The vast marble hall was lit by white taper candles. Their light bounced off mirrors and crystals, setting the world into a golden shine. A temple to wealth and influences set in a Rococo finished. There, looking cozy with a socialite was the Minister from France. Trying to keep up with her more dance savvy partner was the fame MACUSA Auror.  Each guest donned a mask. Some had a theme going among them. A Merlin here. Morgana with her date in a Raven mask. A pair with matching silver and gold gilded masks. More than most went with Venina styles. All unaware of the interloper.   Slithering between the throne. His gaze was limited by his plain mask.  How safe they believe themselves to be, Voldemort thought. Foolish to allow masks. Not when a group dons them to wage war against them. Still a few sense something off about it. They shiver as Voldemort slithers by. A chill of moral danger. But Voldemort wasn’t here for them. Spying his intended overlooking the dance floor on a balcony. He came up from behind her. Smelling the fragrant she wore on her neck. Merging into her slight shadow.  Leaning over to whisper in her ear; “Mademoiselle you are not dancing. Surely your date has not abandoned you? Least for someone else to take your fancy.”

Had it been any other soirée dansante in Paris, Nagini would have felt exposed and vulnerable and dread would have clung to her like a second skin. Over the course of her wretched life as an Underbeing, she had seen too much to entertain the delusion that she belonged for a mere instant, not when she was acutely aware of the wand she was barred from carrying, of the power, dignity, and agency she thus lacked compared to the witches and wizards surrounding her.

The relative anonymity granted by masquerade balls such as the one she attended that night did not dispel her discomfort in its entirety, yet at the very least, she did not feel quite as naked with her features concealed behind a plain mask of sufficiently convincing faux silver.

There had been rumors that Credence would be there – or rather Corvus Lestrange, the boy who had (mercifully) died in Credence’s stead and who was still falsely rumored to be his true identity.

Expecting to be dismissed a second time without a glance back, Nagini foolishly found herself aching to know he was at least all right, that – despite her fear and disapproval of Grindelwald and his pureblood supporters – he had found a home, the sense of belonging she had been unable to offer.

Minutes of discretely surveying the masked crowd from her vantage point on a balcony, however, soon turned into two agonizing hours, and despite knowing that her chances of finding him her had been infinitesimal at best, her heart nonetheless sank at her inability to detect a whiff of his familiar scent, the hint of ash and charcoal emanating from his pores.

‘Half an hour,’ she decided. ‘I will stay for another half an hour, but then, I’ll give up.Leave before they notice I’m not one of them.’

But then, all of a sudden, there was a subtle shift in the air, a lone masked wizard weaving his way through the crowd, who was different from the others, different and infinitely more dangerous.

It was evident that even those not cursed with a beast’s enhanced senses intuitively responded to that truth, shivering and angling their torsi so as to facilitate his passage.

It was with a vehement surge of dread that Nagini realized that the stranger was heading towards her, pinning her in place with his eyes alone.

She couldn’t move a single muscle, overwhelmed by the dizzying assault on her senses.

His deep, melodious voice caressed her ear in a tantalizing whisper; the pitch-black magic he exuded ensnared her, its distinct flavor rich on her tongue like expensive dark chocolate.

Nagini had to summon every ounce of her willpower to adopt an air of stoicism.

“I apologize for the misunderstanding, Monsieur, but I’m an interpreter, not a guest,” she lied, her tone polite yet distant. “As my employer no longer requires my services, I intend to take my leave.”

Despite the wariness and caution ingrained in her every bone, Nagini found herself lingering for just another moment, granting the enigmatic stranger an opportunity to persuade her otherwise.

ughghghhghgh. oh boy oh boyyyy. (thank you ❤️) more jean centric and this is kinda sad???

if jean is already hauling floch's ass into the plane, that means the jeanbo that we are dealing here isnt thinking straight and is already in protective jean mode. (logical jean would probably put him on the boat) first of all, the most awkward plane ride ever!! the scouts and onyankopon are perplexed (and mad) at jean. warriors are confused at the random dying ginger. during the rumbling fight jean is extra extra protective towards his comrades as his ptsd (from seeing floch almost dying) starts to manifest. all in all he still kicks ass. twice as hard.

post rumbling: (lets just ignore the titanization part just so that i can have more angst) floch somehow survives and gets the proper treatment, he's in comatose from the prolonged exposed wound, excessive blood loss, infection idk the whole package. jean is his primary caretaker. connie stayed mad at jean. armin lowkey mad too and things are awkward between them. jean is 100% miserable bc his friends hates him. surprisingly, levi came to be the one who understands him the most. (bc floch is erwin lite and jean is levi lite) reiner tried his best to be there for jean bc jean was there for him but he's probably unsure how to help bc he's still all "who is this redhead man???"

based on jean's canon fear of seeing his comrade die, seeing someone he cares about almost dying elicited a more severe reaction out of him. bc friends dying, thats easy for jean, the pain will pass but seeing them survive especially with a injury that is probably permanent? especially one where he know he could have done something to prevent? thats too much for him. floch eventually woke up but jean has serious ptsd, maybe getting some nightmares, thinks floch is a hallucination or a ghost. he turns down the offer to join the peace ambassador. floch actually became better mentally and kinda softer bc NDE and they never returned to paradis but chose to stick around with levi and co.

(gnawing at my enclosure) like in this scenario i keep thinking about, it’s ross waiting for you to show up to like an intimate gathering of friends and you’ve met the boys and everyone before through charli cause that’s bestie (need her expeditiously) and you and ross really hit it off!! his head is full of nothing but thoughts of you!! so he’s clearly distracted until you get there then he’s all smiles and laughs and gentle touches (need to be institutionalized) but ALSO until you get there he’s all impatient and antsy asking charli if you let her know what time you’d be there but he asks it more than once so everyone starts teasing him for having a crush and then they tease him even more once you get there cause his whole demeanor changes i’m thinking many normal thoughts 😍😍😍

yes, absolutely, you've been introduced to their friend group through charli because she is the fucking coolest and makes an offhanded comment like "hmmm you know what now that you're single, there's someone i wanna introduce you to" (that someone being ross obv) and you do absolutely hit it off but maybe you're both a bit shy at first to ask each other out immediately. like you like each other a lot and worry that the other might not feel the same but oh lordddd he is so down bad.

he's quite good at hiding it though, or maybe he thinks he's quite good at hiding it 🤭 like he won't go up to charli and directly ask her when you're coming. he'd instead just casually be like "oh, thought your friend was coming too, isn't she?" all cool and aloof as if he doesn't care, he's just 'curious' but charli instantly clocks it and smirks at him like "well, aren't you curious!!! she's running a bit late don't worry. she'll be here in 15, i just got a text from her."

and he spends the next 15 minutes trying not to hover near the door so he can be the one to open it once the doorbell rings. anyway, he isn't the one to open it--george is. and you go around saying hello to people and hugging both george and charli before you shyly wave at ross and fix your hair a bit (self conscious, it was kinda windy outside and ross finds it so adorable that your hair is all unruly and messy in a very effortlessly sexy way)

charli immediately hooks her arm with yours and pulls you towards ross and goes "so ross is really good at making cocktails and you were saying how you were gasping for a good martini!" and then she sorta pushes you both together towards her home bar and says "go ahead, use whatever you like"

while your back is turned she also throws a wink at ross who rolls his eyes and mouths a silent thank you (she really is a good wingwoman) and well turns out he is really good at making cocktails. you even comment on it and he's like "come on i'll teach you." so you hold the shaker in your hands a bit unsure until you feel him right behind you and so close that you can almost feel the heat radiating off him. his cologne is mouth-wateringly good and you fucking want to turn around and pull him into a kiss.

he is no better tho--his heart is fucking hammering in his chest because he really does fancy you so much and you're so fucking close to him. so he does the second best thing which is wrapping his hand over yours under the guise of teaching you how to make a martini.

your hand is so small and soft in his and it's like the first time he's ever properly touched you so he feels like he's fucking sixteen again. no one is paying attention to the martini, you're both just busy blushing and being idiots in general. <3

hey veeeeeee. was going back to the reijean intelligence post and thinking about jean being a bad manipulator has more to do with him just refusing to do so as opposed to him not having the skill/ability to do it. here me out!! trost jean successfully rallied the cadets after mikasa's failed attempt. post trost corpsefire, jean made a speech about joining the scouts and accidentally made like connie/sasha join the sc with him. convince reimin (more to armin who is scared shitless) to stop the female titan. mindfuck marlowe to help the sc in uprising. also duh reijean titanic scene is self explanatory. what all of them had in common is that jean doesnt have any malicious intent behind his words when he tries to rally/goad people into doing things. he is actually pretty charismatic and persuasive especially when he is all hyped up himself. we're just lucky honesty is like his most important trait. i think he does have the potential to be a charming psychopath (lmao) if he ever walks the dark path. terrifying tbh considering he's not really trying that hard in those situations above.

I totally get what you mean.

The things you mentioned, like Jean encouraging his fellow cadets to follow him in Trost, I do attribute to his charisma. Like you said, his intentions are good. He’s also the first one to run after Mikasa. While Reiner likes to have others do his job for him, Jean does it himself. He encourages people by taking the first step. He sets an example – Conny and Sasha decided to join the Scouts only after he had decided to join them. It’s the fact he takes action that inspires the others. 

One of the times Jean does something for — arguably — bad reasons is, again, when he saves Reiner in Shiganshina. Sure, he wants to protect his childhood friend. Sure, he’s still only a child himself. But Reiner is a traitor and a murderer. Jean is defending him at a literal graveyard Reiner helped to build. Jean knows saving Reiner equals treason. Choosing Reiner over the dead bodies around them is something he could be hanged for.

In the end he reaches his goal, but we can’t call him a good actor. He is unable to mask his true feelings. Mikasa knows he’s speaking up in Reiner’s defense. Hange knows they’re being manipulated. But they choose to excuse him.

I agree that Jean refuses to use and develop the “manipulator” skill. I don’t think he’s incapable of doing bad things because that’s certainly not the case. If he put his mind to it, I’m sure he could learn how to manipulate people properly. He knows the basics, the potential is there. But I have a feeling the execution would always be a huge problem for him. He’s too honest, tries to stay true to himself too hard and can’t control his temper – all of which put him at a disadvantage.

Reiner managed to befriend his mortal enemies and lived with them for three years under the same roof. I can’t imagine Jean doing the same thing. Not with Eren around, lol. If that had been the case, we would have had the “I’m the Armored and he’s the Colossal” reveal three days into the training. 

Let me put it this way: I would NOT trust Jean to manipulate, mansplain, manslaughter his way out of a situation. But I would trust Reiner to do that. :)) And that’s great. I love Reiner for that, too. What Reiner tries to take by force, Jean tries to win fairly. It’s admirable, but it doesn’t always get the job done. It’s a dark, cruel world they live in.

That being said, I absolutely love it when people experiment with Jean in fics. I’m dying to read or write about dark!Jean who finally snaps. :3
