Okay so I just had to do some research into Tiresias, a generally minor character from Greek mythology. These days he's mostly known for being a blind prophet and for also turning into a woman for seven years as a punishment, but it turns out that there is so much more to their story than that. Because it generally gets confusing about what gender they are, I will be referring to Tiresias (T) as they/them for the sake of clarity.

So first of, the two main stories that are in modern day mythology books are these:

That T was born a man, came across two snakes having sex one day and hit them with a stick, which angered Hera so she turned T into a woman.

That T was born a man, and accidentally saw Athena bathing, so she blinded T and turned T into a woman, but felt bad so gave T the powers of prophecy.

But T may have a much more interesting and longer story than this, including not one, not two, but eight sex changes throughout their life. Now we don't know too much about the actual content of the story, as the only surviving records of the six to eight sex changes that T goes through are either from fragmentary works from Hesiod or pseudo-Hesiod, and a summary of the lost elegiac poem Tiresias by Ptolemaeus Chennus or Sostratos of Phanagoria.

There are references to the story of Tiresias in the Bibliotheca, however this one simply tells the Athena story, which isn't referenced by earlier writers.

However, reconstructing the story of Tiresias as told by Hesiod and Ptolemaeus Ch. we get something which looks like this.

T was originally born female, and early on in life Apollo took a fancy to T, and so went to have sex with them. T agreed on the condition that Apollo teach T how to play music first, which he did, but then T refused to sleep with Apollo, which made him made so he turned T into a man 'so T would feel the arrow of Eros'.

Having been turned into a man, T was asked to mediate an argument between Zeus and Hera, about who had more fun during sex, men or women. T said, having been both, said that women have more fun. As punishment, Hera turned T into a woman.

After been turned into a woman, T laughed at a statue of Hera and Hera turned T into a ugly old man as punishment.

Zeus took pity on T, and turned T into a woman at the 'bloom of her youth'

When T was bathing one day, a man called Glyphius tried to rape T, but T is too strong and strangles him. Since Glyphius was a favourite of Poseidon, he takes T to court who turn T into a man as punishment. They also took away T's skill at prophecy.

T attended the wedding of Peleus and Thetis (The parents of Achilles. This is the wedding which kicked off the trojan war) and judged an apparently unrelated beauty contest to the one with Eris and the golden apple, this one between Aphrodite and the Graces, Pasithea, Euphrosyne, and Cale. T chose Cale as the most beautiful, and as punishment Aphrodite changed T into an ugly old woman, though Cale took pity on T and gave them a really good head of hair.

[...] at this the goddess became angry and changed T into a mouse, and this is why mice eat very little, as they had once been an old lady, and also why mice are prophetic.

Now this gives us with some questions, but one main one. How did T become a prophet? Well, this ties into the version of the story with Athena, recounted by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. As a man, T sees Athena naked and makes T blind as a punishment. T's mother, the nymph Chariclo, begs Athena to change T back, but Athena refuses. Chariclo then washes T's ears, which gives T the power of prophecy, because T can now understand the cries of the Augury bird.

Another question is why, if T had judged that women have more fun during sex, would she turn T into a woman as punishment. Now you could argue a certain more assaulty reason, but the punishment makes much more sense if we put the story about the snakes before T mediates the argument.

The story goes that T, as a man, comes across a pair of snakes having sex and hits them with a stick, causing them to break apart. Hera objects to this, and so turns T into a woman as a punishment and T becomes a priestess of Hera. Then T mediates the argument, and T turns into a man. This isolated version of the story is one that survived to most modern mythologies.

Now there are several more things, but we really don't know too much about anything to do with Tiresias really, as the best work we know of which details his whole life is fragmentary at best and completely lost at worse. There are a ton of miscellaneous notes and facts about him. Apprently Zeus gave T a lifespan seven times longer than that of a human. He might've been blinded for knowing the secrets of the gods. He frequently communicated with the dead in order to tell his prophecies, and when Odysseus went to the land of the dead T was the only person that recognised him. Not even Odysseus' mother could recognise him without drinking a special drink. The word Tiresias was also a by-name for a prophet in ancient Greece. He was a reoccurring character in Greek Tragedies, most notably in the Bacchae, where he joins in the bacchic revels. He also assists Oedipus in the murder investigation of Laius, the previous king, and dies after drinking tainted water and getting shot by Apollo.

Tiresias is characterised as an extremely old prophet who communicates with birds and the dead, and has knowledge of the lives of Men, Women, and the gods.

That's fucking badass, and it pains me to know that'll we'll never know more than that.

soo i saw one of your posts about transmisogyny which i thought was really well written and articulated, so i wanted to get your opinion on something.

i’ve seen some tme trans(masc) people on here say that treating trans men like “gender traitors” or “siding with The Enemy” is bioessentialist and terf rhetoric, however i see this brought up almost exclusively in response to conversations about tme and/or male privilege. to me it seems like they feel invalidated or vilified by trans women and discussions about transmisogyny, and so they reposition the issue as one which targets and oppresses them so that they can avoid having to confront any privilege they may possess. i also think the way they phrase it purposely obfuscates what they’re really getting at, which is that men are oppressed for being masculine and held up as the ultimate evil (patently untrue). but i don’t really know as much about it as you might and it’s also not my place to decide what is or isn’t transmisogyny as a tme, so i wanted to hear your thoughts.

anyway yeah, those are some pretty astute observations. to be honest, I have to agree that the "gender traitor" narrative is bioessentialist, which is why it very much is terf rhetoric. in order for trans men to be "gender traitors" or "siding with the enemy", you would have to suppose that they are fundamentally women, and that they chose to be trans in order to escape from misogyny and gain access to male privilege. the basis of this hypothetical relies on the premise that they are female due to some permanent unchangeable characteristic, which is exactly what bioessentialism posits. plus, this narrative relies on the willful depiction of transness as nothing more than a lifestyle choice, which is blatantly transphobic due to the fact that for many trans people, transness manifests independently of any external factors.

(you will find a lot of debate about what makes people trans, and there is a lot of disagreement even among trans people, but I'm not going to get into that right now. just assume that my point is that there is no universal narrative that explains why people are trans and it varies from person to person.)

that being said, I feel it's also important to point out that there's no shortage of transmascs who are terfs or were former terfs. the reason for this is pretty obvious when you think about it for a few seconds: terfs regularly talk about how womanhood is an innately traumatic and miserable experience, and closeted transmascs for whom womanhood IS a traumatic and miserable experience sometimes gravitate toward that community because it makes them feel understood. terfs very much operate like a cult in this way, and you could easily assert that transmascs who become terfs are victims of cult brainwashing. however, my sympathy for them ends the moment I remember that they willingly joined a hate group whose purpose is the extermination of people like me.

and make no mistake! many of these men are still just as transmisogynistic as they were before! even the ones who leave the terf community (which is not all of them) only do so because they often find that they're no longer welcome when they choose to transition, not out of any desire to atone for the violence they've perpetrated against trans women.

so, what are these trans men to do after they've been exiled from the community that validated their existence and gave them a political drive? how can they reconcile the fact that their decision to choose masculinity and manhood has resulted in them feeling ostracized, ridiculed, and isolated? it's simple really: redefine their politics around the premise that men are actually hated in society. this is an easy conclusion for them to come to when they've been living inside an echo chamber where everyone they know DOES hate men.

the problem with that, though, is that in the eyes of a radical feminist, a "man" is a biological category of person, and any critiques you can make about men's behavior can be attributed to a biological cause. terfs don't ACTUALLY hate men, they hate "biological males" - trans women.

and that's very true of these transmasculine "former" terfs as well. they still hold the same bioessentialist views, so they feel vilified whenever they come into contact with the "biological males" they've come to despise so much. most of them don't actually understand any other types of feminism besides radical feminism, so when they encounter trans women reminding them that they have male privilege, they fall back on their bioessentialist beliefs. they're not an evil "biological male", after all, they're a "biological female" who's "ontologically incapable of violence", and a feminist is criticizing them for "siding with the enemy" by "choosing masculinity".

you need to understand that when they do this, it is largely a form of deflection. they resent the radical feminists who discarded them for being trans, and are attempting to distance themselves from the people who hurt them. that's why they're so vehemently anti-feminist. and because they haven't unpacked any of their bioessentialist beliefs, they're able to paint trans women, who deep down they still view as privileged and dangerous biological males, as aggressive and oppressive radical feminists. ultimately, despite whatever conception they have of themselves, they're expressing a form of male entitlement by shutting the conversation down and making everything that terfs do about them, ignoring the fact that the vast, VAST majority of the violence they enact is targeted specifically at trans women. and why wouldn't they? they don't actually care about trans women. they still hate us just as much as they always have, even if they now pay us lip service and (sometimes) use the right pronouns for us.

let me make myself clear: not all transmascs do this. not even a majority! all in all, this kind of story represents a pretty small minority of trans men, but they're very vocal and very visible in the trans community. that's not to say that most transmascs don't hold transmisogynistic views (it's basically impossible to have absolutely none if you're tme), but few of them are this hateful. this story is just one that I've seen played out many times - mostly involuntarily - because I've gotten a lot of these types of guys arguing with me on here and painting me as a radfem for talking about basic feminist tenets such as "men are an oppressor class".

also, as a disclaimer since I don't have time to get into everything: terfs are not a monolith and some terfs welcome trans men into their ranks (though these are an even smaller number of them), this was just one scenario that I hope painted a clear picture of the cause behind this phenomenon you've observed.

okay rant time but BEFORE I GO ANY FURTHER I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY I AM TRANSGENDER AND THIS POST IS COMING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A TRANS MAN. I AM NOT FORCING ANYONE TO AGREE WITH ME OR CHANGE THEIR HEADCANONS THESE ARE MY THOUGHTS BASED ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCES.

I really *really* think saying chihiro fujisaki is a trans woman is legitimately disrespectful and if anything harmful to actual trans women.

trans rep, ESPECIALLY transfem rep is outrageously hard to find done right or just to find at all. it's almost always stereotyped or gross or harmful and fetishy and I legitimately hate it, so I completely understand the headcanon people have for him but I think if you hc him as trans, trans*masc* would not only fit better but be far less disrespectful, let me explain.

the whole point/narrative of chapter 2 is toxic masculinity, and chihiro is unfortunately a victim of toxic masculinity. chihiro was harassed and bullied into dressing like a girl because he was born with a more feminine appearance, which as a trans man myself I completely understand the struggle of. saying someone is a trans woman because they were *forced* to dress and act like a girl so they wouldn't be bullied, hurt, ect is gross to me. it's implying trans women are forced to act that way, not for comfort in their own bodies but to fit the expectations of others. I'd totally get it if he had a more masculine appearance and was dressing like a woman and getting bullied for willingly choosing to express himself as a girl, but he isn't. he doesn't like it, he says so himself.

"where is it implied he doesn't like it and it makes him uncomfortable?" well unfortunately trigger happy havoc being trigger happy havoc very VERY briefly covers this topic and it blows ass but fortunately, we have danganronpa summer camp! I recently bought the game because I wanted to see all my sillies alive and well interacting with eachother, and each character has their own mini kind of story mode, so let's talk about chihiros.

chihiro has quite alot of very interesting cutscenes that give HEAVY transmasc implications, but the most notable one is at the end of his story mode he actually comes out to everyone that he is a boy and is ecstatic about it because he finally feels comfortable enough to be who he truly is. another scene that screams transmasc is a cutscene with mondo and tenko where tenko is bashing mondo but praising chihiro and calling him a girl endlessly and praising him for being a girl. this literally causes him to run off with mondo and start crying because of her calling him a girl so much, and he expresses genuine fear that tenko might hurt him if he came out as a boy.

would someone who is so comfortable with their identity literally start crying out of fear when they're being addressed in a way that's supposed to make them happy? why would they have to fear being hurt? I know exactly how he feels and it legitimately angers me a little bit because it took me years of living in fear to come out. everytime I got called a girl I felt like breaking down and crying because I never felt like I'd be strong enough or masculine enough to be perceived as a boy, exactly how he expresses his feelings.

hes constantly thanking mondo for helping him build up strength, and that because of him hes starting to feel alot better. there's two other scenes that really really push the transmasc hc for me. one being a scene where he bumps into fuyuhiko, who is going to the same secret training spot as him, and they both bond over not being able to be perceived as masculine and strong because of their small, not traditionally masculine appearances. the final one that really seals it for me is where mondo and chihiro are sitting in the hotsprings together just chatting alone, until masaru shows up. masaru sees chihiro, and starts yelling that "mondo brought a girl into the hotsprings!!!" which causes him to break down and cry. It makes him uncomfortable and insecure, not happy.

so again, to me, you can have any hc for any character you want and im not gonna cop you for calling chihiro a girl, so please do the same for me. do whatever you want. but to me, I see it as disrespectful and rude to trans women as I've seen posts of trans women also saying that they don't think it's appropriate to hc him that way and share similar thoughts that it's disrespectful to them.

do I believe chihiro is trans?? yes!! absolutely!! trans rep forever we NEED more of it in media!! but in this case I don't really see it as transfem rep, but transmasc rep.

As an ex-transmed, what’s your stance on transgender people not having surgeries? As in top and bottom surgeries.

IMO one of the most toxic parts of the transmed community is that it leaves people feeling the need to "prove" how sincere their feelings (dysphoria) are. They're happy to openly question whether any given trans person is "really" trans because they haven't expressed severe dysphoria/haven't undergone certain medical procedures/don't pass well enough, while also believing that there IS a way to sincerely be/become [insert opposite of "AGAB" here].

It almost turns into a competition. "I'm such a real man, I wear my binder 18 hours a day because the dysphoria of taking it off is so unbearable." "TERFs have nothing on me because no cis man would ever willingly cut his penis off." "I'm 2 years on T and still happy with all the changes, the deep voice, the body hair, etc. No cis girl would feel that way." Etc etc. It's not constructive.

As a former trans person I would never doubt the sincerity of someone's trans feelings because I know from personal experience how ridiculously strong they can be. I know what it's like to take a knife to my female bodyparts. I know what it's like to tie a noose because I felt life was not worth living if I could never be a "real man". And I know the "gender euphoria" of binding, of packing, of passing, of feeling so strongly and so sincerely that this was how I was supposed to be.

And as a person who holds gender critical beliefs I would never doubt the sincerity of someone's trans feelings because I don't think it matters. I don't think there is any point at which gender dysphoria or medical procedures or social changes become strong enough that an adult human female becomes a man or vice versa. That's not a dismissal of how sincere their feelings are or how real their experiences are (again speaking as someone who spent several years passing as male), it's a neutral statement on my personal beliefs on gender (and lack thereof).

On both sides, there is absolutely no reason for me to treat trans people who have had or intend to have bottom surgery different from those who haven't or don't. My personal perspective on dealing with dysphoria through body neutrality would generally lead me to say that the less surgical intervention the better, but that doesn't mean I'm going to have a better view of people who deal with dysphoria the same way I do.

Thanks so much for your ask @faerieroyal !!! As usual with my beloved Kit, you'll be getting answers for both 80s!Kit and movie!Kit, so buckle up!

1. Can your OC admit to mistakes or weaknesses? Can they accept help?

Oh boy, both of them are so bad at admitting to not being the best™.

80s!Kit might be a little better at admitting to mistakes of character. She'll at least admit to being "a little stubborn" or "slightly impulsive". However, she hates having to say that someone beat her in a fight or - even worse - she may have possibly been kidnapped and can't get out on her own, and she hates having to be rescued because she failed to protect herself. Hannibal gets to save her after he learned not to rub it in her face. B.A. gets to save her because she loves to see the look on her captors' faces when he stares them down. Murdock gets to save her because he has never rubbed it in her face and never will - he's trying to get her to understand that getting saved is okay. Face does not get to save her. It's supposed to be her saving him. He's her damsel in distress, not the other way around.

Movie!Kit, on the other hand, will admit to being physically weaker. He's strong, alright, but he's an acrobat, not a strongman. Too much muscle mass would get in the way of his flexibility and it would be too heavy. However, he is always right. That's a law and that's a fact. There's only one person that can make him admit that he was wrong, and that's Face, with his power to make Kit's brain and heart melt with his kisses. Hannibal, however, knows how to harness this power for himself.

6. Are they dramatic?

80s!Kit isn't very dramatic. She prefers staring people down or walking away - or punching them. If she gets injured, she's gonna play it off or ignore it, usually with less than optimal results.

Movie!Kit is SO dramatic, especially if in the presence of Murdock and/or Face. These three together are the kinds over people kidnappers would give back willingly if they had only two of them, let alone three. They'll call Hannibal to pick up his kids because they're sick of these clowns and their constant whining and chattering and joking around. Also, Kit sometimes dramatises his injuries if he wants to be carried. His precious acrobat's limbs need to be protected. Ever heard of fatigue fractures? Or maybe he pulled a muscle, who knows...

7. How would they prefer to die?

Both of them want to die young and quickly. As much as they love their found family and their life, they can't imagine growing old or settling down. However, "young" is a very vague term here, because they probably wouldn't mind getting close to Hannibal's age if they're still as healthy as him then. And they'll definitely take a slow and painful death if it means their loved ones will be saved.

8. What is guaranteed to make them angry?

Everything? No, it’s not that bad, but both variants of Kit are very hot-headed. Criminal offense #1 is hurting Face, #2 is hurting the rest of the team. But now for some variant-specific reasons:

80s!Kit gets especially mad if kids are in danger. She will beat anyone up who even dares threaten a kid.

Movie!Kit, being trans, definitely wages war on transphobia. Talking shit? You get hit. This extends to homophobia as well. If his opponent is lucky, Kit will leave it at summoning Face just to make out with him in front of the homophobe's face. Generally, anyone who shows any bias against people who are not cishet, male and white will be flattened, but he shows the least mercy when it comes to transphobia.

9. What do they get really petty about?

80s!Kit gets petty about her gender. "Are you a woman?" "No!" "Are you a man?" "No! I don’t identify as a man or woman. I might occasionally feel like it though. I'm both and neither. What's there not to understand?" "So you identify as genderless? How does that even work?" "No. Weren't you listening? If you don't stop being stupid, I'm gonna start identifying as a problem, fool!"

Movie!Kit is an acrobat, not a gymnast. Yes, he does gymnastics, fine, but he's an acrobat, because he's an artist, specifically a circus artist. Do not call him anything but an acrobat.

I'm sending this to three T70s blogs! What are your very most controversial/unpopular That 70s Show opinions? To get the ball rolling, I'll confess a few of mine since I'm on anon and can't be attacked :) 1. I always shipped Jackie/Eric to the point where they're a true OTP of mine. I have no idea why. Usually when I ship non-canon couples, it's because they're very close friends whose personalities seem incredibly compatible to me...but Jackie and Eric aren't especially close (despite being in the same general group), and they don't seem very compatible or even to care about and respect each other that much. (Though Jackie's "hero" line melts me!) Tbh, it probably just comes down to the fact that Jackie and Eric are by far my two favorite characters. I love analyzing, writing about them, and envisioning how they might have worked if I conveniently ignore 97% of canon. I'm pathetic :) 2. I wouldn't really like Hyde in real life and don't think he was a particularly good romantic partner at all. (*ducks*) I mean, he was an improvement over Kelso, but who isn't?! I just think fandom idealizes him a bit too much. It's a matter of taste, though---the super 'edgy, rebel, proudly rude, 'duuude, I shoplift and smoke a lot of weed and would rather set myself on fire than eat in a mainstream chain restaurant' kind of guys just aren't my personal type :) 3. Sort of related to the first two confessions: I don't think Jackie and Hyde would make each other happy long term. They had some wonderful moments on the show, but I really just don't think they'd give each other what they want. 4. I don't really get how some newer fans turn Laurie into this root-worthy 'girlboss' who's just misunderstood- she's supposed to be unrepentantly, hilariously terrible, and she is! Sometimes it really is as simple as that :) 5. (*whispers*) More often than not, I enjoy Kelso. Obviously as a boyfriend to Jackie, but as a character who - for me - really does add a lot of humor and energy to the show. i can't wait to read yours, and please don't hate me for mine!

To your points.

1. Jackie and Hyde can work long term, to me. They're stubborn, but they give eachother what they want. Love and stability.

2. I do think Laurie was mistreated by her mother and was unrightfully slut shamed. However, she goes beyond this, and willingly home wrecks. Ultimately, she falls back into her old patterns whenever things get hard. She has potential to be better, but she is morally grey, if you will. She is willing to do almost anything to get what she wants.

Okay, now mine.

1. I've said this before, but I think T9S is worse than season 8. If only because season 8 is way easier to fix.

2. I tend to regard season 8 as canon, if only because it logistically meshes (unfortunately). Both post-season 8 and post-season 7 verses are canon. T9S is not, since it logistically clashes with both, in a huge way (*cough* sixteen year old Jay *cough*).

3. I do not think Jackie can truly overcome all of her conservative biases via Hyde. She would really struggle to accept a child that seriously strays from the norm. It sucks. It's one of those things where she outwardly accepts it, to be politically correct, but it's obvious that it's not how she really feels. She'd ultimately accept a gay or bi kid, but it would take her years to accept a trans/gender non-conforming kid. And even then, she still wouldn't get it/understand it.

4. Okay, T7S takes place in the past. Blatant historical anachronisms, to adhere to modern standards, do way more harm than good. It leads some readers to believe things were better than they actually were, which is a fucking disservice. I strive to be historically accurate, not just in material things, but in attitudes too. It varies from character to character, but still.

5. Jackie, for the most part, would be awful irl. I've met good Jackies in the past, but a lot of bad ones, too (*cough* family members *cough*).

6. Only Jackie, and maybe Fez, would be a Swiftie.

What a terrible time to be a kid, right? I'm convinced that if I were attending public high school in 2022 some asshole would be trying to tell me I'm supposed to be a boy because I'm loud, rough, and dress in a hoodie and jeans 99.9% of the time. In fact, I spent a lot of my childhood genuinely wishing/pretending to be a boy because I had some perception that they were better. It wasn't until I was in my early or mid twenties that I realized I'm not just happy being a woman, I love being a woman. So, when I think about these kids who've been convinced that they can or should be taking puberty blockers or getting transitional surgeries, I feel truly dismayed, sick, angry. Sometimes it just takes a little bit to be comfortable in your own skin. You have to grow through it and accept who you are. I can't understand this new cultural push to disregard the value of loving yourself the way you were born in favor of experimental medical science which will most likely make you miserable. I would be miserable right now if I'd spent my youth trying to transition to male. I'm glad I didn't even have the option to explore. And these parents who willingly start their young children down the road to transition as a publicity stunt deserve to be shot. They're willingly sending their kids into a life doomed for confusion at best and suicide at worst. Why is society not taking this trend more seriously? Even if there's a very small number of people forcing children to change their gender, why are we not ALL horrified by even those infrequent cases? Why are we harming children to validate adults?

You're right and you should say it. We desperately need to stop tribalizing every single issue and digging our heels in when the "other side" pushes back. Because that's basically what's happening with trans kids. You have a bunch of creepy adults, most of whom are trenders or trans activists, grooming kids into being trans. No one on the left or in the middle is speaking up because they're scared of being canceled for being "transphobic", so the only people speaking against it are on the right, or are perceived to be on the right. The moment that happens, this stops being about helping kids and starts being about those evil right wingers who want to kill all trans people. The people who are abusing these kids are simultaneously saying that they're not abusing them and that, if they don't abuse them, the kids will be miserable and probably commit suicide. There needs to be a major pushback on all this far left insanity. It's encouraging that parents are starting to pay attention to what's going on in schools, but that's just the beginning. There's a reason why all early forms of internet access had a kid's only version that didn't let kids access the wider internet. Kids these days get smartphones and internet ready tablets as toddlers and eventually end up exposed to shit they're not ready to experience. Critics of this like to say things like "parents are letting these devices raise children" but it's not the devices raising their kids, it's a bunch of faceless strangers on the internet. Many of whom have bad intentions towards children. Parents need to parent again, and society needs to start treating child predators of all kinds as target practice regardless of which side of the political divide they're on.

i personally as a trans person do not see chihiro as trans... is the media transphobic? yes most likely. did the characters arc feel strange and perpetuate harmful stuff? absolutely. but that doesn't make the character trans if they themselves never express wanting to be a different gender. chihiro wants to be a boy. that is their character arc. ranka i say is definitely more complex than that, since i feel they are very clearly shown as a drag performer, but many trans women in japanese media are also shown heavily as drag queens, but its when they keep the gender expression outside of work, i typically do view it as confirmation that this character is most likely, and in most cases, trans, because they choose to present that way because that is their comfort or makes them happy. chihiro meanwhile is not happy as a girl, and i think presents almost a narrative foil to the trans experience. chihiro feels forced to uphold everyone elses idea about their gender, and so they presented as a girl because they felt that was more safe rather than it was something that would make them happy. they don't present as a boy because people misgendered them when they presented cis, which is the opposite of many but not all trans people. they don't dress like that to trick anyone, or get anyone hurt, and again, while the story line is clearly iffy in a lot of ways, that doesn't necessarily means chihiro is trans in canon. that's not to dismiss anyone elses thoughts, really, i love trans headcanons for them, i think it's fun to explore whatever and personally really enjoy agender or gender apathetic chihiro after they learn to deal with their own internalised stuff about what gender means to them and not anyone else. i do think there's a clear difference between how their character acts and why versus say ranka or any other character in media by the way of how their reasonings for what they do are presented. ex: ranka willingly dresses and acts that way, against others judgements rather than chihiro dressing that way because of peoples judgements. (i cannot speak on helena from friends since i haven't watched that show)(and i really hope this doesn't come across as mean because I really admire many of yours thoughts on stuff, but thought I'd at least add some of my perspective? dunno, no pressure to think the same or anything, I've just thought about this sort of topic alot when it comes to trans and genderqueer characters in Japanese media)(which is very different from say western media but thats something I think has a lot of nuance since it has such different cultural understanding than what we might be used to, and i think that should be acknowledged) //gen+nm

I never will, a transphobic writer will write ANYTHING to deny that a caricature character is trans and/or supposed to represent trans people/experiences, I don't Care what the characters arc is when they are a clear, obvious trans caricature (especially when that arc is a COMMON TRANSPHOBIC NARRATIVE USED AGAINST REAL LIFE TRANS PEOPLE TO DEVALUE THEIR EXPERIENCES AS FAKE), and the passive defending of that writing by deferring to canon when the caricature is discussed is exactly what I'm angry about

Like I never claimed any of the characters were canon, even for the ones that are (i.e. birdetta), my point was that I don't care if they are or not, they're trans caricatures and it's not okay for real people to say caricatures are okay and reinforce and play into them because the writers made up in-universe justification for it
