the venus cycle, lovingly nicknamed "vgb" (vee gets bitches) is the trilogy my wife @deadhorse77 and i are writing together. it centers on a strange town where, when new people arrive, they completely forget that they were ever from anywhere else, and their history molds itself to fit the city. it's also about a bunch of trans people who all kinda suck in their own way and end up in the worlds worst polycule, with one shared daughter!
---
characters
vee/venus | they/them - one of the two narrating characters, they are the catalyst and the story begins with their arrival to the city. what they don't realize makes them special is that they remember their life beforehand, and instead they focus on situating themself in the lives of everyone they meet. with their arrival, the narrative dominos begin to fall. also, they're a whore and get involved with everyone else.
the chronicler | he/him - immensely private, TC keeps his name hidden from everyone. the other narrating character, he seeks to puzzle out the mystery of the city. while he doesn't have any personal memory of his life before the city, he's aware of the effects it has on its inhabitants memory. additionally, he's prone to stalking the "people of interest" of the city, trying to figure out what their role in the story is. loserly academic vibes, like a jon sims who doesn't even have the archives going for him. he has the looks of a depressed english professor and the soul of a whore for fucking real. paris | he or she (not simultaneously) - titled the scholar by TC, paris is a nosy bitch who wants to know everything about everything and everyone--and knows pretty damn close to it. part fairy, and takes advantage of that extended lifespan to spend more time studying at the city college and to get into everyone's business. if you want to know something, paris is your fairy. also, he's genderfluid, swapping pronouns accordingly!
the oracle/sybil | fae/it - while the most obvious trait about it is faer gift of prophecy, sybil has many other skills, like being a bitch to basically everyone it meets. fae're the other fairy in our main cast, and sick to death of humans who want to get their futures seen.
jax | they/them - a member of the city police force, the detective is about as corrupt as it gets. they're violent, angry, and use their position of power to get away with everything. as an unfortunate blow to their credibility, they're also convinced that there's demons in the town, and that they'll be the one to catch one. also, they're down bad for the king.
the king | re/rem (he/they auxiliary) - like TC, the king keeps rheir name close to rheir chest, as well as a plethora of other secrets. from any surface level perception, the only things re cares about is gaining more money and more power within the city, as well as a certain member of rheir staff. don't look deeper than that, you probably won't like what you find.
the ram | arieself - part of what you'll find when you look deeper, the ram is the king's bodyguard. fully controlled by the king, air is rheir "pet project". immensely volatile and simultaneously a doormat in the face of the king's power. eventually, air will be able to come to terms with aries own power, but that time is far off still.
petra | they/them - said certain member of the king's staff, petra generally does not give a shit about the situations unfolding around them. they view most people on a spectrum of neutrality to dislike, and are deeply apathetic. also they have low empathy autist swag!
mama/eudora | any (written with just they/he/she for convenience) - eudora, fondly nicknamed "mama" by most, is the caretaker of the weeping girl, and a deeply caring person with a tendency to take lost souls under their wing. he's a mom friend to her core, and also? that's a fucking MILF babyyy!
the weeping girl | she/her - the heart of the city, though most don't know it. a very long time ago, she was cursed into becoming a statue, forever crying. the fountain her tears create has healing properties, and her slumbering life force shields the city from outside forces.
-
while none of these characters know it yet, with vee's arrival everything they've known is on the brink of change. lives will be destroyed by their fun and flirty personality (joke + reference)
---
relationships
here's the relationship quilt, because everything is too complicated for a normal chart (it's read in rows, so the first row is how vee feels about the people in each column, second row is tc, etc) ("spade" refers to the concept of kismesis from homestuck)
Tumblr media
---
asked and answered
on the ram
on paris and tc
on vee as the catalyst
on tc
on paris and jax
---
anyways please ask the both of us about this. we love to talk about it and we have such a beautiful autism about our ocverse.

Chapter 01: So it Begins
It was becoming unbearingly obvious to her by now (July the 1st), that this year was not turning out like everybody hoped for. To begin with, she never in her most wild dreams imagined she would be in Gotham City during summer vacation.
This year had started fine for Marinette and her friends (such a presumptuous thing to say way too early into the new year).
Marinette was quickly proved wrong back in February when everything started to go downhill. It was a couple of days before Saint Valentine’s Day, at night, it was getting close to golden hour and instead of being asleep she was finishing the embroidering of a commission.
At some point, Plagg phased into her room yelling: “Pigtails! Pigtails!” he had shouted frantically,  “we need you, hurry. You’ve gotta see my kit! Hurry.”
Right there, she dropped everything without thinking twice, transformed into Ladybug, and followed Plagg to wherever her partner was. Knowing well the outcome of what would happen as soon as they met with Chat Noir.
Not much time later, they found Adrien crouched in an obscure alley,  puking blood and a dark gooey matter. The evidence of a curse. The author of such a thing couldn’t be other than Le Papillon.
She sent a letter to her family in Shanghai about the situation, since Master Fu was retired, and her family (in the magic business) was well-known for their magicians specialized in healing. It was only a matter of waiting or so Marinette thought. Her great-grandmother surely would call her anytime soon.
During the first weeks, Marinette foolishly thought it was because they had a bigger emergency that required all of their attention. But the days passed and then the weeks turned into a month, and another, and then, it was May.
According to her cousin, in the business, the magical business there were some troubles with some partners. Which was why her family was being so quiet.
So, as a summary, it didn’t matter to any of them that Paris was constantly continuously spiraling away from the little grasp she had or that their young relative was awful with that type of magic despite being the champion of the Goddess of Creation.
Back at the beginning of March, a box appeared in her room. It had the seal of the family, a even smaller box with a bunch of ingredients (in an even smaller box), a thin book with edible spells, and a note that read:
LanYing
In the book you will find numerous potions, to help the champion of the Black Cat Kwami, as well as instructions to follow.
There was no explanation given, and it was barely something yet Marinette made the best out of it.
That’s when the news about the Wayne Gala started to sound, first from Chloé who started to boast in the school about going with her mom to the gala.
Jagged Stone, the rockstar that proclaimed himself her uncle, delivered an invitation to a concert he was to hold in Gotham City, and to the gala as well. He said the Bruce Wayne was curious about meeting Marinette. Who, according to her uncle, was the only sensible person around his age and of course worth the time back in his hometown.
The events were going to take two weeks between each of them, meaning, she would be losing half her summer vacations in Gotham City and not  spending it in Shanghai like usual.
Her great-grandmother agreed to let her go.
Adrien proposed a plan to ask for help in Gotham, after he noticed that they both were going to Gotham City. Seeing that the Bat Clan were the local vigilantes, they could ask them to help with detective work.
Even though she had almost lost hope when it came to getting help with the curse, at last her great-grandmother did something for her. Adrien was to come to the residency in Shanghai, to receive some kind of treatment under the pretext of visiting his cousin.
.
And so four months had gone by, the commissions were finished and delivered, and the items for the auction as well.
Before leaving Paris, Marinette was assigned a mission alongside Kim.
At the moment, now June, she was cursing at herself about wearing a sleeveless knitted vest as a top. Fate was being such a pain as of lately, it decided to make her feel helpless in every situation she put up with.
Her uncle Jagged was received by a mob of fans, which on its own was odd considering that the date of his arrival wasn’t made public. Or that Jagged’s security didn’t do a fine job when they dealt with this mob.
Night was starting to fall down in Bristol, her phone was dead,  and Marinette had no phone charger on her.
So, while Marinette was sure she was somewhere in Bristol. That place wasn’t  even close to the airport because instead of staying put in the airport, she tried to run after the limousine that was taking Jagged, Penny, Luka, and Juleka away from her.
Thanks to that, she wasn’t sure her identity as MDC was safe for much longer. If only she hadn’t kept so adamant on it, she would be together with them and no: cold, lost, tired, and hungry.
The air was terribly chilly, and the vest she was wearing didn’t help a bit.
Luckily, she found a place that provided rest to her exhausted body, a small cafè with a warm and creamy color palette.
“So, what’s next?” Tikki pointed her spoon at her. Once they settled down,
They were in the less lit area of the place, being seen wasn’t a worry for them.
“I could ask for a phone?” Marinette took a sip of her lemonade, “I have my sketchbook with me, and contact info too.”
“Unless you want to spend the night outside, yes, you should.”
Marinette stuck her tongue out at the deity.
Competitiveness was deeply ingrained into her and not even talking with a goddess bound to her pocket-size form could stop her from having the last word.
Tikki  rolled her eyes but didn’t complain about it, she still had half of her cheesecake  to finish.
Eventually, after Marinette had found enough courage to ask the waiter for a phone, she called her uncle Jagged. It was only a matter of waiting ‘til somebody came for her.
Meanwhile, she asked for another slice of pay, to kill the time and her anxiety if possible.
The bell rang. It was a boy with teal highlights, Luka was accompanied by another boy who stood  outside of the café, then he went through the door.
“Marinette?” he asked.
She was saved from sleeping in the streets of Gotham.
Marinette got back to her feet, too quickly to the point of almost kissing the ground in the process.  Her face burned with embarrassment and she dusted her jeans off.
The reeling of an aura caught her attention, whoever it belonged to was outside so it must be from the boy that came in with Luka.
“ Hi ,” she said.
It wasn’t much of a surprise when she received a hug from her cousin, the worry radiated off of him.
“ How did you even get here ?” Luka started to inspect her.
Marinette scoffed, “ I’ve probably run out of luck for the week, ” she answered instead of replying to his question.
Luka smiled at her, pleased that she  looked fine and let go of the embrace.
“Let’s get out.” Luka said, “Need a hand with your things?”
Marinette’s brain was running wild because of the boy behind Luka. Of course the mission wasn’t going to be her only worry during this trip.
She shook her head, and took her purse to follow Luka.
It was weirding her out, his presence was familiar. It reminded her of the damp evenings in her second home, of the color green, of their visits, and of the uncomfortable feeling of the prickling under her skin they caused.
It was different. It could represent danger though, if he knows who she is.
The bell rang once more as they crossed the door.
He looked about her age, half a head shorter than Luka,  his hair was dark, brown skin, and unnatural green eyes. A relative of them, most likely.
In summary, he was pretty cute.
“So, Damian, this is Marinette. Since my dad said he’s her uncle she’s my cousin,” Luka started to introduce them, “and Mari, this is Damian. He’s the one that bit my arm last time I visited.”
That earned a glare and a punch on the arm from Damian, and the soft mumbles ‘ow, ow, yeah I deserved that.’
“Huh? Ah, that was you?” Marinette chuckled.
Damian rolled his eyes, and crossed his arms,“he did deserve to be bitten.”
“Never said he didn’t. He was probably being really annoying or something.”
“Okay, we should tell everyone that we picked up Marinette,” Luka said.
Damian wordlessly took his phone out to show off his screen, with a smug smirk, “beat you to it.”
In retaliation, Luka showed him the middle finger.
“Shouldn’t we get going?” Marinette asked hesitantly.
Both boys nodded, Damian started to lead them to wherever the car was parked, according to the boy  it was a reasonable walking distance from them. Unfortunately, the weather had only gotten colder as the sun went down.
For Marinette the chilly wind was starting to permeate into her bones.
“Did you bring sweaters for this trip?” Damian asked.
Marinette blinked. “I did. I just didn’t think of having one with me because my plans were to sleep until dinner. Why?”
“Because.”
She heard the sound of the fabric of Damian’s jacket rustle a little as they kept walking  on the sidewalk, of course she didn’t think much about it until it was thrown over her, “don’t take it off. You must be freezing.”
Luka chuckled, earning the startled stare of one Marinette and the deep scowl of one Damian.
“What?” Luka grinned wider.
Damian glared at him, “let’s just hurry.”
💛💛💛
Juleka and Damian’s friend, Jon, were waiting for them at the park. It was poorly illuminated, there were no people to be seen around. Damian took the remote key out of one of his pockets, and unlocked the doors.
Juleka glued herself to Marinette’s side, “I’m glad you’re okay. Alya will kill me if something happens to you.” Juleka said half-jokingly.
Marinette started to giggle.
“Alya? Don’t be silly, she can’t .”  Marinette said frowning yet the mental image of her best friend strangling Juleka made her smile,  “but that won't stop her from trying. Let's hope Lady Wi-fi doesn't happen.”
Luka huffed at that, “only if  Nino and Kim don’t try first.”
“Probably. Oh hey, you must be Damian’s friend Jonathan?” she turned  her face to see the purple eyed teen.
“Yeah, his best friend, call me Jon please. Nice to meet you and  I’m glad you’re okay Marinette,” he smiled at her.
“Thanks!”
The rest of the trip to the manor went on swiftly, small talk was almost futile as everyone —namely, the Parisians — was too worn out. Marinette and Juleka fell asleep on their way and so did Jon after them.
“So, what prompted you to lend Mari your jacket?” Luka asked, eyes glued on his phone.
“TT.” was all Damian replied.
“Okay.”

Dwelling on Dreams by @the-sinking-ship
Rated E. 136k. Drarry
Draco thought he could avoid Potter for the duration of his brief return to England. He’d stick to his schedule and be back home in Paris, where he belonged, in a few short months. No trouble at all. He had plenty to occupy him, what with the opening of the London branch of his successful apothecary, his innovative research, drinks with Pansy, a backlog of unread potions periodicals. Except Head Auror Potter is everywhere — in Draco's chair, at his door, in his dreams. All six feet of motorbike-riding, combat-boot-wearing, sex-hair-sporting Saviour of the World packed into one unfairly fetching uniform. Potter won’t leave Draco the bloody hell alone, won’t let him breathe, let him forget, let him sleep. Because no matter how fast Draco Malfoy runs, Harry Potter is always hot on his heels.
A Kiss to Build a Dream On By @drarrily-we-row-along
Rated E. 23k. Drarry
Coming out of the war, Harry and Draco are both a little messed up. (Well, more than a little messed up if they're being honest, but no one is interested in that.) The first time it happens, they're making out and having sex in the alley behind the bar they both find themselves in, but that's just the beginning. Assigned as partners, once they become aurors, Draco finds himself drawn into Harry over and over again, in spite of the fact that he knows this can't last. How could it? Harry Potter, Savior of the Wizarding World and Draco Malfoy, Death Eater. It's preposterous.
Doxie Blood by @quietlemonhush

Sirius thinks he’ll never say it, and then he does.
Remus forces the issue of the safe word. He starts out patient, with logical reason. A safe word lets me trust that you want to keep going. A safe word ensures I never hurt you. A safe word keeps us both safe. Sirius fights him on every point, so finally Remus arches an eyebrow and walks away, and the next time Sirius tries to kiss him, he disapparates. Until we have a safe word, every word is no, Remus says.
So they have a safe word.

Rated E. 115k. Drarry
Harry joins the Hogwarts staff as the new History of Magic Professor, while Draco has already been teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts for the past year. When Samantha, a first year, is being bullied one day and throws a made-up Truth curse at her harasser, only to accidentally hit Harry instead, Harry becomes cursed to tell the truth, and not only that, he has to regularly tell it to Draco Malfoy. Samantha is clearly gifted, maybe the most powerful witch or wizard to ever come through Hogwarts, and yet she has no idea how to take the curse off. As they work to remove it—and also teach Samantha how to control a power that's becoming more dangerous by the day—will Harry's truths become too much to handle? And will whatever’s going on with Draco just make everything exponentially worse?

La Danse des Âmes
@tmvoldemort, continued from here: X
The vast marble hall was lit by white taper candles. Their light bounced off mirrors and crystals, setting the world into a golden shine. A temple to wealth and influences set in a Rococo finished. There, looking cozy with a socialite was the Minister from France. Trying to keep up with her more dance savvy partner was the fame MACUSA Auror.  Each guest donned a mask. Some had a theme going among them. A Merlin here. Morgana with her date in a Raven mask. A pair with matching silver and gold gilded masks. More than most went with Venina styles. All unaware of the interloper.   Slithering between the throne. His gaze was limited by his plain mask.  How safe they believe themselves to be, Voldemort thought. Foolish to allow masks. Not when a group dons them to wage war against them. Still a few sense something off about it. They shiver as Voldemort slithers by. A chill of moral danger. But Voldemort wasn’t here for them. Spying his intended overlooking the dance floor on a balcony. He came up from behind her. Smelling the fragrant she wore on her neck. Merging into her slight shadow.  Leaning over to whisper in her ear; “Mademoiselle you are not dancing. Surely your date has not abandoned you? Least for someone else to take your fancy.”
Had it been any other soirée dansante in Paris, Nagini would have felt exposed and vulnerable and dread would have clung to her like a second skin. Over the course of her wretched life as an Underbeing, she had seen too much to entertain the delusion that she belonged for a mere instant, not when she was acutely aware of the wand she was barred from carrying, of the power, dignity, and agency she thus lacked compared to the witches and wizards surrounding her.
The relative anonymity granted by masquerade balls such as the one she attended that night did not dispel her discomfort in its entirety, yet at the very least, she did not feel quite as naked with her features concealed behind a plain mask of sufficiently convincing faux silver.
There had been rumors that Credence would be there – or rather Corvus Lestrange, the boy who had (mercifully) died in Credence’s stead and who was still falsely rumored to be his true identity.
Expecting to be dismissed a second time without a glance back, Nagini foolishly found herself aching to know he was at least all right, that – despite her fear and disapproval of Grindelwald and his pureblood supporters – he had found a home, the sense of belonging she had been unable to offer.
Minutes of discretely surveying the masked crowd from her vantage point on a balcony, however, soon turned into two agonizing hours, and despite knowing that her chances of finding him her had been infinitesimal at best, her heart nonetheless sank at her inability to detect a whiff of his familiar scent, the hint of ash and charcoal emanating from his pores.
‘Half an hour,’ she decided. ‘I will stay for another half an hour, but then, I’ll give up.Leave before they notice I’m not one of them.’
But then, all of a sudden, there was a subtle shift in the air, a lone masked wizard weaving his way through the crowd, who was different from the others, different and infinitely more dangerous.
It was evident that even those not cursed with a beast’s enhanced senses intuitively responded to that truth, shivering and angling their torsi so as to facilitate his passage.
It was with a vehement surge of dread that Nagini realized that the stranger was heading towards her, pinning her in place with his eyes alone.
She couldn’t move a single muscle, overwhelmed by the dizzying assault on her senses.
His deep, melodious voice caressed her ear in a tantalizing whisper; the pitch-black magic he exuded ensnared her, its distinct flavor rich on her tongue like expensive dark chocolate.
Nagini had to summon every ounce of her willpower to adopt an air of stoicism.
“I apologize for the misunderstanding, Monsieur, but I’m an interpreter, not a guest,” she lied, her tone polite yet distant. “As my employer no longer requires my services, I intend to take my leave.”
Despite the wariness and caution ingrained in her every bone, Nagini found herself lingering for just another moment, granting the enigmatic stranger an opportunity to persuade her otherwise.

Daminette December Day 5- Storybook/ Mayhem
@maribat-calendar-events
As Damian stepped off the plane, chaos greeted him. Wolves and fairies, pirates and angels, characters from a countless number of stories ran around. It didn’t take the world’s greatest detective to figure out that it was the work of an akuma. But what bothered Damian was how out of control the situation had become. The further he walked into Paris amidst the mayhem, the more he discovered the extent of the problem; nearly every citizen had been turned into a storybook character.
The more he saw, the faster he raced to the 21st arrondissement. The only explanation for why Paris was in such a state was that Marinette was in trouble. As he raced by, he saw castles and magical flowers, houses of gingerbread and giant shoes. In all honesty, the scenery would have made him nauseous if he had time to think, but fears for Marinette consumed his thoughts.
It seemed like eons, although it was probably no more than an hour before Damian arrived in front of what used to be Sabine and Tom’s patisserie. Now it was a giant tower, covered in thorns. Thankfully, Damian had enough foresight to observe first before rushing in. A couple of minutes went by when a knight ran up to the tower. While the knight attempted to enter the tower, two foes suddenly appeared from within the former patisserie.
A queen, with a dress of roses and thorns and a beast. No doubt Sabine and Tom, who had been affected by the akuma.
The knight steps forward announcing his purpose. “What ho! I have cometh to save thy cursed princess. Do thou be the monster I must slayest?” It seemed like the affected citizens were dedicated to playing out their role in the storybook. Although Sabine and Tom didn’t seem keen on talking as they quickly dispatched and beat the knight, Sabine by controlling the roses and Tom with brute strength. Two sentinels protecting the tower.
The short bout did confirm a few things for Damian. The first of which was that Marinette was in the tower. The second was that she was afflicted by the akuma before she could transform into Ladybug, or else Tom and Sabine wouldn’t be so protective. It also meant he couldn’t get in through the front door. Luckily, he always carried a grappling gun with him.
It took a bit of maneuvering but thankfully, the tower wasn’t impossibly tall, it let him reach a lone balcony facing the Seine. And on that balcony was Marinette as a princess, just like he suspected it would be. Not wanting to get the attention of her parents, or the akuma he whispered to her. “Marinette, you need to transform into Ladybug.”
Marinette acted a bit startled at the sudden appearance of a person on her balcony but she took it surprisingly well. “Ladybug? I’m not quite sure I know what you mean, grim stranger.” Her eyes seemed cloudy as if she wasn’t all there.
A sigh of exasperation left Damian’s mouth, it was just his luck that she wouldn’t remember anything. “Marinette, my name is Damian. I’ve come to help you. Do you have a pair of earrings on you by chance.”
“Ah, of course! You’re the knight meant to break my curse!” Marinette looked excited. “Now I won’t have to suffer anymore.”
The conversation was getting him nowhere. If she didn’t know where the earrings were, he couldn’t borrow them to transform. His only option was to play along. “Yes, I’ve come to break the curse. What is your curse, and what do I have to do in order to break it.”
“The curse?” Marinette didn’t say anything for a long time. “I’m not sure what the curse is, just that I am cursed. But it’s very simple to break. Like all curses, it can be broken with true love’s kiss.” She looked at him expectantly.
Was that all? A kiss? It seemed simply enough, but it felt wrong for some reason. And then it hit him that this wasn’t the solution to their problem. “Why do you need me to save you, Marinette?”
“What?”
“The Marinette I fell in love with never needed saving from me or anyone else, so why is it different for you, Princess Marinette?”
“Well, that’s because a curse can’t be lifted by one person.”
“But who said you needed to be free of your ‘curse’?” Damian took her hands in his. “You were never cursed. Clumsy, certainly, but cursed? Never. The miraculous never cursed you, they simply let you become who you’re meant to be.” He gave her a reassuring smile, and she sent a timid one back.
“Are you sure? I mean, I usually tend to screw things up.” Damian knew she was almost there, she just needed one more push.
“I’m positive. You’re Ladybug and you always fix things.” The fog cleared from her eyes and she finally took stock of where she was.
“Damian?”
“Yes, Angel?”
“Thanks for saving me.”
“I only helped. I’m sure you would have made it on your own in the end.”
“Thanks anyways,” she leaned up and kissed his cheek. “I’ll see you later. Tikki! Spots on!” Taking on her usual role of a superhero, she left to go clean up the mayhem of the most recent akuma.

im too lazy to go back and find the number for book recs for the ask game but this is me asking for heist book recs hi hello
hell yeah. i have instantly forgotten everything i've ever read btw but here's what my brain will recall
Six of Crows, Leigh Bardugo
six criminals band together to break into the Ice Court (like breaking into the pentagon) and steal the creator of jurda parem, a drug that lets Grisha's (witches/magicians) power go full-throttle and become super dangerous. I love it soooo much, it's the first book in a duology, and it's just Neat, and i would die for Inej.
Little Thieves, Margaret Owen
This one is both a heist story and the consequences of a heist story. It has good quality heisting in it!! Summary, stolen from goodreads:
Vanja leads a lonely but lucrative double life as faux princess and jewel thief, charming nobility while emptying their coffers to fund her great escape. Then, one heist away from freedom, Vanja crosses the wrong god and is cursed to an untimely end: turning into jewels, stone by stone, for her greed.
Vanja has just two weeks to figure out how to break her curse and make her getaway. And with a feral guardian half-god, Princess Gisele's sinister fiancé, and an overeager junior detective on Vanja's tail, she'll have to pull the biggest grift yet to save her own life.
The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch
tbh i wasn't sure if it counted, i thought it might, but it's on some goodreads heist books lists. so. I will admit that the heisting in this one is more in the first and mostly takes the form of Locke being a sly con artist bastard toward rich people, but like. I love this book. it goes on the list. (Summary also yoinked from GR.)
An orphan’s life is harsh—and often short—in the mysterious island city of Camorr. But young Locke Lamora dodges death and slavery, becoming a thief under the tutelage of a gifted con artist. As leader of the band of light-fingered brothers known as the Gentleman Bastards, Locke is soon infamous, fooling even the underworld’s most feared ruler. But in the shadows lurks someone still more ambitious and deadly. Faced with a bloody coup that threatens to destroy everyone and everything that holds meaning in his mercenary life, Locke vows to beat the enemy at his own brutal game—or die trying.
The Gilded Wolves, Roshani Chokshi
my brain melts when i think about it (/pos, dw) so i'll just put this here:
It's 1889. The city is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. Here, no one keeps tabs on dark truths better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. When the elite, ever-powerful Order of Babel coerces him to help them on a mission, Séverin is offered a treasure that he never imagined: his true inheritance.
To hunt down the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin calls upon a band of unlikely experts. Together, they will join Séverin as he explores the dark, glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the course of history--but only if they can stay alive.

I just came here for a sec to scream about A Marvellous light. I’m so utterly delighted by this book; it’s sexy, it’s dangerous, it’s funny (and full of wit), it’s a good detective story, which can only be a plus.
Also it has an absolutely stunning couple, Robin and Edwin who came here from the mind of @fahye. Opposites attract one can say, but those two are not opposites; they are as different as they should be, and as similar as they can. In the beautiful story about magic, curses and Edwardian time, they fit perfectly… /some inappropriate comment, I’m so not past those 🔥 scenes/). They fit perfectly in the story itself.
I’m just going to fixate on this book for some time, unable to really read anything else, and dream of ever reaching the romantic heights of those 2 in my own book.
As pretty much always, I’m so grateful to Shakespeare & Company in Paris for putting this book on the shelf, exactly where I could find it.

BSD! OC! Tarou Edogawa | P2
He is often accompanied by his colleagues, mostly Kyoushi
He knows how to use a flip phone
Tarou claims people by first name basis
He is best friends/rivals with Kyouba and Vincent
He loves pulling the Aki-sama card
His mementos shadow has freckles and isn't too different in personality, except it goes on about knowing the future and can't wait for it to play out
In Paris, he and Kyoushi do private detective work and research into Hawkmoth
After Rogercop, Sabrina and her father start interning/working at the temporary agency
He often snacks on fruit
Tarou's Shadow sometimes replaces Yozo's cognition of him, both Tarou's and Yozo's Shadows seemingly having a close link
Ranpo meets Fukuzawa a few months after Tarou's death
Tarou doesn't realize the other Incarnates don't remember, mistaking Yozo for a Second instead of Third
Before joining the agency, Tarou and his brother lived in his school dorms
Afterwards, they both moved into the Tower's dormitory
When he's older, he cuts his brown hair into a tuft
-:Vincent vs Tarou:-
The Agency finds a mysterious letter at their office door addressed to 'The World's Most Greatest Detective'
(Having been delivered by Kit the raccoon)
Once hearing of this, Tarou immediately claims it, though this results in an argument in who it could be addressed to, only for Yozo to sigh at his Ability's activation, he confirms it is for Tarou
Tarou opens the letter and proceeds to solve a bunch of riddles to figure out it's contents
It details a location and a plus one invite, Tarou with no hesitation chooses their doctor, Takeo Kagami
-
At the location he has to solve a Rune puzzle to enter a room and they finally meet Vincent, who struggles to monolog only to give up and hand them a script
The rest of this scene goes similar to cannon
-
Tarou and Kagami get trapped in Vincent's fantasy mystery novel
Tarou is a traveling detective with tracker magic that manifests as discs
Kagami is a doctor with minor healing magic and a shield which she can use as a catalyst
Vincent is the 'magic-less' bartender and the murderer with teleportation magic
At least once, Vincent chuckles to himself while facing away from the investigation, while behind the bar
Still a locked room mystery with multiple deaths throughout the novel, including the doctor
Because of his lack of glasses, Tarou often misses things, showing that he has an actual need for them
The Ranpo-Glasses scene is replaced with Tarou's Butterfly Tie-Clip
During his time without his Tie-Clip, Tarou will often disassociate and loose himself in the character and therefore do things he would never normally do in the characters name, until Kagami's character's death
Upon receiving Kagami's butterfly ordainment, he snaps back into himself with his green eyes and solves the mystery the 'Tarou way'
Solveing the mystery involves outside knowledge from the Protagonist when they were a reader in the cursed library
--
Despite the two's rivalry, they had only recently met earlier in the year when Vincent was a guest author at Tarou's middle school
Tarou had gotten Vincent's signature that day, and later figured out the butterfly connection
-
During the Gifted War, the fight against Kamui is replaced with Nagisa
Tarou (as Syunnosuke) afterwards finds Atsushi and calls him out on being the traitor, only to get killed afterwards
Despite having an escape plan with Vincent, Atsushi stops holding back and kills Tarou in an instant, leaving Vincent too terrified to do or say anything
Atsushi then steals the Snake Miraculous for his Uncle Naoto

Two Cursed Detectives in Paris: Landing
Chasing down their suspect has lead Connor and Eerie, two detectives cursed with animal-like qualities, to France. There they find two kids madly in love with each other, even if they don't realize it yet. But with the help of two American detectives, love might just find a way...
Based on the Chouette! story and artwork that can be found here.
(If you haven't seen Chouette! before, then don't worry - I explain everything that matters for the plot.)
Hello and welcome to this fic that I have been very much looking forward to for the past month! I've been obsessed with Chouette since I first saw it in April of last year, so combining my two favorite obsessions into one gloriously fluffy fic felt only natural. And if I can get you to join me in this fledgling fandom, then I'll be absolutely thrilled!
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 (Final)
Enjoy!
Read on Ao3
Broadly speaking, she was cursed.
Although not in the sense that most people thought of when they heard the word “Cursed.” ‘Oh, my hair just won’t cooperate! I must be cursed!’ ‘My TV is flickering, it must be cursed!’
No, she really was cursed. If the talon-like nails, the head that swiveled three hundred and sixty degrees, and a host of other little abnormalities were anything to go off of, then probably cursed by the spirit of an owl. Or maybe she was possessed by an owl spirit? Honestly she had never been too clear on how it all worked despite living with it since middle school. It’s not like she’d been given a handbook or introductory pamphlet to help her through those first few rough months. Or the rough years that followed.
The ‘owl horns’ in her hair could be held down by her bow and the talons just looked like well manicured nails, but the red eyes and orange marking around her eyes like a mask were a dead give away. Not to mention the mossy green hair. At twenty two years old, it hadn’t been a long life so far, but it had certainly been full of struggle.
But that was who she was to the people who just saw her curse and decided not to look any further.
More specifically, she was Eerie. Eerie Escamilla, top of her class out of law school, junior detective and intern at the Cursed Special Unit, filled with people with a similar… background to her. A snore drew her attention to her left, toward one such person.
Connor MacThomas was cursed, like her, but with a raccoon rather than an owl. They hadn’t let him bring his favorite pillow with him into their first class seating, but he managed with his soft and bushy tail. She had to bite her lip to keep from aw’ing at the way his little raccoon ears twitched ever so slightly in his sleep. It wouldn’t do to be cooing at someone who was debatably her boss but unquestionably the more experienced detective between them.
Evidently, he could feel her eyes on him since he chose that moment to wake up. He yawned and stretched, his gloved hands grasping at the roof of the airplane. His hands were his greatest strength and his glaring weakness - so sensitive he could read the mood of a person by touch, which also made them so vulnerable he kept them in sturdy leather gloves worn thin by constant use.
His eyes, with their light blue sclera, opened up as he blinked at her, a bleary smile on his lips. Those eyes stood out all the more for the black mask, so similar to her own orange one, surrounding them. Another person might have thought that his crumbled, messy appearance was because he’d just spent the last five hours sleeping curled up on himself. But Eerie knew that was just how he always looked.
He adjusted himself, pulling down his shirt since it had ridden up a little. Her eyes followed the movement and she felt her cheeks heat up. Her heart fluttered and she quickly looked away, towards the window. A bad idea, given her fear of heights and suddenly her heart was fluttering for a different reason entirely. Her eyes widened and her breathing started to come in short bursts.
“Eerie?” Connor seemed to pick up on her panic quickly, if the concern in his voice was any indication. “Eerie. Boss. Look at me.” With a force of effort, she tore her eyes away from the window. “I didn’t pay much attention to the briefing. Why don’t you tell me about this mission?”
That was a blatant lie, but she was too grateful to call him out on it. She took a deep breath and gladly switched into lecture mode.
“We’ve been on this guy’s tail for the last couple months, picking apart his forgery operation back home.”
Connor grinned and stretched his hands. “Most of which was spent convincing rich people to let me get my paws all over their fancy but fake statues and busts.”
“And the rest of it was me doing meticulous art research,” Eerie said, rolling her eyes with a smirk.
“Of course, boss.” Connor didn’t break eye contact as he reached behind him to close the window with one hand. “And then what?”
“Well, I noticed that all the pieces had one thing in common - all the authentic ones are currently housed in the Louvre. And considering a lot of them aren’t even on display for the public-”
“Explaining why the fancy art people didn’t know they were being had.”
“-that means that the guy we’ve been after is in Paris, France and likely works at the Louvre. The local authorities have it up to their necks just trying to handle some crazy stuff happening in the French capital, so when the Chief offered to send the detectives already on the case...”
“...They were more than happy to accept,” Connor finished. “And luckily, we both know French, so this works out à la perfection.”
Eerie made a disapproving sound. “About that last part…”
“Yeah, boss?” A stewardess handed him a package of peanuts which he quickly tore into.
“I learned French because it was the only foreign language they offered in high school and I thought being bilingual would be good for a resume.” Eerie propped her elbow up on their armrest and put her chin on her hand, staring at Connor. “But you never seemed the type to care about stuff like that. Why did you learn French?”
To her surprise, he blushed. “It’s, uh… it’s not important.”
“Really?” Eerie blinked innocently at him. “So you wouldn’t mind telling me then. Right?”
Connor stuck out his tongue at her. “Nosey.”
“Comes with the detective territory, boss. Spill.”
After watching her for a long moment, he slumped his shoulders and groaned. “I did it to impress a girl, alright?”
Eerie’s eyebrows flew up. “Wow, really?”
“It was middle school okay?” Connor crossed his arms as his tail twitched in irritation behind him. “It didn’t work either, obviously. That was, uh, just before the whole curse thing happened. But I stuck with it!” Connor paused. “Well, mostly.”
“What do you mean, ‘mostly’?”
“Well, I’m conversational at least…”
“Connor! You said you were fluent!”
“No,” he replied. “I said I can speak it.”
“That-” Eerie stopped herself and pinched the bridge of her nose. It was a complication, but if anyone could manage to get by without knowing the native language, it was Connor. He was more resourceful than he looked. “Okay, fine.”
Their conversation was cut short as the pilot announced that they would be landing soon. They glanced at each other, Eerie locked eyes with him as he began eating the package the peanuts came in. Both of them reached the same conclusion. With more people waking up around them, it wasn’t as safe to talk about their assignment. It would have to wait until the hotel.
----------------
Connor's hand hesitated at the door to their shared hotel room. Knowing their mission designer, he’d half expected her to get them a room with only one bed. Jemina was great and all, but sometimes she was even more pushy about his relationship with Eerie than his own mother was. He opened the door and breathed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, this room did have two beds. With some big business event happening in Paris at the moment, two rooms was out of the question.
“As much as I appreciate being stuck staring at your fluffy butt, can you get a move on?” Eerie’s voice brought him back into the moment. “This stuff is heavy.”
“Right, sorry.” He stood still for another moment and looked behind him. “...So you like what you see back there, huh?” His tail swished back and forth happily.
She rolled her eyes and pushed him with her foot. Snickering, he stepped forward set to work turning the bed into something almost like home. Before long, he heard her speak up again.
“...How did you manage to pack your giant banana pillow?”
“Very carefully,” Connor said in what he hoped was a cool and mysterious way. “I figured you wouldn’t let me build a nest of pillows and blankets-”
“Accurate. I don’t want to get the house keepers annoyed with us. We’ll be here for the next few weeks after all.”
“-so this is the next best thing. Thankfully for me, Nanners here is a cuddlebug.” To prove his point, Connor laid down on his bed and spooned the person-sized banana. He opened one eye to see Eerie hiding a smile with her hand. His heart melted at how cute she was in this moment.
His eyes widened at the thought. She’s your intern, he mentally chastised himself, get ahold of yourself. He quickly sat up and put his legs over the side of his bed, facing Eerie.
“So now we’re in Paris. You remember the next part?”
“Yup, some of us pay attention to the mission briefing.” Eerie rolled her eyes, but a smirk still played at her lips. “Tomorrow, we’ll be setting up our covers. Chief managed to get us some part time jobs. Apparently I’m going to be doing deliveries for a local bakery.”
Connor frowned. “That sounds delicious. Is it too late to switch?” He asked with a hopeful lilt to his voice.
“Way too late. But hey,” she said, squeezing his shoulder. “You’re going to be an English tutor for some rich kid, I’m sure they’ll keep you well fed.” She pursed her lips. “With actual people food. So no digging around in the garbage.”
Connor feigned a gasp. “Boss, this is Paris! They have the finest, most gourmet trash in the whole world. How can you ask me not to try the local cuisine?”
“It’s not- No! We’re going to actual restaurants, I’m not letting you dumpster dive while we’re here. We’re supposed to be undercover, remember? And that’s exactly the sort of thing that will draw unwanted attention.”
“You’re just using that as an excuse ‘cuz you don’t want me eating garbage.” He waggled his finger right below her nose. She gently pushed it aside, but even with that brief touch he could a vague feeling of her emotions - a mix of exasperation and amusement.
“You’re exactly right. Is it working?”
His tail flicked back and forth irritatedly behind him. “...Maybe,” he grumbled.
“Good,” she said with far too much pep for his liking. “Now, it’s been a long day and we don’t start our new jobs until tomorrow. I’m going to take a nap.”
Connor yawned. “I think I’ll do the same.”
“You slept for most of the trip here!”
“And that was very exhausting!”
Eerie stared at the ceiling for a few long moments before laughing and soon enough he joined her.
“Good night, boss.”
“Night, boss.”

Curiosity Killed the Exorcist
“And then, see here? You have to be on the lookout for subtle signs like these. This indicates that he’s…” Marinette nodded as Tim continued explaining, pointing out various body language and other clues out on the Batcomputer. It had only been about six months since the Batfam collectively adopted the little ladybug into their menagerie of heroes, and started teaching her deductive habits and skills. She would not allow them anywhere near Paris on pain of death (some of them had already tried, and Bruce was still recovering from the bruise to his ego. The bruise on his ass from being teleported out of the city and onto the stone of the Batcave was gone, though) but she welcomed any help they could give from within Gotham’s city limits.
Usually, at least in the beginning, they did their mentorship at a distance over video call. But then Tim found out her identity, and Marinette made the excuse of wanting to meet with them in person to gauge their trustworthiness for herself and erase their memories of her identity if they failed her test— and, well, it all snowballed from there until she was teleporting to the Batcave every few days for detective lessons. She was practically a Bat herself, if not for her out of theme codename. And she found herself surprisingly comfortable with the thought of them being a… very eccentric extended family.
Tim was flipping to another saved video in the Batcomputer archives to show another example of his current lesson, when Tikki flew up to Marinette in a hurry. She was holding Kaalki’s glasses. The little kwami whispered something in Marinette’s ear, instantly making the teen blanch and force on the glasses.
“Sorry Timmy, gotta cut this short! I’ll come back tomorrow to make up for it! Okay? Okay! Awesome, you’re the best, bye!” She ignored all of Tim’s protests and rapid fire questions, instead opening up a portal and jumping through it as fast as humanly possible. The portal has barely disappeared before an all-too-familiar voice rose up from behind Tim.
“Maybe I’m still drunk, ‘cause I could’a sworn I just saw a portal closing in the damned Batcave, of all places,” the British-accented drawl was accompanied by the flick of a lighter and accompanying fizzle of a flame. Tim groaned, mentally making a note to ask how in the world Marinette had known that John “Annoying asshole” Constantine was showing up soon, and if he could be in on the warning next time. Bruce, cowl still off, walked over from where he had been sparring with Damian and crossed his arms. He had also heard Marinette’s hasty exit, and made a few mental notes of his own before focusing on the exorcist in front of him.
“What do you want, Constantine?” he grumbled. Any time the blond brit showed up, things only got far more complicated than he ever enjoyed. And he always gave Bruce a migraine, to boot.
“Two things actually, Batsy,” John held up to fingers as his free hand tucked his lighter away in his pocket. His unlit cigarette stayed in his mouth though, probably just for the familiar feel of it. “One; I’m gonna need you to tell me why there was a portal closing when I walked in, because I’ll be honest. The implications there are way more interesting than what I came here for in the first place.”
“None of your business. What’s the second thing?” Bruce immediately shot him down, but John was not one to be deterred. He never fucking was.
“But you hate magic! You make sure I know that all too bloody well every time I pay you a visit, so why the sudden change in heart? Huh?”
“Drop it, Constantine. What. Do you. Want?”
“Fine, fine. I need your help with…”
— * — * — * — * — *
A week later, Marinette was sitting with Jason and Damian in one of the manor’s sitting rooms, the three of them just minding their own business and silently enjoying one another’s presence. Even if two of them would never admit it. Jason was reading Jane Eyre for the millionth time, Damian was leaning against Titus on the ground as he sketched, and Marinette was embroidering a sunhat. Unfortunately for her, Alfred the Cat was currently asleep on her lap and thus holding her hostage.
Even as Tikki flew up to her ear in a panic and whispered, making Marinette prick herself with her needle. She hissed for a second but shrugged off the familiar pain, much more concerned with whatever news Tikki had given her. Damian and Jason were already on high alert from the second that a whispered curse had left her lips, and were staring straight at her and her kwami and Marinette frantically tried to find a way to get up without awakening the cat sleeping on her.
“Uh, what’s wrong?” Jason asked, feeling thoroughly confused and left out. On one hand, he knew that if they were in physical danger she would have moved Alfred the Cat without hesitation. On the other, he did not like the sheer amount of anxiety he could see her experiencing. Marinette’s frantic eyes shot over to him, pupils mere pinpricks and hands mouth agape as she tried to form some sort of plan.
“Uh— “
“Ah! You must be the fair maiden that the Bats are comfortable with using magic around them,” John goddamned Constantine threw the door to the sitting room open wide, making it bounce off of the wall and lightly smack back against his shoulder. He ignored it as he grinned at the three younger people in the room, waltzing in casual as anything. He wagged a finger at her playfully. “I’ve been awfully curious about you, ya know? Brucie boy knows a shit ton of magic users, but he never likes seein’ any of us do our thing. And to not only allow you to teleport without any apparent discomfort but to actively protect your identity from me? Now that’s a damn accomplishment and I really gotta applaud you for it,” he mockingly clapped his hands a few times. “So what’s your secret, huh? I won’t tattle.”
“No thanks. Kaalki, a little help?” Marinette carefully pushed Alfred the Cat off of her lap before diving into the portal that Kaalki whipped up for her, the entire process happening so fast that Constantine couldn’t even get out a proper “hey!” before she was gone and the portal closed. He just nodded, hooking his thumbs in his pockets.
“Ya know what? Fair. That’s fair.”
“Goddamn it, Constantine!” Jason threw up his hands in frustration. “Why the fuck do you have to scare away one of the only sane people in this family?”
“Part of my charm, little red riding hood.”
— * — * — * — * — *
“You know, I’ve been pretty damn nice not teleporting right over to you whenever you disappear. So why don’t you just tell me why you’re avoiding me now that we happen to be in the same room by complete accident, huh?” John asked from where he sat in one of Bruce’s lounge chairs sipping on a beer. Marinette mimed choking him, clearly fed up. He had been trying to have a conversation with her for the past three months, ever since that one time he caught the tail end of her portal closing in the Batcave. Three. Long. Months. And he hadn’t given up, because something about this little Parisian teenager intrigued him. She was sixteen, that much he had gathered from the Bats. But to be sixteen and not only in possession of the Horse miraculous but also clearly the Ladybugs, since he had seen Tikki more than once as well, now that was interesting.
Anybody being in the possession of more than one Miraculous was already cause enough to be keeping an eye on them, which was why he had been keeping an eye on the Paris situation and had pieced together on his own that the presence of Tikki meant that this little parisian teenager was none other than Ladybug herself. Now, that? That was a whole new level of concerning, especially since he knew firsthand that the old Grand Guardian was gone and passed his title down to— yeah, Ladybug.
After that deduction, his interest in Marinette had swiftly switched from curiosity to fuck-I-need-to-know-what’s-going-on-here. Because no kid should have to deal with that kind of weight, and Constantine always looked out for kids when he could.
But right then, Marinette was glaring at him. She had been just coming over for a normal “family” dinner with the Waynes, which she attended from time to time. And apparently they had decided to have Constantine already over so that they could chaperone a meeting between them that would hopefully appease the stupid british magic user enough that he left them all alone again until the next time he needed help.
“Believe me when I say, you’d rather not know,” she replied sharply, glaring Dick. He was the one who had convinced her to come despite her recent close calls with Constantine in the past few days. He studiously avoided her gaze. “I just would rather not cross your path, and there’s no reason for us to interact. Why do you care, anyway?”
“You see, now that is an excellent question!” he chugged the last of his beer and gestured to her with the empty bottle. “Normally, I wouldn’t give a flying rat’s ass. But I’ve put two and two together, since I know who Tikki is,” he nodded to the red and black Kwami. “And maybe I just wanna keep an eye on the new Grand Guardian to make sure she’s doin’ alright. That’s an awful lot of magic and responsibility that you don’t deserve, but I’m not about to try to take it away. Keepin’ an eye on you is the next best thing.”
“Try again,” Marinette shot back, crossing her arms. “You were interested in me before you learned about me being Ladybug.”
“I’m nosy, what do you want me to say? I saw a portal in Batman’s man-cave, I get curious. Sue me.”
“Well. I have Bruce and everyone else already watching out for me, so you can leave me alone now. If I need your help, I’ll make sure to ask every other magic user first before contacting you.”
“Woah, now what’s all this venom for?”
“Uh, maybe we should go and actually eat dinner?” Dick tried to step in, hands up. Constantine had stood up from the chair he was in, which was usually a cue to change the subject as fast as possible. “Before Alfred has to come get us?”
“Maybe I’ll be less venomous if you let the subject drop and leave me alone!”
“Context would be nice, though.”
“Seriously guys, let’s go! Food!” Dick was once again ignored.
“Context is the last thing you need in this situation,” Marinette’s voice was suddenly soft, her arms dropping to her sides. “We’ve had this conversation so many times in so many now-deleted timelines. Just drop it this time.”
“If those timelines are now-deleted, then I obviously don’t remember what’s so bad about telling me why you’re acting like I’m some hated family member you’re avoiding!”
Silence.
Pure. Fucking. Silence. As they all watch with front row seats as Marinette flinches at the word ‘family’.
Pure silence as Constantine’s shoulders drop at the sight of her flinch, realization slapping itself on his face.
“No.”
“See? I fucking knew you would— that this would happen. This always happens, you always hate finding it out, but you’re so— so stubborn!” Marinette was blinking away tears, digging in her pockets and bringing out Kaalki’s glasses. “You’ll drop it now, at least. You always do.”
“Now what is that supposed to mean?” Constantine rubbed his forehead, still trying to sort through his amalgam of emotions. Marinette just shook her head, turning to Kaalki.
“Do you mind showing Monsieur Constantine the way out, Kaalki? I’ll grab you a load of sugar cubes afterward.”
“No, wait, hang on a second!”
A portal opened up under him, making John “Stubborn Idiot” Constantine drop ten feet down onto the hardwood, polished floor of his house. His bruised tailbone would take a while to heal, but his frazzled mind was by far the more concerning development. He staggered to his feet, reaching for the nearest bottle of tequila.
“Ugh, fuck my damn life.”
— * — * — * — * — *
“Marinette..?” Damian nudged the girl with his shoulder, frowning. It was after dinner that same day, and as much as he hated to admit it he had grown to actually like having her around. She was a good friend to have. And seeing her slumped back on one of their sofas, sketchbook covering her face and not a single rambling conversation to be had or heard? It was very concerning. She just made a groaning sound to answer him, prompting his frown to deepen. “Are you alright?”
“I just can’t believe that such a sweet, adorable thing like you is half made up of Constantine’s genes,” Jason mused bluntly from the opposite couch, where he tossed a rubber ball up and down out of boredom. “But now I see where you get all of your Disaster Bi-ness from.”
“Shut uuuuup,” She groaned, chucking her sketchbook at him. He caught it in midair, replacing his rubber ball with it and tossing it up and down in the air. “I’m just frustrated. This timeline is still perfectly stable, so I can’t erase it. And I can’t exactly ask ‘hey, can someone commit a horrid atrocity that makes this timeline split from the main one so that I can erase it and we can start over from four months ago?’ because that would be horribly irresponsible of me. But seriously, Jason. If you’re gonna ever commit, like, city-wise arson? I’d probably condone it right now if only so I have an excuse to use time travel to get out of this situation.”
“Not committing arson unless you give me a better reason for it, Pigtails.”
“Damn.”
“But are you okay?” Damian asked again, seeing as she had completely ignored him.
“I’m fine, Damian,” she finally sighed. “And I know how this is gonna go. He’s going to totally ignore me now, until we meet during some magical crisis and he only interacts with me when necessary. Then he pretends we never met, we have a private little one-sided whisper-argument about how he will never make a good father figure and I would be better off leaving him alone, blah blah blah. Avoidance is a coping mechanism I guess I inherited from him.”
“Guess it’s a good thing I’m trying to bite that in the bud then, eh?” Marinette startled out of her sitting position, seeing John stumble into the room…
Drunk off his ass. But apparently still at least mildly coherent.
“I agree with deleted-me’s, I’m not gonna be a dad. Not me,” he tripped, landing on his still-bruised ass and hissing in pain before continuing from the floor; “So if you’re looking for another Daddy dearest, that ain’t me.”
“See, I knew this is how you’d—”
“Let me finish,” he interrupted. “I don’t know how long the booze is gonna last and I need it’s courage here. ‘Kay? ‘Kay. Where was I? Right. But I know magic, ya know. The kind that doesn’t rely on little bobblehead gods to do. I got— like, a million books. Shit ton of books. At my place. Ya can read ‘em. My books. At my place. But I ain’t gonna parent, but I can lend ya books. Maybe give magic advice. Teach a little. Little bit. Didn’t think I’d have a child, but apparently I do and she’s the fuckin’ grand guardian and a damn hero, and I don’t know how the fuck I was able to help make someone like that. But whatever, it’s not like the world’s ever fuckin’ been easy on me,” He pulled out a sample-sized bottle of whiskey from one of the pockets on the inside of his trench coat and chugged it. After a brief wince and hiss at the burn, he kept rambling. “My door’s open, is what I’m tryin’ to say. No guarantee I’ll be in any state to talk to when you walk through it, but it’s open.”
Deciding to steadfastly ignore the tears streaming down her face, Marinette just swallowed thickly and nodded.
“I, uh. I think I can work with that.”
John barely made it to the nearby bin in time to vomit into it.
— * — * — * — * — *
I hate my imagination sometimes, guys. I started imagining a convo between Mari and Constantine at like 4am and it wouldn't leave me alone until I got it down. but by the time I wrote it, I kinda forgot like 60% of the original convo and just winged it. And this was born. I 100% blame @multifandomscribette because their Bio!dad John Constantine headcannons are amazing and even though this isn't in that universe, those headcannons are exactly what inspired this. So blame them, lol.

A Failed Betrothal (5)
This is going to be the last part I am going to post in a while. My school is finally starting up again and I am sure to be swamped with homework. Without further ado. Enjoy ❤
[Masterlist]
(Part 1)(Part 4)
-----------
Damian laid in bed, thinking about the recent turn of events. Lady, who told them that they can call her Marinette since they might as well get acquainted while the Waynes were in Paris. She had found out Jason’s identity after a few google searches and by extension, the rest of the Bats while they both were taking a shower. It had taken a few arguments and one sentimonster attack that cut one of the arguments short to trust the Dupain-Chengs with their secret identities. His bride was apparently a superhero too. Has been for a few years. In a different world, he might have actually dated her out of his own free will and fought crime with her together.
Damian shook his head at that thought.
That was the curse talking. Get a hold of yourself, Wayne. Resist. Don’t think about Marinette and her blue eyes.
Back to the akumas, Paris had been under the control of a magical terrorist for years. Lady Noire, formerly known as Ladybug, formed a team to battle against him. He also found out about the Guardian who chose Marinette and someone else, who wasn’t spoken about much except that his name was Chat Noir and she now wields his ring temporarily, to fight against Hawkmoth as partners. The same Guardian that promised her hand-in-marriage in exchange for protection from the League of Assassins. Sabine, the Blue Reaper, had to be restrained from killing the old amnesiatic man by her bear of a husband who was reluctant to do so and also wanted to help her.
Hawkmoth also had a partner who went by the name, Mayura, with a power similar to his and could create sentimonster out of negative emotions. Their top suspect was Gabriel Agreste, with much evidence pointing his way but they had difficulty trying to confirm it and had the time to gather evidence to do it. The local authorities were helpful but getting a search warrant for a famous, rich designer who was a known recluse with circumstantial evidence is not possible.
After informing their father of their kidnapping and the situation in Paris (and racking up the Dupain-Cheng's phone bill), they were told to stay there and help as much as they can. Tim, who was coming to Paris for a vacation (suspicious), got his plans hijacked and was now going to help uncover Hawkmoth’s identity.
When the Justice League had reached out a few years ago, they were rebuffed by the Mayor. Nightrunner got into contact with the one of the heroes, Ladybug who asked for a meeting outside of Paris with Wonder Woman and Batman came along, to assess her. They didn’t expect a young girl to be Paris’s heroine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3 years ago…
“Bonjour, Princess Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Hippolayta, it is an honour to meet you. And you too, Batman.” The spotted heroine greeted both of them with Nightrunner besides her. Their meeting point was in the gardens in the Palace of Versailles.
“The pleasure is all mine, Ladybug. But I am confused as to why you have refused the Justice League’s help.” Wonder Woman was worried that the Ladybug Miraculous was active again and for many good reasons.
“I would be glad for some help but Paris is run by an incompetent fool. He wants no one outside of Paris to think that the city is unsafe due to Hawkmoth and keep the tourism numbers high. The other reason is that my Miraculous Cure can restore any physical damages done during a fight and involving you might result in more damages than I could cure. But I also think it would be better if there were less powerful heroes in Paris, akumas amplifies one’s power and I don’t want to fight you after you had a bad day.” Ladybug explained. Nightrunner murmured in agreement.
“Do you know how Hawkmoth operates?” asked Batman. He had read reports of the situation but wondered the true extent of it.
“Have Wonder Woman explained to you about the Miraculous?”
He nodded.
“Hawkmoth has the butterfly miraculous, and it has the power of transmission. In the right hands, they would be used to grant ordinary people powers as the user’s champions. But in the hands of Hawkmoth, he targets people with high negative emotions, a girl after a bad break-up or a student with a failed grade. He grants them powers to use for revenge or some obscure version of justice. In return, he asks for mine and Chat Noir’s miraculous. With our two miraculous, he can make a wish but wishes always come with a price so it is best if we keep it out of his reach.”
“How have you not captured him yet?”
“Hawkmoth is a coward who rarely comes out to face us. I have never met him face-to-face. He uses people to get what he wants. Not very honourable. The Mayor has refused to help my attempts to stop him or prevent more akumas because his bratty daughter isn’t given a Miraculous to be a hero. I don’t have the time or resources because I am still in school and have other obligations outside the suit. I can’t tell my family and ask for help because the Guardian’s ,the one who gave me the Miraculous in the first place, secret identities rule and some magic thing that makes me unable to tell them.”
The adults were all horrified at what the girl was going through.
“We could help in other ways. Not fight the akumas but provide you the resources to track down and capture him. Do you have any training? From the footage we have seen, you know martial arts and how to use some weapons.”
“I was raised in a forgotten temple somewhere in Asia with brutal training everyday before I ran away. I met someone on my way out who took me in and adopted me.” She said it seriously enough that they have no room for doubt.
“Batman, she just said she was adopted. She may have the features but the answer is no.” Wonder Woman said with a knowing look in her eyes.
“I wasn’t thinking about it. She has a duty to Paris right now and I am not going to take away from her life here. I don’t adopt every black-haired and blue-eyed child I see.” Batman denied.
“I am confused.” Ladybug said, tilting her head.
“Batman here has a bad habit of adopting kids with a tragic past, especially kids with black hair and blue eyes.” Nightrunner explained to his fellow Parisian hero.
“Well, Mousier, you will have to fight my parents for custody. While I have training, Chat Noir doesn’t and he hinders the battles with his ‘help’. I would give him some but he sees them as dates even though I have told him it’s not.”
“His incompetence is a liability. Why is he your partner?”
“The Guardian chose him too like he chose me through some stupid trial I somehow passed the requirements for. I am just hoping that there is a really good reason for choosing Chat Noir. I have some questions on how you are-”
“Ladybug, what are you doing?” A sharp voice cut in. An old man who appeared to be dressed as a tortoise landed in front of them.
“Master Fu, this is Princess Diana of Themyscira and the world’s greatest detective, Batman. I am asking for their help in finding Hawkmoth.” Ladybug explained, confused why Master Fu looked upset.
“Ladybug, that was extremely foolish of you. This is a matter of the Order. You shouldn’t have involved other heroes in it. We can resolve this on our own. I apologize on behalf of her for wasting your time.”
“But, Master-” “We will talk about this later, Ladybug. You are young and don’t understand things yet.”
“Guardian, with all due respect, my mother was a Ladybug wielder herself and the Amazons will lend a hand to any miraculous holders in need.”
“It is appreciated but Ladybug, Chat Noir and I can do it on our own. Come along, Ladybug.”
“Let me at least apologize for my mistake, Guardian.”
“Very well. Meet me later.”
“I am sorry but it looks like I have to fight Hawkmoth without your help. That being said please don’t try to look further into Hawkmoth’s identity and leave any notes of your leads in the mouth of the gargoyle on the northside of Notre Dame where I usually rest after I finish patrol. Salut, Princess Diana, Batman, Nightrunner.” She left using her yo-yo to swing away after giving them a wink.
Batman smirked. He had to give it to Ladybug, she was clever and resourceful and Diana was right, he wanted to adopt her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Present time…
(Words in bold are French)
Now that the previous Guardian was out of the picture, the Miraculous team would gladly accept any help they can get.
Damian and Jason had picked up Tim from the airport and they had already set things up in one of the Wayne penthouses in Paris. Less chance of nosy maids than in a hotel.
Bilal had already handed over all the evidence he could find. He was also one of the Miraculous team’s trainers when Sabine couldn’t make it. Jason and Damian were going to help in training and be back-up heroes when needed. (Bilal wore a miraculous once to help out. And that one time was weird enough to last him a lifetime and he was never doing it again.)
Sadly, all the magic users who were allies or part of the JL were busy with other missions or MIA so they couldn’t break Damian’s curse yet. Bruce didn’t see the problem with the curse so unless it causes major problems or someone is free to break it. They couldn’t go back to Gotham until they got the necessary things in order so it looks like they were going to be in Paris for a while.
The next morning, Tim was nowhere to be found. Because they were paranoid Batboys, they tracked his phone to see him at the Dupain-Cheng’s bakery with Marinette and a group of other people, having breakfast.
“There you are, Replacement.” Jason shouted as he entered the bakery, “So, this is where you were? I see you have already figured out who Ladybug is and met her.”
Marinette looked at Damian and Jason, then at Tim and back at them again.
Oh.
Oh.
She face-palmed as she connected the dots and realized what the nagging feeling she had around Tim was about.
“Oh my Kwamis, you are Tim Drake, adopted by Bruce Wayne aka Batman. Jason and Damian are your brothers. And judging by your build, you are Red Robin. I feel so stupid.”
Thankfully, there were no customers around yet to hear some of the world’s most important secrets being out.
“I am- We are not- Bruce isn’t- How?! How the hell did you find out? And you are Ladybug?!” Tim was floundering at Marinette’s words and the caffeine from his first coffee of the day hadn’t kicked in yet. He looked at her friends, who were looking at the Wayne boys with shocked expressions….and looked similar to the rest of the Miraculous Team.
The caffeine finally kicked in.
“Oh my God. I was talking to the entire Miraculous Team and I didn’t know it. That means Chloe Bourgeois is a hero. That bratty blonde I met as a child is a hero.”
“Speak for yourself, Timothy, my childhood friend is a hero too. I can’t believe we are all heroes.” Chloe said in total disbelief.
Introductions and alter egos were exchanged.
Nearly everything went swimmingly if it weren’t for Chloe jokingly elbowed Marinette and said, “You get to date a hero too. No need to worry about flaking out on dates.”
“What do you mean dates? Dupain-Cheng and I aren’t dating.” Damian said, “My mother wanted us to marry each other, not date.”
“Mari, looks like you need some explaining to do.”
Marinette gave the short story on how she met Damian and Jason.
“So you guys are absolutely not dating? Cool. Tim, are you still open to being Mari-bug's fake boyfriend?” Chloe asked. Tim looked at her incredulously.
“You called me all the way here to fake-date your friend. Why? Not that I am complaining about her or anything.” “There is this boy in our class, Adrien Agreste and he has a little obsession with Marinette.” Chloe explained. “Romantic Soulmates.” Nathaniel chimed in, doing air-quotes.
“So I volunteered on your behalf to be my best friend’s long-distance boyfriend in America who has video-call dates with her once a week. You are going to have little romantic dates coincidently where our classmates are going to be, especially Adrien. It might put him off from pursuing Marinette for a while. After you leave, we are just to mention you every now and then to prevent him from getting any ideas.”
Damian felt a hot, burning sensation in his chest and clenched his jaw at the thought of Marin- Dupain-Cheng holding hands, cuddling and doing all those romantic actions with Drake of all people. (No, he wasn’t jealous. Not at all. Don’t be stupid. )
“Tch, Drake is going to be busy trying to find Hawkmoth. He can’t go around Paris, being Dupain-Cheng’s boyfriend. Besides, he can’t be a proper boyfriend even in his most lucid moments. I will be her boyfriend instead.”

Taking Chances Ch. 17: Talking (Alt Prompt: The Talk)
AO3
First
Prev
Tim walks into the kitchen, blinking sleepily at his little sister. He glances over at the clock on the microwave, blinking again to make sure that he hadn’t misread the time. Five thirty in the morning, and she was baking cookies. He clears his throat, smiling apologetically as she jumps.
“Sorry Mari. Early morning?” He asks, moving to get coffee and noting that the pot was already half empty.
“More like, late night.” She corrects. Tim frowns. Her summer in Gotham was supposed to be relaxing for her. It was supposed to be a way for her to be a kid again. Instead she was making cookies by herself at five thirty in the morning after not sleeping. He wasn’t sure what was wrong, but he was determined to figure it out. There was no way he was going to make her deal with whatever this is by herself. She has backup now.
“Did you want to talk about it?” He offers, leaning against the counter, drinking his coffee quickly to try and wake up more.
“Not really. Kinda just wanted to stress bake.” She says quietly. He nods. Sometimes it was hard to talk about things. That’s okay, he can look into it later.
“Well, I’ve gotta go work on some things in the cave. Did you want to come with?” He asks, refilling his coffee. She frowns, looking at the bowl in front of her.
“Can you wait like, five minutes? I just need to get these ready to chill.” She says, gesturing to the bowl. He nods, watching as she zips around the kitchen as if she’d grown up in the kitchen. He wasn’t sure why she’d been up baking so early, but he was determined to help her. As much as he avoided sleep, he knew it wasn’t exactly healthy. Probably shouldn’t encourage his little sister to do the same thing.
---
Bruce walks into the theatre room, frowning when he sees Dick and Jason, but no Marinette. That was odd. She hadn’t been in her room either. He decides to check the kitchen next, knowing his daughter enjoyed baking. Walking into the kitchen, he’s surprised to find it empty as well. Glancing at the coffee pot, he notices it’s nearly empty, but still on. Which meant Tim had been up to get coffee recently. Flipping the pot off, he turns and starts towards the Batcave. Perhaps Tim knew where Marinette was. Walking down his usual entrance, he’s unsurprised to see Tim working at the computer. What he hadn’t expected, however, was Marinette curled up in a chair next to Tim, sleeping.
“Tim?” Bruce calls, catching his son’s attention.
“Oh, hey B.” Tim says, not looking away from the screen.
“Is there a reason Marinette is sleeping in a chair instead of her bed?” He asks. He knew she had a nightmare last night, but he had assumed she’d fallen asleep with Jason and Dick in the theatre room. And if she hadn’t, he’d at least expected she’d return to her own room. Not the Batcave. While some of his sons preferred the cave to any of the other rooms in the manor, he’d hoped his daughter was different. That he had at least one child willing to live in the house instead of the cave.
“I’m sure there is. And I’m going to find out.” Tim says, leaving Bruce with more questions than answers.
“Okay. How long have the two of you been down here?” He asks. Tim stops typing, glancing down at his watch before looking back up to the screen.
“Little under two hours.” He replies, jerking his head towards Marinette. “Think that’s also the only sleep she’s got all night, so probably best to leave her for a little longer.” Bruce frowns at this. Sure, he knew that she had a nightmare last night. He knew it was bad enough that she had sobbed into his arms. But had she really avoided sleep after that? Was it really that bad? She didn’t want to talk to him about it last night, but maybe she’d talk later today. He wouldn’t push her, lord knows that any child of his isn’t going to take well to that, but maybe she’d talk to
him now. Hopefully the nightmare would now be far enough from her mind that she could talk.
---
Marinette gasps, sitting up so quickly that she manages to flip the chair she’d fallen asleep in. She hisses in pain as her head bounces off the stone floor. So much for being the holder of the Miraculous of good luck.
“Did you just fall out of your chair?” Tim asks. She glances up at her brother, who had apparently left for another cup of coffee.
“No?” She says, smiling awkwardly from the floor, where her limbs are currently entangled with the chair. Tim shakes his head and snorts, sipping from his mug.
“Whatever you say Mari.” He says, walking over and sitting back in his chair, going back to his work on the computer.
“What time is it?” She asks, carefully untangling herself and getting off the ground.
“Mmm, around nine.” He says, not looking away from the screen.
“In the morning?” She asks, knowing it was completely possible for Tim to have worked nonstop in the cave.
“Yes.” He says, shaking his head. “B wants to talk to you, by the way.” He adds.
“Oh. Okay. Am I in trouble?” She asks, suddenly self conscious. It was the first time anyone in her family had had to deal with one of her nightmares. Usually, Tikki was the one to wake her up and calm her down before she attracted an akuma.
“Of course not.” He reassures her. “He’s probably in his study.”
“Oh, good, okay. Well, I’m gonna go talk to him. Please take a break, Tim. I know you haven’t eaten anything today. You can’t run on coffee and spite, trust me, I’ve tried.” Marinette says, grinning at her brother before using the tunnel that connected straight to the study. She still hadn’t figured out the many rooms of the manor, but the maze-like setup of the Batcave was something that she’d figured out easily. Taking a breath, she knocks on her side of the Grandfather clock, waiting for a response.
“Come in.” Her dad says. She walks in, grinning at the exasperated look on his face.
“Hi dad!” She says cheekily, plopping down onto one of the couches.
“Is there a reason you didn’t use the actual door?” He asks. She shrugs.
“Why get lost in the manor when I can just use the secret tunnels from the cave?” She asks. He sighs.
“I still don’t understand that, but alright. How are you feeling this morning?” He asks, his face turning serious. She smiles, but it’s forced now. She didn’t want to talk about this. She really didn’t want to talk about this with her dad, who would surely never give her permission to date Adrien if he knew. Not that she needed permission, but it would make it easier not having her dad against her.
“I’m fine!” She says, keeping her plastered on smile.
“I talked to Tim this morning.” He says, instead of calling her out. Well crap.
“Oh really?” She asks, silently cursing Tim. Or, wanting to anyway. But she wouldn’t because she knew he meant well.
“He said that you hadn’t slept last night. I know you didn’t want to talk to me about your nightmare last night, but maybe now-”
“No. No, I’m fine. It’s fine.” She rambles, cutting him off. He frowns.
“Marinette, I’m not going to be angry with you if that’s what you’re worried about. You had a nightmare, and it has clearly left you shaken.” He says. She huffs, running her fingers through her hair exasperatedly.
“I just- I can’t tell you. If I tell you, you’re going to be mad at someone and I don’t want you to be mad at them.” She explains, wincing as his face darkens.
“Did someone hurt you?” He asks, his voice the coldest she’s ever heard.
“Dad-”
“Did someone hurt you?” He asks again, cutting her off as he stands up.
“Not on purpose.” She insists, wringing her hands together.
“It doesn’t matter if it was on purpose, Marinette! This person hurt you badly enough that you had a nightmare about it. Bad enough that you were sobbing, that you couldn’t go back to sleep. I don’t care if it was on purpose or not, Marinette, that person does not deserve to be anywhere near you.” Her dad says, his face and voice hard as stone.
“But Dad, it really wasn’t his fault-”
“His?”
“Yes, Dad, he was akumatized.” She says, watching as he unclenches his fist and collapses back into his chair. “So it wasn’t his fault.” She adds, frowning as he shakes his head.
“Why didn’t-” He pauses, seemingly recollecting himself. “Why isn’t there a story on it?” He asks. She frowns.
“Story on what?” She asks.
“A story on Adrien being akumatized? Why isn’t there any record of it?” He asks. She jerks back like she was slapped. How did he- world’s greatest detective. Of course.
“He doesn’t know.” She says softly.
“How?”
“One of the Miraculous users is Bunnix. She holds the Miraculous of time, and is able to time travel. It was about a year ago, she came and grabbed me and took me to the future.” She explains, avoiding looking at him. She didn’t want to talk about this. It was the talk that she’d been avoiding, no matter how many times Tikki assured her she could talk to her dad about it. Or her brothers. But she couldn’t. She didn’t want to. But now she had to.
“In the future, Adrien and I had been a couple. He found out my identity as Ladybug, and I’m not exactly sure how it came to it, but for some reason, Hawkmoth targeted us. He was able to akumatize Adrien while he was Chat Noir. He….he became Chat Blanc. The complete opposite of Chat Noir.” She says, watching her hands as they shake in her lap. He doesn’t say anything, so she continues. “He still had the power of destruction but with the help of the akuma...it was awful. His power became unlimited. He blew up the moon.”
“The moon?” He asks.
“Yes.” She says. “He also flooded Paris, destroyed the Eiffel tower, and killed both Hawkmoth and future me. That was why Bunnix needed me. I had to fix it. But she wasn’t able to stay with me, so I had to fight him alone. And I didn’t know that he was Adrien then, but he was still my partner and he kept calling me Marinette and he told me that it was our fault. That our love did it to the world. And it hurt, Dad. It hurt that my best friend destroyed the world because of me. Because of us.” She says, voice breaking as tears fall.
“Marinette, honey, look at me.” He says softly. She looks up at him, surprised to see that he had moved to kneel in front of her. “That was not your fault. And you should not have had to go through that by yourself. That was wrong of Bunnix. It was not your fault.” He reassures her. She lets out a sigh of relief, throwing her arms around him and crying into his chest just like she did last night.
“Father, have you seen- what did you do to Marinette?” Damian asks, barging into the room. Marinette snorts, her cries quickly becoming laughter as she catches a glimpse of her little brother’s face. His usual scowl had become full of anger before flickers of confusion flit across as she laughs.
“I’m sorry, petit oiseau. I’m okay now. I just had a nightmare last night and Dad asked about it.” She explains, knowing that Damian hated being out of the loop.
“Tt. Very well. I was trying to find you to see if you would like to accompany me to the park with Titus. Alfred said that I cannot go alone, and you are the least annoying possible companion.” He says. Marinette smiles. Ever since she’d been hit by the de-aging akuma, Damian had wanted to spend time with her and Titus together. She assumed it was the best way he knew to bond with her without sparring (which her Dad had banned for the moment unless he or Dick were able to supervise, honestly you break one little display case).
“I’d love to. Could we come back to this later?” She asks, glancing at her Dad who had moved to lean against his desk. He sighs, but nods.
“Yes. Keep your phones on, both of you.” He instructs. She nods, grinning before pulling her brother after her. They couldn’t keep Titus waiting, after all.
