11. Something you want to do again next this year?

Complete a long story that I'm super proud of. ELYN took so much longer than I expected to edit but I feel like it was worth the time and I learned so much about myself and my writing from doing it.

Currently I'm hoping to put that energy into a novel, but also hopefully I'll write some more fic this year (maybe I should do some kind of short fic prompt game... do people still do things like that? Would you guys want to read that?)

14. Favorite book you read this last year?

OCEAN'S ECHO Ocean's Echo Ocean's Echooooo. I feel like this may not come as a surprise as I have mentioned it... multiple times... but RARELY do I read a book that is SO MUCH my jam as this one. The characters are so incredibly well built, the voices are perfect it is a story about FAKING A SOULBOND TO SIDESTEP A MILTARY CONSCRIPTION and it is in SPACE and I want to live in this universe FOREVER.

Also Our Wives Under the Sea which I knew nothing about going in and it was this gorgeous creeping horror and also amazing character work and the ocean is deep and amazing and DEEP.

And since I read 99 books last year (it was a slow reading year), let's throw in honourable mentions to Lockwood & Co, I'm Glad my Mom Died, Light from Uncommon Stars, The City We Became, and Lessons in Chemistry

I will put this in a separate post from the one I just reblogged because it's a side tangent but to use OP's example, of, "you cannot really presume Usagi is evil on the basis of her destiny as a Future Monarch", this illuminates to me why it's so important to take media analysis as something where you divide up all the pieces of the work and your response.

In-universe. Serenity is not evil. Serenity is the future. she is benevolent. she is correct. she is beautiful. Crystal Tokyo is beautiful. She saved the future from total apocalypse.

Metatextually, at least to my personal read, Serenity embodies maturity. Sailor Moon is a story about adolescence. Usagi is basically given the power to embody her own older self- the cool, beautiful, sought after grown-up that she has the potential to become, but isn't yet. This is reflected in how much of her problems are related to childhood- childish things like being 'a crybaby'. And how much of her powers reflect positions of adulthood- things like the disguise pen that enables her to position herself as various adults who are already entrenched and have jobs, are respectable and respected. And, as encapsulated in a meme at least once, sometimes the effort of mantling as those people is overwhelming to Usagi!

Serenity embodies true maturity. The World in tarot. Serenity's graciousness, authority, power, she is not just an adult with a job she is the adult with the job. In many models or interpretations of monarchy, the monarch is seen as almost the parent of the entire nation. Serenity is Chibi-usa's rightful mother, who Chibi-usa respects, though she is annoyed by Usagi in the modern day who does not live up to this ideal.

NOW. Having this laid out and established, we can THEN turn around and ask: is it a good thing to see people this way? Does Usagi really Grow Up Perfect into Serenity? Does Serenity, really, never backslide or feel like Usagi? How does this parable of adulthood mingle with the actual realities of monarchy?

But at that point what we're messing with is basically, the discussion of the performance. WHY did the author use these symbols to communicate this context, and how do we feel about it. My read on this is going to be very different, because I personally believe monarchy is unethical and I also have some personal baggage about perfection, that leaves me uncomfortable with Serenity as an individual in her own right and a future impression of who Usagi WILL be.

This leaves me much more fond of Steven Universe ultimately using Rose Quartz and her history as an allusion to Serenity, and how, actually, it wasn't a good thing that Rose Quartz retreated behind such a perfect facade. That actually, it's not Steven's job to transcend into a perfect adult who has no problems. BEING that adult... is not a very good thing. It creates problems. We love Serenity. Serenity, probably, loves us, or at least tries to. But being Serenity is not good for her. Being Serenity creates a certain amount of insincerity and struggle in her personal life. In We Need To Talk, Greg demands that Rose actually talks to him "like a real person", to which Rose, visibly disquieted, says she's not a real person and she thought he knew that. She was serving him the fantasy of idealized Serenity and not the reality of an actual, flawed, struggling person- an "Usagi" who thought she had to put away all her childish things and grow up so she wouldn't be bad anymore.

But Steven Universe isn't directly a story about Rose Quartz. It's a story about Steven, the child of this Usagi/Serenity character, and subtextually, it is not a contemporary or peer to Sailor Moon- it is a successor. Rebecca Sugar experienced Sailor Moon, and felt feelings, and drew from those feelings. And this is significant, because Rose Quartz is not Usagi. She is, sort of, an echo of Usagi digested by Sugar and processed into a new entity entirely. Sailor Moon is not required reading for Steven Universe. We know who Rose is because the story tells us. It would be meaningless to take the context of Rose Quartz and put it directly back into Serenity.

And I could even be completely wrong about this connection. Ultimately the only versions of these figures I can talk about are the versions of these figures who I have, myself, 'digested', and warped a bit by the lenses I view them through. But I'd never be able to get there at all, if I didn't have some kind of conversation with myself about my feelings, and my relationship with both of these media, and what qualities they have, regardless of my feelings.

brutally honest ship opinion meme - I'm catching up on 6-month-old ask meme prompts it's fine.

Hang on, I need to dig into the 2011 reaction gif folder.

They were gonna get muh-huh-huh-hah-uh-rried-d-d-d-dhhh.

PeterGwen are...the most thematically load-bearing non-familial relationship in this comic. Which makes it very funny (depressing) how many writers and fans are like "ah this is the Basic romance". PeterGwen is...inevitable, by choice. They're two asshole STEM majors (PeterGwen is asshole4asshole whereas PeterMJ is bitch4bitch, these are distinct) who ALWAYS conduct themselves at each other with the MAXIMUM amount of drama. They are a vintage romance comic nested inside a vintage superhero comic. The clash of their personalities is such that they don't know how to go to the store together without composing a sonnet about it. A hypothetically uninterrupted PeterGwen trajectory wouldn't dock in suburbia - it would be pastel and primary Morticia and Gomez. Gerry Conway was correct in concluding that the only way to really stick a fork in this relationship was to kill one of them off, because if you took the alternate route I've proposed in the past of keeping them from tying the knot by having Gwen become the supervillainous member of the friend group they would have eventually crashed back together weirder, more dramatic, and more powerful. I'm enamored with their bullheaded, fatal refusal to leave each other alone, which is why I like taking a poly approach to Gwen revival concepts. (Also they're both fun and they're fun together.)

So THAT'S the dynamic that was, or should have been, enshrined when Gwen's death became a keystone event in the Marvel universe. They're in the foundations of PeterMJ, Harry's stints as the Goblin, all the clone shit, etc. They're echoing eternally through this franchise in way more substantial ways than the dozens of multimedia homage scenes of characters getting thrown off tall shit. If you like Spider-Man and you think you don't like PeterGwen yes you do.

And holy shit the DRAMA of a relationship where a timer starts ticking down when two people first meet. The ANGST. This is one of the reasons I don't love Spider-Gwen shifting to going by Ghost Spider because "death always follows Gwen Stacy" like, no!! That's such a stale toast way to interpret Peter's Gwen being dead and Gwen's Peter being dead. The much jucier read through which to allow the characters to see the shape of the narrative trends that guide their lives is: The laws of the universe have decreed that once the two of you enter a room together only one of you gets to leave it alive. (I was very occupied with this concept writing Three Graves but did not convey it very well, I intend to work it into Neapolitan, I know what I like.)

Anyways you can ignore this if it makes no sense or you simply don’t want to bother but I have an idea that I’d like you to consider that might be of some interest; I spent my 3am reading through the Shining Nikki Saga tag and it got me thinking about a creator from other similar games/medias. One that has been plaguing my thoughts in particular is a creator- especially Impostor!au- who’s from Honkai Impact 3rd.

A creator who’s a Herrscher, or maybe a Houkai beast or Pseudo-Herrscher the way that Benares is, or even just a standard Valkyrie.

But Just. A creator who isn’t helpless after their unfortunate isekai. They pull up in Teyvat, get attacked by the forces of whichever nation they land in, and their first reaction is “oh haha okay- TAKE THIS SUBSPACE LANCE DUMBASS‼️”

in terms of other various medias, my mind goes to, as always, minecraft. isekai!creator with creative mode. ender pearls for quick getaways, invisibility potions, potions for speed and fire resistance (which will come in handy should they start to pull out witch trial pyres), flying if they’re in creative mode, fireworks and elytras..… honestly, depending how much of the base media you want to pull over into genshin, pretty much any other media would work. i’m also thinking of demon slayer (for the sole reason it has been discussed on this blog prior) and specifically giyu’s “dead calm” breathing, but any of the others will do. depends on the media and a bunch of semantics about lore, but i’m not going to get into that.

redirecting back to mhy games strictly because of star rail (was that out when i first got this ask? god knows but it’s here now), specifically ratio’s burst. imagine being a hunter, seeing a Suspicious Person about, and in response they simply. construct a building of stone and steel out of nowhere, sending it crashing down in front of your platoon. nobody’s hurt, thankfully, but the earthquake echoes.

Hanekoma paced back and forth, trying to mentally refortify himself as his memories echoed back in his head over and over. There was a golden tiger ripping through his soul and the smell of garbage all over him and all at once everything was coming down around his head, but he was starting to understand the imprint left in the tattoo on his arm. Any other given day maybe this would have caused him to crack open like a glass jar and just spill the contents of his mind out into every single angel that could possibly hear him. Only by his counterpart's grace was he spared such an occurance.

"Oh fuck," he groaned and stopped, raising his hands to his face. Abe's voice in the back of his head. The pleasure. The pain. "Fuck, get it together, Sanae... Goddammit..."

He had known she had a sixth sense from the moment he met her, and a powerful one at that. But he had no idea she could actually scan him. Now she knew... Everything! Everything! From the moment he was born to the moment he died. To the moment he became an angel and betrayed Joshua and crossed universes and and...!

That was too much knowledge. That was too much knowledge for any one living human to have. God. They were going to come down on him. Right??? They were going to take him away, right!?

"I had no idea you could-- do you know how dangerous that knowledge is for you?" He whined, turning back to her. "I don't want them to hurt you..."

Surely she'd seen the host of higher ups in all that. Surely she had seen him on trial, wings down, head bowed as he waited to see if they would condition him into something new. It was too much for her. It was dangerous for her.

saw in your latest ask that you just read the locked tomb series and i’d love to hear some of your general thoughts on it! for me it’s pretty cogent thematically and exhibits occasional brilliance (harrow the ninth in particular comes to mind; it’s very technically deft imo) but there are issues wrt execution that i can’t overlook, no matter how much i love the series.

yes i am a locked tomb enjoyer >:) i started gtn on a whim at 3am when i couldn't sleep in surgery recovery lmao and then got pretty sucked in around the halfway mark. readmore so i don't have to worry about spoilers.

honestly my main gripe prior to nona was that i was concerned muir was just going to elide a lot of the imperial violence that her worldbuilding implied. having now read ntn i'm much more enthusiastic about the whole series. i've gathered from seeing some Posts that nona did not get a universally positive reception jfdjshfjd but i really liked it. obviously there's a lot that muir needs to pick back up in alecto, and i agree that harrow had some extremely banger technical moments, but also, nona had the john passages, so....

anyway. it's hard for me to be concise here because there's a lot going on in these books and their intertexts. i think to me the centrally clever thing muir has done is use necromancy, the necromancer/cavalier relationship, and lyctorhood (really just the higher expression of this same relationship) as interpersonal representations and echoes of imperial violence. to me this is what makes nona so good, and even allows nona to re-contextualise harrow and gideon in retrospect. if lyctors are "half-dead cannibals," then so, in some sense, is the empire itself and any imperial subject. death is then not a stopping point of violence but a necessary production of empire; also, there is a really fascinating essay to pull together here about the use of cannibalism as a metaphor in discussing political violence (i'm thinking especially of the french long nineteenth century; invocations of 'bloodthirst' eg during the first revolution; and the social role of butchers and butchery, in relation to tlt's necro-bio-politics and use of the body as a locus and articulation of violence.... yum).

problems-wise i would say the comedy doesn't always land for me. i think muir is trying to do something with memes and internet jokes akin to how cervantes used high/low language and humour in 'don quixote' (obviously a major intertext for both dulcinea and ortus, and arguably also harrow's bubble universe in the river), but sometimes i just don't like it lol. also, i saw a post circulating recently that said ianthe was pre-written for fanfic tropes, and like... true lol i find her mostly uninteresting except for the incestuous and abusive implications (maybe just explicit text at this point) with corona. also i'm interested to see whether muir is intending to do more with race in alecto.

in general, though... yeah i'm really excited for alecto; i think muir has potentially set herself up well. that shift from essentially the limited perspective of a marginal but still imperial subject, to the hints we get of the broader empire on the mithraeum, to actually opening up blood of eden and the process of conquering people (not just harrow flipping planets) was well done. also to do that in nona through alecto's eyes, which are of course physically the eyes of a teenage girl...! and i didn't even get to her own body being modelled on a barbie that she hates. like i said, there's a lot to say about these books lmao. i love you pyrrha dve and i'm dying (haha) to know what muir is planning to do with kiriona.

4. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas?

All over the place. Reading something else, cycling home, listening to a podcast… mainly I blame the cosmic inspiration rays, streaming through the universe, combined with my lack of protective gear to stop the pesky buggers.

39. Share a snippet from a WIP

Law grunted as he sliced through an enormous alligator, rearranging its parts with those of a nearby tree. Their path so far had been quite uneventful, but they were probably nearing the shade and good hiding spots of a ruined temple, if the increasing amount of beasts and just plain weird creatures were something to judge by.

“I’d say we’re nearing the main area,” Nico Robin said, echoing his thoughts, as she used her extra limbs to brush away greenery and peer through the undergrowth.

“What makes you say that,” Bepo asked, panting and surreptitiously clawing at the opening of his boiler suit. Law furrowed his brows – the mink sounded like he was suffering from the heat. He really should have left Bepo on the cool ship with Ikkaku and Franky, but Bepo had insisted… but what kind of captain was he if he didn’t put his crew’s needs before their wants? A quick Scan ensured him that Bepo was fine, even if he was running a bit of a temperature.

“If not for the increasing amount of things that try to kill us, which implies the presence of good hiding spots, such as could be created by a ruined temple," she said, pointing at a cracked stone tablet, “I’d say the sign that says ‘this way to main plaza and temple entrance’ in one of the ancient tongues of the island is a good indicator.”

54. What’s your favorite part about the fanfiction writing process?

Writing. Also, my least favourite part is writing. It’s good you get to write, but then you have to write, y’know? But I really enjoy getting lost in the story and finding the right way to express something, preferably with at least two layers of meaning to it.

56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?

My multi-layered jokes and easter eggs and call-backs and puns and wordplay. It’s fun to just go off on a pun-tangent and drop weird-ass almost-acronyms and still somehow make it make sense (for me at least). I’m still inordinately proud of my “plastered enough to start their own construction company” as a way to describe really, really drunk people in StatSig, for example.
