[INTERVIEW] Why Wonho Prefers to Keep His Beauty Routine Minimal

K-pop idol Wonho talks to Allure via Zoom about his new EP, Facade, and explains why his beauty and style habits are as simple and timeless as ever.

The day before I hop onto a Zoom call with Wonho, I'm watching a video on his workout routine with my mouth slightly agape. It's as if with each passing year, the dude gets increasingly shredded. It seems like a nearly impossible feat, but somehow Wonho makes it happen.

In my mind, the same can be said about his burgeoning solo music career, which bloomed out of unfortunate circumstances after he had already found major success as a member of Monsta X (after three years of hardcore pre-debut training, no less). Years later, after his initial debut, he's defining his own destiny as a soloist through raw lyrics and performances one might not necessarily expect from a typical K-pop idol. (I mean, have you heard the lyrics for "Losing You?")

Take a gander at his Instagram and you'll find rows of casual photos — amongst a few promotional photos and thirst traps…I mean, shirtless snaps of his workout progress — showcasing his bare face (or what appears to be him wearing very minimal makeup, if any) and wearing comfortable clothes. As one commenter says, "Man's just serving us with the "boyfriend" photos huh." (She has a point there.) It's a far cry, one might say, from his days as an idol group member, when he was constantly zhuzhed up with copper eye shadow and bold graphic liner.

But then again, Wonho is such a captivating performer and dancer that it's no surprise he also doesn't feel the need to go all-out on makeup. As long as he has clean-looking base makeup and foundation that evens out his skin tone, his glam team can take flashy, heavy eye makeup out of the equation. In his daily life, he forgoes the base makeup all together but does draw in his brows to frame his face occasionally. As far as I've noticed from the K-pop idols I've interviewed or read about, they tend to go easy on makeup when not on the clock, so they can give their complexions some much-needed breathing time.

Day 8 in Quarantine

Daily Chat Messages with Monsta x feat Minhyuk needs help and Reader could have thought of so many things to help him with but she had to decide to be extra - she was nervous ok? She was really under pressure. She will kill Minhyuk for sure. Breasts.

Her feet tapped on the cold ground as she made her way out of her room. Sighing, she realized she forgot to put her cardigan on, which was laying on her bed. Since she wanted to get this over with she ignored it. Huffing out annoyed and she opened her door.

“What’s wrong?” Hyungwon asked her almost walking against her as she stumbled out her room. Her eyes followed him as he walked past her, making sure he won’t suspect anything.

“Nothing, I need to pee?”

“Aha.. You look pretty btw.” he spoke and disappeared into his room. Her face turned into a very confused frown as she stared at his door.

Turning her face back to the other side, she zoned back as she walked towards the living room. Her feet tapping annoyingly on the floor when she saw Minhyuk standing at the other side of the hall. The girls hair were a tiny bit visible at the door. Dark brown with a light purple shimmer.. just like Minhyuks. He waved his hand towards her, gesturing her to hurry up. Annoyingly, she flipped her finger towards him, earning a small giggle from the girl as she proceeded to walk towards the living room. Entering the room Kihyun looked up from his phone smiling at her.

“What’s up. What did you want?” He spoke, Wonho now looking at her as well, smiling. She noticed Changkyun sprawled out in the couch next to them, looking directly and focused on the tv. Great she thought. Another one she would have to distract. Her head was working. Thinking of ways to help Minhyuk out. Quick thought of her - Why am I even helping him? He really has to make this up for me - Now, what is the best way to distract these three? She wanted them to come to her room and just tell them that she saw a spider, but surely Wonho would have never stepped a foot inside her room if that was the case. Now, second plan was just her screaming? So Minhyuk could run her out but they would still have the chance to look out to the floor and catch him. Okay, so she has to turn their heads away from the door which is leading to the hall. What on earth am I going to do now.. she tought.

“(Y/N)?” Wonho said calmly.

“Uh.. yeah I.. uhm” she sighed loudly. Minhyuk has a lot to make up for. She had to think of giving a sign to Minhyuk that as soon as her plan worked he could just smuggle her out.

She walked on the other side of the couch, now standing opposite of the door to the floor. She saw a mop of blonde hair right at the door but immediately looked back down to Wonho and Kihyun who looked absolutely confused and a little worried about your behavior.

“I talked to Minhyuk about something” she sighed, saying his name in a louder tone for him to realize that it’s his sign to get ready. She looked towards the door now, seeing him peeking at her as he eyes darted back to Wonho, Changkyun and Kihyun.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this..” she whispered nearly for her ears to hear as her fingers gripped the hem of her top.

“Minhyuk said they don’t look even” she almost yelled, her face now feeling hot and looking as red as a tomato.

“What do yo- oh my god” Kihyun froze as he looked at her. Wonhos mouth wide open at her appearance. Her fingers gripped the hem of her top as it was lifted up and exposed her breasts to all of them.

“What the fuck” Changkyun spoke letting his phone fall out of his hand. The loud yell of Minhyuks name was his sign to snuggle his girl out when his glimps shot towards (Y/N) and eyes widened. He stood at the doorway, shocked at what has happened.

Her face turned still red, and feeling like she has a fever from the burning sensation on her face as she just waiting for Minhyuk to finally take that stupid girl and bring her out of the dorm before anyone will see.

“I- what ar” Wonho started when a voice came from the hall.

“Minhyuk? Who is that?” Her eyes widened the moment she heard Jooheons loud voice echoing through the walls. Minhyuks face instantly turned to Jooheon who was accompanied by Shownu.

“Shit..” Minhyuk whispered just audible for him to hear. (Y/N)s grip loosened on her top, pushing it down as fast as possible, still dark red cheeks from her exposing herself.

“Minhyuk for fucks sake. THIS WAS YOUR CHANCE TO FUCKING RUN” she screamed, stomping on her feet.

“Now I exposed myself for NOTHING”

“Who- what is going on? Who are you? Why is she here?” Shownus voice echoed through the walls making Minhyuk hide behind his hands.

“I think I’ll leave..” the drown haired girl said bowing down a few times before leaving the dorm with a loud bang of the door.

Everyone was quite for a moment. (Y/N) shifted from one leg to the other as she looked around the room at the boys expression.

“You have nice tits, that’s for sure” Changkyun bluntly said, winking at her. She grabbed the water bottle on the table and threw it against his head, earning a loud Ouch from him.

“I’m going back to my room. And you guys” she looked around pointing her finger towards Changkyun, Wonho and Kihyun.

“You just completely forget and ignore what just happened seconds ago. Capito?” They nodded, still slightly confused as to what exactly happened and why they have all seen her expose her tits.

Great - she thought while walking past them and back into her room.

Minhyuk took the opportunity and slowly walked back into his room, closing the door and just pretend that nothing too suspicious just happened.

“What’s up?” Hyungwon spoke up walking to the living room, missing Minhyuk and (Y/N). Shownu walked towards the couch and plumped down, a huff escaping his lips as he relaxed.

“I think Minhyuk was sneaking a girl in and (Y/N) showed us her tits” Jooheon exposed, grinning at Changkyun who started laughing.

“Wow.. so nothing special I guess” Hyungwon shrugged his shoulders and opened the fridge in search for food.

[ARTICLE] Monsta X Pushes Against Boundaries in ALL ABOUT LUV, K-Pop's First All-English Album in a Decade

The members of K-pop group Monsta X entered the interview room as though it were the set of a music video: fully hair-and-makeup-ready, some wearing clothes identical to the attire they wore in the video for one of their latest releases, “Middle of the Night.” Kihyun donned a checkered coat with bright yellow stripes and a green collar, Minhyuk a light brown coat with a dark tiger print. The group had just completed a Q&A on Facebook Live, after more than a week of non-stop interviews and meet-and-greets on both coasts of the U.S. The frenetic pace was par for the course for a K-pop act promoting a new album, though in this case, the group from South Korea had just released something a bit different: its first all-English album, ALL ABOUT LUV.

ALL ABOUT LUV is the first all-English album released by a K-pop group in more than a decade — the last one was from trio JYJ in 2010. The new album quickly accomplished an impressive feat, ranking fifth on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making Monsta X only the third K-pop group, after BTS and SuperM, to break the top 10. Members Shownu, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Joohoney, I.M and Wonho — who left the group near the end of last year — participated in the recording of the album, whose 11 tracks are uncharacteristically sensual and seductive for a K-pop act. A few days after the release, five of the six members of Monsta X sat down with TIME to discuss, at times via a translator, ALL ABOUT LUV, and the experience of both singing in English and speaking more frankly about what happens in the bedroom. (Rapper Joohoney is on a break, taking time to focus on his mental health due to anxiety, but will return for the group’s North American tour beginning in June.)

In the nearly five years since the group was formed in the reality competition show No.Mercy in 2015, Monsta X has carved a space in K-pop with EDM- and hip hop-heavy tracks paired with aggressive choreography. In 2019, the act began to shift gears in its sound. While continuing to release Korean albums with the same explosive energy, Monsta X dropped a number of tracks recorded in English, with a sleeker, smoother vibe. The rollout of these English-language songs led up to the release of ALL ABOUT LUV, which dropped on Valentine’s Day to the warm embrace of “Monbebes” — the name for the group’s fans, derived from the French term for “my baby.”

A new language introduces a new mode of expression

The group began working on ALL ABOUT LUV back in 2018, when they recorded “Besides U” featuring Pitbull, though “Who Do U Love?,” a collaboration with French Montana, would be the album’s first single. “At that time it was really difficult to record,” Kihyun, the main vocalist whose honeyed falsetto is a standout in the new album, tells TIME of working in English. “But it’s really comfortable now, every song.” A combination of speaking more English during stateside events, covering American pop songs — such as Bruno Mars’ “Versace on the Floor,” performed on a Korean television show in 2018 — and receiving help from youngest member I.M, who has lived in Boston and is fluent, has gradually increased the artists’ comfort working in the language.

Releasing an English album doesn’t just mean the words sound different. Vocalist Minhyuk describes a more technical difference in singing the two languages, which can lead to increased expressiveness. “When you speak Korean, there are lots of words that if you pronounce that word, your mouth is closed and it’s not really that smooth — it can sound a bit intense,” he says. “But when you are speaking English words, it goes with the flow. Word and word connects.” Minhyuk says the more flexible pronunciation helps him “give more emotions” to the English words. This can be heard, for instance, as he tenderly delivers the line, “I only feel alive when I don’t feel safe” from the new track “Misbehave.”

A laid-back, gentler approach to choreography

The emotions expressed in the new album, and the dances that accompany the songs, also mark a change from those of Monsta X’s past tracks. The group’s Korean music is known for its intensity — the latest title tracks “Follow” and “Alligator” are EDM-infused anthems whose choreography features fast-paced stomps, kicks and punches. In contrast, the numbers on ALL ABOUT LUV, as the album’s name suggests, share a laid-back mood expressed by soft and fluid dance moves. The performance for the new song “Middle of the Night” is filled with hip swaying, finger snapping and caressing of the microphone stand.

“In ALL ABOUT LUV, the whole album vibe is very moody and chill,” says leader Shownu, who is also the main dancer and has participated heavily in the group’s choreography. “We just wanted to match the dance moves with the songs.” The members contributed to shaping the routines of the new tracks. Shownu points to “Middle of the Night”: at the line, “we’re kissing in the car underneath of the night,” the idols tilt their microphone stands sideways and lean down as if to kiss them.

“Our Korean album performance and our ‘Middle of the Night’ performance are different types of sexy,” Minhyuk explains. “Korean album is…” he pauses as rapper I.M jumps in — “strong sexy.” “Yeah, strong and powerful,” Minhyuk agrees. Meanwhile, “Middle of the Night” has a “gentle” type of sexiness, Kihyun says.

‘Honest things happen on the bed’

But the sex appeal doesn’t only stem from the choreography. Throughout the album, lyrics making sexual references carry Monsta X into a beyond-PG-13, but not-quite-R-rated realm to which few K-pop acts have ventured.

In the track “Misbehave,” the chorus goes, “Love it when we mess this up, every time we argue, straight into the bedroom.” When asked about these lyrics, I.M says, “When you are loving somebody you need to be honest, and honest things happen on the bed.”

“What?!” Kihyun exclaims. “B-E-D? B-E-D?” Minhyuk asks, spelling out the word. “It’s about your imagination,” I.M responds, offering a laundry list of chaste activities. “We can just sleep, or just yawn…”

“Watch Netflix on bed,” vocalist Hyungwon, who has been mostly quiet up until now, chimes in. “Yeah, everyone has their own time on their bed,” I.M says. Kihyun fans himself. “Whew, I’m sweating!”

“Using the straightforward words, I thought it was very erotic,” Shownu says, using the Korean word yahada, which is also sometimes translated as “sexual.” “I felt shy,” Minhyuk shares about his recording experience.

Minhyuk reflected on the lyrics of “Love U,” a cheery electro-pop track suggestive of something more physical. The members sing, “I really, really wanna love you / But I can’t say the word I want to / ‘Cause they won’t play it on the radio / But I know you know / What I mean, what I mean.” It’s not hard to guess the word the lyrics suggest.

“When we were recording ‘Love U,’ I thought it was just a song about love,” Minhyuk explains. “But it went in a different direction.”

To be clear, the lyrics in All ABOUT LUV never explicitly mention sex. But compared to previous tracks in Monsta X’s discography — and, on a broader scale, most love songs across K-pop — the words are significantly more sexual. “It’s fine, we’re all adults.” Kihyun says, “and this is an American album.” If it were a Korean album, there would “maybe” be fewer of these references, he says. “The Korean society is more strict to lyrics.”

Pioneering a new sound

While the majority of K-pop tracks have a balanced distribution between singing and rapping — as most idol groups are formed with a mix of singers and rappers — ALL ABOUT LUV has significantly fewer rap verses. I.M and the group’s main rapper Joohoney, who boast some of the most dynamic rap delivery in the industry, tabled that specialty to record vocal-heavy sections. “I think I forgot how to rap by now,” I.M jokes.

“It was so funny,” Kihyun shares about Joohoney’s time in the studio. “Joohoney yelled at me, ‘Hyung, help me! I can’t do this,’” Kihyun says, referencing the Korean term for “older brother.” “The notes were so high to Joohoney, but he did it.” Indeed, Joohoney and I.M displayed their versatility across the album’s melodies, from the ad-libs in “Who Do U Love?” to the sultry introduction in “Middle of the Night.” In blurring the rap-vocal divide, the group is pioneering a new sound for Korean groups releasing music in the U.S.

“The Korean fans liked it because they saw a feeling they had never seen,” Hyungwon says. “The American fans liked it because it was fully in English.” Music from the album is already making its way into spaces where K-pop is rarely heard. On a recent episode of Riverdale, “Who Do U Love?” plays in the background. Elsewhere, fans have recorded hearing ALL ABOUT LUV tracks in stores from an H&M in Turkey to a Hollister in the U.K. When the group announced its North American tour taking place this summer, it became clear that Monsta X is returning to cities in venues much larger than the ones they performed in just a year ago, a testament to their rapid growth.

A few days before the Billboard 200 list was announced, TIME asked Monsta X how they will measure the success of ALL ABOUT LUV. Leader Shownu says he does not want to “get stuck inside of ‘success,’” and his teammate Kihyun offers a simple but emphatic response: “If we and our fans are satisfied with this album, that is good.”

Your eyes fluttered open and you took in your surroundings. It was dark, the only light coming from a small window near the tall ceiling. You could hear drops of water hitting the ground every few seconds and the smell of mold and dried up blood made your stomach turn. The room was large, the walls made of metal. It was empty, aside from a large piece of machinery behind you and chains hanging from the ceiling.

You struggled against the thick rope binding you to the metal chair, but all it did was constrict tighter around you. Where the hell were you? How in the world had this happened? You let your head fall back, closing your eyes.

TWO DAYS EARLIER

You worked as a waitress at the local diner in town. It wasn’t an ideal job, but your co-workers were friendly and the regular customers were kind. Though it frustrated you sometimes, most days you enjoyed the simplicity of it all. It was mundane, boring, but that’s how you liked it.

The bell on the door chimed and you looked up, greeting the two men that entered. “Welcome! Would you like a booth or a table?”

They answered simultaneously, but their answers were different. “Booth.” “Table.” They glared at each other, seeming to have a silent conversation.

“Um, would you like a minute to -”

The tall one rolled his eyes. “A booth, please.”

The shorter one smirked in triumph, sending you a wink. You chuckled, “Right this way! What can I get you to drink?”

“Water,” the tall one answered.

“Coke.”

“Coming right up!” You scurried back to the counter, grabbing their drinks before returning. “I’ll be back in a few minutes to see if you’re ready to order.” You went around the diner, checking on the customers, refilling drinks and cleaning up the empty tables.

The bell chimed again and you looked up with a smile which faltered only slightly. This one was a regular customer, one that visited every day. He was kind enough, very generous with his tips, but something about him unnerved you. Maybe it was how attractive he was, with his porcelain skin and slim but firm body. He wore all black, the clothes tight and hugging him in all the right places. His slicked-back hair was black at the roots, the length white while the tips were blue. Various piercings decorated his ears and his eyes were dark and mysterious, seeming to carry the knowledge of multiple lifetimes.

“You’re staring,” he chuckled, his voice flowing like silk past his plump lips.

You felt your face burn. “I’m really sorry! Would you like your usual seat?”

“No need to apologize,” he smiled. “The usual is fine.”

The counter allowed for several customers to sit there on stools, letting them watch the waitresses run back and forth while also getting an open view of the kitchen. His seat was near the end of the counter, towards the register.

You didn’t even have to ask him what he wanted. He had been coming to the diner for a year straight, never missing a day, and he ordered the exact same thing every time – chicken breast with white rice and a glass of ice water.

You set the glass down and made the mistake of looking into his eyes. They mesmerized you, making it hard to look away. He stirred the water with his straw, eyes never straying from yours. “How has your day been, Y/N?”

“It’s been good,” you cleared your throat, cursing him for having such an effect on you. “What about yours?”

“Better now that I’m talking to you.”

You tilted your head curiously. He seemed… tired. You chewed on your lip, wondering if you should pry.

“Order up!”

You offered him a smile before grabbing the plate and taking it to its owner. You returned to the two men from earlier. “Ready to order?” You noticed the change in their demeanor pretty quickly. They were far more tense than they had been previously, but what had triggered the change?

“I’ll have the house salad, dressing on the side.”

“The double cheeseburger.”

“Sure, it’ll be up soon,” you scribbled the orders down and headed for the counter, passing the paper on to the chef. You turned around, expecting Hoseok’s eyes to be on you like they were every day, but today was different. He was exchanging heated looks with the two men and it was obvious that there was some serious tension between them. Your brow furrowed in confusion. You had never seen the two men before and you were pretty sure they were from out of town, so how could they have beef with him?

Sensing your concern, Hoseok turned his gaze to you, eyes softening as he sent you a smile. “If you keep scrunching your face up like that, it’s going to freeze.”

You pouted at him, folding your arms. “That’s a myth and you know it.”

He raised a brow, looking shocked. “Is it, though?”

You were silent for a moment, wondering if you should ask him about the men. They were pretty well built, you noticed. Were they troublemakers?

A hand reached out, resting on your cheek which grew warm at the contact. His eyes roped you in, leaving you breathless. “Don’t worry, they won’t be a problem.”

“Who are they?”

He was silent for a moment, “Old acquaintances.”

“Oh…” you glanced at them, their hard stares now focused on you.

“I’m afraid I have to leave early,” he stood up, leaning over the counter towards you. “I promise, you will be safe.”

You wanted to question him, but he was already walking out the door. The two men followed moments later and you couldn’t help but feel worried.

5 HOURS EARLIER

You yawned as you pulled the diner door shut, locking it. The autumn air was cold, making you shiver when a breeze blew past you. It was ten-thirty and the streets were empty save for the homeless and those that had passed out from too much alcohol. Most of your nights were spent closing up and then walking home alone. It was something you did thousands of times before and you never once felt any danger, but that night was different. It felt eerie, like you had just stepped into the plot of a horror flick.

You shivered thinking about Jason jumping out from the darkness or Freddy appearing to tell you that you were having a nightmare. It had been a long, stressful week and you convinced yourself that it was the cause of your current sense of doom. You would soon find out how wrong you were.

You caught movement from the corner of your eye and glanced up. A chevy impala was parked on the side of the road, the short man from earlier leaning against the passenger side door. You assumed he was waiting for his friend, so you didn’t spare him any mind, but when he saw you, he pushed away from the car and offered you a charming smile.

“Hey, finally off work?”

You stopped short, brow furrowed. “Um, yeah. Waiting for your friend?”

“I was waiting for you, actually.”

“What?”

“I’m not going to hurt you, I promise. We just need your help.”

“We?” You swallowed hard, stepping back. Something firm was behind you and you squeaked when the taller of the two put a rag over your mouth and nose. You fought as hard as you could but he was too strong and your world soon went black.

PRESENT TIME

You groaned, feeling annoyance rising within you as you thought back. You wiggled again, feeling the ropes rubbing your wrists raw, but you just wanted to be free of your bonds. Why was this even happening? You didn’t understand. He said he needed your help, but how was being tied to a chair in a metal room helping?

Your blood ran cold. ‘Am I… Am I bait??’

The large metal door flung open, making a loud screeching sound as it did so. A small bit of light entered through the door, the dull yellow of a nearby street light.

Hoseok rushed into the building, his dark eyes searching frantically. They landed on you and he made a relieved sound as he rushed over to you, his rough hands grasping your face as he searched for any wounds.

You noticed the various scratches on his skin and his lip was split, dried blood covering the wound.

When he was convinced that you were uninjured, he breathed out and rested his forehead against yours, eyes sliding closed. “You’re alright… You’re alright…”

“Alright?” You scowled at him, wiggling violently. “I was kidnapped and tied to a chair! What the hell is going on?”

“Calm down, darling,” he tried to calm you down but you refused to listen, still struggling against the bonds. “Y/N!” he raised his voice, your name coming out as a demand. The weight of his tone made your body instantly still, eyes widening. He smiled sadly, rubbing your cheek. “This is all my fault.”

“Look,” you took a deep breath to slow your racing heart. “Get me out of here and then we can talk.”

He nodded, standing up to go behind you. You were pretty sure he didn’t have a knife, but he was able to easily cut through the ropes like it was butter. His eyes told you not to question. You stood up, legs shaking from the long period of inactivity.

“I’ll carry you.”

“No, I’m fine,” you responded, holding up your hand to stop him. Stomping your feet a few times, you felt the familiar pickling as they started to wake up. Your nose scrunched in displeasure, making him chuckle. “This is hardly the time, Hoseok.”

He smiled softly, “Its your fault for being so cute.”

“Don’t believe anything he says!”

You quickly turned around, finding the short man standing in the doorway, green eyes narrowed at Hoseok.

“He’s lying to you, telling you what you want to hear.”

Hoseok scoffed, placing his body between you and the man. “That’s rich coming from you, Winchester. Are you not supposed to save people? Kidnapping an innocent person is hardly noble.”

“No one ever said we were noble. We do what we have to stop monsters like you.”

“Even at the expense of others,” he shook his head. “You truly are your father’s child. Determined to destroy everything non-human no matter who gets hurt in the process!”

“Non-human?” you muttered, furrowing your brow.

The man smirked at you. “He’s a demon.”

Your blood ran cold at the thought and you quickly removed your hand from Hoseok’s back, taking a step away. “Y-You’re crazy…”

“Maybe I am,” he shrugged. “Do you want to take that chance?”

“Darling,” Hoseok’s voice was strained as he tried to hold himself back. “I want you to run and not look back.”

“I -”

“Go!” He commanded, glaring at you over his shoulder.

With fear filling you, you quickly turned and ran in the opposite direction, bursting through a side door and into a narrow hallway. You could hear yelling behind you, the sound of metal and cries of pain. It made you run faster, heart pounding against your ribcage. You were terrified and confused, not knowing what to think or believe. You always knew Hoseok was sinful, but a demon? Did they even exist?

The hallway was long and dark, and you ended up tripping more times than you wanted to admit, but you finally came to a set of double doors. You slammed your weight into them, nearly falling out into the night. The air was cold, the autumn air whipping around your body as you ran.

You don’t know how far you had run, but your legs were burning and it hurt to breathe. You entered a park, falling onto the bench. The cold metal seeped through your pants, making you shiver. The adrenaline was wearing off and you felt exhausted, wanting nothing more than to crawl into bed and pretend this was all just a nightmare.

You felt a body next to yours and you cried out on instinct, nearly falling off the bench. A strong arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you back onto the bench.

“It’s okay, darling,” Hoseok’s soft and comforting voice reached your ears. “You’re safe now.”

“Am I?” you breathed out, closing your eyes. “Are you really…?”

“A demon?” he sighed, releasing his grip on you. “Yes, I am.” Your body tensed and he frowned. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“How can I trust you?” you tried to keep your voice strong, but even you could hear the fear lacing it.

“I’ve had plenty of chances to harm you,” he answered, his face blank as he met your gaze. “Not to mention I was nearly sent back to hell trying to rescue you.”

“Why… why did you do that?”

He chuckled, running his hand through his hair. “You really are oblivious, aren’t you?”

“Hey!”

“I want you,” his voice was different now, filled with warmth and love that you had never experienced before. His dark eyes were burning.

“Want me for what?”

“Oh my Lucifer,” Hoseok groaned in frustration before grabbing the back of your neck and slamming his lips against your own. You could feel the cut rubbing against your lip and you caught the metallic taste of blood on your tongue. A groan escaped your throat and he smirked, breaking the kiss. “I want you to be mine, Y/N.”

“Oh.”

“Is that really all you have to say?” he deadpanned.

“I’m sorry, it’s not every day a demon tells you that they want you,” you scowled, folding your arms over your chest and turning away from him. He chuckled, wrapping his arms around you and resting his chin on your shoulder.

His lips found the skin under your ear. “Don’t worry, darling, I don’t disappoint.”

[ARTICLE] MONSTA X's Organic Growth in the Most Dominant Music Market in the World

MONSTA X is an exceptionally talented boy group from South Korea formed by Starship Entertainment on May 14, 2015. The group is made up of Shownu, Wonho Hyungwon, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Jooheon, and I.M.

MONSTA X have not only opened doors for other K-pop acts, but they’ve continually experienced an upwards growth ever since their debut. Their albums have appeared on several leading charts around the world, including Oricon, Billboard, Melon, and many more. MONSTA X have shown time and time again how great their abilities are to connect with their fans (also known as Monbebes) and provide music that not only draws them in, but keeps them wanting more for the future. The fact that MONSTA X can create, produce, and compose music and lyrics that vary from genre and theme whether they are full of energy, power, and bass or slow and sensual only further exemplifies their skillset.

Recently enough, MONSTA X ended up off their We Are Here World Tour which enabled them to travel across several continents from Europe to Asia to both South and North America. In fact, most of these shows were even sold out within minutes even though the vast majority of MONSTA X’s songs are sung and rapped entirely in Korean. Fans coming from all over the world to come and support such a gifted musical group regardless of if they can also speak Korean further justifies the belief by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow that "music is the universal language of mankind" and MONSTA X do a phenomenal job at creating said unity amongst their fans. Nonetheless, their world tour ended on a successful note on August 10th, 2019 in Los Angeles, however, just because their tour ended doesn’t mean that their American promotions ended too.

MONSTA X have experienced an organic growth and rise in popularity within the most dominant music market in the world not only because of their exceptional talents, authentic and relatable personalities, and good looks, but also because of the way they’ve been hustling hard, making powerful connections, and marketing themselves. MONSTA X have been involved in a plethora of different music shows and festivals in America, but they’ve also taken part in many hilarious yet authentic interviews whilst also dominating pop radio. Them getting involved in music shows, having a lot of American interviews to increase their brand reputation and reach more fans, and generating organic radio power have all helped MONSTA X make waves within the American music market.

RADIO

Even though many other K-pop idols have done well in the American music industry, something that tends to be missing is their ability to enter and STAY on the radio and music charts. People may not believe that radio power is important because we all tend to stream the music we want, when we want, but there's more to being a success in America than having streaming parties and personal playlists which is why MONSTA X landing on the radio organically is such a huge deal. MONSTA X made their debut on Billboard's Pop Songs airplay chart back in August of 2019 for the Godsent, jaw-dropping bop, "Who Do U Love?" featuring French Montana. It entered the charts at #39 and is currently at #23 which is an amazing feat seeing as how they're the second-ever Korean group to enter the charts. “Who Do U Love (featuring French Montana)” received 2,850 spins (+171), becoming just the third single from a Korean group to hit the Top 25 (Brian Cantor, Songs By Halsey, MONSTA X, Chris Brown, Camila Cabello Reach Top 25 At Pop Radio).

MONSTA X are doing incredibly well, especially since radio is a HUGE metric. Streaming is important, but radio play is still one of the most POWERFUL music tools to this day. Getting your music on the radio where the general public listens is a major accomplishment because it's not reliant on fandom streaming for success. People who aren't fans will have access to listen to it and the fact that 'Who Do U Love?' is doing well amongst its other competition (especially Native English speaking artists) on pop radio charts is phenomenal. What’s important about having radio power is that if you get an artist exposed on the radio, it helps people KNOW you for the LONGTERM. They don't just think you're a fad or a craze. But, they'll actually recognize you as an ARTIST. MONSTA X's American team (Epic Records and Eshy Gazit's management team) are helping them with exactly that.

Just to get a better understanding of the importance of radio play and organic growth, "Edison Research found that 70% of all US audio consumption (daily average = 4 hrs) happens in the car (versus home, work, etc.) Known for workaholic lifestyles, 77% of Americans drive to work alone, and are presumably looking for some companionship in their morning talk show hosts and singing partners in their favorite artists during their commute" (Jason Joven, Radio in the Streaming Era: Chartmetric’s RadioWave Top 300 Data). This only further proves that MONSTA X are not only trying to reach their fandom, Monbebes, but they're already reaching the general public of music listeners too. They are getting the exposure and shoutout they need to ensure that their songs get played on HEAVY rotation. People won't JUST recognize MONSTA X for having a large fandom, but they'll actually pay attention to their music not because they feel pressured to, but because they can and want to.

Nonetheless, MONSTA X's radio promotions have been beautiful thus far and I'm excited to see more from them. More of them on major playlists, more of them with major interviewers/popular radio hosts, more organic radio play, and so on. They're going to be a major success. It won't be an easy journey at all because we know how fearful people are when it comes to listening to something that they aren't used to, but it will be worth it in the end. Their music isn't just entering the charts for a week and then completely dipping off the face of it. Their music is here to stay and the general public will soon come to know that.

Psyko’s Top 10 Kpop Songs Sung in a Different Language and Released in 2019

This list is based on what I listened to the most. I’m including songs sung by a Kpop group or if they were performed at a korean stage.They also have to be original songs and not songs originally in korean but translated. ( I apologize ahead of time for all the Monsta X)

10. X-Phenomenon by Monsta X

This Japanese hit made for an interesting listen as it changes tempos for the chorus of the song. The killer rap part tops off the very exciting song.

9. Lights by BTS

This was the only BTS music we got in the latter half of this year and it was right up to BTS’s beautiful standard. There’s also a badass metal cover of this song by PelleK on youtube that you should go listen to here.

8. Middle of the Night by Monsta X

This song is so special to me because it was the first song Monsta X released after the announced departure of Wonho. But because this song was recorded before he left, his vocals are still in the songs. I just like to listen to it and think of my sweet baby boy.

7. Drip by Jessi feat. Jay Park

This was the second song released by Jessi under her new label: P Nation. It’s an awesome song to groove to and Jay Park’s rap appearance is one of his best.

6. Bullet to the Heart by Jackson Wang

Jackson’s voice is HEAVENLY. I was drawn to this song from the music video and after seeing how much passion Jackson puts into singing, this song became an instant favorite for me.

5. Moonwalk by WayV

This song is incredible. WayV has really found a good way to compliment all their members’ voices and rap abilities. This song will definitely be part of the legacy WayV will leave as a Chinese/Kpop group

4. Wakey Wakey by NCT 127

This song came out after I bought my tickets to go see NCT 127 in concert so I was in NCT mode. If you give this song a listen, so watch the music video. I watched it over and over again for Jungwoo’s part in the bridge alone.

3. Breakthrough by TWICE

This is probably one of the only Japanese songs of Twice’s that I listened to more than once. This song came hot of the success of FANCY (which was my SOTY) and gives off very similar vibes.

2. LOVE U by Monsta X

When I first heard this song, I was driving to class. I saw there was a new english Monsta X song released and I thought nothing else of it as I put it on. I was no more than 30 seconds in when I immediately began blushing. I ranked this song so high for how overtly sexy it is.

1. WHO DO U LOVE? by Monsta X feat. French Montana

This was my most listened to song of the entire year for one reason: Jooheon. I’ve been a vocalist Jooheon stan ever since they did the part switch version of Fighter and Honey killed Kihyun’s part. So when this song opens up with Lee Jooheon’s beautiful voice, I knew this song was not going to leave me alone. My love for Monsta X outshines my dislike of French Montana

sjfjsjjfd i felt so sad today but when hyungwon came on vlive (feat. shownu, kihyun, changkyun, jooheon, & wonho) (unfortunately minhyuk couldn’t come or get on call :(( i hope he’s doing well..) i felt so much better + i was so happy to see them eating well like ?? like i’m not kidding, i started tearing up and had like happy tears, i felt instantly reassured sjfjsj ahh i love them so much 🥺🥺 and they were imitating jooheon on produce x 101 akdjsjsks they’re so cute :(((( like, just seeing them makes my mood go up?? i didn’t understand everything they said, but i watched happily with so much love in my eyes n admired every part of them like i always do ajdjsjs like i love them so much n i’ve never felt such deep love and affection for someone before.. 🥺🥺 no matter what i say or do, it will never be enough to show how much i love them :((( i love them wifjsjs i can go to sleep happily now 🥺🥺💙 (and they look so good ???? i got happier by x1000 each time the members got on screen sjdjsjs :(((((( i always get happy and excited to see them :(((( and the vlive was like almost 1 hr.. time flies by quick when im with them; wow i’m honestly so in love. holy sjfjsjsj i love monsta x, goodnight 🥺🥺💙

Shownu

After spending some time with you, his Most Significant of significant others, Shownu was headed off to somewhere important (as he is an important man with important, very secret plans). Just before he goes out the door, you call out to him. You didn’t get to say goodbye! He turns around when you call his name. The sunlight illuminates his beautiful, albeit human face and he looks so lovely that you conk the fuck out.

Wonho

It was an average day for Wonho. He looked sexy, but not like he was trying too hard. He'd just come in from working out, still unbelievably....just incredibly.....muscl/.e....HHh. He's...he's just swole as hell all the time. He spotted you working on something unimportant, as it had nothing to do with monbebe, and decided he needed to share his positivity and love for monbebe with you...by giving you a hug! Unknowing of his strength, however, Wonho hugs you Too Hard with...with his.......Large Mosslc.es..h... It would be stupid for you not to pass out in this situation, so you do, in fact, fall unconscious in his Buff, Beefy arms.

Minhyuk

As he is a nice, well-meaning fellow, he decides to bake you a tasty treat in the kitchen. Unfortunately, he is in the running for world's worst cook and, in the midst of his attempt to make you a delicious dessert, a spoon goes flying and lands on the floor by you. You hit your head on the counter when you bend down to grab it, knocking you unconscious. He made you whale shaped cookies (aww!) and left a note that says, “I whale-y like you! Please wake up, I can’t go back to jail!” How cute!

Kihyun

He casually serenades you with a love song because that's just the kind of guy he is. His voice is so stunning that your heart rate sky rockets and you pass out from shock. Saddened by this development, he starts singing a melancholy tune. Wow. Much like an idol's hair when it's been bleached too much, it's both beautiful and sad. 10/10

Hyungwon

You were both in the kitchen — you cooking something, him breathing and looking vaguely unamused, but in like a sexy way — when you asked him to get something off a very high shelf because he is a moderately tall male guy thing and you are definitely a human person. He knocks you out when he brings his long man arms down with the item you requested and his elbow thwacks you across the temple.

Joohoney

In one of his attempts to prove he is The Coolest Rapper (despite everyone's insistence that he already is), Jooheon decides he must Rap The Fastest. He was rapping SO fast, SO darn quick, SO hella...rap..idly? Whatever, it was awesome!!! That is, of course, until he used up all the oxygen in the immediate area and you both passed out. It was still really cool, though.

Changkyun

It had been a long time since you had seen his face (almost two whole hours), so Changkyun decided he needed to do something about that. Without warning, he sends you a selfie. Unsuspectingly, you open your message from him and see his picture. He looks so good, you start hyperventilating. You reply, "I can't breathe skdfjklsdf 😂😂😂," before fainting on the spot. Laughing, Changkyun replies, "Haha, I know, right? 😂"
