Snowflake Challenge #13 (crosspost from DW)
Snowflake Challenge #13: Make a rec list of fanworks.
I almost invariably rec only completed fics, so this time I thought I'd do a rec list of just WIPs. I'm telling you right now, none of these works have been updated more recently than March 2023. I invite you to enjoy them as they are and to leave feedback that is encouraging but not bullying. ;)
1) If Tomorrow Never Comes by @eau1636. Endeavour Morse/Peter Jakes (Endeavour). A time loop story with wonderful characterization in one of my most favorite rare pairs.
He already knew what the paper’s headlines would be, what the answers to the crossword puzzle were, what date would be printed across the top. He unrolled the paper and there it was, irrefutable in black and white. Monday, February 2, 1967. Morse called the station to say he was ill and wouldn’t be in today. Then he walked over, took the bottle down from the shelf, and set to work. At least the scotch had refilled itself overnight. Small mercies. Once darkness fell that evening, Morse walked to the park. He sat on a bench in the freezing night air, looking up at the stars. He would stay awake all night. He wouldn’t go home, he’d stay right here under the open sky. Whatever it was that was happening, it couldn’t get him here.
2) fidelity, undying by @joycecarolnotes Loki/Mobius (Loki TV series). The deeply evocative scene-setting first chapter of an arranged marriage canon-divergence.
Frigga sighs and strokes his raven hair, perched beside him on the edge of his bed. "While you may not wish to hear it, I believe that your marriage to this Midgardian prince is for the best." Loki scoffs. "Oh do you?" Her own marriage, Frigga says, had been arranged by her father. She did not wish to leave her home, to travel to Asgard and marry the gruff, imposing, one-eyed man who called himself the All-Father. But she peered into her future and saw that she would have two sons, and raise them beside Odin, and that she would love them very much. And so she went. "What of my future," Loki asks, "have you had a look?" Frigga shakes her head. "And would you tell me if you had?" Frigga shakes her head again.
3) i thought you should know, by @odekirk. Howard Hamlin/Chuck McGill (Better Call Saul). The tragedy of Howard and Chuck, of the Hamlins and the McGills, over the decades. Fun fact: odekirk is straight-up the only fic writer who understands these two characters at all.
In the dream, Howard stands on Chuck’s porch and knocks three times on the front door, and tries to call out Chuck’s name. He’s holding something in his arm—one of the lights from the HHM conference room, glowing softly in the dark of night. “Maybe he’s at the grocery store,” Julie says. Yes, of course she’s right. Howard turns around and panics—where is his car? He just parked it right there in front of Chuck’s house. “I don’t have a car,” he laments to Julie. “I don’t know where my car is.” “Maybe it’s inside.” Yes, of course the car is inside. Howard turns around again and the front door is open. He walks in and sees the state of the house. Walls are torn up. Books are scattered all over. Appliances are strewn across the floor, the windows are boarded up, space blankets are hung everywhere. “Where’s your car?” Jimmy asks him. “What did you do?” Howard is frightened. If he can’t find his car, he’ll never be able to drive to the grocery store to get Chuck. He has to talk to Chuck.

7-7-7 meme
Tagged by @onlymorelove (well, okay, by default, but you won’t see me passing up an excuse to do one of these). Rules: go to your current WIP (or one of them), go to the seventh page, find the seventh line on it, and share the next seven sentences with us. Then tag seven others to do the same.
I cheated and did two, because I am drowning in WIPs, you guys, even when I narrow it down to just the ones that have more than seven pages of material and clean enough formatting to fit the meme. I’m not proud. Or tired.
From the Star Wars AU (diverging late in TLJ) that only fmajorhell has seen any of so far:
The Ewok chief interrupts Threepio while he’s still translating and chatters at him. He translates her: “‘Leia Organa, you are part of the Bright Tree Tribe, and welcomed as though we had last seen each other at breakfast this morning.’” Chewie roars cheerfully, and Rey says, “Yeah, I liked that 'breakfast’ part too.” Chief Kneesaa orders her scouts to disarm a wide enough area of traps for the visitors to come in. There are a *lot* of traps. Once the break in the perimeter is open, the chief jogs right up to Leia and hugs her legs so enthusiastically that Leia wobbles slightly and has to steady herself on her cane.
And from My Mathematical Mind, the Silicon Valley epic of technoethics and gay romance summed up in this post I made after Season 5:
“If you stay here, and bring your vision to this, we are going to make you so proud. And — if you — if you can’t, then, I know whatever you do next will be awesome and I’ll be your biggest fan. I mean unless you end up like, at the FCC trying to shut us down which would be really ironic, please try not to end up with that happening.” “The FCC is toothless anyway.” “I know, right.” “And — what about —?” Jared gestures between the two of them.
Tagging: you, gentle reader, if you think it would be fun!

Your wintertime guide to LJ Land
First things first: holiday_wishes is back again this year, and it's already bursting with activity! (All wishlist posts are locked, so you'll have to join the comm to see them.)
Under the cut are several more links to wintertime LJ goings-on to keep you busy while you're bundled up inside. I've rounded up three friending frenzies and three fandom challenges to peruse so far; a little something for everyone. And if there's anything else going on on LJ right now that you want to plug, please leave a comment!
[edit for tumblr: these embeds don't work on the tumblr dashboard, naturally, but they're visible if you view it on my blog or just go to the original post.]

meanwhile
In amidst everything else that's been going on, don't miss the occasional good news — like the administration being rebuked by the courts again in their ongoing attempt to discriminate against trans people in the military.
The Ninth Circuit ruling holds that the stay requested by the government “would upend, rather than preserve, the status quo,” which currently allows transgender people to serve in the military.
The Trump administration had sought a stay from the Ninth Circuit while it appealed the April 13 ruling of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington affirming an earlier preliminary injunction and barring implementation of the transgender military ban.
The April 13 ruling rejected the Trump administration’s claim that its “new” plan to ban transgender people from serving openly in the U.S. Armed Services, released March 23, passed muster. Instead, the court found that plan to be a retread of the original ban, not a new policy, threatening the very same constitutional violations.
Furthermore, the court also found that the effort to ban transgender people from military service must meet the most demanding level of scrutiny because it so clearly targets transgender people.
The case is on track to go to trial in April 2019.

Madam Secretary S4E22, "Night Watch"
I keep thinking about doing a whole series of detailed internet yelling about why Madam Secretary is better than The West Wing, but I'd have to go rewatch dozens of episodes of The West Wing for that, and there are so many other things I'd rather do with my time than ever hear Josh Lyman talk to a woman again.

Westworld S2E8, "Kiksuya"
I'm definitely gonna need the whole week to recover from that episode emotionally. Also, here's a beautiful reddit post about the episode from a writer with an Oglala Lakota background.

Snowflake Challenge Day 9: Rec Yourself [Before You Check Yourself]
Day 9 In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you’ve created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. I love to make stuff in some rare-ass canons, so this day is really tailor-made for moi. 1) May I interest you in A Maze of Twisting Passageways, All Different? I wrote this Kentucky Route Zero story for the M/M Rares exchange, and my recipient was happy with it, but it's been seen by almost no one else since KRZ is such a niche game, and the overlap of people who play KRZ and people who read fanfic must be an even smaller niche than that. I have to say this story is one of my favorite things I've done, and it did eat my life for a bit. (I even created a solvable puzzle to embed in it.) 2) Something fun and weird I remembered while poking through my archives trying to figure out what else I should rec: S. & M., a Sam and Max fanmix! Fun fact: At least one of these tracks ("I Want Out of the Circus" by Cracker) was on my hard drive because I got it in someone else's Sam and Max Hit the Road fanmix that I think I downloaded on LiveJournal circa 2006. 3) From obscure to esoteric to the biggest star there is: I made a fanmix for Luke Skywalker last week, it's titled 8, let's listen to it together and process some feelings. Or not process them. I keep listening to this mix, anyway. Also I used that weird spooky "eight, eight" poem from the Tank Girl movie on the cover and I want someone to notice. 4) And a short post-TLJ Leia story, Space. x-posted from my livejournal | comment there

Snowflake Challenge Day 3: Recs
Day 3
In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Unnamed Stars by Lightningwaltz Star Wars (Original Trilogy) This was written for my own very fortunate self as a gift fic in the 2016 mm-rares exchange, and I'll copy-paste from my rec post at the time: Lightningwaltz, a total stranger to me, went and bundled up all my Star Wars soft spots into Unnamed Stars (Luke/Lando, PG-13). You got your great Luke and Lando characterization, your lived-in universe with all kinds of politics and city stuff, Luke’s robot hand that I definitely do not have any kind of a thing about, a really authentic and wonderful connection between these two characters where you can see just how they complement each other. Honestly part of why it took so long to post about my gift is that I really want to say more about it than my current stores of attention span can supply. Just go read it and give my no-longer-secret santa some love! * No Other Exile by queerly_it_is Star Wars (Sequel Trilogy) A post-TFA fic that includes Poe/Finn, but is more centrally a Phasma story. Great characterization of everybody, and I like how it returns to one of the big themes of the new canon, that it's not about where you came from but what you choose to do. And it's a good romp, too. * Golden Ticket by Selden Hannibal (NBC) And now for something considerably different. This story has weird old death magic and an M rating for canon-typical graphic violence, but it's still a lot kinder than canon itself. Abigail Hobbs can raise the dead.
One person from the dead, to be precise.
She brings back Beverly Katz.

Snowflake Challenge Day 4: Wish List
Day 4
In its purest form, fandom is people wanting more out of a story and creating what they want — and what others want. We express our love for media in the form of words, graphics, audio, meta, art, even knitting projects or songs! We gift each other the things we want in exchanges, and we show appreciation to the best of our ability, whether that’s comments or recommendations or notes.
Today, I want us to think about the things that would make us happy, because we deserve them — and read about the things that would make other people happy, because maybe we’re in the perfect spot to grant their wish.
In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see. 1) A global fandom wish, which I've seen on a lot of other people's lists too: In 2018, we should all try to leave more feedback on the things we like! I know, it's always easier said than done. I'm going to have to put some effort into it myself. 2) A little vain wish: It would be super cool if anyone wanted to make art to go with anything I've written (AO3 and miscellany). Or any of these gift stories I've received since I started doing exchanges again, all of which I want to keep in a fancy display case and brag about to visitors. <3 3)I'd love to have more people to talk about Star Wars with! Feel free to join me in this open TLJ spoilers thread whether or not we've ever talked before. I've been eager to have like normal conversations about this movie, but I feel isolated both by Camp It's Perfect Because Rian Supports Our Creepy Hellship and by Camp Disney Bought Uranium From Hillary Clinton To Silence Mark Hamill's Brave Dissent -- so, anyone I didn't alienate yet, come on in and have a nice talk about movies?

here's something else neat
Tumblr media
This was helpfully brought to my desk via one of those emails from the LJ algorithm that none of us ever signed up for but that deliver a surprisingly high ratio of interesting posts from strangers. (I think I met at least one of my mutual LJ friends that way?) It's like the Snowflake Challenge, but for summertime! Hoping I'll manage to do more than one day of this one. :D (Day one is literally organizing your fandom shit like I've been trying to get myself to do for like five years, so maybe??)
