Hypothyroidism in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment
Tumblr media
When a dog’s thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones, a condition called hypothyroidism occurs. Middle-aged and older dogs are most commonly affected. Thyroid hormones help regulate many internal functions, such as metabolism and heart rate. When these hormones are low, vital functions are impaired and symptoms develop. Fortunately, with early detection and treatment, most hypothyroid dogs have a normal life expectancy.
Causes of hypothyroidism in dogs
Lymphocytic thyroiditis, an immune-mediated condition, is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in dogs. It occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys the thyroid gland, resulting in significant inflammation and low hormone production. It is unknown why the immune system decides to attack the thyroid gland, but it is thought to be hereditary.
Hypothyroidism in dogs can also occur due to thyroid gland atrophy. During this process, the functional tissue of the thyroid gland is replaced by fat. Veterinarians also don’t know why this process occurs.
A pituitary gland tumor is another cause, but it is extremely rare. The pituitary gland is located at the base of a dog’s brain and is responsible for secreting thyroid stimulating hormone. In dogs with a pituitary tumor, this process is impaired, and the thyroid gland is not stimulated. Therefore, thyroid hormones are not produced.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of hypothyroidism in dogs
Hypothyroidism causes numerous symptoms in dogs, which may include the following:
Weight gain despite a normal appetite
Fat accumulation around shoulders, neck, and hind end
Lethargy
Dull hair coat
Slow hair regrowth
Flaky and/or thickened skin
Patches of alopecia (hair loss)
Slow heart rate
Cold intolerance
Recurrent skin and ear infections
Fertility issues
Reduced tear production (dry eye)
Nerve abnormalities
Dogs with hypothyroidism may have high cholesterol, high fat content and mild anemia on bloodwork.
How to treat hypothyroidism in dogs
Dogs with hypothyroidism require oral supplementation of a synthetic thyroid hormone called levothyroxine. This medication is given daily and is relatively inexpensive. The dose, which is determined by the dog’s weight, may change over time based on his response to treatment. Periodic bloodwork helps the veterinarian assess hormone levels and adjust the dose when necessary. Supplementation is required for the remainder of the pet’s life.
Since hypothyroid dogs are already prone to high cholesterol, switching to a low-fat kibble is beneficial. Omega-3 fatty acids also promote a healthier skin and coat. Your veterinarian can recommend the best type of food to meet your dog’s specific needs.
Life expectancy
Hypothyroidism is not a curable condition. However, most healthy, hypothyroid dogs live long, happy lives with the proper monitoring and treatment. Dogs with additional health issues, such as heart disease or kidney disease, may have shorter lifespans due to the difficulty in managing hypothyroidism alongside concurrent illness.
If left untreated, hypothyroidism results in a poor quality of life, an increased risk of complications and a reduced lifespan. Early diagnosis ensures your pet receives the treatment he needs to be happy and healthy. If you notice any signs of hypothyroidism in your dog, bring him to the veterinarian for evaluation.

Hek and I have done more in the last week than we have in the last year. We had way too much fun! Hek was showered with well-deserved compliments everywhere we went.
This is her watching me eat under the table at a very busy restaurant. Some may see it as a Bean begging to be shared with, but it's really her doing her job. I encourage her to watch me, especially when I'm eating, because a lot of her alerts/interruptions are visual. This meal was a fast food restaurant that I particularly struggled with. Hek ended up just laying her head on the bench so she could watch my hands continuously, and I could easily switch from harming myself to petting her.
Drug and health update below
Now that my parents are gone, I'm changing all the drug stuff. It's time to once again drop on my prednisone dose. The Fludrocortisone probably needs to be increased, but I can't do anything about that rn. I'm also changing the times I'm taking everything in hopes it will ease the tapering experience.
Current schedule:
12:00 - 5mg Pred
4:00 - 100mcg Levothyroxine
7:00 - 10mg Pred + 0.1mg Fludro
17:00 - 2.5mg Pred
22:00 - 2.5mg Pred
New schedule:
11:00 - 5mg Pred
5:00 - 100mcg Levo + 7.5mg Pred + 0.1mg Fludro
17:00 - 2.5mg Pred
Straight up, I'm not excited to transition from the immuno suppressive level to the adrenal support level. Pain and energy levels are meh at best. My joints are already becoming problematic again, especially my fingers and toes. I'm struggling with sleeping in every way, which baffles my endo, but idk what to tell her. Mostly, it's the salt cravings that have skyrocketed in the last two months that are driving me crazy. The weight problem is just something I'm learning to live with at this point. It's all water retention and gaining the weight I couldn't keep on before the cortisol.

Some people have a service animal. I have a disservice animal. She’s a menace. A wretch, she probably has more mental disorders than me. she’s loud and demanding and she sheds all over the place. She gets in my face and sniffs my eyeballs when I feel bad and she’s a serial leash puller despite me trying to train her. Ooh lord

Testing out my theory that Mandana is developing a natural hypoglycemia alert & response.
I don’t have diabetes but low blood sugar is something I’ve always struggled with and I’m sure my thyroid problems right now aren’t helping.
Mandana was acting funky while we were playing. She usually only does that when there’s something wrong with me. I asked if it was an alert so she went and got the medical alert badge we use for HR alerts but then refused to bring it to me. Then I asked her to bring my blood pressure cuff which is what she does to alert to blood pressure problems. She ran off again but instead of bringing the cuff she brought me a nutritional shake. I took it from her and asked her to bring the cuff again but she just kept bringing me nutritional shakes.
She does this sometimes and I’ve been suspecting that she might have caught on to the pattern and developed a natural blood sugar alert/response. I didn’t want to believe it because it’s too good to be true. Heart Rate (Hi/Low) Blood Pressure (Hi/Low) AND low blood sugar?! All from one dog and with different alerts, high accuracy rate and minimal training…I mean, come on 🙄
But she DID develop a natural blood pressure alert. She realized that I only ask her to “bring cuff” when my blood pressure is really bad. She started bringing me the cuff without being asked but when I started checking my blood pressure afterwards she was always right. So it’s possible that she picked up on the pattern that I only ask her to bring me my “drink” when my blood sugar is low as well. The problem is that I’m so jaded to chronic illness that I’m usually pretty unaware of my symptoms and not thinking clearly when my blood sugar is low, so I never think to check it when she brings me a drink. I just take the drink and thank her.
But ignoring a well-known command and bringing me a plethora of nutritional shakes was a good reminder to check and sure enough it was a bit low. I’m not claiming that she is a super accurate, double-blind tested medical alert dog, but hey…if it helps mitigate my disability 🤗🥰😎

I just got a Cardigan corgi last week! All my dogs have been secondhand/from the used dog lot. This handsome fella had to be rehomed when their baby turned out to be super allergic. He's 7 & hypothyroid- a bit extra-chunky. We were thinking of renaming him a Welsh name (though I think he was from a German breeder) but we settled on Hank. Here he is with Dolly the runty rescue Newfoundland ('only' 90lbs) & our friend's 1year old Pembroke (from Wales! Fresh from the source!), Violet. She's a sweetheart.

Introduction time 🫶
Tumblr media
I realized I’ve not done and introduction and I kinda apologize for that. Anyway, moving on.
Hi, my name is Sulia Lilliath, and you can refer to me as Lilliath. I’ve been shifting since August 2020. I think the reason I believed in shifting so fast is because I’ve always thought that other realities existed. Like, I would sit and watch Grimm with my dad and would think “What if this show is a like a real place that people actually live in; I wonder what it would be like to go there?” I have 21-22 Drs (I counted) but I haven't tried to shift to any of them, except for a few.
Tumblr media
Here’s a little rundown about me
I was born June 6, 2007
I’m a Gemini 😚
I have a little sister
I have a lot of pets - 2 dogs, 2 fish, 3 guineas, 2 rabbits, and 17 chickens
Sadly, I’m from texas 😔
I’ve lived in a small town my whole life
I really like to travel, I’ve gone to Vegas, Estes Park, Colorado (3x), I’ve gone camping in Oklahoma many times
I’m weirdly obsessed with sleep token
I have an autoimmune disease (hypothyroidism)
I have one true friend who is adore so much
Tumblr media
Some shifting related things
I haven’t shifted yet 😭
I’ve been shifting for 3 1/2 years
A dr that I tried shifting to the longest is Supernatural
I introduced one of my friends to shifting and she shifted first try 🥲
None of my friends wanted to group shift so I scripted them into my drs. We gonna be together one way or another 🫶
My very first dr was a MHA LOV dr and the first guy I shifted for was Dabi..
I’m respawning to my better cr
My favorite dr is my iZombie dr. It’s my go to when I’m bored of other drs
Peace dawgs

So I found out that Teddy, that tiktok honking cat, passed away suddenly a few months ago last night and now I just can't get it out of my head.
I watched the goodbye video and watching his human tearfully say goodbye to him and how he meant more than anything to her just crushed me. Particularly as Milo is about to turn 9 this Sunday and that's getting into old age for a Labrador, especially one with hypothyroidism and lifelong medical issues like he has.
It didn't hit me the way Esper (the "little Russian lady" vibe Borzoi) did, because I followed Esper and her human for years after that, but both were my inspiration for my favorite dog and cat breeds (even if I don't love the name for that cat breed)
You will be missed, Teddy, your honks will continue to echo in our hearts.

(medical stuff cw behind the cut)
I really dislike being in this state where I have weird headaches and no idea if they're from chronic sinusitis, hormones/perimenopause, my thyroid meds being off, allergies, tension, migraine, or something else entirely 😑
What makes it worse is that I now have the world's most useless primary care doctor, so there's no point in even going to see him, and every specialist is only gonna treat the thing they're a specialist for. The three weeks of antibiotics the ENT gave me did improve things! But they're degrading again now and he said the next thing he'd do would be surgery, which I don't wanna do when I'm not even sure that's the problem.
My endocrinologist previously had me tweak my synthroid dose down, which appeared to help, but then all my hypothyroid symptoms started coming back, so I bumped it back up, and that was fine for a while but now not so much. But would I rather have headaches or constant joint pain? When I asked him about whether it might be hormonal at my last appointment he blew me off and was like "if you want to go back and forth between these two doses to manage your symptoms that's fine" which is not very useful.
There's also the dimension that it might be related to not getting enough exercise, and my schedule is a disaster right now so I'm not getting any exercise beyond walking the dog at the moment. Or maybe it's related to food! I get a worse headache when I'm hungry.
In any case idk I guess I need to find a new primary care doctor who actually is useful, if such a thing even exists anymore

RULES.
going to try and keep this pretty simple & straightforward.
I.  You must be 18+ to interact with me. I am 42 years old.
There will be not safe for work content on this blog of the sexual and potentially of the graphic violence nature.  I do tag everything that might be triggering and am happy to tag whatever you ask me to so long as I remember!
I ask that you tag any visuals containing spiders with spider tw* spiders tw* arachnophobia tw* etc etc and yes, I know it’s a weird one but anything about the taste of soap or eating soap is a trigger so just tag it with soap tw* or penny don’t look* as I have that blacklisted too.  I don’t have any triggering fcs or what not.
II. This blog is multi-ship, multi-verse, crossover & au friendly.
Every ship is in its’ own verse unless previously discussed with all parties.  Every thread or set of threads takes place in its own universe unless previously discussed with all parties.
III.  I write anything from one-liners to novellas, it really just depends on life, my headspace, how much sleep I’ve been getting, how much else I have going on in real life, etc.
IV. My activity is NOT consistent.  I am infamous for blog hopping.  I have literally replied to some starters / replies two years+ after they were originally written.  I am not fast.  If I am fast, it’s by some small miracle and perfect storm of brain, muse and free time.  It will not last.
V.  I have kids, cats and dogs; I am in college, I have a household to take care of and I have many physical and mental handicaps that can affect my ability to function and write, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, ganglion cysts, torn meniscus, migraines, hypothyroidism, PMDD, nerve damage, herniated disc, ADHD, depression, anxiety, C-PTSD and severe insomnia.
Roleplay is something I do for fun.
If it isn’t fun, I don’t do it.
If it’s stressing me out, I’ll avoid it.
VI. I do graphic commissions.
I run @tuppencetrinkets where I post the millions of screencaps and 200x100 icons that I make.  The resources are free but donations are always appreciated as I pay about $40 in hosting / program fees a month.   My commissions are always pay what you can.  I hate setting prices because I want everyone to have pretties if they want them and I don’t know what anyone can afford at any given time.  I do everything from base icons to edited icons, backgrounds, headers, dividers, promos, videos, you name it.  I try to be quick with turnaround but again – sometimes I just can’t be.
VII.  I am fine with plotting things out in advance or winging it.  I really don’t care, whatever you are more comfortable with is fine with me.
I like all kinds of plots.  I like fluffy things, slice of life, broships, frenemies, enemies, familial, found family, long arcing, one shot throwaway, dark and twisted, you name it plots.  I will not write n*ncon or anything nsfw themed /even hinted at with minor characters and I won’t write any explicit child death etc. but most everything else is fair game.
VIII.  You can throw a million memes at me any time you want to.
IX.  You can throw any and all starters at me any time you want to.
I’m not necessarily mutual exclusive but I don’t guarantee I’ll respond to memes or starters from non-mutual blogs.
X. I use icons, headers, promos etc. that I make myself 99% of the time.  Please do not use any of my edited graphics.  All base icons I use are free and available on my resource blog.
XI. I use small text and my icons are 200x100 with empty space to make them 540x130 so that they don’t stretch out on mobile.  I prefer not heavily edited replies in terms of font variance and colors but really don’t care that much.
XII.  I’ve probably forgotten relevant things but, who knows.
XIII.  No drama.  Period.  I’m not interested.
XIV.  I’m here for fun.  I’m really pretty easy going.  If you have any questions feel free to toss them into my inbox!
