These tags by @clonecumber on this post about Jedi reminded me of something about the concept of “attachment” in Buddhism that might be interesting and helpful for thinking about it in Star Wars, especially with regard to Anakin.
So, for the Buddhist concept, the word that’s being translated in English as “attachment” is upadana. The literal meaning of upadana in the Pali language is “fuel,” but in an abstract sense you’ll see it translated as “clinging” or “grasping.”
Buddhism says that there’s a set of factors that goes into how a person experiences and interacts with the world, or part of how they construct their identity and the idea of ‘self.’ In Pali this is kandha and translated with words like “aggregate” or “bundle,” coming from the sense of a bundle of stems/branches or the trunk as the union/aggregate of all branches of a tree.
There are five of these aggregates/kandhas. One kind of kandha is physical, sensual things. If you think of material wealth as a bundle of branches, being greedy and clinging to/grasping for it is like pouring gasoline over the wood and throwing down a match, creating fire (suffering) when you steal from people, exploit them, etc. Each factor/kandha is something that upadana--clinging or attachment--is directed towards, and eliminating attachment/clinging/upadana is part of how you can stop creating suffering.
Material things are the only purely physical kandha. The others include emotions (where fear gets a special mention), states of mind, and even things like how you view yourself and what you believe about the world. When Yoda talks about how fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering, he’s echoing the idea that fear of loss and change in a world where the nature of things is to constantly change is what spurs people to cling to things, to form attachments.
When Anakin’s mom is kidnapped and beaten by Tuskens, he’s ultimately unable to save her and must confront a very sharp, painful loss. His worst fear from his nightmare has been realized. Instead of reaching out and trying to process/deal with his grief and pain in a healthy way, he lets anger get the better of him and he massacres all the Tuskens in the encampment. All he’s done is spread suffering and murder. This does nothing to help his mother, the Lars family, or victims of literally any party of ongoing land/water disputes on Tatooine. Everything that happened here was purely about Anakin and his impulse to take revenge, jumping down the fear->anger->hate->suffering train like a slip-n-slide.
Anakin routinely has a really hard time undercutting his own upadana, his grasping at and attachment to things that must and will change, must pass. Whenever Obi-wan tells him to “be mindful of [his] feelings,” he doesn’t mean that Anakin just needs to check himself and do some introspection whenever he’s angry or feeling a negative emotion. He’s reminding Anakin that he needs to do some consideration and introspection for all feelings, negative and positive, to think about the relationship between kandhas and upadana.
Anakin doesn’t need to learn that anger and hate are bad. He needs to learn that even positive things like love can be the objects of attachment/upadana, and that’s the clinging demonstrated in his inability to accept death and loss--however shocking and painful--as a natural process, setting him down Yoda’s cycle of fear, anger, hate, and suffering, unable to walk way.

Tony, the futurist
Buckle in folks, I've had some thoughts and I'm about to make it ✨everyone's✨ problem.
Been thinking about Tony Stark, the futurist who saw the end of the world.
Tony, who in IM1 escapes kidnapping and torture and says, "I shouldn't be alive. Unless if was for a reason."
Tumblr media
who, in The Avengers, has this exchange with Bruce Banner:
Tony: You know, I've got a cluster of shrapnel, trying every second to crawl its way into my heart. This stops it. This little circle of light. It's part of me now, not just armor. It's a… terrible privilege. Bruce: But you can control it. Tony: Because I learned how. Bruce: It's different. Tony: Hey, I've read all about your accident. That much gamma exposure should've killed you. Bruce: So you're saying that the Hulk… the other guy… saved my life? That's nice. It's a nice sentiment. Saved it for what? Tony: I guess we'll find out. Bruce: You might not like that. Tony: You just might.
Right after this, Cap tells Tony, "You're not the guy to make the sacrifice play, to lay down on a wire and let the other guy crawl over you."
And then Tony flies a nuke into a wormhole, tries to call his girlfriend because he thinks these are his last moments, did not go in there expecting to survive.
Tumblr media
Although he survives, he witnesses an alien army so terrifying, so unbeatable, it gives him crippling PTSD nightmares and panic attacks, knowing they are not prepared to defend the earth.
Tumblr media
I'm thinking about Tony who, in AOU, gets manipulated by Wanda into witnessing his worst nightmare.
Tumblr media
Which, by the way, involves losing all of his newfound friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Later, he has this exchange with Nick Fury:
Tony: And I'm the man who killed the Avengers. I saw it. I didn't tell the team, how could I? I saw them all dead, Nick. I felt it. The whole world, too. It's because of me. I wasn't ready. I didn't do all I could. Fury: The Maximoff girl, she's working you, Stark. Playing on your fear. Tony: I wasn't tricked, I was shown. It wasn't a nightmare, it was my legacy. The end of the path I started us on. Fury: You've come up with some pretty impressive inventions, Tony. War isn't one of them. Tony: I watched my friends die. You'd think that'd be as bad as it gets, right? Nope. Wasn't the worst part. Fury: The worst part is that you didn't.
Tony's worst fear is to survive in a world he's failed to save. He has to "do all [he] could" or else the future he's terrified of will happen and it will be his fault.
(Not to put too fine a point on it, but there's a reason why Tony and Peter are so compatible as mentor and mentee.)
Tumblr media
Tony's seen what's coming, and he's willing to do whatever it takes.
Here's the thing, though:
Tony doesn't actually want to die.
In AOU, when they're arguing about why he created Ultron, Tony says this to Cap:
"Isn't that the mission? Isn't that the 'why we fight'? So we get to go home?"
Tumblr media
He tells Bruce that the reason they should create Ultron is to have "peace in our time."
He tells Pepper that his constant tinkering, his inability to ever, ever rest is because he needs to keep her safe from the oncoming threat.
Tumblr media
Tony has a life he wants to protect, people he wants to keep safe. And, unlike the other Avengers, he knows exactly how impossible this will be to achieve.
Tony is the only Avenger who understands how severely outmatched they are. Maybe Thor understands the threat, but he has no ability to imagine losing.
Tony tries to get them to understand:
Tony: Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing three hundred feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but, that up there? That's… that's the end game. How were you guys planning on beating that? Steve: Together. Tony: We'll lose. Steve: Then we'll do that together, too.
Well, they do lose. And they don't do it together.
And it turns out Tony was right about everything.
Tumblr media
He was right that he would survive to face his world that he'd failed to save.
Tumblr media
He was right that the Avengers would not be enough.
Tumblr media
He was right that Bruce's powers would be worthwhile someday.
And, apparently,
Tumblr media
some people think he was right that he was only alive for this reason.
Because, obviously, the only "reason" for someone like Tony Stark to be alive is to eventually sacrifice himself, right?
A character so traumatized can only find peace in death.
Right?
No.
Stop that.
Tony Stark may have been willing to risk his life for his family, but that doesn't mean he wanted that to be his end.
Remember when this happened?
Bruce: Saved it for what? Tony: I guess we'll find out. Bruce: You might not like that. Tony: You just might.
Bruce gets to live long enough to like his ending.
Remember when this happened?
Tumblr media
All Tony ever wanted to do was make the world a better place.
And, what about this?
Tumblr media
You're telling me that Yinsen didn't value family above all else?
Tumblr media
That he thought Tony should die and leave them behind?
Tumblr media
No.
Tony Stark is a futurist.
He is the Cassandra of the MCU. He warns the others constantly of the oncoming threat that only he, apparently, can see. (Even Thanos calls him "cursed with knowledge.")
No one believes him. Alone, he tries to prepare for the threat that he has witnessed. He sits with his nightmares and tries to find a way around them, constantly.
He builds a life worth living, finds people worth protecting, just like Yinsen told him to.
To protect the future, he does all he possibly can.
Tumblr media
Tony deserved to be part of the future too.

Bird Symbolism in the Fukufuku Breakup Scene
Ok silly title aside, I need to write this up quickly because the addition of these birds to the anime in this scene made me insane I think.
Tumblr media
[ID: A screenshot from Bungou Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 9. Two long-legged water birds, the left a smaller white bird, and the right a larger grey, stand knee-deep in the water. The colours are bright - the water is a bright crystal blue and pink cherry blossom petals have fallen on its surface. The green of the grass on the opposite bank can be seen in the background. End ID.]
The gray bird flies onto the scene as Fukuchi starts his conversation with Fukuzawa. They speak as friends. But then the conversation turns to the war, and Fukuchi's growing rank and reputation. The gray bird flies off, alone.
Seems pretty obvious. Two birds. One flies away. I could quote the Regina Spektor song for pain if you want.
But I wanted to dig into it because, well, firstly because I made a mistake. I thought, when I glanced at them on my first watch, that these were cranes and lost my actual mind, but on looking at them again, they aren't... but the symbolism became even more intriguing.
The white bird looks to be a Little Egret, and the grey a Grey Heron. I have pictures here so you can see I'm not just making things up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two pictures of real birds, one a Little Egret, and the other a Grey Heron. End ID.]
Both herons and egrets are symbols of grace and dignity. This is suitable for both characters, who are well-respected for their skill and are considered honourable men. Egrets in particular are considered messengers, which may be reminiscent of Fukuzawa's "middle man" type position at this point, not a member of any particular organization, while herons are said to be able to move across three elements, which makes them powerful symbols of divinity, reminding me of Mirror Lion and its capacity to amplify any weapon's power, or perhaps his overblown-heroic reputation. Overall, the birds have fairly similar meanings, grouped as auspicious birds (together with cranes), and are symbols of longevity, especially when paired (being monogamous pair-bonding species - at least seasonally).
But there is a significant difference between the symbolism of the two birds.
The egret is also a symbol of solitude. The heron, a symbol of duty.
So when the heron looks to the egret, it is looking for a partner to join it in its duty it must fulfill. The egret, however, is a solitary creature by nature, and must refuse. The pairing isn't just broken in this scene - the birds were never compatible in the first place. What the heron requires is not something the egret can give. They go their own separate paths to handle things in the way they do best - the heron leaves to somewhere far away to carry out its duty to its comrades, while the egret, independent of this duty, attempts to end the same fight in its own way, alone. And yet... as the heron flies away, the egret still turns its head to watch it leave.
In this sense, also, the longevity symbolism is broken too. To have one of these birds fly off and leave the other one - something that should've been long-lasting, this partnership, is cut short, ended abruptly.
...Which brings me to the cherry blossoms. They're everywhere in this scene, and I'm pretty sure we all know they are symbols of the transience of life, etc. The tree that separates the two in the scene, the petal being cut in half - cherry blossoms are not only symbols of transience, but also of the importance of treasuring such fleeting moments. Here, these moments are shattered. Their time is at an end.
When Fukuchi and Fukuzawa meet again, they will be forever changed by the events that occurred during their separation.
It's just a really nice adaptation of the scene.

HD Erised 2023 - Sitp recs
Hello hello! I’ve been trying to get back into the reading zone and Erised came at the perfect time. I thought I’d share my favorites as I slowly make my way through it, mostly to keep track of my reads and also because it’s been so long since I did a fest list (please don’t mind my very much incomplete Fan Fair list while I kick off another one 🙈 so much to read, so little time!). These were great fun and I can’t wait to see what’s coming up next!
🧹 Clear Skies, Full Hearts by @sorrybutblog (E, 16k)
Harry loves everything about playing professional Quidditch – the rush of flying, the rush of winning, the rush of getting off with rival seeker Draco Malfoy. Harry’s the highest scoring rookie Seeker in the history of the League. He’s also, inexplicably, obsessively, hooking up with Draco. When Draco unexpectedly quits the League and disappears from Harry’s life, Harry doesn’t stop wondering what it all meant and if he’ll ever get another chance to find out.
🪴 solemates by @shiftylinguini (E, 17k)
It starts because Harry has no self-control when it comes to meaningless and entertaining competition. Actually no, that's not quite right. It starts because Harry is absolutely plastered.
🎨 Thickets by @wolfpants (E, 17k)
When Draco returns to the UK after two decades of building his career as an internationally-renowned artist to look after his ailing, estranged father, he crosses paths with his former flame, Harry Potter, in the most unexpected way.
🚎 Sugarplum by @mallstars (E, 27k)
"Draco," said Potter, a little breathless, a little cheerful. "Hi." He smelled of coconut lotion, Cockroach Clusters and a sloppy ironing charm, his scent crowding Draco's overworked mind from the moment he stepped onto the bus. Lifting one hand off the steering wheel, Potter gave a small wave. He wore gloves. Fingerless, the leather black against the sunlight. Leather. In August.
🧶 we have heard on high by @oflights (E, 34k)
Reeling from the fallout of a bad breakup, Harry decides to find out who his soulmate is. The bad news: it's Draco Malfoy. The good news: Malfoy doesn't seem to know they're soulmates. The worst news: Harry might be falling for him anyway.
🇫🇷 À Bon Chat by @oknowkiss (E, 35k)
Draco Malfoy didn’t intend to lead a life of crime after the war. It’s just that being good had turned out so incomprehensibly boring. Now he's thirty-five, a fully redeemed member of society, the darling of the wizarding social pages, and a newly minted consultant for Gawain Robards' Investigative Research division. In his spare time, he enjoys good whisky, casual sex, and moonlighting as an art thief.
🥘 Nothing Gold Can Stay by @moonflower-rose (E, 40k)
One summer evening, Harry Potter vanished in the middle of dinner with his friends. Four days later he came back. Sort of. Draco Malfoy is on the case.
🐺 Jasmine in Bloom by @lqtraintracks (E, 41k)
This is not something Draco can have in his life… Potter overturning all that he’s carefully cultivated. They’re not compatible and never will be. Draco’s been playing with fire. It just so happens that he likes how Potter smoulders before being allowed close enough to burn.
⏳The Unplottable Time Conundrum by @writcraft (E, 45k)
When the past starts bleeding into the present at Grimmauld Place, an old academic article pulls Draco Malfoy out of his life of luxury. Haunted by the memory of a fleeting post-war kiss and thrust into the ghostly spaces inhabited by Unspeakable Harry Potter, Draco’s easy life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.
🪩 Never Mind the Bollocks by @the-sinking-ship (E, 118k)
If someone told Harry six months ago that by autumn he would be single, living on whisky and toast, and dancing the night away with Draco Malfoy, he would have told them to get their head checked. And yet, here he was.

Danny 'I don't do weird' Pink frustrates me as a character, because I'm honestly not sure whether he was supposed to have an arc or not.
His primary role is as a foil for Clara's arc and, in aid of that, as a mirror to the Doctor. A solider with survivor's guilt and a man of action who can't stand by when people need help etc., in some ways he and the Doctor have a lot in common, but he's also a very grounded and circumspect personality versus the Doctor's being fantastical and adventurous. Danny isn't curious and doesn't want to pursue new things or experiences, instead he wants to be fully present with and grateful for what he already has. The Doctor is incorrigibly curious and always interested in new things.
Danny is someone who desires nothing more than an ordinary life, and looks for beauty and satisfaction in the normal things and people around him. He wants his world to be small and quiet, he values the mundane things others might take for granted. He's normal, patient, dependable, simple, honest, etc. His reaction to trauma hasn't been to disavow the things which lead him to that event, or to seek out stimulation to avoid thinking about it, it's to be thoughtful and cautious and somewhat rigid so he can always apply the mindset and skills he retained from before he was traumatised.
He's very firm and unbending in his worldview and in his self-image. He doesn't seem to ever reassess people once he's decided what he thinks of them. He's not unreasonable or unwilling to compromise, he is in fact maybe too reasonable, but he is implastic. He's extremely even-tempered except for around his identity as a soldier, which he's prickly about, but still pretty quick to let it go as long as he's not being deliberately antagonised.
So anyway Danny represents this other path, and this opposite response to the horror of war and making a catastrophic mistake, but he never learns, he never grows and he and Clara are never much on the same wavelength about anything. He's supposed to be stability, the things she 'should' want, the 'person she's supposed to like', the safe choice, the presentable life which Clara feels like she has to have. He's orderly and ordinary and that's what she wants from him. She has to control her image, her future, and her options.
And their simple relationship, once it exists, functions well as the contrast to her complicated and tumultuous relationship with the Doctor while the companion power dynamic is being dismantled and rebuilt so they can be emotional equals. But like, the set up is confusingly executed.
Listen- they have zero chemistry, they have nothing to talk about and have to resort to talking about work, every conversation goes instantly off the rails, they rub each other the wrong way, there is never any reason for them to keep reconciling and trying again to connect. Like. You are not hitting it off! and keep offending each other bc you're not compatible! Quit!!
Clara is forcing it, that makes complete sense with what she's going through, she's trying to take control of her life and her emotions, trying to prove to herself she's not pining for the Doctor and at the mercy of his whims for her life to be full and complete. She doesn't want to need him or to be dependant on him. She doesn't want to be the heartbroken sadsack whom he abandoned at Christmas or who will take whatever scraps he'll throw her. She wants to control his position in her life and control how she feels about him. Hence her assigning him a specific day and confining their adventures on her own terms. She's trying to keep the Doctor compartmentalised. Having an Appropriate Human Relationship means she's successfully put the Doctor in his box (lol) and neutralised the chaotic power of her feelings for him. I mean, obviously not, but that's what she tells herself.
But what is Danny doing? Why does he keep pursuing this when it's so clearly not a good match?
Again in Listen, and much more so The Caretaker, Danny illustrates that he does not know who Clara is, he's wildly wrong about her and what she's like, and he's very high handed about it as well. He's convinced that the Doctor is taking advantage of her, that the Doctor is domineering in their relationship, that she is not a person who wants to be put into challenging or dangerous positions, that the Doctor is pushing her to takes risks and become a leader where that's not her nature. None of this is true. Clara was always a decisive, assertive, strongly driven person who seeks out new experiences and naturally assumes a leadership role any time that's necessary; she relishes being challenged and facing the unknown. Her blow up with the Doctor wasn't about him 'pushing her too far', it was about him failing to support her when she needed him and condescending to her as a human rather than treating her with the intimacy and equity their bond and history together demands. It's personal and it's about their emotional relationship. It's not about making hard choices, it's about having to make hard choices without her partner being honest with and emotionally available to her.
Clara was always an adventurous person, willing to be spontaneous as long as it's on her terms, and excited by the prospect of authority and responsibility. The danger and challenge isn't an unfortunate side effect or a risk she has to take to see amazing sights, it's part of the appeal. She lied to Danny by omission when she said she went off in the box to 'see wonders', not just because the real reason is that she's in love with Doctor, but also because she doesn't just want to be a tourist. She wants to get involved and save people, she wants things to sometimes go pear shaped. She enjoys and craves that part of it too.
Danny is also wildly wrong about the Doctor, but this is understandable and would be fine except that he's never corrected? He never learns better? What's the point?
In Death in Heaven Danny goes out still wrong about the Doctor, still condemning him cruelly and unfairly while knowing nothing about him. He had a point with some of his original rant, there was actual insight there, but it's buried in assumptions and bitterness and then Danny keeps tripling down on the assumption. The one which doesn't understand that the very thing he's shitting on the Doctor for (being willing to lead and make hard choices that must be made in order to save people) is something the Doctor has in common with Clara. And always has. The Doctor didn't change her or push her into that, that's who she's always been.
What is the point of Danny calling him a blood-soaked general and mocking him, calling him an officer as a pejorative again, and again because the Doctor is trying to save the planet. Like, memory check, that's what Danny is mad about. The Doctor doing everything in his power to save literal billions of lives. Doing it for no reason, out of altruism. Doing it while always trying very hard not to fight or kill anyone. Doing it even at enormous spiritual cost to himself.
I don't understand how we're meant to find Danny sympathetic in that moment, because he comes off like a complete dickhead. And it's all the more frustrating because in the intervening episodes Danny has been eminently reasonable. As I've discussed before, we're exhaustively shown that Danny is 100% okay with what Clara claims is going on, that he doesn't want to get in the way of her friendship with the Doctor, that if it really were only the relationship she's pretending it is, there would be no conflict. He's the one who encourages her to make up with him after Kill the Moon! He tells her to go on travelling and it's fine!
Even when he discovers she's been lying to him and cavorting with the Doctor behind his back (again despite him telling her it was fine with him!), he's calm about it and repeats for the millionth time that all he wants from her is honesty. The truth. Which is the one thing she can't give him because Clara knows their entire relationship is built on the lie, they're only together because of the lie. The truth is, as Moffatt said, that Danny never stood a chance. There is a conflict between the two relationships and she's always going to choose the Doctor.
And that does come out, she gives the whole speech to Danny, not knowing it's him, finally being honest. And he seems unsurprised by it, which makes sense because on some level he definitely always knew ('do you love him?' 'no' 'really had enough of the lies'), but then nothing comes of that. Clara just soldiers on, going right back to pretending this relationship wasn't a façade doomed from the start, and Danny allows her to pretend. He goes off on the Doctor, but not in a way the Doctor actually deserves at all, and just sweeps her confession under the carpet. Letting her get away with it again. True to form, I guess! he always did. But shouldn't we make progress?
And it's like... I hate that he dies on that note. It feels like he dies in denial. I guess you could argue it contributes to his decision to not come back, but that feels like a disservice to the character. Saving the kid is important to Danny, it allows him to atone for his greatest mistake, but he didn't need to change or grow to accomplish that and it doesn't provide any closure to his actual role in the narrative, which was as Clara's foil. Clara is off the hook, free to go on lying to herself about their relationship. It's not addressed in Last Christmas, either, it's only barely hinted at.

What's a game/some games you wish you could talk about more?
THEME: Mint’s Favourite Games. (Part 1/2)
Dear friend, I do not know if you know how much pain this causes me because…there are so many games! Games I’ve run, games I haven’t run, games I’ve purchased, games I want to buy… narrowing it down is so so hard. It’s like asking to choose which child is your favourite. So first things first I’m going to drop a link to the Games that Intrigue Me collection that I’ve been fostering on Itch, because that’s where you’re going to see games that I really really want to talk about and play in the future. (There are currently 148 games in there, and that’s just what’s available on Itch!!!) With that out of the way, let’s talk about some of my highlights.
There are 12 games in total that I managed to narrow it down to, so let's take a look at the first 6!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Changeling: the Lost 1e, by White Wolf / Onyx Path (Played)
The most trad game on this list, Changeling: The Lost was the reason I stepped into roleplaying games. It was advertised as a fantastical allegory for healing from trauma, which is exactly the kind of hard-hitting, emotional depth that got me interested when it came to roleplaying games. One of my favourite ways to sell it is to tell you this:
Imagine your favourite piece of media and pick a particular character from that media. Now imagine that the entire story that this character experienced was a lie: a story they were put in, in order to fulfill the whims and wiles of an inhuman, eldritch Fae. Now imagine them clawing their way back into the real world only to find out that nobody missed them, that their parents and girlfriend never realized that they left because the thing that took them left behind a shell of a copy. What’s more, they still feel the pull of the magical world - they can’t forget it, even if they want to. How do you heal from a magic that you can never leave behind?
Changeling: The Lost has a lot of drawbacks. It’s clunky. It requires an unhealthy amount of d10s. It’s got two editions, and most folks prefer the one edition over the other. It requires a lot of prep. The “beautiful madness” can definitely lead into some negative stereotypes about mental health (which is why I recommend re-working the Clarity mechanic into a mechanic about how trauma affects your emotions). White Wolf cannot write a fucking index. But the combination of personal horror with the glitter around the edges has got me in a choke-hold and I don’t know how to let it go.
Bones Deep, by Technical Grimoire. (Played)
I cannot emphasize how well-formatted Bones Deep is. The bookmarking on the PDF for this game is the best I’ve ever seen, and I’m an avid player of Numenera. This is a Troika game about freshly-hatched skeletons travelling the ocean floor, tussling with a cephalopod invasion, cursed wizards, a crab cabal, and the Skeleton War. Each location in this book can naturally lead to others, and there’s roll tables that allow for you to generate a number of story prompts before you run a session. It’s heavily improv friendly, and allows combat but so much more than that.
You need the Troika handbook to run this game, but honestly, Troika is such a great, gonzo system that I don’t even consider that a drawback, especially because the Skeleton characters from Bones Deep are 100% compatible with the larger game as a whole. I’m not going to say that this is a combat-free game, because it certainly isn’t, but I was surprised at how many problems the players could solve without having to resort to combat
External Containment Bureau, by Mythic Gazetteer. (Played)
This game introduced me to the concept of an open-ended mystery that the players kind of put together as they play. The idea of leaving a few possibilities for a whodunit is not exactly new, and ECB is definitely not the first game to embrace a generative style of play, but it implements it very very well. This is an adaptation of Forged-in-the-Dark that speeds up character creation and makes one-shot play more viable than some of the traditional hacks of Blades. The setting also fucking slaps. Its X-Files meets SCP meets the Office. It has the ability to alter how serious or goofy you want the tone to be. It has mechanics for supernatural powers and drawn-out conspiracies.
It also has a cult-flavoured hack called Congregation, which is just as good and you should also check out.
Subway Runners, by Gem Room Games. (Played)
A hella-fast game with a character generator that lets you pick up and play in minutes, Subway Runners is extremely online friendly, extremely reasonably priced, and extremely funny. You’re subway maintenance crews dealing with magical problems in the underground of a fantastical metropolis. It’s a gig economy. It’s got stations built out of buried giants. It’s got traumas like “nervous”, “romantic” and “brave to a fault”. It’s one-shot Forged-In-The-Dark.
Your online-generated character sheet reads like a Contractor File, complete with side hustles, custom inventories, your Lunch Order and your Demerits. Fix train lines, find missing passengers, and send eldritch monstrosities back into the inter dimensional portals from whence they came. All so you can pay rent. This game is off-the-wall and it’s only three fucking dollars. Please, I’m begging you to check out this game.
Slugblaster, by Mikey Hamm. (Bought, not yet played).
I was so excited for this game that I managed to get on the proofreading team! And gosh I am stoked about that. This is another Forged-in-the-Dark game (I think I’m sensing a theme here), this time about teenagers hoverboarding through the multiverse. This game is so kooky and has such a unique take on FitD, with mechanics that really emulate the idea of cobbling together gear and tech to make your kit personalized. It’s a game wholly about teenage self-expression and self-discovery, in a world that's doing its best to limit your independence.
The layout for this game is also wonderfully fun and evocative. It’s brightly-coloured, with contributions from around the world, and suggestions for playing in towns other than Hillview, Canada (although as a Canadian I am also deeply fond of the built-in setting). I wrote an add-on for this game, called Charlock, and you can get it, as well as a whole bundle of goodies in the Slugblasting for Teen Mental Health Bundle here, until the end of July!!!!
i’m sorry did you say street magic, by Caro Ascersion. (Played)
This is a city-building game that I adore playing as a set-up to a one-shot or a campaign. I’ve used it to create a superhero city, as well as a Ghibli-inspired city, and there are resources for making gothic cities, cyberpunk cities, and so so much more. There’s a supplement that I adore called there are names here more powerful than our own, which is pay-what-you-want but makes play more accessible for folks who have trouble coming up with ideas on the spot.
The art for these games is by Shannon Kao, and it’s whimsically mundane. It perfectly communicates the vibe of play. The city generation helps you create neighbourhoods, as well as landmarks and characters located in those neighbourhoods, but it doesn’t stop there. It also helps you generate story hooks that you could pick up for an upcoming game. Finally, the mutual element of creation gives players ownership and investment in the city they create, so when it comes to character creation, you should find that the players will easily be able to anchor themselves in the world.
If you want to hear an example of this game, I recommend @partyofonepod ’s episode, which was recorded with the creator of the game.

Your Venus sign & your love language
numéro deux
Water signs 🌊
Cancer 🕊
Tumblr media
You are a calm and nurturing lover. Home is your hearth and you’d love nothing more than to create a little nest with your lover/ loved ones. You may be prone to keeping your emotions to yourself at first, wanting to stay safe in your shell but once you open up you’ll be a loyal and sympathetic partner. Love is your safety net and you desire a relationship where you can emotionally connect. This is the kind of relationship of long time love birds who prefer to stay in at night with a glass of wine, a warm blanket and a movie. You may be more maternal in love, a divine feminine who looks to mother their sacred bonds and create a safe space of attachment and security. You may also seek a partner who you can put down roots with and create a beautiful home as Cancer rules the 4th house of home, family and ancestry.
love language ~
Quality time | Being so emotionally vigilant having security is a must for you in a relationship. Spending one on one time with your partner is essential in creating a place of safety for you. You may find that you prefer a life of less interference where down time and being away from all the noise of others is needed to rejuvenate your connection. You enjoy the simple pleasures of emotional connection in life. Coming home to your lover at the end of the day and climbing into a warm bed would be your idea of heaven.
Scorpio 🕊
Tumblr media
You are a deep and intense lover. Shallow waters are not the kind you like to play in when it comes to love. The deeper you can etch your way into the psychological crevices of your partner the better. Love is an instinctive and transformative experience for you. You’ll look to find a relationship you can transform with. This is the kind of relationship of two partners who will go through periods of emotional upheaval in their relationship only to evolve and deepen their bond. Think lovers at a distance who have to fight obstacles to find their way back to each other. In another way, you may merge quickly in love as Scorpio is ruled by the 8th house of finance and shared resources. You may find when you merge financially with your lover you bring significant growth to your relationship that will be profound.
love language ~
Physical touch | Likewise to your fellow fixed sign Taurus, the sentiment of touch is invaluable to you. Scorpio’s natural ruler Mars is the planet of war, power, sex and aggression. Physical compatibility will be essential in your relationships. You want a lover you can be consumed by and who will want to consume you. If it’s not deep and penetrating love you don’t want it. To consummate and to possess are the ways in which you nourish your pleasure sector. Intimacy is something that is a non negotiable. You seek tugging hair and tangled sheets. Physical connection is key for you to survive.
Pisces 🕊
Tumblr media
You’re a dreamy and empathic lover. Getting lost in your kaleidoscopic, rose tinted dreamscape is essential on your path to love. You may have a tendency to walk the tight rope of fantasy preferring an idealised relationship than one that comes with all the harsh day to day realities. But you love to love more than most. These are the kind of lovers that meet, fall in love at first sight and run off into their own universe, leaving all their earthly possessions and daily hindrances behind. Love for you is sacrificial and you give your all to it. These can also be experimental lovers who would spend their day in a sun tinted living room, listening to music and expanding their thoughts and ideas. Pisces is organically ruled by Jupiter so exploring will be important to you and yours.
love language ~
Acts of service | Being a mutable sign adaptability is important for you in love. But more than anything, the art of sacrificing is essential. You lose yourself in your lover and look to find ways to make them happy with small acts of empathy. Where Virgo seeks to lend practical service you are here to serve the unconscious mind of your partner. Listening to their emotional needs, being a shoulder to cry on. Like your sister sign Scorpio, your Neptunian soul craves to merge with your partner both spiritually and emotionally. You’ll love to have deep chats into the night, searching the corners of each other’s creative souls. Or a long drive across the coastline where you put on their favourite playlist and listen intently holding hands.

House of the Dragon
The Falcon Becomes a Dragon by MichelleGz | T | 28k | Daemyra & Aemma: What if Rhaenyra and Daemon “woke up” during the tourney that was hosted for Baelon’s impending birth, both remembering their future life. What if Aemma’s labors were not so far along. What if there was time to save her? Will Aemma believe that her beloved husband was going to kill her for the child in her womb?
you and i are made of fire by aur_el_ias | M | 8.6k | Daemyra: Soulmarks are no trivial thing. Indeed, the words inscribed on the wrist are far from frivolous—they are the most important words heard in one's life, spoken by another. Unfortunately, save for a few exceptions, most highborn marriages are not soul-bound marriages. This is the story of one of those exceptions. OR In 105 AC, Daemon Targaryen finds his soulmate.
Viable Alternatives series by madina | T | 375k | Laenor/Rhaenyra, Daemyra, her children, and Viserys' children: So much could have been solved and so many could have been spared if a universe with dragons, magic, wargs and White Walkers had artificial insemination—and if the characters tried to be anything else but a dysfunctional family.

Can she give up enough to take her crown? Or will she once again lose to her father's mistakes, her enemies' schemes and her own errors? (Juulna: One of my all-time favourites.)
A Woman Scorned by Shadow_Monarch_14 | E | 96k | WIP | Daemyra, Aemma/OC: After Prince Baelon Targaryen was a miscarriage, Queen Aemma Arryn tells King Viserys I Targaryen that she will have no more children. She has given him a daughter (a heiress) and that should be good enough. Viserys, pressured by his Small Council and his dream of a male heir as well as manipulated by Otto, makes the decision to set Aemma aside and marry Alicent. Aemma, betrayed by the love of her life, agrees… after taking her daughter, Dragonstone and the Islands of the Narrow Sea and the dragons from Viserys and his Small Council. If Otto Hightower wants a dragon King with his blood on the Iron Throne, he'll have to another thing coming.
Ancient Fire by AnaWayne | NR | 198k | WIP | Rhea/Daemon, Jonsa: Bran Stark knew that it wasn’t enough. So he decided to use his sister’s dormant yet growing magic to change the history of the House of Dragons before its fall.
put down that gravestone by darkgods | E | 249k | WIP | Daemyra: they have his mother's eyes, these would-be velaryon boys. not those of their own mother, but his. the king stretches limbs and smiles wide, heedless of his brother's fury mingled with agony, his daughter's frozen gaze. fire and blood has reunited. all must be well. the king thinks nothing of the prince's lack of mourning blacks, for the whole kingdom knew the wife daemon targaryen sought was never found in the vale. ten years after the godsforsaken night in the brothel, daemon targaryen makes his return to court to find it infested with vipers that threaten to coil lethal bodies around his niece. his niece and the nephews that bear his features yet claim the name velaryon. the rogue prince has returned, and a reckoning is set to begin.
Marvel
Some Things Shouldn't Be a Chore by scifigrl47 | T | 22k | Stony, Phlint: Steve takes things like personal responsibility and respect seriously. Tony's got people he pays to take care of that kind of thing, and anyway, he's pretty sure that he's going to die of some exotic disease in his workshop, because Dummy's still a little spotty about what is 'clean' enough to put on an open wound. The rest of the Avengers are in this for personal gain, except for Clint, he just enjoys being a dick. And some things shouldn't be a chore.
Basic Rules by StrivingArtist | T | 7.9k | Tony & Avengers: It said something about Toni’s life that she had an established system in case of kidnapping and torture, and while there had been tweaks, it was still basically the same as from when she was a kid.
Let them underestimate you.
Don’t fight back until you have an exit.
Lie from the start.
Protect what matters.
Assume no one is coming to help.
Tony and the Falcon by ArcticVulpix | T | 10k | IronFalcon: Steve introduced Sam Wilson to Tony Stark after the Fall of SHIELD. He grows to regret that. He grows to regret that very much.
Ramblings by TheSovereigntyofReality | G | 34k | Pepperony, Tony & Peggy: The problem with Alzheimer's is that sufferers sometimes ramble…often with no idea who is sitting with them. Peggy says something that sends Tony Stark on a legal manhunt.
Five Things Darcy Loves About Working for SHIELD by teand | M | 49k | ShieldShock, Phlint: The Bronx was up, the Battery was down and thank freaking Thor that SHIELD provided housing or Darcy suspected she wouldn't have been able to afford to live closer than Vermont.
I (created from fantasies) exist solely for you by Mizzy | T | 62k | Stony: Six years ago, without the Avengers Initiative there to save the day, scientist Dr. Eric Selvig sacrificed himself to save the world, the almighty demi-god Thor was lost to a terrible storm, and vigilante Iron Man – spotted with a nuclear weapon trying to take advantage of the situation – was forever labelled an enemy of SHIELD. This is a comic book office AU, where Steve is defrosted a year too late, Thor has forgotten who he is, and no one knows Tony is Iron Man. Also includes: office pranks, inappropriate post-it notes, and superheroes who like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain.
The Mechanic, The Soldier, and The Captain by AvocadoLove | M | 6.4k | Stuckony: HYDRA need a replacement for Zola’s genius, and they have years worth of experience breaking and brainwashing a good man into something they can control.
The Evidence by StrivingArtist | T | 16k | WinterIron: Didn’t notice. Right. Sure. Two brilliant minds, two super spies, and a god didn’t notice when the chattiest man they knew stopped making sound. They just seemed happier than before. Brighter and more cheerful than before. They just seemed like they were more comfortable with him around when he was stone silent. Fuck it. He knew they noticed. And he knew they liked him better this way.
In Which The Winter Soldier Might Just Be Wooing Darcy by Out_Of_Custody | T | 28k | WinterShock: Exactly what it says on the tin. (Prompt-Fic) (Juulna: I adore this fic!)
Blood Stained by QueenVee1 | NR | 313k | WinterShieldShock: With a war on the horizon, the Avengers mend bridges that had been burned, relationships are rebuilt, and new friends forged. After a chance encounter with Steve Rogers, Darcy Lewis figures she's had her fill of Avenger-related activities. Turns out she's more entrenched than she ever thought possible. When she forms an unlikely friendship with James "Bucky" Barnes, she thinks her life can't get any weirder. Spoiler alert: IT CAN! A (double!?!?) meet!cute and secret!sibling story! They said it couldn't be done. B**** YOU THOUGHT!
Shadow & Bone/Six of Crows
Quiet Miracles by goatsandgangsters | G | 10k | Darklina, Zoya & Nikolai & Alina & Aleksander: Alina knew miracles. She was no Saint and no savior, she knew this. But she knew the light in someone’s eyes when they smiled. She knew the warmth of an arm slung around her shoulder, the squeeze of a hand, the elbow in her side, the tight squeeze of an embrace. She knew the moment the room held its breath and then broke into the brilliant cascade of laughter. She knew the glimmer of tears wiped from her cheeks by careful fingers. Alina knew miracles. Ravka had never been so full of them. Or: sometimes a government is the beloved sun saint of the people, a young king determined to fix what has long been broken, the eminently practical head of the newly formed Grisha council, and the heretic who’s no longer going it alone.
Without a Mouth I Can Swear Your Name by tothewillofthepeople | T | 32k | Wesper, Kinej | Helnik: Kaz looked at Matthias coldly. “What do you want?” “I want to know where Wylan Van Eck is,” Matthias said. (A Six of Crows Hogwarts AU)
Star Trek Discovery
Respite series by Alethia | E | 22k | Michael/Pike: The Terran Pike comes to visit the newly-resurrected Captain Burnham on the Shenzhou and things get…heated.
Stargate Atlantis
Desert Rose by mific | E | 18k | McShep | John, a downed Hurricane pilot in WWII, is rescued by Rodney who's tracking strange energy readings in the Sahara. And in another life, their story makes another John and Rodney unwilling Atlantis celebrities.
Ted Lasso
At the Right Time by Annaelle | E | 25k | RoyJamie: Roy doesn't like to think he's taking advantage of Jamie. He's making him better, stronger, faster, a better player, and now that he's got the fucking muppet actually behaving for him, he'll be damned if he lets him go. For the PepPerVerse Bottom!Roy Challenge.
The Hunger Games
The Victors of District Twelve by DustyAttic | G | 49k | Everlark & Lucy Gray Baird & Haymitch: night What if Lucy Gray survived that night in the woods with Snow? What if she made it up north, found those people rumored to be surviving without the Capitol, and realized District Thirteen wasn't quite as obliterated as she'd been taught? And what if, sixty-five years later and after watching a certain Mockingjay end Snow's reign, she came back to District Twelve? This is the story of Katniss and Peeta meeting Lucy Gray Baird, and learning her story-- the story that Snow so desperately tried to erase.
The Locked Tomb
Your Necro Questions Answered by Magichorse | T | 8.8k | Griddlehark: Syndicated columnist "Nav the Cav" offers a sympathetic ear to cavaliers across the galaxy and dispenses practical, no-nonsense, real talk advice on how to properly manage and care for your necromancer.
Cake by the Ocean by zoicite | T | 15k | Griddlehark: Okay, so the thing was, Gideon had always been shit at plans. She knew that. Everyone knew that, but this--she really didn’t think it would be this hard! Gideon’s voice was like the least memorable thing about her. Bargaining her voice for a well-shaped set of human legs--that really should have worked in her favor.
who ya gonna call? by igneousbitch | E | 24k | Griddlehark: (Casual sex and paranormal investigation. Not necessarily in that order.) (Or: the Buzzfeed Unsolved AU in which Gideon is ready to fight a ghost, and Harrow just wants to be haunted.)
Behind the Locked Door by UnseelieWench | T | 98k | Griddlehark: It figures that the only college with the badass Cavalier program is also the college that Harrow Nonagesimus wants to attend. Oh well. Campus is big, right? She'll probably never see that pointed little face again.
The Mummy
Best Laid Plans by kyaticlikestea | T | 6.6k | Ardeth Bay/Jonathan Carnahan: After 20 years of being subjected to more yearning than any sister should ever have to witness, Evy decides that enough's enough.
Wednesday
A Torment of the Mind by cherrybirch | M | 58k | Wenvier: In which Wednesday and Xavier sign up for Hermione’s course in Legilimency. Two overdramatic darkness-loving teens with crushes on each other, trying to master their psychic powers by learning to read each other's minds… what could go wrong? NOTE: Canon non-compliance has been tagged for three things: Hermione’s presence at Nevermore, Larissa acting as principal (as if nothing happened), and the complete removal of the stalker subplot. (I find stalkers terrifying and don’t want to write about one.)

the rule of 3 in season 5
examples include but are not limited to:
dot's family of three
dot being roy's third wife
dot, munch, and gator being three extensions of roy
munch & dot meeting three times
danish's prank on roy involving three men
the ticket number at the courthouse (?) numbering 313
munch claiming roy owes him three times his original payment
including gator, munch was attacked by three men
after being shot in the leg, witt had three working limbs
the rune munch left on the walls of the tillman daughters' bedroom had two kinds of threes: three vertical lines; then a diagonal, a horizontal, and a set of curves on the top and bottom
the ranch war involving three separate parties: the neo-nazis, the military, & dot vs the tillmans
im sure there are tons more, but my overall interpretation is that the threes are meant to subliminally question binaries -- moral binaries, gender binaries, the idea of the past & future being separate, pacifism vs violence, etc. -- because people cannot be defined through binaries. they can, however, limit the infinite paths available to them through binarist thinking. since dot, munch, & gator are the three main characters, i think they're represented through the 313 ticket, with gator being the 1. he was too far gone in his assimilation to have many paths available to him, & so he was locked into the singular path of suffering. munch & dot, meanwhile, have been questioning the binaries they've been locked into since the start of the season. when you overlap a 3 and a mirrored 3, you get a figure eight, aka infinity. dot & munch are that pair of threes, who, as the season progresses, are also revealed to be two halves of a whole. munch states in the finale that life is not a circle, but a line. he is trying so hard to cling to binarist logic because despite how it's poisoned him, it's still familiar, and the unknown territory of love is too scary. he's a lonely human being trying to convince himself that he's a beast. gator is the opposite. hes a beast trying to convince himself that his upbringing is the natural way of humanity. obviously, the wild card is dot, who shows both of them that the paths of life can exist even beyond the threes. even though she & gator aren't compatible anymore, she loves & forgives him. its munch who still has a chance, & so they meld together to form that infinity.

The Mundane and the Magic
༻ a codz x reader story ༺
Tumblr media
➶ Origins // ❝ Becoming One With Madness, A Chaos To Embrace ❞
➶ Chapter One , 1853 words
Tumblr media
Clouds blackened the sky, stripping away the land of all its colour and life when a raging storm brewed overhead. Rainfall battered the land with vengeance, falling so heavily in a blink of an eye, appearing misty to see through when the raging winds swept in. Bolts of lightning blazed the sky, illuminating the grounds like a blinding strobe, as simultaneously, clashes of booming thunder rattled the wilting bunker walls.
The trenches, muddied and puddling with streams of water flowing through deep grooves of tank tracks, soaked the battlefield something dire. Each step taken would leave boots squelching and dripping in murky rainwater up to the ankles, trekking it over paths constructed of wooden planks, only for them to be engulfed in the sea of mud when vehicles rolled through.
A trio of enormous steel mechanisms, bodied as humanistic robots that stood as tall as skyscrapers, patrolled the treacherous lands in sync. The stalked in jagged ways. Their grappled hands swing by their sides, so cryptic as the embodied natural human motions. When its corrugated mechanical foot stomped its route, flattening anything that dared stand in its way, to trek over the crumbling bunkers, they had the power to provoke a sudden earthquake that could bounce items that lay on tabletops. When gazed upon from the ground view, the fearsome giants were truly a fright to behold.
Yet, one could question how a man could be so tame in the conditions he was surrounded by. Normally, a man would shudder in fear when he looked up to see a robot standing so tall that it’s helmet clad head was lost in the clouds. Nor could anyone averagely watch in wonder when soldiers fell right before their eyes, only to mutate into a ravaging creature with a dire need to devour flesh and bones.
No. Not him... Not Edward Richtofen.
A man best known for his divine intellect. He calls himself a man of medicine. A German scientist like no other. That was rightly true.
Working in the medical field had always been his lifelong destiny; his soul purpose only righteous of a path consisting of surgeons tools and test tubes. Since just a young boy, his interest lied in the study of the human body. Unlike the average teenage boy, Edward enrolled himself further in education constantly, later on expanding his interests in the scientific field, where he would learn and want to test the limitations of the human body.
Edward rightfully believed that his study of science and medicine would only prove to best histories discoveries. To which it had. But when he was approached by, what he unknowingly thought was a reputable source, and praised greatly for his intelligence by men of power, little did he know that he would fall under the command of men ranked high up in the German army.
Apparently his vast knowledge in the medical field, and unsolicited will to carry out experiments that would certainly be harrowing to the faint of heart, proved him to be the perfect candidate to conduct study when the Germans made the discovery of element 115 during the world war.
Despite working alongside and shadowing many elder scientists during his time spent in science labs, Edward grew fond of working with a man in particular, named Dr. Maxis. When he proved himself worthy, their compatibility was certified amicable from the very beginning. With their combined intellect, experiments ranged from making useful discoveries that would better aid the German army’s advantage at winning the war, to very abruptly, their somewhat reputable line of work took a twisted path southwards when they unleashed an atrocity; that was an army of ravaging undead soldiers. That was solely an experiment gone wrong.
At present time, Edward and Dr. Maxis are stationed in Northern France where they would continue to work and better their studies.
In a bunker, ruptured by the swarms of undead creatures tearing gaping holes from what were but only cracks and crevices, Edward stands before a tattered workbench.
His stare wavers from hand-to-hand, blankly looking through the bloodstains embedded into the creases on his palms. He gulps, tilting his head down to see the carcass of an elder man, his limbs roped to the table, an unruly rigid saw splattered with blood placed beside the man’s head that remained cleanly uncapped, his brain void in the rightful space it should be in the centre of his skull; instead preserved in a cylinder glass container nearby.
Dr. Maxis...
Had he committed a murder in cold blood? Had he just saved the decomposing state of the universe? Despite his blank expression, Edward’s mind rattled with questions. None of which he could answer himself. But whatever may be the correct question to ask, he believed that the preserving his co-worker’s brain was a righteous answer nonetheless.
Edward pressed his hands to the table and hunched, a juddered sigh slipping into the winter air creating a small cloud of mist. His eyes clamped shut when flashes of painful memory reminded him just how the man, now lying dead with his mouth agape and unhinged in front of him, thrashed and resisted Edward’s fight to revoke and rob him of the rest of his life.
“It’s all for the betterment of the universe.” Edward mentally assured himself, “The Kronorium said so.”
Ah, the Kronorium, Better known as a sick and twisted novel entailing details of threatened chaos and despair that will most certainly bestow upon the entire universe, written by god knows who.
For a book that seemed to magically appear on his workbench prior to the day he killed Dr. Maxis, Edward was eager to flip the leather cover and read it without questioning just where it came from. He was hooked the second he read the details of the first few pages, for it resonated with him in a strangely familiar sense when it told a back-story of a boy just like himself. That’s when he discovered that it wasn’t just a regular old fairytale novel. No...
It was a book that foretold the prophecies of the entire universe. A story that he alone must set in motion, no matter how catastrophic the consequences. Supposedly, alternate time-lines and dimensions that he would only theorise existed just like the one he was apart of presently. It taught him names of unfamiliar people. Others he had never met before in his life. Yet somehow they were associates in this story.
Edward couldn’t be convinced that the book was realistic in what it preached. However, after stewing on what he had read, the story wasn’t sitting right with him if he just ignored it. It was oddly precise with commands and instructions, written in a way that would sound like a regular story book to anyone that would listen.
Edward felt compelled to endure every aspect scripted in that book, even if he didn’t rightfully agree. Almost like it was his calling to pursue such an honourable duty, to ensure the universe would remain in tact. After all, he had already committed to something so heinous.
Why stop now?
That’s how he ended up in the current situation with his co-scientist dead and decomposing before his eyes. Edward believed he was going mad, but he kept repeating a specific phrase.
“This is what you have to do.”
A familiar sound of routinely thundering footsteps emitted faintly from the distance. One from the trio of monstrous robots was making its typical patrol across the outskirts and soon through the battlefield. Each time it marched across the land, the route programmed for it to take would make sure it step directly on top of the bunker Richtofen stationed himself in. With each hourly patrol, the bunker was weakening and being burrowed under the crushing weight of the giant machine. The ceiling had already somewhat caved in and crumbled in the centre. It was certain that the rest was to collapse at any moment.
Yet Edward made no hasty attempt to get to a safer location before such an event occurs. Although, no where was safe. An undead army had overrun the land within minutes of exposure to element 115. He was outnumbered, for sure.
Part of him urged him to go down with the book in hand, to never let the chaos unroll by destroying it and himself simultaneously. On the contrary, his curiosity was his worst enemy. He wanted to know just how the story would pan out, but he questioned everything.
Will it all go to plan? Will it fuck up somewhere along the way?
With his eyes still closed, Edward breathed deeply, his shoulders rising and falling once he exhaled. Edward knew that book was just one workbench over from him, and all he could think about was reading the next chapter of cleverly told instructions.
A cluster of sounds hit his ears at once. Rustling of heavy gear shifting on a persons being as they moved in swift motions, to be precise. Footsteps stalked closer in an uneven pattern. The weighted sound of multiple pairs of boots crushing fallen blocks of concrete on the ground indicated that it was not a singular person in the room with him, and judging by the lack of hissing and groaning, it was certainly not a stray zombie clambering in to tear him apart.
His head remained bowed until the sound of movement ceased, and the click of a gun being cocked turned his attention up to meet a narrow barrel of a vintage pistol pointed directly between his eyes, held in the gloved hands of a brawny, dark haired foreign man on the opposite side of the table.
On either side of the man in the middle, stood another man. To the left, one clad in winter attire and a bullet proof vest, a hefty shotgun clutched in his hands. To the right, one welding a samurai sword, majestically in a defensive stance, his jet black hair slicked back in a neat bun.
The trio of narrow stares looked him up and down, each feeling uneasy with the horrifying sight they behold on the table, but each making an immediate conclusion that they had stumbled across the man they had each been sent for.
“You’re Doctor Richtofen, right?” The man in the middle spoke, his accent distinctively American. “I’m taking you out of here.”
Edward never shuddered. Never flinched. Nor felt a measly pang of fear when three foreign soldiers invaded his quarters with weapons cocked and raised, ready to fire at him if he so much as twitched.
A gun clicked behind the tall man in the middle. Edward noticed the two men standing either side had instantly averted their attention to an unfamiliar source, apparently right behind the American that he was confronted with.
“We’ll see about that, won’t we?”

Pairing: Dieter Bravo x OFC Warnings: 18+ implied alcohol abuse, implied drug abuse, reference to a previous volatile argument, mention of almost being hit accidentally by a thrown object, angst, so much angst. Summary: Sometimes love is knowing when to walk away no matter how much it hurts. AO3: Linked

Tumblr media
Chiffon Prologue.
It's one of those things they don't tell you about, in the fairy tales or the love songs. There are no warnings, no guidebooks, about the fact that one day, you might find yourself falling so fast and so deep, that you won't even realize what's happening until you've hit the ground.
By the time you understand the gravity of what's occurred, you're already bruised, battered, and bleeding, with no way of retreating to the safety of the solitude you once knew.
Love hits without warning. It floods your heart. It leaves you breathless.
It's not a gentle tap on the shoulder, it's a sledgehammer to the chest, leaving you dazed and unable to stand.
It's an odd occurrence, really. That one day, you'll cross paths with a person who, on paper, is nothing like you. Their lives, perspectives, desires, and dreams seem to lie at the opposite end of the spectrum from yours. You aren't looking for them, this strange, unexpected someone who defies everything you thought you understood about compatibility. But life, in all its whimsical and unpredictable ways, doesn't care for your checklists and expectations.
But in practice, it works. How did two people so seemingly different find themselves deeply entwined in a love that defies expectations?
Before you know it, you're in too deep. You are showered with affection, a level of adoration and care you've never known before. You become each other's worlds, existing in a shared bubble of love and intimacy. The connection feels profound, overwhelming. Bound together by an invisible string, you navigate the complexities of life as one.
But love, when it's this intense, this consuming, comes with blind spots. The sacrifices start quietly. They sneak into your lives, disguised as simple compromises. In late nights spent laughing together despite the looming dawn, in rearranged schedules just to steal a few more hours together. You start dismissing opportunities that could pull you away from them, bypassing projects that you would have leapt at before. Those 'compromises', once insignificant, are now dictating your choices, your ambitions, your dreams.
And it all feels worth it. In the moment, love seems worth any sacrifice.
However, cracks inevitably begin to appear. The blurred lines of compromise begin to look more like concessions. You realize, with a sinking heart, that you've compromised not just your time and your plans, but parts of yourself. As the veil of infatuation lifts, you're confronted with the uncomfortable truth – you both want different things.
That's when the devastating realization hits you – the cruelty of having met the right person at the wrong time. If only you had encountered each other earlier, or maybe a few years later, the picture would have been different.
Love can mend your heart, but it can also shatter it into a million pieces. No one prepares you for the fact that love can also hurt.
No matter how it ends - whether in happily ever after or heart-wrenching loss - the fall marks you. It imprints itself onto your soul, becoming a part of your identity that you carry with you wherever you go. The beauty and pain of it, the euphoria and the despair, they blend into a memory that's at once a scar and a badge of honour

Bryony crumpled onto the floor, warm tears cascading down her cheeks in silent testament to the war she had been fighting. It wasn't one against him, but for him. She had pleaded, begged, and outlined her boundaries countless times. Yet, each time she drew a line in the sand, Dieter would dance along the edge, drawing her to it with him, with the promise of change, only to slip further away pulling her with the tide closer again to the cliff's edge.
Now, he was jumping over that line, hurtling towards the precipice of that same cliff with reckless abandon.
Bryony had done everything in her power to pull him back, but she was worn out, her resolve spent. She had finally let go, Dieter seemingly oblivious to the hands that had been desperately trying to keep him from falling.
She stared blankly at her phone, another flashing notification a stark reminder of the chaos she had left behind. Missed calls had escalated into triple digits, each one a desperate plea she couldn't bear to listen to. The texts were worse; she knew they would pull at what little strength she had left, tempting her to crumble if she so much as looked at them.
She couldn't go over the edge with him.
As if seeking some semblance of stability, her fingers clutched at the plush carpet beneath her. The thick strands slipped through her fingers, offering no purchase, no grounding. She needed comfort, she needed reassurance, but all she could feel was the cold emptiness of her isolation.
Because everything was not okay.
And she wasn't sure if it would ever be okay again.
His furious shouts echoed in her ears, his angered screams. They'd been borne of fury, an explosive reaction to her finding and destroying his stash, meticulously erasing every trace of his dealer's number from his phone. He'd been enraged, feeling betrayed and cornered.
The smell of whiskey hung heavy in the air, making her stomach churn. He'd thrown a full bottle in his anger, not looking to where he had thrown it and narrowly missing her and hitting the wall instead. Glass had exploded and the amber liquid inside had splattered everywhere, including soaking her shirt. But still she couldn't muster the strength to pull the shirt over her head.
The moment he had realized the depth of his actions, his eyes wide and panicked as they met hers, they had connected in a moment of horrifying understanding. It was an image she would never forget, a haunting snapshot of a man teetering on the edge of a precipice.
He'd crossed the room then, his movements halting and unsure. He'd tried to reach out, perhaps to comfort or apologize, but had stopped short when he'd seen her fear. The silence that followed was oppressive, filled with regret and heartbreak.
But even then, Bryony knew that letting go was the right decision.
Because sometimes, love means knowing when to step back, even if it shatters your heart.

Ideas that would fix Utrh for me personally:
1. Bruce is made to explicitly panic and have his throw of the batarang be a mistake. It is shown how his trauma of his own parent's deaths and of Jason's death are warring within him.
2. Bruce lets Jason kill the Joker because it is true that he could never so it himself. DC can later find some excuse to ressurect the Joker, but Bruce understands that Jason isn't talking about killing all villains, but just this one. And for what he did to Jason.
3. The sentence "this doesn't change anything." refers to Bruce's own guilt and shame. It means that it doesn't allow Bruce to excuse any of what he did just because Jason is alive again.
4. Take out all victim-blaming parts that have Alfred talking about how Jason was always dangerous and bound to go down a dark path.
5. Show Bruce in extreme self-denial and conflict that Jason is truly alive again, because he has hallucinated or been manipulated with this scenario too often to trust in a good thing. Show Bruce coming to the realization that this time it is true. This time he does get his son back. Have Bruce surrender to Jason in the confrontation where Jason pulls his helmet off the first time.
6. Have Jason say "I was going to kill you." Have Bruce answer "I'd let you."
7. All of this is to say, I think any more cohesive and compatible with other canon and characterization utrh would need to have a stronger acknowledgement of how fucked up Jason's death and ressurection were. And of how it fucked Bruce and Jason up in their respective ways
(8. Bonus. Include Dick, Tim and Barbara in the story as relevant characters to Jason's life and death.)

Chuck was injured instead of Herc by achilleees {M}
riding the wave
They say you never really know a guy till you break his face with your fist. Okay, they don’t really say that, but fuck it all, they should.
build a house on a mountain
In the years following the end of the kaiju war, there is political turmoil and international strife. The world is rebuilt from the ground up, social and economic upheaval disrupting every corner of the globe.
This isn’t that story.
This is the story of Chuck Hansen learning to drive a stick-shift, shotgun a joint, cook Thai food, fix a tractor, and cohabitate with the person he’s too stubborn to admit he’s pretty much in love with. Fortunately, Raleigh is a patient teacher.
Heartbeat by westofnowhere {T}
Chuck shouldn't be alive, but he is. Alive thanks to a dead man. Now Chuck has a lot of shit to sort out. Especially himself. And a certain pretty boy has-been.
This is the way, this is the way we move by JustSomeMusings
Dogs days are over {T}
For this prompt on the pacificrimkinkmeme: I simply adore Max! I get a feel that Max knows how his human feels toward Raleigh but his human is a tad shy so why not Max helps him out? So basically a 5+2 in which Max is the best dog ever.
It's your finger and how I'm wrapped around it {G}
A 2+1 sequel to Dog Days Are Over about Raleigh trying to propose to Chuck. It doesn't go that well.
I'd Call That Drift Compatibility by beachpartybb {E}
"When Raleigh gets to the base, Herc is already wounded and can't be the Jaeger pilot anymore. And somehow Raleigh happens to be drift-compatible not with Mako, but with Chuck, so now they are new co-pilots. Chuck is not happy, but only until their first drift..."
Wait for the Sequel by beachpartybb {E}
"Raleigh is a tough book critic who just gave Chuck's latest book five stars. While browsing at a bookshop, Raleigh gets into a verbal altercation with Chuck, not knowing that he's the same person who wrote his new favourite book."
Crocodile Dundee Got Nothing On Hercules Hansen by kaara {T}
Raleigh learnt that Australia (and Australians) is basically a deathtrap.
Dog Parenting by snack_size
Whelping {T}
Chuck lives, and Max gets a girlfriend when a lady bulldog arrives at the Shatterdome. Herc gets some granddogs, and Chuck doesn't realize he's been dating Raleigh for awhile.
Training {M}
The further adventures of Max's four puppies and the humans that they hang out with.
Our lives are not a linear path by Puppet_in_the_Corner {T}
At 25 years old, Yancy Becket dies reaching out, leaving behind a younger brother with his soul torn in half, and an unborn child who will never know his father. At 22 years old, Raleigh Becket finds himself newly discharged with a busted arm, a neat little description of PTSD and various other disorders he's probably been diagnosed with on his file, and a two month old baby. He's also well and truly at the end of his rope, his life dented by the impressions of those no longer there. Or How Raleigh Becket desperately tries to keep his head above water in a roiling sea of sorrow and depression threatening to drown him, and the only thing keeping him afloat is the little boy with Yancy's face who calls him "daddy".
Comfort by resonae {T}
The five times Chuck wore Raleigh's clothes, and the one time Raleigh caught him.
Sunburst by snack_size {E}
Yancy lives through the Knifehead attack, and the Becket Brothers recover to fight on in Gipsy Danger - though not without consequences. When the Jaeger program is decommissioned, they're packed off to Hong Kong with everyone else. Mako restores a different Jaeger, and Operation Pitfall is much more of a success. Cancelling the apocalypse doesn't mean that things are over, though.
Start As You Mean To Go On by Brenda {E}
This was completely absurd, but somehow, this was his life now. Giving dancing lessons to the savior of the fucking world at a party being thrown in their honor, with what felt like half of Hong Kong in attendance.
The Matchmaker by krwaken {M}
Herc isn't an idiot. He can see the way Raleigh and Chuck yearn for a fight just so they have an excuse to talk to each other. He becomes a sort of matchmaker to bring the two idiots together.
Sic Him, Boy! by nhixxie {E}
Raleigh’s pretty sure Chuck is trying to sic his bulldog onto him, and really--Raleigh thinks as the dog curls at his feet and cuddles against his boots--Chuck should have realized the plan is flawed at the very foundation.
I Don't Mind Your Odd Behaviour by Vacilando {G}
So basically; Max the bulldog was pulling a tiny red wagon filled with flower crowns upon flower crowns around the Shatterdome with a note tied to his collar that simply said “Take One”. And Raleigh was -for the lack of better term- stalking the bulldog. or The One Where Raleigh Becket Spent His Thursday Creeping On A Bulldog With A Wagon (and there are feelings and flowers and people will puke rainbows)
Interpretation is Key by Aupaiste {G}
"...a Chuck lives AU where Chuck wants a relationship with Raleigh, who is pretty much oblivious. Herc notices, and because he knows Chuck is clueless at wooing anyone, decides to give him some advice. Except Chuck, being Chuck, manages to mess it all up."
You are safe by resonae {G}
There is nothing else Herc loves more than his son. Herc knows this for a fact. Raleigh/Chuck is more of a background relationship, kind of more focuses on Herc and Chuck's father-son dynamic
Pretend Boyfriends by fadedink {T}
Everyone thinks that Raleigh and Chuck are together. They're not. But that doesn't stop them from having fun with the idea.
Give me a chance to catch my breath [so I can lay my ghosts to rest] by Puppet_in_the_Corner {T}
Chuck doesn't know where he stands with Raleigh Becket. They're certainly on better terms than before, but they're not friends. But they can talk now without getting into a fist fight, so that's an improvement, he thinks. And if his heart jumps (it does not flutter, he’s not 15 years old again) every time Raleigh smiles at him, or how once in a while during lunch or dinner Raleigh’s hand will find his own and Chuck responds with a firm grip, well, he doesn’t have much to say there. Well, he would, if these fucking ghosts would leave him the hell alone. Or That time Chuck Hansen was haunted by Raleigh Becket's annoying siblings.
Metatheria by Macx
 Shifting Perspective {E}
Operation Pitfall was a success. The Breach had been closed. There had been losses, but there had also been survivors. Like Chuck Hansen, who had been found in an escape pod, seriously and rather badly injured, but alive. His recovery opens Raleigh's eyes to something he hadn't known about the other pilot, that only a select few actually do. He finds himself stunned and slightly awed, and very much drawn to the other man... even in the shape he is in. And maybe, just maybe, he can get away with calling Chuck Hansen an adorable fuzz face in the future, too....
Gridlocked {M}
It was an accident. Really. A complete and utter accident. That the accident resulted in Chuck being forced to Shift, well, who knew? Certainly not Dr. Newton Geiszler, who had no idea that distilled Kaiju Blue would do that to a Shifter when liberally doused in it. No one can explain how it happened. Just like no one can explain why Chuck is stuck and can't Shift back. Or if they can get him unstuck... Well, crap.
I Would Walk 500 Miles by themonsterswin {T}
Chuck's an Engineering student who lives in Sydney, Australia; Raleigh works construction in Anchorage with his brother Yancy. The two met a long time ago, in an online gaming community, where raleigh_danger and strikerhansen hit it off. They've been friends ever since, though they only started skyping a few years ago. This collection of drabbles follows them from friends to something a little more!
Sweater Thieves are the Best Thieves by alphaenterprise {G}
Raleigh knits Chuck a god-awful sweater.
crashing the net by achilleees {M}
Recently locked down to a five-year contract, Chuck Hansen is just getting comfortable as the superstar captain of an elite hockey team. Only, that's when the team's general manager trades for the incredibly talented but inconsistent goalie Raleigh Becket, who appears to have no ambition whatsoever. And Chuck’s pretty driven, to put it nicely. Clearly they have some stuff to teach each other - and quick, because the Stanley Cup playoffs are just about to start.
This Is How It's Going To Be by theloverneverleaves {T}
The thing about meeting your idols is that they don't always quite measure up to what you expected. And then sometimes, they're everything you imagined and more. Chuck Hansen will never admit Raleigh Becket was his hero, but the poster rolled up in his drawer says otherwise.
Big Damn Heroes by snack_size {M}
Stacker Pentecost, Captain of the Firefly Class vessel Striker Eureka, has a good crew that's willing to take on just about any job, so long as you can pay. Things have been going pretty well lately, so it would figure that life is about to get more complicated when they pick up two travelers and soon find themselves stuck as go-betweens for Weis and the Kaidanovskys, struggling to keep the Alliance off their back, and hoping not to get on the radar of Hannibal Chau and his crime syndicate.
The Most Dangerous of Animals, Beast Born of the Heart by Wolfarella {E}
Raleigh Becket is a gladiator who's fought for the house of Hercules Hansen for some time, and after he becomes Champion, his lanista’s son, Chuck, suddenly takes an avid interest in him that very quickly turns into something more.
You should stay another night with me by Puppet_in_the_Corner {M}
Chuck had thought he’d gotten over this crush years ago, but he hadn't thought that picking up a guy in a bar that his foggy, drunken brain identified as kind of looks like Raleigh Becket on his 21st birthday would backfire so spectacularly on him. Not until after Operation Pitfall, when a woman looking for Raleigh Becket shows up with a 2 month old baby. Oops.
Ghost in the Machine by fadedink {T}
Chuck Hansen's first Drift is a disaster. But what Tendo discovers several days later shocks the entire Shatterdome. Soon enough, they discover that you don't necessarily need a body to co-pilot a Jaeger.
In Which Chuck Hansen Really, Really Hates Photographers by intrikeyt {T}
“Well?” Raleigh asks with a smirk. “What do you say, you little brat? Wanna get hitched?” “You’re not gonna get down on one knee, old man?” Chuck snipes back, because this is how they always will be. The kind of madly in love that means endless bickering, trading barbs and witty rejoinders, tenderness and affection reserved for the quiet, private moments, shared only with each other (and Mako and Herc, because their jobs are twisted like that).
Pining is for Poets by Ishyko {M}
He’d never realized Chuck had dimples. Chuck had dimples and they made him breathtaking. Raleigh wanted to cry at the unfairness of it all.
Chuck's Body by intrikeyt {T}
Five different Rangers of the PPDC who saved Chuck Hansen from becoming a virgin sacrifice, and the one Ranger who decided to do something about it.
Bring the Rain by Macx {M}
Chuck Hansen; arrogant, smart-ass, an egotistical jerk with a ton of issues. Chuck Hansen; son of Herc Hansen. A Shifter like his father. Strong like his father. Just not an alpha. And not a wolf. Well, not completely. Not on the outside. Chuck Hansen; koala Shifter. With a wolf inside, and a temper and the claws to prove it. A Crossbreed. Raleigh didn't really know what hit him the first time they came together, before Operation Pitfall, but he knew he didn't want to let go of it.
I Need You So Much Closer by captainboomeraangs {T}
Five times people thought Raleigh and Yancy were fucking, plus one time Yancy and Raleigh can't believe people really think that.
Nothing But The Rain by theloverneverleaves {T}
Chuck Hansen has always hated the Kaiju, along with everything they stand for. It's just a fact of life. And with the end of the world approaching, he can't help but hate them just a little bit more. But when Raleigh Becket returns to the PPDC, he ends up bringing along more than just his piloting skills. The end of the world is coming, but when the world discovers the Kaiju can look human too, they realise there's more to the alien invaders than meets the eye.
The Kaiju Underground by GutterBall
A Life Less Ordinary {M}
Long story short, Raleigh takes Chuck hostage with a candybar, and then a gritty (slashy) reboot of the movie kind of happens. This is what might have happened if the boys had met without knowing who the other was first.
All the Bastards Here Are Cold {T}
After the events of A Life Less Ordinary, Raleigh eventually has to stop and take a moment to determine how he's dealing with everything that happened. The short answer is: not. At all. He's only done what he's done since the Gipsy Danger disaster, which is barely maintain. So what does he do now that he has a future and someone who clearly wants to share it with him? That's right. Freak right the hell out.
For the First Time by suyari {T}
Chuck Hansen is a 1st grade teacher at a private academy. He knows teachers aren't supposed to have favorites, but he absolutely adores his bright young student Jamie Becket. The kid's father however...is another matter entirely. or The one in which Raleigh is a single parent, Yancy is a doting uncle, and Chuck falls head over heels for an awesome kid before even giving his dad a second glance.
I'll Give you Fucking Romance by happyinthesilence {M}
Raleigh has been out of town and Chuck just wants to welcome him home. Contrary to what everyone thinks he is capable of romance. He is Dammit!
Where My Demons Hide by Wyndewalker {E}
When Yancy Becket died still connected to Raleigh in the Drift, Raleigh lost everything, including part of his soul. Unable to deal with the reminders and accusations that he'd killed his Alpha Guardian brother Raleigh fled the Anchorage Shatterdome. Five years later Raleigh Becket is living a half-life waiting for the wrong move to send him plummeting to his death on the Wall. Then Marshal Pentecost, his former commanding officer, tracks him down for one final mission against the alien Kaiju. Raleigh decides the conn-pod of a Jaeger is as good a place to die as any. He never expected to care again. He certainly didn't expect to find his Alpha.
Love Angle by Amethystina {T}
Chuck honestly had no idea how easy it is to fall in love with one of your neighbours until it's already happening. Raleigh from flat 314 is far too kind, far too genuine, and far too attractive for his own good, and Chuck can't help being drawn to him. He can't help falling in love. Which doesn't seem like that big of a deal, until Raleigh's girlfriend makes an appearance. Then it becomes a whole different story and Chuck pretends that it doesn't break his heart, one tiny sliver at a time, to watch Raleigh and Mako be happy together. But really, he's not fooling anyone. Chuck's life officially sucks.
Conversing Without Words by BorrowedBlueBox {T}
In which Chuck is emotionally stunted and doesn't know how to tell Raleigh how he feels, because he doesn't hate Raleigh at all. Also, Chuck's totally not a school girl with a crush, except he totally is.
Carnival of Rust by Raine_Wynd {E}
Five years ago, Chuck was on the verge of admitting he'd fallen in love, but the man he wanted fell in love with someone else. Now Raleigh's back and determined not to get his heart broken again. Can Chuck convince Raleigh otherwise? Or will the PPDC's new peacetime mission get in the way?
Lips Like Candy by galaxy_parchment {T}
Raleigh has a sweet tooth and Chuck has noticed.
chose not to fall but try again by caelestys {T}
Something smells delicious, and he can’t quite find it in himself to complain about the clanking water pipes and the cold hallways, because someone is inside, cooking real food. No mass produced, gloopy mashed potatoes or powdered eggs—real food, like what they had before the Kaiju Wars. His feet walk him, almost without thought or permission, into the kitchen. Raleigh finds Chuck cooking at 2am.
The Lost Proposal by BorrowedBlueBox {M}
Raleigh loses an important document, Yancy sends him to a strange computer repair shop, the ginered hair tech support keeps flirting with Raleigh and the two go on a date. If it isn't obvious by now, I'm not good with summaries. I promise the story is better.
Dance Lessons by GutterBall
The Mating Dance of the Majestic Hippo {T}
The Proposal AU nobody asked for! For those who haven't seen The Proposal, Raleigh is a mild-mannered, long-suffering assistant to the editor in chief, the uptight control freak Chuck Hansen. When Chuck is set for deportation, he blackmails Raleigh into a fake engagement with the end game of marrying him for the three years required for him to become a citizen. Unfortunately, the U.S. Immigration offices are not impressed, forcing the two into visiting Raleigh's family in Alaska to bolster their claims of genuine love. The only problem: they kinda despise each other. Which is when all the fun starts.
The Dance Continues {E}
A month after the events of The Mating Dance of the Majestic Hippo, Chuck and Raleigh are still exploring this new relationship. They may be married, but getting together isn't the same as staying together, and they both still have their issues to deal with. But this is Raleigh's last day as Chuck's assistant, and Chuck's taking it hard. He's trying to hide it because he knows it's selfish, but he can't help how he feels. Luckily, Raleigh can.
This Ain't Ballroom Dancing {T}
This installment takes place after the events in The Dance Continues, after Raleigh tops Chuck for the first time. Chuck has to think really hard about the implications. Raleigh… well, he's maybe not as supportive as he could be. He laughs a lot. A LOT.
Dog Sitter by Amethystina {G}
Chuck isn't a very trusting person — especially when it comes to who gets to watch Max. Problem is, Chuck has run out of options for potential dog sitters and Mako assures him that her friend Raleigh is very reliable, so he might just have to trust this guy. Grudgingly. When Chuck eventually meets Raleigh, well, he is admittedly quite distracted by how handsome he is. It's probably bad manners to want to fuck your dog sitter, right?
Two-Step Foxtrot by GutterBall {T}
Raleigh trips in the mess hall, and Chuck catches him. By sort of dipping him. Everything else springs from that one little accident. It's a complete foxtrot, and I ain't talkin' about the dance step.
And a Dope with a Charlie Brown Tree by GutterBall {T}
During the first December after Pitfall, Raleigh suddenly gets a wild hair up his ass about making Christmas a huge deal. The weirdo starts giving Chuck all sorts of odd presents and setting up situations designed to make Chuck smile. Chuck... is nonplussed. And grumpy. Shenanigans are afoot.
Christmas is Not Sweater Weather for an Australian by galaxy_parchment {T}
Chuck is introduced to the wonders of ugly Christmas jumpers and needless to say he's not at all thrilled at the idea.
Operation Save Christmas by estei {E}
Chuck is on a mission to save Christmas. Yeah, it’s weird for him, too. He quickly finds himself out of his depth, so he enlists the help of his father and Mako. Predictably, chaos ensues.
The Great Cookie Caper by estei {T}
Herc is not amused. Until he is. Damn those clownshoes.
 Turn Around, Bright Eyes by GutterBall {T}
Chuck gets stuck watching over Raleigh as he's coming out of anesthesia. Raleigh says a few things, Chuck doesn't know what to make of them, and the ridiculous pair of clownshoes have no idea what to do about it. This was intended to be cracky fluff in the same vein as those cell phone videos of the wacky things anesthetized patients say, but these guys make everything so much more complicated. It can never just be easy. Nooooo.
The Little Shatterdome Around the Corner by GutterBall {E}
The "You've Got Mail" AU no one asked for! While Raleigh's working on the Wall, he starts trading emails with a guy he met on a now-defunct academy message board. They tacitly agree to not give away any details of their lives, mostly because… they're both jaeger pilots (one disgraced and one too full of himself for his own good), and they would both be almost universally recognized if they did, which would ruin the whole "secret confidante" thing they have working for them. Then, Stacker Pentecost starts putting his final plan into motion, and suddenly, the two pen pals are both in Hong Kong. The events of the movie play out as scripted, with one exception: Chuck lives. And he finds out who his pen pal really is. Now what the hell is he supposed to do?
Old Dog, New Tricks by GutterBall
Baby Steps {G}
When Raleigh nearly dies during Pitfall, Chuck surprises everyone (but Herc) by surviving and, for some reason, biting Raleigh. It turns out, Chuck is also a dog and has been since birth, and now Raleigh is a dog, too. A puppy, actually, because he's new. But hey, he's alive, right? Even if he needs lessons on the whole "how to dog" thing.
Salty Dog {T}
Someone thought it would be a good idea to puppy-snatch Raleigh and demand money from the PPDC to keep word of a shapeshifting jaeger pilot out of the news. Chuck thinks that might not be the best idea and takes matters into his own hands. Claws. Teeth.
In the Doghouse {M}
After the puppynapping incident, Chuck asks Raleigh to always take Max with him when he wants to go off alone. As a bodyguard, of a sort. Though initially reluctant, Raleigh discovers that Max is the best enforcer ever and starts spending more and more time with the dog. Chuck... is not pleased.
Don’t Stop Retrievin’ {M}
Chuck's having a hard time knowing what he's about these days. Yeah, he and Raleigh are together, but... what does "together" really mean? He's always telling Raleigh "anything you want", but what does Chuck want? Why does he sometimes just want to look at the pretty bloke? And what, exactly, is Herc up to?
Puppy Kisses {E}
Chuck rarely stays a dog after Raleigh shifts back, so when he does, Raleigh does his best to enjoy the novelty. For some reason, it makes Chuck a little more frisky than usual, and... yeah. These two clownshoes are finally ready for the next step. Until Chuck drops something of a bombshell that reminds Raleigh that, while he's the puppy when they're dogs, he really is older and more experienced than Chuck in a lot of ways.
He Followed Me Home. Can I Keep Him? {M}
Follows right after the events of Puppy Kisses. Chuck can't immediately talk about claiming. It's so personal for him, because it's one of the last things he shared with his mother. Plus, there's sex to be had. But he really, really doesn't want Raleigh to question how much Chuck wants to be with him, so... he talks. They really are getting better at this communication thing. And Herc may never not have heart eyes again.
Lavender's Blue, Dilly Dilly, Lavender's Green by Gothams_Only_Wolf {T}
Raleigh Becket loves to clean, do laundry and... well, sing. Chuck Hansen is a ruthless CEO who hates people in his sparkling clean flat. It's when the cleaning service Chuck hires screws up his place that he looks into hiring a new one. LOCCENT Laundry Services and a canceled meeting bring together two lonely souls. These Two Clownshoes {M}
When Chuck comes down with a virulent flu and makes himself impossible, Raleigh offers to step in to give Mako and Herc a breather, even though he's probably as welcome in Chuck's bunk as a new breed of kaiju. Chuck, however, is far more ill than he led everyone to believe, and Raleigh switches over to protective mode with a vengeance.
Recalibration {G}
This is Chuck's point of view of Chapter 10's sleepy cuddles.
The Right Sandalwood {T}
This is Chuck's POV of the lead-up to Raleigh's nightmare and the aftermath.
Happy Fucking Birthday {T}
Chuck suddenly remembers that it's Raleigh's birthday. Worse, it's his first birthday since they've been together, and Chuck feels like an asshole because how the hell could he forget? Christmas preparations for the shatterdome aside, this birthday should've been the first thing on his mind. Luckily, Herc is a strategist, and Chuck gets a lot of help from some familiar faces.
Discount Double-Check by GutterBall {T}
Raleigh's been working out at the Kaidanovskys' gym for years when Chuck moves into the neighborhood and blows in like an arrogant, angry hurricane. Everyone sort of avoids him, so -- for whatever reason -- The Jerk singles Raleigh out to hatch an evil plan to save 20% on his gym membership. Things go awry.
There Is No Loch Ness Monster in Maine by GutterBall {M}
When Chuck Hansen, paleontologist for a prestigious New York museum, catches his boss in flagrante with his dad, he's quickly shipped off to investigate a spurious report of an animal attack in Maine. There, he meets the snarky county sheriff, Mako Mori, and the "the only words I have are salty" Fish and Game officer, Raleigh Becket. Sarcastic shenanigans ensue, during which there might be a giant murderbeast swimming around some random lake in Maine. And Chuck gets routinely dunked in the lake and pelted with severed heads.
It Ain't Moonlight, But It'll Do by GutterBall {T}
Healing after closing the Breach doesn't mean no one has nightmares anymore. Sometimes, they're bad enough to make another attempt at sleep an awful idea. On those occasions, a former jaeger pilot might take a certain amount of comfort from walking the shatterdome hallways. Another former jaeger pilot might take solace from cooking amazing grilled cheese sandwiches in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the shatterdome kitchens. At some point, those paths almost have to cross, even if the stubborn jerks go out of their way not to cross paths any other time.
Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me by GutterBall {M}
Herc is desperate. He can understand Chuck not wanting anything to do with him, but the kid has deliberately shoved away everyone who might have gotten close to him and is determinedly alone in the world. So, he decides to talk to his ol' pal, Stacker Pentecost, who happens to run a private therapy center that offers a new, experimental treatment for people in Chuck's position. Pentecost's star caseworker? Raleigh "call me Cuddles" Becket. As Captain Jack Sparrow would say, complications arose and ensued.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner by GutterBall {E}
Raleigh Becket used to be the up-and-coming chef to beat in the competitive cooking show world. Then, after beating four Iron Chefs in a row, he disappeared, and everyone forgot about him. Five years and four months later, he signs up for a new cooking show, The Cutting Board, because he and Yancy desperately need the money. The problem? The show's executives think to improve ratings by forcing him to pretend to be the gay ex-lover of current cooking wunderkind, Chuck Hansen, arrogant jerk extraordinaire.
A Very Hansen Christmas by WeekendWriter {T}
If there's one thing Chuck isn't, it's contrary. He's not. And his family absolutely has something else to say about that. When Chuck takes to ignoring his newfound blonde friend from medical, Herc enlists Mako's scheming abilities to help get them back together. It takes a bit of mistletoe, some slight of engineering-hand, and one normally-missing Scott Hansen. Needless to say, it'll take a Christmas Miracle.
Special Delivery by GutterBall {G}
After Pitfall, Raleigh walked out of the shatterdome without so much as a goodbye. Shortly after, though, he started sending letters to Chuck. Nothing too flowery or soul-searchy. Just... letters. Chuck, who's not used to getting mail, isn't quite sure what to make of them. After eleven months, though, he's pretty sure he likes them.
...Mate by softjohn {G}
Raleigh’s small huff of laughter caught Chuck’s fading attention and he raised his head, eyes heavy, to see Raleigh smirking at him over his shoulder. ‘Never would’ve pegged you for such an aggressive cuddler,’ Raleigh said, clearly amused. Chuck grinned back at him. ‘I’m full of surprises, mate.’ Raleigh’s smirk faded into something softer. ‘Yeah, I noticed.'

Raleigh and Chuck are having a competition to see who is better at planning dates for the other. Too bad Chuck doesn't actually know about it.

(or: yancy is the ultimate wingman) "I think you should tell him how you feel," Yancy says. "Tell him how I feel?" Raleigh echoes. "Tell who?" Yancy nods at the table a few behind theirs, where Herc and Chuck are arguing over whether it's polite to let the dog eat at the table. "Herc?" Raleigh asks stupidly. "I don't feel anything for Herc." Yancy rolls his eyes, saying nothing. God help his moron of a brother.
Breeding Habits of the Stubborn Jaeger Pilot by Reiwyn {E}
OR Hansen’s the Endangered Species. With a population severely dwindled by the Kaiju war the human race must now resort to drastic measures in order to survive. Hence a new law is decreed, TOPA- The Omega Protection Act. It states all Omega must be mated by their first heat or assigned an Alpha by a outside official. Jaeger pilots are top of this list, viewed as heroes they are in high demand and to land one is like mating to royalty. That’s all great and dandy for some but with his first heat around the corner Chuck ain’t lettin’ no Alpha knock him up.

Raleigh doesn't know why Chuck's a vampire. All he knows is that the kid needs to feed. Unfortunately, the big jerk is picky, and Raleigh's blood apparently isn't quite gourmet. Thus, Chuck is frustratingly invested in Raleigh's health and demands that he improve his diet. It's a matter of taste.
Eat Me {M}
Chuck didn't ask to be turned into a vampire, but he isn't exactly mad about it, either. Herc keeps him well-fed, and his improved strength, reflexes, and speed are definitely bonuses in his line of work. Unfortunately, the Double Event forced Chuck to make a decision he'd intended to put off for years, if not forever, when Herc's arm is broken. They might have to drop for Pitfall at any moment, and whilst the marshal offered to pilot with Chuck, there's a simpler solution: turn Herc so he'll be healed and fit for battle. The only problem: there goes his convenient, voluntary food source. Enter one ambrosia-smelling Raleigh Becket.
Pain in the Neck {T}
Raleigh and Mako are stuck in the medical bay after Pitfall, recuperating from Gipsy's missing or smashed limbs and under observation from falling through the Throat. Everything seems fine until Herc casually mentions that Chuck would be fussed if Raleigh left and Raleigh suddenly realizes he hasn't so much as glimpsed Chuck since the mission. Which leaves them both wondering if Chuck has fed since then. Spoiler alert: he hasn't.
Yancy is so Done! by elrond50 {M}
Yancy loves his little brother, he really does, but there are limits.

Chuck Hansen just wants to go home. He hasn't seen his bed in days. Then his least favorite patient shows up in the ER, again. His day gets a lot better from there.

“When they found your escape pod, your suit had already melted into your skin. It took them hours to get it off. You had burns all over your body and they managed to save almost everything, but your leg...” “How long was I out?” “Two months.” He wonders what would've happened if his escape pod had drowned instead. [Chuck survives the Pitfall, all thanks to Pentecost, but it takes him a long time to readjust. After having accepted that he's going to die, learning how to live again is harder than he expected. And Ghost Drifting with his dead copilot isn't helping.]

Today’s subject is none other than Chuck Hansen, who is her absolute favourite when it comes to rumours – partly because there’s always been so few of them including him. And mostly because after Pitfall, the majority of them also involve Ranger Beckett. or: Chuck and Raleigh's relationship told by very observant outsiders and one Mako Mori.
(afoot and light-hearted) I take to the open road {T}
“I’m happy if you’re happy,” he replies, so very close to Chuck’s face that Chuck can see every little scar left on the man’s skin after years of working at the Wall. His eyes bore into Chuck’s, but they don’t make him uncomfortable. Raleigh never does. He thinks about it. Wonders, more like. “I am,” he whispers and, somehow, that’s true. “I’m happy.”

“I realise that continuing to station you here would not be productive, not only because of… personal reasons, but also because the Jaegers stationed here do not need any more engineers now that the majority of Gipsy’s engineers have been reassigned.” He watched as the Marshal made his way to the other side of the room, his steps slow and deliberate in a way that only Stacker Pentecost could manage. “Instead, should you choose to accept my offer, you will be stationed at the Sydney Shatterdome.” Sydney? Was there even a Mark-3 stationed there? “Vulcan Specter?” The Marshal didn’t respond immediately. “Striker Eureka.” Or: The AU where Raleigh becomes an engineer/technician for Striker Eureka instead of a Wall construction worker.
The Sound of Your Storm by EvilPeaches {M}
They Drift together twice. And no. Raleigh doesn’t want to do it a third time. Compared to Mako’s precise ocean of a mind, Chuck’s is a colossal shitstorm of daddy issues and grandiose views of self-importance. His neural grip is like holding hands with someone who doesn’t know how to let go. It’s way above Raleigh’s pay grade and his ‘has-been ass’ wants no part of it.
The New South Wales Driving Offences and Penalties Register by nerdqueenenterprise {T}
"Son," Herc says, sounding more incredulous than Chuck ever thought he could. "Are you telling me you incurred a fifteen thousand dollar fine because you couldn't wait to get home to shag your boyfriend?"
Completely Incompatible (Except in the Drift) by Hypropheni_a {E}
“Chuck,” Herc said, his tone cutting. “I just got off the phone with Stacker.” Hope flared to life in his chest for a moment, “About Striker?” “Yes, he’s found someone.” A grin found its way onto Chuck’s face, the irritation momentarily pushed aside, “Will we be able to go on active duty again, then?” Herc winced, hand clenching into a fist at his side. “Son…the Marshal is bringing Raleigh Becket in.” Or: Herc is injured two months before Mutavore, and Raleigh happens to be his replacement. At least until Gipsy Danger is repaired. The only issue? Chuck Hansen.

In order to close the segment of those small analyzes that I did, comparing some iconic couples for me, with that dynamic in their personal and sentimental relationships, a way of interacting similar to what they have been showing us with Din and Bo katan. I want to conclude with another couple of my favorites. Since I saw the movie, I knew they would end up together. And the chemistry in them was noticeable from the moment they met, acting only with verbal and visual interaction, at all times that physical and tacit attraction was noticeable; Just like what happened with Din and Bo but they want to continue denying it, of course, the cherry on the cake is not yet to come.
Mako and Raleigh from “Titans of the Pacific” played an excellent leading role in this film, they clearly worked very well together, their synchronicity was evident at all times and this completely helped so that together they could pilot the Jaeger, their level of compatibility, It was obvious, not just physical, their minds were connected… it was noticeable in their movements.
I love this parallelism to begin with because Din and Bo katan have that magic and that touch that is noticeable when they are together, you know that they are good companions, you can see the synchrony, respect and devotion. Both Mako and Raleigh and both Bo and Din have that very close interaction that it is not necessary for them to give each other affection in public so obviously or a cliche kiss… just one look is enough to understand them and to understand everything.
I continue with something that also seems nice to me; For example, the parallelism between Raleigh and Bo Katan, the connection between brothers, the bond so strong that that bond, when it goes through a difficult time, disappears from the physical plane, but it is still there. Raleigh takes the blame for a bad decision. Bo takes the blame for several bad decisions. Both a little bigger than their companions but with a giant and noble heart to protect them. With the wisdom to guide them in their own battles. Raleigh accompanies Mako in the Jaeger to save the world.
Bo Katan accompanies Din in the process of his redemption and to recover Mandalore and safeguard the galaxy. They are definitely the same in many ways.
Din has this very strong parallel with Mako because he is orphaned, just like her, in a traumatic moment for both of them. He because of the separatist droids, she because of the kaijus that invade the world. And they also share this same bond with someone who saves them at the last moment from a fatal destiny. Din is saved by a Mandalorian from the Death Guard… Mako is saved by the Marshal, thanks to his Jaeger, one of the first prototypes created to fight against the kaiju.
Din is adopted by these new people and their customs, he understands something elemental which is survival but he also clings to them and also develops respect for them and their beliefs despite whether he agrees or not. Mako is adopted by the Marshal and the entire military lifestyle that surrounds him, she appreciates this fact, she grows up with the intention of being a Jaeger pilot to honor her family, to destroy the kaijus and honor her master, she also develops respect for him and his decisions, despite sometimes not agreeing with him.
In addition to developing a certain interest in this new person they meet, wanting to protect them and also follow their path, definitely being too similar. I think Titans of the Pacific has a lot of Star Wars because it is as Filoni says, most of its stories focus on family and relationships. It is obvious that at the end of the day, many couples from cinema or TV, comics, literature, etc… coincide with this DinBo dynamic.
I hope you liked it, I will continue with other publications about this shipment and with a similar dynamic that I know you will like. This is the way

Who is doing better
Shirou in Brockton Bay or
Taylor in the fifth holy grail war
I sat with this for a bit and I think my answer is decidedly shirou. i'm thinking about it from the perspective of where their personalities would land them/lead them, and like...
neither her family background or relationship with her peers makes it easy to visualize Taylor as an establishment magus, and if she were to be a non-establishment magus (like Shirou), i don't think she'd have something like the insane confluence of events that lands someone with a special origin, or unique magecraft, or mystic eyes or what have you. she'd be nobody special, most likely the kind of person the Grail picks when there are no other promising candidates, a la Ryuunosuke.
i feel like her narrative arc would defined by her relationship with her servant, because without a catalyst, you end up summoning someone that's compatible with you, and I feel like the kind of hero that is compatible with Taylor is Not the kind of hero Taylor sees herself as being compatible with, most likely reflecting the ruthlessness at the core of Taylor rather than her idealism. ultimately, I think she gets outmaneuvered and killed by just about any of the fifth grail war participants unless Rin or Caster take pity on her
now Shirou is a dream host for a shard. no self-preservation, eager to get into conflict if it means saving others, lots of possibilities for trigger events, he has it all. if anything he's so zealously committed to putting himself in danger that you'd want to give him a brute secondary or some other means of avoiding or resisting damage so he doesn't burn out too fast, but whatever it is he's doing, he's doing it single-mindedly and he's doing it Well
i'm not sure where he'd fit in, since it would depend on how his background translates to worm, but it's worth noting that while it seems more natural for him to end up a hero, Shirou doesn't actually seem to hold strong opinions when it comes to criminality. he knows old man Fujimura is a yakuza, which also implicates Kiritsugu in illegality in some way, and never bats an eye about it, so there is a path where Shirou in Brockton Bay ends up as a vigilante or a nominal villain. i don't think its the most likely scenario, but its a definite possibility, especially if he makes the kind of ties that would lead him down a Heaven's Feel-esque or Shirou-into-Archer road.

3 Houses Dimiclaude Appreciation Post
There are so many hinted aspects of compatibility that make Dimitri and Claude fun together. It starts with the simple things, such as their similar taste in tea...
Dimitri's favorite tea: Chamomile Claude's favorite teas: Almyran Pine Needles, Chamomile
To their mutual love of riding...
Dimitri's likes: Combat, high-quality weapons, strength training, going for long rides, physically laborious work Claude's likes: Feasts, long rides, archery, topics of curiosity
Dimitri's favorite items: Training Weight, Whetstone, Riding Boots, Ceremonial Sword Claude's favorite items: Riding Boots, Book of Crest Designs, Exotic Spices, Board Game
To their long nights researching in the library...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They even had similarly strange, harsh warrior cultures they grew up in and tell stories about...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Neither of them is okay with the death of innocents...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or people dying on their behalf...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even at his worst (Gronder), Dimitri is practically patient in his verbal response to Claude compared to everyone else, asking him to move instead of dismissing him or threatening to kill him...
Dimitri vs others: You're not worth it. Get out of my sight. Dimitri vs Byelth: Are you trying to stop me too? Then I'll just have to kill you! Dimitri vs Claude: Move Claude. I have no time to exchange words with you.
At his best in Chapter 19 of Azure Moon, they trust each other against all odds, and Dimitri cannot complete his story without saving Claude...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dimitri: I will not let Claude die...Let's hurry to his rescue.
And Claude bets on just how kind Dimitri is, showing an understanding of his struggles with the weight of leadership and loss, promising to meet again with no strings attached...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They show regret for the suffering of the less fortunate...
Dimitri's ask box: I lived in the slums for a long time, and I saw how the people there suffered from poverty and the ravages of war. There must be something I can do to save them. Correct answer: Strive to change Fodlan from the ground up.
Claude: The nobles start the war, but it's the commoners who spill their blood first...
They want to break down ideological barriers that keep people prejudiced and hateful, with Dimitri learning to let go of his hatred of those who caused the Tragedy to ultimately uphold this ideal...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And they make good on that promise on their own in their respective paths, focusing on foreign relations as a major part of their policy...
Dimitri Solo Ending: After his coronation, Dimitri spent his life reforming and ruling justly over Fódlan. He focused particularly on improving living situations for orphans and improving foreign relations. He was known for listening intently to the voices of all, and for instituting a new form of government in which the people were free to be active participants. He lived for his people and alongside them, and was thusly dubbed the Savior King. Claude Solo Ending: Claude returned to his homeland of Almyra and assumed the role of a politically active prince. After inheriting the throne, he worked to improve relations with Fódlan. In addition to establishing new trade routes, he fostered trust by sending reinforcements into Fódlan to help quell revolts by the remnants of the Imperial loyalists. Under his guidance, the peoples of Fódlan and Almyra were finally able to set aside age-old prejudices, and over time, the fallacies of old were all but forgotten.
They bicker sometimes...

Admire each other at others...

But most of all, they share tiny moments of fondness that are as sweet as they are unexpected if you aren't looking for it.
