How to write a summary (the cheater's method)

I've written about this subject before (and I know I'm not the only one), but I still see people struggling with it pretty much daily. So here's my cheat sheet for how to produce a story summary that focuses on the story's essentials.

There are five pieces of information that need to exist in every summary:

Where and when the story takes place (for example, Victorian London, a nuclear submarine, a moon colony, a pseudo-medieval forest full of elves).

Who the main character is (for example, a young royal, an apprentice mage, a space marine, the eldest of five unmarried sisters).

What the main character wants (for example, to win a war, to prove their innocence, to get married, to survive in the apocalypse).

And, critically, why I, the reader, should care about it. This last one is hardest to give pithy examples for, but that only emphasizes how important it is.

I will give a more detailed example of why each item on the list is necessary behind the fold, using my own story, Turncoat Chronicle.

Where and when: TC takes place in a pseudo-Renaissance low fantasy setting. This tells you that if you enjoy the feudal dynamics of fantasy, you might enjoy this story, but if you mainly like fantasy for its magic and monsters, you probably won't.

Who: TC's MC is the heir of a king notorious for taking his throne by force. This tells you that if you love playing wealthy, privileged characters, you might vibe with the MC. On the other hand, if you're bored of fantasy that focuses on the monarchy, you probably won't.

What: The central conflict of TC is between the MC staying loyal to their father, or betraying him and siding with his worst enemy. This tells you that if you like stories about difficult choices and conflicting loyalties, TC might be for you.

Why: The stakes for TC are established early on. If the MC sides with his family's enemy, they will have to kill their father. On the other hand, if they side with their father, they will lose the opportunity to end a generation-long grudge. If you are interested in games that allow you to make history, these stakes might appeal to you.

At every step along the way, the summary is designed to help you gain readers who would enjoy your story and lose readers who would find it dissatisfying. The goal is to bring stories to the attention of those who are most looking for them as efficiently as possible, through the medium of a concise and informative summary.

These are the kinds of elements that I look for in a summary when I'm looking for stories to read.

I have played episode 1 of MCL New Gen. I got uncle Archibald, the nice desk and Amanda's illustration. Here is a summary of the episode.

You start this episode in your room. It is your first day at your new job. You just woke up before your alarm clock. You are a bit nervous about your first day. It is almost time for breakfast. You go downstairs to your mother and sister.

Your mother and sister are at the breakfast table. Your sister doesn't want to go to her dad because she has plans with her friends. Her dad lives too far away to be able to see her friends. She wants to stay here and that you look out for her. But that is not your responsibilities according to your mother. Your mother asks you what you want to drink. You choose a cup of tea. Your mother is going to London. You will have the house to your self in the meantime. Your mother is saving your life. You won't impose for long. Your mother is happy that she can help you. You may stay as long as you need. Your mother severs you some breakfast, you have to start this day good. What are actually your expectations for this job. You want to succeed in your job. Your sister thinks that is a good idea. And you should be able to since your mother pulled some strings. But she didn't, she only gave you the phone number of Devon after he told her that he was looking for someone. You were quickly hired after a 10-minute phone call. Your mother thinks it will work out. Then your sister warns you not to sleep with your boss, especially to not do it when he is married. Your mother is saying that you didn't know that he was married. He hides everything from you. The hole office knew about it and nobody warned you. When you found out, you left town. Your mother start to think about what would have happened if you didn't find out. You told her not to worry about it. Your first focus lies now on the new job. But you are still in your comfortable outfit. You head back up to put on some work clothes. There is only one outfit to choose. You go back downstairs, your pet goose, Taki wishes you good luck. You give your mother and sister a hug, it is time to go to work.

You go outside your house to the bus stop. There you meet your uncle Archibald (he is the fairy in this story). You ask him what he is donging here. He asks you if you remember Agatha. Agatha has asked your uncle to come here. And now, as your mother lives here, your uncle saw that as a sign. He didn't know you would be here two. You are for now living with your mother. You ask your uncle to keep an eye open for a good apartment. In the meantime, he has something for you. You get a worky-worky costume for your pet. You thank him and you go on the bus.

The bus takes you to the center of town. Then someone runs into you. He can't understand how he didn't notice you. It is the same for you when you are running. You get lost in your thought and forget everything around you. The guy has to leave. The same goes for you. You have to go to work. You walk towards the Devenementiel building and ring the bell. But no one opens the door. You ring the bell again, still no one answers. You ring the bell for the third time. Then someone stands behind you. He knows your name. You are about to start today. It is Thomas, he is taking care of the administrative details for your position. He is not happy that he has to be here so early. You are also not a morning person. But it won't take long.

Thomas and you walk inside. He guides you to the most neutral desk. That is where Thomas sits. He pulls up a chair for you. He is the IT and EvDev Technologies manager. Thomas does all the IT stuff. It is almost like he doesn't like paperwork. And indeed he doesn't like it. But all the stuff for you is almost already finished. He found everything online, even a photo for your tag. But the photo is funny, you will get used to it. Thomas is curious what is funny. It is not a standard work photo, it is a bit quirky. But it is a photo of you, and you are looking at the camera, and you are beautiful. You ask if he really thinks so. It was just an observation. But Thomas thinks you have a lot of money with what he found out about you. You have made a few trips and your mother has one of the best architect companies. But it is your mother who is rich, not you. Thomas has seen some of her work. He likes it.  You actually now live with your mother. Then you won't be competing with Amanda. She likes her title of being the rich girl here. But Devon doesn't mind money. If you work good, you will be okay at Devenementiel. The others will arrive soon. You ask if Thomas will show you around. He signs. You hope he introduces you to everyone. You start with the break area. There you see Elenda and Brune. Thomas thinks you will get along with them. Then show you the canteen and takes you to Devon's office. Devon is the boss, he hired you. Thomas leaves the room. Devon seems a lot warmer than he sounds on the phone. Devon will introduce you to everyone at 10 o'clock. Then the phone goes, Devon change back into a serious person.

You leave the room and walk into Amanda. You shake her hand, smiling. Amanda is in charge of accountant and management. She also takes care of art and luxury events. You know a bit about that, maybe you will work together. Devon will decide abut that. Then Roy walks toward you two. He recognizes you from this morning, he was running into you. Roy is happy Devon found a replacement. Hopefully you won't pull the same trick as the other girl did. She is working now for Goldreamz, the competition of Devenementiel. But let's get to work. Amanda and Roy both go to their own desk. You walk towards yours, but there is no chair. Roy let you choose a chair. You choose a cute, comfy desk. It is almost the same as Amanda. You walk back towards the break room. There you see Brune and Elenda again. They have a lot of questions for you. You ask if they could write them down. Brune likes that reaction. Elenda and Brune both think they will like you and get along. They ask where you worked before. You tell them you worked at EMPC. They know the company, it is a very big one. Is that the reason you left. Yes, it was horrible over there. All the people were not really nice. The mood is often worse at big companies. They have to get back to work. You walk towards the meeting room. There is Amanda on her own. She asks if she could help you. You say maybe. You are still trying to find your way. Amanda just came here early to find a minute of peace before the meeting. You suggest leaving, but Amanda is okay. She tells you not to take it too personally with what Roy said earlier about the girl before you. Amanda is curious what your story is. Thomas told her you were rich. Thomas told you the same about Amanda. Amanda doesn't hide it. She comes from a very private family. You don't like to put your life on display. You wanted to be treated the same, even if your mother is rich. You don't have to worry about that here, nobody cares here. It is almost time for the meeting. Amanda tries to order her paperwork, but it falls on the ground. You help her pick up the papers. You get the illustration and a special scene with Amanda. Amanda will blush after you touch hands to pick up the same paper. She doesn't know what got into her. You tell her that this can happen to everyone. To let some papers fall. Normally this doesn't happen to Amanda, it is more due to what is going on. Devon is a bit stressed and that makes Amanda also stressed. You are also stressed because it is your first day. You give all the papers back to Amanda. Then everyone walks into the room. Devon will give a speech to introduce you. He tells everyone to accept you for who you are. To not see you as a replacement, but as a new member of the team. And hopefully this will take the company to a good new path. Everyone applause, and you think you will feel at home here. The episode ends.

Hi, I've been a fan of J2 for some time now but I've never come across the tin hat fandom (do I call it correctly?) before (i always adored their interactions but never actually considered that they could have an actual romantic relationship that's not just in my mind haha) and I'm intrigued now. Could you please point me in the direction of some masterposts about them? Would love to read more about it! & also about their wives and kids bc I don't quite understand how it would be possible for them to maintain a beard-marriage for so long and also to have kids (??)

You’re about to start a wild ride into the heart of this decade point five romance between Jared and Jensen that will absolutely have you supergluing your tinhat onto your head just like the rest of us (as is always the case when anyone decides to really delve deeply enough into what’s been going on between the Js ever since their paths merged so many years ago).

Option 1: You've saved your friend from a magical disability that unmoors their body from your existence, and a powerful enemy has just destroyed the artifact you created to anchor her here, and if you don't get out of the battle quick, you might lose her forever.

Option 2: You discover you have an unwanted magical destiny that you can't avoid. The girl of your dreams could also share this magical destiny with you, but only if you recruit her yourself, irreversibly tying her to that destiny which she otherwise could have been saved from and you wish you yourself could be saved from.

Option 3: You're in a Groundhog Day cycle that you started and could end at any time full of grief and pain, but you went into this to save your friend from an inevitable decision to help others; however, each time your 'day' starts, it makes the consequences you're trying to avoid that much worse if it comes to pass

Option 4: You've found the spirit of the dead man who is most important to you in the world, who you spent your life with. You can give him a semblance of a life, but the caveat is that he will experience it through you, sharing your body, meaning you can't ever be sentient/conscious at the same time - sharing an existence but never able to interact

Option 5: You are fated to die, but your lover takes your place, and you're so scared you don't stop them. In a twist, she is returned, brought back from the dead, but she never speaks again despite continuing on in her life with you.

Option 6: You die saving the world for the second time after hard battles and tragic losses. Death brings paradise and peace, and you are happy, but your party hasn't been able to live with the death and resurrect you back into life where you have to continue the fight that caused all the losses.

Option 7: You've fallen in love with a girl caught in space. There is a limited corridor of physical space she exists within that doesn't allow for her to feel the rain falling or the comforts of a cozy bed. You've never known actual magic or sci fi to exist in the real world, and yet you may perhaps be the only person who can puzzle out how to free her from this reality unmoored from any existing known occurrences.

Option 8: You've found love and a life with the woman of your dreams, but it is a taboo love, and she is too afraid of her deep feelings for you. She decides to marry someone who will be kind to her and help her advance in her goals in life, but she wants to keep you too, have you live with them in a seemingly respectable role while you are her mistress. You know there is no world in which you will be happy with that arrangement.

There was never going to be enough space for these and they were kind of hard to come up with / remember, so only 8 options for this one! XD

Plot Summary:

Tubbo is a passionate inventor and entrepreneur who owns a thriving factory that produces various AI and robots.

One day, Tubbo stumbles upon a unique AI named Fred while perusing a digital marketplace for potential employees. Intrigued by Fred's distinct personality and curiosity, Tubbo decides to purchase WA02 for an experimental project.

He believes that Fred's apparent lack of understanding of human emotions could be an advantage in his latest venture: developing AI companions to help people navigate their complex emotions.

As Tubbo and Fred start working together, Tubbo begins to teach Fred about emotions, starting with the basics. They spend time together, going on picnics, discussing feelings, and even watching sunsets. You start this episode in the van. The dogs get up from the place where they were sleeping and start wagging with their tails. That can only mean one thing. Kentin comes inside the van and asks if you had a good day. The dogs jump up on Kentin and Kentin hugs them back. Then you pull Kentin towards you to kiss him. Your day was not bad, you saw Rosa, Alexy and Thia and eat ice cream with them. Kentin's day was a little bit tiring, because the customers were tiring. But after work he went to his parents. His parents are doing good, they are still really excited about the wedding. They asked all kinds of questions about the wedding. The wedding is only weeks away, and you two haven't done much of the preparation. But you two have a place for the wedding. Kentin looks a bit tired. The last two months, Kentin worked multiply jobs. You try to cheer him up with some food. Kentin has the week for the wedding free. Like planned. Kentin can't wait. The food is ready. Kentin sets the table outside and you two go sit and eat. The day after tomorrow you two are going to choose the rings in the morning, then Kentin is free. You also arrange to go to the caterer this Friday. It was the only spot they had left. But Kentin can't, he has to work. If he works this Friday, you are able to choose every menu you want. But you want Kentin to go with you. You don't care about that. You just want Kentin to be with you, and do those things with you. Kentin will call his boss tomorrow and change his schedule. You thank him for it. It is the wedding for the both of you. It is much more fun to do those things together. Kentin smiles at you. You are right, Kentin is excited to do those things with you. But Kentin is very tired now. Kentin and you clear up the table and go to bed. You have problem falling a sleep. You are a bit worried that Kentin is working too much. Kentin has been working so hard because of the wedding. He really wants it to be the best. But you haven't seen him a lot since he is working so hard. You didn't imagine organizing, and the time before your wedding, would be like this. If things go on like this, you have to talk about it with Kentin. The next day started normal. You confirmed the caterer for Friday. You walk the dogs and work as a waitress at the Cozy bear café. But when you get back, Kentin is already at the van. Kentin asked to get free for Friday, and it didn't go well. His boss was not happy that Kentin wanted free, after he arranged everything that Kentin could work more hours. Kentin requested it. You ask Kentin why he did that. He is already working enough. Kentin did because of the wedding. You ask Kentin what is going on. You and him have enough money for a wedding. We are in the budget if we stick to what we said. But Kentin wants to be able to do the things big without any limit. It is a really important moment for most girls. For Kentin, of course also. But he wants you to have the wedding of your dreams. That you could just choose any ring or dress you want, and that you don't have to look at the price tag. You can't help but smile, Kentin is so cute. You feel like Kentin is the one with the greatest ambition of the two of you. And three weeks of work is not going to change the budget that much. Plus, the choosing is part of the fun. You want to choose things with Kentin. Kentin wants to choose two, but he wants those things to be covered in diamonds. He wishes he can give that to you. Kentin is so sweet. You are very touched to hear him say that. But the rings, cake, dress, it is all decoration. And it makes you happy to do it and choose it. But the most important is Kentin. If it puts this much pressure on him. It is not worth it. The only thing that matters to you is to share everything with Kentin. You would marry Kentin in secret in the back of the van, without hesitation. Kentin smiles at you. Would you really marry him anywhere? Yes, you would even do it in the cave where you found the dog on your last trip. But you have already booked a place. It is better if you take advantaged of that. Kentin cares your cheek. Let's make the wedding day the best day within you two means. Plus, Kentin is already going to give you the best gift, his last name. Kentin is surprised. He didn't know that you had already made up your mind. Kentin's name Lerhay fits you like a glove. Kentin takes you in his arms and spins you around. You would have told him sooner if you knew that it had this effect on him. Kentin is going to call his boss. He is going to participate in all the choosing stuff. His boss has to understand and otherwise who cares. You are both so happy. The wedding rings Hand in hand, Kentin and you walk to the jewelry store. You two first look outside at the window. You both see multiply things you like. But Kentin and you have to choose. Kentin kisses your forehead. He has been in a fantastic mood since yesterday. You both walk inside the store. The sales lady asks if she can help you two. You two would like to see wedding rings. She shows you where they are lying. Kentin and you are pointing out all the rings. It is hard to choose. And seeing them lay on a cushion reminds you that you haven't chosen the ring bearer. It would be logic to go with Cookie or Muffin. So definitely a dog. They both have an important place in your history. But normally a child would do that. You two could ask Thia. She would like it. Or a friend, Alexy is Kentin's best man. Maybe you two could ask Armin. Kentin says that you may choose. You choose to let Cookie and Muffin do it. Each of them would carry one ring. That way, no one is jealous. Maybe Joker and Siska would be. But Kentin is sure they would understand. It will be perfect. Then you two look back at the rings. You are sure. You want the crossed rings. Plus, the ring that fits with it was the first one that Kentin liked. They will look perfect. Kentin gets the sales woman. She takes your measurements and makes sure they are ready. Kentin and you walk out of the store. Kentin can't wait for all the other choices. You are both so happy. Kentin and you walk to the ceremony place. Both your parents are already there. You all hug each other. And then you tell them about the rings you two have chosen. But they don't get to see them, it will be a surprise. The place looks beautiful. It was a little climb to it. You are 1500 feet high. Kentin was the one who chose the place. Kentin knew the guy of the place. He worked for him a few seasons ago. At the altar you have a view of the whole valley. At the bench you have a view of the mountain. It will be safe, there are fences everywhere. Your parents point out that you both look so happy. And you do, who wouldn't be with a place like this. The meal is going to be served in the big building over there. There will also be dancing and you can park your car behind it. Kentin's parents ask if he still manages everything with work. Kentin took some free time for the wedding. Everything is going great. You discuss a lot of other things for the wedding, and the bachelor party will be organized by the maid of honer and the best man. They ask who you choose. Kentin chose Alexy. You asked Kim. The athletic girl who works at the gym. Your mom thinks it is a good choice. You want to ask them their opinion about activity between the ceremony and the meal. It is a good thing. You all come up with things to do. You like the musical chairs option. Kentin likes it a lot, two. Kentin and you walk back to the van. It was a nice moment with both of your parents. Kentin is also still really happy with the rings. And he can't wait to get his suit tomorrow. You also can't wait to see what Rosa has planned.

The Dress Kentin and you are at Leigh's shop with Rosalya and Leigh. They are both really happy to see you. Kentin points out that you should take the dress you want the most and don't care about the price. Rosa will make sure that happens.  Leigh and Kentin leave to get his suit. You stay behind with Rosa. Rosa shows you the dresses. They are all beautiful. There is one Rosa likes the most, but she doesn't want to influence you. You have to discover the one you love on your own. And no matter what you choose, she has a matching outfit for Kim. The same goes for Kentin with Alexy. Rosa tells you a bit about every dress. Then you get to try all the dresses on. As soon as you put on the breathtaking one, you know it is the right one. You get to pick the dress. There is only one option to choose.
