The Classroom Paradox

When I’m teaching, I love the classroom. 

I love the attention and the validation that I get at the front of the room. I love making relationships with students, seeing them grow and know that I had a hand in their success. 

I love challenging, exploring, singing and dancing and discovering with students. I love story telling. I love laughing. I am so happy and fulfilled when I stand and the front of this room. 

But- 

Put me at the back of this very same room, crushed into a plastic chair and 

I hate the classroom. My soul dies. 

I hate sitting in silence, expected to absorb information with the attention and discipline of a ‘mature adult mind’. I hate that maturity is equated with stillness. I hate that ‘grown-up’ really just means ‘quiet’. 

I hate the shudder that rattles my mind as the movement inherent to my body is restricted to the insides of my bones. 

From this chair I want to rage and scream and rend the sky with passion and ideas. 

But I cannot. 

I must sit and absorb with all the vibrance and diligence of a sponge. 

When I teach, I mourn my lack of creativity. I pour all of my artistry into my work, my lessons, my plans, and I am left with only the drab phonetic remains of a picked-over lexicon. 

Where have my words gone? Where has my poetry gone? What happened to the ache in my hands for the art of creation? 

Fie! Fie! The muses are dead!

Thalia is slain! Erato has fallen! Calliope floats, belly up, in the fifty-gallon fish tank of existential inspiration. My art is exhausted. 

I am exhausted. 

But-

Crush me into this damn plastic chair at the back of this classroom- make me the learner, make me a sponge- and life rushes back to my mind with such force it leaves even Pallas Athene breathless. 

The sun rises on my muses and lo-- They are not dead! Merely asleep!

Fat bastards. 

My ass hits the cold, black plastic and Calliope rights herself. 

The creativity flares. 

The words return in an articulate torrent, jostling to be spilled onto paper as professors throw knowledge at the walls of my mind, hoping something sticks 

whilst I struggle to juggle note-taking and prose-making.

Resonate Through Teaching is a vast field where it focuses on many topics that students must learn; various methods for students to learn effectively; creating comfortable and safe learning environments; student-centered materials and systems; and many more. Teachers in the academic field must have pedagogical knowledge in order to educate students not only academically but also for their personal growth. Like Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn," seeing that children must be involved for them to fully learn and be able to apply the teaching that teachers do. And as an English educator in the making, I know there are a wide range of topics to discuss regarding English, but when it comes to the "Sounds of English", there must be a change or amelioration to what I know about grammar, sentence structure, and others. It is different, but given the appropriate and efficient methods, it will be easy and best, not only for the students but also for the teachers. I have come up with the strategies of educational games and audio lessons in discussing the "Sounds of English." In terms of educational games, I’ll have them play some games that’ll test their knowledge of the sounds of English, such as "I Spy" and "Bingo". With the I Spy game, I’ll announce some letters, either the first letter or the last letter of the word, and I’ll have the students guess what word I was asking, but if the students aren’t able to distinguish what the word was or don’t know the letter word, I’ll have them just guess, so at least they tried. Only then will I know if it is correct or what the right word is. And for the Bingo game, I’ll print out some pictures in the format of Bingo grinds, then I’ll announce some letters. If they have the letter, they will have to mark it. For these games to be exciting and for the students to engage, I’ll reward the students who are able to guess the most words or first finish the game. And games will not only help the students in their study of the Sounds of English, but also promote social relationships that can build friendships and friendly atmospheres for everyone. For the audio lessons, I’ll have to play some educational music or audio with the topic of the Sounds of English. I’ll choose music that is energetic and more lively so that the students will also feel the exciting and lively vibe of the music. With the audio, the students will be able to listen to and learn the proper way of pronouncing the sounds. And not only that, music helps students feel at ease, get comfortable and relax in their surroundings. There are many ways to teach lessons to students, but for certain topics, such as the Sound of English, there must be certain ways, as it is different from grammar and sentence structure. Providing them with educational games (I Spy and Bingo) and audio lessons will be most effective for teaching sounds, and in addition, it will benefit their learning and social connections. We know that knowledge is the most wonderful gift teachers can offer to their students. However, to touch and resound what they teach through their students' hearts is what makes it meaningful. The teachers' number one priority is to lead them to this beautiful path. Teaching students in this world of sounds denotes understanding, expression, emotions, thoughts, and life, all of which are interconnected with sounds.

My Demo Teaching Experience

As an education student, I enrolled in this course through an online learning system, and there were numerous challenges I faced as a student. Demonstration teaching is already a big part of this course; it’s like your educ moments would not be complete without demonstration teaching. I've already experienced demo teaching, but online, and I admit that there’s a big difference between performing it online and face-to-face. If you are not satisfied with your performance, you can repeat and edit it in the online demo class, where the students are imaginary. While doing face-to-face demo teaching, there are a lot of things that you need to consider. When I find out that we will have our face-to-face demo teaching in this subject, the first thing I feel is nervousness and pressure because I don't know if I will be able to perform and deliver my lesson very well if I will be able to connect with my students, and a lot of pressure because it's my first time, and I truly know that there are a lot of things to consider. As I start my lesson, I create a lesson plan considering the use of technological tools since it’s the goal to have and apply those technological tools in my lesson to demonstrate teaching. Familiarizing the lesson, knowing the flow of my lesson, creating appropriately the IMS that I will utilize, and, of course, preparing myself. The moment I entered the classroom, the feeling of being a student teacher was already there; it was already real, and the students were not imaginary. As I finished my demo teaching, it was a big relief for me, and from the moment it all started up until the end, I can’t explain what I have felt, but one thing I know is that I am happy and grateful to have had this experience. I learned from this face-to-face demo teaching that you really need to master your lesson, carefully analyze how you will carry out each component of the lesson, and most importantly, be confident and trust yourself because everything will fall into place if you consider all of these. In addition to being happy and grateful about this experience because I surpassed it, I'm also grateful because my instructor gave me advice and made remarks that were really motivating to hear. I will use those as motivation to improve as a student teacher.
