Aragorn 2023 LotR Musical references

Today is St Sidwell’s Day. Sidwell had a bad end. She was an heiress murdered by her jealous step mother who coveted her land. Sainthood followed when a spring bubbled up from the spot where Sidwell’s murderess chopped off her head with a scythe. The chapel of St Sidwell was built next to the resultant healing well. The possibly rather darker origins of the saint are hinted at by the fact the name Sidwell derives from the words scythe and well, possibly deriving from a pagan harvest sacrifice at Lughnasad.

Today, perhaps not so coincidentally, is the anniversary of the death of King William II while out hunting in the New Forest. Widely loathed, William Rufus (so-called because of his red hair) was killed by an arrow in mysterious circumstances. It has been suggested that William may have been a blood sacrifice to Lugh, the evidence being that royal blood was allowed to drench the ground and that William’s body was left lying where it fell in the forest itself. The ritual killing of a year king at harvest time is held to be a staple of many ancient agrarian religions. It is however equally likely was that the king was struck by a stray arrow and his fellow hunters panicked and fled, fearing they would be blamed for the death of the monarch.

I love Sara and Des but I had to literally pause this week’s episode and calm myself down because of how much they were making me angry. Like yes, Des, I am a team Jacob girlie and I am a Jeremiah girlie, both of these characters were done so dirty in the last book of their respective series.
