I realised that I forgot to post my stash of cherik LJ recs. So here they are:

I've been reading and adding these fics to my list since before the dawn of time. So the descriptions on many of the fics are somewhat wonky. Plus, you know how the kink meme works on LJ *shrugs*. So read them at your own risk.

I'll start with one of my favourites:

Desperate Measures https://temperance-k.livejournal.com/37682.html The inhabitants of Charles' estate (Charles, his conniving younger sister Raven, his adorable but mischievous adopted children, and their live-in handyman Erik) have been growing restless. To keep the children (who range in age from kindergarten to fifth or sixth grade) from destroying everything in sight, Charles comes up with a scavenger hunt of sorts. The objective? To find his "heart" (which is actually a heart-shaped photo of everyone)

It arrived with the day's mail addressed to one "Anon Y. Mouse", which was such an obvious pseudonym his immediate reaction was to wonder which of the students had sent for it. After deciding that there were some things he was better off not knowing, he hastily did a mental sweep of the house to make sure there was no one heading his way and slowly began to flip through the pages.

He's brutally interrogated, tortured and raped until he finally breaks. So they fall into a routine where (dry or wet, doesn't matter to me) nursing becomes their go to for foreplay and for soothing away fear/stress/ upset/angry feelings. But I want it to be a special thing just between them, so obviously not something the children know about; and for them to remain adults throughout (i.e. different from "adult baby")

summary: Wilson is paralyzed from the waist down (or some similar injury, this was inspired by "Fifth Of July" a play RSL was in), becomes very depressed and angry and House has to help him find a reason to go back to work and keep helping people.

House was in a new wheelchair. Low slung with space-age three spoke wheels. “You blew money on a sports wheelchair? How important is it for you to win? Our bets never top five dollars.” “It’s not for me. It’s for you." House shook his head in dismay. "Your choice in wheels is disgusting. You drove a Volvo and now you own the Darth Vadermobile. Your wheelchair should be equipped with a horsewhip, it's so old-fashioned. Get with the program, Wilson.” House slapped the handrims. “This baby is the ‘vette of wheelchairs.” “I’m fine, with the one I h-have.” Wilson faltered. House had argued with him when he made his decision, but stubbornly refused to give in and erred on the side of caution, choosing a sturdier, mundane model. “Too late, this one is custom-built for you.” House passed his friend and moved toward the couch. Stenciled on the back in small letters were, “Beware Monster Trucks!” Right below in a larger font, “THE TUMORNATOR.”

reccer's note: this one features disabled!wilson and i wasn't sure how i was going to feel about it but im really glad i read it anyways! the characterization is brilliant, i can totally imagine canon!wilson behaving like this. the tumornator and wilsonfrared detector were strokes of genius too!

In light of my recent inability to be chill at all about this ship or the movie, I've put together a fic rec list for the perusal of anyone wanting to dip in the waters with me.

I generally kept to one fic per author, but quite a few of these writers have some impressive catalogues of fic; and although I picked one personal fave per author for this list, there are a TON of excellent picks on these authors' pages, so please, please check them out!

A series of one shots following the second film, exploring the lives of John Smith and Pocahontas. Like the film, it is loosely based on historical events.

A retelling of Disney's Pocahontas, now complete. The idea is to see if a serious treatment of the whole story can work. Disclaimer: though some of the characters are my own, most were given their present form by the Disney Corporation.

Notes: This is an EPIC and, if I were to pick, like, a 'Citizen Kane' of P/JS fic, it would be this one. Basically, it's an expansion on the world of the film, and reframes the story a little more realistically. It's got EVERYTHING. It's got a deep study of both leads, complex political maneuvering, John Smith's Pretty People Problems (obsessed with this), gay lil Thomas having a Lot to deal with, Pocahontas being smarter than everyone, and romanceeeeeee. *muah* c'e bella.

Incomplete Fics:

Glory to Glory by pearl037 [ ff.net | Ao3 ]

When John Smith returns to England, Pocahontas is left as the mediator between the settlers and her people. When a bad growing season forces them to cease trading, the new captain will stop at nothing to ensure the survival of his colony. Meanwhile, England prepares for war. Multi-perspective. All rights belong to Disney and history. Part XIII is up!

Notes: There's some wonderful characterization in this, and an excellent exploration of grief that just gets me in the gut. It's more-or-less an alternate sequel, and builds up the setting around both the denizens of Jamestown and John's gang of fugitives (queen behavior).

This is a continuation from a "Pocahontas" fanfiction 'The Burning' published in 1999. He had never dared hope to see her alive and laughing, vibrant and beautiful. T/M

Notes: I'm not sure where the predecessor of this fic is (although I'll continue to try). It's a rare modern AU, with a twist. You can piece together what happened before the fic, and the intensity of the universe it happens in. To keep in line with the setting, Pocahontas has a different name, which can be jarring, but once you get past it the premise is interesting and the story, compelling.

Honorable Mention:

The Magic of Hogwarts by orphan_account [ Ao3 ]

"The wall clock reads fifteen minutes till eleven. The newspapers indicate that today is the first of September. King’s Cross Station is bustling... Here our fairytales begin." Excerpt from Prologue. Betaed by the lovely and amazing Crystal (niuniujiaojiao). Please read the notes at the beginning of this fic. I will eventually update.

Notes: I didn't include any crossovers in the main list, because I hadn't really broken into that set of fic, yet. But I felt this one deserved a spot on the list. It's a wide, wide fic, and includes interpretations of a TON of Disney characters. I included this because the Pocahontas/John Smith subplot absolutely fucking wrecked me, and I needed to share. The last update the fic got threw me in the back of a van and beat me with an aluminum baseball bat. This fic is unfinished as of now, but even if it's never updated again, it's worth a read. Just be sure to read all of the author's notes!

Snowflake Challenge #13 (crosspost from DW)

Snowflake Challenge #13: Make a rec list of fanworks.

I almost invariably rec only completed fics, so this time I thought I'd do a rec list of just WIPs. I'm telling you right now, none of these works have been updated more recently than March 2023. I invite you to enjoy them as they are and to leave feedback that is encouraging but not bullying. ;)

1) If Tomorrow Never Comes by @eau1636. Endeavour Morse/Peter Jakes (Endeavour). A time loop story with wonderful characterization in one of my most favorite rare pairs.

He already knew what the paper’s headlines would be, what the answers to the crossword puzzle were, what date would be printed across the top. He unrolled the paper and there it was, irrefutable in black and white. Monday, February 2, 1967. Morse called the station to say he was ill and wouldn’t be in today. Then he walked over, took the bottle down from the shelf, and set to work. At least the scotch had refilled itself overnight. Small mercies. Once darkness fell that evening, Morse walked to the park. He sat on a bench in the freezing night air, looking up at the stars. He would stay awake all night. He wouldn’t go home, he’d stay right here under the open sky. Whatever it was that was happening, it couldn’t get him here.

2) fidelity, undying by @joycecarolnotes Loki/Mobius (Loki TV series). The deeply evocative scene-setting first chapter of an arranged marriage canon-divergence.

Frigga sighs and strokes his raven hair, perched beside him on the edge of his bed. "While you may not wish to hear it, I believe that your marriage to this Midgardian prince is for the best." Loki scoffs. "Oh do you?" Her own marriage, Frigga says, had been arranged by her father. She did not wish to leave her home, to travel to Asgard and marry the gruff, imposing, one-eyed man who called himself the All-Father. But she peered into her future and saw that she would have two sons, and raise them beside Odin, and that she would love them very much. And so she went. "What of my future," Loki asks, "have you had a look?" Frigga shakes her head. "And would you tell me if you had?" Frigga shakes her head again.

3) i thought you should know, by @odekirk. Howard Hamlin/Chuck McGill (Better Call Saul). The tragedy of Howard and Chuck, of the Hamlins and the McGills, over the decades. Fun fact: odekirk is straight-up the only fic writer who understands these two characters at all.

In the dream, Howard stands on Chuck’s porch and knocks three times on the front door, and tries to call out Chuck’s name. He’s holding something in his arm—one of the lights from the HHM conference room, glowing softly in the dark of night. “Maybe he’s at the grocery store,” Julie says. Yes, of course she’s right. Howard turns around and panics—where is his car? He just parked it right there in front of Chuck’s house. “I don’t have a car,” he laments to Julie. “I don’t know where my car is.” “Maybe it’s inside.” Yes, of course the car is inside. Howard turns around again and the front door is open. He walks in and sees the state of the house. Walls are torn up. Books are scattered all over. Appliances are strewn across the floor, the windows are boarded up, space blankets are hung everywhere. “Where’s your car?” Jimmy asks him. “What did you do?” Howard is frightened. If he can’t find his car, he’ll never be able to drive to the grocery store to get Chuck. He has to talk to Chuck.

Fics that you should read before Arthur comes back: clown edition

Now I know we might all be clowns, and that they're probably playing with us as usual, but honest to God I don't care. I am going to get my hopes up because I have been doing exactly that for the past lord knows how long. So better stay consistent, ok? Better remain true to the cause.

Now here are some post-canon fics that the writers should put into consideration if they know what's good for them.

1. These Ghosts Might Be Mine by @peaceheather. 68K, G.

The only thing I wrote in my bookmarks over this was that it's "the ending we deserved". Pretty sure that sums up exactly what I want to say. It's not just your ordinary time travel fix-it fic, but one that is done with such brilliance that it leaves you marvelling in awe at times. You must do yourself a favour and read for this author if you actually want to get a good understanding of the characters past canon.

2. Seo Gaestlufe/The Soul's Love series by flowerofnettles. 180K, T/E.

I know how hesitant some are when it comes to series, but listen. This one is simply not long enough from how GOOD it is! I rarely read wip fics, (it's now complete) but I genuinely loved living a journey with the author while it was being written, and I felt the amount of love and passion the author spent on it. What a creation, honestly. It's one of the very best out there.

3. I will turn your fear into a handful of dust by @regulusrules. 1K, G.

I am biased, ok? I want my own happy ending for them. I want to see them grow old and weary together. I want them alive. And if what it takes is a 1k drabble of them lying together by the sea, then I'll take it. I'll take it every single time you guys.

4. Albion's last bulwark by Saturne. 92K, E.

You know when there's a halo around a fic that you intensely remember a scene from but never the whole? And the scene alone is more than enough to remind you how good of a fic it is? Yeah. Yeah it's definitely the case here. I vividly feel its effect still. Absolutely planning on rereading soon because of how brilliant it was.

5. And like the cycle of the year, we begin again by @katherynefromphilly. 207K, M.

And lastly, the fandom requirement. The one that we will throw fists for if we don't see a scene or two from. As much as I am always more into canon deviations than accepting the idea of immortality and Arthur rising after millennia, this fic was definitely a pro in trying to make me less in denial. It certainly set the expectations high for any adaptation they might make now, and for good reason.

ARTHUR WILL RISE AGAIN.

maybe it's bc i don't read fanfic as much anymore but it seems harder to find nowadays. oftentimes i'm like ohhh i've read plenty of fics with this theme but i can't find them now bc i hadn't bookmarked them back in the day and the pathways (livejournal del.icio.us ff.net) have grown over now
