if you loved episode 3 of tlou you really should listen to the official podcast with troy baker, craig mazin and neil druckmann because there’s SO much! here’s some of my favorite things said on the podcast:
- joel stacking rocks was to show that he missed and mourned tess. in that moment he was saying “i’m sorry, i blew it, i lost you.”
- in the beginning of the episode ellie told joel tess’ death wasn’t her fault but deep down she does feel like it was her fault.
- ellie admires joel because he protected her multiple times and as a child she has a desire for a parental figure to protect her.
- frank realized bill was gay pretty much as soon as he got out of the hole and saw how bill was looking at him. bill’s taking in how handsome frank is and “frank’s brain is incredibly attuned to that.” that’s why frank was smiling.
- frank realized bill was gay fast, but he realized he wanted bill when bill was playing the piano and singing linda ronstadt.
- it took them a while to find long long time by linda ronstadt but they always intended the song for bill to sing to be about a long love that was forever unrequited. “it was very important that the lyrics were someone saying ‘everyone tells me that it’s okay, that love will find me [...],’ no it doesn’t, no it’s not, and the person that i long for from afar - i’m gonna love them basically forever in the most unrequited manner.”
- it was important that frank immediately knew bill’s sexuality because frank SAW bill, because bill had completely buried his sexuality but frank saw through him.
- frank originally was trying to see what he could get out of bill (like a free lunch) but the more time they spent together, the more he went “oh, this is a beautiful person.”
- “there is two ways of loving things. frank wants to love outwards - he is sun, he is light. he wants to make things beautiful around him, he wants to care for bill, he wants to revitalize the streets so it’s not just this mausoleum bill lives in, and he wants to have friends. he wants to share what they have. and bill wants to put an electrified fence around them that is guarded by an additional layer of flame-throwing gas pipes and no one can show up ever because he must protect frank from the world... and as it turns out, both of those loved are required but one of those loves is likely to give you in trouble more than the other.”
- when frank put his finger on the furniture piece and saw how dusty it was, he realized what his purpose could be in bill’s life. bill can protect them, but frank can nurture their home.
- when bill apologizes to frank for growing old fast, it’s because he’s afraid of frank being left alone. “look at this beautiful man and the beautiful things that he does, and what is bill’s contribution? bill doesn’t grow strawberries. bill’s contribution is to keep frank alive. but bill is already afraid that he’s going to fail and that is a fear that joel has because he has that fear through experience [of losing his daughter.]“
- bill and joel understand each other and that they’re purpose is to protect others. they don’t care about their own lives.
- on their last day together, bill decided very early that he was going to die as well.
- the gun that ellie takes belonged to frank.
- that letter bill wrote reminded joel that he failed to protect both sarah and tess. the letter underscores for him that no matter how hard he tries, he can’t protect the people that he cares about. but now he has ellie to protect.

Tumblr media
tags/warnings (18+ MDNI): ANGST, lots of fire imagery? (not sure where it came from but we’re rolling with it), trauma (discussions of canon events. i.e joel’s been dealt a pretty shitty hand), feelings of betrayal, hurt/comfort, fluff at the end because i’m not a monster, grief.
summary: (joel miller x f!reader) joel miller is good at a long of things, but opening up is not one of them
word count: 1.1k
series masterlist
A/N: this is the first official installment of my new series mixtape! i really hope you enjoy, i almost made this chapter smutty but when i checked the word count it was 1111 and the angel number was just too good to pass up.
your mental health is more important than reading a fic, please take care of yourself and skip this one if any of the warnings are triggering to you <3
PLUS a big huge massive thank you to @pedgeitopascal for 1.) being the best and 2.) letting me rant and rave to her about this fic
Tumblr media
pull the plug, make it painless
i don’t want a violent end
don’t say that you’ll always love me,
‘cause you know i’d bleed myself dry for you over and over again
Things were getting better. They were. The three of them stitched and mended together by fate, probably trauma, and love; a family.
Sometimes, though, there were things that slipped through the cracks of the mosaic they’d built. Sometimes years of unexamined pain boiled up and over, burning whatever and whomever it touched.
It wasn’t that Joel’s intentions were to shut everyone out. No, he’d gone so long without the comfort of someone to confide in that it was hard to express the burning pit of affliction that seemed to radiate in his very being. Sarah. Tess. Tommy. Ellie. You. Everyone he’d cared about, everyone he felt he’d failed, occupied the inferno.
He wanted to let you in, needed to, and he was trying but some fires burn unbidden.
That’s how he ended up here, standing across from you in your shared living room. His hands itched to hold you, to find purchase on your skin, comfort you. Comfort you from what, though? From him? The feeling of being the cause of your tear-stained face and bloodshot eyes feeding the flames, fueling that nagging feeling that he was falling short.
“I can’t,” you look up at him, voice quiet and tired. “I can’t sit here and watch you detach from yourself, from me, from us. I love you, I love you so much that my soul aches for you. I can’t breathe when you're around and I can’t breathe when you’re not.”
“Please, Joel.” eyes filled with pleading tears, the soaked sleeve of your sweater trying to wipe them away but the tears still flow, and the ache still gnaws away. “Fuck, you have to let me in. You’re always telling me that you can't lose me but I can’t lose you either.”
He’d never seen you seem so small, so defeated, “I don’t wanna hurt you, angel.”
The look on your face said it all, the bright smile you normally wore had been replaced by a twisted expression of heartache and longing. Your eyes were puffy, brows furrowed as you drew in a shaky breath, “You know what hurts? What feels like you’ve taken a knife and twisted it in my stomach?” the words taste bitter on your tongue, getting caught in your throat and mangled by emotion, “The fact that despite everything we’ve been through together, it never feels like you fully trust me.”
“Darlin’,” his voice low, thick with emotion, “I’m just afraid that you won’t look at me the same way. What if I say somethin’ and it scares you away? I can’t risk you.”
Those eyes he loves so much are big and watery, betraying the notion of every inch of your body longing to be close to his.  “Let me have a say, let me decide what I can handle. Please just quit shutting me out, I can’t handle that.”
Finally, he finds himself closing the gap between them, bridging what felt like miles in two steps as he takes a seat on the threadbare couch that the three of you had patched up with various fabrics over the years.
He takes your hand in his, “I’m so sorry. I’m sorry for bein’ cold, bein’ distant, for shuttin’ you out.” his grief weighs heavy on his face, taking a deep breath, and rubbing a calloused hand over his face, steeling himself, “My life has been a lot of things. It’s been scary, lonely, everything but easy. I’ve done things I’m not proud of, I’ve dealt as much pain as I’ve been given.”
As if you can see him withdrawing back into himself, you place a hand on his cheek, “Come back to me. Don’t wander off so far into that head of yours that I can’t reach you, please.”
He shakes his head, his body tense. You can see the gears turning, the fire of panic fighting with the fear of vulnerability, the idea of laying everything out on the table for you to see. He knows, he knows that you would never do anything to hurt him. You’ve been through far too much yourself to pick apart the dirty details of his past. The only reasons he has for closing off are internal, every fiber of his being putting up shutters to lock his grief away from your gentle touch. Even now when he looks over at you, those big beautiful eyes opening themselves up for him, warm and inviting if he would just let himself fall.
“When I lost Sarah, it was like a part of me broke. There’s this hole in my heart, a void that I can’t fill. I-,” his voice shakes, clearing his throat as tears fill his brown eyes. “Nothin’ takes the hurt away, I can’t get ‘er back”
You suck in a shaky breath, in all the time you’ve been with Joel, he’d never broken down like this. Never let his walls down enough for you to see that pain, the raging ache that consumed him. “Nothing I can do or say will bring her back, I would do anything to take that pain away.” wiping away his tears as they fall, “You have to let her live on through you. The people we were lucky enough to know, the people that we love are never truly gone. From all you’ve told me about her, she wouldn’t want you to live a life plagued with guilt.”
His features soften at her words, his breath evening out, the fire slowly dissipating. It was as though you were the one person that dared to brave the chaos he was sure surrounded him. Your eyes search his, willing him to see that you were right there, that you would always be there.
He hesitates for a moment, eyes still weary as exhales a breath he didn’t know he was holding. “I never stopped lovin’ her. I never will. She’d want me to be happy, live for somethin’ more than myself.”
He reaches out, cupping your soft cheek as you lean into his touch. “Thank you,” your voice is barely above a whisper, “for letting me in.”
“I’ve never been the best at openin’ up, but with you,” he pauses for a moment, an almost peaceful expression painting his face as he looks at you, the unbearable weight in his heart shrinking down and breathing you in. “with you, I guess I was just so afraid of losin’ you that I didn’t realize I was the one pushin’ you away. I need you to stay.”
“I love you.” a soft smile tugs at your lips, placing your hand gently over his larger one cupping your cheek.
A small sigh of relief escapes his lips, leaning forward slightly and pressing his lips on your forehead,
“I love you too, darlin’.”

Once upon a time, Joel had told Lizzie about what being on a red life is like. He had just gotten a life from Scar, newly yellow, and she had gone to congratulate him and also to sort of…prepare herself. Lizzie wasn’t experienced in how this world worked, and she wanted to know as much as she could to prepare.
“It’s very….it feels hollow.” Joel had explained as they sat in his bridge house. “You feel empty and alone. Usually you’ve died angry and it sort of…sticks? It’s what drives you.”
“What if I don’t die angry? What if it’s fear?” Lizzie had asked. “Then paranoia would drive me, right?”
Joel just shrugged. “Might do. Would explain how jumpy Jimmy was last time.”
Lizzie expected to die afraid. She was afraid all the time. She surrounded herself with dogs and friends and forts to protect herself. When she died, she expected to be terrified.
And then Cleo joined with Scott and Pearl because of what Big B had done. Big B is why she went red and her sympathy for the boogeyman curse is what drove Cleo away. And the beginnings of resentment started stirring. She kept Big B around. Sure. She likes having allies. Doesn’t mean she can’t hate him for destroying her alliance because he wanted to be selfish and sneaky about the curse. It’s fine.
And then Joel trapped her mushroom house, and when she accidentally blew him up, she thought she was dying. She was shaking with fear, and then she was dying. Joel came back, red again, and buried an axe in her chest, and her last thoughts were ‘What have I ever done to deserve this?’
The mushroom house and the walls were exploded. She’d lost home after home and nowhere was safe. Jimmy dies to her trap and it’s his own fault, really. But he’s red and he hates her for it (what, his own stupid mistakes?) and he lures her to his house.
When she hears him laugh as she burns alive, there is nothing but a seething hate in her heart. She didn’t deserve this.
How dare he.
And so begins her life as red. Lizzie travels back to the Shadow Tower to pick up some gear at least. Everything else she owned has burned, except for the little stashes she’s hidden across the server. Ren and Big B are there, both green, and they treat her like a threat and they mock her with words of goodwill, saying that they’ll be with her in her heart.
Lizzie did not ask for a life and no one offered. Somehow she feels betrayed. Etho will negotiate a life from Scar for Bdubs, Pearl will give limitless lives to Scott, Scott gives a life to Cleo. But somehow Lizzie isn’t worth the effort. Somehow, she isn’t valued to her allies.
Did Ren lie when he had sworn his loyalty to her? Was he just taking advantage of an opportunity to get a life out of her? Playing on her pity and her sympathy. He’d sworn he was with her until the end of them both and left her high and dry once she happened to get unlucky enough to be murdered.
Lizzie understands with Joel meant about being red. She binds a book and scrawls names into it.
Big B, for the start of her downfall
Jimmy, for getting her to this state
Cleo, for betrayal
Joel, for several counts of attempted murder and one successful
The anger drives you, when you’re red. Nothing else matters because everything else is gone besides the final traces of anger you felt at death.
Lizzie had lost everything but that anger. She lost her home, she lost her allies, she lost her dogs, she lost even her things to the lava. Nothing was safe and nothing was sacred but she didn’t care. Lizzie had nothing left to lose but her own life (and maybe once she got her revenge, losing that life would be….acceptable).
When she killed Big B, she smiled for the first time since her death. When Jimmy died, she cursed that she wasn’t the one to end him. That was the extent of her revenge.
Ren had given up his loyalty to her to be loyal to Martyn, and Cleo had left them all. Until she reunifies with Ren and everything is peachy fine and Lizzie doesn’t know what made her so unforgivable. It made her blood boil and she couldn’t stop imagining burying a sword into Cleo’s stomach.
Well, it was all the vengeance Lizzie was able to get. Cleo’s death had to be postponed because, well, it was a dangerous world and they wanted to establish a safe area for them all first. Joel….she would wait. Tensions were high. It wouldn’t end well for her. She would come up with a plan to end him.
She was trying to formulate a plan to get Joel dead (nudge him off a cliff maybe? push him into lava?) when she cut her ankle on a thorn of a flower that shouldn’t have been there. She felt sick and weak for a few moments and she turned to see Bdubs coming after her with an axe, yelling, panic in his eyes.
Everyone was shouting, everything was overwhelming.
She fired her rockets at Bdubs, but it didn’t stop him from attacking. She felt the stirrings of fear again, but mostly it was that anger, a how dare he, a what gives him the right, a I hope they kill him
Lizzie, to busy trying to defend herself, falls off a ledge. And in the moments before she breaks her neck on the stone below, she glares up at the face of her killer. He’s visibly afraid and it makes Lizzie hate him more.
Her last thoughts before death are ‘I didn’t deserve any of this’
They do kill Bdubs. It doesn’t make her feel better

Joel Miller x F!Reader: Sleepless Night
Tumblr media
(Fluff/Angst) (Age Difference)  (Warning: Details of smut included)
Joel sat down on one of the chairs on his porch, clutching his guitar in one hand, and coffee in the other in his well-known owl mug. Letting out a heavy sigh, with tired eyes and set the guitar by his feet, taking a sip from his drink. He had struggled sleeping the past few nights due to the last patrol he had went on with [Y/N]. The memory of her getting jumped by runners and her cries for help traumatised him. Thanks to him, he saved her life. It wasn’t the first time he had saved her or risked his life to keep her safe, he was determined to protect her. Since that day, he’s been avoiding her. He had never spoken to her openly about his past, and he knows if these feelings keep growing, he would regret not talking sooner.
He remembered when she had arrived at Jackson a year and a half ago, being only 25 and having no family, she found it hard adjusting to new people, new faces. After a few months, she settled right in, getting to know Ellie and Dina and helping out on patrols with them every now and then, and having a brotherly-sisterly bond with Tommy. He took her in to his house, she didn’t know anybody and Joel was the first person she had met, feeling he was trustworthy.
Staring at the dark liquid he swirled it around in circles not noticing you had went looking for him, she stood in the doorway of the front door, her hand on the doorframe.
“Joel?” Her quiet tone was like music to his ears. Jackson was peaceful, most of the area was asleep, snow covered the ground like a blanket. He jumped a little at her presence, but relaxed realising it who it was.
“Evenin’.” He says, setting his almost empty mug of coffee on the small wooden table, which was now cold from the length of time he was lost in his thoughts. His voice was rough, feeling exhausted from the lack of rest.
“Can’t sleep?” She asked, closing the door behind her, keeping quiet as possible not to wake up the nearby neighbours and took a seat beside him. He shook his head at the question. “No.”
She pulled her jacket closer around her body and crossed her leg over the other. Joel shifted in his seat a little, clearing his throat. She looked over at him, watching the wind go through his soft, silver hair. His heart skipped a beat, feeling her eyes scanning him, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“I never said this before but,” She started, moving her hair from her face. “Thank you, for saving my ass again.” He turned his head, looking over at her, he had missed that smile, he had missed her laughter when they would patrol and she’d throw snowballs at him. Seeing her around Jackson, having that friendship with Ellie and Dina, offering to take dangerous patrol areas to keep the town safe. Risking her life multiple times to save others. The sound of her name or the sound of his name being spoken by her, feeling a sense of new-found love and happiness, something he missed experiencing a long time ago.
“S’alright darlin’.” He gave her a half smile, his hazel eyes filled with fear, and pain, he masked it well and she noticed. He couldn’t tear his eyes away from her, the way her eyelashes fluttered, or when her nose would scrunch up when it was cold, or when they would sit by the fireplace while he strummed his guitar.
“Um, Joel?” She looked at her lap and fiddled with her fingers. He sat up in his chair, his hands resting on his thighs. “Is everything okay? I haven’t .. seen you, for a while.” Her words had a nervous feeling to it. He exhaled heavily. He had to tell her what was going on in his mind, the thought of her blaming herself for his avoidance was already worrying him. He was the only one she trusted with anything, especially from the start. Every night, if she needed his comfort, his in particular, he would be there for her, he’d make coffee for her and sit with her and let her vent to him about anything that bothered her. He never wants her to feel alone, and during that time of knowing her, he fell in love, and he knew he was, he kept it inside, fear of losing her, like he had lost Sarah and Tess.
“Let’s go inside and talk this out.” He stood up, taking his guitar gently in his hand and the empty mug, guiding her back in the house. The heat from the lit fireplace warmed up the room. Kicking off his shoes, he set the guitar next to the couch, and went to the kitchen to make the coffee, keeping up the tradition. She sat on the couch and patiently waited for him to return, admiring the large bookcases. Sounds of spoons clinking together and the shuffling of his feet across the floor made her smile.
Joel returned, holding two mugs of hot coffee and placing them on coasters on the small coffee table. Her eyes watched his every move, thanking him for the drink, smiling to herself, he remembered to put some cinnamon in her drink, that being her favourite. The curtains were shut and there was silence between the both of them, the fire was the only sound in the room. She sat cross-legged and turned her body to face his, holding the mug in her hands tightly warming up her cold fingertips, waiting for him to explain.
He sat there for a while, figuring out how to explain his behaviour to her, the guilt inside of him eating him away. A sad expression washed across his face. She frowned and looked down at her drink.
He set his mug on the coaster again, letting out a sigh and looking over at her. He felt her eyes burning into him, as if they were looking into his soul. “That day, when the infected attacked you,” He always found it hard expressing his true feelings when it came to people he cared deeply about, afraid that more loss and more pain would return. She listened to him, she really listened, understanding every word he was saying. “watching you struggle and cry, it-, it terrified me. Terrified of what would happen if, I hadn’t stopped it.” A glistened look covered his eyes, he kept his composure, trying to stop himself from breaking down.
She set her mug beside his, taking in what he had just told her. As he continued, “I’ve had, a great deal of loss, fighting to survive all these years, but, also fighting to protect you,” He rubbed his bearded chin with his hand. “I don’t want those things, out there, to turn you into one of them.” He pointed to the window, gesturing to outside. His thick Texan accent growing deeper, the difficulty expressing this made his stomach flutter.
She swallowed the lump in her throat, feeling touched by his words and realising, she meant more to him than he let on. She was patient with him, knowing he was closed off, always kept to himself, no matter the situation. He was more worried about the feelings and well-being of others than his own.
“But, why me?” She asked softly, he knew she appreciated everything he’s done and still doing for her and for her safety. Her actions of being there for him when he needed her was enough proof. Actions speak louder than words. His brows furrowed at her question. Keeping her eyes down, away from looking into his eyes.
“You go through near-death experiences when it’s us together, you’ve slain multiple clickers and bloaters, you’re so hell-bent on keeping me as close as possible to you. There are other people who need more protection than I do.” She felt guilty for causing him to put himself through horrible situations, feeling like she was forcing him to look after her. “I just, feel like a burden.” She bit her lip, worried at his response.
“Look at me,” He whispered in a raspy tone. When she refused to look into his eyes, he spoke once again. “Darlin’.” That little pet name was a little secret that only they knew about. He reached over, tucking hair behind her ear and turning her face to look at him, a hand resting on her cheek. His large, warm, rough hands felt like a security blanket to her. All the anxiety and stress he felt, washed away when his skin came into contact with hers.
“You ain’t ever been a burden.” His eyes stared into hers, all he ever wanted to do was love her, make her feel special. His body shifted position. She had no trouble opening up to him in the past, he knew her like the back of his hand, he knew about her family, her childhood, the trauma she experienced, he felt deeply connected with her, they both had experienced loss.
There have been times where he’s had thoughts of making love to her, just to hold her close to his body, being as gentle as possible. The dream of pushing her against the wall, both their hands hungrily grabbing at each others clothes to tear them away. Her pushing him closer to press his hard-on against her core, to feel how much he wanted her. Grabbing at her thighs as she’d grind herself against him, her soaked panties staining his jeans. Curiosity being a main factor, wishing to know what she tasted like and what he tasted like between the sheets. To graze his lips across her skin, to feel her body tense up underneath him when hitting her high, her nails digging into his skin as he pushed in and out of her. He longed to hear her soft moans, her calling his name as he made her his own, tangling fingers through her hair. He never wanted to let her go. She had never laid with a man before, as she had told him subtly in the past. She had been having those thoughts and feelings towards him just as much as he did. Her having no experience with sex in general speak, in her mind, she knew exactly what she would do.
He took her face in his hands, rubbing her cheek with his thumb, he didn’t like feeling vulnerable, but it was overpowering, he wanted to kiss her, right there, right now. She slowly moved her position and kneeled in front of him, his hands sticking to her like glue. She moved little bit closer.
“You promise?” She whispered, his skin covered in goosebumps, feeling the closeness of their faces just inches apart. Her lips hovering over his.
“Yes.” He replied. She was now in a crawling position, her hands finding their way into his lap then moving them to his grey t-shirt, running her hands up his chest and finally resting them on his shoulders. His breath was shaky, waiting for it to finally happen.
And there it was, his lips brushed against hers, his facial hair tickling her mouth. It was slow and innocent at first, his body tensed but relaxed, both getting used to what was happening in the moment. He pulled back for a moment, feeling a little embarrassed at the sudden urge. His eyes flickered from her eyes to her lips. Licking his own, wanting to taste her fully, she wrapped her arms around his neck, leaning her body weight on his chest, his arms snaked their way around her waist, holding her tight, worried if he let go, she would disappear. She let out a slight giggle, leaving him with a comforted feeling that she wasn’t rejecting him.
“Kiss me again, cowboy.” The use of the word ‘cowboy’ surged through his veins, kissing her once again, his tongue diving in taking dominance. His grunts and her moans against the kiss was too much to bare. Feeling beads of sweat on his forehead and her heavy panting, he pulled back and looked once again in her eyes.
“Take me.” She ran her fingers across his lips, his mouth curving at the side with a smile.
“You sure?” His fingers ran up and down her sides.
“Show me what you’ve got.” Replying as she kissed the corner of his mouth.
That burning feeling of lust, desire and attraction possessed them. Feeling a sense of love in his heart, he felt whole.

You Never Notice
Sykkuno x Reader (Female)
Warnings: None
Genre: Fluff
Summary: The center of someone’s world is never aware of their importance even when everyone else is in the know. People are hard to understand, no denying, but if we all spilled our truth like how Y/N admitted her feelings to Sykkuno, mutual understanding would be achieved a lot more easily. JK, she needed an eternity and maybe a thousand pushes. What’s important is the result though, right?
Requested by Anon. You are my first Sykkuno request and I wish I could thank you with a tag. Instead, I’m gonna thank you with a fic in which I put my all. Thank you for the request, hope the final product doesn’t let you down. 🥰
Here we go again. Sykkuno’s love life is brought up. This time it’s more frustrating cause I can’t shout how wrong he is about himself and the effect he has on the people around him. He has no room to speak, he hasn’t experienced what I have - one of your best friends living in your head rent-free because you’re just that whipped by them. That’s right kids, some of us never grow past the middle school crushes - they are a constant for some. That can be a good or a bad thing, it completely depends on how you view it.
Currently, him and Rae are addressing some dating rumors that started spreading about them earlier this week while Felix, Sean and I are kicking each other’s butts in Party Animals. We’re not all playing together, actually, we were all playing different games when we hopped into the call and just grouped together after playing solo got boring. Rae and Sykkuno are playing Among Us on a random server, her being the only person who’s streaming right now. She said she just wanted to clear up the dating rumors cause they were annoying to see popping up on her feed on every social media platform she’s active on.
“It’s ridiculous, really. People just look for online personalities to put in imaginary relationships. Are they that bored? I know quarantine is getting to everyone, but damn“ Rae says, laughing a bit to take the edge off her words but I know she’s bothered by this ordeal more than she’s letting on. I know how much it bothers her when people ship random youtubers and streamers together, even when she’s not involved.
And I agree. Ever since I started streaming I’ve been shipped with my friends left and right. First Corpse, then Dave, Joel...you name them. It gets kinda gross cause these people are legit like siblings to me. Unlike Rae, though, I don’t waste my breath trying to clear those ‘talks of the net’ up. I don’t know if it’s for better of for worse that I remain silent on the issue when I’m involved but am willing to stand up for my friends when they find themselves in a similar situation. Some people think the reason I don’t share my thoughts is because the rumors are true, but the hint is most often taken, resulting in the ship ending. Well, that ship ending, there’s always a new one popping up. As Rae said, it’s ridiculous.
“Why does everyone think I am ever dating anyone? I’ve already commented on this: no one would date me.“ Sykkuno says through a sigh-like laugh.
“Why are you so sure?“ I blurt out without as much as a second thought
My eyes widen just a bit, just a bit. I’m not too surprised with myself. I am slowly losing control of my raging emotions and I’m afraid of what I’ll turn into when all my restraints snap. A mess, that’s the most likely answer.
“Well....“ Sykkuno trails off, clearly more than a little nervous, “I don’t have a girlfriend right now, and I haven’t had one in a while...Nor has a girl shown any interest to be more than friends with me in what feels like forever.“
“I’m sure you just don’t notice the hints girls drop. We can be pretty subtle.“ I try to sound as nonchalant as possible while I’m still in my panicked animal mode. And by animal I mean a cub. A scared cub that is now showing confidence but will run and hide right afterwards. I silently thank the universe that I’m not streaming right now. I can feel the heat on my neck and cheeks which is pure embarrassment and would have been more than evident on-camera.
“Yeah Y/N’s right, Sykkuno. Girls can be very subtle, but they will always let you know if they like you, even through the smallest of gestures. You gotta keep your eyes open.“ Rae backs me up reassuringly.
“Guys never notice anything.“ I say, rolling my eyes. I feel the pressure lessen thanks to Rae’s involvement in the conversation.
“That’s not true.“ Sean protests, “We pay close attention, especially to girls we are attracted to.“
“Yeah!“ Sykkuno pipes in again, “I’m pretty sure I would notice if a girl was dropping signals that she likes me.“
Now that stings. That legit makes me wince and cringe as though his voice delivered an actual physical hit to my chest and stomach. It’s really unpleasant, painful even.
“You never notice.“ There’s something about this triple opportunity - proving him wrong that he’d catch onto a girl’s signals; proving him wrong that girls aren’t attracted to him; coming clean about the biggest emotional struggle I’ve experienced in recent years; - that snaps my last emotional restraints. I will totally regret this later, but after the regret comes the relief which is 100% worth it.
“What?“ He sounds very puzzled. I can just about imagine him frowning as he tries to wrap his brain around something even I can’t wrap mine around.
“You say you’d notice a girl’s hints of attraction. OK.“ I nonchalantly throw Felix off the submarine in Party Animals while I keep talking, “Would you notice if a girl purposely doesn’t kill you in Among Us when she’s impostor? Or would you notice that a girl always sends you links to videos she finds funny? Or that she always shares music and movie recommendations with you and you only?“
Dead silence ensues. I feel like they have all glitched, considering Sean didn’t even try to put up a fight when I lifted him and threw him in the ocean as I previously did with Felix’s avatar.
Maybe I was a tad too specific and made the whole situation hit a little too close to home for me.
Sykkuno and I have become really close friends and we chat and play games regularly. As I mentioned, I give him movie and music recommendations and I only recently started acknowledging the fact that I’ve never killed him in Among Us. Natural instinct I guess. In fact, I feel the need for vengeance when he’s killed. I refuse to even vote for him unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Now that I think about it, it’s not his fault he has no clue. I just don’t know how to properly drop hints.
“Um...I mean, I guess I would notice but I’d never think they are that type of hints.“ He finally replies.
On point there, dear. On damn point.
“What does it take for you to be convinced that a girl is into you?“ Who cares that a bunch of people are about to witness this outpour? It’ll make it more real, yes, but it will also help me believe that it happened so I don’t try to crawl back to the point where return is an option. No return now. You’ve already passed two thirds of the way. The last one will set you and your mind free.
“The only way I can be sure is if she tells me, really.“ He sounds so nervous and shy, like he’s trying to draw as little attention as possible.
He doesn’t have to worry. I’m about to pull all the attention on me.
“Well in that case....you leave me no other choice.“ My screen displays me as the winner of this round of Party Animals - an easy one considering my friends are glitched in real life. “I like you, Sykkuno. I like you a lot. And I know you will see it from every context except the one its meant to be in so I’ll be even more head-on - I’ve liked you, as more than a friend for quite some time now, but buddy, you can be sooo oblivious sometimes. Anyway...“ Here’s that regret I was talking about, it’s already creeping in. “Don’t feel the need to say it back. I don’t wanna hear it if you don’t mean it. And Rae,“ I can’t help but laugh at the thought, “Sorry for making your chat go crazy. Peace!“
And I disconnect from the Discord call.
“See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?“ I say out loud, staring at my desktop. “The cat’s out of the bag and you can move on now.“
I push myself to get some work done in order to get my mind off the mess I’ve created. I’m afraid of thinking about it, I know I’ll get too upset to do anything with the rest of my day if I do.
Suddenly, just as I’m about to open my email, my phone chimes. My brain doesn’t bother to stop my arm from automatically reaching out and checking the notification. A message.
From Sykkuno.
~ I knew you didn’t suggest me ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ for no reason
Me ~ So...?
~ So, I’m not the only oblivious one here, Y/N
Me ~ Wait WHAT?
~ ‘Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist’?
Me ~ Oooohhhh...I see
It takes him a few seconds to reply, the bubble with the three bouncing dots popping up and disappearing a few times now. I just now feel my heart banging against the inside of my ribcage, my pulse echoing in my ears.
He did seem a little too eager for me to watch that movie...
~ So, movie date?
I laugh, wholeheartedly and honestly. Genuine joy running through my veins.
Me ~ So it is.
The grin that is now decorating my features promises to stay there for the rest of the day. I bite my bottom lip at the thought that pops into my head.
Me ~ Phew, I can stop sparing you in Among Us from now on
He sends me three cry-laughing emojis in return, but I don’t need those. I can just imagine him laughing as he usually does with one hand covering his mouth. And here I thought my grin couldn’t grow wider.
Imagining him happy makes me smile. His happiness makes me happy. He makes me happy.
Even better...
I think the feeling’s mutual.

-💕
I literally have it so bad for this idiot. I can’t 😭
Tumblr media
Libby avoided Joel for the next few days. She knew his schedule well enough to know when she could be somewhere where he couldn’t. He had texted her at least 10 times, and though it broke her heart she couldn’t bring herself to answer him. She loved Joel, more than she probably should. And she couldn’t believe she had done what she did. It had been one of the greatest moments of her life if she was being honest, but it had altered their friendship forever. And in her mind, if it didn’t work out, she would lose him.
Heather told her that she needed to talk to him and she wouldn’t continue to cover for her when he came looking for her. She spent most nights curled in bed, crying when she thought about him. His eyes and his smile and what he must think of her. She could feel him slipping right through her fingers, and all she had to do was open up to him and she couldn’t do it.
Jake and Heather sat on either side of Joel, as Heather gave his back a gentle pat. He was leaned forward, head in his hands, very distressed.
“I don’t know what to do.” He said sadly. Jake and Heather made eye contact over Joel’s head, and Jake shrugged.
“Joel. She’s just scared. She had a lot of feeling going on in her head right now and she’s probably really overwhelmed.”
“Scared about what?” He asked exasperatedly, turning to look at her “I think I’ve made it pretty clear how I feel about her. What else can I do?”
“I don’t think it’s that man.” Jake said shaking his head “Girls just overthink things like this. While your thinking ‘I’m ready to take the next step’ while she’s probably still worried about how she looked while it was happening.” Heather rolled her eyes and shot him a nasty look over Joel’s shoulder before she spoke.
“Jake shut up. She’s just scared Joel. You guys have been friends for so long, she’s just afraid of losing you. That’s all.”
“Which is dumb.” Jake interjected before she could continue “She knows Beezer would never fuck her over. She should be glad she lost it to him and some other asshole who doesn’t care about her.”
“Jake. Shut up.”
“I’m just saying. She should at least talk to the guy and explain why she went MIA on him.”
“Jake. SHUT UP.”
“Okay okay sorry.” He held his hands up and turned his attention back to Joel “Come on buddy. Let’s go work out or something. Go talk to your girl.” He said looking at Heather as Joel stood and slouched behind him. Heather made the trek to the apartment and was surprised to find Libby in the living room, staring at the wall. She looked over and Heather’s heart broke. She had obviously been crying for some time, her eyes were red and swollen and her cheeks were blotchy. She had deep purple circles under her eyes and she just looked sad.
“Libby.” She sat next to her and Libby fell into her arms with a choked sob.
“He probably hates me.” She cried, big fat tears sliding down her cheeks, and soaking Heather’s shirt.
“Joel could never hate you. Ever. He could probably hate me but not you. What is going on with you Libby?”
“I don’t know!” She cried hands in the air. Heather was alarmed. She had never seen Libby this way before. She was so beside herself she was shaking and crying almost uncontrollably.
“He’s going to change his mind Heather. And then what? He’ll find someone else and get drafted and then I’ll -“
“Whoa! Calm down!” Heather said holding up her hands to force libby to stop talking. She took a shuddering breath and rubbed under her eyes.
“We can’t talk about this right now. You need to go and calm down, take a nap or something and then we’ll talk. Okay?”
Libby nodded and pulled herself up off the sofa, hurrying to her room and closing the door. Heather blinked back tears of her own, and covered her mouth with her hand. She pulled her phone out once she saw Libby’s bedroom light turn off, to text Joel.
Please come over here I’m so worried and she needs you.
Before she even put the phone back in her pocket he had answered.
On my way.
Joel stepped quietly into the apartment, closing the door behind him. He face and ears were red from cold and he was huffing and puffing.
“Did you run here?” Heather asked frowning at him. He stood awkwardly for a moment before he averted his eyes.
“Uh. No?”
“She’s in her room. Be gentle with her Joel. She’s so upset.”
“I’ve always been gentle with Libby.”
Joel sidestepped her and headed to Libby’s room, opening and closing the door quietly. She was curled on her bed, tv playing low in the background. Her eyes were closed but they slid slowly open when she heard him enter the room. She closed them again, a tear slipping out of her eye and running across her nose and down the other side of her cheek. He sat down gently next to her, and then laid beside her.
“Libby.” He whispered gently, reaching an arm out. She tucked herself into his chest, silent tears staining his shirt.
“I’m so sorry.” She whispered, clutching a fist full of his shirt. Her face was pushed up into his neck, and even though he was highly upset about the whole thing, he melted right into her like putty.
“Libby. There’s no reason to be sorry. Just talk to me please.” He rubbed her back soothingly and her crying started to subside.
“Were you not ready?” He asked softly. He didn’t really want to hear the answer, for fear she would say no, and he feel like a terrible person. Like he took something from her he shouldn’t have. But she shook her head.
“Your going to leave me.” She whispered. She sounded terrified, as she looked up at him with a tear stained face.
“What? No I’m not.”
“Your going to get drafted and your going to meet someone wherever you end up, and you’ll leave me.” Another tear fell from her eyes and Joel felt his heart sink down into his stomach.
“Listen to me.” He propped himself up on a pillow so he could see her properly. She looked genuinely scared, more than she had been Christmas Eve when her dad had approached the subject.
“Even if I do get drafted, which we don’t even know will happen yet, we can work it out somehow. Even if this whole thing never happened, I could never just go somewhere and not see you. Your my best friend Lib.” He said softly “And I’d like if you were my girlfriend, but if you don’t want to be then that’s fine too. We can go as slow or as fast as you want to. But you gotta talk to me about this stuff. I can’t fix what I don’t know.”
“You want me to be your girlfriend?” She squeaked, eyes moving up his face to meet his.
He nodded and pushed a strand of hair off her cheek, before he smiled “More than you know.”
She gave him a real smile before she let her head come to rest on his chest. Her tears had stopped and she looked more at ease. She closed her eyes as she listened to his heart beat through his hoodie. There were no words spoken for a while, just soft breathing and Joel’s fingers stroking up and down her spine. It had started to get dark out, and Joel had early practice. She didn’t want him to leave.
“Do you want me to stay?” He asked running a hand through her hair.
“I do but if you have to go It’s fine.”
“I mean I don’t have to. I have practice in the morning but then nothing the rest of the day. You could always come with me?” She stared at him for a moment and then nodded.
“We never did get to do anything for our birthday.”
“Okay it’s a date.” He smiled at her, a real one with teeth and stood to turn the light off.
She had pulled the blanket down and pulled it up over her legs. He flipped the light off and slipped into bed next to her. He sighed and stared at the ceiling hands resting on his stomach before he turned his head to her. She was on her side staring at him, hands resting under her face. He turned on his side and hesitantly reached for her. She scooted forward allowing him to wrap his long arms around her, and she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding in. She rested her face in the crook of his neck, breathing him in and closing her eyes. If it had been offered to her she would have stayed in that moment with him forever. After a few moment she pulled back to look up at him, threading her fingers through his hair.
“ Libby I-“
“Don’t.” She said shaking his head “Don’t say anything.”
Her breath hitched in her throat as he tipped her head up, nose brushing hers before he kissed her very slowly, fingers knotting through her hair.
She gripped the front of his T-shirt, hands balling the fabric up. She wasn’t sure why she felt this swooping sensation in her stomach, it wasn’t like she hadn’t kissed Joel before. But this was different. He was sweet and gentle and she knew right then and there that she was totally in love with him. He rolled so he was hovering over her, lips still moving sweetly against hers. She felt his tongue sweep across her bottom lip, and she obliged opening her mouth. She felt a warmth pool in her stomach as she felt his fingertips brush her skin where her shirt had ridden up. She pulled at the zipper of his sweatshirt and tugged it down so he could shrug out of it, tossing it aside.
“Are you sure this is okay?” He asked pulling away from her.
“Yes.”
He leaned back down to kiss her, and all that mattered in that moment was them.
********
Things leveled out after that. Jake and Heather continued dating, although neither of them really knew how. Eventually they figured it out and for the first time in a long time, Heather had a boyfriend. She was over the moon. She and Libby spent a lot of time giggling about boys, and telling secrets that they hadn’t been able to before.
Jake and Joel started tearing it up, becoming extremely successful on the ice. Libby and Joel were still keeping it from their parents, who would be visiting in a few weeks. But right now they were snuggled together in his bed in his dorm watching a movie. They jumped when the door banged open and Jake burst through it.
“Leave room for Jesus.” He said pointing ask them, before doing a small twirl.
“What the hell are you doing?” Joel said frowning at him. But then Libby noticed what he was wearing.
“What the -“
“Ehhhhh?” He asked moving his hands up and down to showcase his suit “Ehhhh?”
“What are you wearing?” Joel asked sitting up straighter, fighting back a smile.
“Taking a leaf out of your book Romeo. I’m taking Heather out on a grownup date tonight to that new Italian place downtown.”
“Heather hates Italian food.” Libby said straightfaced.
Jake sputtered for a moment, before he turned on his heel and yelled “GODDMANIT!” Before slamming the door behind him and stomping down the hall. Joel turned to her.
“Does she really?”
“I have no idea.” She replied giggling. He laughed and wrapped her back up in his arms.
“Speaking of dates.” He said from somewhere above her “When do you want to go on one.”
She shrugged “You let me know when and I’ll be there.” He smiled.
“Deal.”
*********
“Moms!” Libby said jumping from her seat by the glass to give a hug to both hers and Joel’s mom. It was so good to see them, especially since the last time she saw them she had been heartbroken about Joel. She had just let go when she felt another body pushing against hers.
“Stop monopolizing the moms Libby, get out of the way!” Heather pushed her away and pulled them both into a hug as well.
“How are you girls?” Libby’s mom asked. Heather was still hugging her, eyes closed as Libby’s mom rubbed her back.
“We’re good, Heather has a boyfriend.” Libby blurted out, causing Heather to turn to her cheeks red.
“Boyfriend?” Joel’s mom said looking around “Who?”
“Jake!” Libby said pointing at the ice, just as Jake tripped and went flying across it knocking Joel down.
“Oh my god.” Heather said covering her eyes as they all laughed.
“And what about you?” Joel’s mom asked turning to her, exchanging a glance with her own mom.
“What about me?” Libby said nervously looking at Heather, who was shaking her head.
“I didn’t say anything I swear.” Heather mumbled looking between the three of them. They were interrupted by Joel himself banging on the glass and pointing at Libby.
“Hey! She’s my girlfriend!” And with a big smile he skated away. The moms pulled eachother into a tight hug.
“We’re going to be in laws!!!!”

i know they're losing (chapter 2)
Hello everyone! Since the last chapter received such a positive response (well, if screaming could be called a positive response), I've decided to not make you all wait long for the second chapter of this fic. Also, I have no self-control. Anyways!
Once again obligatory disclaimer this is characters not people, don't ship real people, etc.
Chapter Title: over snow and winter's morn
Chapter Wordcount: 3203
Content warnings: more discussion of death, also quite a bit of Scott being a bit of a dick. He's going through it, besties.

Chapter 1
Actual fic under the cut:
Jimmy doesn’t get a chance to return the ring any time in the next few weeks. Scott must have told Katherine that he visited, since she doesn’t come to bother him about it, and every time Jimmy tries to go to Rivendell, something gets in the way. Demon attacks, urgent business in his empire, once even Scott’s own guards turning him away. Apparently Scott is a ‘busy elf’. Jimmy doesn’t doubt he is, but he also doesn’t doubt that Scott’s actively trying to avoid him. Scott is a petty man, ultimately, and Jimmy knows this, used to love it like he loved all his husband’s flaws, all his imperfections that were perfect to Jimmy. Now, though, it just hurts that Scott’s turning that pettiness on him.
Finally, something changes. Jimmy gets an invitation (in person!) from one of his closest allies; Lizzie wants to hold a ball, and she wants as many people as possible to come. It will be fancy and formal, with dancing and politics and all the things Jimmy’s just a bit awkward with, but he is an extrovert at heart, and well...Scott will be there, as Lizzie warns him.
“I know you and him don’t really get on, so I get if you don’t want to come. I really hope you will, though, it’s going to be a fun night!”
Jimmy nods. “I’ll be there! I need to talk to Scott anyways, actually, got to return this ring to him. It’s important, I think.”
“Gotcha! See you there,” Lizzie says with a broad smile. Jimmy appreciates that she doesn’t ask any questions about the ring, especially given that it’s the one thing holding together his emotional state right now.
And that’s how he finds himself frantically searching for something fancy enough to wear to a formal ball, wishing he’d had the forethought to plan for this a bit better. Scott would have planned, he thinks, would have had an outfit laid out for each of them and the time it would take them to get there exactly calculated.
He shakes that thought off, settling for a green tunic with copper accents. It’s not the most elegant thing in the world, especially when you take into account the slime that’s dripped onto it, but it’ll have to do. It’s representative of his empire for sure, and the copper is a nod to his ally. It’s good enough, and that’s what matters, Jimmy thinks.
Lizzie greets him when he enters the ballroom, smiling widely with her new fiance by her side. “Jimmy! Glad you could make it!”
“Yeah, yeah, I did make it! Here I am!” The smile he gives her is genuine; he likes Lizzie. She's fierce and kind all at once, the best kind of ally.
Joel offers him a brief wave, which Jimmy happily returns before Lizzie drags him off to chat.
“So, heard from a little birdy you’ve actually been visiting Scott,” Lizzie says, a grin like the cat that got the bird on her face.
“As a favor to Katherine,” Jimmy quickly clarifies.
She nods. “She did say that, yes. She also said she heard about the visit from Scott himself.”
Jimmy hates himself a little for being pathetic enough to ask “What did- did she say what he said? Was he talking about me?”
“She didn’t say exactly, but he seemed ‘shaken up’, apparently...and a little wistful.”
“Oh, no. Lizzie, no.”
“Say, why did you have his ring?” She’s still grinning, a little more evil this time.
“It’s a long story!” Jimmy blurts, and flees. How’s he supposed to say ‘oh we were married on a server where we thought we were going to permanently die and then we respawned here and now Scott’s refusing to talk to me because the grief over my last death is slowly killing him’ tactfully? There’s just no way to do it! Nice one, Jimmy, now she thinks you’re in love with him or something, he thinks ruefully. Not that he isn’t- wasn’t. Wasn’t. Scott’s made it very clear that he and Jimmy are through.
Still, even with his depressing thoughts, the ball is pretty okay. No one’s gotten assassinated, there haven’t been any demonic appearances, Lizzie’s already showing off her engagement ring, and he’s pretty sure Joey’s going off about how hot demons are. It’s a decent party, by empires standards.
Scott makes an appearance some twenty minutes or so later, stepping into the ballroom with typical elven grace. He’s not a very elven elf, as he once told Jimmy, short and sarcastic with a love for mortals, but he still looks twice as elegant as everyone else in the ballroom. The shakiness in his step from a few weeks ago seems entirely gone, and for a minute, Jimmy’s heart leaps in hope. Maybe he’s getting better?
Well, only one way to find out. Jimmy swallows the complicated knot of emotion in his chest as he crosses the ballroom, coming to an ungraceful stop in front of Scott. Up close, the elf looks worryingly pale, and there are dark circles under his eyes. He looks like a strong breeze might sweep him away.
“Lord Codfather,” Scott greets.
“Elvenking,” Jimmy returns, dipping his head a little. Look, Scott, he can be formal too, alright? “Care for a dance?”
Scott stares for a long moment before giving a single nod. “I suppose I wouldn’t mind.” He takes Jimmy’s outstretched hand in his own gloved one, letting Jimmy put a hand on his waist as they start into a simple waltz.
Now, Jimmy is a terrible dancer, and he’s not too proud to admit it. He steps on Scott’s feet, gets off-rhythm once or twice, and nearly crashes them straight into Lizzie and Joel. But despite their current status as enemies(ex-spouses?), Scott says nothing about it. He’s silent, in fact, seemingly caught up in the music. There’s something wistful about his expression, something soft and gentle hidden under his icy facade. If Jimmy tries hard enough, he can almost pretend that the two of them are back in 3rd life, dancing under the stars, and Scott is looking at him like he’s the most precious thing in the world.
The illusion is shattered, however, by how heavily Scott is leaning on him by the end of the dance. He’s unsteady on his feet, grip like iron on Jimmy’s hand and shoulder. Though Jimmy can’t feel his hands though the gloves, when he brushes against Scott’s arm, it’s still a little too cold to be entirely right.
The music slows and then pauses before the next song, and they head for the edge of the dance floor.
“Thank you for the dance, Codfather,” Scott says. He steps away, face falling back into the emotionless facade so quickly it’s hard to be sure the tender expression of a moment before wasn’t a dream.
That’s the final straw for Jimmy’s fragile self-control. “Can we please stop acting like we don’t know each other?”
“What else do you want from me?” Scott snaps back.
“I- something! Anything! Just acknowledge that I exist, won’t you?”
“Acknowledging you exist doesn’t mean I’m still in love with you, you know.”
“I know,” Jimmy says, a little softer, a little bitter. “I know, trust me. I just want you to stop- to stop hurting yourself to try and avoid pain!”
“That’s not what I’m do-”
“Then what are you doing? Enlighten me, o wise elf!” They’ve kept their voices low enough, but people nearby are still starting to stare at them. Jimmy can’t bring himself to care. “You told me it would destroy you to lose me, but you’re losing me now by pushing me away!”
Scott’s expression is pained for a moment before he covers it with a glare. “I’m trying to do what’s best for the both of us, Jimmy.”
“No you’re-”
“I am an elf, and I cannot love a mortal. Humans are quick flames, burning and changing quickly. You’ll fall in love again, and you’ll forget me. There will be a mortal who loves you- I’m sure there are many already.”
“But I don’t want a mortal,” Jimmy protests. “I want you.”
“You can’t have me.”
“But why? Why, Scott?” His voice breaks, embarrassingly enough. “You said you loved me, you promised me all the time we’d be able to- to carve out, to steal from the universe.”
“I can’t give you that!” Scott snaps. “You’ll live sixty more years, maybe, a fraction of my life, a blink of an eye to an elf, and I can’t even give you that long! Not when I have to be the elvenking before anything else. Nothing I can do will ever be enough for you.”
“Enough for me? For ME? All I want is for you not to die to your own dumb plan and acknowledge my existance once in a while!”
“And all I want is for you to realize I can’t love you again!”
“Why can’t you care about me?”
“Why can’t you move on?” Scott counters.
“You’re not moving on, you’re just trying to forget!” Jimmy shouts.
In the silence that follows, he realizes that most of the ballroom must have heard the end of their little lovers’ quarrel. In fact, Lizzie’s somehow appeared next to him, laying a hand on his arm.
“Is everything alright, boys?” Her tight smile says that they will most certainly get kicked out of the ball if they continue this, and Jimmy can’t blame her.
“My apologies, Ocean Queen,” Scott says, switching to a formal tone with ease that Jimmy envies. He dips his head in respect, and only Jimmy sees how his hands tremble. “Everything is alright, but I am afraid I will have to leave early.”
She smiles again, dangerous this time. “No need to worry, Lord Smajor. Do try to avoid picking fights with my allies, next time, though.”
“It won’t happen again,” he promises, and sweeps away.
“Coward!” Jimmy shouts after him, anger making him bold. “You’re a coward, Scott!”
“Stop it,” Lizzie scolds. “You’ve already made quite the scene, and I did essentially kick him out. I’m not sure how much further you really want to carry it.”
“He is though, Lizzie, he’s a coward! Doesn’t want to face me because that means facing- well, facing everything that’s happened!”
“What do you mean, everything that’s happened?” Lizzie turns to the gathered audience of people who have been watching the spat, shooing them off as best as possible. They slowly disperse, thank goodness. “You and he are enemies, right?”
Jimmy almost winces. “It’s a bit- it’s a bit more complicated than that.”
“I can see that. Jimmy, that looked like a messy breakup!”
“It, um, well, it was. Sort of.”
“Oh, Jimmy.” Lizzie’s giving him a sympathetic look, which she follows up with a tight hug. “Next time, how about we don’t invite him?”
He nods against her shoulder, rage leaving him as quickly as it came. Instead, he just feels...tired. “Thanks, Lizzie.”
“Of course. We look after each other, yeah?’
“Yeah.”
Jimmy leaves the ball exhausted, still reeling from everything that happened. The few lingering bits of anger are what gets him home, a bitter taste in his mouth from the bitter words he spat. Coward! You’re a coward, Scott! He refuses to regret them.
Scott’s ring nearly ends up in the swamp again, but Jimmy’s cooled down enough by the time he gets back that he can’t bear to throw it away. Instead, it goes in a box which he tucks into his old storage chest, somewhere he’ll never have to see it again. Scott can go to hell if he wants the ring back after all that.
-
For a while, Jimmy’s plan to tuck the ring and never think about Scott again seems to be working. Lizzie visits a few times to check on him, but she never asks specifically about Scott, and Jimmy doesn’t say anything about him. He receives radio silence from Rivendell, and he tells himself that it’s good, that he doesn’t want to hear from Scott.
So yes, his plan is working, up until he gets a knock on his door and opens it to find Scott there.
The elf looks terrible, frankly, almost worse than he did at the ball. His hair, which is usually so nicely done, is a mess, cyan strands falling all across his face. His clothes are wrinkled and have swamp mud on them, his eyes have dark circles as violent as bruises, and he’s swaying a tiny bit. In short, he looks like he didn’t sleep for a week, chugged coffee, and fought god in a denny’s parking lot.
Jimmy thinks he’s kinda hot.
No, he doesn’t. Fake news, brain.
“Hi,” Scott says.
“Scott? What- why are you here?” Jimmy’s voice rises, in shock or outrage even he doesn’t know.
“I came to apologize.” Though he looks like he’s going to pass out at any second, Scott’s voice is steady. “I was scared- I am scared. I’m terrified to lose you again. But I shouldn’t have pushed you away and hurt you.”
“No, you shouldn’t have!” Jimmy snaps, but there’s little real rage behind it.
“I know. I- uh- fuck.” Scott’s hands are shaking as he pulls out a little box from some hidden pocket. “I brought a gift as an apology.”
Jimmy takes it, curious despite himself, and finds that what’s inside is a silver bracelet with little crystals embedded in it. Flowers are the predominant design; he recognizes roses, hyacinths, irises, anemone, and poppies. On the underside, there’s elven lettering, though Jimmy has no clue what it says. The whole thing is a little clumsy, not quite as professionally made as the ring Scott once gave him, and Jimmy looks up at Scott. “Did you make this yourself?”
“Mhm. I did my best, but it’s not as nice as I’d like.”
“It’s pretty,” Jimmy says.
Scott’s shoulders slump with relief. “It’s spelled, too. Protection, good fortune, that sort of thing.”
“Do the flowers mean something?”
“They do.”
Jimmy doesn’t press for details.
“I-” Scott starts again, a tremble in his voice that wasn’t there before. “I’m sorry, Jimmy, I really am. I won’t ask you to forgive me, but I needed to apologize before my time ran out.”
“Is it that- that dire?”
The barest nod. “This is what I chose to do with it. Making that, coming here. You deserved an apology.”
There’s a moment of awkward silence, Jimmy staring down at the bracelet.
Scott breaks it. “It wouldn’t be fair of me to ask you to love me. I can’t promise you eternity. I can’t promise you happiness. I can’t promise you that I won’t have to be the elvenking first and a husband second. But I am yours still, if you’ll have me.”
A part of Jimmy is very tempted to throw both Scott’s gift and his love back in his face. He can’t bring himself to stay mad, though, not when Scott’s looking at him like that, with so much raw vulnerability. So much devotion, like Jimmy’s the most precious thing he’s ever seen. It would be so, so easy to break that last strand of fragile hope in his expression; he’s offering up his heart on a silver platter, ready to shatter. Jimmy could- should- yell at him, reject his gift, tell him that he’s ruined any chance he has at Jimmy’s love.
Jimmy kisses him instead. It’s messy and it’s sudden and he very nearly drops Scott’s gift in the swamp in his haste to tangle his hands in Scott’s hair and press their lips together, but it’s real.
The little startled noise Scott makes gets cut off by Jimmy’s mouth on his. Scott’s lips are chapped and taste a little of glowberries, but Jimmy doesn’t care. He’s going to kiss his damn husband, something he thought he was never going to get to do again.
When they finally have to separate, Scott’s breathing hard, cheeks flushed. It’s a good look on him, Jimmy thinks, much more alive than his pale, rigid expression from before.
“So, I’ll take that as you want to stay married?” Scott’s voice is wry, collected, but his blush ruins the smooth effect.
“Of course I do! You absolute idiot!”
“Just checking.”
Jimmy kisses him again, just to shut him up. Scott goes with it easily, leaning into Jimmy’s embrace without complaint.
They pull apart quicker this time, and Jimmy holds the bracelet out. “Can you help me put this on?”
Scott nods. His hands are cold against the skin of Jimmy’s wrist when he fastens the clasp, but Jimmy grabs them and holds them in his own warm ones until they don’t feel quite so much like ice. It’s something. It’s a beginning.
“Come in and catch up with me?” Jimmy offers.
Scott nods again, and he doesn’t let go of Jimmy’s hand when Jimmy turns to go inside.
They talk about a lot of things. Empires, 3rd life, nightmares. Pufferfish, cake, flowers. They talk about the trials and tribulations of ruling; really, Jimmy complains that people keep attacking him and Scott nods in sympathy.
Eventually, though, the sun is starting to set.
“I need to get home,” Scott says. “You need sleep, not to stay up all night talking.” He goes to get up, and Jimmy immediately lunges, catching his sleeve.
“Don’t go! Please,” he adds, feeling his face flush at how desperate he sounds.
“Jimmy, darling, we both need to sleep.”
“We can sleep! I just….nevermind.”
“No, no.” Scott kneels back down, peering at him like Jimmy’s a puzzle that needs solving. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Jimmy.”
“I don’t want to be alone!” Jimmy blurts, and immediately flushes again. “It’s just, I’ve been alone for a long time, and there’s this demon thing that keeps showing up, and I’ve only just got you back, I’m not ready to let you go, and-”
“Hold on. What was that about a demon?”
“There’s this demon creature that I keep seeing, and it’s really messing with me,” he manages. “It sounds like you, sometimes, but all distorted, and I can’t handle it! You know me, I’m not brave or smart or anything, I’m just Jimmy!”
Scott’s frowning, worry wrinkling his brow. “Alright. How about you come to Rivendell for the night, then? I can protect us both easier there.”
Jimmy nods, feeling especially pitiful as Scott helps him to his feet. “Thank you.”
“Always. Do you still have the ring I gave you?”
“I do, I just….give me a moment to remember where I put it.”
“Good. It’s important.” Scott doesn’t elaborate, and Jimmy is too distracted looking for the ring to ask what he means.
Scott’s offer of protection feels flimsier when he has to lean on Jimmy as they travel back to Rivendell, but even then, it’s impossible to feel quite so afraid now that Jimmy isn’t alone anymore. And it’s even harder to fear anything that could happen when he’s safe in a warm bed, his head tucked against his husband’s chest. They’ll be okay, Jimmy thinks. They’ve been given another chance, and this time they’re going to get it right.

From the curved entry of her front door, Dean watches as his best friend, his rock, weeps. Another failed relationship that she no doubt blames herself for. But the truth was, she was attracted to a certain type of guy. A clean shiny penny on the outside, but on the inside, worth less than that. Not a single man she had dated in the last few years had treated her even close to how she deserves to be treated. How he could treat her. How he wants to treat her. No matter what, Dean is always there to hold her, to pick up her pieces and hold them together until she finds the strength to move forward.
Y/N had been there for him when he hit rock bottom, too. A string of terrible relationships with women who would never hold a candle to her. That is why they failed. He knew that going in and yet, he kept going. For the last few years, she has been the only woman for him. He tries to make her see it, between douchebags, but he can never get through to her. He has been biding his time. Maybe, just maybe, tonight she’ll listen to him.
Because, he is an innocent man in this situation. He has never hurt her, has never lied to her. He hates seeing her like this. If she opens that door, lets someone in, fearful of a touch, living with the anger of having been a fool. She will not listen to anyone so nobody tells her a lie. For three weeks, he stops over each night after work to find her in this state of pain and anguish. With measured movements, he lowers himself to the sofa beside her, pulling her blanket a little tighter around her. Y/N involuntarily flinches at the soft touch.
Sniffling and wiping at her eyes, Y/N pushes him away. “I don’t want to talk to you right now.”
“I know you don’t, sweetheart, and you don’t have to. I wasn’t sure if you wanted to see me either, but I wanted to see you. See how you’re holding up,” Dean’s soft voice rumbles through her small living room.
Dean murmurs gently, his words encroaching further on her space. “I’m not going to talk to you if that’s not what you want. Please call me later, Y/N. You can’t ignore me forever. Let me know you’re okay.”
“I don’t owe you an explanation, Dean,” she snaps, immediately regretting her words, her tone. Dean is always here. Each and every time she fails, he is right here to mend her broken pieces. “I’m sorry.”
“No, you don’t owe me anything, Y/N/N. I just want you to feel better, and I’ll do anything to see you smile again,” he whispers, pressing a kiss to her temple. “I’ll be back tomorrow.”
With that, Dean rises from the worn sofa, dropping an envelope from his jacket pocket before turning and leaving, the door clicking loudly behind him. He uses the spare key she gave him to secure the lock, a heavy sigh leaving his lips. “I love you, Y/N.”
~*~
The daily alarm wakes her from a fitful slumber. Y/N blinks slowly, trying to clear the cobwebs of sorrow and tears from her heavy eyes. The first rays of sunlight dance across flecks of dust floating in the air, landing on the cluttered coffee table, illuminating the plain white envelope, her name written across the front in Dean’s simple block lettering.
A small hand snakes out from the beneath the warm blanket, snatching the envelope from its resting place. With shaking fingers, Y/N opens it and scans the letters scrawled across the page. She takes a deep breath and starts at the beginning.
Y/N,
I know you’ve been through some shit, none of which you deserve. None of it was your fault, so stop blaming yourself. You’ve been my rock so long, I don’t know what I’d do without you by my side. I’ll be here for you through anything, good or bad, come Hell or highwater.
I know you don't want to hear what I say. I know you're gonna keep turning away. But, I've been there and if I can survive, then I know you can, too. I can keep you alive. I'm not above going through it again, for you. I’ll do anything for you.
I know you’re only protecting yourself. I know you’re thinking of somebody else. Someone who hurt you, but I’m not above making up for the love you’ve been denying you could ever feel. I'm not above doing anything to restore your faith if I can. Faith in humanity, in men, in me.
I’ve held on to these feelings for you so long, too afraid to open my big mouth and lose the best thing that ever happened to me. But I can’t keep it to myself any more. I don’t just want to be the one to comfort you when you’re hurting, I want to be the one to protect you and keep you safe, so you don’t hurt anymore. I want to be the reason you smile, because you’ve been mine since the moment we met.
Some people say they will never believe another promise they hear in the dark, because they only remember too well they heard somebody tell them before. I know you’ve heard them before, but this is my first promise to you, I will never make you a promise I don’t intend to keep.
I don’t want to sleep alone every night. I want you by my side, to curl into you, create a safe space for you to just be, to feel, to be loved.
But, I've been there and if I can survive, I can keep you alive. I'm not above going through it again. I'm not above being cool for a while, so if you're cruel to me I'll understand. That's your decision, but I'm not below anybody I know if there's a chance of resurrecting a love. I'm not above going back to the start to find out where the heartache began. To hold you until you believe the promises I whisper. To hold you until you believe that I’ll never hurt you. To hold you until you believe in you, in me...in us.
I’d never do anything to ruin what we have. I guess some people hope for a miracle cure, or some people just accept the world as it is. But, I'm not willing to lay down and die without you, not without a fight. I’ll fight for us, but more importantly, I’ll fight for you.
All my love always,
Dean
Through the tears, Y/N reads his letter over and over until she can no longer see. Wiping her eyes, she unlocks her phone and shoots him a text. With new found resolve, she jumps in the shower. When she emerges from the steam, feeling better than she has in months, she finds her best friend sitting on her sofa.
“Thank you for coming, Dean. After I pushed you away last night, I didn’t know if you would,” she whispers, taking a seat next to him.
“I’ll always be here when you need me, or want me. You know that, Y/N,” Dean assures her, taking her hands in his. “I see you read my letter.”
“It’s always been you, I was just too scared and selfish, and foolish to see it,” she replies, shaking her thoughts loose. “I never thought my feelings would be reciprocated. Nobody’s ever written me a love letter before.”
“I knew I couldn’t say all of that out loud, I was so scared to say anything, I didn’t want to lose you. I guess we’re a couple of idiots, huh?” Dean chuckles.
“We found each other. That’s all that matters,” Y/N smiles, resting her head on his shoulder.
“I don’t know about you, but I could use a nap,” Dean yawns, running his fingers through her hair.
“Didn’t sleep well?” she questions, looking up at him.
“Not when I slept on the floor outside your door.”
“You did not!” Y/N smacks his shoulder playfully.
“I bet the neighbors know my name,” he grins sheepishly, pointing at his work shirt, his name clearly on display.
“Not how you hoped that would happen, is it?” Y/N giggles, teasing him.
“It made you laugh, though. I missed it; your laugh, your smile,” Dean says, cupping her cheek. “I missed you.”
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles.
“Don’t be. Where there is no struggle, there is no strength. We will be strong together,” Dean vows.
“Did you just quote Oprah Winfrey?” she laughs.
“I did. You’re a bad influence on me, what can I say?” he shrugs.
“Let’s get some rest. We can be bad together later,” she winks, rising from her seat and reaching out her hand for him.
“Can we fight so we can have some angry make-up sex later?” Dean smirks, wiggling his eyebrows.
“Slow down, Winchester. Nap first. We’re only about ten minutes in, I don’t know if I’m ready to have our first fight yet,” she scoffs.
“Well, if it helps, it will probably be my fault and I’ll spend hours apologizing,” Dean offers.
“So the neighbors really know your name?” she giggles.
“As long as you keep laughing and smiling, I don’t care what they call me, as long as you call me yours.”
Did you like it? The nicest thing you can do for a writer is reblog their work and tell them, and others, how much you like it!

Chapter 2 - A New Jerusalem
Losing My Religion Series Masterlist
Unprofessional Bard's Masterlist
Previous Chapter • Next Chapter
Pairing: Joel Miller x Female!Reader/OC
Warnings: PTSD/panic attacks + some suicidal thoughts... angst basically.
Summary: The company finally reach Jackson. Greetings are exchanged between old and new friends, but the reader's hurt after an attack on the plant.
Word Count: 4.917
Author's Note: Now although I haven't been diagnosed either with PTSD or depression, I do have anxiety and had my fair share of panic/anxiety attacks. I can relate or empathise with the people who do have PTSD/depression to some level and I can assure you all I do tons of research about each mental illness I'll be mentioning in these series. I've put mighty effort in this chapter and the following to make it as accurate as possible. My last desire is to upset someone, please forgive me if I do for it isn't intentional... but thank you all so much for reading! 🥺
Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Over a month on the road with a smuggler, who's supposedly your, a FEDRA major general's, enemy and a little girl who turned out to be your second chance at life; you really couldn't help but grow fond of them. Them who offered you protection and their own water. How can you not be grateful for them? Even though a second chance at life wasn't exactly your preferred way out of this apocalypse... But everything happens for a reason, you supposed and sighed in relief once you saw a sign written Jackson County on it. It was when Ellie had asked about what happened between Joel and Tommy that Joel revealed the story, but you were too busy stressing out to listen as you all approached a stream. Your heart started beating faster the closer you got to a hydroelectric power plant, which you had to cross, apparently.
"You okay? You've been awfully quiet," Joel asked, suddenly stopping in front of you.
"Yeah," you gulped, palms clammy. Were you sweating? "I'm- it's okay. I'm fine."
Joel gave you a suspicious look, but didn't say anything and moved to try and turn the wheel to make up a bridge from the metal pieces attached to the power plant.
"Well, that gets us halfway." Ellie observed. "If we get the other one up, we'll make it across."
"Isn't there another way?" You sighed, face pale, fidgeting. "There's got to be another way."
The pair gave you an odd look and Joel spoke: "Well, there seems to be no other way but to cross the river."
"Maybe- maybe there's something that will stop the water from flowing? I'll- check over there." You pointed at a control room behind you and walked over there. When the door didn't open, you kicked it open with such force, Ellie and Joel were left more confused than ever. The place had no lights, which meant there was no power surging through the devices in there, but you began pushing every button in there nevertheless.
"Fuck!" You growled and hit the button table with trembling hands in frustration. You felt hot in your jacket all of a sudden, then noticed Joel getting into the water. You froze then and there, realizing you really didn't have another option but to cross the bridge. Your eyes watered at the realization, but you forced yourself to keep calm like you did countless other times. You were the legendary Alpha One leader, after all. A devoted, disciplined, brave leader. Being afraid or weak was something you could've never been able to afford.
You nodded to yourself, ran your fingers through your hair and walked out, only to find Joel carrying Ellie to the other side on a pallet.
"Go on, give it a spin," Joel said once she jumped off the pallet and reached the other wheel. "So good of you to join us."
You remained quiet at his remark as he got out of the water and watched Ellie complete the bridge. He jumped over to your side and began walking to the other side.
"Hey, be careful crossing that thing!" Ellie called out as you both crossed the makeshift bridge.
"We will," Joel replied as he effortlessly walked halfway through, while your legs began shaking. You tried to keep your composure and walk across as normally as he did, but your legs felt like they were about to give in any moment. Keep it together, you thought to yourself, but it was no use.
"Joel," your hands instinctively reached out to him when you stepped on a particularly wet spot, but he was already across, high-fiving Ellie. Maybe it would've been better if you had told them what happened to Felicity and the results of it on you.
"What?" Joel turned around just before stepping off the piece of metal.
"I- I can't cross this-" you spoke while lowering yourself down to grab the edges, running out of breath.
"What do you mean you can't cross it?" Joel spoke, irritated but confused. "C'mon, you're hafway though already."
"No, no I can't," your voice cracked as the sound of the current started getting louder, your heart beating faster. The images of Felicity's body being thrown into water started to appear on your mind.
"Joel, I think she's scared," Ellie said, worried.
"Alright, I'm gonna come grab you," Joel called for you, his irritation slowly turning into anxiety.
"Okay, okay," you spoke between deep breaths, tears filling your eyes and hanging on for dear life. You shut your eyes tightly as you waited for him. It didn't even take 5 seconds for Joel to walk over to you and hold your shoulder: "I'm here, I got you, let's go."
"Uhh," you forcefully moved your feet toward his direction. "Oh god..."
"C'mon, I'm right here, you can get up." Joel encouraged you while holding your hand and it actually encouraged you for a solid second, so you complied, but you got up too fast and it immediately got you feeling dizzy.
"Oh no, oh- woah!" You shouted when you lost your footing and slipped.
"(Y/N)!" Ellie shrieked the same time Joel yelled, but before your upper body could completely sink into the water, Joel caught you by the arm, his chest hitting the metal with a hard thud.
"Fuck! Joel- get me out!" You cried and clawed at the poor man's arm, feeling the water splash around your neck and soak your hair.
"Calm down! I got you, give me your other hand!" Joel yelled as he tried to get a hold of you. It was the first time he was seeing pure terror in your eyes, the first time he saw you being afraid of something so badly.
You sobbed as he grabbed your other hand and pulled you up, Ellie running to help you out. The both of them pulled you out and Joel quickly dragged you across and kneeled beside you, laying you on the ground.
"(Y/N), it's okay, you're safe- (Y/N)-" Joel held your face in his hands as you continued sobbing, reminding him of Sa-
"(Y/N)!"
You covered your mouth with the back of your hand, then bit the side of it, forcing yourself to calm down as you choked back your sobs. Joel and Ellie could do nothing but stare as your body slowly stopped shaking.
You pushed yourself off the ground, trembling lightly and sniffing quietly. Your embarrassment was keeping you from turning around to face them, but Joel's soft voice reached your ears from behind you: "You okay?"
"Yeah," you sniffed. "Yeah, I'm- uh, sorry about that... Let's keep moving."
"You sure? You should rest awhile," Joel reached out to grab your shoulder once more, but you turned around before he could.
"I'll rest when we get there," you said, eyes red, voice cracking a bit and throat hurting. "There's only a few miles left, you said? I'll be fine, let's go."
Joel nodded and told Ellie to move, while he stayed back with you. You stared at the side of your hand which now had deep, purple teeth marks on it, too afraid to look at Joel while he spoke quietly: "Why didn't you tell me you were afraid of the water?"
"I'm not afraid of the water, I..." you groaned, tears still rolling down your face. "It's about... Felicity."
Joel stared for a moment, then nodded with a soft expression on his face. He could tell this was no phobia the moment you mentioned her name.
You all walked, climbed some rocks and went under a tree for a while more as Ellie dreamt about coming across a squirrel and eating it. Poor girl was so hungry, and so were you and Joel but she was just a child.
Your blood ran cold when you came across an old FEDRA territory: "Ain't no way around, we're gonna have to cut through the plant," Joel said and gave you a look. "You think it's empty?"
"I've never heard of this base in the past four years or so- It's gotta be, but we have to be careful." You shook your head.
You and Joel tried to open the doors, but they were... locked. Just as you were about to turn around, a woman appeared to your right on the patrol walls. A chill went up your spine.
"Don't even think about reaching for your weapons-" She spoke, but you grabbed your rifle and Ellie had her little pistol already pointing at the woman. "Tell her to drop her gun, now."
"Ellie, do as the lady says," Joel backed away from the door, all of you raising your hands up reluctantly.
"Please tell me you're lost," the blonde woman sighed.
"We didn't know this place was occupied, we're just trying to make our way through." Joel.
"Through to where?"
Your heart began racing again, at the thought of someone recognizing you. You were 98% sure this place was deserted a few years ago, how-
"They're alright." A familiar voice reached your ears from the left, interrupting your thoughts.
"What, you know these people?" The woman asked in confusion.
"I know him," he spoke and the door opened, to reveal Tommy with a rifle in hand. "He's my goddamn brother."
"Tommy?" Joel was stunned at the sight of him and so were you.
"Holy shit," Tommy said before going in for a hug. It was the first time you'd seen Joel look relaxed and genuinely happy.
"How you doin' baby brother?"
"Goddamn... Let me look at you." Tommy gave his brother a once over, commenting on how fuckin' old he'd gotten, the blonde woman appearing from behind the door as well.
"Shit... (Y/N)? What the hell are you doin' with him?" Tommy's smile grew wide and you extended your hand over to him, which he used to grab and pull you into a brief hug with.
"Good to see you too, Tommy," you smiled. "You gotta take these FEDRA signs down man, gives the feller a heart attack."
"That's exactly the point," Tommy chuckled, then gave a look at the blonde lady. "This is Maria," he looked at you and Joel: "Be nice to her, she sorta runs things around here."
"Ma'am," Joel nodded. "Thanks for not blowing my head off."
"Would've been embarrassing," Maria said. "Considering you're my brother-in-law."
Joel looked at the couple, dumbfounded while you looked between the three of them. When the hell did he got married?!
"We all gotta get wrangled up at some point." Tommy smiled at the both of you like a fool in love. You chuckled and shook your head, remembering the times he used to be a Firefly. Maria and Ellie exchanged a quick conversation before Tommy finally made a move to bring you all inside.
There were literally no words whatsoever to describe how relieved you were. Finally, fucking finally, you had reached your safe haven. Ellie was right, although it needed some work this place was indeed like a small village protected by armed men and a huge FEDRA sign. The walls were long and they looked impenetrable. The moment you heard the door close from behind you, you almost collapsed onto the floor; legs turning into jello and relief washing over you, even though you heard Maria say something about bandits and raids.
At least they weren't Hunters.
You mostly stayed quiet as Joel and Tommy caught up, Ellie petted and admired some horses while a lady and Maria talked to Ellie about them. You just watched and tried to enjoy the moment of peace, locking eyes with Joel for a brief moment before Tommy motioned all of you to follow him for the rest of the tour.
"Really though, how did you end up with Joel, (Y/N)?" Tommy asked right before you walked through a door. You could tell he had a lot of questions, but they had to wait for awhile as you didn't really have the energy to answer them.
"It's uh- a long story." You pursed your lips and stared at him with a pitiful look on your face, only for Maria's walkie to interrupt your exchange. Tommy decided to take up her place when she said she'd rather eat with Ellie and you.
"I'll come with you," Joel said. "You two go with Maria and put some food in yourselves."
"Joel?" Ellie objected with a slightly uncomfortable look on her face.
"C'mon Ellie, let's give the boys some space." Maria smiled at her.
"It's alright Ellie, let's go eat." You rubbed her back and began tailing Maria.
"So," Maria sighed with some energy on her, you wish you had the same. "Before I make any assumptions, would you like to tell me where you're headed or why are you all travelling together?"
Ellie and you looked at each other for a short moment as Maria led you through some rooms: "Uh, actually we were travelling separately, they kinda stumbled across me as I was... dying."
Maria turned around to give you a surprised look, making you shrug and smile awkwardly: "I told you it was a long story."
You began telling her about where your roads crossed, without getting into details, as she got all of you... steaks?
Goddamn, you thought.
"We thought you'd be in the city just as we came across the doors," you spoke after finishing your tale. Maria ate normally, while you barely touched your food. Ellie, on the other hand, almost choked on hers because she was eating too fast.
"Slow down, Ells, the food ain't going anywhere," You handed a(n actual) napkin to her as she struggled to breathe.
"So Ellie isn't your and Joel's daughter," Maria smirked. "What a shame, we had just the perfect place for a family of three."
Your cheeks got dusted with pink as you stared at Maria, mouth slightly agape: "No- Although if you have another perfect place for an adult, that'd be great."
"How do you mean?"
"I escaped FEDRA," You spoke uncomfortably. "My team, they... they all died and, I don't wanna go back. I never wanted to be a part of it to begin with, that's why I was scared when you first showed up. I thought it was an ambush."
Maria nodded sympathetically as you continued: "When Ellie told me of this place, she told me I'd be safe here..."
"Oh," Maria sighed. "Of course, yeah... I see that you and Tommy know each other from way back and that he trusts you?"
"Yeah," you tensed. What if she was the jealous type and wasn't going to let you in because of your 'history' with Tommy? "I used to help him and a few other Fireflies out when they couldn't get around FEDRA. I thought they served a good cause but... It was just a few favours and exchanges here and there."
"I see. He never told me about you, I was surprised when he acted the way he did when he saw you." Oh shit.
"I'm not surprised he didn't mention me," you tensed, visibly, shifting uncomfortablly. "We were just good acquaintances but I guess he was too ecstatic to find out his brother and old acquaintance was alive?"
"Relax," Maria laughed. "I'm just messing with you. Of course he told me about you and the way you watched out for him back in the day."
You really wanted to jump off a window when she confessed and giggled. Give me a break...
"You're cruel," you forced a small smile. You and Tommy really were just good acquaintances, nothing more. You really weren't sure why he hugged you all of a sudden.
"She's really tired, go easy on her," Ellie spoke, mouth full.
"I can tell, you look drained." Maria commented on your appearance worriedly. "Come on now, eat up."
"I'm not hungry," you said. After what happened only some minutes ago, your stomach wasn't in the mood for any food; yes, even though it was a delicious looking steak.
"I'm sure you are," Maria smiled sincerely. "You eat this, then take a bath afterwards and rest as long as you need."
"A bath?" Your voice trembled. "If you tell me you have shampoo or something, I'll kiss you."
Maria giggled: "Unfortunately we don't have shampoos, but we do have hot water and some soaps."
Your eyes widened further more as a hand ran through your hair: "I'm not gonna kiss you, I think I'll just pass out instead. God bless."
You had both of them laughing at your comment, which also made you smile.
"Maria," a voice suddenly echoed through the walkie. "We got the electricity back on!"
"Oh that's great news," Maria sighed into the walkie, relieved.
This place didn't feel real. They had a whole village with protection, electricity, actual food and hot baths with soaps? You just might faint on the spot. Instead, you nibbled at your food. Although you still weren't too hungry, you forced down a few bites to keep yourself going.
Minutes passed as Maria and Ellie chatted this time, peaceful minutes they were, but of course it had to come to an end when alarms went off.
"What's going on?" Ellie panicked.
"Bandits," Maria dropped her smile and got off the table. You and Ellie quickly grabbed your guns and got up as well.
"Stay behind here, I'll cover the door," You said, battle instincts kicking in immediately. They did as you asked and watched as you made your way over to the door, hearing Tommy through the walkie for a brief moment before the door flew open. You immediately fired at the unfamiliar face and heard Maria tell Ellie to hide. You hid behind the door as another man came in, quickly putting a bullet through his head and waiting for a moment to see if more men would come.
"(Y/N)?" You heard Ellie whisper. You began sprinting over to them when another bandit came from behind you. He swung a machete at you with a roar, which you barely dodged as it sliced through your waist a little, making you cry out angrily. You immediately rolled away from the man and shot a straight line of bullets from his chest to his forehead before he could approach you, grabbing the machete from him as he fell.
"Are you alright?!" Maria cried, worried, as you examined your wound.
"Yeah, just stay down!" You replied and threw yourself on the ground when a bullet whizzed only inches away from your ear. You took cover behind a crate and listened to the movements of the men: There were three in the room currently, one near your location, one who just got in the room and one headed over to where Maria and Ellie were.
Alright, you took a deep breath, let's do this.
You jumped over the crate from the left side, opposite to where you got into cover from, having the upper hand with the element of surprise, slicing the bandit's throat with the machete. The guy at the entrance shot at you but the shots were poorly aimed, which gave you time to take down the man as he reloaded. Another gunshot rang through the air from behind you, making you run over to where Ellie and Maria where, only to find a dead bandit on the ground.
"We gotta run!" Maria grabbed Ellie's hand and got up, running for a door on the right side of the room. After making sure the other side was clear, you grabbed the machete before leading the girls through the door to a room which was already occupied by four bandits.
You managed to take two down before ducking and taking cover behind a desk which Maria kicked down in the meanwhile. You reflexively held your wounded side, looked at the blood, then huffed angrily. It got too quiet as you did, which made you look up, only to see another man running toward you with a baseball bat with spikes on it.
You quickly backed off as he swung it at you, which you avoided and immediately took advantage off; your own machete was embedded into his skull before he could raise his bat once more, blood splattering on your face.
While you were struggling to get your blade out of the bandit's head, the other man advanced at you with a cry. You grabbed your machete with both hands and pushed the body off with your foot, the corpse falling almost on top of the other bandit which gave you a moment to recollect yourself and attack. The guy dodged you and you dodged him, machetes clanging against each other.
"(Y/N), duck!" You heard Ellie yell and when you did, a shot rang out from Ellie's pistol and the man hit the floor with a painful yelp. Before you could get off the ground however, a much bigger man with a shotgun came through and fired at you.
"Agh, fuck!" You groaned when you rolled out of his view and onto your wounded side, accidentally dropping your rifle on the floor, out of breath.
"Watch out!" Ellie yelled when the man discovered you behind your cover. Just my luck, you smirked when the man realised he had no ammo left. You immediately jumped up and swung your machete at him, but to your surprise he blocked your attack and grabbed your wrist. He twisted your arm and made you cry out, so you kicked him which made him double over. You tried to kick him a second time, but he quickly regained his composure and went for your waist, hugging it and driving you straight into the wall behind you.
"Oof!" You yelped and coughed, striking him with your elbows. He didn't seem to be affected by your advances as he went to choke you. You couldn't block him in time, causing you to fall on the ground with a painful grunt. Your choking noises must've alerted Ellie, for she went out of cover to shoot at the guy, only to find her pistol to be empty. She began reloading but you were running out of time, so you reached out for the machete laying just across you, then stuck it into the side of his neck when you got a hold of it; blood decorating your face furthermore.
"Oh shit, (Y/N)!" Ellie ran over to you as you fought for air, coughing your lungs out. You pushed the man off you and let Ellie hold your hand as you tried to breathe. "You're okay- I think that was the last of them."
Maria came out of the cover after making sure it was safe, rushing to your side.
"I'm okay, I'm okay," you calmed down, blinking away your tears as you rubbed your neck. That was too close, you thought and got up with Maria and Ellie's help slowly.
"You okay?" Tommy and Joel entered the room all of a sudden, Maria rushing to her husband.
"Yeah- yeah I'm fine." She nodded as Tommy held her. Your breathing was still off track as Joel rushed to Ellie's side.
"Joel! Oh man," Ellie spoke. "They were coming in from every direction-"
"Okay," Joel tried to speak but there was no stopping Ellie: "And then Maria was like We gotta run! So (Y/N) led us here and-"
"Listen-"
"We dove over these tables while (Y/N) took out these guys and this huge guy blasts in with a shotgun!"
"Slow down, slow down-"
"And he attacks her but she swings a machete into his neck-"
"Hey- hey! Are you hurt?" Joel asked, finally getting a hold of Ellie.
"No," Ellie gulped as she gave herself a once over, while Tommy and Maria watched the exchange. "But (Y/N) is!"
Joel turned around to see you leaning onto a table, pressing on your wound with a red face and hand prints around your neck, then walked over to you.
"How bad are you hurt?" Joel removed your hand from your waist and gently held your shoulder.
"Not too bad," You said, breathing slowly getting back on track. "Just need to catch my breath."
Maria and the others brought you to a small nursery and they all waited outside except Ellie. She stayed with you as a lady named Katherine cleaned your wound and applied stitches and bandages on it. While you laid down, you heard Maria yell at Tommy, which made Ellie curious and leave your side. After she was done, you thanked Katherine and went outside only to see an upset Ellie going back in your direction.
"Hey, what's going on?" You stood across her.
"Don't get me wrong (Y/N), I wanna be alone right now."
"Okay, kiddo," You nodded, confused. "I'm here if you wanna talk."
"I know."
You walked over to where Joel was after Ellie went some other direction: "You okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine- what's going on?"
"You seen Ellie?"
"Yeah and, well, she's pissed," you sighed and watched Maria walk over to both of you.
"Here we go..." Joel muttered before getting up to confront Maria.
"You," She was breathing fire. "If anything- anything at all happens to him, it's on you."
You watched her leave, what the hell was going on? The brothers stood in silence for a moment before Tommy spoke: "She's thankful you know."
"Yeah, I know..." Joel sighed. Tommy gave you a look and you took it as your cue to leave, so you got up and started walking away while they chatted quietly. Just as you were out of hearing range, you heard Tommy call for Joel.
"What is it?" You heard Joel ask when you turned around.
"That girl of yours, she took one of our horses and ran off."
You felt as though boiling water was poured on you from head to toe. Shit.
"Damn it," you heard Joel say as he approached you. "Why the hell did you let her go?"
"I didn't do anything," You said. "She said she wanted to be alone, so I let her."
"You let her be alone outside in the woods?" He growled when he got face to face with you.
"I don't like your tone," you hissed at his false accusation, to which he looked at you as if he was saying the audacity. "I didn't let her do nothin', she said she wanted to be alone- how the hell was I supposed to know she was gonna run off?!"
"Can't keep an eye on a kid..." Joel muttered then walked away, you following him.
"She's neither my child nor my responsibility to take across country and you blame me because she ran off? Please."
"Then why are you acting like her mother all the time?"
"Joel, enough. Let's go." Tommy interrupted when they reached the stables. "Not you, (Y/N). Riding will ruin your stitches."
You opened your mouth to disagree but Tommy insisted: "Please just stay. We got this, it's okay."
"Okay... Be careful." You said with a worried look and Tommy nodded in return, Joel already on the move without sparing you another look.
They rode off - all you could do was watch as they disappeared into the woods.
"They'll be fine, ma'am." The guy at the stables smiled. "Tommy and your man can take real good care of themselves-"
"He's not my man." You growled.
"Oh, well, they'll bring your daughter back-"
"She's not my daughter!" You sighed, exasperated. "Just- tell me where Maria is, please?"
He took you to her and you two sat for a while, complaining about the brothers, eventually laughing about it and making Maria say:
"I just, I really love him... if anything happened to him-"
"I know," you smiled softly. "It's not really my lifestyle, but I know what you mean."
"What do you mean not your style?"
"Love never did it for me. I, well, you could say I forgot what it feels like. I never had the time..."
"Oh I see. Well, you're here now," Maria smiled back, then smirked: "Maybe you'll find someone here, if Joel is too much for you to handle."
Your smile dropped: "Maria, I told you, I'm not interested in that jerk and vice versa... Plus, I can handle him just fine!"
You both giggled again and then Maria led you to a spare chamber she offered you to rest in while she arranged a house for you. You laid down and sighed, sleep pushing your eyelids down as soon as your head hit the pillow.
You were exhausted because of everything you've been through and everything you've felt: You were angry at Joel, worried for Ellie, relieved that you made it to Jackson in one piece, also upset that you possibly won't be seeing Ellie after tomorrow; there was also the attraction you felt toward Joel that you furiously denied, the need to relieve yourself down there and whatnot; but you really didn't think it was appropriate with the grief you pushed down and away slowly resurfacing along your feelings. You were absolutely fatigued, you felt like if someone simply touched you by the shoulder, you'd break and turn into dust then and there. At least in a few hours, when you woke up, Ellie would be back and Joel would mutter an apology - two things would be off your mind before you focused on your heavier emotions.

My Take on The Last of Us Part II: (SPOILERS)
If you were just like me who just finished the game and are unsure about the outcome and story plz take the time to read this:
Tumblr media
If I’m being honest af right now, playing The Last of Us Part 2 for the first time made me low key filled with anger and sadness. I really enjoyed playing as Ellie in Seattle with Dina and Jessie. After switching off to Abby for a few hours, I wanted to just speed run through her arc because I hated for what she did to Joel. I was starting to miss Ellie. However, after Day 1 and I started Day 2, for some reason, that hate was replaced with being intrigued with the story progression to Abby meeting Yara and Lev (I was still mad at Abby at this point, but not as much). I was glad that I stopped speed running through her story and I actually got to be in Abby’s shoes about her relationships with others and being a caring individual towards Lev and Yara. It just shows that ND is trying to make you see another point of view of Abby’s revenge being similar to Ellie’s revenge: both are in an endless cycle of vengeance that must be broken. They might try to make you sympathize with Abby, but it’s okay if you don’t. It’s okay to hate her for what she has done. However, ND wanted to show you her story and where she comes from the end of the stick does matter. Both characters have experienced loss; Ellie losing Joel, Jessie, and nearly Dina. Abby loses her father and her friends (Manny, Owen, Mel, Nora, Yara and others). So I see from both sides that they want to avenge those they have lost.
Even though TLOU is mainly focused on Ellie and Joel, you don’t realize that the TLOU universe has no heroes/villians. It’s mostly just human beings out her trying to survive an apocalypse; even if it’s defending yourself from other people who want to hurt you or murdering others in order to survive and gather supplies for others. The first game had Marlene, Tess, Sarah, Riley, David, Sam, and Henry; characters that impacted the first story for both characters, good or bad. For the second game, there’s WLFs, people of Jackson, and Scars/Seraphites. Different groups with different purposes in order to strive into the apocalyptic world.
After the depressing ending we got, I literally crumbled. A game like that has NEVER made me feel things that I had to take a pause from it and recollect my thoughts. That’s some extraordinary work. However, the ending was so impactful to me that I couldn’t process what just happened. So I thought that the game was good but not that great.
Tumblr media
That’s when I started to replay it again with a collective mind and paid more attention to detail. (Still cried every time over losing Joel). That’s when my mind started to change about the overall message and tone about the game. Naughty Dog even stated that the first game was about LOVE and the second game was aimed towards HATE. They wanted to make the player feel uncomfortable and feel a rollercoaster of emotions as a human being (anger, sadness, and happiness). This was a game about consequences from both sides of characters: the people of Jackson and the WLF. Both sides had human beings murdered in order to survive (as well as the Seraphites).
My favorite gut-wrenching part about the game (besides gameplay and character arcs) is that it honors the first game with foreshadowing. In the first game, Sam asks Ellie what she was afraid of. Ellie says that she was afraid of being alone. Revenge has unfortunately blinded Ellie and she suffered that consequence: she was all alone in the end. She lost Joel, Dina, her son were no longer home (the farmhouse they built their love and long lasting relationship together), and she lost her two fingers and couldn’t play the guitar anymore to bring her peace (the two fingers were referenced near the end of the first game when Ellie confronts Joel about the Fireflys). As Ellie leaves the guitar behind, it symbolizes that she has let go of Joel (not completely as she still loves Joel but her anger towards his death has been replaced with peace as she realizes that killing more people in order to avenge him won’t bring him back).
Tumblr media
After witnessing the ending for a second time, I started to realize that instead of my past self wanting Abby to be killed by Ellie, this present me was glad that Ellie spared Abby. Before Ellie threatened Abby, she had a flashback of bloody Joel, suffering. This caused Ellie to feel the need to “finish what she started” in order to avenge Joel and to fulfill her quest. However, after attempting to drown Abby, she slowly started to get a flashback of Joel; not bloody Joel, but Joel playing the guitar, happy to see Ellie on the night of the dance. Ellie at that point started to realize that she needed to start forgiving herself. Not Abby or anyone else. Herself. It wouldn’t bring back Joel, but she thought to herself that it wasn’t right. She needed to save herself in order to break the cycle of violence (Lev would’ve gone after Ellie if Abby was killed). If it weren’t for Ellie finding closure, Abby and Lev would’ve died on the pillars and never make it to Catalina Island.
I praise Naughty Dog for this type of direction they were going with. They’ve warned people might not like it and it’s understandable. However, that does not mean that it gives people an excuse to make it look bad for others and sending death threats/ harsh comments to others. Part II WAS something I was not expecting at all. But I’d say that if you understand the messages in the game and take the time to understand the story and characters, it makes the gaming experience phenomenal.
I know that the biggest problem people have about the second game was Joel’s death being unexpected and too early. I agree; it was too soon. However, I felt that the story with flashbacks made that up for the most part. Also, it occurred to me (my own opinion) that Joel did not put much of a fight with the WLF because I felt that he knew deep down that the people who want to hurt him were somehow connected to the Fireflys from the hospital where he killed many people in order to save Ellie. He just didn’t have enough fight in him no longer after his confrontation with Ellie the night of the dance. He probably had to live with that guilt for all those years, even though Ellie would offer to try to forgive him for making her life actually matter. We have to keep in mind that Joel is a bad person (not to us the player, but to someone else). We love Joel, I love Joel dearly, but again, there are no heroes in this story.
Overall, I really really enjoyed Part 2. Lil bit more than the first one, even tho the first game has room in my heart. I’ll be honest; there are just a few few flaws it may have for story wise but overall was an amazing experience. I wish I could experience it again. Everything from gameplay, to story progression, to amazing acting. Congrats to Naughty Dog for an amazing masterpiece :D

*** Also, we all know that Ellie does go back to Jackson to be with Dina and their son and y’all can’t tell me otherwise :) ***

Dark Paradise - Chapter 2 - Escape or die
Tumblr media
Warning: some rude language here, can be uncomfortable to read.
Chapter 1
The man stops to wipe his sweaty forehead. The air runs out on this hot summer day. Not the slightest breeze blows in this undergrowth they have been roaming for hours. His brother catches up with him, patting him patronizingly on the shoulder.
“Slowing down old man?
-I’m not old, I’m just hot. Hey, stop laughing little brother, you’ll soon understand my pain.
-By then you will be getting older again, so I will always be more dashing than you.
-Ssh
-What, it’s the truth!
-No, look up there.”
The elder cocks his rifle, ready to fire. To his right, a man is slumped against a tree, his throat pierced by a knife. They continue to advance, discovering a car and four more bodies spread out over a few dozen meters. All shot down. All armed.
“Jesus, what happened there.
- I don’t care. Fucking hunters.”
The younger doesn’t have the time to make an ironic comment on his brother's words, as screams are heard. He nods to his elder. They have to take a look. Joel sighs. Why Tommy always wants to help those who pass by? Yet he follows him. His place, his rules.
The screams have stopped, but they know they’re getting closer. As they approach a clearing, they take cover to assess the unexpected situation that unfolds there. In front of them, a woman is lying, a man trapping her between his legs, his hand keeping a knife stuck in her lower abdomen. All they can hear is her moans of pain and the man's deep, threatening voice.
She clenches her teeth. The knife tears her flesh, and she tries to move as little as possible. She knows that the moment this dog takes it away, she’ll be bleeding dangerously. He might kill her. But not without using her first. He makes it clear with his flood of obscene words. Nothing she hasn’t heard a hundred, maybe a thousand, times before. Men are incredibly commonplace when it comes to talking to women like her. She holds his gaze. She must show him that she’s not afraid. What he wants to do to her is nothing she hasn't known before.
Suddenly a thud, creaking bones and the man collapsing with all his weight on top of her, driving the blade deeper into her. She ignores the hot liquid now flowing over her and turns her head. A few meters away are two men.
The older one approaches, pushing her assailant out of her body with his foot, but keeping his aim on her. She puts her hands up and a laugh escapes her throat. How lucky. She barely got rid of these men that she’s already at the mercy of others.
“Who the fuck are you?”
His deep voice makes her tremble. She quickly regains her composure, ignoring the throbbing pain that twists her stomach. She sighs before speaking in a detached voice.
“Does it matter for what you have to do?”
The two men exchange a look of incomprehension. They were used to infected, to hunters who looked a little too closely at Jackson. They would occasionally help lost travelers. But this situation was unprecedented to them.
“Did you shoot all these men back there?”
This time it was the younger one who had spoken, his gun already slightly lowered. She doesn't answer, too absorbed by the other's gaze on her body. He frowns. He has just realized that the young woman at the end of his gun wears no shoes or pants. Her legs show signs of recent and older scars. He tries to understand.
“Where were you going like that?
-No idea. I clearly wasn’t there for strategic guidance.”
They keep asking her questions, but all she can think of is the number of men waiting for these two, and the thrill of joy that would run through them all when they’ll see them bring her back. God knows since when they haven't seen a woman.
Shit, this will never stop. Just open your pants already, so we get rid of it.
The blonde man walks over to her.
“You’re not armed, I guess?
-Except for the knife in my stomach you mean?
-I’m going to take it off. My brother is kinda quick with the trigger, so don’t try anything stupid ok?”
She bits her lower lips and turns her head away. She moans as the blade slowly comes out. Tears begin to bead down her cheeks as she feels herself leaving, the man's hands resting firmly on her wound to stop the blood flowing. She’s about to pass out, maybe about to lose her life. At the thought, a slight smile appears on her lips. Thank you.
--------------------
Her eyelids open slowly, trying to get used to the light bathing the room. She sits up suddenly, realizing she doesn't know the place. But the gesture makes her cry out in pain and she falls back with all her weight on the cold examination table. Shit, I’m not dead.
“Hey slow down.” A blonde woman walks up to her, resting her hand on her shoulder. She looks reassuring, but it has been a long time since the young woman learned not to trust appearances.
“I’m Maria, I’m in charge here. You lost quite a lot of blood, but you’re safe now. Just lay back and rest. We’ll talk when you wake up.”
She would like to protest, to say something, but her body is exhausted. She falls into darkness.
--------
When she wakes up, the blonde is still there. She looked after me all this time?
Maria approaches and gives her a glass of water, before asking some questions about her condition. Someone knocks on the door before entering. It’s the two men who found her.
“You’ve met Tommy and Joel.”
The injured woman gives them a slight nod. Her body tensed when they arrived. Is now the time? They fixed her up and now they come to get their due? Ignoring the young woman's discomfort, Maria continues.
“So, can you tell us more about you? They told me you killed some men out there. Who were they?”
The young woman doesn’t respond immediately, her gaze still blocked in the direction of the two men.
“They can get out if you want.
-No, they’ve seen most of it anyway.”
She takes a deep breath and starts.
“I don’t know who they are, or where they came from. They came to my QZ to make some trade and they bought me.
-Why would they buy you?
-Don’t play the innocent. To be a cum dump. My old owners probably thought I wasn’t fresh enough anymore for their customers and found some suckers to buy me.”
They stay looking at her, dumbfounded. Maybe they’re different after all. Maybe they didn't bring her back to treat her the same as everyone else did. She looks away. She must not delude herself, she must not hope for a different future. The older man is the first to speak.
“How did you manage to get rid of all these men?
-The leader of the troop. He didn't want to wait any longer, he wanted to test the new toy. So he took me aside to do his little business. But the idiot had left his knife within reach. So I tried my luck and I won. I stole his gun and walked away. I was hoping I could get away before the others noticed, but they were too quick. So I fired. I had almost all of them. I was almost out of there when this pig managed to grab me and stabbed me with his knife. And then you arrived”
She falls silent and lies down completely, fixing her gaze on the ceiling. She doesn't want to talk anymore. For what it will change. She knows very well what's going to happen, it's always the same story. They will throw her away or use her. Probably even both. So what’s the point of pouring out. She feels tired, but she can't give up now. Her body must resist. Maria ends up breaking the silence.
“Well, you’re welcome to stay here. We’ll find you a place to stay and some occupation. But we’ll never treat you like those men. You’re safe here. So now you need to rest and regain strength.”
With a nod, she invites the two men to leave the room. She really seems to be in charge. You’re safe here. She heard that before. In his mouth. His stupid and beautiful mouth. And time proved him wrong. It wasn’t his fault, she guesses. No one is really safe in this world.
----
Sitting on the bed, she observes the surroundings. Her own room, what a weird feeling. She never had one, other than the one when she was a baby, of course, before the pandemic. In the QZ, she shared the night alcove with her mother. Sometimes she would sleep on the sofa. But it was not the same.
She closes her eyes for a moment, trying to store all the information. Maria had returned to pick her up, providing her with a new outfit. She assured her that as soon as she’s better, they would go and find her more clothes to her liking. The two women had walked to Maria and Tommy’s house, not far from the infirmary. It had given her a glimpse of the city from afar. It seemed animated. But in a different way than the QZ. No soldiers, no cold concrete walls. Only wood, people chatting and children playing innocently. Is it possible that such a place still exists?
The older woman promises to pay her a full visit in the days to come. She enumerates the different occupations of the city. The farm, the shops, the patrols. The newcomer tries to remember everything, but her brain is too exhausted for that. It’s been too long since anyone made her the conversation.
The fatigue must have been visible on her face, for she had no trouble convincing her hosts to let her up to bed, just minutes after arriving home. From the entrance she could smell the food being prepared, and it already made her heart beat. She knew she couldn't avoid this sensitive subject for long. But at least for tonight she was out of trouble.
Without making a sound, she gets up and opens the cupboards. In the first is a large safe. To store weapons, probably. In the next one, she spots a box. After a brief hesitation, she lifts the lid. She finds some stuffed animals and baby bodysuits. Yet she did not see any trace of children. Maybe they are already old? But why keep this then? Maria doesn't seem the kind of woman to keep what she doesn't need. She closes the box before lying down. It is none of her business after all.
Her body is exhausted, but her brain refuses to give her that peace. She knows that as soon as she closed her eyes, her sleep would be filled with nightmares.

GoT/TLOU Abby-sentric fic outline
A synopsis for a fic idea I had that’s too long for me to write all out, so instead here’s the long outline.
Tumblr media
I had this idea come to me while drawing my knight Abby drawing, it was inspired by Brienne of Tarth and also I’ve been in the ASOIAF fandom for years. If I were a better writer with more time here’s how my Abby-sentric somewhat GoT AU would go. This fic won’t be super dark, like I could have gone way more sad and have it align with the GoT/TLOU universe more but this is a self indulgent fic lol. Here’s some Ellie / Dina medieval art that could fit in with this too
In this AU the world is basically a GoT/generic fantasy/generic medieval/but less strict
- There are various lords across the country, some great lords some lesser ones
- Jerry is a great lord, as is Isaac, Maria is a great lady, Neil Druckmann is king (lol)
- There is a plague going around like the Cordyceps but it’s not as bad as the zombie stuff, more like an illness
- Joel is Tommy’s disgraced older brother who was cut off from the family line after going too far for revenge when Sarah was killed
- Ellie is a peasant girl who is immune to the plague, Dina is the younger daughter of a Lord. Jesse is a knight.
- Joel ends up fostering Ellie and takes her with him on his travels, they find out about her immunity to the plague
- Marlene is like a spymaster for Jerry and finds out about Ellie’s immunity, Jerry believes he and his healers can make a cure from her so he has Marlene get Ellie for him, Joel is tricked into bringing her there.
- Joel finds out they plan to run experiments and tests on Ellie to find a cure, and he isn’t about to let them hurt her
- Going back to more about Jerry and Abby, Abby is his only daughter and as a teen becomes betrothed to Owen, who was a knight that got promoted to a lord. Jerry was worried she didn’t want to be a lady and that she wouldn’t end up liking any of her suitors, but when she started to show affection to Owen, Jerry promoted Owen and betrothed them.
- Abby likes to fight though too, and Jerry was fine with her learning to be a warrior as well though it was hard to balance both duties
- Anyway, Joel finds out where they’re keeping Ellie and kills many of Jerry’s men with fire and sword, and also kills Jerry and Marlene when they try to stop him. He burns down part of the castle, rescues Ellie and they go on the run. They eventually settle in the town where Dina and Jesse are.
- Abby is heartbroken over the loss of her father, and also filled with anger. Her father’s most trusted ally Isaac comes in and offers to take charge of the area, Abby agrees to it because most of the council and was killed in the fire and she doesn’t want to lead the town anyway.
- Isaac offers to have Abby trained full time by his best swordsmans so she can be a strong fighter, but he wants her to just be a knight and not a lady anymore. He wants her to break her betrothal to Owen and then have Owen marry one of Isaac’s ally’s daughters, Mel, instead.
- The couple is kinda distraught and conflicted about this, they love each other and have been together for two years. But, Abby knows she wants to go after Joel and can’t just sit back and be a lady. Owen is devastated but has to accept her decision. (They still do the dirty though lol.)
- Owen agrees to the break up and the betrothal to Mel, tough he doesn’t see Mel for a year, and then it’s another year until they’re finally married.
- In this 2 year period Abby is training, Joel and Ellie are laying low, and she’s also learning to fight and getting to know Lady Dina secretly
- More months pass and then the new spymaster gets word of where Joel and Ellie are hanging out. Abby is informed and she gathers her closest group of friends- Manny, Jordan, Nick, Nora, to come with her.
-  Abby has still come into contact with Owen throughout the years, they live in nearby towns. They’re friendly and don’t cross the line, it’s obvious Owen still loves Abby, and she loves him, but they chose theirs paths. Abby gets Owen to come with her on the mission and Mel is aware of it and agrees, Mel spent time with Jerry when she was a teen and looked up to him.
- They travel to the town where Joel and Ellie are in disguise. In a lucky ambush they capture Joel. It plays out a lot like the game, and Abby beats Joel with a mace. Owen is a bit disturbed by her brutality. Ellie comes in too late and is subdued, Abby finishes the job with Joel. They let Ellie go like in the game.
- They all basically go back to normal life, but before they part and say goodbye Owen lets Abby know that Mel is pregnant with their child, and Abby is upset with this. Owen is also emotionally unrested from the pregnancy and from how violent he saw Abby be and is so conflicted that when he comes back, he socially retreats from everyone. Abby tries to just continue being a knight a doing jobs for Isaac but she isn’t sure of her purpose anymore and feels lost
- Ellie is devastated from losing Joel, and vows revenge. Tommy is also upset by the news that his brother was killed, but people don’t want him to send out soldiers to find the person responsible, so he meets and supports Ellie in her tracking them down. It doesn’t take long for his spies to figure the perpetrators were likely connected to Jerry and his house, so Ellie gets Jesse to come with her on a mission to find out what happened. Dina wants to come too but can’t as her parents won’t allow it, though, she sends her blessing.
- Abby goes on a job for Isaac where she’s supposed to kill Seraphites but runs into Lev and Yara and befriends them. She starts to find her purpose again through helping the displaced kids. Yara injures her arm due to the Seraphites hunting them, so Abby decides to head to Owen’s nearby town where there are healers, but they need a discreet one as Seraphites are seen as hostiles.
- Ellie and Jesse infiltrate Owen’s town in search of answers, meanwhile Abby sneaks in Lev and Yara to Owen’s castle and he’s surprised to see her. She tells him she needs a discreet healer and he tells her of one on the outskirts of town. He’s worried about Abby but she brushes him off. She thanks him and goes there with Lev and Yara.
- Ellie and Jesse ask around about Abby and some townspeople mention how Owen knows her and they connect the dots that Owen was there when Joel was killed too. They decide to get to him to try and track down Abby. Ellie and Jesse kill some guards along the way trying to get into the castle.
- Owen and Mel have moved to a tower in the castle that is more secluded, and that’s where Ellie and Jesse find Owen and Mel in a heated discussion, Owen is immediately alerted because he recognizes Ellie. Mel panics and throws a vase at them, and the four get into a scrap, Ellie and Jesse use daggers while Owen and Mel are unarmed, Ellie stabs Mel in the neck as she tries to escape, and Jesse stabs Owen in the shoulder and side and then pins him down. They tie him up to question him and he’s distraught by Mel, who has bled out.
- Ellie learns that Mel was pregnant and starts freaking out. Jesse is also having a hard time keeping cool with this and Owen’s curses.
- Abby, Lev, and Yara get to the healer and get her arm fixed, but they are discovered by an angry gang of villagers who saw her and the Seraphites sneak in there. Abby and Lev have fight them to get away. Abby considers just running away with the two, but she looks up at Owen’s castle and gets to sinking feeling that something is horribly wrong.
- Yara and the healer hide out in a safe area while Abby and Lev head to castle.
- Ellie has collected herself a bit with the help of Jesse, and tries to get Owen to talk about where Abby is, but he is furious and completely unwilling to tell them anything. Jesse thinks that Abby will come to Owen and due to various info that Abby was there recently, and he persuades Ellie to not kill Owen, though she kicks him around a bit as revenge for Joel and still trying to get info.
- Abby comes upon the path Ellie took a few hours earlier and seeing the blood and dead guards and is alarmed, she rushes to the secluded tower she is familiar with from a higher window, and sneaks down in with Lev. She first sees Mel’s blood pool and then Jesse, then Ellie facing the other way, then Owen, tied up and bleeding.
- Abby gets the jump on Jesse and disarms him, she has her sword to his neck and Lev puts his bow on Ellie. But Ellie has scrambled over to Owen and put her dagger to his throat. They’re at a standoff and Ellie tries to barter for by saying that she was the one that caused Joel to kill Abby’s father and that the fight should just be between them. Abby says if that’s the case then they should duel each other with honor and have no one else get hurt.
- After some tense moments, Ellie says yes to the duel and they all tentatively put down their weapons. Abby says that they’ll duel alone in the field behind the walls of the town. Jesse is released and rejoins Ellie. Ellie warns if people come after her then she’ll kill Owen and the rest of Abby’s friends and they leave the tower.
- Abby rushes to Owen as soon as those two leave and her emotions flood out seeing him hurt and realizing the shock of what just happened. She cuts him out of his bonds and he begs her to not do the duel because he doesn’t trust Ellie and is afraid she’ll try something in the duel and kill Abby. She says that she has to go, and takes Lev and subtly alerts the guards to get Owen medical help before slipping out.
- Abby goes to the field where Ellie and Jesse are waiting, they tell Jesse and Lev to hang back and walk a distance away so they can’t hear or interfere with the two women. They tell them to stay out of it. Abby is in a heavier plate mail while Ellie is in lighter chain and mail. They both have longswords.
- Before they fight, Abby says something to the effect that Joel killed her father, and Ellie says she doesn’t care, Joel was her father. They then start to fight, any hit Abby gets on Ellie hits hard, but Ellie is faster and gets hits on Abby as well. At one point, Abby disarms Ellie but Ellie doesn’t stop, she starts brawling Abby instead. Abby tosses away her sword and begins hitting her unarmed too.
- Abby eventually asserts the upper hand and has Ellie pinned down in a slow choke. However, her disdain for Ellie being the cause of her father’s death and causing the death and injury of some of her friends begins to fade as she looks up and she sees Lev looking at her sad and scared. She lets go.
- Abby looks at Ellie who is gasping for breath on the ground and asks her “What good is it going to do? I hurt you for hurting me? Then someone else will come after me for the pain that will caused them. You only wanted to hurt me because I hurt someone who you loved. It will never end. Unless we end it right now. We decide enough is enough.” Abby cries and it hurts her to say that as she thinks of her father.
- Ellie silently cries as she thinks of Joel dead, but then of him alive, and then looking at Jesse, she remembers Dina and how she’d like to see her again. Ellie stares at Abby, which is hard at first, but eventually she sees less of a person she hates, and more of someone who is in pain; someone who is a lot like her.
- “Okay.” Ellie agrees, and she means it. The two slowly get up and walk back to Jesse and Lev. Ellie tells Jesse they’re going and he’s confused but follows her. When Abby reaches Lev she thanks him silently and then pulls him into a hug. The two head back to town.
- Time skip of around 6 months, Ellie has found more peace through meditation and being around her friends. Ellie, Dina, and Jesse are all really close and they decide that since Dina’s parents want her to get married that she’ll marry Jesse, but Ellie will be her secret lover and they’ll share Dina in a poly relationship. Ellie is also Dina’s sworn shield and the two often go on adventures together through the country. Later, Dina has JJ by Jesse and they settle down for a more homey lifestyle in a new village they create that is closer to Tommy’s.
- Tommy was angry for a few months at Ellie that she didn’t kill Abby or more of the people responsible, but his wife Maria becomes pregnant after years of them being unsuccessful at having kids, and once the baby is born he starts to let go of his anger and find happiness again.
- Abby and Owen reconcile, he mourns Mel and his baby and slowly heals. Abby, Lev, and Yara build a domicile near the sea they stay at most of the time. Isaac and his many troops attack the Seraphites and largely wipe them out, but he dies in battle. Some others scramble to take over his position but Owen stays out of it and has his men mind their own business. Owen also makes it known that Lev and Yara are his allies and not to be attacked.
- A few months from that, things calm down more and Abby visits Owen and her friends living in his town often. They begin a relationship again, and eventually Owen proposes marriage to her. But, he clarifies that she’d be able to adventure with Lev and Yara and travel to their seaside house when she pleased. He also doesn’t want to be in charge so much as a lord and decides to delegate more power to his council so he could come and go more often as well.
- Abby tells him she has to think about it, but after telling Lev and Yara they encourage her so she comes back and tells Owen yes. The two are finally married and they all lead a happy, more free life with their adopted kids Lev and Yara, and eventually a baby together.
Happily ever after, lol.

Two weeks before events of the hunt, November 2038:
You felt like dying for a few days straight, you only laid in your bed, staring into the ceiling, feeling hurt like fuck. You wanted to stop crying, but you couldn't bring yourself to act like the adult you should be.
Dina and Ellie, of course, took notice of your behavior and that you were missing at the dinner table for the last four days. You must've been starving when the two visited you with a plate of goulash with potatoes and deer meat which was crushed to small pieces.
"Foooood delivery!" - Dina stepped into your room dramatically with a laugh, making a diva pose. But then she stopped and her jaw dropped when she saw you laying in bed like a dead body. Your nose was full, sou it was hard to understand you.
"I hant to be ahone. Go ahay." - You cried out and turned on your second side. It still hurt so much and you were afraid that you would meet him if you would find the courage to go out. Dina slowly approached your bed and smoothed your leg. Ellie put your goulash on the table and sat on the chair close to your bed to smooth your hair. At least you took showers because you smell nice and your hair was still soft, not even a bit greasy.
"Baby. You're scaring the shit out of us. Why don't you come to have dinner with us? We miss your jokes and dickness." - Ellie tried to make you laugh, but you just exhaled out loud.
"Yeah. Nobody's keeping Jesse's ego down, so he's a fucking narcissist now. I can't listen to a fucking word he says. He went fucking wild since nobody's taming him down." - Dina took Ellie's side and both of them chuckled. - "Come on, you little shithead. Eat a bit."
And so, you sat up and began to a bit. Dina sat on your right side and Ellie was cuddling to your left side, none of them leaving you before you ate the whole plate. Dina stood up after that, taking the plate out of your palms.
"I will bring it back to the dining hall and I have a meeting with Jesse after that. I think that you'll talk about your problems though, darlings." - She smoothed your hair and kissed your forehead. That made you smile a bit, but even though you were a bit cold and pale. Ellie still snuggled your side, smiling at Dina, mouthing a silent thank you. Dina left without any other word.
"Okay. Spill the tea. What's wrong?" - Ellie laid her head on your lap so you were looking down into her eyes. She smiled as your fingers gently played with her ginger hair.
"I don't want to talk about that, Ellie." - You closed your eyes and leaned the back of your head onto the wall.
"Please, baby, you don't want to talk about something? That ain't you at all." - She smiled and her fingers brushed on yours. Ellie was always gentle with you because you were her first friend in Jackson County. She loved you like her step-sister, she knew she can be who she really is when she had you around - that one nineteen-year-lesbian with the cheesiest jokes you had ever heard. And that was why you were terrified to tell her.
Joel was basically her dead.
"It's pretty personal for me. It hurts. I'm not ready." - You whispered to her and felt as your eyes were in flames from constant crying. You couldn't even cry anymore, you barely went on a toilet to pee and your head was hurting like fuck.
"Y/N, trust me. We can talk about your situation." - Ellie sat quickly and smiled at you. She gently held your palm in hers and her green eyes made eye contact with yours. She was a gentle and dumb lesbian. You loved her. Ellie was always honest and nice to you - like your little personal angel. - "So start talking before I'll smack it out of your stupid ass."
Maybe it would help to tell her, she could help you with the situation. She could give some good reasoning, some tips, and tricks or just tell you that you're a dumb bitch. Anything would be great at the moment.
"Well-I-told-your-old-man-what-I-was-feeling-for-him-and-he-turned-me-down." - You said at the pace of the fastest animal on the planet, so Ellie rose her eyebrows as she watched you. She knew perfectly what you've said, but she wanted to hear it again.
"What have you done?" - She held your palm tighter and her palm was a bit sweaty. What the fuck should she tell you? Holy fuck, she was fucking panicking.
"I found out I had feelings for Joel and I told him... And he told me he doesn't do these things. He just blatantly turned everything down and I... Just can't." - You started to cry again even if you felt like your eyes were on fire. That could be understood, you were heartbroken for the first time - not like the first time ever, but this felt so real for the first time ever.
"Oh, baby girl. Come here, come on..." - Ellie whispered with a sad voice and she didn't have to repeat herself since you basically threw your head into her left boob. She cuddled you in and kissed the temple of your head. She nor your other friends would've guessed that you maybe felt for that old jackass. It was an unpleasant surprise - not like they would not happy if you two ended up together, but Ellie knew Joel.
He was a tough nut to crack
And she was partially stressed. What should she do to help you? She brought your head to her lips once again.
"Okay. I'll tell you something too..." - She smiled and let you sit, drying your tears off your cheeks. - "It's extremely cringy as well, so I hope that I'll make you laugh at least a bit." - She shrugged her shoulders so you knew that she'll be extremely uncomfortable during your conversation. Ellie was always shrugging when she wasn't comfortable. You tried to smile, but in combination with your teary eyes, it made an extremely cringe-worthy face.
"I fell in love with Dina." - Ellie sighed. From moment to moment, you forgot that Joel said that he simply doesn't do those things. Holy fucking shit. You were really aware of Ellie being a lesbian, and Dina was a really nice girl, but some plot twists were just random and unexpected. - "It's crazy, but it happened some time ago and since that, I'm just crazy about that girl. She says something and I need to breathe out because I would jump her bones right on the spot."
You opened up your eyes and your lips parted when you tried to understand the situation. But it was somehow impossible and your brain was not comprehending with your mind at all. Ellie and Dina.
Okay. You somehow got over Dina and Jesse over time, even if it was strange to see the two people you knew since they were little kids to grow into two human beings who were able to have a grown-up relationship. Strange and surreal.
But Dina and Ellie? No. Stop yourself. It wasn't a sure thing. But still... Ellie having feelings for Dina, that was fucking will and beyond your wildest dreams. It was enough to make you completely forget about Joel.
Dina and Ellie.
"Oh, my dear motherfucking God." - You whispered and Ellie shrugged again. But then she smiled, rose her eyebrows and smiled without any other words to say.
"See? That's the Y/N I know. Oh my dear motherfucking God indeed." - Ellie sat next to you and leaned into the wall, looking in front of herself. - "I love to see you smiling again. My lovely heterosexual wife, who's clearly into gross old men." - Ellie nudged your shoulder playfully. You opened your mouth and started to squeal by laughter.
"Sorry not sorry, but Joel is a fucking sex bomb." - You sighed and leaned your temple into her shoulder.
"So I think that you agree that we need a fucking plan." - Ellie gave you a completely serious look. - "Because I need to tell Dina and you need to show that old dipshit what he's losing. We don't know if you'll be able to make a move, but we need to show him. Kick his ass, show him."
"So the plan is to make Dina fucking break up with Jesse and that you'll have sex that night, but nobody's caring about me or my vanana? I'm fucking touched." - You sighed dramatically even though you still had teary eyes. Your broken heart still hurt, but Ellie's trouble made you at least smile and joke around.
"I'm thinking about your vanana as much as I think about your heart, dear. What about Philip? He's nice, young and he likes you." - She asked completely serious. Okay, she and Joel were a complete match like father and daughter.
"Philip? Really? You and Joel are one person in two bodies. He thought that I'm after Philip as well. I'm not into the fisherman's son at all, no matter how many girls are into him." - You stood up and decided to change clothes. You needed to get off that one small room. At least on a small walk.
"But what if you were?" - Ellie screamed and stood up, her brain almost exploding with sudden inspiration. She took your naked shoulders while you stood in front her only in your bra. - "That is the fucking question. What if you were?"
"You are a fucking psycho, Ellie." - You put her hands off your shoulders, so you could put on at least your sweater on.
"No, you fucking idiot. Listen to a word I'm saying." - Ellie sat on your table while you changed into your jeans. - "Old man thinks that you're into Philip. But you told him that you're into him. So we'll play a little mind game." - Ellie started to giggle as playfully swung her feet.
"A mind game. With Joel fucking Miller? You're a fucking savage." - You chuckled, putting your hiking boots on. You felt much, much better.
"Missy, you don't know Joel Miller the way I do. I will make him come and you'll dance with Philip. Make Joel feel what an ass he had lost by his dickish behavior." - She laughed loudly and waited for you to come after her into the cold night.

Stalker pt.2 - Joel Pimentel

part 1
Tumblr media
Something is wrong, Joel doesn’t know what it is but he pretty sure he know what he feels. Y/N who hasn’t answered his text isn’t helping at all. Just when Joel gonna call her, Zabdiel poke him, telling him they gotta do the interview. Joel sigh then get up from where he sat.
-
The man keep driving away. I don’t know where I am right now or where he is going to take me. Someone help me, please.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time ago. I come here to take you away with me.” He said with an evil gleam in his eyes, I could see it through the front mirror.
“Hear me out” He added.
“Why the fuck should I listen to you?” I commented.
“Such a dirty words from such a pretty little mouth” His smirk never leave his lips.
“That boy, Joel, had stole you from me. You and I were supposed to be together. Not the two of you” The man remarked. Joel. Oh God. I really wish he’s here now. I’m so scared, but I don’t want to show my fear to this creepy man.
“What do you mean? Wha—what are you going to do with me?”
“I just want you all to myself baby. If I can’t have you, then no one can.” He replied
Y/n breath became heavier, her thoughts were clouded with the unknown, and what did he meant by ‘If I can’t have you then no one can?’
“You have no idea who I am, do you?“The man badgered. I shake my head slowly, it made his hand grip the steering wheel stronger, I could see his hands turning white because of that.
“You just never noticed I existed.” the man really made me scared. God please help me. I swear I don’t know who is he or where he is going to take me, it could be worse than this, and there is only one way I could think of. It’s now or never.
I kicked his arm from the place where I was sitting, then I quickly closed his eyes. The man seemed to lose control of his car.
After y/n did what she think is the best way, the dark car interior floods with a bright yellow light. A car horn nearly shatters their eardrums. Tires scream against the pavement.
-
During the interview, Joel barely talk. His thought is somewhere else. He couldn’t stop thinking about you and why haven’t you answered his text.
“Bro, are you okay?” Chris notice something’s up with Joel.
“I don’t know. Y/n hasn’t answered my text.”
Chris check his watch “Don’t worry, it’s midnight there, right? maybe she fell asleep.” Chris right, maybe he’s just think too much.
-
Joel’s phone ringing startles him out of his sleep, he squints at the too-bright screen in the dark, blinking blearily at Y/N’s caller ID photo grinning at him. He runs a hand across his eyes before answering. “Hello? Y/n hey why-”
A rush of indecipherable noise - high and panicked but he knows it’s not Y/n, it’s her best friend Kira.
“Whoa Kira,” Joel days, his brow knit together in worry. “Slow down, what happened? Where’s Y/n?”
“There’s a car accident. So much blood. I didn’t see it coming. I don’t know if she’s going to be okay and-” Joel couldn’t hear the rest of it as his mind went blank.
“Where is she now?” he sounds significantly scare and panic.
-
Joel hands were shaking so much they were barely able to hold onto the jacket he grabbed out of the closet as soon as he hung the phone up. Joel didn’t only felt fear though, he felt like he’s going to puke, like he’s going to cry, like he’s going to pass out over all given how hard it was to get oxygen into his lungs. This couldn’t be happening, not to his girlfriend.
“Joel, we came as soon as we heard.” Said Richard as him and the other come through the hotel door.
“Good news, Clara got the plane tickets and the flight is in like 30 minutes, bad news is she just got 2 tickets.” Richard clarified.
“I’ll go with him.” Zabdiel added
“You both should hurry up. Don’t worry, the rest of us will catch up as soon as possible.” With that, Joel and Zabdiel quickly get out of the hotel and hopped inside the car then go to the airport.
Joel couldn’t think straight right now, he doesn’t even care that he often hit people in his way to the plane. All he cares about is getting to the hospital as soon as possible, making sure that y/n was ok.
-
3 hours later, they finally arrive at the hospital. Zabdiel go straight to the receptionist and Joel following behind.
“Hi,” The nurse say, softly and warmly “can I help you sir?”
“Hello” Zabdiel answering with a smile “a friend of ours-”
“My girlfriend.” Joel cut it.
“was admitted a few hours ago.” Zabdiel continue with his thick accent “we were wondering if we might be able to get some information”
“What’s their name?”
“Y/N Y/L/N”
“Let me see what I can do.” The nurse taps away on her keyboard. Zabdiel take a glance at Joel who couldn’t stop anxiety playing with his rings.
“Miss Y/L/N is currently in surgery,” the nurse says. “I’m afraid that’s all I’m able to tell you.”
Joel turns suddenly. “She’s in surgery?”
The nurse looks sympathetic again. “Yes, honey. I’m sure that a doctor will come to update friends and family soon.”
Her friends are her family, Joel wants to tell the nurse. He holds his tongue. The nurse is just doing her job. Joel knows the flash of frustration is misplaced, and  nod before running a hand through his hair and blowing out a breath.
“You both can wait over there” she pointed at a rather empty waiting room and all Joel saw was the back of a fiery red haired head, it’s Kira he thought.
It’s going to be a long night.
-
As the doctor speaks, Zabdiel glances at Joel out of the corner of his eye, his brown eyes are wide and exhausted and fearful. Kira doesn’t look much better.
“Wha—what do you mean?” Kira ask.
“This isn’t to say that she will never wake up,” the doctor adds, glancing at Joel. There’s solemnity in his eyes that makes Joel’s stomach squirm uncomfortably. “Just that we don’t know for sure.”
“You can see her now, if you’d like. Room 482.” the doctor adds.
Joel doesn’t wait. He wordlessly brushes past the doctor and makes a beeline for the door. Kira paused only long enough to say ‘thank you’ to the doctor before following Joel. Zabdiel lingers behind.
“What happened?” Zabdiel ask the doctor.
“Tom Johnson is now accused as a kidnapping case. He is also currently being treated, but soon he will be in jail for his actions. y/n really a clever woman. The police said she made Tom crash his car to protect herself from kidnapping.” the doctor answer. Zabdiel nod.
“And what about her chances, doctor?” Zabdiel asks, steeling himself. “Really.”
The doctor gives him a long, patient look. “She’s stable. And there is always hope.”
Zabdiel nods absently. He had been hoping for something more definitive. Something reliable. “Thank you. Really. And… I’m sorry about Joel. He’s y/n boyfriend. He’s a little upset right now. We all are. But we appreciate everything you’ve done for our friend.”
-
Joel remember the time right before he went from y/n house, she told him to stay. Heck, she even begged him to stay but he chose to leave her alone. He’d upset at himself for what he did to her and would feel a knot in his throat with a tear or two in his soft brown eyes. Maybe, just maybe, if he chooses to stay, this wouldn’t happen, they will be at y/n home now, watching some movies with popcorn while cuddling. Guilt consumed him and he never hated himself so much that he did at this point.
“Wake up, please, stay for me. Don’t leave me. I need you more than you think.” effused Joel. Right now, he’s sitting right beside y/n’s bed, holding her hand.
The room was completely silent, only the sound of the ticking clock and heart detector that y/n using, Joel really scared that someday the heart detector would show a straight line. He hoped that would be only his nightmare.
“I should’ve stayed  I should’ve listened to you. Fuck! I’m such a fool!” He tried to speak straight out, but it only came out as a croak. “You have to wake up, baby  I still owe you a promise, remember?” At this point, he really couldn’t hold back his tears. “The time when you told me about your dream, about us having vacation together with our future son, and I promise you we will living that dream soon? I owe you that promised mi amor. You want that dream to come true right? So please, wake up.” he’d be wearing a little pouf on his lips and his eyes would lose their sparkle.
-
“Kira?”
Zabdiel steps into the bathroom. Kira is gripping the edge of the sink. Kira looks at Zabdiel through the reflection in the mirror.
“I’m sorry,” she swallows. “I just… seeing her like that…”
“The doctor said she was stable.” Zabdiel replies.
“He also said that they don’t know when, or if, she will ever wake up.” Kira snapped then averts her gaze. Her voice softens, “and it is not just that. You don’t know how panic I am last night when the police called me and told me about the car accident. I was with her before this happened! We went to a party, I drove her home right before all of this happened. This is my fault! If I stayed with her, this wouldn’t happen! This—this is my—”
“Hey hey,” Zabdiel says firmly, crossing the short distance between them “Calm down.”
“But Zabdiel, I—”
“Kira” Zabdiel grab her shoulders “Just look at me. Breathe.” Kira can’t hold her tears, and Zabdiel hug her.
-
As the boys arrived, Zabdiel lead them to y/n’s room then seeing Joel stared down at his girlfriend “Yo Joel, ¿estas bien?” Chris said, Erick nudge his hand.
“What did they said?” now Richard spoke. Joel sighed, unsure if he could answer the question. Understand what’s happening, Zabdiel answer it.
“Concussion and spinal cord injury.” they looks shocked and grieving.
“Why? What happened?” Sputtered Chris.
“There’s a man who almost kidnapped y/n but when they’re in his car, y/n tried to escape by made the man crashed his car. The police said it’s self defense that y/n can do.” Joel frustrating shaking his head then running his hand through his hair, he’s about to cry for the 4th time.
“Hey, don’t worry. Y/n is a strong girl. She’s going to make it. Let us take care of that Tom man”.
-
“Time of death, 03.22 AM February 14th.”
No one dare to speak, as if they knew this would be happening.
“Then what about the trial?”
“Let God do the punishment for him.” It’s been three days y/n has been in the hospital. Tom Johnson, the guilty man, has died because of severe brain injury.
“What about y/n? Is there any progress?” Joel asked the doctor, with hope y/n will gonna be okay.
“Her condition is better than yesterday.” The doctor answered. Joel massage his temple “When—when will she wake up?”
“We don’t know for sure, but we all know she’s a fighter. And there’s always hope, Mr. Pimentel. Sooner or later, she’ll wake up.” Joel go back to y/n’s room alone, the rest of the guys and Kira are still talking to the doctor and the police.
Joel stepped into the room, then sit in the chair next to y/n’s bed, the same place he sat since he’s got there. He’s sad and empty at the same time. It felt like a years for him, but it’s only been days.
“I love you, Y/n, more than you’ll ever known.” expressed Joel as he stared at y/n’s unresponsive body then take her hands. It’s ridiculous, he thought, talking to y/n as if she can hear it.
“I know you can’t feel it but I promise I’m holding your hand right now.” he chuckles. “Tom Johnson, the man who caused all of this, has died. And you know what I’m scared the most? It’s what if the police say your name instead of him? God, I can’t imagine if that—” Joel didn’t realize he was crying again until now.
“I — I can’t give up on you, so please amor, please don’t give up on yourself. But in case you—” his eyes are blurry now because of his own tears. “I wasn’t ready to say goodbye.” He said almost like a whisper. He’s crying, looking down while continuing holding y/n’s cold hand.
Joel look up at y/n’s pale face, almost looks… dead. No. Fuck, no. She’s not. She’s alive. She’s still breathing and she’s going to be okay, Joel assure himself, tightens his hand against her.
Joel open his mouth but snaps shut when he sees y/n’s other hand twitch against the thin blanket. He’s on his feet in the next second, he looks both hopeful and afraid that hope is misplaced.
“Y/n? Can you hear me?” Joel swear he sees her fingers twitch again and he hurriedly grab it. He watches the faint, steady rise and fall of her chest with each breath. Y/n’s breath catches before he takes in a much deeper breath. Joel can feel his heart in his throat.
And then y/n’s eyelashes flutter open. Joel releases a sound that like something between a sob and a laugh.
“Joel?”
“Ssshh,” Joel soothes “Easy love, I’m here, and I’m never letting you go again.”
