I wanted to make these gifs to highlight some of the details that Lu Feng often incorporates when he acts. You can see the subtle eye twitches in the first three gifs. I feel that it adds a lot to the scene and even the character, who is typically very composed. It’s almost like you can see that he’s getting irritated without a lot of facial expression. Then it gradually begins to evolve in the final two gifs since it’s not only his eyes that twitch but the way he delivers the lines since the emotions truly begin to leak through. All of the Venom Mob are great actors, but this is one reason why I always say Lu Feng is one of the best (if not the best).

How did the weapons in Spearman of Death originate?

This is a wonderful question! Initially, Lu Feng, Chiang Sheng, Kuo Chui, and Chang Cheh witnessed flags being used in a Peking opera performance. Each of them was struck by its beauty when the flag was spinning around. The only problem was that flags are unable to attack people or be used in the manner they were in Flag of Iron. This led to them adding a spearhead onto the tip of the flag, which is how they created the weapons! It was all of their idea to use them.

Whenever I see people talk about that first kiss between Ed and Stede, I generally get an undercurrent of having to defend it in some way, and it makes me sad. Because I genuinely do think the kiss is perfect for who those characters are, and it's not a case of finding justification for all the choices in that scene after the fact, but rather believing the scene was genuinely designed to be the way it is.

How many times has Stede been kissed romantically? I'm going to guess at most Mary tried a few times without much success. And Ed? I can easily believe that all his experience with kissing is as a statement of intent to fuck very soon. So there's Ed, unused to kissing as an expression of love, putting all his awkward, shy feelings of tenderness into a kiss that has to show Stede exactly what he's feeling. It's a chaste kiss, a First Kiss for both of them. It's adolescent (look at Ed's freshly shaved face, how they're both stripped of their usual "armour") and ungainly and neither of them knows what to do with his hands, but their love for each other guides their movements (Stede presses forward slightly, Ed cups Stede face so gently and instinctively).

So I won't ever defend that kiss, because it doesn't need me to. It's perfect.

In fact, all my fantasy books take place in the same world-setting, and I’m thrilled to be announcing this one, which features an entirely new cast of characters, such as…

1) Avra Helvaçi, a mangy little gremlin I found in a dumpster behind a Denny’s, where he was being mugged by possums for the collection of used pizza boxes he was eating. He has zero personal dignity. He makes weird mouth noises. If you let him into your house, he will climb into your vents and you will not be able to get rid of him.

2) Teveri az-Ḥaffār, a very cool pirate captain, which means they own a collection of fabulously coats and are constantly Going Through It. Despite never having been married in the first place, Teveri and Avra have been newly divorced for the last fifteen years.

3) Brother Julian, his juicy biceps, his even juicier brain, and his entirely juiceless oath of celibacy, all of which are personally victimising Tev and Avra on a daily basis.

Running Close to the Wind features all the themes pirate books are legally required to have, such as found families and extremely pointed social commentary about how capitalism is the root of all evil and all cops are bastards. It is also a comedy, because as long as you can laugh, there’s still a part of you that’s free—and pirates are all about freedom.
