“Are you from like, Travertine, Devil’s Elbow, Cloverleaf way?” Artie asked, gesturing with three fingers to indicate the cluster of towns. They were barely towns, really, more like loosely grouped homes, farms, and rural industry that were large enough to each have their own shrine, pantry, schoolhouses, and Pony Express stations, but not much more.

“Yeah,” Lou said, surprised into letting the ‘curse’ talk lie. “How did you know?”

“Your accent,” she said.

“I don’t have an accent,” Lou said. She involuntarily covered her mouth with her hand. “Y’all have accents.”

“Wait, don’t tell me which one. Let me guess,” Artie said, excited. She pushed her hair out of her face and thought hard for a moment. “Okay. What does a bird lay?”

“An egg?” Lou said.

“‘Aig’,” Artie repeated.

“That’s— that's not what I sound like,” Lou protested.

Artie ignored her and continued. “The feeling when you wanna go to sleep?”

“Sleepy,” Lou said. She knew what Artie was trying to get her to say, but she didn’t want to play along anymore. Artie was having too much fun with it and Lou was beginning to feel cross-grained.

“Come on,” Artie said, looking over the top of her new, cursed sunglasses at her.

“Tired,” Lou said, begrudgingly.

“‘Tarred,’” Artie repeated. 

“Okay, stop making fun of me,” Lou said. “I get it. I’m country as a turnip green.”

“I’m not making fun. I’m investigating,” she said. “Besides, I like it. Your accent. And I like turnip greens.”

Lou didn’t say anything, just lifted her hat, smoothed her sweaty hair back, and put it back on her head. They were quiet for a while and Lou hoped Artie had decided not to pursue the question any further.

“The thing you write with? The ink one?” Artie said finally, with a little smile.

Lou heaved a heavy sigh and glared at her. She just smiled back, looking at her with those huge, dark eyes. “Pen,” she said, finally.

“‘Pin’,” Artie repeated, visibly delighted that Lou was still playing along. “Cloverleaf?”

Lou’s eyebrows raised involuntarily. How did she know that? “You had a one in three chance,” Lou huffed.

Artie leaned back with a big grin. Lou instinctively looked away from her teeth. “Anyway, don’t be embarrassed about being a country girl. Johnny Knives is inaka, too.”

“How did you know?” Lou asked.

“About you? I don’t know. I’ve been all over the place and I like hearing people talk. And my dad is from near Travertine,” Artie said. “I guess, me too, but. It’s complicated. Anyway, you got a stronger accent than her. So it was easy. I feel like the pin-pen thing is so Cloverleaf. Oh, and how you say golly like that all the time. ‘Gol-lee’. Very Cloverleafian.”

my friend @pegglefan69 is writing a really good wizard book that i'm currently beta reading. in the 1970s, an immortal wizard gets trapped in a tree by his evil apprentice and is found later by a goth in 2007. lots of hijinks, lots of gay, and if it sounds like it might be YA because there are wizards + hijinks: NO. absolutely not. you can read the first chapter (for free) on his patreon. he's a really really fabulous writer and i don't say that lightly or just because he's a friend. his narrative voice & skill with creating characters are fantastic.

my friend @katieaki is an incredible artist and author and has spent the last... few years(? a long time) building a really beautiful, queer post-apocalypse wasteland. she's working on a Choose Your Own Wasteland Story which posts live on twitter, and it's interactive, meaning you get to vote for what you think should happen at certain plot points. the current story is Pony Express, which you can read (for free) on her patreon.

like robin, her narrative voice is great, she has SUCH an incredible cast of characters (who all eventually get drawn) and it is really really sure to delight anyone looking for some fantastic queer literature and worldbuilding. she's written other things too, and i think they were up on a gumroad maybe... but i couldn't find that (katie if you see this can you let us know??)

i'm also beta reading for Ladz (i'm not sure if they're on tumblr) and they have two books up for sale right now on their itch--their latest is Ice Upon A Pier, a Lesbianoir fantasy novella about a prolific contract killer in a secondary world inspired by 70s/80s New York. I haven't read it, and i'm not sure what CW/TWs it might need, but i'd check out their stuff! the book i'm beta reading for them right now is really fun and they've got a lot of huge fun big ideas in the works.

if you want some queer gothic stuff, look into @velvettapeworm. he has a book out called So Sang the Riverman, "a story which tells of the primordial world’s destruction after the spirit of growth, Fervor, makes off with the heart in Decay’s grave." I've read a little bit of it and it's very good, but also "i've only read a little" means i can't give CW/TWs for it. he has some shorts out as well, which you can read here on his website. he's also a really fabulous artist.

Mending Fences

Charley stood there in a stupor in front of his X great grandfather Lindbergh. It felt like the two were in a never ending stare off. There was a pregnant pause before Lindbergh spoke up.

“Glad to see your up and kicking kid.” Lindbergh said. 

Charley stood there struggling between emotions of anger and fear. He was angry at the older Mink for sabotaging the barricade which caused Charley to be separated from his parents and forced into the harsh wasteland. Yet at the same time he feared that with the wrong move or the wrong word Lindbergh could wipe Charley out of existence with a simple snap of a finger.

 “Name’s Lindbergh.” Lindbergh said as he held out a hand. Charley stared at the gesture unsure of what to do, should he let his anger boil over and berate the older Mink or thank Lindbergh for saving his life. “Whatever you choose you better do it soon before they get suspicious.” Charley told himself. Charley thought back on Lindbergh’s last recording. “My time is up, as of now the Revolutionaries could be all wiped out, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from being with Dragon and the gang is that destiny has a funny way of working things out. If its destiny’s desire then the Revolutionaries will return one day, so I’ll leave it up to destiny if Project: Minuteman will ever see the light of day. To the person listening to this I guess destiny has chosen you to restart this project so lets begin, activate self destruct code: N-X-211. Goodbye and good luck”. An elderly Lindbergh spoke.  Charley thought back on that word, destiny. Looking at this version of Lind there was no way he could’ve known about the war, nor that he would be sealed within a barricade with no rescue party to bust him out later, nor the repercussions his actions would befall on his own family 200 years later. When he really thought about it Charley could only sum up destiny as the only explanation, but why him? Why didn’t destiny chose someone more suited for this like his mother Ratchet; she was determined, headstrong, brave, and a leader when she knew she needed to be.  Destiny could have chosen someone for Lindbergh’s will long before Charley was born or long after he had passed on, yet for some strange reason it had determined Charley was the right one for the job. “I’m Charley, its nice to meet you.” Charley said sharing Lindbergh’s gesture and shook his hand. “You're quiet something kid, your escape from death has been the hottest gossip throughout all of Momoiro Island.” Lindbergh said with a slight chuckle. “Well I have whoever made this artificial heart to thank.” Charley said. From behind Charley could hear Koala approaching. “ You don’t have to look that far, Lindbergh here is not only our Southern commander but also head inventor. That’s his handy work ticking inside of you.” Charley turned to Lindbergh. “You saved my life Lindbergh, I can’t thank you enough for that.” Charley said sincerely. “There’s no need to thank me kid, we couldn’t just stand there and do nothing.” Lindbergh said. “We”? Charley asked with a raised eyebrow. Koala cut in. “Yes, Lindbergh wasn’t the only one alone in saving you. Along with him there was our medical and science team as well as the rest of the Revs contributing in some way.” Koala said. “When we were reviving you Belo Betty stormed into the operating room and used her cheer cheer devil fruit to aid in your fight for life.” Lindbergh said. “Well it's clear that her efforts weren’t lost, I owe Betty and the others for saving me too.” Charley said. “There’s also one more person that was involved in saving you, if it wasn’t for her we would’ve never found you.” Koala said. “Hana”. Charley said with a warm smile. Both Lindbergh and Koala nodded their heads in agreement. “Can I see her”? Charley asked. “ You can but you should really be back in bed.” Koala scolded Charley for his earlier shenanigans. “Yeah, sorry about that, I just had a little freak out.” Charley said with a sheepish grin. “I can go and bring her to you if you’d like, just as long as you promise to get some rest.” Koala said. “I promise, Barricade Scouts honor”! Charley said. Charley realized what he had just sputtered out and looked at the confused faces of Koala and Lindbergh. “Um..” Charley stuttered. “Shit, the Barricade Scouts didn’t exist until after the war, c’mon Charley think of something.” Charley told himself. “Barricade Scouts? What’s that”? Lindbergh asked. “It, its what me and my friends call our little group.” Charley said nervously. Lindbergh and Koala seem to accept this answer.

“Well why don’t I help you back into bed while Koala goes and gets your friend”? Lindbergh said. “Sounds good, thank you.” Charley replied. “I’ll go and get your friend then.” Koala said. As she headed out the door Lindbergh offered Charley to use his shoulder as a crutch, the younger Mink took the older ones offer and slowly hopped back to bed. “I’m sure you’re getting tired hopping around like that.” Lindbergh said as he pulled out a long case of some kind.  “So…Why don’t we fix that.” Lindbergh said as he popped open the case. Inside was a mechanical steampunk artificial leg. Charley stared in awe at the device. “You made this Lin? It looks remarkable.” Charley said. “Aw, shucks kid, this is just child’s play compared to my other works, like your heart for instance.” Lindbergh said pointing to the glow in Charley’s chest. “Or Project: Minuteman”? Charley added on. Lindbergh froze solid on the spot, dropping the leg in the process. Silence filled the air once again for a brief moment before Lindbergh spoke. “H..How do you know about that? Lindbergh asked shocked. Charley took careful thought to this question, one wrong word and he could be gone forever. “I don’t know about it, only its name from an acquaintance of yours.” Charley replied. “Who”? Lindbergh asked. “I can’t say, they wish to remain anonymous.” Charley said. “Charley, I need to know who told you about Project: Minuteman. It is a super secret top project I've been working on to help end this war before it goes too far. If anyone like the World Government or one of the Yonko gets their hands on it the lives of the people will be in great danger.” Lindbergh said in a serious tone of voice. Charley thought about telling Lindbergh the truth. It was very risky and there was a high probability that Lindbergh would think he was crazy but Charley needed to find out what Project: Minuteman was. If it could save the wasteland and make a better tomorrow for Sugar and the others than the risk was worth it. He just had to approach this right.

“Morley was the one who told me.” Charley said. Charley could hear inaudible grumbling from Lindbergh. In truth Morley had been the one to mentioned Lindbergh’s project, it just wasn’t the Morley Lindbergh was familiar with. Morley didn’t know much about it rather that it was something Lindbergh thought could change the tides of war. “Wait, how do you even know Morley”? Lindbergh asked. Charley took a deep breath in. “This is it, Goda help me.” Charley silently prayed. “As of right now Morley doesn’t know me, I’m not from here and when I say I’m not from here I’m not talking about being from a different island or even a different sea. I’m from a different time, a long time away from now. I know that sounds completely insane and worthy of having me thrown  into an insane asylum but I can show you proof”! Charley said.  Charley picked up his SEAHORSE that Lindbergh had placed on the nightstand and placed it in the older Minks hands. “Your tech savvy right? You should know about the developments Sea-Tech has been making, one of which is the Sustainable Electric Assisting Hazardous Obstacles Reliable Survival Equipment or SEAHORSE for short. If I’m correct about what point of time I’m in then they have only just developed the prototypes.” Charley stated. Lindbergh sat there in utter silence, his attention being fully taken by the SEAHORSE he was holding. Charley could tell from Lindbergh’s facial expression that the older Mink was trying to process everything. “This looks much more advanced than the recent Mark 1, even the in development Mark II and rumored Mark III.” Lindbergh barely whispered. Charley wanted to feel some comfort that Lindbergh was questioning how the younger Mink could have a super advanced model of a recently developed tech, but Charley couldn’t get ahead of himself. He had to fully sell the older Mink on his authenticity. Charley reached out and undid the latch on the SEAHORSE. Lindbergh looked at him. “Go ahead, give it a spin.” Charley said smiling. Lindbergh looked like a child on Christmas morning, if said child was hyped up on sugar and had gotten an entire candy store plus a pony as their present. Lindbergh eagerly strapped the device on his arm. It took the device a minute to process Lindbergh’s information but as soon as it finished processing Lindbergh eagerly flipped through the tabs of the device. Even through the goggles, Charley could see Lindbergh’s eyes sparkle in wonder meant. “This device is remarkable! So many functions; item organization, vitals tracking,  a world's map, radio, Geiger counter, and is that a Multiple Assisting Target System?” Lindbergh asked enthusiastically.   Charley waited patiently for Lindbergh, hoping the older Mink would notice a very special feature of the device. “It even comes with a security identification system”! Lindbergh said before pausing. “Wait, security identification? Then how am I able to use this unless.” “Were related to each other.” Charley cut in. Lindbergh stood there in disbelief, stunned at the revelation before him. Charley spoke up. “Lindbergh I know this is a lot to take in and I can’t really go into detail about what’s going on, heck I’m already taking a risk as it is just revealing the SEAHORSE to you.” Charley said. “Kid.” Was all that Lindbergh was able to say. “Its just that the place I’m from could really use a second chance and if your project can help me and the other Revs then we…”Charley was interrupted abruptly by a sudden hug from Lindbergh. “I’m so sorry Charley, I’m so sorry we screwed the future up for you.” Lindbergh said shakily. Charley hugged the older Mink back. “Don’t be sorry Lin, you might just be the one to get us out of this mess.” Charley said. “ No kid, if anyone is going to save the future it's you. As far as I know I have to just let time take its course and flow with the current, otherwise I could end up erasing the world’s best hope at a better tomorrow.” Lindbergh said. The two nodded at each other in agreement, from this point forward it was up to Charley and his friends to fight for the future. “So, about Project: Minuteman.” Lindbergh started.

Happy Worldbuilding Wednesday! Tell us about travel. Are there unique dangers on the road, special sights to see? How do people normally get around? How likely is the average person to travel? Is it particularly dangerous, or quite common?

Unique dangers, yes of course!

Bandits, lizard dogs if you’re up near the Wastelands, sites of twisted magic, other predators, natural disasters and exposure, stuff like that.

Special sights, probably! Ruins, natural beauty like rivers or mountains or the ocean, man made wonders like sprawling cities or beautiful temples.

People normally get around by foot, cart, or horse! If you’re practiced in gold/ritual magic, or you’re on good terms with someone who is, you may be able to teleport.

The average person isn’t likely to travel at all! Beyond farming folk making a trip to the next town to sell or trade, travel isn’t common at all. It’s dangerous, time consuming, people don’t have the skills or knowledge necessary, and often don’t have the time to take away from whatever work they do for a living.

The exception to this is the Riders, the Pony Express-ish mail delivery system.

I just sent this message through the Tumblr Help Center since @staff doesn’t care about actually reading comments on their posts. I refuse to go down without a fight.

I strongly urge staff to reconsider their new censorship route. I, and literally every single other user on this site, feel like this situation is not being competently handled. Your entire user platform is being punished because you do not want to properly handle the actual issues on this site. Allow me to explain in further detail below, because it seems that no one over at Tumblr headquarters seems to be able to grasp why this new censorship is wrong.

People have formed friendships, built communities, created safe spaces, and now you’re going to take all of that away from them because you think all sex and nudity is bad? Tumblr is not addressing the actual issues here. Instead, loyal users who have been on here for years are being punished. Instead of targeting the porn bots, nazis, pedophiles, rapists, etc, you are punishing innocent people who come on here for self-expression. Do you think any of us care when we have to scroll past a gif of people having sex? No, we don't. We care about the porn bots in the comments, or being followed by a blog with links like "Hook up with 18 year old girls here."

Listen, I've had to scroll past some furry and My Little Pony porn that I hope I never have to see again, but I, like most users, scroll past these posts and then are done with them. Who exactly are those things hurting anyway? At most, someone may be uncomfortable for a few seconds, but then they continuing scrolling and see other stuff and all is well again. I can say with 100% confidence that I am more bothered by the Republican blogs I see all the damn time making degrading posts about women than seeing someone's naked body. Posts degrading women = harmful. Human with a body ≠ harmful.

For anything and anyone to be successful, they must listen to feedback. This is crucial to their survival. None of us here are being listened to. We were ignored when we constantly complained about the porn bots, and then months later Tumblr said they didn't know about it. YOU WERE TOLD. YOU WERE TOLD 1000S OF TIMES. Then the situation got so bad where the app was taken off of the Apple store, then you were forced to stop ignoring the problem. If the situation had been addressed early on, you wouldn't be about to witness the downfall of your website, a downfall that in the end you will only have yourself to blame for. A majority of users are already planning on abandoning Tumblr once this goes into full-effect. Pretty much all of us have posted or reblogged something at some point that you now deem "inappropriate". And I must add that as a woman and as someone with an Art degree, I am completely appalled at the use of "female presenting nipples." People are not allowed to sexually express themselves but Tumblr staff is allowed to be sexist? You walk into the religious section of any museum and I can guarantee you that you will see Jesus's mother Mary's breasts and nipples. If in the 1500's this was perfectly okay, why in 2018 are we saying women's breasts are bad and inappropriate? We are supposed to be advancing, not taking steps back.

In Jeff's statement, he said that "Our actions are out of love and hope for our community." I think it's pretty obvious that this statement is untrue. If anyone over at Tumblr Headquarters actually cared about this community, they would not be going to these extremes. Once again, I urge you to do something else, something more productive, something that targets the actual issues instead of hurting every user on this site. Listen to what your users are saying, or witness your site become a desolate wasteland. The choice is yours.

Funny enough, this does happen in my version of Fo4. Courier 6 crosses the country, essentially trying to reestablish the Pony Express.

Glad I’m not the only one who had this idea!

Ada:

Finds Courier Six quite impressive, and even more so once she hears their harrowing tales of woe out west. She’ll ask Sole if she can hang out occasionally with Courier Six, to learn some combat tips from them. They also have plenty of interesting stories to share, and Ada’s a sucker for those.

Cait:

Loves Courier Six, and would probably protect them with her life. Not that they needed her added protection, of course. The Courier is so badass, and even made it across the whole damn Wasteland! 3,000 miles of hell, and this dipwad succeeded? After being shot in the head? Fuck yeah, this is the kind of person Cait wants to know. 

Cait also takes some combat lessons from Courier Six, as they know a few dirty fighting tricks even Cait doesn’t know. 

Codsworth:

Treats Courier Six like any other guest of Sole. He’s polite, and enjoys hearing their various stories! Codsworth also tries to tell some jokes, as the Courier looks like they haven’t laughed in years…

Failing that, Fancy Lads Snackcakes are sure to bring a smile to their face!

Curie:

Is amazed that Courier Six took a bullet to the head and survived with minimal problems. She wants to hear all the details, to write up a medical study! Once the Courier has humored her and complied, Curie simply is awestruck by their presence. She’s also a bit scared, as the Courier is clearly quite capable in combat…

The Courier does their best to put her at ease, though, and is willing to answer any questions she has.

Danse:

Is impressed with Courier Six for all the daring things they’ve done. Danse thinks of them like another soldier, with their discipline and skills... Even if they’re technically a glorified mailman. He loves trading stories with the Courier, as he’s seen plenty of shit himself. Danse and the Courier do teach each other a few fighting skills, and overall they seem to become good friends.

Deacon:

He’s tempted to claim that Courier Six is full of shit for saying they traveled cross-country and survived a bullet to the head, among other things... but he knows what lying looks like, and the Courier’s face says it all. Deacon is blown away by all the cool stories the Courier has, and he’ll embellish his own experiences to seem on-par with the ‘badass mailman’. He would anyways, he just adds a bit more detail trying to compete.

Loves hanging out with the Courier— they go drinking together occasionally.

Dogmeat:

Another kind human that Sole introduces him to! He loves Courier Six, because they pet him loads. They also give him a toy, occasionally! Who wouldn’t love someone so nice? 

Dogmeat nearly sprains his tail by wagging it too hard when he sees Courier Six again.

Hancock:

He’s wary at first, as this person seems a tad… off. They’re a cowboy yeehaw mailman, for fuck’s sake. And they look unstable.��

Then again, who isn’t off and unstable in this world...? 

Once Sole assures him that Courier Six isn’t gonna shank him while he’s asleep, Hancock warms up slightly to the Courier. They swap stories and usually can be seen downing ale and/or doing chems, talking about their respective experiences. It appears to be a tentative friendship, but they sure have the same zest for life!

Longfellow:

Is happy to finally meet the famous Courier Six— he’s heard a few tales about them, even all the way over in Far Harbor. He’s impressed by how the Courier made it across the whole damn Wasteland, and is glad to learn some combat & tracking tricks even he, wily old Longfellow, didn’t know. He shares some of his precious booze with them, and the two kindle a lasting friendship full of danger and excitement. And alcohol. Courier 6 definitely didn’t give Longfellow bottles of aged liquor from the southwest.

MacCready:

Impressed with how the Courier didn’t die after getting shot in the head— being a merc, he knows how headshots usually go. Living ain’t it.

He enjoys hearing their stories, and tells his own in return. MacCready also teaches the Courier some sniping tips, and they educate him in knife combat. It’s something he’s always wanted to get better at.

It’s a mutually beneficial friendship, one that they both enjoy very much.

Nick Valentine:

He’s skeptical of how much the Courier really survived, but slowly comes to believe them as he gets to know them. He tells the Courier many stories of his detective life, and in return, Courier Six tells him about their own past. Nick and the Courier enjoy an occasional smoke-and-chat, sharing information with each other. Nick is really curious about the lands out west, and the Courier wants to hear about the Commonwealth.

It’s the type of friendship where they don’t hang out often, but are best friends. 

Piper:

Inundates Courier Six with questions— what’s New Vegas like, how’s life as a delivery person, are they single, how was the trip out, etc. The Courier is happy enough to tell stories, and Piper is quite impressed with how much shit the Courier has lived through. They have a few drinks together, and talks about their respective tales of danger! 

It’s a pretty solid friendship, even if Piper does ask a million questions. 

And occasionally she annoys the shit out of them. Oh well.

Porter Gage:

Thinks the Courier is the coolest mofo in the world. He’s impressed by their fighting skills, but offers to teach them some of his own special, dirty-fighting tactics. The Courier agrees, and teaches him some tricks he’d never seen before! Gage enjoys the occasional story from the Courier, but as he doesn’t like talking much, limits it to two per week.

It’s a tentative alliance, but the Courier grows on Gage quickly.

Preston:

He’s fascinated by Courier Six’s life. They survived so much, and then decided to up and travel over 3,000 miles? Pretty damn impressive! Preston looks up to the Courier, but the Courier also looks up to Preston. This is a (welcome) surprise for the Minuteman. They share stories, and help each other with their respective problems. Swapping advice often, they’re pretty much inseparable.

Preston and the Courier are fast friends— even if the Courier is a bit rough around the edges, they’re a great person and friend!

Strong:

Finds it strange how Courier Six wanted to travel the big Wasteland, actually did so, and didn’t die two hours in. He thinks the Courier is tough (for a human, at least). Strong finds some of the Courier’s more violent tales interesting, but for the most part, he doesn’t interact with them too much. 

X6-88:

Isn’t sure how to feel about Courier Six at first. Yes, they claim to have survived all these crazy things, and supposedly made it all the way from New Vegas. But damn, the Courier sure knew their way around weapons! Even if it seems like some of the Courier’s stories are fake, X6-88 hears them out anyways. He shares his own tales, and the Courier lets him know that ‘they all sound fake too’. Annoyed, but not surprised, X6-88 calls a ‘truce’.

They don’t hang out much, but if they do, they tend to mod weapons and whatnot together.
