Ace Attorney Lawyers Ranked By Their Abilities in Physical Combat
Winston Payne: I’m pretty sure the average Tumblr user could kill Winston Payne with their bare hands.
Sebastian DeBeste: Look, the only reason why this wimp ranks higher than Payne is because he is so sopping wet pathetic that there is a significant chance that his opponent will just start feeling bad about kicking his ass and punch themself in the face instead.
Klavier Gavin: While Klavier is a physically fit young man who is known to keep his cool in extreme situations, he is also a giant law-abiding nerd who has never thrown a punch at anything that isn’t an inanimate wall. It probably wouldn’t be that hard to shove this guy into a locker.
Miles Edgeworth: Look, Miles is an even bigger locker-worthy nerd than Klavier. Anytime anyone, friend or foe, suggests a violent solution he just gets freaked out and begs for them to follow procedures. And no AA Lawyer is more easily thrown off his rhythm and startled than he is. He might have some bulk under the magenta and frills (or at least some impressive leg muscles from climbing 12 flights of stairs every day for like seven years), but he has no idea or will to actually use them in a fight. However, he did try and stare down a man who was aiming a gun at his back that one time and managed to keep his cool throughout all of this.
Tumblr media
So like, he’d probably talk a big game and try and intimidate his opponent into not engaging - but if that won’t work he will get his ass thoroughly whooped. And then he’d try to sue them, which is what his threats were about all along.
Apollo Justice: Actually a considerable step up in power-levels from the previous ones. Apollo might be smol, but he is Done With Your Shit and this gives him Strength. Not to mention that one time he successfully tanked an explosion. His famous Chords of Steel can also serve as a tactic to confuse or weaken his enemies.
Kristoph Gavin: Although he is primarily known for his schemes and poisoning, he did kill a man with a single blow to the forehead with a bottle, showing he does have some decent upper-body-strength to use in a fight. And being known as ‘the Coolest Defense in the West’ means he can keep his calm even during hectic combat. But he’s also very pretentious and his constant pontifications might just be the perfect opportunity for someone to smash his face in.
Blaise Debeste: Okay, look, is Blaise a scary tall man who successfully stabbed a woman to death with a candelabra and constantly carries around a deceptively-powerful lighter and has like, implied, motorcycle gang background? Yes. But also I think anyone who encounters Blaise Debeste face-to-face is overcome with such bloodlust rage that it might give them an edge in the battle against him.
Mia Fey: Mia ranks fairly high on the Battle Scale considering the one time she was faced with a violent altercation she just tried to escape and it… didn’t end well.
Tumblr media
However, in the two times we get to play as her it’s also clear that she wants to Punch. All of the Things. While Apollo is fueled by being Done With Your Shit, Mia has righteous anger - so I think in a situation where she is actually prepared to do battle she would be able to throw a few decent punches. Also assuming we are talking about Mia while she was still alive, there’s also her Spirit Channeling powers to account for. While we’ve never seen them on screen, Maya told us they are “first rate” and I believe her. Maybe she could channel the spirit of a great warrior to try and get an edge in combat?
Manfred Von Karma: While he also has the same Bloodlust-Inducing-Factor as Blaise, and he does seem less physically fit even though they’re about the same age - I feel like his cane could do more serious damage than Blaise’s lighter. And he has that dangerous fucking Stun Gun on him to easily neutralize opponents. Plus, he did tank that one gunshot he got in the shoulder. Manfred’s opponents might have Rage on their side, but also you cannot underestimate the power of his sheer Spite.
Godot: On one hand, Godot has shown an ability to keep his cool in very dangerous situations. He can smash a coffee cup with his bare hands and barely react, showing that he’s decently strong and resilient to pain. And he is yet another proud (?) member of the exclusive “Lawyers With a Body Count Club”. And while stabbing a waifish, 155cm college student (and part time-poisoner) in the back isn’t exactly the most epic demonstration of battle prowess in the history of Anime Lawyers - he did it (and moved the body and doctored the crime scene and prosecuted in court) while tanking a knife slash in his face, showing his pain-resilience once again, as well as general tenacity that would also be useful in battle. Also, he can summon an infinite amount of hot coffee mugs at will, which must make for a decent improvised long-ranged attack.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, his health is also heavily implied to be deteriorating and that he’s basically dying over the course of the final case… possibly due to all of that physical exhaustion. If a fight goes longer than just a single backstab, I feel like these health complications are gonna harm Godot’s performance.
Phoenix Wright: Okay, so this is actually the hardest one to place. I keep flip-flopping on where to put him, especially compared to Mia, and Apollo. Because unlike most other lawyers currently ranked below him, he is a disaster when it comes to being on the offensive; Phoenix Wright is a total wimp who has never returned a punch in his life. However, he is also almost supernaturally durable, unbelievably lucky and deceptively strong. If a solid iron door, a raging freezing river and a speeding car didn’t manage to take him down, what chance does a fellow human, even a more combat-capable one, have???
Calisto Yew: She’s not even a real-lawyer! She’s a Secret Spy who successfully pretended to be a Lawyer for years! She’s got a gun, she’s got a knife, she's got crossbow bolt as hair decorations, she probably has some combat training from her time in Interpol… While she’s clearly more specialized for espionage and infiltration, and not as physically strong as Lang, she’s still got an impressive advantage over most of the regular people who went to Law School. In fact, her skill with barefaced lies and manipulation might also be a skill she could use in a fight to catch her opponent off-guard.
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi: Nahyuta is, in fact, one of the few AA Lawyers to canonically participate in what I would unambiguously call a ‘fight’ (rather than a ‘murder’), when he single-handedly disarmed and apprehended a Defiant Dragon rebel in the sorta-canon ‘Spirit of Justice’ Prologue video.
Tumblr media
Like, that rebel guy probably isn't the world's greatest warrior, but the Defiant Dragons have been around for enough time to give their members at least some basic self-defense/combat skills… more so than the average lawyer on this list at minimum. And Nahyuta very easily crab-stomped him. Showing that he has strong nerves, some amazing reflexes and the martial art skills to knock a man unconscious with a single blow. Not to mention the seemingly supernatural skills with his prayer beads, which he already uses as a sort of ‘weapon’ in court. Also that... thing he did to Apollo's bracelet that one time.
Tumblr media
Nahyuta might be just straight-up Magic, that's pretty OP.
Franziska von Karma: Look, Franziska might not have official martial-arts, guns, or Literal Magic Powers - but what she does have is sheer determination and force or personality. Franziska von Karma has been intimidating grown men since she was a 149 cm tall 13 years old with a riding crop (I mean, one of those men was Miles, but still…..). She had once whipped Phoenix Wright into unconsciousness in a temper tantrum, and like I already mentioned that taking him down is quite a feat. She is also very resilient - while the shot to her shoulders was designed not to kill her, being up back on her feet doing investigation stuff a day after is still very impressive! Her whip might not be as dangerous as a sword or a gun, but she will not relent until she defeats you.
Simon Blackquill: Let me just give it to you straight, Simon Blackquill is 1.88 meter tall, he owns a katana and a trained attack-hawk (giving him both short range and far range advantage), he can break solid metal chains with his bare hands, he can cut your hair halfway across the room with a feather. Not to mention how he could probably use the whole psychological manipulation in battle to intimidate or goad his enemy. There’s not even a lot of funny or interesting points to bring up, he is literally an action movie character who just happens to also be a lawyer.
Athena Cykes: Athena Cykes is the strongest lawyer. One day, she’ll be stronger than whales. I believe in her.

PLEASE elaborate on the phoenix and franziska shenanigans during the 7yg you have NO idea how much i like them
I am someone who loved the investigative portion of Bridge to the Turnabout where Franziska had to babysit Phoenix when he wasn't allowed to follow Miles and Iris. I think when he's not her rival defense attorney and is looking particularly pathetic, she is actually pretty chill around him. She is not exempt from his aura that gets young women to imprint on him and follow him around.
She is genuinely offended on his behalf when he gets disbarred because he beat Miles and Manfred and even her! why the hell would he cheat in a case against a teenager! She does not think for a second that he forged that diary page because she knows firsthand how he throws himself into things and cannot prepare an entire evil plan for shit. However, she does not know how to convey this to him so she bullies Miles into flying him and Trucy around because Miles is almost too good at being resigned to pine sadly from a distance.
It's also important to know that she sees Phoenix being a caring father to Trucy and as someone who never really had a valid father, decided that maybe (ex) defense attorneys have rights... Even if Miles didn't get his shit together to put a ring on That Man's finger, Franziska would find herself in Phoenix's found family, it's only a matter of time.
For some reason Phoenix doesn't go to court with Edgeworth, maybe he can't stand being there while not being a lawyer, maybe he forgot he wasn't an attorney once and got kicked out for yelling out an objection, it doesn't matter, Trucy gets to be Edgeworths weirdgirl assistant and Phoenix is stuck investigating with Franziska and they are the worst people to keep each other out of trouble. We're talking about 'guy who ran across a burning bridge' and 'woman who got shot in the shoulder and still managed to get to court eventually' they are an unstoppable duo when they find something they can both get behind.
If anyone can slowly get Franziska to loosen up and learn to embrace the childhood that she lost, it would be Phoenix. I mean, this girl passed the bar at like 13 there was no way she had time to binge she-ra and check out books on drawing horses from the library. He would convince her to get a cat who hangs out in a window backpack that she can carry around during her travels because it turns out that her life is kinda lonely and she totally seems like the cat lesbian type. She is also allergic to cats so she has to get a sphinx or a devon rex or just the most gargoyle/ golbin looking creature to walk on this earth. That just seems like her vibe.

The "Ice Cream Killer"
Pictured above is a woman named Goidsargi Estibaliz "Esti" Carranza Zabala, who was arrested in June 2011 for the brutal murders of her ex-husband and boyfriend.
The bodies of Holger Holz (ex-husband) and Manfred Hinterberger (boyfriend) were discovered by workers carrying out maintenance in the ice cream parlour where Carranza worked in Austria, Vienna. Both men had been shot in the back of the head, dismembered with a chainsaw, frozen for a short time and then concealed in blocks of concrete and hidden in the cellar of the store.
Although the victims had been killed and disposed of in very similar circumstances, the murders were carried out two years apart. Carranza, who was 33 years old at the time of her arrest, confessed to killing her husband in 2008 because he refused to move out following their divorce, and said he was violent, lazy and a bully. She shot him in the back of the head three times while he sat at his computer.
In 2010, Carranza's new boyfriend met the same fate after the pair got into a drunken argument. She suspected he was cheating on her, for which she had no evidence, and to end the argument he turned to face away from her in bed and went to sleep. Enraged, Carranza took out the same gun she had used to kill her ex-husband and shot him in the back of the head.
After finding out the remains had been discovered, Carranza fled to Italy but was quickly captured and extradited back to Austria. During the trial, a PowerPoint presentation showed photographs of the victims' sawn-off heads and other severed limbs, prompting the chief prosecutor to describe Carranza as a "highly dangerous woman" whose actions were "depraved and horrific".
In November 2012, Carranza was sentenced to life in a psychiatric institution. Her lawyer Rudolf Mayer - who also defended Josef Fritzl - said at the time he would appeal to have the verdict overturned.
At the time of her arrest, Carranza was two months pregnant to another man, whom she later went on to marry while incarcerated. After the birth, her baby boy was taken away to be raised by Carranza's parents in Barcelona, and Carranza sought to apply for a transfer to Spain so she could remain in contact with her son.

Soooooooo mad that Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice introduces the concept of judicial reform when by the time the original trilogy is over, all these characters have been so thoroughly fucked by the legal system that they're not only primed for abolition, they would probably wouldn't be opposed to burning the relevant buildings to the ground. Maya Fey has been falsely accused God knows how many times, has had to stumble across her sister's corpse because the local legal community repeatedly decided it wasn't worth risking their professional reputations to stop a blatantly dangerous and incompetent individual, and now that same legal community is sending the only person within it who cared about this fumble to jail (or possibly death), even though he already died once via trying to carry out justice through that very same the system.
Phoenix only joined the legal system to rescue Miles from it, the system that frames cases as having a "winner" and "loser," thus creating the mindset that rewarded Manfred Von Karma's behavior. Miles spends Game 2 babbling that crap about finding the truth that is no way supported by the system (likely huffing copium tbh) but regardless, by the time Game 3 rolls around, even he accepts that he will have to commit fraud in order for justice to be served, aided and abetted by Franziska. And they get away with it super easily, because the system is as incompetent as it is inherently, purposefully unjust.
And then AA4 has the audacity to ask us to believe a JURIST SYSTEM will help at all?
You think a JURIST SYSTEM would acquit ADRIAN ANDREWS, an unknown, mentally-ill woman, heavily implied to be sexually active, who fans of Juan and Matt would see as disloyal to both? A woman who not only cultivated the persona of "ice bitch," but followed it up with the PR mortal sin of letting her ice bitch persona crumble into tears and begging for help? You think a jurist system would acquit HER, compared to Matt "Refreshing As A Spring Breeze" Engarde? The only reason she gets acquitted in canon is because Gumshoe-- not a cop anymore-- steals from cops, and Franziska voluntarily decides to bring in the completely illegal, stolen evidence, and even THEN, they know they can't get justice from the system. They have to ask for justice from a hitman, who grants it, because even a killer for hire has more potential for morality than the legal system. Maya's rescue and Adrian's exoneration happen not because of the competency of the police system or the court system, but rather, explicitly in spite of standard legal procedures.
So YOU'RE telling ME that when Phoenix gets DISBARRED, not only does he want to get back to law, but his solution after 7 years of scheming is just...the shitty justice system already not working in the real world? REALLY? All this shit happens, and Klavier Gavin is MORE committed to being a lawyer instead of rebranding as an ACAB solo act? REALLY?!?!??
(I cannot even get into the hellscape that is Ema Skye feeling an OBLIGATION to this system in ANY CAPACITY, LET ALONE...)
"oh we made a sequel to the trilogy--" you fucked up a perfectly good narrative accidentally demonstrating why the law does not exist to keep us safe, is what you did! Look at it! It's got undermining neighborhood conflict resolution in favor of increasing the narrative support for copaganda!

In Justice We Trust (95196 words) by thesavagesabretooth
With Simon Blackquill and Athena Cykes assigned as their psychologists, the Phantom and Fulbright must grapple with their identity, their deeds, their future, and their love for the twisted samurai whom they betrayed.
All the while, Edgeworth and Wright find their relationship tested as they walk the narrow path between pursuing real justice, and the dark age of the law.
-
December 25, 7:45 am
Gumshoe followed miserably along with the furious Apollo Justice as the lawyer slammed his way through the hotel, looking for Mr. Edgeworth.
“Hey, pal..” Gumshoe slumped along at top speed after Apollo, as fast as his worn out old boots could carry him. “I know you ain’t happy, but let’s try to breathe huh?”
"I'm breathing," Apollo said– despite sounding quite breathless, and his face being quite red. "I'm very aware that I'm breathing right now, Detective Gumshoe. Where can I find the chief prosecutor?"
“I’m gonna be honest with you, pal. You lookin’ the way you do right now? I ain’t sure it’s the best idea to tell ya. You look like you’re two steps from a Third Degree Murder.”
Gumshoe didn’t like seeing the man this way. Apollo was a good kid, but worked up the way he was now, he was likely to hurt someone. Lash out, like that Aura woman had back at the space center with her hostages. Or like too many crimes he’d seen in the past.
“Would you want Trucy to see you like this, kid?” Sometimes you had to make an emotional bid to calm someone down. Remind them of something important, friends, family, loved ones.
Apollo paused in his stride for a moment– but then kept marching. "No. Not that she hasn't seen me angry. But sometimes anger is important, Gumshoe. I'm not going to hurt anyone. I would never do that– unlike some people."
Maybe Gumshoe had gotten through to him at least a little bit– because his steps had slowed, and while the snap in his voice was still there, it was a bit less sharp.
“I get it, pal. Trust me. I’ve seen plenty done in anger…” He hurried up to put his hand on his shoulder with a sigh. “Just try not to say nothin’ you’ll regret in the mornin’.”
Apollo stopped again, and he rubbed his shoulders as he stood there, rolling them under his hand. "Gumshoe– thanks for trying to look out for me. But… you really have no idea what I'm going through right now."
“Yeah, that’s true pal. I mean, I dunno the specifics…and I dunno much, I ain’t a bright guy…but I can tell you’re still hurtin’ from losin’ someone.” He rubbed his neck. “I felt the same way when I thought Mr. Edgeworth had gone off an’ killed himself.”
That seemed to throw Apollo for a loop. "What?"
Gumshoe’s rugged face flushed under the scruff of his beard, and he rubbed his chin with a sigh “...back after he an’ Phoenix Wright had their first clashes in court, and the truth came out about his mentor Manfred Von Karma…Mr. Edgeworth and I were…are…real close. Always have been since I was assigned to him and since. He’s…”
He trailed off… important to me. A lot like Maggey is. She knew how much him and Mr. Edgeworth had shared together. “He and I worked close together. But after that, he vanished. Left a suicide note or somethin’ that sounded just like it, and vanished into the night for long enough we almost declared him dead. Broke my fuckin’ heart, kid. I was fallin’ to pieces. Woulda, if it weren’t for Maggey.”
Apollo was quiet for a moment. "Gumshoe– I'm sorry. I never knew about that. It uh, well I guess it explains some of the comments Phoenix has made about Miles before…"
He rubbed his chin. "But he wasn't really gone though… how long did you think?"
“Too damn long.” Gumshoe murmured. “he wasn’t really gone, but for those months of searching, he may as well have been. I didn’t think I’d see him again. So…yeah. I dunno how you feel, kid. Not exactly. But I got some idea, okay?”
"Maybe, but…" he rubbed the back of his neck. "Even when you thought Mr. Edgeworth was gone, you didn't think he'd been murdered. You weren't– you weren't being asked to go to work with his killer, Gumshoe, and pretend nothing was wrong. Don't you feel like that's a bridge too far?"
“I dunno, pal.” Detective Gumshoe set his jaw.
“I’ve seen some things over the years. Every time I think ‘maybe this is a bridge too far’, I think to myself ‘but what’s on the other side’. I dunno why Mr. Edgeworth invited you on this knowin’ you’d have to face the guy…maybe he thought you’d be even angrier if you found out, and weren’t invited at all.”
"I don't know what the hell he was thinking," he said, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Which is exactly why I want to find out. But– you're a dependable kind of guy, Gumshoe. If you think I should wait to ask until later, I'll do that."
Gumshoe patted his shoulder “...If you wanna talk to him now, I can tell ya where he is. Just…try not to lose your cool. You ain’t gonna get answers if you barge in there seein’ red.”
"You're right." He set his jaw. "You'll see him today, right?"
“Of course. He’s supposed ta check in with me before heading out to give me instructions.”
"Alright. Tell him I want to talk to him tonight. Tell him to come see me. You can tell him what it's about, too."
Gumshoe nodded.
“you got it pal, I’ll pass it along to him nice an’ proper. Alright?” He patted his shoulder again, and Apollo put his hand on his for a moment. “Take care of yourself till then, alright?”
"Yeah Gumshoe. I'm gonna try to do that." He took a deep breath. "Thanks. Really."
Gumshoe gave him his best chummy smile. “Any time, kid. You ever need anything, feel free to hit up your friendly neighborhood Gumshoe, eh?”
December 25, 9:00 am
Simon stood back and assessed the scene after they'd finished their initial tour of the crime scene.
Two cars, the first of which had– apparently, according to the tire marks– swerved in front of the second car which then hit it. There was a second streak of tire marks from the second car where it had attempted, futilely, to brake at the last second. Both cars had burned so hot, and so long that they were destroyed and almost unrecognizable. There was a body in the front driver's seat of each car, both of which were heavily destroyed by the same fire.
Ema's analysis had not turned up any finger prints– unsurprising, given the fire– but she had discovered traces of unburned gasoline leading up to the scene of the two cars. And an assessment with luminol had turned up the most surprising feature of the case yet– a few drops of blood on the pavement between the two cars, which someone had attempted to wipe away.
And now that they were certain there were no fingerprints to miss, Ema was assisting in opening the cars, and examining what was left of the bodies.
Athena had been logging the entire investigation into Widget’s note function, drawing lines and notes between photographs taken with the small device in a rather interesting expose on how she conducted her investigations for the defense. She’d seemed most interested in the blood, writing out theories on exactly what it might mean while Ema worked with Agent Kelso.
Ema wrenched the door open with the agent’s help, with Ema holding her arm out to stop Kelso from moving the body until she took a picture.
“There. Lay them out on the ground. I’ll begin the examination.”
Halblicht stood to the side as Kelso moved the body out of the car under Ema's instructions, and Simon noticed him watching the agent carefully. He'd noticed, in fact, that Halblicht had been watching both interpol agents carefully since the investigation had begun. He wondered what was on his mind– perhaps he was concerned that the agents might recognize him?
Whatever it was, it was of little consequence now, while they were investigating. Frankly as long as Halblicht didn't try to flee, or to tamper with the evidence– both of which were seeming less and less likely– Simon didn't care what he did.
He was loath to admit it, but he was almost enjoying the opportunity to work the case with the man, and with Athena.
Halblicht's gaze flicked from Kelso to the burned remains, which were, admittedly, difficult to look at for Simon. The monstrous things that fire did to the human body.
"Uuuh, is anyone seeing what I'm seeing?" Bobby asked after a moment.
Kelso looked up as Ema began her examination, starting from the head and going down with a magnifying glass and tweezers to peel away what little remained of clothing and charred flesh when she needed to.
“Seeing what, Detective Halblicht? The dead man? Yeah, I do.” she’d taken to flipping the bullet again, the clicking of metal on metal ringing out adding a sort of background track to the proceedings.
“Mm…if you’re talking about the bullet wound to the face, yes. I’ll work on extracting the bullet when I’m done with my preliminary examination of the rest of the body, “ Ema murmured from her work.
Athena looked a bit sick to her stomach as she glanced at Halblicht. “I haven’t gotten close, what is it?”
Halblicht snapped into his ridiculous Bobby Fulbright salute at Athena. "Ms. Cykes– there's what appears to be a large bullet hole in the front of this man's skull."
"Not what one usually expects from a car wreck, admittedly," Simon drawled.
“Not unless it was an execution.” Ema said casually. “You sometimes see it, someone gets close and fires through the windshield to eliminate the incapacitated target…except.”
She pointed with her tweezers to the bullet wound, “it’s not a close range shot. This was from a distance.”
Athena frowned. “...now that’s interesting, isn’t it? I wonder if we can find any other bullet holes? And I wonder if it ties into the blood that was wiped up.”
Kelso whistled low, and adjusted the sunglasses in her hair again. “yikes. I guess we knew it wasn’t gonna be a cut and dry crash, but…”
"Yikes is right!" Bobby agreed. "It's too bad that all the windows were destroyed– they would have had something to say."
"Wouldn't they just?" Simon agreed. "The entry wound is in the front of the skull, yes?"
"Sure is, Prosecutor Blackquill!"
He touched his chin thoughtfully. "That tells us something in itself, doesn't it. If he was shot while he was driving– perhaps that's why the car swerved."
“Yeah..” Kelso nodded as she knelt down to look at the body with Ema. “I think you’re right, Prosecutor Blackquill. The sudden shot to the head probably caused him to slump, turning the wheel sharply to the side and colliding with the barrier.”
Athena bit her lip.
“So someone was in front of them? And fired the gun from the distance to kill him.” She looked back at the other car “then what about the second car? It collided with the first, right?”
Ema had gone quiet again, working with the tweezers and her small medical kit to extract the bullet from the dead agent’s skull.
Halblicht crossed his arms, and narrowed his eyes with a very cold expression in his face suddenly. "If that's the case, then it's likely the second car is unrelated to the case. A bystander casualty incurred due to the sudden wreck of the agents car."
"An interesting theory, detective," Simon said, considering it. "And a decent one– if not for one problem."
"Sir?"
"If this car belongs to an unrelated bystander– where's the second agent? There were two agents, and two agents are missing."
"Ah. Then perhaps the agents were in two cars after all?
“They could have decided that going separately somehow lowered suspicion?” Kelso suggested, the bullet reappearing and flipping through her fingers once more. “and give the opportunity for, if one was shaken, the other to continue to monitor unsuspected?”
Athena’s nose wrinkled.
“...I don’t know, Agent. I think I’d like to examine the second body and car first. Agent Ash says that it’s almost certain that they took one car. I can’t imagine they’d have the time or inclination to grab a second car if the target was already heading out…right?” She suddenly looked unsure “then again, I’m no espionage expert.”
“I’ve got the bullet.” Ema announced.
"Espionage tactics aside, what can we observe about the bullet, Skye-dono?" Simon asked. He noticed that Halblicht had crossed his arms, and gone quiet again.
Ema held up the ruined slug in her tweezers. “It's a pistol round. Typical handgun 9mm. Damaged from the heat and entry, but we might be able to make out rifling if we sent it in for testing.”
"A pistol round, shot from a distance, in the front of the skull," Simon nodded. "Interesting. Is there anything else significant about the remains at this time?"
“Not really. Fire did its job admirably,” Ema huffed with a frown as she stood. “he was shot by a pistol from the distance in the front of the skull, and then the body was all but destroyed in the fire.”
“Brutal.” Kelso murmured with a shake of her head.
“I think we should get looking at the second body..” Athena said “...especially given the blood on the scene. It’s outside, between the cars…which is interesting.”
"It's very interesting," Simon agreed. "Let's have a look at the second body, and see what conclusions we can draw from it."
Halblicht turned, quietly, suddenly snapping into action again. "I'll be happy to take the body out of the car then, if you'd like, Prosecutor Blackquill."
Simon raised his eyebrows. Why was he offering that?
"I don't see why not. Agent Kelso should only be required to get her shirt so dirty," he drawled. He resolved to watch Halblicht carefully. Surely he wasn't going to tamper with the evidence.
“Well I’m not gonna say no.” Kelso smiled. “...this shirt’s got enough tragedy smeared on it from the first one. If you want a hand, lemme know, sir.”
Athena’s head tilted up, and she seemed to listen very carefully as Halblicht spoke…she even paused in her note taking.
Halblicht slipped his black gloves from his pocket, and onto his hands. "At least I'm in the appropriate color for being covered in ash, hm? Ms. Ema– would you please open the car?"
“You got it, Rob,” Ema nodded as she tightened her own gloves and grabbed the door handle. “On three. One…two…”
She wrenched the door open with the groan of charred and melted metal scraping together.
Halblicht held back as the photo was taken of the car, and then he very carefully looked the body over.
"There seems to be another gunshot wound in this one," he said. "Possibly two. I'll move it now."
“Good, once you get it on the ground I’ll give it the in depth examination.” Ema said, seeming more alive than ever now that she was in her element.
Kelso stood back, flipping the bullet between her fingers again as she asked. “Want me to investigate the interior of the car while you work on that, ma’am?”
As Halblicht gently removed the body, he looked over his shoulder and caught Simon's eye. To his surprise, he noticed Halblicht shake his head very slightly, as if in answer to a question.
Simon frowned, not knowing quite if he was making the right assumption, but–
"Why don't we look together, Agent Kelso? Two heads, as they say, are better than one." He stepped around toward the other side of the car.
“They say that!” Kelso laughed cheerfully, before waving her hand, the bullet vanishing down her sleeve. “If you asked Agent Ash, she’d probably say it’s at least better than just mine, anyway.” she lightly rapped her knuckles on the side of her head. “let’s take a peek.”
Athena tilted her head, and her brow furrowed as she listened to the conversation. She glanced back. “Actually, there was something I wanted to ask Agent Ash about the cars…”
"What was that, Ms. Cykes?" Halblicht asked as he lay the body down on the pavement next to the other.
“I wanted to ask Agent Ash something about the cars.” She spoke up “...their procurement , specifically. And if there’s any way to track and ID cars used by Interpol agents. I think we can solve the ‘two bodies, two cars’ discrepancy that way.”
As Simon busied himself looking in the car's passenger seat, he thought that that was a very interesting question indeed.
December 25, 8:20 am
When Phoenix, Miles and Kay met up with Gumshoe and with the girls in the hotel dining room, the first thing that happened was a minor change of plans. Trucy invited Kay to go see Klavier and his commercial with them.
Miles looked at Kay with a raised eyebrow. "Well, Ms. Faraday– it's up to you. Admittedly, I think I have enough backup for this investigation if you'd rather."
Indeed, Miles had rarely felt as well backed up as he did with both Phoenix and Gumshoe there.
“If you’re sure, boss.” Kay had said, glancing between them. In the end, the siren call of bothering a rock star all day won out, and she’d agreed to go along with Trucy and Pearl…leaving the trio to do their work.
“I won’t lie, sir.” Gumshoe said, “I kinda appreciate havin’ something to do today.”
"And I'll appreciate having your… unique skills and way of looking at the world, Detective," Miles drawled with amusement. "Enjoy the day, Kay. Make sure to get some pictures."
“You got it, sir!” Kay snapped a salute. “I’ll steal you one of his guitars, alright?”
“Don’t…Don’t say that to us, Miss Kay.” Gumshoe pleaded “I don’t wanna have to testify in court.”
With the pleasantries out of the way, and Phoenix securing multiple promises from Trucy and Pearl that they'd check in throughout the day, the prosecutor, the attorney, and the detective headed out toward the parking lot.
"Nostalgic, in a way, isn't it?" Miles mused.
“Sure is, sir. Reminds me of all them times you and I solved mysteries overseas.” he chuckled richly. “Guess ya still get the itch now and again eh?”
"Can't keep Edgeworth away from a good mystery," Phoenix chuckled.
"Or a bad one." Miles smirked and shook his head. "You know, I'm not sure the three of us have all been on one investigation together like this."
“Nah , every time we managed to get on one of these, Phoenix was off fuckin’ around, sir.”
"Hey, that's not true!" Phoenix complained. "I was not the one 'fucking around' off solving mysteries over seas. Besides, the three of us have been on plenty of investigations together– just not exactly on the same side."
"And thus, not in the same room at the same time, Wright," Miles tutted. "So this is a fairly novel experience."
They strolled outside into the cold air where their breath came out in puffs, and Miles headed toward where he'd been told his rental car for the day would be parked.
Gumshoe laughed, clapping his hands together. “Two she, Phoenix. Ya got a good point.”
He had probably meant to say touche…but the word was very much lost in translation.
Miles was about to speak up to correct him, when he gave pause, looking at the car next to his own. The driver's side window was wide open, and he immediately noticed that it wasn't merely rolled down, but that there were specs of glass littered in the space where it would have rolled into.
"Oh dear. I think someone's car's been robbed."
Gumshoe’s brow furrowed.
“...That ain’t good. That ain’t good at all.” He leaned forward to inspect it with a rub of his chin. ‘We should report it, yeah? “
"Of course we should," Miles said. And they should– but his curiosity was piqued.
Phoenix caught up. "Uh-oh, I know that tone."
“Oh ho ho!” Gumshoe rubbed his hands together. “is it time to meddle, Mr. Edgeworth, sir??”
Edgeworth flushed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Well– as curious as I am to do so, we have more pressing business today. Let's take down the license plate and give the information to the front desk. If something hasn't been done about it by the time we get back…"
Phoenix slapped Edgeworth companionably on the shoulder. "Then we'll indulge your meddling, Edgeworth."
He made a noise and adjusted his cravat. "Quite."

Right, I've given Case 2:1 some time to marinate. Here's what I have so far;
1. It's a good re-introduction!
For those who played the first game, that is. This game came out a year after the first, so players at the time may have been a little rusty with their lawyering between it and Phoenix Wright (they aren't terribly long games!). Giving Phoenix amnesia - tripe as it is - is a great way to mirror a returning players recollection and excitement when they and Nick start getting back into the swing of things.
I got quite a bit in to it and I had just finished the first game earlier this month! Felt good to be back in Nick's shoes, to piece back together that legal badass that took down Manfred and Gant.
2. I like the soundtrack so far!
The Cross-Examination (Moderato) and Announce the Truth themes especially. They're moodier than the prior game's equivalent tracks while keeping the same overall feeling. The former gets my gears turning pretty good still and the latter is just jaw-dropping (as they both should!).
Objection! is interesting. I wouldn't call it my favourite, but it carries a more collected energy to it. It's less excitable, more calculated, perhaps a bit more mature than the "Aha, gotcha!" of the last theme. Not something I'd listen to for too long though.
The Pursuit theme admittedly doesn't hit as hard as before. It almost feels like the previous theme stripped of its gusto. It was suitably panicked when Wellington briefly turned the tables... a Pursuit theme that makes the player nervous is a fun concept.
3. Wellington is a bastard.
He's Wendy Oldbag's ranting in the body of a college frat-boy with a smart-kid complex. It's a miracle when someone can make Frank Sawhit look more charming by comparison.
More than that though, this asshole almost robbed Nick of his entire life - his memories, his expertise as a lawyer, even his contacts got wiped from his phone. It's a good thing it was only temporary amnesia or Nick would have been on the streets years before it was supposed to happen. What a bastard of an antagonist for the first case.
And a satisfying one to beat, too. He may gloat about Nick not knowing who he is, but we know Nick is a person to be proud of and admire. Wellington, meanwhile, actively has to hide himself under layers of ego - there's nothing worth defending underneath all the smarm and shit-talking (much unlike our client Maggey). Phoenix regaining his memory in order to take him out was very cathartic to see.
And that about wraps up my initial thoughts! Next case recounts Maya's return to the group and introduces Pearl Fey (and Franziska, no doubt), so I'm fairly excited!
Tchüss! (^-^)

Phoenix meets Raymond
One more piece of brain rot I wanted to put down before retiring for the night was the idea of Gregory having put down a note for Raymond in case anything ever happened, since they’re lawyers and in their line of profession, anything could happen. Writing that if he were to pass, and Raymond could not adopt or would not adopt Miles for any reason, to please keep in contact with his friends in school. (Put the rest underneath as it’s a long read.)
Raymond loses his chance at custody for Miles as he was too young and with the death of his boss before he passed the bar himself, he essentially had an unstable career, unlike Manfred who was the best prosecutor around and can afford to meet Miles’ needs and more. So Raymond, after a bit of dealing with the funeral and taking over the business, calls and asks to meet with both Phoenix and Larry’s parents. He talks over the situation with the parents first and gets their permission before even thinking of bringing it up to the kids. Of course he keeps the details vague, basically saying that due to a tragedy, Miles had to go away somewhere, and it might be a long time before he comes back. Both Phoenix and Larry are sad about it, but ask to keep in contact in case Miles calls him again, and then Phoenix asks if he could see the Edgeworth Law Offices since Miles would talk so highly of his dad and Phoenix wanted to see where his dad worked, in his mind thinking that one day he’d return to it and Phoenix could surprise him. Ray decides that a couple of visits from him wouldn’t hurt, it would even keep his mind off the hard things at times when he needed to remind himself he needed a break. Then he grows to like having the excitable Phoenix around the office, just as Phoenix grows to like the idea of becoming an attorney, though of course Ray gently reminds him that he’s free to find his own path. Phoenix also knows that Ray takes a lot of jobs outside of the state, but he got a “job” as a teen helping to clean the office while Raymond was out, Ray keeping the cases and such all locked just in case. Phoenix still goes to the Ivy University, starting his course in theater, but when he notices Ray starting to go quiet even when they hang out, Ray decides to tell Phoenix since he figured he’d read the news eventually. From there, things merge back to the canon story, but with little changes here and there, such as Phoenix still joining Mia Fey as her understudy but also getting tips from Ray where he can. Can even imagine Ray surprising Phoenix with a visit in the detention center either before Phoenix meets with Maya or when he’s put in there himself. The most surprising is one case, Miles notices Ray in the stands of the court when he’s on trial. He’s tense, but Ray just stays by himself but Phoenix manages to get them to talk a bit in the defendant lobby. Even though he knows Miles wouldn’t kill, he still asks him why he chose to go with Manfred in the end. From there after the case, Ray stays away for a bit to cool his emotions down and to keep up his own work. He of course answers the phone whenever Phoenix calls if it’s not too distracting to give moral support. He may even pop over to give a helping hand, though doesn’t carry the cases for Phoenix. One part that I would like to see in particular is Ray seeing Edgeworth act as defense in place of Phoenix. It’s more a surprise than anything, but once he overhears what happened to Phoenix he understands... But is still hurt and a bit cross as it just goes to show that Miles would have been a great defense attorney if only he hadn’t betrayed the Edgeworth name and followed after Von Karma. During Investigations 2, Ray teases Miles here and there about Phoenix, not outright saying his name, but just giving advice of “What would your friend think?” “You remind me of another rascal that would help on my more mundane cases.” though smiles knowingly the more Miles gets flustered over it but doesn’t push it. Of course later on, he keeps in touch with both of the boys, but he has his own cases to follow and solve. But he lets them know he has both of their backs.

Ace Attorney Daemons - Villains
Animal species and reasoning behind each choice under the cut, as well as links to other groups of characters!
Manfred von Karma - African crowned eagle. I talked about this in the prosecutors post, but I think eagles would probably be the expected daemon for the von Karma family. And this one takes the cake. The crowned eagle is widely considered the world’s strongest eagle/most dangerous bird of prey. It’s one of the largest eagle species as well, and has a distinctive crown of feathers on top of its head that can flare up slightly. (Franziska’s harpy eagle daemon takes after it in those details.) It is a fairly passive hunter, preferring to sit and watch/listen for prey. It’s good at hunting on the ground and very maneuverable through trees. All of this feeds into Manfred’s skill as prosecution, as well as his image of himself as the picture of perfection. Another good detail for that in particular is that they tend to be rather loud birds - just like he brags about himself all the time. But, funnily enough, despite being more of an ambush predator, crowned eagles can be a ‘rather nervous species’. They tend to get restless and aggressive. Fits well with his complete loss of composure over losing his win record, I think. They are very intelligent but do not like working with people at all - again, fits beautifully. They have usually two eggs, and only one lives. The females (which his daemon would be) take care of their chicks for an unusually long time. Normally I’d interpret that as more caring in the person, but in this case it just reads controlling.
Damon Gant - Saltwater crocodile. With his love of swimming, Gant had to have a daemon at home in the water. All crocodiles are powerful predators, but saltwater crocs are not only bigger than most other crocs (females usually 8-10 feet long and 168-227 lbs), but also more solitary. They're more territorial than other kinds. Crocodiles are cold-blooded, which has connotations in speech that do line up with how ruthless Gant can easily be. It also means that this species spends most of its time pretty lethargic, floating along in currents to travel. They’re still more active than a lot of species of croc, and spend less time on land except when basking, sometimes at sea for weeks. Gant manipulated the system to place himself in a position of utmost authority, where he could just ‘bask’ or ‘drift’ and let things carry along the path he chose, but he didn’t hesitate to act when his control was threatened. Saltwater crocodiles are willing to eat just about anything, and are quite aggressive, with the strongest bite of any living animal. But, like other crocs, their muscles for opening their jaws are relatively weak and can be held shut relatively easily. I think there’s something to be said for the fact that Gant has trouble letting things go. And of course the aggression can match too. A final detail that swayed me towards a crocodile early on is the phrase “a crocodile grin,” meaning a friendly or jovial front masking a predatory nature. That’s peak Gant, right there.
Matt Engarde - Orchid mantis. Insects are often the deadliest hunters, after all. I think it’s a necessity for Matt’s daemon to fully show his “split” nature, to keep up the front of being sweet and harmless just like he does. So, it looks like a pretty flower! Orchid mantis can even change color to match their environment - not to a hugely detailed level, and not super fast, but it’s still a neat ability that can match his acting. This species of mantis hunts by finding a good spot and waiting to attract its prey to it, sometimes swaying gently to catch the eye. I think Matt is one of the coldest villains in the series, and this more deliberate approach is fitting in that sense. It’s carnivorous and will go after just about anything of the right size, including its own kind.
Morgan Fey - Chimpanzee. The number one trait I was looking for in Morgan’s daemon was territoriality. Chimpanzees have a patriarchal and rather strict hierarchy, which is an equal-opposite match for the matrilineal hierarchy among the Feys. Male chimps are very territorial and can often get into dominance displays or sometimes fights when another chimp has been gone for even a relatively short time. Misty was gone... a long time. Chimps will get into wars with other tribes over territory, as well. All lining up well for someone so obsessed with maintaining what is hers (and gaining more). Male chimps aren’t usually as close to their children as females, but they have been known to practice infanticide on baby chimps that aren’t related to them. Which is pretty much exactly Morgan’s primary goal, so that fits too. Chimpanzees are very intelligent and communicative. While not so much the latter necessarily, Morgan does come up with some pretty convoluted plans and manages to maintain her cool most of the time. Overall, I think a male chimp is a pretty good match for her.
Kristoph Gavin - Coastal taipan. The ‘Coolest Defense in the West’ would of course want to be a coldblooded animal. I actually initially didn’t think he fit as a snake though, because despite his control most of the time, he does tend to get very emotional and lash out in more of a panic. His crimes aren’t necessarily super meditated at the time so much as he overthinks and obsesses about them after the fact. But then I decided that can work, actually. Most people can’t interpret snake body language well, so they look more ‘calm’ or unreadable. This particular species is extremely venomous. It hunts mammalian prey, holding very still before lashing out quickly with one or several bites. Then it retreats and allows its prey to stagger away, waiting until it is dying to follow it down. That struck a chord with me, since Kristoph likes to set his enemies up and wait for them to bring about their own fall (even if they... don’t end up doing that). The coastal taipan stays out of a straightforward fight, just like Kristoph wouldn’t openly admit to hating Phoenix for seven years. The other main reason I chose this snake is that it’s regarded as the most dangerous in Australia because it is so nervous and aggressive around humans. It doesn’t tend to waste much time warning people who have gotten close, instead lashing out to bite before escaping. It’s so fast, it can sometimes deliver several bites before the person even sees it. I think that fits really well with Kristoph’s tendency to lash out and get paranoid.

Turnabout Reunion, because I need to see Pearl's antics with Phoenix... and meet Franny
Lotta: did you get taller from the last time I seen ya???
Phoenix: please, you sound like my aunt
(+100 stars for character interaction and +10 stars for adding a member to the mysterious Wright family tree)
DR GRAY WHY ARE YOU SHOWING OFF THAT YOU HAVE A GUN. YOURE NOT IN AMERICA WHERE BEING STRAPPED IS A NORMAL THING. (and Lotta is right, an evil spirit wouldnt care about a gun, you would just end up killing Maya. Wait, Phoenix, you should say something to Morgan. A clearly unstable man is about to do a channeling with your friend and he just showed you he has a gun on him.)
Lotta: MY MAMA SAID I WAS BORN SPEAKING
Reminds me of the line "You think I came out the pussy drawing Mozart???". +100 stars for a great line.
Lotta: hang on there, spiky...
Whoever wrote the dialog for Lotta this episode deserves an award. +100 stars to that writer
Phoenix needed Lotta's help breaking down the door. -10 stars for Phoenix not breaking it down himself like the battering ram he is in the game.
Gumshoe: CALM DOWN EVERYBODY, ITS THE COPS
+100 stars to Bryan Massey for that incredible line delivery.
Phoenix: it's like hes the only detective in the world...
+100 stars for dropping that shade
For once Lotta is useful without being obnoxious first. Skipping all the running around finding news articles and all that. Leaves us room for good one liners, like: "I guess you got a pretty big pair on ya after all" +1,000 for that single line.
Tumblr media
WHAT EVEN IS THIS ANIMATION???? +1 MILLION STARS FOR MAKING ME LAUGH SO HARD I CHOKED
'Take care of Pearls'. Why isnt she calling her Pearly???
'DONT HATE ME I HAD TO ARREST HER' D'aw, Gumshoe is the best
So I guess at this point Manfred Von Karma is still alive? They are referring to him in the present tense and saying hes still in prison. +10 stars for giving potential to see more of him (but probably not)

ILL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL ILL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL ILL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL ILL SWALLOW YOUR SOUL
I find it so strange that Franziska is from America in the Japanese and Anime versions. I mean, what about America screams "we'll allow a teenaged girl become a prosecutor and also let her carry around a weapon"? Usually Anime likes to portray Americans as loud and obnoxi- oh wait...
Franziska: oh yeah, in America I'm totally allowed to have a whip in court. I should be allowed to do that here.
Judge: welp, if you're allowed to do that in america...
Phoenix/Prij: BULLSHIT
(If you dont know who Prij is, check out Save Data Team's let's play series "Ace Attorney with an Actual Lawyer")
So in the Anime people do notice when Mia is being channeled, but most people brush it off or think they were imagining things. Also, Maya immediately calls out to Mia!!!
I adore when characters imitate other characters since they all have such unique ways of talking. Like, Lotta imitating Morgans refined speech was fucking hilarious.
Omg the second closing animation is fucking adorable. The four cutest characters in the whole series together! I even adore polly because I love birds... even though it makes me sad (part of my tragic backstory)
Second part to this to come soon!

May I raise you this crossover AU: Trollhunters Wizards and Ace Attorney. I sometimes think about how Apollo would be Douxie, Manfred would be someone similar to Merlin, Mia and Phoenix would be Jim and Claire (in a mentor type of way) , idk where the rest of Ace gang would be in this AU or vise versa
Hi, Anon! Bet you thought I'd forgotten about this - well I didn't! I've just been waiting for the opportune moment! ;)
I had some ideas originally for who would be who and what in an AU like this, back when I first got this ask, but as time passed, I realized something very, very important:
Tales of Arcadia and the localization of Ace Attorney both take place in Southern California.
Guys.
Guys.
Fusion universe!!!
Like, maybe the only changes to the AA crew is that Trucy actually has the potential to be a real wizard, and- ohhhhh~ maybe Maya knows Zoe and Douxie's group, because the parallels between spirit mediums and the magical community in this- what if the Feys just know about trolls and wizards and stuff and vice versa because that would make so much sense but you're literally not allowed to tell outsiders-!!!
Oh! Oh, and Phoenix gets pulled into all this because he's carrying around the magatama, which is at least noticeably magical (and also I high-key love and headcanon the idea that he overused it and accidentally awoke some spiritual power within himself, just enough that he can keep his magatama powered on his own now and turn the glow on and off). So some member of Team Trollhunters or their allies goes to Los Angeles at some point because, let's be real, this town's gonna need a lawyer at some point, it just will, and, wouldn't you know it, there's Phoenix, giving off a low magical reading and with his much more overtly magical daughter! Or... omg, what if this is what he was getting up to during the seven-year time gap?!? And that's why he's so tired and not more on top of nailing Kristoph to the wall, he's been busy helping sort out potential laws and legal stuff over in Arcadia Oaks??? There are so many possibilities for this as a crossover and I cannot choose which one I like best!!!
Though, no matter how it happens, it's a legal requirement that Phoenix has no idea what's going on until he's confronted with actual, literal trolls, prior to that he thought it was like internet haters or something.
Thanks for the ask!

Ways that various assorted people in the Bullshit Defense AU refer to von Karma:
“VK”, or “That Scary Old Bastard”: Ray. Ray was 18-19 when he ever knew von Karma, not yet a lawyer, still eating paper all the damn time, he was a kid, and von Karma was the scariest to him. Is he misremembering some of his intimidation factor? Undoubtedly. Does he care to correct these potential misconceptions? No. He’s got nothing to say to von Karma beyond “I kinda mentored your daughter and accidentally taught her to eat paper” and that’s just like….not worth the hassle of going in to prison to see him.
“MFVK”: Phoenix, Larry. Stands for “ManFred Von Karma”, for the first year or so after Franziska was adopted, to refer to him without her knowing they were talking about her dad. This was abandoned when Franziska came to understand both English and letters well enough to know what they were saying. It sees a revival later in middle school when Larry learns what swears are and they decree it to mean “MotherFucking Von Karma”. It’s an injoke that lives on between them and Franziska.
Not even dignifying the man with a mention: Miles. Von Karma is not just dead to him; he might as well never have existed. Miles will never mention him, unless one of two people bring up the subject: Gregory, or Franziska. He’ll shut down the topic even if Ray or Mia tries to talk to him about it. And Franziska no longer discusses von Karma with Miles past when she’s 18 or so; they’ve said what there is to say, screaming or discussing calmly and everything in between, and the legacy of DL-6 and IS-7 are things they have chosen to grapple with on their own past that point.
“Fredman”: Phoenix. Generally used when he and Miles were in their early teens and Phoenix needed to mention him but wanted to soften the blow of having to mention that bastard in front of Miles, who still really really cannot do elevators and earthquakes at this point.
“Fredman von Bastard”: Also Phoenix. The version of above that he uses into adulthood, and he’s nearly gotten Miles to crack a smile with it once or twice. It has a better ring to it than any of the things that Phoenix has ever called Kristoph.
“Fredman”, again: Maya. She first says this entirely independently of Phoenix’s joke and when she finds out that Phoenix uses it, takes this to mean that they are on the same wavelength and need to continue to be Best Friends. She is correct, of course. She also uses this to refer to him even when talking to people outside of the family, i.e. her attempts at convincing Nahyuta that it is his Real Actual Name. She’s joking, of course: she knows his real name is Fredman Motherfucking von Bastard.
His actual fucking name: Gregory, Mia. Gregory has not and will not ever forgive von Karma, per se, but he doesn’t nurse that bitter grudge and have it stay an open wound the way Miles does. A lot of that is for Franziska’s sake, in that he’s trying to make this situation as normal as it could possibly ever be, and also he’s an adult and he will deal with this in a controlled rational way. Mia likewise is an adult, and this is childish, and no she’s never laughed whenever Lana has referred to Gant with similar epithets. She’s an adult.
“My father”: Franziska. Tone, inflection, and context can almost always make it clear whether she is referring to him, or Gregory. (When, after the verdict is laid down, Phoenix freed and Kristoph in jail, she spits at Phoenix, “My father would be proud of you”, there is no question who she means.)
“Papa”: Franziska, talking to Trucy. Perhaps the one thing she remembers from before is that she called him “Papa”, and Trucy, more than anyone, needs to know that she is not the only one with a complicated situation of two fathers very much at odds with each other, a family built on a foundational hurt. (Trucy did not know, when she deemed Miles “Papa”, that this is what Franziska called her father; but Miles does not know, ever, that this is what Franziska called her father.)
“Papa”: Franziska, talking to him. This name is the one tie she has to before, one connection she can always carry to the man who gave her her name. She does not know how to feel about him; she perhaps will never know. He ruined lives, forced wrongful convictions, for twenty-five years; she sits with Miles if an earthquake woke them at night and knows that this is the fault of her father; she knows that their father would not be there if her father had his way. But in his cruelty he gave her this life that she cannot imagine otherwise -- he gave her her father, her brother, and Phoenix, and through Phonix, Maya and Mia and Ema and so many others. She owes this family she has to him, and she knows that is the opposite of his intention. She calls him “Papa”, and when she speaks of Gregory calls him “my father”, and she watches the sneer twist across his face, wondering if he had the same sneer when he picked up that gun. She still can’t bring herself to hate him.
