Prompt 126
You know what would be hilarious?
Constantine comes into one of those meetings as he sometimes does every blue moon. Though the proper word would be storms into a meeting and practically slams a whole stack of papers down. “Can someone bloody explain to me why the American-fucking-government is trying to go to war with the fucking Infinite Realms?!”
The Justice League is of course alarmed and confused- and also John weren’t you in Hell?! Yeah, he was, where the fuck do you think he found out about this?
Now if you’ll excuse him he’s going back to the House of Mysteries with his now haunted trench coat. John, John Constantine what the fuck do you mean by that? No don’t just leave, don’t leave this mess just for them- JOHN!

Can You "Accidental Baby Acquisition" Yourself?
Like? Say you have a You... who is NOT You, obviously, but A You in the Multiversal sense... and their childhood suuuuuucked. Just? Truely awful for reasons beyond their control.
Such as the veil NOT being so easily peirced in their reality and humanity a bit more... Reactive(tm) to ectoplasm, due to the lower concentration of it in the Everything of their Universe. Which makes their parents research? Unattainable. Dangerous.
Ultimately fatal to their elder sister.
And then later, them.
Not that they were even the loving if wildly eccentric parents most of the other You's KNOW and have. Due to that very say research and their long-term exposure to their own samples. The Reactivity.
"Pit Rage" as some circles call it.
They weren't themselves. Stopped BEING themselves long before their children ever came into the picture. If they could think clearly, they would BEG for someone to save their children. From them. From their house of horrors. From what they've become.
And well? You exsist outside of Time. In the Zone. Maybe you have a wide and crazy adventure with this grizzled, worn, badass of a You. Figure he's pretty cool. Ask if he needs anything. And he laughs this broken glass in your chest sort of sound and says:
"Not unless you could give me a real childhood."
Like? Dude. Buddy. My buddy dude. Gonna have to explain that one. You can't just drop that and walk away. We Crazy Action Bros Adventure(tm) bonded. You can tell me. And reluctantly... he kinda does.
And... Look. You exsist outside of TIME. Your mentor IS Time. You can TOTALLY do that.
This.
But like? You realize... there wouldn't be TWO of you... right? If you take mini-Bamf out of the timestream at point A... you, big guy, stop existing at every instance of point B and onwards.
Yeah. Yeah, he gets that. Fully consents. His life was full of bad decisions and dramatic bullshit. He wants a real childhood. His sister back. Wants them BOTH out of that house and somewhere safe. If he could do it himself, he would. Call it his fucked up way of healing. Finally facing his trauma. It's haunted him long enough.
.....well then. Now You've got a baby and a fussy toddler. They have superpowers because of course they do. That house was OSHAs waking nightmares and deepest fever dreams. Jazzypants is hungy. And baby You did a stinky.
This is Fine(tm).
You're a King! You can TOTALLY handle this! Teeeeeemporarily. Since it's not like they can stay HERE. The Zone is literally uninhabitable long term for the living. So time to fire up the ol Brain Meats. Gremlin Ideas formulating. Loading... Loading... Loooooooading. Got it!
You kidnapped them.
Brilliant! FRIGHTY! Where's the Trenchcoat Booze Slu-...SLUHeuth. Sleuth! Totally what I was planning to say, Starshines! Don't curse. Cursing Bad~☆
The Detective Of Loose Morales in The Trenchcoat, who's Soul I Own, Frighty! Where's he at?? *Distant muffled answer* Close enough! Time to give him a heart attack! And throw a fight! Can you toss me a nightmare medallion? I need to instill mortal terror! Thaaaanks, Frighty! Also can you change diapers? *affirmative noises* Ancients, you're the best.
Smash cut to John Constantine. Busting up some cult, as you do. When? Oh fuck. The leaders heading for the store room! Not today, fucker! They fight. They struggle. It's Manly and Gritty and dramatic! When?
A terrible CRASH. Some artifact must have activated. What... have you DONE? *dramatic musical sting* swirling green and DEATH radiates out from a pin prick of nothing. A black hole in reverse. The cold oblivion of space, given bones to claw its way free. Eyes that sear in colors too technicolor and hypersaturated to be mortal. Green. Green! GREEN.
Ice and stars and death and a terrible, unspeakable Crown.
Two... two little sprogs. Tiny bits of nothing in a monsters hand. KIDS, wrapped up in something they never should of even had to nightmare about. John's eyes catch on red, red hair. A tiny little headband with butterflies on it. Pressed so close to dark locks, as she wraps herself around her little bits of a sibling.
The other ones dressed up in stars.
Someone SOLD their fuckin KIDS. Or this damned this STOLE them. It doesn't matter. Not now, not to John. Because this bastard isn't keeping them. He slides like breathing into the waves of luck and chance, odds and fate. Is on his feet and drawing attention. Whatever it takes, he's leaving here with those kids.
He laughs and it's not a kind one.
"Oi! A word if you will?"

Imagine the finale for The Winchester’s finally cultivating into a tense and dramatic moment where John and Mary finally confront the mysterious figure who has been haunting them and finally demand answers, music swelling as the man squares his jaw and takes a deep breath ready to explain everything, only for a grumpy looking man in a trenchcoat to literally appear out of thin air and proceed to drag mystery man away by the ear muttering about the consequences of meddling with the timeline.

Thisday and John Constantine!
@the-haunted-office
John thought the building had been empty, say for him and what now was laying on the ground, not that he had much of a chance yet to find out what was in this seemingly abandoned building.
What Thisday would see turning the corner was a aldult man, blonde and weathered, he was wearing a trenchcoat with sot and ash stains on the edges at the bottom, he was standing over a body, the body was hard to make out thorugh the cuts and slashs and deep wounds that blood was gushing out.
The man was covered in blood, it was hard to make out if he might have been injured himself, in one hand there was a shard of some sort of rook that was dark, almost a obsidian color. His other hand as he turned and saw Thisday had a odd other worldly glow to it, like there was embers of a fire that couldn't be seen around his free hand.
His gaze narrows at Thisday.

Who is Most Powerful
John Constantine x Maximoff oc
Oc name - Natalia Maximoff
Natalia is the daughter of Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch. After 7 years of living alongside Stephen Strange, Natalia comes into contact with a demonologist named John Constantine. She's been handed down the exact powers of her mother, her only issue is she has no clue how to control them. Instead they tend to control her more than she would like to admit.
Warnings: Cursing, mention of demons, demonology, summoning demons without knowing, uncontrollable abilities, death, Maximoff powers
Tumblr media
Nightmares.
Everyone has nightmares is what Strange always says. That they will always pass once you overcome them. But what if you do not overcome them? What if nightmares haunt your every thought, memory, word, and move? How do you truly overcome something that you can't even run away from?
Well this is how Natalia Maximoff feels every day and night of her life.. She holds the power of the Scarlet Witch, something her mother placed on her on her day of death. Her mother placed the dark soul on her despite the dangers and fear that resigned within that book. She was only 9 years old when her mother died, and 10 when Strange finally took her in.
But not even the greatest sorcerer can control that of the Scarlet Witches power.
The Scarlet witch haunts Natalia, pushing her to release her power. All to the point of creatures escaping mind without the teenage girl even noticing.
Currently Natalia laid curled into a ball, silk red sheets thrown from the circular bed, head tucked into her arms, red hair messy and formed into a halo around her arms. Red springing around her, yells and echoed growls surrounding her quiet feared whimpers. "Stop it.. p-please I'm scared.." she whimpered. "I c-can't.. I c-c-can't do it..." She cried. "Help me please... S-someone help me.." she begged.
"Natalia! Open the door!!" Strange called out. "T-they won't let me.." she whimpered. Red blazed around her fingers, hands pressed into her ears; dark brown eyes shooting open glowing red as a red barrier surrounded her a scream escaping her when a dark black figure shot at her. A red sphere appeared suddenly wrapping around her body pulling her into a dark hold of warmth.
It felt as though she was going through a portal of some sort. Soon her body came collapsing into a carpeted floor, head lifting only to fall again as sleep takes hold of her at least.
Strange busted through the door watching the figures fade into dust. He ran through the room searching every inch of the room for the young woman, but not a single sight of her came. Wong looked around as well, only to look towards Strange shaking his head.
Strange cursed covering his mouth, before quickly leaving the room to retrieve anything that could tell him where the young Maximoff child could be.

"Ah..w-what?" Natalia whispered. She shifted lifting an arm to cover her eyes until she was well adjusted to the bright light shinning over her. "I'm glad to see you awake." a woman's voice ran through her ears. Natalia's head turned seeing a tall woman dressed in a blue and red stars and stripes body suit with red knee high boots on, along with long black hair placed in a low ponytail. "Who... Who are you?" Natalia whispered.
"I go by Wonder Woman, but you can call me Diana.." the woman softly spoke. "You've had quite the journey dear.. How are you feeling?" Diana questioned. "I don't know.. s-scared.. my n-name is Natalia Maximoff.." she whispered. Diana smiled softly bowing her head, then turning to a male and female. The male was dressed in a trenchcoat with a white dress hit and messily done red tie with black pants and black dress shoes. While the woman wore leather black pants heeled boots, and a white dress shirt. The young girls head turned back towards Diana.
"where am I?" she whispered. "Washington D.C." the woman answered. How the hell did she get from kamar taj to Washington d.c?! She looked down fingers clenched against her leggings, sweater falling over her hands and red hair falling to cover her panicked face. But that panic hit quick when a dark figure appeared in front of her, sharp tooth grin appearing. A loud scream escaped her, body jerking ripping the IV's from her arm when she stood. But she stumbled and hit the floor blood dripping down her arms. The black figure turned red and lurked over her, it had the same bodily figure as Scarlet witch, the same thing that has been haunting her for 7 years.
A gold band surrounded the creature crushing it into dust, Diana rushing to the girls side kneeling beside her. "Bloody hell.." the man spoke lowering his hand looking at the shaking girl. "What was that??" the second woman questioned. Diana looked down at the shaking girl, her arms covering her face knees pressed into her chest ignoring the blood puddle appearing on the floor.
Diana helped the girl up gently setting her back down on the bed. She grabbed a towel placing it against the bleeding wound. The Amazon took notice of the red glowing coming from the girls eyes, that would disappear then return. The fear on her face let Diana know she had no control over what was happening, nor her coming through the roof of the justice league.
Tumblr media
Natalia sat in the room alone, head lowered feeling more alone than ever. She looked at her hands, watching the red blaze surround her fingers then move up her arms, then alone her body. Her leggings and grey sweater turned to a pair of grey skinny jeans and a black crop top with a pair of combat boots. She stood up slowly finally moving out of the room looking through the hallway.
She began roaming the large building, arms crossed against her chest. She came to a slow stop when she reached a library. Slowly entering she began wondering the shelves, eyeing each title closely. Soon a book of magic caught her attention, hand reaching up lifting it from it's placement slowly lowering it to her field of of vision. Walking towards on the lounge chairs, she sat down crossing her legs and placing the book on her lap beginning to read.
Diana came to a stop at the door looking inside standing beside a tall male dressed in black, both looking at the young girl. "I'm glad to see she left the room.. Can't imagine how lonely she feels.." Diana softly spoke. Diana turned her attention towards the demonologist who wasn't far from them. "Do you know of the woman that appeared in front of her this morning?" she questioned him.
"No.. But I'm sure she does." Constantine spoke nodding towards the girl. The girl looked up at looking towards the three slowly shutting the book feeling like she had invaded their space. Diana smiled walking towards her touching her shoulder. "You're okay dear, it's nice to know someone is using this space for something useful." she joked. Natalia looked down at the book then back up at her, then towards the two men.
"You wanna know what that was this morning..." Natalia whispered lowering her head. "If you are willing to speak then yes." the unknown male spoke deeply. Natalia turned her head staring towards an empty space of the library, a tall female figure standing dressed in red, beads hanging off her uniform with black and red eyes, hands painted black with witchcraft and power.
"I would like to say it is my mother.. it holds her face and voice, but it doesn't feel like her.. Strange calls her the scarlet witch, he said my mother placed her in me before she died.. But the things that cause my visions and these things to appear is something called a dark soul.. a book of evil that my mother was using to retrieve my father back from the underworld..." she spoke. "Everywhere I go they follow.. She follows.. and she scares me when I know she shouldn't. She said she doesn't wanna hurt me but she causes these nightmares and dark visions, telling me to do things that I do not want to do.. things that are evil.." she spoke up.
She lifted her hand red blazing around it, her brown eyes glowing as it overtook her arm. She lifting her arm aiming it in front of her, a mirror like glass appearing showing the woman. Turning her hand, palm facing downwards another woman appearing dressed in a red dress, red leather jacket and black stocking with long red hair smiling. The scene shattered another appearing of rubble and fire, a child with short red hair sitting in the rubble watching as a red blaze overtook the field.
The powerful sorcerer supreme protecting the child with everything he's got while attempting to control the witch. The witch landed in front of them, eyeing them closely before reaching her hand out a large blast of red striking the child in the chest. Loud high pitched screams echoed through the land, small body being overtaken by red, while the sorcerer was thrown back. Her once bright brown eyes turned to a dark evil red, skin inking black before it went pale once more, body falling as the red faded over her, a red and blue gem pressing in her chest entering her body creating a dark blaze to escape.
A scream escaped her once more causing a large red blaze to shoot at her mother, and no matter how much she tried to control it, it did not stop. Natalia lowered her hand pressing her hands into the sides of her head, glass shattering into nothing. She fell from the chair landing on her knees head lowering as the witch loomed over her like a predator. But suddenly a gold pentagram appeared above her, stopping the witch from looking at her, from even hearing her whimpers.
Diana looked at the girl then towards the still unnamed man with a look of shock. Constantine kneeled down looking at the girl before touching the exact area where the gem had entered the child, a bright glow appearing causing a cry to escape the girl.
'release me! I am most powerful, and can free you from this wretched land!!' echoed over and over. 'You are weak!! Unable to handle what you where given!' it yelled. Suddenly her body connected with Constantine's, who leaned back in shock then slowly his arm wrapped around her holding her small form close. He lifted his gaze looking into the red eyes of the witch, who cocked her head to the side examining him before disappearing.
"s'alright love.." he whispered. Diana watched the way she curled into Constantine, almost like she knew she found someone that could actually help her. His hand moved up and down her back, before finally resting on the lower portion of it, his warmth pressing into her cold skin.
"Where does this Strange live Natalia?" Diana softly questioned. "New York City.." Natalia answered. "Oh! That simple? Well we can always take you back there and return you to your caregiver!" Diana happily spoke. "In a whole different universe.." Natalia slowly added. "Of course.." Diana whispered in defeat.
Diana led Natalia towards a large room filled with computers. Her boots clicked alongside the teenagers. "Cyborg! This is the young girl we mentioned from another universe." Diana spoke with a genuine smile. A tall man in blue silver and black turned and look at the girl, he had one brown eyes and the other glowed blue. "Hey there kiddo.. You've been quite the journey huh?" he spoke. She shrugged taking it as any other day in her life surrounded by heros.
"I come from earth 616, that's what we call our universe surrounded by billions of more.. My power opened a portal to transport me because I was scared.. Just a new one to send me to a new universe.." she spoke. "What would ours be called?" a boy with green skin questioned. She looked around humming before stopping meeting deep purple eyes, a woman dressed in a purple cloak, body suit and booties, she also has a red crystal on her forehead almost between her eyes. Slowly turning her head away she looked at the boy. "Um I guess new earth after the flashpoint jolt.." she softly answered.
"You know about the flashpoint?" The male dressed in red and blue with a large 's' on his chest. "Well yes.. I live under the roof of Stephen Strange, aka the sorcerer supreme and I've been living alongside him for about 7 years now after the death of my parents. During those 7 years I have met a girl named America Charvez, she's able to go through universes by using emotion.. Well during the battle with my mother her and I had transported to this universe but it was in nothing but rubble and half of your universe was dead.. So to come back and to see everything normal like nothing had happened.. How else would one do so?" she spoke.
"You're very smart for someone who is being haunted." Another male spoke up dressed in red and yellow. 'Course a man would comment on that..' she thought. She walked towards Cyborg nodding towards the computer. "May I?" she softly asked. "Have at it." he spoke stepping back. She stepped forward eyeing the equipment. Slowly she laid her fingers down, inking black and entering the computer, lifting her head eyes glowing red a large scope appearing over them showing thousands of different universes. Hundreds of voices echoed in one ear and out the other, but she was searching for one and one only.
'You do so well controlling such small things.. release me Natalia.' scarlet witch whispered in her ear. Her glowing eyes began switching between red and brown, head shifting in pain. She shook her head looking back up allowing herself to concentrate as much as she can. 'why not appreciate what was given to you dear?' it whispered.
'Natalia!' a voice echoed, head lifting quickly but a hand overtook hers pulling it out. The scarlet witch stood above her glaring hand reaching out and grabbing her throat. "What the hell?!" the team called out. Constantine pulled his hands from his pockets moving forward, but the blazed red eyes of the woman made him stop.
"Mom.." she whispered. Suddenly a red blast soared through the room a bright portal slamming through her and scarlet witch. Constantine and Zatanna reacted quickly working to cast a spell, which of course didn't work out well, because a long red vine grasped both of them dragging them with.
Going through red flashes before finally be dropped in front of a set of stairs. Natalia came clashing through another portal fighting off the witch, before making a run through the known building, the woman following after her a darkness looming over her. Boots clicking along steel floors, sliding through a small cubby placing her hands on both walls making the door slam shut a protective seal appearing over it.
Boots could be heard along with Wong's voice echoing for the witch to disappear. An echoed yell could be heard before silence. "Natalia!" Strange yelled running towards the cubby. The seal was pulled off and he quickly opened the door, he went to reach for her but she flinched pulling her body closer to the inner wall away from him. He quickly moved his hand away looking at her with panic in his eyes. A red glowing vein was wrapped around her throat, clenching and knotted stopping it's release.
"Bloody hell.." a British accent came out horse. Natalia's head shot up hearing the voice, body leeching out and running towards the now standing brit, who was helping the magical woman up as well. Zatanna turned eyes widening when she saw the paniced girl. Constantine turned already expecting for the girl to latch onto him, her arms around his middle legs giving out on her.
Wong looked at Strange with confusion, who looked back with the equal amount of concern and question. "S'alright dove.. let's that get off you." he spoke. She moved away wincing when she moved her head causing the vine go tightened. He chanted something a black blade appearing behind her slicing the vine from her throat allowing her body to take in much needed oxygen.
Strange reached forward gently grabbing Natalia's arm, carefully pulling her back to check her over. He then nodded towards Wong to take her to her room to check her better. As Wong pulled her gently she looked back towards John and Zatanna. "John.." she whimpered as the elevator door shut.

thoughts on Mister E? I read Mister E (1991) (loved it!), The Trenchcoat Brigade (1999), and am currently reading through his Secrets of Haunted House (1975) stories so I would be very interested in Mister E thoughts
oh my god i love mister e and i'm glad you loved his solo too! i think he's one of those characters that's definitely -- and quite inexplicably too -- one of my absolute all time favourites that i don't really spend a lot of time thinking about outside of actively seeing him in something. i think he's wonderfully complex in a way that's not very easy to digest and all those rough edges makes him all that more compelling.
i know bob rozakis, who wrote his secrets of haunted house features, once complained about what vertigo did to mister e but i personally don't mind and think there's an easy way to reconcile those seemingly very different takes by reading it backwards in a manner of speaking: the man e becomes at the end of the trenchcoat brigade 1999 could very well grow into the more well-adjusted man we see in secrets. and isn't that fitting for someone able to walk through time like he is!
i also personally consider e one of dc's earliest canon gay characters, or at least canon sexually ambiguous characters. since you've read the solo, you know this falls into the less-than-ideal tropes category as per what we find out in #3 and this little bit from who's who 1990 #15
Tumblr media
but i believe that to have been handled well as all the rest of the incredibly heavy themes following him around are and it's a part of him that's very important to me because i sincerely can't name a single other comic book character whose sexuality has been approached in this particular way and who's been ultimately kept a hero (more or less). i think this also makes the dynamic between e and john constantine in books of magic all that more interesting to see in action, like the conversation about how the only good vampire is a dead one but we all know that's not quite what's being discussed there. even beyond that, e's narrative regarding the literal breaking of the cycle of abuse he'd been stuck in for so long remains absolutely stunning to me.
he's such a rare character to encounter in so many ways that i can't help but be endlessly compelled by him! thank you!!!

“So I guess the question is,” Bobby asks, “What're ya gonna do now, Dean?”
Dean looks at baby, considering. He smiles back at Bobby and answers, “Well, I gotta go for a drive.”

After about ten miles, Dean pulls over. There's a lookout just a few steps from the road, and he follows the trail to the end, feeling overwhelmed by the info Bobby has given him. Cas is here. He helped Jack rebuilding Heaven. He remembers the last time he'd seen Cas. He would have given everything to see him again, to get him back, but all the efforts he and Sam had tried on Earth were useless. Now, there's a good chance he might see Cas again and he has no idea what to say to him.
At this moment, he feels the presence of someone beside him. Anxiously he turns around. For a moment, he hopes to see Cas, but instead, it's Jack and a warm feeling of relief washes over him. He doesn't know if he's ready just yet.
“Jack!” He exclaims, pulling Jack into a tight hug. “It's so good to see you, kid!”
Jack hugs him back, clapping him on the back before freeing himself. “Hey, Dean. It's good to see you too. I'm sorry I couldn't intervene...but I'm glad you are here.” Dean just shakes his head.
“You know, kid, Sam and I had an agreement of going down smashing, and this I did. I … I have no resentments over this.”
Jack offers him a short nod before saying, “Dean, I think there's someone who wants to see you. Are you ready?”
Dean then notices a figure standing way back, beside one of the bushes. He is ready. He has to be. He's been waiting so long to see him again, he can't even believe that he doubted he was ready in the first place. Dean swallows back a big lump in his throat. He walks a few steps. There he is. Just beside a big flowerbed, bees humming around busily, Dean sees him standing in the glow of the setting sun. He lets his eyes wander from the well-known boots upwards, over the hem of this trenchcoat he missed so damn much. The coat is glistening in the sunlight, it looks like it's giving off a light of itself. Over the blue tie, upwards, over the 5-o'clock beard, then those soft lips, further to these warm and blue eyes, deep like the ocean, light as a cloudless sky. And Cas is looking back at him, wondering, tilting his head just a little, the way he always did, back then when they were on Earth. Dean doesn't feel the single tear running down his cheek, he doesn't see Jack looking happily at him, he can only see Cas, standing there in the sun, looking like the most beautiful being he's ever seen in his whole life. Cas, his friend, his family, his angel and most importantly – the love of his life.
He steps forward slowly, afraid that this is just a dream, one of those damned dreams he's had over the weeks after Cas had been gone, had thrown himself into the Empty. In his dreams, Cas was there, waiting for him, but all of a sudden, he'd be gone, swallowed up by a big nothingness, or bursting out in flames and screaming in pain, or saying 'I love you, Dean' but retreating while Dean wanted to get to him, to hug him, to hold him, until his angel was gone and away.
But Cas is still there, smiling now, looking at Dean with his amazingly blue eyes. He lifts his hands and whispers “Dean” and Dean can't keep it any longer. He takes the last steps in a few fast strides and falls into Cas' arms, pulling him into a tight hug and crying silent tears onto his shoulder. Cas starts stroking his hair, softly, hushing and repeating all over “It's okay, Dean” until they both break apart. Dean doesn't want to let go of Cas, he holds his arms, looks at him over and over, but he can't find the words to describe how much this means to him. So he just stands there, breathing heavily, watching him, until he feels Cas' hand upon his cheeks, wiping away the tears on Dean's face. And all of a sudden, Dean knows there's no need to hold anything back anymore, there's no need to hide anything, because there's nothing here to threaten them. Nothing is going to take Cas away ever again.
Dean swallows, clears his throat.
“Cas... I …You ... How?” is all he manages.
Cas shakes his head. “I'll tell you later. We've got all the time in the world now.” He looks at Jack, who is still standing a little way behind them, smiling. “Now, who wants to have some dinner?”
--
They take the Impala to drive to Cas' place. While Dean is driving, he's absurdly aware of Cas sitting beside him in the passenger's  seat. He even feels the intensity of Cas' eyes upon him, until he finally blurts out, “Hey buddy, it's good to see you too but – could you please stop staring at me? I'm not a freak show, y'know?” At that, Jack snorts loudly in the back, clapping Dean on his shoulder. He doesn't say anything else, but Dean knows that he's enjoying this moment as much as he is. He sends a small smile to Jack and Cas, but Cas has turned his face away from him, looking out of the window instead, chin in his hand. For a moment, Dean worries if his words had hurt the angel. This would be the last thing he'd want to do, especially on the first day of meeting him again. He wonders if he should say something, anything, to make sure everything's fine. But what should he say? Tell him he didn't mean it? He never was a man of apologies, and Cas knows that. He just wanted him to look away, cause his staring was so freaking distracting. He wants to return his gaze, he wants to never stop looking into those amazing eyes, eyes that had seen so much, eyes that had looked so worried at times, Dean almost couldn't even bare it. He wants Cas to be happy, to smile, to forget the bad stuff he'd lived through. And now he'd said something that hurt him. Why was it so hard to just take it back? He never knew, cause right at this moment Jack spoke up.
“It's the light blue house over there, Dean. Just drive up to the front, there's a parking spot for you beside Cas' car.”
Dean drives as being told, parking beside a yellow-brown-ish '78 Lincoln Continental. He recognizes it instantly, it's the same car Cas had been using whenever he wanted to get something done on his own, and Cas had always seemed pretty fond of it. It brings back a lot of memories and Dean starts smiling involuntary.
They get out of Dean's car and step up the front porch. Cas takes the lead, opening the white door for them, welcoming both into his home. Dean risks a quick glance at him before entering. Cas doesn't seem to be hurt anymore, he looks pleased and happy. And Dean thinks he understands why.
Dean enters the hallway, looking around and taking in as many details as he can. There is a kitchen to his right, with wooden fronts and very clean. Right ahead there's an arc, decorated with roses in different colours – red, white, yellow, lilac and pale blue. They are rooted in two pink flower pots, one on either side of the arc. To his left are two wooden doors. He guesses that one would probably lead to the bathroom, the other one he's got no idea. They walk through the arc, entering a really big living room, bright and clear. The windows here let the sun warm up the room just enough to feel right, and the light-colored furniture reflects rays of sunshine without blinding them. 'It's perfect', Dean thinks to himself, wondering where Cas got those pictures of them and Sam in the bunker. One of the photos shows them with their hands on one another's shoulders, smiling into the camera. Dean can see his own forced smile, dark circles under wary looking eyes. He takes the photograph of it's shelf, looking at him, Cas and Sam. Sammy. He's looking back at him out of the picture, smiling and waving and looking contend and happy.
“Dean.”
He forces himself to put the photo back on the shelf and turns around to see Cas standing in the doorway.
“You know, he's not a freak show,” Cas mimics, but Dean can see he's worried.
“Thanks, Cas. I know. It's just … I hope he's alright, I hope he's living a good life down there, but -”
“You miss him.” Cas finishes. It's not a question, it's a statement.
“Yeah, man,” is all he can answer. He turns around to wipe at something in his eyes, then turns again and asks, “When will we be eating?”
“In a few minutes. We're waiting for … someone to arrive here, it won't be much longer now.”
Just as Cas finishes his sentence, they hear a soft knock on the door and someone entering the house.
“Who is this?” Dean asks, but Cas is already on his way to the kitchen and Dean just follows.

Dean still can't believe it. He just finished his second helping of T-Bone-Steak, mashed potatoes and fried rice, everything as delicious as he'd hoped for (he'd left out the vegetables). His stomach is full and he leans back really satisfied. This is amazing. He hadn't given a thought to the fact that now that he was in Heaven, he might meet his mom and dad again. Seeing all of them on this table in Cas' dining room – Mary and John, Cas, Jack and Bobby – laughing, eating, smiling, talking about things they did 'down there' and things to do 'up here', it was unbelievable. Dean watches all of them closely. They look so full of joy he can't help grinning like an idiot. His mom is laughing hard from a joke of John and Dean enjoys to see her relaxed and free of worries. His dad claps her on the back, then starts to stroke her gently. He too looks unstressed, there's no trace of the old, haunted John in his face anymore. Even Bobby, though still being his grumpy self, seems pleased.
“Alright, Dean, I think it's time for a little storytime.” Cas watches him intently as he explains, “I think you wanted to know how I could escape The Empty and start my new life here.”

--

All eyes are upon Cas now. Mary puts the plates away, coming back with two six-packs of beer. She hands everyone a beer and Cas starts talking.
“As most of you know, I went with The Empty willingly, keeping my side of the deal we had made way back. Several months ago, there was a problem at hand. The Empty wanted to keep Jack. I told her to take me instead of him and she agreed to that but wanted to be sure to crush me. So she told me that she wouldn't just swap - she'd come and get me as soon as I would be truly happy. And that she did. When we talked, Dean, I had made a choice”. At this, Cas sends him the slightest smile, which makes Dean want to forgive him in an instant. “Well, as you know, this choice led to me being taken by that bitch. For a while, I lay there in nothingness, black nothing all around me, and I hoped to fall asleep, which I knew was sure to happen to everyone The Empty had swallowed. But not me. She wouldn't let me sleep because I had been an inconvenience to her. She wouldn't visit me either. I lay there until I couldn't lie anymore, I sat there for hours and hours, and finally, I stood up. There was no way to give up this easy, The Empty couldn't be invincible, right?” They all nod, fascinated by his story. Jack even has his eyes closed. Another big gulp of beer, then Cas goes on. “So I wandered around, screaming and trying to punch the Nothingness. I called her a lot of stuff just to get her attention, but it was useless. In the end, I stumbled and fell on my knees and was none-the-wiser. But that was the moment I realized it. There was nothing to be done for me alone. But there was someone who had already conquered The Empty, who had woken me up last time, who would maybe be able to do something about my situation. And even though I didn't want to involve him, I saw no other choice. So I prayed. And I was answered.”
“But I prayed too, why did I never get an answer?” Dean sputters out. Instantly, he feels the heat of shame crawling up his neck, but he still locks eyes with Jack, who has finally opened them.
“I heard you, Dean. And I am very sorry. I knew this would disappoint you, but there was no way for me to interfere down there anymore. I couldn't answer, because I couldn't bear to tell you. I am sorry.” Dean swallows hard, then Jack continues, “Then I heard Castiel. And I realized that I wasn't about to interfere down there – but The Empty was not down there, and there were several changes to be made, changes that were overdue.
I gathered up all the strength I could master. I summoned those around me who were willing to help. Gabriel was the first to respond. It might not surprise you that he had taken advantage of everyone assuming him dead, submerging into the benefits of a random gambler's life outside the radar. Yet when I called out to ask the help of every angel available, he immediately came to my side to be of assistance.
Michael was second to answer my call. He asked a lot of questions, wondering if he could trust me. He was hardest to convince – but wanted The Empty gone as much as I did. So he stayed and helped.
Most of the other living angels came to stand with us, but we still weren't enough. So I started to wake up the deceased. This was rather dangerous, as I didn't want The Empty to know something was up too soon. But Cas here did a great job – when I had awoken an angel, he'd find him and explain the matter, trying to be as quiet as possible.  Once we had gathered quite a number of angels, they took their positions, waiting for my command. First step was to lure The Empty out of her hiding place. Hannah, Anna, Gadreel and Joshua did a great job with that! They annoyed her one after the other, to the point she wanted to throw them all out. Next step was to surround and distract her. So everyone did their best to get her attention, circling her in further. Then the tricky part started. While the inside angels surrounded her, kept her encircled and disturbed, enraging her further to keep her at that spot, we on the outside started to open up a crack, getting others out of there. Gabriel took an essential part here, building up an illusion to cover our crack. As soon as we had Jane and Raphael, I knew it was time to finish it, because the inside angels were taking hit after hit.
With the help of Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Jane, I managed to take hold of The Empty. Like Chuck did with Amara, we cast her out, chaining her up in the same lonely dimension Amara had once been held in. Michael sacrificed his powers to bear the new Mark that still was needed to have her caged.”
Jack pauses for a moment, takes a sip from his beer and watches the others. Mary and John are holding hands on the table, switching short glances now and then. Bobby looks like he's fallen asleep already, beer still clutched in his hand. Castiel seems to be entranced by Jack's story, elbows on the table, chin resting on his folded hands. A small smile playes on his lips and Dean notices how beautiful Cas' face looks when being relaxed. He doesn't know if he's even allowed to think this way, but he can't help it. He tries to focus on the story again.
“So, you cast her out. I guess the angels on the inside got out – seeing as Cas is here. But what about the other creatures this thing had held for an eternity?”
“Yes, that.” Jack answered, nodding. “I assumed it would be no good to send them all with The Empty. Instead, Jane and me enlarged the Purgatory, sent every monstrous creature down there and asked Rowena to magnify the intensity of their 'door'. In return she'd get the demon souls sent to Hell, and she willingly agreed to that.”
“Great.” Dean states, “more demons for her, no big deal.”
“Dean,” Cas whispers, obviously annoyed by this interruption.
“I don't like the idea of giving her more power, alright? It's no good. Rowena will use this somehow to do something bad, you know her, Cas!”
“Yes, Dean, I do know her. That's why Jack is keeping an eye on things. I thought you'd be happy to know that we all are safe now. I thought you'd be happy to see … me.”
All eyes are on Dean now, which makes him shift in his seat, feeling pretty uncomfortable.
“Man, you know I'm happy about … this all. I'm just wondering what this means for those left on Earth.”
“You mean Sam.”
Dean nods, not sure if he's able to answer right now.
Jack jumps in. “Don't worry, Dean. He's safe. I am sure of it – I can see it. Please believe me that no harm will come upon him as long as I'm here.”
This really does reassure him and he takes a big swig of his beer. He nods, satisfied for now. Then another thought comes to him.
“What about the angels you saved from The Empty? What exactly happened to them?”
“Oh, that's easy. Every deceased angel got a second chance. I made sure their loyalties were with me, then I sent them to work. There's a lot to do up here, and most angels are glad to be able to help. Michael is an exception though. As I said, he's had to sacrifice his powers to bear the new Mark, so he's powerless now. He's in hiding ...” Jake grins, “but I think … he'll bee alright.
With The Empty being gone, there were new rules to administer. Every monstrous creature – minus the demons - that dies from now on will find himself in purgatory. Demons that die will find themselves in Hell, but powerless. Rowena told me she's got some 'lovely tasks' for them. And every angel that meets his end will come back up here, being powerless but having a place to call home.”
Home. Dean looks around, taking in this wonderful place that Cas can now call his home. He loves this idea, and he feels quiet content with knowing all this.
After this, they switch the topic to easier stuff. Their conversation is light now, mostly about stuff to do in Mary's and John's house, like fixing a little hole in their roof, or repainting their furniture. John even asks if Dean would help him restore a '64 Ford Falcon and Dean eagerly agrees to be there tomorrow. But after a while of talking about the ups and downs of this special car, Mary stifles a wide yawn and John laughs. “It's time I guess! Thank you for this wonderful dinner and a great evening guys. Guess we'll see each other next week?”
“Same time, same place,” Cas answers grinning. “See you tomorrow, Dean,” John says and pulls him into a tight hug. Mary ruffles through his hair before hugging him, then she too says good-bye. Jack wakes up Bobby, half-pulling him out of his chair and tells him that it's time to get home. Bobby grunts, gives Dean a nod, and walks out the front door without another word, probably too tired to speak. Last to say goodnight is Jack, and he pulls both Dean and Cas into a big hug. They clap his back, and Dean thinks he can hear Cas whisper 'I'm proud of you' into Jack's ear. They all say good-night, then Jack is gone too. Closing the door behind Jack, Cas turns around to Dean, watches him closely, a slight pink shade on his cheeks.
“There's a guest room down the hall if you want to...” he leaves his sentence unfinished, but Dean understands.
He looks Cas in the eyes, feeling his heart suddenly hammering against his chest. There were words he wanted to say, but he doesn't remember. He's surprised – all those years down there, he had to hold everything back, and he has no fucking idea how he did that. Cas' eyes are still watching him, asking silent questions. Throwing cautions in the wind, Dean finally closes the distance and pulls Cas into a gentle kiss, hands on his cheeks. After a moment of surprise, Cas kisses him back, his lips soft and warm, and lays his hands around Deans waist. Their kiss seems to take an eternity, Dean has no feeling of time anymore, he just feels Cas' lips on his, and he knows that this is his happy place. His peace. His... he allows himself to think the word – his home.

This fic is a gift for @expectingtofly on tumblr as part of the starrynightdeancas gift exchange. It's my first-ever written fanfic and I'd love to know what you think about it! I had a lot of fun writing this, creating my own kind of fix-it fiction. Also, I tried to stay canonical – with one exception, because I will never accept that the trickster was truly finished off!
Please note that I’m not a native speaker and there might be some spelling and grammar mistakes. I’m sorry! But I hope you’ll enjoy it nonetheless.
Have fun reading and leave a comment if you like <3
Not yet posted on AO3, still waiting for my invitation. I’ll have you updated as soon as I can post it there!

Watching Constantine 1.06 "Rage of Caliban" again for the umpteenth time. This episode has so many of my favourite moments in it: John getting chucked out of Nora's house, the Sword of Night, "what's in the trenchcoat?", "I've never punched an angel, but you are begging for it", the little whistle choking into silence, Manny's little revelation to John about his childhood while in the jail cell, the jump scare in the Halloween haunt, the nod to that Sean Phillips Hellblazer cover...
Genuinely, this show deserved a better chance. It was so damn good.

Rewatching Faith
Welcome to “Faith Healer Karens and Heretical Cookies: A Supernatural Rewatch Blog” with Lor and Mace!
 Up today, s1e12: Faith
While saving a pair of children from a monster, Dean receives an electric shock that severely damages his heart—like, gonna die super soon damages. Dean is kind of *shrug*, but Sammy is fired up. He’s gonna find a way to save his brother, to the tune of tracking down every rumor of faith healers and whatnot he can. (Fifteen years later he can’t even dial 911, but sure, fine, whatever.) Sam does find a faith healer; Dean, all adorable in a sweatshirt, labels the whole thing hinky; then Dean does get healed—whaaat? Whoops, turns out the healer is using a captive Reaper to exchange the life of someone innocent, healthy, and not ready to die for whomever he’s saving. The boys have to figure out who’s really controlling the Reaper and how to stop them, all while Dean navigates the pain, grief, and guilt of knowing that shutting the healer down means the sweet woman he met who’s dying of a brain tumor will, in fact, die.
Below is a log of our real-time reactions as we watched. Remember that there may be spoilers for any part of SPN’s 15-season run here.  Note also that the nature of our conversation is adult and thus it may contain adult language and themes.
 [and we begin:]
Lor:
I love this episode so much
 Mace:
 yeah it's a good one
especially looking backward post-Cas
 Lor:
 yep
Mace:
all that crisis of faith nonsense just needed an angel in a trenchcoat who boops you on the forehead
 Lor:
 YES
oh. i just realized. this episode now makes me go "fuck 327" REAL hard
 Mace:
ope yep I thought about that too
 Lor:
because they do "mundane thing (almost) kills Dean" here SO MUCH BETTER
 Mace:
because THIS IS HOW SAM ACTUALLY WOULD RESPOND
 Lor:
 ALSO THAT
 Mace:
 yep
 Lor:
 HANNAH!
 I mean, not-Hannah, but HANNAH
 Mace:
 YES
 "we can't work miracles"
 Lor:
 "we can't work miracles"
 sobs
daytime TV is terrible, is it, Jensen?
 Mace:
 ha!
 Lor:
"I swear I'll haunt your ass"
   "aw, it's a little funny"
 Mace:
 adorable
 Lor:
 oh god fuuuuuuck 327
 AND FUCK JOHN
 Mace:
"burial or cremation" aw, come on, you know you'd get a hunter's burial
 Lor:
 RIGHT?
the way Sammy's got jiggly leg on this phone call
 Mace:
 oh Sammy
 Lor:
I just want to hold him
 Mace:
 YES
 Lor:
 SWEATSHIRT!DEAN
 Mace:
RIGHT?! Like, he never wears those
is this his version of Buffy dungarees?
 Lor:
 OMG YES
he needs a hug and he won't ask for one so he wears a sweatshirt
  THE MUD
"I believe I said a specialist" aw, lawyer Sammy
 Mace:
 HAHA YES
 oh Darla
 Lor:
"I think you just turned me around on the subject" DEAN WINCHESTER
 Mace:
 HAHAHA
 Lor:
Dean, baby, you can't even get out of a car, honey
 Mace:
he wouldn't need to - Baby's backseat has seen things
 Lor:
HAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Sam making him sit up front
 Mace:
one of my favorite things about pre-Cas SPN is the tension between what they do/what they know is real and Dean's faith crisis and Sammy's blind belief
 Lor:
 YES
he already thinks HE DOESNT DESERVE TO BE SAVED
"I didn't pick you, Dean, the lord did" I mean JEEZ
 Mace:
hm, I think right now it's unbelief, but once he is healed, yep
and then when he finds out someone else died because he was healed? oof Dean Guilt Overdrive
 Lor:
mmm, maybe both? like, nope, it's not real, but if it IS, someone else should get it
 YEP
 "no they don't"
 Mace:
 YUP
 Lor:
Dean asking Sam to have faith in HIM
 Mace:
which was all sarcasm of course
 Lor:
 yeah
"when did the miracles start" like they're a disease
 Mace:
Cas comes along and has complete faith in Dean and Dean cannot suss it out AT ALL
 Lor:
 omg YES
 Mace:
 YES
 Lor:
it's like a ramped up "undone by kindness" trope and I LOVE IT
 Mace:
 YEP
 Lor:
"what did you see in my heart" I can't
 Mace:
 YES
 Lor:
(as we are rewatching I am noticing just how much people of color are literally on the margins of the narrative in so many of these episodes)
 Mace:
 (YEP)
 Lor:
the look on Dean's face and then the way he just goes right to asking Layla what's wrong instead of engaging with the mom
 Mace:
well, who would want to talk to that Karen
 Lor:
 HAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I was just about to say that if you're Karening at a faith healer, you got some soul searching to do
 Mace:
SHE WANTS TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER
  HAHAHA
 Lor:
Sammy apologizing before anything else squishes him
 Mace:
 YES
and he looks so cuddly in that hoodie
 Lor:
 he does
 Mace:
I love that the reaper looks like this and I wish they didn't change to normal-looking people later
 Lor:
 agreed
wow, that dude getting healed reminds me SO MUCH of scene in Star Trek V
 Mace:
mmm I don't know the ST movies really. I've only seen them once, I think, each
 Lor:
 I'll tell ya later
 Mace:
 k
ope here we go with Dean and the black and white
 Lor:
a guy playing god is a monster in Dean's book
 YEP
 Mace:
we need to keep track of how he and Sammy flip-flop on this issue because they really do
 Lor:
 yeah
 Mace:
I suspect there's a pattern with Dean somehow
 Lor:
 yeah
one of Roy's parishioners needs to step up and trim those bushes for him
 Mace:
 snork
when is it okay to kill a human and when is it really not, because I'm sure I remember Dean protesting against it at some point
 Lor:
oh yeah, he for sure does
and then there's the boys' flipflopping on when it's not okay to kill a monster
 Mace:
 yep
I put all that in the same category
 Lor:
 yeah
 Mace:
because Dean is calling this dude a monster
 Lor:
 yeah
also, he doesn't seem to have any problem with the reaper
 Mace:
so it's more a question of at what shade of monster is it okay to gank
 Lor:
 yeah
ooof I forgot that Dean LITERALLY has to stop Layla from getting healed
 Mace:
 yep
yeah, well, I think reapers are more just part of the natural order of things? and don't they explore that notion later on, too? Like, it's VERY counterproductive to stop a reaper from their work
 Lor:
 well sure
but what makes them different from vampires then?
or werewolves?
or anything?
 Mace:
because without them no one could die when they're supposed to
that sort of natural order
the necessary kind
 Lor:
no I know what you mean
 Mace:
then I don't know what your point is then, I guess?
 Lor:
but from Dean's pov, if he doesn't have faith in a power, why does he see the reapers as a thing that's doing a job and that's okay?
ooof, Dean's nod when she starts yelling like he's attacking her
 ooo Karen is DISAPPOINTED
 Mace:
it doesn't seem to be a matter of faith for him
 Lor:
I guess I wonder where any sense of people dying when they're "supposed to" comes from if he has no faith system?
 Mace:
but maybe none of that is actually in this ep just yet. there's only one monster of the week and it's the pastor's wife here, controlling the dark power and not the dark power itself
 Lor:
 yeah
 Mace:
yeah, again, I just think we're getting ahead of the characterization here
that notion isn't in play yet
 Lor:
 yeah, I suspect so
"hey! gonna put that fear a god in me?" OMG Dean
 Mace:
oh come on, cops wouldn't just drop everything and give chase like that
 Lor:
 nope
 Mace:
 that's just silly
 Lor:
 definitely not both of them
 clever Dean
 Mace:
 yep
the tragedy of this episode is that she marks Dean to die to save Layla, and Dean wouldn't actually argue, to be honest
 Lor:
 YEP
 Mace:
I mean, he's been arguing for that sort of thing to be the just thing all along
 Lor:
 yep
 Mace:
 he...doesn't run from the reaper...
 Lor:
 nope
and the fact that her sense of who's wicked and who isn't is so TWISTED. like, obviously, given her black altar, sacrificial garbage, but she's also just picking HORRIBLY
 Mace:
 yeah
 Lor:
 bye, SueAnn
 Mace:
 omg when the reaper smiles
 CREEPY
 Lor:
don't trip on your hypocrisy on your way out
 YEP
 Mace:
 HAHAHA
 Lor:
 the Impala door creeeeeeaks
 Mace:
 HA!
 Lor:
 ooof, Dean
 Mace:
 Aw, SAMMY
 Lor:
 YES
a beautiful brotherly moment
 Mace:
 YES
 Lor:
 THIS SCENE
 Mace:
 YES
 Lor:
both of them, I just. it's so sad and tender and and and
 Mace:
 yeah
 Mace:
 although her blind faith...irritates me
 Lor:
aaauuuugh she touches his head
"I'm not the praying type, but I'm gonna pray for you" HIS FACE
 Mace:
 yeah
  [after the episode ended:]
Lor:
hmm. it... doesn't bother me. I think because it seems so contained in self for her? she's not trying to put it on anyone else
 Mace:
that's fair. It just seems overly simplistic on a number of levels
it's likely more me than the character or the writing - people who subscribe to the blind faith thing just baffle me in general
 Lor:
huh. it seems peaceful to me. I am so often very annoyed by blind faith stuff, but she doesn't bug me
 Mace:
no, she's not annoying herself, really. it's the notion of God Works in Mysterious Ways that irritates the crap out of me. Okay, you're terminal and you're at peace with it - that's commendable and I love that, but it should be inner peace and personal strength not blindly believing in some dude in a robe in the sky deciding that ope, you get a brain tumor now be happy about it because I WORK IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS
 Lor:
maybe it's that they don't' get into any theological or practical specifics that lets it work for me? and because I feel like for Dean it's so much about finding SOMETHING to have faith in
 Mace:
yep, I'd love that to, but, she does actually say the mysterious ways thing and goes and ruins it
 Lor:
iiiinteresting. see, I think "dude in a robe in the sky" is a fundamental misunderstanding of the theology. I know a LOT of people, when they say "god works in mysterious ways" DO mean "big sky daddy knows best," but I'm not sure that's really what's "supposed" to be at the heart of that kind of faith. I think it's a lot more like Tolkien's "despair is for those who know the end beyond all doubt and we do not." like, we just don't know enough to KNOW. I don't get sky-daddy vibes from Layla. Though I suspect the writers expect most of the general audience to assume that's what she's talking about
 Mace:
the setting suggests fundamental christians are the ones in that tent, though, I'd argue
 Lor:
for sure. I think the reason the episode works for me is that the setting and the atmosphere and the STUFF of the episode says "fundamental christians" but the writing of Layla leaves room to not read her that way. (it's interesting to contrast her with her mom.) which is kind of a brilliant move on the part of the show. I suspect it works for a really broad spectrum of viewers where with a slightly different presentation it could really NOT
 Mace:
Ah. Okay. I think you are much more tolerant of such things than I am then. As I said, it works okay for me until she vomits out the platitude about god and his mysterious ways and then I’m out.
 Lor:
 Fair
I also grew up NOT having to deal with anyone who did the platitudes thing? So I may just be a little more tolerant of it because I didn't really ever have any bad experiences with religious folks in my most impressionable years
 Mace:
Ah, sure. And I grew up getting kicked out of Sunday school classes for questioning all sorts of things
 Lor:
WHAT? gives baby!Mace cookies and hunts down a Sunday school teacher to hit them about the ears
 Mace:
 munches cookies heretically
 Lor:
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

5 times Dean had work to do, and the one time he actually enjoyed it.  pairing: dean/cas a commission for @jensenackhles <3 2k words
One
Dean first heard the phrase a few weeks after his mom died.
John had checked them into a motel—one of the many that they had cycled through in the past few weeks. Sam was asleep in the crib, and John was on the opposite bed. Dean had woken up to a strange sound; he rolled over and saw John at the foot of the bed, head bowed, shoulders shaking.
Dean had never seen his dad cry before. Even right after the fire, when he was telling the detectives what happened at the police station: completely dry-eyed. So seeing his dad cry was… strange. Dean wanted to make it stop.
He pushed back the sheets and hopped off the bed. Walking on unsteady, sleepy toddler legs to his dad, he put either hand on John’s knees, looking up at him. John was clutching a worn picture of Mary between his fingers.
“Are you okay, dad?” Dean asked.
John continued to stare at the picture of Mary’s smiling face. After a moment, he sniffed. Wiped his face that was striped with tears with the back of his hand. He ruffled Dean’s hair and said gruffly, “Yeah, kid. I’m fine. Get back to sleep, okay? We got work to do in the morning.”
And the next morning in the car, when Sam was crying in his carseat and kicking up a storm, Dean patted his head and said, “It’s okay, Sammy, shh. Stop crying. We got work to do, okay? So you can’t cry. We got to work.”
Sam just stared at him with big teary and trusting eyes. Dean didn’t even know what he was really saying at the time; what he was getting them into.
Two
He didn’t make it a habit to say the words out loud often. He said them more to himself, as a mantra to keep himself on track. But sometimes they would slip out, when he really needed to orient himself: when he really needed to kick his own ass into gear and push down the emotions.
The second time he remembers saying it was when he was 25. He was driving to a case with Danny, the son of one of John’s hunting friends. John was out of commission from a nasty encounter with a wendigo, so they were tag-teaming the ghoul hunt.
Dean felt his phone buzz, wedged between the driver’s seat and his leg. He pulled it up, glancing at it, just in case it was important. His stomach immediately sank when he saw Sam’s number.
Got to Stanford okay, in case you were wondering. Too hot here. Miss you and Dad.
The muscles in Dean’s jaw jumped as he clenched it tighter.
“Who’s that?” Danny asked, cocking his shotgun. “Somethin’ about the case?”
“No,” Dean said. He pulled into the driveway of the house where the hauntings were taking place. Eased the Impala into park. “Focus up,” he commanded, cocking his own gun aggressively. “We got work to do.”
Three
The seal to the gates of hell are open. Ruby tricked them, and Sam triggered the apocalypse.
Dean doesn’t know what to say.
History is repeated again, where Dean is sitting helplessly on one hotel bed, Sam crying on the other. He’s bent at the waist, shoulders hunched, tears silently streaming.
Dean knows that he’ll blame himself forever. He knows that this might break him.
He knows he needs to say something.
Getting up unsteadily, he walks over to the bed and sits down on the other side of his brother. The bed creaks from his weight. “C’mon, Sam,” he says into the silence. “We didn’t know, okay? We couldn’t have seen it coming.”
Sam remains silent, glaring at the ground.
A lead in his gut, Dean reaches out a hand, and places it on Sam’s shoulder. “We gotta keep going, okay? We just… we gotta keep fighting. We can’t just sit down and take it.”
“What’s the point, Dean?” Sam asks. He shrugs off Dean’s shoulder and twists around to glare at him. “Why even try, if I keep fucking everything up? Huh?”
“Because people need us, Sam,” Dean snaps. “We need to finish what we started. We gotta make sure the world is safe, okay? There’s no time to sit around and feel sorry for our damn selves.”
Sam stares at his hands, stonily silent.
Dean stands. Holds out a hand to his younger brother. “C’mon. We got work to do.”
Sam glares at Dean’s hand for a moment before sighing resignedly. He takes it, and stands.
Four
When Dean met Cas, a lot changed.
His view on angels not so much: he still thinks they’re a bunch of dicks. But the way that things aren’t always so black and white. That people—angels—can change. That Dean can maybe be… loved. Saved. Worthy of it.
At least Cas seems to think he’s worth it, anyway.
He tucks all these feelings into his back pocket; doesn’t want them to see the light of day. Because if they did… well. Then he would have more than his brother to be worried about. And in his line of work, any attachments are frankly a terrible decision.
Except, it’s Cas, and Dean can’t keep his eyes off him.
And he stares at Cas a lot. He knows he does; it’s almost like there’s a magnet that pulls his eyes to Cas’s face and stays there. Sam notices it; Cas notices it; everyone notices it. Dean just… can’t seem to help it.
Maybe it’s that otherworldly look that he always has on his face. Maybe it’s the perpetual five o’clock shadow that paints his sharp jaw. Maybe it’s because Cas is usually staring right back at him, all up in Dean’s personal space no matter how much Dean complains about it (even though he really doesn’t mind. Not at all. He’d love to have Cas even closer, actually).
Maybe it’s just because Dean has a damn crush on an angel and he doesn’t know what to do about it.
“So, you’re sweet on my brother, huh?” Gabriel asks Dean with a leering grin.
Dean snaps his eyes back into the room instead of watching Cas’s back leave the room. “What the fuck? No.”
Across the room, Sam puts a hand over his mouth to hide his smile. Dean wants to punch him so that he’ll finally respect his damn elders.
“Liar,” Gabriel says.
“C’mon, that weirdo? In a trenchcoat? What are you smoking?”
“He has a… jeno se qua,” Gabriel says with a wave of his hand in the air. “A certain sexiness, if you will.”
“I’m not sweet on him.” Dean can feel the blood rising in his cheeks, and he hates it.
“Sure, Dean-o.” Gabriel winks. “Sure.”
Cas walks back into the roomthen , looking adorably confused, and of course Dean’s blush increases. He tries to look casual as he leans against the wall with a glare, avoiding Cas’s eyes.
Sam sputters as he tries not to laugh at Gabriel batting his eyelashes in Cas’s direction.
“Okay, knock it off, you idiots,” Dean snaps. “We got work to do.”
Cas tilts his head in that adorable way, asking, “What do you want me to knock off, Dean?”
“Your pants,” says Gabriel casually.
Sam loses it then, bursting into laughter.
Five
The apocalypse is done. By some miracle, they all lived through it—Cas, Bobby, and even Sam, who managed to push Lucifer out before throwing him into the pit.
There’s no imminent danger, no immediate threat—which is probably why Sam decides to bring it up.
“Are you going to tell him how you feel?” Sam asks. They’re sitting at Bobby’s table, each nursing a beer. Sam is still exhausted from his encounter with Lucifer, so he’s not getting out to hunt much these days; they normally spend their nights like this, just soaking in the quiet before the next inevitable storm.
Dean looks at his brother incredulously. “What’re you talking about?”
“Don’t play stupid,” Sam says. “I’m not an idiot, Dean. I see the way you look at him.”
Dean grumbles, sipping at his beer.
“Dean.” Sam sets his beer down. “The world is quiet. For once. The apocalypse is avoided, Michael and Lucifer are in the cage, just—there will be crap that comes up later. It can’t be avoided. But at least now, in this quiet moment, you can figure things out. With him.”
“Just leave it alone, Sam,” Dean sighs. He doesn’t even have the energy to argue with him anymore. Snatching his beer off the table, he says, “Think I’m gonna finish this outside.”
He ignores Sam’s worried eyes that follow him out of the house.
Leaning against the porch railing, he sips at his beer, glaring out into the salvage yard. Something familiar catches his eye: a figure wrapped in a trench coat, head tilted back and staring up at the stars.
Dean takes a steadying pull of beer before stomping down the porch steps. He stands next to Cas, the neck of his beer bottle hanging loosely from his fingers. Cas gives him a nod of acknowledgement before looking back up at the twinkling stars above them.
Clearing his throat, Dean says gruffly, “So, you thinkin’ of going back there?”
“Back there?” Cas asks.
“To, you know.” Dean waves his beer at the sky. “To Heaven.”
“Heaven is not in the sky, Dean,” Cas chides.
“Okay, whatever. Just answer the damn question: are you going back?”
Cas lifts one shoulder in barely a shrug. He looks at Dean then, blue eyes sparkling in the night. “I might not go back—if I have a reason to stay.”
“Well, you might have one,” Dean says. “There’s plenty more shit to take care of down here. Rumor has it Raphael is pissed about you rebelling against the apocalypse, so he’ll probably stir some shit up that you have to—”
“Dean.” Cas turns to him, suddenly very serious. “Do I have a reason to stay?”
Dean can feel his breath catch in his throat. He realizes that he could lie. Could laugh it off with a joke or a snarky comment, like he usually does. But he knows it’s now or never. Cas could leave. He’d do anything to stop that.
“Dean,” Cas says again. There’s a filter of emotion that comes through to his eyes—it looks like hope. That makes Dean crack.
“Maybe you do have a reason,” Dean says. “Maybe we want you to, I don’t know—stay.” He looks at the ground. “Maybe I want you to stay.”
Cas takes Dean’s hand. Dean’s heart rate increases as Cas rubs his thumb against Dean’s calloused knuckles. “I want to stay, too.”
“Good, that’s, uh.” Dean smiles wide. Steps closer to Cas so that their chests are nearly touching. “That’s good, Cas.”
+1
Dean asks Cas to marry him six months later on the hood of the Impala, burgers and beers between them.
He doesn’t see the point in waiting when he just…. knows. Cas seems to know too, since Dean can barely get out the question before Cas is tackling him to the hood and kissing him senseless, whispering Yes between each breath.
Sam cries when they tell him. Of course. Bobby pretends not to get emotional, but Dean sees him wiping at his face a minute later. The angels are, of course, pissed—but Cas couldn’t care less.
Apparently Cas had been planning to ask Dean from the beginning—he and Charlie had even been making a wedding scrapbook with Charlie in the past few months.
Cas pulls out the scrapbook to show Dean the next morning, both in their pajamas and sitting at Bobby’s kitchen table. His cheeks are stained from embarrassment, unsure how Dean will take it.
But Dean finds it the least embarrassing thing in the world—he just flips through the pages and pages of wedding decorations, tuxes, and rings, and gets increasingly choked up. He almost loses it when he sees the Enochian words for “Forever” inscribed on a ring that Charlie made in photoshop as a mock-up.
Dean puts down his coffee, and kisses his fiance soundly. When he pulls back, Cas is smiling, bright as the rising sun.
Shutting the book, Dean stands, and grabs Cas’s hand with a wink. “Well, Cas. Looks like we got work to do.”

Dear Fandom5k Author
My AO3 account (sidewinder)
Hello and thank you for writing for me! I’m excited to give this exchange a try for the first time and cannot wait to read what you can come up with for one of my requests. Please note I’d love any of them equally, no matter if I have more prompt ideas for one or the other. Some I seriously would love just about anything about since they are so rare, others I have more specific requests to scratch itches I haven’t seen written before (or that much.)
General Likes:
Soumates with a twist. I love soulmate/soulbond AUs, as long as it’s just not a shortcut to happily-ever, no-conflict fluff. I want there to be some difficulties or angst involved. For instance, I’d love seeing any fusion/inspired-by fics based off the concept of the AMC Soumates series - where there’s a newly-developed scientific test a person can choose to take to find their soulmate (if the other person out there has also taken the test). That way it’s a choice to find out or not. Would an already established couple want to take the test to find out if they’re really “meant” to be together or not? What if they find out other people are their “soulmates”? What about the possibility of platonic soulmates vs romantic? Discussions for the future if/when one partner dies before the other? I’d love to see these questions played out with one of my fave ships in either a  happy or somewhat angsty/dark way.
Vacation/travel stories. Being unable to travel this past year+ thanks to covid-19 has me desperate to explore and live vicariously through my favorite characters! So I’d love a story involving travel to somewhere new (to them). It could be a romantic getaway/honeymoon trip to somewhere special - and I love it when an author “takes me” to a favorite city/place of their own. Or two friends just going on an escapade together, maybe one sensing the other needs some time away from a stressful situation or workplace.
Smutty likes: I love extended kissing scenes, frottage, light restraint play, sharing-one-bed-for-~reasons~-ooops-how-did-we-wake-up-cuddling, bathing/caretaking an injured partner-turns-erotic, desperate/reunion sex.
Canon-divergent AUs - I’m always good with fix-its, shifts in canon that only change one thing and see what happens next or instead.
Do Not Wants:
A/B/O dynamics, mating heats. (I do like Supernatural fics that explore Castiel and the angels having bird-like behaviors and instincts, however.)
animal abuse/death
anything related to pregnancy/childbirth/kidfic (except for Jack in SPN)
formalized BDSM relationships
scat/watersports
unrequested alternative-universe scenarios such as high school/mundane/genderswap/coffee shop/fantasy/etc. There are a few ships/groups where I would enjoy specific AUs, and those are outlined below.
Completely sad endings/permanent character death or injury that isn’t part of canon
Rape/non-con between requested characters. Dubious consent is fine in situations like magic spells/possession/fuck-or-die, however.
Supernatural
AU - Canon Divergence, Character Development, Established Relationship, Getting Together, Fix-it fic, Interpersonal Drama, Smut, Angst, Canon-Style Plot - Freeform, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery/Procedural, Slice of Life, Worldbuilding, Horror
In general for SPN, I love canon-divergence AUs at pretty much any point in time (especially as they kept having so many dumb reasons in canon to keep Dean & Cas apart just when one or the other seriously needed support or TLC!) I’m okay with post-series Heaven fics as well as canon fix-its/completely ignoring the finale, and I like exploring both human!Cas as endgame or Cas keeping/getting his full angelic grace back (which is a slight preference to me, as he repeatedly seemed to genuinely value/want to be an angel? But exploring all possibilities in fic is cool for me.)
I’m a sucker for Castiel Whump/hurt!Cas in general, so long as the author remembers Cas is a bad ass and not just a baby in a trenchcoat. If he’s going to suffer, I want him to suffer stoically until he just cannot keep up the facade any longer.
SPN-specific DNWs: mentions/implications of Wincest, past or present; extreme bashing/characterization of John and Mary Winchester, or Jimmy Nowak, as homophobic.
Group: Castiel/Dean Winchester Group: Castiel/Dean Winchester & Sam Winchester
Give me all the finale fix-it fics - no I’m still not over it, I’m still happy to read any new twist on how Cas got out of the Empty and got back together with Dean (and Sam). If Dean still dies early/ends up in Heaven, I’d like a story that explores what happens when one gets bored of peace-and-happiness-ever-after. (Yes, I’m a big fan of The Good Place and as such it makes me wonder if eternity with no conflict and everything you could ever want would just melt your brain and identity after a few millennia.) So what then?
I’m also stealing a Tumblr rant as a prompt I’d love to read, if you want to get into some good dirty smut:
ive had it up to here with fictional gays being like “i love you and if all i can ever have is that knowledge it’s enough for me” we need more “i have been struck down by horny insanity and i beg you to fuck me once. i’ve had three smirnoff ices and i’m gonna be crazy now. we can pretend it didn’t happen i don’t give a shit just gimme daddy’s blunt instrument” it’s more realistic [x]
Um so yeah. I’d love an au where, anywhere along the line when it’s been their/someone’s/the universe’s life on the life, Cas takes the initiative decides they’re gonna have crazy sex even if it’s just once before the end of the world/we die. But then, oops, we’ve survived, now we have to deal with it. ...Please?
For something different, maybe more romantic/fluffy, I’d really love a vacation/getaway story here, since they never really got anything like that of substance on the show. I want to see Cas take Dean somewhere beautiful and amazing in the world he’s never gotten to see before. Show him there’s more than just greasy diners and the landscape of America to enjoy and experience. If you want, they could stumble on a case/haunting/monster from another part of the world while they’re at it...but I just really want to see Dean having some mind-opening and expanding experiences beyond what’s he’s known and seen so far in life.
In specific with Cas/Dean + Sam, I love another tumblr idea I saw recently where Sam totally keeps bringing up the idea of “Sastiel” as a fun joke between him and Cas, and Cas plays along, and it drives Dean up the wall. Cas has to just keep re-assuring Dean that no, he doesn’t see Sam that way...but why does it bother Dean so much? A.k.a. Dean has to finally own up to the fact that it bothers him because he wants Cas to feel that way about him.
Castiel (Supernatural)
I just love Cas, period, end of story, he’s my One True Character of SPN. I love any stories that try to explore him more fully—be it his relationships in the past with other angels and being a BAMF commander/warrior of Heaven, or what specifically it is that keeps him so tied to the Winchesters. I love stories that feature his true-form in some fashion or try to dig into the alien/different nature of angels vs. humans.
Also, another Tumblr-musing-turned-prompt (I lost who posted it, sorry!) I'd love to see explored in a canon divergence fic focused on Cas. Specifically:
"I would have loved an arc for Cas (after he got his grace back) where he wanted to help people, like he was helped. Spending time in soup kitchens or healing people, and through that developing a sense of self purpose, leading to his grace replenishing unexpectedly. Sort of fulfilling the traditional angel role (as we know it nowadays) by replacing his faith in heaven/dean with faith in himself, to redefine himself as a protector of humanity instead of heaven's soldier."
Group: Castiel/Dean Winchester & Jimmy Novak Group: Castiel & Jimmy Novak
We know Cas carried a lot of guilt for what happened to Jimmy and his whole family. So I'm interested in a post-finale, canon-compliant (I guess?) fic where Cas tries to reconcile things with Jimmy in Heaven. Maybe Jimmy & Amelia were one of his first "projects" or test cases in trying to build a new and better Heaven with Jack? (And it's what he was so busy with while Dean was still alive.) Or, is it weird in Heaven with Cas and Jimmy looking so similar? Does Cas still fight doubts as to whether Dean really loves him, or just desires this body/form that isn’t his own?
Otherwise, I've been thinking about Endverse!Cas, who had lost his grace/powers as the angels have all left and abandoned humankind. What happened to/where is Jimmy in all of that? (If we go by the canon that Jimmy was not killed, nor went to Heaven, until the end of Season 5, when Lucifer blew up that vessel and Cas was resurrected by Chuck.) Are they now two "mortal men"/souls trapped sharing one body? Is that why Cas is so messed up/always seeking an escape through drugs and sex? (Besides of course Dean having changed so much.) This is one prompt where I don’t mind a very dark/not-so-happily-ever-after ending.
The Police
Angst, Character Development, Established Relationship, Getting Together, Humor, Interpersonal Drama, Smut
Group: Sting/Stewart Copeland
Yeah I’ll always request these two together even though I know it’s a long shot to find anyone else as obsessed about them as I am. Really anything at all whatsoever would make me happy for this ship: Reunion Tour-era fic, early punk days before they grew successful, soulmate AUs...
I’d also love a spooky story where they’re on tour/on the road somewhere and end up in a haunted hotel. Or their tour bus/van breaks down in the middle of nowhere and they have to seek shelter in an abandoned house or farm or something...and supernatural weirdness ends up affecting them or bringing them together.
If you want to go the crack route: it wasn’t enough for Miles to take them all around the world to tour in “exotic” locations back in the day. He’s arranged for them now to go on the ultimate tour...of outer space and alien worlds.
Crossover Fandom
Action/Adventure, Character Development, Interpersonal Drama, Angst, Canon-Style Plot - Freeform, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery/Procedural
Group: Abe Morgan (Forever TV) & John Munch (L&O: SVU)
I’ve had a long running headcanon that these two could have been friends back in their respective 60s/early 70s hippie days. I’d love either a story set back then, “pre-canon”, or them running into each other in NYC later in life. Munch ending up in Abe’s antique shop, for instance, while on an investigation?
Group: Dean Winchester (Supernatural) & Ezekiel Stone (Brimstone) Group: Castiel (Supernatural) & Ezekiel Stone (Brimstone)
I’m fascinated by the idea of crossing over these two canons. Even if there’s some conflict in their approach to Hell/Lucifer/demons, there’s still a lot in common. Dean & Ezekiel having both put in their time in Hell and being demon hunters, for instance, and their complicated relationships with (fallen) angels. I’d love to see them bonding over their experiences (Maybe they even meet in Hell? Time DOES work differently there…) Maybe somehow after Ezekiel completed his mission for the Devil, he did get his second chance at “life on Earth”…but the devil’s trick is that it’s not HIS Earth, it’s in a different dimension (Supernatural’s). I’m also curious how Ezekiel might respond to Castiel as an angel–perhaps he mistakes Cas for a demon at first, with his powers, but then they realize they are in fact hunting the same demon? Cas is stuck in an alternative dimension and recognizes Ezekiel as a similar soul to Dean’s, and seeks out his help?
Basically I’d love some kind of casefic/demon hunt here, with the characters bonding over their shared/similar past traumas, taking care of each other when/if injured on a hunt, and/or perhaps helping them sort out their complicated feelings for another (ie, background Cas/Dean and/or Zeke/the Devil are TOTALLY welcome here, as I ship both of those ships.)
Law & Order: SVU
Group: John Munch/Odafin "Fin" Tutuola
Character Development, Established Relationship, Humor, Getting Together, Interpersonal Drama, Canon-Style Plot - Freeform, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Mystery/Procedural, Slice of Life, AU-Genre shift
Munch/Fin is one of my eternal OTPs so I’m always happy to see something new featuring them! I’m always good for procedural/case-fics. And this is one request where I’d love to read some AU-Genre or setting shift, reimagining the two in some other situations besides police work. I’ve always loved the idea of John hosting a conspiracy/weird news radio show or podcast, and Fin as someone completely skeptical but who gets wrapped up in one of John’s mysteries. Or John as the owner of a bar somewhere that Fin is one of his regulars, and over time their friendship develops/deepens into something more.
Supernatural RPF
Misha Collins/Jensen Ackles Established Relationship, Getting Together, Smut, Fluff, Slice of Life, Humor
It’s odd for me to be into an actor RPF fandom (I usually only fall for music/band-related ones), but what can I say...these two just make it almost impossible not to see the possibilities!
I was thinking I’d love something set post-Supernatural...their first time seeing each other again after a long time apart? (What with the show ending, covid, Misha’s surgery, etc etc.) Could be at a convention or maybe they get to go off on a getaway together somewhere private/romantic and it’s...kind of tense and maybe nervous/angsty at first? Like with doubts about whether they can/should go back to the way things were before.
Or: putting tin-hatty speculation about the “secret/real identity” of Alma Perpetua aside, I love their poetry and I’d love any “Cockles” fic using one of their poems as inspiration.

This should be a nightmare.
