Proud Author of a New Work

I hid this story for months and finally had the courage to post it. ⊙⁠﹏⁠⊙  [I’m so glad you did!  And everyone who reads and loves it is going to thank you, too.  Good for you:  I hope it’s rewarding for you!]

It revolves Wei Wuxian leaving right after classes, and from there I'll fit canon in a new way, mostly WWX-friendly. WWX is powerful (crooked path fam) and confident and we hint around about Sect Leader WWX! And Wangxian is, of course, endgame.

Everyone should always mind the tags but it should be cool with everyone, there's nothing really explicit.

listen there really was just something about how in the book, snow’s 3-page descent from hesitant lover boy to deluded psychopath happens entirely in his mind. lucy gray gives him no indication whatsoever that she suspects him, that she’s going to leave or betray him. he’s just sitting quietly in the cabin waiting for her to return when that seed of calculated suspicion, which he has needed to survive the capitol, takes a hold of him and chokes the life out of any goodness left inside him. it really drives home your terror as a reader that “oh my god did he kill her? did she escape? what happened to her? why would he even think that?” in a way that when the movie had to adjust for visualization it lost some of that holy shit this guy has lost it emphasis.

#seeing some discourse and im not saying lucy grey didnt know #im saying she never dropped the kind of hints that she knew like she did in the movie #or if she did snow isnt worried about them until he very suddenly is consumed by them #snow is not concerned about whether or not she believed him. of course she did! hes snow! #but then shes gone…. for a while…… #and its the sudden immediate drastic unravelling that comes across so clearly in the book #that i knew wouldn’t translate to screen yet still cant help but miss #the hunger games #coriolanus snow #tbosas #lucy gray baird #not a crime or anything just a note that i cannot stop thinking about #the ballad of songbirds and snakes #this is all from memory of reading it quite a while ago. so maybe 3 pages is an exaggeration #but i remember it happening VERY quickly and without much external cause #like we as the reader have no indication as to whether shes nearby or not. #snow has no idea either. he just SUSPECTS. and his suspicion breeds the hatred that has been bubbling inside him all this time #he hates how she undoes him. he hates that he WOULD run away with her if shed let him keep his secrets #and he HATES more than anything that she makes him WANT to tell his secrets #he wants to be vulnerable and reveal the ugly nasty parts about himself and still be loved #but he does not let himself and it is everyone’s downfall #he chooses cruelty bc it is easy and familiar and makes him feel more powerful than the vulnerable give and take that real love requires

my favourite thing about chuuya nakahara is that he's just kind of. chill. about everything. he's like, my tragic backstory has no hold on me, i went to therapy and i'm all good now. i'm a bad guy cuz it pays good and my found family happens to be here. what do you mean that's not a good reason, you a cop or something?

someone will betray him and he'll go ok well that's pretty upsetting. they probably had a good reason though. i'll forgive them if they let me get a good punch in. if they're really just a hater they're giving me bad vibes and i don't wanna deal with 'em at all tbh.

things have been done to him that would warrant a lifelong crusade of revenge for anyone else, but for chuuya nakahara it's just, that was super not cool but i'll let it slide if you get therapy with me.

chuuya is down for any crime and thinks moral boundaries are for losers and stuff but he's the nicest guy in the port mafia when it comes to not mistreating his subordinates and probably helps old ladies cross the street. he shows up for a solid 10-20 minutes of screentime per season and makes all the fans fall in love with him while doing the bare minimum, and despite technically being a villain i don't think he's worked against the agency a single time (although to be fair this is often not on purpose). he also does the bare minimum every time he's asked to help in-universe and clearly isn't even trying, and he sweeps anyway because he is ridiculously overpowered and could probably kill literally everyone if he actually wanted to, and i just. no one is doing it like him. you go you unbothered king.

reading and watching “classic” books and films is such an interesting experience because, before you get into them, when you only know them by name and maybe the vaguest plot outline, they’re intimidating and stuffy and up on a pedestal, but then you finally take the leap and check them out and realize that almost every story that’s achieved such a legendary level of popularity did so because something in its emotional core reached out and grabbed a lot of people by the throat and you are NOT immune.

#not that anyone but me probably needs to hear this but… #it’s OKAY to have Big Feelings about popular things #they’re popular for a reason - it makes sense to have a big reaction #but yeah - i should really know by now but i’m STILL floored every time i read or watch a classic and it Gets Me #like. this story has been Getting people for decades or centuries or MILLENNIA and yet STILL i’m surprised #‘i didn’t think the story would Get me’ says man about story that’s Gotten everyone who’s ever heard it

hello! i think this qualifies as a “proud author of a new work” — the work isn’t exactly new, but it was newly completed! about ten months ago, i started writing a silly little fic called perennial that was not, in fact, supposed to be over 50k. now, ten months later, it is completed at 173k. (I’m laughing so hard.  It be like that sometimes!)  i’d be really thankful for a little boost, since i know your blog is one of the places people come For The Good Stuff hehe so thank you!

if anyone’s interested in: character studies, in-depth takes on how Human Relationships Are Complicated And So Are People, in-depth takes on War And Death and Grief, yunmeng bros reconciliation (eventually), disgustingly sweet married wangxian (eventually), the junior squad being the BEST, Food As A Metaphor For Love, loving wei wuxian and on a very deep and very real level, and dare i say it, pretty high quality writing (lol) come on over, kids, and let me spin you a yarn.

It passed me by. It flowed back to the ocean as streams do. The water remembers. The water of Yiling, the water of Gusu. (Sometimes he sits by the dinner table in the jingshi, squeezing a mandarin in his hands to soften it, feeling the first traces of winter color the sky. He thinks about how mandarins only bear fruit once a year, or sometimes once every second year; how they take time but always inevitably bloom again, perennial in their growth. Peeling the skin, placing a bud in his mouth: some things are endlessly recurring. The same is true for him now, twice alive.)

... In which Wei Wuxian builds a life, tears it apart, and learns that what he thought was salted earth is actually just scorched.
