You can fight me on this, IDGAF, but "I'm not talking about killing Penguin, or Scarecrow, or Dent, I'm talking about him. Just him. And doing it because... because he took me away from you." is one of DC's most perfectly crafted short monologues ever. It sums up a whole character in a few, simple lines. It sums up Jason's motives, hopes, and pain.

So I'm someone who started out reading dc fanfic but is now starting to get into actual source material.
I just watched Under the Red Hood and holy crap Jason gets mischaracterized so much in fandom. Like I know a lot of people have talked about this already but whatever.
Jason, so often is described in fanfic as impulsive or emotional, as someone who "thinks with his fists" rather than his head, when that couldn't be further from the truth.
In UtRH, this guy is able to manipulate so many key players into ending up exactly where he wants him, and yet people are still think he's one of the dumber members of the batfamily.
TL;DR - jason is way smarter than the fandom gives him credit for. I'm definitely not the first to say this, but it's not said enough.

red hood: kill the joker!
batman: i can’t.
red hood: fuck your stupid moral co-
batman: no i mean. i literally can’t he has political immunity from another country and killing him could start an international war.
red hood: …what
batman: superman actually had to stop me from killing the joker. then nightwing beat him to death and i had to revive him
red hood: dickiebird did WHAT?!
batman:
red hood:
batman: …jay-lad?
jason, pulling off his helmet: what the fuck bruce. why didn’t you just fucking say that. i went to all this effort for nothing!?
bruce: you’re alive? 🥹
jason: yes but more importantly i wasted so much time and effort and i can’t even kill the guy? what the shit, man. this is the worst

One of the things I don't see discussed a lot when we talk about Jason and Bruce's confrontation in under the red hood is the fact that Blüdhaven just exploded right in the middle of it and Jason is being very cavalier (I'm being really nice here, he is straight up gloating) about Dick's potential death and that kinda would change the way the fight would go.
Suddenly the stakes are not just: "Joker is going to die" it's "my oldest son might be dead or dying and my second son won't stop the fight no matter what, I need this fight to be over very quickly".

I would give anything for a Red Hood: Year One.
Start with a speed through of UtRH, picking up with a jason with his throat cut open by a batarang, lying in the wreckage of a building he blew up, batman and joker escaping, without him.
He has a criminal empire, the enmity of just about everyone in Gotham, and no plan. He is alive purely by coincidence.
How did he go from that to the guy we see post-Rebirth? What happened to his influence over gotham, all his underlings and suppliers? What happened to his relationship with Talia? What laid the foundations for the grudging acceptance of his family? What happened the next time he faced batman, with the ever widening gulf between them?
Whether it’s leaning into villainy and canonising Scarlet and the Pill Helmet, or the start of his depressed burn out era, or a genuine reconciliation with the bats, i want to see it examined from his perspective as one coherent narrative.

Reading UTRH and in awe of how calculated and planned out all of Jason's little schemes are. Last minute shipment no one knows about? Red Hood does and he's blowing you up. Secret little meeting? Red Hood is crashing the party after leisurely eavesdropping. Oh wait he's cornered and fleeing? Nope, that's a microgun and wearable box of ammo he hid outside the door, you're still the sucker here.
Jason was putting in WORK

Can someone genuinely answer this ever lingering question as to why DC has such beef with Jason Todd?
They butcher his character and relationships, and for what? There’s so much fucking POTENTIAL not only with his character but with his story! There’s a way to actually write discourse in a relationship without making it so damn abusive. Maybe I’m missing something in the story or just in general, but it’s just so fucking irritating when it could be good.
You have a nice, good boy who only wants to help despite given the short hand in life who is then given a loving father who just so happens to be Batman. That boy is then murdered by Batman’s biggest enemy (don’t even get me started on the fucking Joker who essentially has become idolized in the worst ways by DC writers and directors) still trying to do the right thing despite being fucked over by the very person he so desperately wanted love from. Then, you have that same boy who’s just a little bit older, hurting and angry— acting out in every way he can against the man who loves him but couldn’t see past his own weaknesses. And what do DC writers do instead of making this complicated, intriguing and character growing relationship into something that’s not as fucking dumb and slightly out of character for Batman? They fuck him up.
It’s an extreme to say this, I know. And this isn’t against all DC writers, but you can’t deny a lie when it’s a pattern. It’s a cut and dry story that practically writes itself. You have a little boy who is so full of hope is growing along with the main character of the story (which, in my own personal opinion, Batman has Robin not as a soldiers—and omfg does that damn phrase make me violent—but as a potential, mutual factor of character growth) , who then gets a bit too cocky and distracted by his own hubris and need for love, to a hurt antagonist that goes against the man who he once called father. Like it’s too easy to not fuck this up, and yet DC seems to manages to do this every single time.
It’s almost like they want to portray Batman and Bruce Wayne as a man who is made “tougher” by his trauma (which has some patriarchal undertones if you catch my drift) instead of growing. Batman can grow. He can love. There’s one post that I’ve seen on Tumblr how Batman/Bruce does this whole vigilante thing out of love.
Which is why I don’t get why DC uses Bruce as a tool to hurt Jason when it isn’t really consistent. He loved Jason, and this is backed up by a lot of older and a few current issues. Don’t get me wrong, I get that their relationship post-UTRH is gonna be FUCKED. Yet, even the writing in that I can’t really agree with. KILLING (attempting to kill really) your son who had been dead for years, that you loved so much, and is acting out because YOU? Doesn’t make much sense, but, again, maybe I’m looking at this through a foggy lens.
This wasn’t meant to be a long post, but it’s just been on my mind and perhaps I could use another perspective. So, again, what’s DC’s deal with Jason and Bruce’s relationship, and Jason’s character as a whole?

It's finally here!!!
Tumblr media
Graphic design is my passion LMFAO but as i said i would do a while back,i've created a masterpost of all the Jason Todd content that's worth your time! This is rather long but he's existed since 1983 so!!
Base edit is my little sister @mayameanderings and tagging @coffeemilkcatz and @nanaonmars since they said yes when i asked if they wanted me to!Let's dive in then!
Batman 408-426,Detective comics 568-582,Superman annual 11,New Teen Titans 18-31,Blue Devil 19,Action comics 556 and 594,Batman Annuals 10-12 and Batman(The cult)for pre-reboot Robin!Jason my beloved
Nightwing Year One 101-106,New Teen Titans 55,Nightwing 10(1997)and Legends of the Dark Knight 100 for Dick and Jason siblinghood,Gotham Knights 34 for the short story of him and Alfred and Detective comics 790 for Bruce telling Cass about him as it takes place on Jason's birthday
Lost Days aka the Red Hood prologue
Under The Red Hood(2010)-The original comic is good in it's own right but the movie is leagues better written(Rare comic book adaption exception lmao)
Robin 177 and 182-183 for tha actual Tim and Jason beef instead of 'replacement' and 'enemy to caretaker' bs
Azreal:Death's Dark Knight 3(Can't give commentary on this one since i don't know Azreal like that, sorry)
Red Hood and The Outlaws(2016).Unlike the Utrh comic vs the Utrh movie, the original Rhato has nothing positive like the reboot
Not TECHNICALLY Jason BUT Duke is his favorite brother and Stephanie's the only Batfam girl he's truly close to so you should also stan them since he'd want you to /lh
Red Hood:Outlaw for the confirmation that Red Hood loves black women from infinity to infinityyyyy(meaning his love interest Dana Harlowe is introduced and featured as an mc in this run)
Urban Legends 1-6 for his return to the Batfam-Messy tbh but i do enjoy parts of it!
Task Force Z for him and Stephanie being a vigilante team and it has a prelude, that being Detective comics 1041-1043
Unkillables and Joker:The Man Who Stopped Laughing for Jayrose goodies and more of the above
Gotham War if you feel like turning off your brain to look at good art and laugh at dogshit writing
Red Hood:The Hill is his current run and when our queen Dana comes home from comics limbo!!!
The following is a misc list that's not required to include in your Jason knowledge but HIGHLY recommended you do just for fun!
Tiny Titans 23,29,33,39,45 and 47,Bombshells 46,60 and 62,Bombshells United 18-24,Lego Batman:Family Matters,A Death In The Family 2020,Batman:The Adventures Continue,Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 5-6,The Doom That Came to Gotham 2023 and The Teen Titans Go episode 'The Best Robin'(Pre-Reboot Robin Jason rights!!!).Also look up 'Nobody cares about Tim Drake' if you don't know what that is,you'll love it
Jason also appears in the Lego DC Super Villains games that i highly recommend as well especially because my girlfriend is a mega fan of it and i don't know much about Lego Batman 3:Beyond Gotham but please avoid the aformentioned original Rhato,Red Hood:Outlaws and the Gotham Knights game as they feature extremely problematic writing not limited to but including racialized misogyny and ableism and do disservice to Jason himself anyway so you wouldn't want to consume them to begin with if you want to like him.I have mixed feelings on the Arkham Knight and Injustice games series' but they are objectively fairly good so i wouldn't say no to giving them a shot to see if you like them
And for the finale we have Wayne Family Adventures-Definitely a good read but to be totally honest it does Duke DIRTY and it sucks so much of DC to have marketed as his series to not only not follow through at all and make it an ensemble cast instead but ALSO deprive him of his actual characterization and story to make him a demure weak black boy stereotype.I won't judge you at all for liking it if you decided to read it or have already but kindly keep this in mind and consider joining me and my mutuals in our rewrite of it to give our Signal of Hope and Chaos the writing he deserves or at least support us through likes and reblogs!Happy Jason readings and have a good day💕

What’s funny to me is that there is literally no wrong way to write Jason Todd because of how many different personalities he’s had because writers didn’t know how to write him.
He’s a little nerd
He’s a mass murderer
He’s a calculating mastermind
He’s a dumb impulsive hot head
He hates the Batfam
He loves the Batfam, but it’s complicated
He has magical swords
He a rootin’ tootin’ gun shooting’ machine
Like since DC decided to bring Jason Todd back from the dead he’s had so many different iterations, that it doesn’t matter how you write him, it’s probably going to be right if you grab a certain comic or show/movie representation of him.
