bastard son, who only cares about misogynistic laws of succession when they affect her:

Rhaenyra’s own claim to the Iron Throne was a special case, the Sea Snake insisted; her father had named her as his heir. Lords Rosby and Stokeworth had done no such thing. Disinheriting their sons in favor of their daughters would overturn centuries of law and precedent, and call into question the rights of scores of other lords throughout Westeros whose own claims might be seen as inferior to those of elder sisters. It was fear of losing the support of such lords, Munkun asserts in True Telling, that led the queen to decide in favor of Lord Corlys rather than Prince Daemon. The lands, castles, and coin of Houses Rosby and Stokeworth were awarded to the sons of the two executed lords.

At Rosby, she found the castle gates barred at her approach, by the command of the young woman whose claim she had passed over in favor of a younger brother.

She orders the murder of a teenage peasant girl- who is on her side- because she's jealous her noncey whore of a husband/uncle loved her more. Even if they won't show the language used towards Nettles (they refuse to really acknowledge the nasty Targ racial superiority & blood purity angle, I suppose the Velaryon casting makes it harder), her actions should damn her for anyone with eyes.

Her fight is only for herself, she does not want change and betterment for women, be they noble or common. She does not want women to rule after her, she just wants herself to live equal to a man without consequences and does not care for the brave smallfolk she calls "vermin". And I have no issue with that- if they just accepted it and portrayed her for what she is. That aspect made someone like Cersei even more interesting because she made no pretence; she was both victim and vicious perpetrator. Idk who decided that these Targaryen women- who enact the same violence and patriarchal tyranny on other women as the men around them- are righteous feminist queens, made to suffer the greatest injustice in history because they don't get to sit on a throne "owed" to them. They are no better than their male counterparts. They are spokes on the same damn wheel.

For all the hand wringing, she was the freest, most privileged woman in the realm, with a life and choices that almost every other woman would kill for, and she did fuck all with it for anyone but herself. (That too, poorly.) That would make for a fascinating, maddening character but instead we have to see a boring, even less compelling version of show!Daenerys, with none of the qualities that initially made her so great.

I want to talk about this moment between Lovelace and Minkowski immediately after Cutter dies:

Lovelace GASPS in relief. Both women COLLAPSE, wounded, at the end of their ropes. LOVELACE Nice... shot. MINKOWSKI Couldn't... have done it... without you, Captain. You all right? LOVELACE No. You? MINKOWSKI No, I... I... yeah... LOVELACE Stay with me, Minkowski. MINKOWSKI Yeah... We're almost through this. We just... need to... get Eiffel... And off of their attempts to hold onto consciousness, we -

Firstly, the acting of this scene is incredible. (The timestamp is 1:42:26 if you want to listen back.) I'm in awe of the way Emma Sherr-Ziarko and Ceilia Lynn-Jacobs convey the sense of pain and exhaustion and relief and trying to hold onto consciousness. The kind of damage they've undergone has been very different - Minkowski bleeding out from her gunshot wound, Lovelace recovering from the external control that caused her to inflict that gunshot wound. But the way these experiences manifest in their breathless pained voices is pretty similar. There's almost a kind of unity in that.

I love that the first thing Minkowski and Lovelace do after Cutter dies, even as they are struggling to speak, is to acknowledge each other's contribution to this moment.

"Nice shot" feels like a comment more suited to congratulating someone on doing well at a shooting range than as a response to a friend successfully harpooning their evil boss. There's a casualness to it as a phrase that feels almost humourous in this context, but it also reflects the fact that there isn't really an established thing to say in a situation like this. (More below the cut)

Minkowski could have just taken full credit here - after all she's the one who fired the killing shot - but she doesn't. It reflects the ethos of this show that neither Cutter nor Pryce, the major antagonists, is defeated by a single protagonist alone, and that the protagonists themselves are aware of that.

This scene is an example of a kind of exchange we get a few times throughout the show, where a character asks another character if they are okay and the answer is a clear no. There's an conversation like this between Eiffel and Minkowski in Ep12 (EIFFEL: You okay, Commander? / MINKOWSKI : No, Eiffel. My second in command just betrayed me and tried really, really hard to murder both us. I’m pretty damn far from “okay.”), and between Hera and Minkowski in Ep29 (HERA: Commander? Are you okay? / MINKOWSKI: No. You? / HERA: No. But I will be.), and between Eiffel and Hera in Ep41 (EIFFEL: Are you okay now? / HERA: No, Officer Eiffel. I'm not. But... I'm going to be.) I think I've said this before in tags on a post, but there's something about that type of exchange that fits the tone of this show so well to me. Of course none of these characters are all right, not with what they've been through. But the asking is still important, because of the care these characters have for each other. And the honest answer is still important, because this is a show partly about communication and because sometimes the awful things need to be acknowledged.

I should probably also say that there are also plenty of instances in Wolf 359 where people falsely claim to be fine in response to questions like this. There's an awful lot of emotional repression and compartmentalising on that space station. Which makes it more significant when characters are honest about not being okay.

In this scene, Minkowski and Lovelace don't need to waste words on saying why they aren't all right. I picture them both looking down at Minkowski's wound as she speaks here. And they laugh, or as well as they can do in their current condition, at how absurdly obvious it is that they aren't okay. Maybe that attempt at laughter is a way to keep going. And they are both so determined to keep going.

Lovelace tells Minkowski "stay with me", even though Lovelace is struggling to remain conscious herself. There's something so tender about that to me, and it's particularly heart-wrenching given that Lovelace was forced against her will to fire the bullet that wounded Minkowski.

When Minkowski says "We're almost through this", it feels like a call back to her conversation with Eiffel earlier in this episode, when he said "We're almost through. Just one more day, and then we're done." The "this" in "almost through this" somehow holds everything that they've been through on the Hephaestus. The repeated sense that this is the last confrontation that they will face on that station is perfect for a finale. But there's also something very emotionally heavy about that finality, especially when spoken by a woman who is bleeding out from a gunshot wound. And yet through her exhaustion and her pain, Minkowski expresses hope that they will get "through this", that they are "almost" on the other side of the whole nightmare.

Neither Minkowski nor Lovelace even consider the option of not going to look for Eiffel (and Hera). It would have been perfectly reasonable for them to have gone back to the Urania to try to patch Minkowski up and to wait to see if Eiffel and Hera were able to join them. But these characters would never do that.

They go to look for Eiffel even though Minkowski has been shot and Lovelace has been subject to horrific external control. They go to look for Eiffel even though both of them are "at the end of their ropes" and struggling to hold onto consciousness. They go to look for Eiffel even though waiting on the Urania was the plan they'd agreed upon with Hera. They go to look for Eiffel even though, for all they know, Eiffel and Hera might have the situation completely handled, or might even already be safely on the Urania. They go to look for Eiffel (and Hera) because only once they are all together can they consider themselves "through this".

I swear I need to do a rewatch, when did Sasha say something about Richonne?

When Sasha's still going insane from grief and PTSD in Alexandria, and Michonne and Rosita go out to find her in the woods. Sasha very pointedly tells Michonne that Michonne can't help her with her grief because it all worked out for Michonne, and questions why Michonne can't see that. And Michonne just gives her shocked pikachu face lol.

Interestingly, of all the various people playing Greek chorus to Michonne in 5b/6a, Sasha is the one who's most specifically referencing Richonne. (Outside of the Alexandrian guy with the post-apoc wifey story, but he's a plot device and doesn't KNOW that he's describing Michonne and Rick's situation. He's just the writers' mouthpiece outlining the relationship arc to the audience so they understand what's about to happen.)

Spencer could just be referring to Team Family as Michonne's "life back there." The implication exists that Abe and Deanna know what the likely result is of them pushing Michonne to claim a life for herself that she wants. Deanna especially clearly clocks Rick and Michonne as partners and so approaches them as such and pairs them up in her Plans. But deciding what you want and going and claiming a life is ultimately still open-ended as they present it to Michonne.

But Sasha can't be talking about anything except Michonne's relationship with Rick (and Carl and Judith) specifically. Because without the understanding that Michonne is, effectively, Mrs. Grimes, Michonne is in the exact same position as Sasha is. A member of the extended found family, but with no lover/partner and no immediate family of her own, because those people are all dead. The only difference would be that Michonne's grief just isn't as fresh, but she would still, in direct contrast to what Sasha says, be the exact person who could help her. And it's even more significant that Sasha directs this specifically and exclusively at Michonne even though Rosita, who has a whole acknowledged romantic relationship, is right there. Because Sasha not only sees that Michonne and Rick are a thing, but (accurately) recognizes what they have as something permanent and settled--a happy ending.

Other thoughts in this 9-1-1 season

It baffles me this season is actually full of great moments in their individual character arcs, but because none does have a continuity in terms of narrative, they end up lacking meaning.

Athena did solve Tania's murder, a 40 years old cold case that was the literal reason she became a cop. Did we see any post perspective on that? Nope. Instead she just kept floating around the season. We actually did have some quality bathena scenes supporting each other and flirting here and there, but that is it. Honestly I'm not sure if this is result of AB becoming too expensive for FOX to give much screen time to her, as they did the bare minimum with her because it's in AB's contract to appear in every episode of the show.

Hen had a chance to be captain, quit med school and Karen's lab did explode and she almost died. Did we see any post perspective over that, any discussion or consequence in the narrative for either of them? Nope, in fact Karen's lab exploding only served as a point to show up the relationship beginning, because it doesn't have any continuity.

We did have the Nathaniel thing that just felt confusing to majority of the watchers who could remember that in S2 they did leave the impression that Henren and Nathaniel kept in good terms over Danny and that the path was always open for Nathaniel.

Then we had Hen and Karen fostering again, but since the show didn't care in showing the audience that point, we spent the whole scene asking ourselves "who the heck are these kids?" a question that keeps relevant in the ending as they're possibly adopting a new kid we never heard or never saw. Don't get me wrong I'm excited for Henren adopting again I just wish we didn't get it in such a rushed way.

We also did have comeback of captain Hen in this episode, but as she is concussed, it's not there for long, then we past over her concussion, and we don't even see Karen in the hospital.

Eddie did not have an individual arc in this season at all. At least I don't remember of it, and the fact I don't remember, means whatever he had didn't stick enough to impact me. He was underused. Then instead of keeping that way (which would be a bless actually) they decided to shove the obligatory last minute LI on him. Which kinda makes him hypocrite considering a couple of episodes ago he was saying Buck that dating people they rescue doesn't end well and here he is, trying to date someone he rescued.

Bobby in this season had a role in supporting Athena and his own individual arcs. His sponsor, Wendell, came out of nowhere, and as fast the man appeared, he died. Then, Bobby spent a couple of episodes obsessing over said death, cracked the case, saved Tamara, beat down a dirty rehab clinic and it's psychopathic managers, we actually could grasp a storyline of him becoming a sponsor, and then nothing. The maximum was a mention of Wendel post the episode in one of the scenes, what already can be considered a miracle taking in count those storylines are forgotten the moment their episode ends.

We also had a single episode of Bobby finally acknowledging he does see Buck as his son, we even see him trying to be there for Buck, but the Wendel arc kinda limited that. Sadly, Bobby and Buck barely interacted in a relevant way after it.

Then we had this build up for Bobby trapped in this episode with ominous signs here and there through the entire 6B. To be honest I get the impression that the show has been wanting to hurt Bobby badly (the angst of that would be glorious, let's face it), but loses courage through the process to pull it off properly. I mean, I get it, the man is just everyone's dad and it's traumatizing to see this pillar of strength for the whole team to be hurt, but in this case, because there was no way that fall would have such minimal consequences (and the show just skip all the healing process again), all the mystery and build up for it felt anti-climatic in some sense.

Also, the cruise, It serves both Athena and Bobby's characters and we can only pray the writers will not skip through that and actually start the next season with it taking the opportunity to do a decent opening season disaster (idc the team just went trough a disaster, no one told the show to put time a skip between the bridge collapse and the point where the episode ended).

Buck... *sigh* What can I say? He had at least 4 individual arcs in this season and he is possibly the only character who's the storylines were allowed to have a continuity, the absolute problem in his case is that none of said continuity makes sense or was satisfying to watch.

The "journey to be at ease" wasn't concluded at all, the "leadership arc" felt like we got introduced to it and jumped directly to it's conclusion as nothing in between justify the growth we saw. His "death experience" apparently served for him to accept his parents negligence, but as the matter isn't touched again and we can't even see him interacting much with Bobby in a relevant way after, it just ended up inconclusive. The "sperm donation" is only there where we can't certainly say what was the purpose or what did change in his character, tbh even if the line "because I could" sounds touching and beautiful, it seems a easy way of justify a completely unnecessary arc that literally didn't serve any other purpose other than consume screentime.

Chimney and Maddie. They began the season working the issues of their relationship post S5, then spent the season most likely just enjoying their time (getting some breath on their characters I suppose) until the marriage question pops off and this is their arc for the season.

Ironically this was an arc people complained it was dragged, but it's literally the one single arc in this season that does have a consistence between it's beginning and it's conclusion. The fact it felt dragging is because we are not used in watching the characters work their issues in screen rather than off-screen, so yes it was frustrating to watch Chimney go spiral over the question due his trust issues and anxiety, Hen concern regarding Chim, Maddie uncertainty over the marriage, we even had Hen and Maddie working that "beef" directly, it was frustrating to watch, but these were matters that were properly introduced, worked and concluded through the latest 3 episodes of this season. Hence it's probably the best arc of this season in terms of narrative.

So, from all the individual arcs this season only one did have proper build up, work and conclusion, as majority (because ofc Buck's character had to be underwhelming again) did have it's amazing peaks, but lacked continuity, which is literally the biggest problem of the show currently.

I really hope the move to ABC step up the continuity aspect of the show, because I think it's probably the biggest problem after overexposing Buck and utilizing him only to walk in circles.

The double standards for Anne and Mary compared to Jane and Mary always baffles me. So when Anne prioritizes her own child and safety she's a bitch, but when Jane does the exact same thing (when her child doesn't even exist yet) it's not only ok, it's ignored. Because thinking about it breaks the saccharine love show people are weirdly invested in. Anne fighting for Elizabeth's rights is treated like it doesn't matter, or played down completely to pretend she only wanted Mary recognizing her marriage because she's......evil? Idk. And she got a kick out of it? But Mary needing to do it for Jane is....ok? Right? Fair? It makes no sense when Mary fights against recognizing Anne she's so brave and her stans are outraged she ever be expected to "lower herself" but when she gives in later it's no big deal Henry and Jane demanding it? And whatever Mary went through during Anne's time was the sickest cruelty and all what Anne planned, but with Jane, it never happened, or it's suddenly all Henry and Jane.....was too nice to stand up to him? It's like Mary accepting she's illegitimate is horrific when it's for Anne but some boring i-am-not-a-robot check box task she's we've gotta get out the way when it's for Jane. Like if Mary had gone on resisting do they think Jane would've been cool with it?

Well, we don't really know if "Jane demanded it", actually given the contemporary evidence that seems unlikely (although tbf it's murky...in May 1536 Chapuys claims she's actually argued for Mary's total restoration, but in June 1536 there's another report from another source that she 'begged [the King] on her knees five times' to not arrest Mary--not 'restore her'-- which is often conflated with the former to do the same, by July 1536 Chapuys claims all she’s done is beg Henry not to arrest Mary, not restore her). Tl; dr if her opinion on this was drastically different from HVIII's at the outset, she seems to have conformed to his rather quickly, was more the point I was trying to make there.

But yeah, anyways, I don’t think Jane would’ve been warm towards her had Mary refused to acknowledge her as Queen (which, if we take Mary’s Title Act seriously, was what she actually believed … although if you subscribe to Loades’ theories, it wasn’t what she believed then, but what she came to believe, and her conformity of the summer of 1536 was genuine ‘conversion’), called her ‘Lady Jane’ and the ‘King’s mistress’ as she had AB. Nothing is impossible but I don’t find that… probable.

Just kidding, Chapuys’ report and the Bishop of Faenza’s were muddled in my memory, here we go:

Although, instructive that praise of Jane from this group (the above Bishop, Reginald Pole, even Chapuys to some extent) ebbs away once news travels that she hasn’t effected Princess Mary’s restoration, after all. The praise thus seems like it was rather conditional.

the ab* slur is very much still a slur here in australia. always has been. maybe it’s cause in the US it seems like Indigenous peoples use the terms "Native" or "Indigenous" to describe themselves, but in australia, "Aboriginal" is more common. from what i’ve heard from Indigenous people here in australia, being called "Native" to them is offensive. i would never call an Aboriginal australian person that because i’ve grown up knowing it as offensive and dehumanising. but i know that people Indigenous to north america use the term "Native American", and i’m able to acknowledge that some words are offensive to some groups but not others due to historical and cultural context. i don’t see why americans can’t understand that it’s the same for the slur in question. maybe you haven’t heard it much there, maybe it would sound more confusing than offensive if someone said it there, i don’t know. but the internet is a global space and especially in just the english-speaking tumblr community, there are a LOT of australians, and a LOT of Indigenous australians, who are going to be disgusted and horrified and offended upon seeing that slur used. it’s not just weird discourse or something, it’s a racial slur that Aboriginal people have repeatedly said not to use. this isn’t directed at you, just at the anon/s and certain people discussing this stuff

The question of what our indigenous groups prefer to be called is kind of complicated, but yeah, it doesn't include "aboriginal".

(On average, actual tribal affiliation is preferred. Some people like "Native", "Indigenous", "Indian", or "American Indian". Or sometimes, "Indian" is wildly offensive and only for the in-group. "Native American" seems to be more of a white people in the media thing but there was a fad for it at some point. In Canada, people use "First Nations", and it's not like the current border is all that meaningful to groups that were here before. Yadda yadda.)

follow up to the media analysis question, how do you keep track of all the details? like for example if im watching a series I'll obviously keep track of the overall plot and theme of the series but I've seen you respond to asks with very specific moments in a show to illustrate your points.

for example in the first episode of TVD when elena says something to Jeremy about her concern bec of his drug use, you're able to track it to "okay she never actually does that" whereas most of the viewers go "okay she said that so its been established that she cares ab this."

or even w her humanity switch i saw people on a post arguing ab how damon didn't force her to do it bc most of the viewers didnt have in mind that she was sired (hell I feel like the writers didnt realise that either bc it's never acknowledged from what I remember)

Oh, the writers absolutely realized what they did. The fact she's sired is the point because it absolves her from any real responsibility since she didn't choose to turn off her humanity but it also allows her to do "dark" things and go through that part of the vampire experience but then they also wanted to keep Delena a viable option so they decided not to get into the fact that he forced her to turn off her humanity, which is hilarious because ignoring that also undercuts what Delena is meant to be, which is "messy" and "complicated" but they wanted it both ways

how do you keep track of all the details?

Well, like I keep saying, it's not at the forefront of my mind. Like, if I were to have an in person conversation with someone, I wouldn't necessarily be able to be as in depth as I am on tumblr because I wouldn't have the chance to think about it. I can take as long as I want with an ask and sort out exactly what I want to say.

Well, that's because that's passive engagement, just because the dialogue says it doesn't mean it actually happens, so watch the show, watch to see if what you're watching and what you're hearing match.

You might not notice it right away but a few episodes or a whole season goes by, if you pay attention to what the characters actually do then if you have a conversation about Elena's personality, you can be like well from what I have seen does she actually do what she says?

Like, you just have to pay attention.

For me specifically, I'm a writer, I'm in the business of building and creating and developing characters and dynamics and relationships so it comes naturally to me to just watch out for these things, it just feels like a natural part of the viewing experience.

How i'd do a clone high reboot/second season.

I would not set it in 2020s and there's three reasons for it. First and the smallest one, that setting jump is huge. The changes are drastic and jarring and its really not needed. Sevond, there arent strong signifyers for the current decade. Things move too fast and you cant pin specific lasting traits until you have hindsight. Any joke made will be dated by the time it airs. And 2020 teen stereotypes have been done to death. Third, any political comedy would benefit from a degree of separation.

I wouldn't keep it in the 90s. The 90s at this point is so far removed and so attached to recent aesthetics and tropes I think it would be better to push forward. I'd set it early to mid 2010s. It gives separation from current politics and a solid frame while still leaving room for relevant issues to be brought up. It wasn't that long ago but there's a significant safety gap.

Onto plot things, I think it's important to discuss Abe first. He's the most central character in the original. I don't like the bashing angle the pilot used. I love to hate Abe, but it's not fun to watch him fumble around and whine in the background.

His life revolves around his two best friends and cleo. One friend is out of the picture but I'll get to next. The other is moving on and I think that's important. And cleo would never let the shit he pulled slide. So he's more or less alone episode one. Joan does still talk to him, but she's carving our space for herself and isn't going to coddle him. Abe has to reorient him self (and by extension the show) in a way where he can function without his friends and relationships as crutches. And he has to form a conclusion that works even if it's not the right one (not the right one being both more in character and better for jokes).

On to Ghandi. He is integral to the comedic pace of the show and also one of the best characters. I'm not going to go into ways to replace him or work around his absence. The way I'd deal with him, ignoring possible corporate decisions on his inclusion, is this:

if I put hum in the first episode I wouldn't acknowledge any differences at all, just have him be called by a comedians name and identify as that person with no other changes. Not going that route though, I wouldn't have him in the first episode beyond showing him still frozen. If we dealt with him immediately the episode would be overcrowded. Episode one needs to reestablish cleo, jfk, Joan, and Abe while also setting up new characters in the new setting. Instead he'd be found in episode two, determined by shadowy figures to be a clone of a comedian, and upon being dethawed he just goes with it. The name ghandi is never mentioned. When he meets back up with his friends he stops them from saying hi by emphasizing his name and they're like, may wierd, but they also go with it without question.

Option two also allows for ghandi to explore his new identity for the first time in a much more lighthearted way than Abe and Joan. It gives him a base interaction with shadowy figures that can lead to plot lines later. And it meas you can bring back cleo not knowing his name because he changed it.

Speaking of cleo, her lack of popularity would come from her no longer being part of any school organizations (she used to be cheer captain and dtudent body presdent). But she will regain her power and subjects, she's just not sure how yet.

Joan does get along with the current popular kids, who are on student council and also in various student activist groups. She gets the chance to thrive in episode one. Later on there will be drama and backstabbing but for now she finally feels like she belongs. Also, look wise her style is viewed as sort of retro grunge chic and kind of cool. She enjoys the compliments at first but they bother her later on.

Jfk follows Joan. He doesn't really care about the environment but he's certainly interested in the sustainability of Joan's pants. And gay people are cool, he has gay dad's. Both because it'd be good for him and to vibe him non Joan and popularity centered plot lines.

I'd keep joanfk going strong throughout the reboot. I'm a strong believer in active relationships being more compelling than will they won't they shenanigans.

I think that's all the main characters. Scudworth and mister buttlertron would proceed as normal. I didn't particularly like the new shadowy figure overseer, she didn't show off anything other than being blandly intimidating and lizard. I like the og shadowy figure. He was fun and had good vibes with scudworth. I'd deffs bring him back.

As for smaller characters: van gogh should get a hot bitch Era. Maybe assisted by Marie currie who has always existed on one. It could be part of a ghandi subplot.

no no thats not what i meant i think i didnt word my ask properly.. i get that as a whole its racist mistreatment of bonnie and i also get that the reasons behind this particular incident on the writers part was also racist but thats not what i was talking ab which is what i meant by the first few lines lol i was trying to acknowledge it and not dismiss it

i mean like in the show itself, as in from the characters perspectives i guess? why would abby or bonnie be extremely upset about this if abby never really cared ab magic in the first place.

maybe my understanding of media/analysis is kinda rudimentary lol bc like we as viewers can spot the issues with the writing but within the show itself, like if these were real people why would they react the way they did. maybe i shouldnt be separating the two idk.

I think you're right in that last part, you can't really separate the two. I understood what you mean initially, and what I'm saying is that you cannot, in good faith, engage in that kind of discourse, because the issues with Bonnie's character, her racist mistreatment, and the SL with her mother are inextricably linked. I don't know that there's a need to try to "see it from the character's perspective", to still see the problems in a case like this, but for sake of argument, let's do that:

Consider it from Abby's perspective: now my memory around her very brief sl are fuzzy, but she wasn't able to use magic, which is why she didn't go back to Mystic Falls, she sealed Mikael and then lost her access to magic, but being around Bonnie, made her stronger, and able to actually help Bonnie (something something nature punishing her for abandoning her child). Abby abandoned her husband and child to start a new life, then Bonnie brings all this chaos to her doorstep. She tries to help, and then she's forcibly turned into a vampire, and it's clear, she doesn't want to be one, because that's the whole thing with witches right? They see vampires as unnatural, not belonging, and now she's completely cut off from magic and the spirits, which she'd only just reconnected with, along with her daughter.

Now Bonnie's perspective, she's mad her mother started a whole new life without her, and that's completely understandable. It hurts. She's dealt with the passing of her grandmother, and is obviously still grieving that (because you don't ever just stop). So then she finally sort of finds common ground with her mother, and then she betrays her by poisoning her and turning her over to the originals, to save this other guy, who is not her biological child. That's really terrible. Then she has to put that aside to do the spell, come to some sort of acceptance, and then, Damon, a character who has been terrorizing them for 3 seasons now, kills her, after being the reason her gramms is dead, and has tried to kill Bonnie before, forcibly turns her mother. Now, from where I'm sitting, it never made sense Gramms died for those white ass vampires. But it makes even LESS sense, that Bonnie let Damon live long enough to turn around and kill her mother, once again, something destructive he does in Elena's name. If I'm looking at it through Bonnie's perspective, I'd be really fucking sick and tired of being put through this shit, largely by Damon, while everyone stands around wringing their hands and watching.

So that brings me right back around, to our understanding of the show as viewers. The context is exactly that, context. It informs our understandings of scenes we see in the show, and like I said before, you cannot divorce the context from the moment and try to argue it. It's manipulation, intentional or not, and it's nor discussing in good faith. You HAVE to consider the context that Bonnie is deeply mistreated and Abby's character arc is another arm of that mistreatment, and I think the question that must be asked at this point, is why do you need to divorce the context from this moment to understand it or engage with it? Why does it have to live outside of Bonnie's treatment as a character? What is gained by doing that?

Verbal Abuse: 10 Signs and How to Get Help

1. Degrading your self worth

It's common for verbal abusers to try to make you feel bad about yourself. Zrenchik says they may use statements such as:

"You're worthless."

"You're an embarrassment."

"You are not important to me or anyone."

"You are disgusting."

"You're crazy."

They may say things like this to lower your self-worth, in hopes of keeping you trapped in an abusive relationship. "When you have low self-esteem, you are easier to control and will tolerate intolerable behavior," Zrenchik says.

2. Making you believe you're not liked by others

Zrenchik says verbal abuse is all about using power to control someone. If an abuser can keep you isolated from others, they'll have even more control and influence over you.

They may criticize your words or behaviors, saying something like, "This is why no one likes you." This has the potential to put a greater distance between you and your loved ones, since your abuser's attempts may cause you to believe that you're unliked or unloved by others, says Zrenchik.

3. Manipulating you

An abuser may use manipulative statements to coerce or guilt you into doing something that you do otherwise, says Christie Kederian, licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice.

For example, they might say, "If you really loved me, you would stay home with me tonight instead of going out with your friends," or "If you really loved me, you would keep the details of our relationship private."

4. Any kind of name-calling

Zrenchik says name-calling is designed to harass or make fun of someone, so you can be sure when your partner is calling you these things, they're trying to put you down and hurt your self-esteem.

If your partner calls you names like "dumb," "fat," "stupid," or any other type of insult, they are engaging in a primary form of verbal abuse, says Kederian. This is degrading to you and makes your partner feel more in control.

5. Threatening to leave

Verbal abusers may threaten to leave the relationship if things don't go exactly the way they want.

For instance, a threat such as "If you don't do this, I'll leave you," can cause a victim to cater to the abuser's wishes. Threats and if/then statements are meant to scare the victim into staying with the abuser and under their control, Kederian says.

6. Condescending comments and put-downs

An abuser might make snide, condescending remarks to put you down and try to make you feel bad about yourself so that you question your abilities and self-worth.

For example, Kederian says they might tell you, "No wonder you can never get a promotion, you're always behind on your work and you can never get anything done." Again, this goes back to lowering your self-esteem so you're easier to control.

7. Gaslighting

A major tactic of verbal abusers is gaslighting, where an abuser says things that make you question reality and second guess yourself.

Elizabeth Jarquin, a licenced marriage and family therapist in private practice and adjunct professor at Northcentral University, says a few types of gaslighting are:

When the abuser tries to convince you that your feelings or thoughts are wrong.

When the abuser straight up tells you that your emotions or feelings are wrong.

When the abuser undermines you, saying something like, "Are you sure? What you're saying doesn't sound true."

8. Ignoring you

An abuser may use their words (or no words at all) by either not acknowledging your existence, says Jarquin. This is an attempt by the abuser to keep the power in their hands and cause you to feel belittled.

A 2018 study found that this is a common method of emotional abuse. The majority of study participants (61%) said their romantic partner refused to talk to them in an attempt to punish or hurt them.

9. Not letting you speak

A verbal abuser may not allow you to speak. "Essentially, they are not allowing the other person to communicate with them. By doing this, they are exerting control over the individual's voice," says Jarquin.

When you don't even have a chance to say your piece or stand up for yourself, there is a clear power imbalance in the relationship.

10. Blaming you

Verbal abusers may blame you for their own toxic behavior. For example, Jarquin says an abuser might yell, "It's your fault I screamed at you. You pissed me off." This is because abusers often refuse to take ownership for their own actions.

11. Pushing you to hurt yourself

"There is no more dangerous and damaging act a verbal abuser can take than trying to push you to the point of self-harm or suicide. If your partner is telling you to harm yourself, this is a clear sign of danger," Zrenchik says.

For example, they might explicitly say something like, "Why don't you just go kill yourself?"

This language is explicitly used to attempt to hurt you and put you at risk — especially if you have a history of mental illness or suicide attempts.
